SUMMARY The Witwatersrand quartzites in which South African gold mining operations are moat exclusively conducted, are notoriously difficult and costly to drill. Despite this situation, however, with the high cost of developing new mines and extending existing mines, together with the rising cost of labour and mining problems resulting from the ever-increasing depths of workings, the demand for raise-boring in these formations is increasing rapidly. Not only is the demand for raises and shafts increasing, but also the length and size of these excavations. Raise-boring studies carried out in South African gold mines have indicated that increased penetration rates and possibly reduced costs could be obtained if higher thrusts were available at the reaming head. Until fairly recently there has been no raise-boring machine suitable for underground use that possessed the thrust and torque characteristics necessary to achieve high penetration rates in hard abrasive quartzite formations and the cutters available were not really developed for high loading. In response to these requirements a raise-borer, the Robbins 83R was designed and built in Seattle, U.S.A. for the Anglo American Corporation. This machine is operating in South African gold mines and is currently being used at a depth of 12 000 ft below surface in one of the. Group's mines. The initial raises bored have substantiated that increased penetration is attainable at high thrust and it is now apparent that the machine is sufficiently versatile to drill raises of up to 12 ft in diameter in quartzite formation over a length of 2 000 ft.

To provide a method for locating trapped miners promptly and accurately. The Approach: Develop a wireless emergency system that is intrinsically safe, compact, easy to operate, reliable, sturdy, and economical. How It Works: A (one transmitter has been developed under Bureau of Mines contracts. The transmitter weighs only a few ounces, is powered by a cap lamp battery, arid can be carried on the miner's belt. A compact loop antenna, which could either be carried by the miner or strategically located in the mine, is used to generate a magnetic field that is sensed by a mobile receiver on the surface. When needed, the antenna is deployed to form a single loop. In mines where the overburden is less than 600 feet, a loop of No. 19 wire approximately 30 feet in circumference is normally adequate. This antenna weighs less than one half pound. In deeper mines, a heavier wire and bigger loop is required; a No. 10 wire deployed around a pillar has been used.

INTRODUCTION To be effective and useful, monitoring of tunnel construction must be carefully planned throughout all steps. A vital and frequently overlooked step is a clear definition of the specific purposes of the instrumentation. Most tunnel construction monitoring has in the past been of benefit to research, the advancement of tunneling practice, wittingly or not. The development of monitoring instrumentation for the benefit of the project from which the data are recovered has very significant potential for risk and cost reduction of soft ground tunneling. A systematic approach to tunnel construction monitoring, from conception to full implementation, includes at least the following nine tasks or steps: Definition of benefits and purposes; design and project specification to draw full benefits; selection of monitoring parameters; selection of instruments and writing of specifications for procurement and installation; procurement and installation; reading and maintenance; data storage and retrieval; interpretation; implementation. Some of these steps are fairly easy and resolved through the use of established theories and technologies. The difficult ones are those that require the bending of minds, those that involve changes in the ways engineers design soft ground tunnels, the way owners pay for tunnels, and the construction is managed, inspected and controlled. A method of predicting uranium extraction rate in underground bacterial leaching of as-blasted ore has been developed. The method is based on the hypothesis that extraction is directly proportional to the volume of a piece of ore that is penetrated by the leaching agent, and that each piece of ore, regardless of size, has been penetrated radially from the external surface to the same depth at a given leaching time. Consequently, given an initial size and assay distribution, extraction should be predictable for a given penetration. Two laboratory bacterial leaching tests under simulated stope leaching conditions were carried out for a periods of 89 and 96 weeks. On completion, the residual ore was screened and analyzed. The information so obtained was employed to provide an elapsed time base for the penetration model, from which predictions of future extraction were made. The finding of solubilized uranium trapped within apparently sol id ore pieces was unexpected. However, it is not recoverable except after crushing, and hence does not affect calculations of underground leaching .

Geologic profiles constructed from exploratory drill holes gave basic geologic information for bidding on 4913 ft. of twin rock tunnels under the Potomac River. To provide additional geologic information for construction, tunnel faces and shafts were mapped throughout excavation. This information was plotted in plan and section so that geologic structure could be projected ahead and prediction of conditions could be made. In structurally complex areas, 3-D models were made and used to show the geologic structure. Core from exploratory drill holes was relogged and structure oriented with that found in the tunnels to make the ultimate use of the core and refine the geologic picture. As excavation proceeded, geologic mapping showed that the projection-prediction approach was useful and essentially correct.

