"The influence of the copper electro crystallization inhibitors (mainly thiourea, gelatin and chloride ions) is studied in a new fully automatic pilot plan. This paper describes the conception and the building of this plan. The new approach is to reproduce the experimental conditions observed in the industry with the three additives present simultaneously in the electrolyte and secondly to study the influence of a slight modification of the concentration of one inhibitor, the others being present in the electrolyte with their industrial nominalconcentrations.1. INTRODUCTIONDespite the fact that gelatine, thiourea and chloride ions have been used in copper electrorefining for a long time, precise knowledge concerning their influence on the cathode deposit, metallographic structure and associated properties is still lacking.Many authors studied the influence of each additive separately, or of two added at a time. Only a few authors studied the combined influence of the three additives added simultaneously. The general conclusion that can be drawn is that the combined influence is far from that forseen from the influence of each additive separately, or even from two additives used at a time. Moreover most of the experiments described in the literature were performed by adding all additives at once initially. It is however, well known that gelatine looses a great part of its activity during the first half hour due to degradation by sulfuric acid (as shown by the cathode overpotential drop). Thiourea is rapidly replaced by a number of degradation mole,cules and complex ions including cations from the solution, changing even the equilibrium between Cu, Cu(I) and Cu(II).Chloride ions are consumed by precipitation.A number of successive research projects [1-9] led pregressively to the concept that, in order to obtain reproducible results representative of industrial cathodes, it was necessary to simulate as far as possible industrial conditions. It was essential that all additives were added continuously during the electrolysis, with, as consequence, a continuous bleed.The purpose of this paper is to describe the concept of a new fully automatic pilot plan for copper electrorefining and to present the first results."

Humphreys Engineering Co. has been associated with mining and milling since the turn of the century, but its greatest contribution to the industry was development of the Humphreys spiral concentrator in 1943. Few devices in the history of mineral beneficiation have been so uncomplicated. The spiral concentrator has no moving parts and requires no power except that needed to deliver slurry to the feed box, a requirement common to all concentrating devices. Although Humphreys Engineering Co. produces several models of spiral concentrators, the one -commonly used for coal cleaning is Model 24C-6 which has a flatter pitch than most other models. The spiral concentrator consists of a spiral conduit with a modified semicircular cross section. A slurry containing 20-35% solids by weight is fed to the feed box at the top of the spiral and flows downward. The heavier refuse particles concentrate along the inner side of the slurry stream and the lighter coal moves to the outside. The coal spiral has six complete turns-each turn consists of three 120°-sections and each section has a refuse port at the lowest point of the channel. The Humphreys spiral concentrator separates minerals in accordance with their physical properties (primarily specific gravity and particle shape). Aside from pumping slurry to the distributor, no energy is required to produce clean coal since the separating action is controlled by gravity. As slurry flows down the spiral channel, each particle is subjected to a centrifugal force, tangential to the channel. This force piles slurry on the outer rim of the spiral until the flowing stream reaches an equilibrium between outward centrifugal force and downward gravitational force. Once established, the stream position is relatively constant. In any flowing stream, differential velocities are present within that stream (the slowest fluid levels nearest the channel surface and the fastest layers at the center). As the channel curves, the lower slurry levels, retarded by friction, have much less centrifugal force and tend to move sideways toward the inner radius of the channel. As the bottom layers move inward along the bottom of the channel, the upper layers must move outward to maintain equilibrium. This cross sectional rotation separates the minerals and moves those of highest specific gravity toward the inner radius where they drop through refuse ports (see figure on following page). The simplicity of the spiral concentrator is apparent in operation. After tonnage, slurry volume, and percent solids of the feed have been determined-generally with laboratory testing-the operator's main concern is simple adjustment of the splitters located in the refuse ports. These splitters control the amount of refuse collected and, generally, once properly set they need little attention unless grade conditions drastically change or trash builds up and hinders laminar flow. Spiral concentrators are not overly sensitive to changes in pulp densities, variances in grade, or parti¬cle size and shapes. All these conditions may fluctuate over fairly wide ranges without adversely affecting recovery and product grade. In certain applications, desliming may improve recovery.

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

Productivity is the most important determinant in the economics of underground coal mining operations. Lower labor productivity increases labor requirements per ton. This, in turn, increases the unit cost of production. Intensive labor requirements may also affect miner injuries and fatalities by increasing man-hours of exposure necessary to produce a given amount of coal.

