Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina is the fourth largest airport in the southeast region of the United States. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is currently underway with planning, designing and constructing are placement Passenger Terminal as part of the Major Capital Improvements Program at Raleigh Durham International Airport. The Terminal C Expansion and Renovation Project will replace the existing Terminal C structure with a new processor building and concourse. The project is separated into several contracts. The early stage contracts are constructing a west side storm water management facility, relocating taxiways, installing new drainage systems, installing new aircraft apron pavement, Demolition, the Central Energy Plant and Early Foundations. The later projects are the Terminal Building, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Information Technology Systems and Integration, Furniture, Furnishings & Equipment and Specialty Millwork. The Terminal Building will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 constructs the north half of the new terminal. Airline operations will move to the new terminal at the completion of this phase. Phase 2 completes construction of the south processor building. The full build out of the project, subject to funding availability, will replace the remainder of the south concourse. The Program’s primary focus is to replace the existing passenger Terminal C with a new terminal that will provide more passenger gates and larger passenger screening, ticketing and baggage handling facilities. The planning for the New Terminal C Program began in 2002 with construction starting in March, 2003. The continuing growth of passenger airline travel in the Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area requires RDU to expand its facilities to keep up with the present and future growth within the Region. In October of 2002, the RDU Airport Authority selected Parsons Transportation Group as the Program Manager/Construction Manager to help assist in the development of the Terminal C expansion program. RDU Airport Authority selected the Seattle Washington Office of URS Corporation as the Engineer of Record for the West Side Storm Water Management Facilities. The Westside Storm Water Management Facilities Project became one of the early critical path activities of the overall RDUAA Terminal C Expansion Program. The Briar Creek Reservoir had been constructed to accommodate storm water runoff to the west of the Airport. The existing 1.5 m culvert that drained runoff from the airport terminal (area) to the reservoir was insufficient in supporting the additional flows

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. SUMMARY The Witwatersrand quartzites in which South African gold mining operations are moat exclusively conducted, are notoriously difficult and costly to drill. Despite this situation, however, with the high cost of developing new mines and extending existing mines, together with the rising cost of labour and mining problems resulting from the ever-increasing depths of workings, the demand for raise-boring in these formations is increasing rapidly. Not only is the demand for raises and shafts increasing, but also the length and size of these excavations. Raise-boring studies carried out in South African gold mines have indicated that increased penetration rates and possibly reduced costs could be obtained if higher thrusts were available at the reaming head. Until fairly recently there has been no raise-boring machine suitable for underground use that possessed the thrust and torque characteristics necessary to achieve high penetration rates in hard abrasive quartzite formations and the cutters available were not really developed for high loading. In response to these requirements a raise-borer, the Robbins 83R was designed and built in Seattle, U.S.A. for the Anglo American Corporation. This machine is operating in South African gold mines and is currently being used at a depth of 12 000 ft below surface in one of the. Group's mines. The initial raises bored have substantiated that increased penetration is attainable at high thrust and it is now apparent that the machine is sufficiently versatile to drill raises of up to 12 ft in diameter in quartzite formation over a length of 2 000 ft.

India produces about 70 Mt/a (77million stpy) of coal ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from burning about 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) of coal for electric power generation. The average ash content is 35%. In contrast, the United States produces about 70 Mt/a (77 million stpy) of coal ash from burning 800 Mt/a (880million stpy) of coal for power generation. Its average ash content is less than 10%. In 1998, GAI Consultants Inc.(GAI) embarked on a federally funded, multiyear project to assist the government of India in solving its growing coal-ash management problem.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

Dust control in longwall coal mining depends primarily on the prevention of dust at the source and secondarily on the suppression of airborne dust. One of the primary methods for the prevention of dust is the wetting of the coal face prior to extraction, which can be achieved with water spray systems installed on the shield supports. The spray droplets must travel across the airway to the longwall face, where high ventilation air speeds can entrain water droplets and prevent them from reaching the face thus minimizing the dust control at the source. Through an evaluation of spray plume characteristics in a wind tunnel, the droplet size and droplet drift behavior was determined. This drift behavior was examined by evaluating the spray plume concentration drop and the droplet size shift near the nozzle exit at varying air speeds. Based on these evaluations, CFD modeling was applied to simulate the spray behavior for varying geometries. These results led to the selection of appropriate spray nozzles capable of carrying water droplets to the face at higher air speeds, resulting in an adequate wetting of the coal face and reduced dust generation.