"Abrasive wear and corrosive wear of carbon-steel grinding balls occurred simultaneously during the wet-grinding of hematite iron ore, and Ni-Cu sulphide ore, in laboratory ball mills. Two corrosion control methods, the use of corrosion inhibitors and pH control, were investigated and found to be effective means of reducing or preventing corrosive wear. Up to 50 % reduction of total ball wear resulted from the use of these methods.Corrosive wear is caused principally by the reaction of oxygen in air with the carbon-steel grinding balls, probably by the following reaction: 2Fe + O2 + 2H20 - 2Fe2 + 40H-.IntroductionA survey of corrosion problems in Canadian sulphide ore mines was completed and the findings were published in 197l(l). The corrosion survey was used to develop the present research program with the objective to find more economical and effective ways and means to reduce the corrosion that occurs in the mining and metallurgical industry. The purpose of this presentation is to review the projects being done by staff members of the Corrosion Section, Extraction Metallurgy Division, on corrosive wear and its control in wet-grind ball mills.Both abrasion and corrosion contribute to metal consumption during wet grinding of ores. The total wear of grinding media in this study is assumed to be equal to the sum of corrosive wear and abrasive wear. A great deal of research and development has been reported in the literature on ways to improve the abrasion resistance of grinding media but only a small number of studies has been reported on the corrosion resistance of conventional grinding media."

A Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen volume on the apparent tensile strength of disks of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite. The investigation used a technique developed by the Bureau to determine apparent tensile strength. Because the test specimens were selected without macroscopic defects, that is, cracks, joints, and planes of weakness, the strength variations are solely due to microscopic features. Several replications of each test were performed. Data for each set of specimens were fitted to a power law of the form y = axb, where y = apparent tensile strength, x = specimen volume, and a and b are constants. This power law is essentially a form of Weibull's theory. The average coefficients of correlation for St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite were 0.85, 0.53, and 0.78, respecitvely. In all cases a decrease in strength with increasing volume was noted; in the extreme case, a decrease of 40 pct was noted with an elevenfold increase in volume. The decrease in strength with increasing specimen volume is explained in terms of Weibull's theory.

The Bureau of Mines developed and evaluated a detector-sorting device to separate the copper-bearing portion from the barren portion of native copper ores. Small-scale sorting tests were run on minus 1-inch plus 1/2-inch size materials from the following Michigan samples: Winona, Kingston, and Centennial ores, and "poor" rock from the Champion mine dump. Results showed that 60 to 85 pct of the copper was recovered in 9 to 19 wt-pct of the sorted fraction. About 90 pct of the copper recovered was obtained in the first pass through the sorter. For the Kingston and Centennial ores, combinations of sorter concentrates and fines generated during crushing, resulted in recoveries of 93 and 94 pct, respectively, of the total copper in the samples. The combined products constituted about 66 wt-pct of the total sample and allowed the balance to be discarded with only a 6 to 7 pct copper loss.

Yancik, Assistant Director-Mining, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington. D.C. Subject-"Coal Mining R&D Programs of the Bureau of Mines." (See index for printed text of Dr. Yancik's paper.) Joseph J. Yancik is Assistant Director - Mining for the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for the Bureau's research programs in mining. Principal programs are the coal and metal mining health and safety research, mining extraction and excavation, tunnelling, explosives, mined land reclamation, mine fires and mine waste disposal. He administers these programs through four research centers and through outside contracts and grants.

Laboratory research demonstrated that ceramic wall and floor tile can be produced from electric furnace phosphorus slags composed of calcium silicates. Grinding the slag in a pebble mill, followed by magnetic removal of deleterious magnetite, produced a raw material that could be compounded and formed into wall tile by dry pressing, sintering, and glazing. The effects of process variables such as forming pressure and sintering temperature were investigated. Wall tile bodies produced by this method were comparable to commercial tile. The tiles were readily glazed to a smooth shiny finish and met ASTM Specifications C34-62 for structural clay load-bearing tile. The estimated cost of producing wall tile by this method compared favorably with the retail market value for similar wall tile. Addition of borax or other additives to the ground slag followed by dry pressing and firing likewise produced a commercial grade of floor tile.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of "lost" air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.

Smelting at Mount Morgan started in 1906 with blast furnaces which were replaced by a reverberatory furnace in 1939. The second reverberatory, commissioned in 1944, was replaced by a copper flash smelter in 1972. Flotation concentrates, dried to 0.05 per cent moisture, were oxidised under accurately controlled conditions and produced 45 per cent Cu matte and a slag in the flash smelter. The matte was converted to blister copper and the slag was slowly cooled before grinding and retreatment in a flotation concentrator.

To successfully bid a tunneling contract by machine, a contractor must have a reliable estimate of expected penetration rates and cutter costs. Preferably, these predictions should be independent of those supplied by machine and cutter manufacturers. Therefore, a series of rock index tests have been developed and incorporated in routine Rock Mechanics testing for the purpose of predicting rock boreability. Index properties were evaluated empirically by using rock samples and pertinent construction records from recently machined tunnels. Samples were taken from the completed tunnel walls, tested parallel to machine penetration, and results were compared to localized rates of penetration. Indices are based on two measures of rebound hardness and two measures of abrasive properties. The Shore (C-2 type) Scleroscope and Schmidt (L-type) Hammer were utilized to measure rebound hardness and a Taber Abraser was modified to measure rock abrasiveness and abradeability. Results indicate that rock hardness index properties investigated in this study can be used successfully to predict TBM penetration rates.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the permeability of coal fracture systems as a function of effective stress. The detailed steps in accomplishing this objective are given in Article I of the contract under which the work was conducted as follows: Sec. 1.1 The objective shall be to determine the permeability of the coal fracture system as a function of effective stress. At least three bituminous coals shall be studied and at least five samples of each coal shall be tested. The sample size shall be as large as possible to be representative of coal found in the seam; a minimum of four inches is preferred.