Fire is always a serious-menace, whether in a residential or in an industrial region; in wartime it is particularly damaging in an industrial plant. The mining industry is especially vulnerable, as its plants are generally more or less isolated front centers of population and do not have access to modern fire-fighting equipment; moreover, owing to the transitory rapture of most mines, their surface structures; are often relatively flimsy and flammable.. Trained firemen seldom are available at or near mining plants to teach the fundamentals of fire-fighting to local fire brigades, with the result that efficiency in combating actual fires is lacking. Often the attitude "it can't happen here" is held by the management of a mining property, unless the plant has suffered a serious fire; even then lapse of time is very likely to induce forgetfulness as to the possible hazards. The necessity for producing metals for the prosecution of this war has increased management's responsibility. Whereas heretofore the loss of a plant or mill by fire meant merely monetary less to the stockholder of the company, now the national interest is affected, in that the nation suffers from loss of production of minerals indispensable for war purposes.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high-sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations. The survey, which provided information on Appalachian region coals only, indicated that such important coal- beds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14-mesh top size. For many other coalbeds amenability to sulfur liberation by crushing was indicated, although too few samples were available to draw firm conclusions,

THE Hard Rock gold mine is in the Little Long Lac mining area, Thunder Bay district, northwestern Ontario. It is four miles by road from the town of Geraldton, which is on the Canadian National railway, 180 miles northeast of Port Arthur. The original discovery of gold-bearing quartz veins on the property was made in 1931. Shaft sinking began in the fall of 1934 and approximately 7,400 feet of lateral development on four levels was completed. In 1935, further discoveries were made half a mile west of the early workings, and the No. 2 shaft was sunk in this area in a porphyry zone. In January, 1938, a 20C-ton cyanide plant was completed and began drilling ore from the gold-bearing porphyry orebody. The daily feed was increased gradually to 300 tons in the next six months and a recovery of 97.5 per cent was effected. During the summer of the same year, a new and larger orebody was discovered to the north of the porphyry zone. It occurs in a band of iron formation and contains a high percentage of pyrite and arsenopyrite. Extensive tests were rr.ace on this sulphide ore in the Mines Branch ore dressing laboratory at Ottawa, in the laboratory of Canadian Industries, limited, at Toronto, and later at the mine, to find a suitable method of treatrr.ent. As a result of this research, a Potation plant was added to the original cyanide mill and on November 7th, 1938, differential flotation was used to separate the pyrite from the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore. The pyrite concentrate was re-ground and cyanide:l, and the arsenopyrire concentrate was stored for subsequent treatment. Differential flotation was discontinued in April, 1939, in favour of bulk formation of all the sulphides, and the whole cyanide residue was stored. On March 15th, 1939, a 10-ton pilot roaster was completed and rests were conducted on the arsenopyrite concentrate and the bulk concentrate. The results obtained led to the building of two roasters of the same type, large enough to roast all the concentrates. These roasters were put in operation on September 24th, 1939, and the calcines were cyanided in the original circuit.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. IN recent years, most of the reconnaissance work of the Geological Survey of Canada has been mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles. Topographic base maps, commonly made from aerial photographs, were available to the geologist for such work. The advent of war curtailed aerial photography for civilian purposes, and by 1941 all areas already photographed had been geologically mapped. Nevertheless, the need for geological maps to assist post-war prospecting was so apparent, and the country to be covered is so vast, that some new method of rapid mapping had to be devised. It was felt that the need would be met if geological maps could be produced at a scale of 1 inch to 8 miles, provided they were sufficiently accurate in topographic detail to serve as guides to travel. Though in such maps there would be considerable sacrifice of geological detail, they would serve to outline, at least approximately, the major geological units, some of which might prove of sufficient interest to warrant later detailed study. It seemed that such mapping would be particularly useful in the northern regions of Canada which the work of early explorers has indicated are underlain largely by granitic rocks. These, so far as is known, are barren of mineral deposits, but within them are known to be areas or bands of 'greenstones' of the type that, in some localities, have been found to contain valuable orebodies. The problem, then, was to devise a method of mapping, particularly of such greenstone bands, that would make it possible to cover a relatively large area-say 30,000 square miles-in one season and at a cost below that of 4-mile mapping, with, of course, some sacrifice of accuracy. The problem seemed to be threefold: (a) to observe as much of the bed-rock as possible; (b) to produce a topographical map of as much of the area as possible, with particular reference to portions of geological interest; and (c) to cover as large an area as possible in a limited time, which meant faster modes of travel than have hitherto been used. The obvious answer to all three phases of the problem was the use of aircraft. If rock types could be broadly differentiated from the air, reconnaissance traverses by air would supply the answer to the first part of the problem. For topography, air photographs taken on reconnaissance flights appeared to be the answer. For the third phase of the problem, the use of aircraft was ideal.