The 73rd Street Tunnel Project is part of “The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan” (TARP)also known as the Deep Tunnel Project, and is located in the Village of Bedford Park, County of McCook, State of Illinois. The project consists of a ø 4.42 meter × 2,060 meter long (14´-6? bore, 6,760 foot)tunnel. The completed tunnel is used as a bypass tunnel for the McCook Cup Reservoir Project. The project was awarded to Affholder Inc. of St. Louis, in 2000. The paper describes the project in which a new, high-powered open gripper type main beam machine was used in which high advance rates have been achieved using conventional muck haulage techniques. Features of the project include the installation of rock support consisting of counter-sunk rock bolts that are required to be pull-tested for strength per project specifications. Installation and testing of the bolts are done during the boring cycle. Muck haulage was done by conventional muck car train and hoisting at the construction shaft. As the site layout did not include a tail tunnel, the trains needed to be shuttled at the shaft bottom. Even with the bolting requirements and the muck haulage without a tail tunnel, the Affholder site personnel still achieved high advance rates on the 73rd Street Project.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

Microorganisms are finding more use in the mineral industry, with extensive research efforts being reported in 1991. Most of these research efforts were presented in two major meetings, the SME Annual Meeting in Denver (February, 1991) and the Engineering Foundation Conference about Mineral Bioprocessing in Santa Barbara (June 1991). In addition, several articles were published in the IMM Transactions, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing and Water, Air. and Solid Pollution Journal. The literature can be categorized as: • Review articles presenting an overview of the activities in the use of biotechnology in mineral processing. • Research efforts into genetic manipulation of microorganisms to perform a specified job. • Studies in bioleaching of metals from different types of ores. • Biotreatment of wastes from the mineral industry including acidic mine waters, uranium tailings, cyanide destruction, etc. • Investigations into the role of microorganisms in the energy materials, such as oil, coal, tar sands, oil shales, etc. Smith (Mineral Bioprocessing Conference) presented a review of research efforts as well as practical applications of biotechnology in the mineral industry. In another article, Smith et al. (Minerals Engineering) emphasized that extensive fundamentals and applied research work should be pursued to explore the fundamentals, potential and practicality of the various possible uses of microorganisms in mineral engineering.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

Although the occurrence of deposits of titanium minerals on Kenya’s present day beaches and adjacent dune systems has been well documented, the potential for older formations to host economically viable deposits had not been recognised until recently. The Magarini sands formation in Kenya has been found to contain deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon in quantities and grades that have the potential to be commercially exploited. Since 1995, Tiomin Resources Inc. has explored these deposits and has identified one deposit, the Kwale project, as being able to support the development of a mine producing some 300,000 tpa ilmenite, 75,000 tpa rutile and 37,000 tpa zircon. Tiomin plans to start production by late 2002. Construction of a US$137 million operation is set to commence in the first half of 2001.

To obtain microbial cultures with the ability to efficiently leach copper ion from chalcopyrite, microbial samples from acid mine drainage sites were mixed and then subjected to mutation using sodium nitrite (NaNO2), diethyl sulfate (DES), ultraviolet light (UV) and their combinations. Mixed cultures with a much stronger ability to leach copper ion (identified as mixed cultures A, B, C, D and E) were obtained by screening on leaching media. Leaching tests showed that mixed culture E had the best leaching performance and increased the Cu2+ content by 120.5% in 20 days, compared to a control without mutation treatment. Mixed culture E grows well on Leathen leaching medium supplemented with Cu2+ (at a final concentration of 32 g/L), reaching 3.2 × 107 cells/L after 15 days, while the unmutated control culture cannot survive beyond 15 days, indicating that mixed culture E is more tolerant of high concentrations of Cu2+. In addition, continuous leaching by mixed culture E is very effective at a pulp density of 1%. These results suggest that it has the potential for industrial applications.

This paper is concerned with subsidence prediction methods and in particular with two techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. In more detail, the hyperbolic tangent profile function, as developed by VPI&SU from field data pertaining to the eastern U.S. coalfields, and an influence function method currently being adapted for the same region, are presented and discussed. The applicability, advantages and limitations of these techniques are examined and comparisons are presented with field measurements. Computer software developed for the application of these prediction methods, for two widely used personal computer systems, are also discussed and a number of examples are presented demonstrating the potential of such programs.

The iron nugget process is an economical, environmentally friendly, cokeless, single-step pig iron making process. Residence time dependent process requirements for production of pig iron nuggets at a fixed furnace temperature (1425 C) were investigated. Three chemically and physically different products were produced after complete reduction to iron, depending on the residence time in the furnace. These products were direct reduced iron (DRI), transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and pig iron nuggets (PIN). The increase in the carbon content of the system as a function of residence time was detected by optical microscopy and Microhardness measurements. Sufficient carbon dissolution for the production of pig iron nuggets was obtained after 40 minutes residence time. The pig iron nuggets produced had chemical and physical properties similar to blast furnace pig iron. They were liquid state products and slag was completely separated from the metal.

Have technological advancements in underground coal mining driven people&apos;s skills to new highs or have the expanded skills of mining people driven the industry&apos;s technological advancements. Who knows? What we do know is that both our technology and our people have made meaningful and significant advancements. Overall, longwall systems continue to increase productivity and retreat faster. Globally, gate road development is the primary bottleneck in a longwall mine. The primary bottleneck in gate road development is roofbolting. Generally, roofbolting is the bottleneck in room and pillar operations as well. This paper will present an integrated manufacturer&apos;s (Joy Mining Machinery) vision of the future in comparison to current equipment performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on roofbolter technologies.