"Since the advent of large volume flotation machines, Cominco Ltd. has actively studied possible application of such machines to their various milling operations. A number of installations have been made and more are on the drawing board. This paper gives a description of these units, information as to choice of equipment, and information as to operating experience. Mechanical and operating details of six installations are summarized. Three different types of machines are discussed.Pine PointThe original Pine Point zinc flotation circuit comprised conventional roughing with two stages of cleaning. Over the years with increase in feed tonnage there have developed two adverse conditions; namely, a reduction in zinc concentrate grade coupled with an increase in MgO in the concentrate. This resulted in higher freight payments along with more severe smelter penalties. An intensive test program, in 1971, showed that the concentrate grade could be raised by 1.5 units of zinc along with a reduction in MgO from 0.8% to 0.47.. Subsequently this was done by adding two additional stages of cleaning using 16 cells of Denver 200-V's. The project was completed in January 1973 at a cost of $510,000 to give an estimated annual savings of about $390,000.Selection of the Denver Model 200-V was based on minimum floor space requirement, availability, and favourable operational and maintenance experience with Denver 100’s. As it happens it was possible to ""shoe-horn"" the 16 cells into place with a minimum of plant alteration. Some problems have been encountered with a tendency to ""sand up"" at high pH, particularly at the corners. Otherwise operational service has been very good."

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a continuing research effort to develop processes for increasing the recovery and utilization of fluorine from low-grade resources. This current research has shown that over 98 percent of the fluorine in phosphate rock is extracted when the ore is treated with excess phosphoric acid in the presence of water vapor at 150° to 180° C. More than 80 percent of the fluorine can be recovered as fluosilicic acid, which can then be converted to commercially useful hydrogen fluoride or fluorspar by previously developed Bureau processes. Extraction of P205 from the ore was about 98 percent in batch tests and 90 percent in semicyclic tests.

Froth flotation has been described by several authors" as being analogous to a first-order rate process. Although a few investigators"," have found orders other than one fit their data best, the rate is described most often by the first-order equation, [ ] where r is rate of disappearance of floatable mineral by flotation, C(t) is concentration of floatable mineral in the cell, t is time, and k is first-order flotation rate constant. One of the difficulties in using this rate equation to develop a mathematical description of an actual flotation process is the determination of a suitable value of the constant k. The value of k, which reflects the floatability of the floatable mineral, is dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions in the cell, type and concentration of flotation reagents used, pulp density, and pH, method of froth removal, aeration rate, particle characteristics, and many other factors. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that each particle of floatable material has a distinct value of k and that a unique distribution of k values exists for given feed and cell conditions. This has been observed and discussed by several investigators, and mathematical descriptions of the batch cell and steady-state continuous cell with distributed flotation rate constant have been developed." The mathematical description in the form of a transfer function of the continuous or flow cell under unsteady-state conditions with a distributed flotation rate constant has not been presented in the literature. Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique to grow metallic fibers from a sulfide mineral. In this research, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) was made sulfur deficient, and the remaining sulfur partitioned to the iron in the mineral to liberate metallic copper, or to the copper to liberate metallic iron. The metals formed on the surface as fibers and in the interior as spherical particles. Fiber growth is very fast. Lengths of 3 to 4 cm form in a matter of minutes, and the diameter of individual fibers is less than 1 µm. The mechanism of fiber growth is explained, and the reactions are reversible as predicted. Copper fibers can be made to grow from the surface at 400° C or to dissolve back onto the solid surface and be replaced by iron fibers at 625° C. Growth and dissolution can also be controlled to form copper/iron duplex fibers.

The first phase of our work for PMSRC on this contract was devoted to a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of electromagnetic (EM) noise measurements and data taken by several contractors for use in the design of operational and emergency mine communications. Pertinent measurements and data of other selected investigators were also included in the evaluation. This assessment treated the measurements and instrumentation used, the data analysis and presentation methods, and the utility of the final results. This phase concluded with the identification of the most useful results and methods, the remaining data gaps, the contractor most qualified to fill these data gaps, and the definition (with PMSRC and this contractor - NBS, National Bureau of Standards) of a follow-on noise measurement program, instrumentation system, and data processing methods tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. A partial bibliography of references related to electromagnetic and seismic noise and propagation in the frequency bands of interest was also compiled during this first phase. The body of this Part of the final report presents a summary of the findings of our EM noise assessment, together with detailed recommendations regarding the new noise measurements to be taken and the instrumentation and data processing methods to be used. This work was done during the latter part of 1971 and the early part of 1972. During subsequent phases of the contract ADL was asked to perform on-going evaluations of the continuing program of electromagnetic (EM) noise and propagation measurements made by Bureau contractors, and to utilize pertinent data from these measurements to make performance estimates for

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.