The Courier 300 system basing on conven- tional X-ray technology is applied to complex or large processes. The newer Minexan 202 dis- tributed probe system based on radioisotope technology is developed mainly for simple or small scale applications. In this paper aspects and experiences of these analyzer systems and their applications for flotation control are discussed with particular reference to the role of the computer

High-purity magnesium single crystals, oriented with basal plane parallel to stress axis, were deformed in tension at room temperature so as to form second-order (1011)- (1012) twins. Investigation by optical and replica electron microscopy revealed that these twins can support very large internal strains approaching 1000 pct and that fracture follows as a direct consequence of these strains. At low strains the basal plane within (10i1)- (10i2) twins rotates with increasing deformation until it becomes approximately parallel to the twin boundaries. This rotation is not consistent with deformation by basal slip in the double twin, but may be rationalized in terms of nonbasal slip. Observations also indicate that basal slip in the primary (1011) twin, prior to second-order twinning, may contribute to this rotation. Deformation markings that are difficult to interpret in terms of slip on previously observed systems were noted in the twin bands. A possible means of rationalizing these markings is to relate them to grain boundary shear. The fracture associated with these twins is thought to initiate by formation of voids at the twin boundaries. These grow into microcracks, with ultimate fracture occurring by tearing of the interconnecting regions. THE significance of deformation and fracture along second-order (10i1)-(10i2) twins in polycrystalline magnesium1-' and many magnesium alloys4 was discussed in a previous paper.5 It was noted that this double twinning mode effectively controls the room-temperature deformation and fracture of magnesium single crystals, oriented with the basal plane parallel to the tensile axis. Reed-Hill and Robertson6 observed that, although these crystals may fracture at a macroscopic strain of less than 1 pct, shear strains up to 1000 pct could occur within (1011)- (10i2) twin bands. They concluded that the fracture was "ductile" and resulted from concentrating the deformation into a very small volume. The present research was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the deformation and fracture associated with these twins. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The experimental procedure involved straining high-purity magnesium single crystals in tension at room temperature. Specimens were oriented so that the applied stress direction was within 2 deg of the [1010] crystal axis. The specimen cross section was rectangular with faces closely parallel to (1210) and (0002). The specimen preparation and testing procedures have been described in detail elsewhere.5 Second-order (1011)- (1072) twins nucleated during straining were studied using optical and replica electron microscopy techniques. For the latter, cellulose acetate-carbon double replicas were employed. Observations were made on the (1210) crystal surface, which is the plane of shear for twins of this type. In addition to the single crystals, some investigations were carried out on longitudinal polycrystalline specimens. These were obtained from high-purity magnesium plate with a texture in which the basal planes of the grains tended to be nearly parallel to the specimen axis. All. polycrystalline specimens were annealed prior to testing in order to produce a coarse grain structure, permitting Laue back-reflection X-ray photographs to be obtained from grains of interest. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS a) Deformation Within ( 101 l )-( 1072) Twins. Fig. 1 is an optical micrograph demonstrating the extent of the plastic deformation that can occur in (1011)-(10i2) twin bands. Notice at the lower left corner of the photograph the large displacement of the dark band (a polishing step) where it crosses the twins. The shear strain in the twin band at this position was computed to be 700 pct, using the ratio of step width to twin thickness. It was previously shown5 that (1011)- (1012) twin bands are often composed of small, separate twins aligned close to the macroscopic habit plane. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph from near the upper end of the twin band in Fig. 1. This illustrates that the twin habit often does not coincide exactly with the macroscopic band habit, but may be inclined at a slightly smaller angle to the matrix basal plane. The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

Most legacy drift mines entered the coal reserve from outcrop and developed up-dip. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 changed this way of mining, requiring all new mines with acid- or iron-producing coal seams to be designed so as to prevent gravity water discharges from the mine. This Act requires engineered barriers to contain the mine pool. In many cases, mine layout designs focus primarily on the size and hydraulic performance of the un-mined coal barrier between the up-dip mine pool and areas where down-dip surface discharge is possible. In other cases, designs focus on preventing discharges from barriers contained within the strata surrounding the mined coalbed. This paper focuses on a detailed analysis of the factors responsible for preventing mine pool discharges to surface waters. Important factors include: mine layouts, mining methods, hydraulic head and conductivity, and geology. While the exact causes for the successes and failures could not always be determined, reasonable mechanisms are presented.

Calcium chloride is a conspicuous example of a former waste product that has found a place for itself in the onward march of civilization. Formerly considered a troublesome constituent of the effluent sewage of many chemical manufacturing plants and salt works, it has now become a commercial product of substantial importance, with sales aggregating almost six million dollars in 1929. The point has not yet been reached where it would seem profitable to undertake large-scale production of calcium chloride as a main product, but as a byproduct it has become an item that warrants serious consideration by all who are in a position to recover it at sufficiently low cost. The largely increased demand for bromine and for certain magnesium salts, which are likewise potential byproducts associated with calcium chloride in most salt-works bitterns (and brines generally), adds further impetus to commercial research directed toward the fuller utilization of the natural saline resources of the United States.

La unidad de producción de Cerro de Pasco, perteneciente a la Compañía minera del Centro del Perú, cuenta con importantes reservas de minerales piríticos argentíferos que son tratados en la planta concentradora de San Expedito. Dicho concentrado es usualmente empleado como funderte en el circuito de cobre de la fundición de La Oroya. Sin embargo, dada la finura del material, su porcentaje se ha visto reducido. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una alternativa para recuperar la plata contenida en el concentrado mineral a través de un análisis mineralógico del concentrado pirítico. Posteriormente, se describe el proceso combinado piro-hidrometalúrgico que consiste en la tostación-lixiviación, precipitación con polvo de zinc y la refinación hidrometalúrgica. Finalmente como apoyo a la técnica señalada, se agrega el análisis económico para Centromin.

The history of world nickel production has been affected significantly by the supply and demand situation and fluctuation of LME price of nickel metal. In the beginning of the 1980s, the decline of price and demand lead to the withdrawal of un-competitive producers and the shrinkage of the production capacity. During the same period, Sumitomo Metal Mining maintained the production level with continuous improvement of the traditional matte electrorefining process. However, Sumitomo has recognised that the continuous improvement alone does not promise us the ability to catch up with rapid changes in the world. In the meantime, Sumitomo intensively researched chloride hydrometallurgy and has developed the chloride process for the nickel refining. This includes the solvent extraction and chloride electrowinning in the mixed sulphide process and the chlorine leach of the anode slime arising from matte electrorefining. In the late-1980s, Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to develop a new nickel refining technology based on chloride hydrometallurgy. The new process was designed from the comprehensive aspects involving safety and the environment. Construction of the plant for the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process was commenced in 1991. The MCLE plant with a capacity to 2000 tonnes per month has been commissioned at Niihama since 1992. The process has provided high productivity, overall good economics and high quality of electrolytic nickel produced. After the establishment of the process, Sumitomo has maintained continuous improvement of the new process and has attained the best practice of the work classification.

Mass spectrometric analyses were obtained for naphthalene and anthracene oils, heavy creosote, and three fractions of a pitch. The average molecular weight, aromaticity, and mean structural unit were determined for each fraction. The investigation of these fractions of coal tar has resulted in semiquantitative data for 38 structural types and carbon number distribution data for their alkyl derivatives. The molecular weights of 10 of these structural types indicate ring systems not previously reported in products from high-temperature carbonization of coal. Two of these structures are poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, two are oxygen-containing compounds, one contains sulfur, and five are nitrogen-containing compounds.

In this Bureau of Mines evaluation of the domestic supply position of tungsten, certain tungsten resources in the United States are estimated as to quantity and grade and then are systematically costed in detail (excluding exploration costs). A supply curve is developed which depicts the quantity of tungsten (WO3) up to about 15.5 million short ton units that is producible at calculated price levels ranging from about $13 to $125 per short ton unit. About 10.4 million short ton units are available at a calculated price that is less than the present market price ($40). Total known resources amount to about 40.2 million short ton units. A very large portion of that quantity was not costed due to inadequate information on either resources or processing methods. Further exploration and research would have a significant effect on the availability of tungsten in the United States.
