The results of bench blasting on quarries, have important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc., and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in mine producing chain and its results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. Within the scope of this study, the three different hydraulic excavators’ working performances have been studied considering the particle size distribution after bench lasting at a quarry in Istanbul Turkey. Five shots have been realized on the quarry and average particle size of muckpile after each shot were assessed by digital image analysis method. Bucket loading times have been measured by stopwatch study after five shots. Excavator bucket loading times were also estimated by bucket loading time estimation formula which was published in ISEE 2007 Conference, Ozdemir et al. 2007. Estimated and measured times have been statistically analyzed and the accuracy rate of formula has been determined for five events.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015. "The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully and efficiently process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals.The KCJ is applicable to a broad range of fine mineral recovery duties, with current installations in the mineral sands, tin, tantalum, gold and nickel industries. Other areas of application are being developed with mineral commodities including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite and apatite/feldspar.Information on the principles of operation of the KCJ, typical performance figures in a number of application areas, comparison to centrifugal concentrators, key elements for a successful KCJ operation and recent developments with the KCJ are presented in this paper to demonstrate the capabilities of the KCJ.INTRODUCTIONAfter a number of years of development by inventor Chris Kelsey, the first commercial KCJ unit was installed at the Renison Bell tin mine in Tasmania, Australia, in 1992. The subsequent decade saw the installation of further KCJ units in applications including tin, tantalum and mineral sands.Development and improvement in KCJ hardware continued and culminated in the introduction of the high-capacity Model J1800 KCJ and standard features such as an automatic screen cleaning system. This opened up further markets and resulted in Model J1800 KCJ installations in the gold and nickel industries, as well as further KCJ installations in the mineral sands and tin industries. In recent years, work has continued on application of the KCJ to many other duties in industries including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite, apatite/feldspar, etc."

Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

The Egnatia Odos (Odos meaning road) is one of Greece’s largest ever highway construction projects and one of Europe’s most important. The Highway will assist in the connection of the Greek Ionian/Adriatic Coast with Turkey and the Black Sea reviving an historic Roman alignment “Via Egnatia” connecting Rome to Constantinople (now Istanbul). There are 74 twin tunnels (60 bored and 14 cut-and-cover) with lengths ranging from 160 m (175 yd) to 4,600 m (5,031 yd) and 100 m (109 yd) to 270 m (295 yd),respectively. The complex geology and resulting physical geography have had a major influence on both the design and construction of these tunnels. This paper describes the management, design and construction challenges of these numerous tunnels.

El presente trabajo responde al estudio geológico realizado al distrito minero geológico San Rafael durante el período 1979 y 1980 a través de un mapeo geológico de 3,500 hectáreas. De acuerdo a este estudio se visualiza que la mina de San Rafael es la única productora de estaño y cobre en el Perú, así como la mina Quenamari produce plomo, zinc y plata. Sin embargo, se demostró que la frontera peruano-boliviano no es el límite de la mineralización de estaño, sino que existen otros yacimientos minerales de estaño. Asi también se describe la geología local y regional, los depósitos minerales y la mineralización del estaño en el Perú y Bolivia.

En Minera las Bambas se implementó un modelo integrado de gestión dentro del área de Entrenamiento Mina con el objetivo de preparar, fortalecer, monitorear y revalidar las capacidades teóricas y prácticas de los operadores de equipo pesado, a través de, un adecuado proceso de entrenamiento que utiliza estándares, infraestructura y tecnología de primer nivel, agregando valor al ciclo de minado. Entre los años 2017 y 2019, se incrementó los equipos de la flota de mina para el futuro desarrollo del tajo, generándose una necesidad de reclutar, formar y adecuar operadores locales y externos; para lo cual se diseñó un proceso de entrenamiento seguro y eficiente.

"El presente trabajo describe la utilización del método de corte y relleno descendente en la explotación en la mina Yauricocha. Los métodos convencionales utilizados fueron los de cobre, corte y relleno, etc, siendo aplicables hasta 1848. Posteriormente se utiliza el método de corte y relleno descendente en el minado de ciertas áreas, donde la dificultad de trabajar con otros métodos se presentaba en los pilares, dejándolos abandonados. Es por ello, que la aplicación de este último método es útil en la recuperación de pilares como en el minado propiamente dicho. Asimismo se describe el proceso que comprende: la preparación de la chimenea y subnivel de extraccíón del primer piso, el relleno y finalmente la secuencia de explotación. "

Desde la década de los años 80s, se han venido desarrollando variaciones del método de polarización inducida con el fin de obtener mediciones de mayor profundidad y con mayor resolución y certeza. Los primeros trabajos fueron hechos por el equipo liderado por John Kingman en la Anaconda Copper Company, y el desarrollo continuó hasta 1986, cuando fue introducido el primer sistema de configuración distribuida. La investigación llevada a cabo por Anaconda y Arco facilitó el desarrollo posterior de los sistemas Titan 24 y Orion 3D (Quantec Ltd.) y MIMDAS (Mount Isa Minerals).

El presente artículo describe la situación del plomo y los problemas que enfrenta nivel mundial. El plomo tiene una serie de características físicas y químicas que lo hacen deseable para muchos usos industriales; es blando, maleable, y puede mezclarse fácilmente para formar aleaciones. Es a partir de 1956 donde el consumo de plomo en los Estados Unidos aumentó a 40% en el uso de la industria automovilística. Posteriormente, entre 1950 y 1956 esta industria decrece y los siguientes 30 años mostraron a los Estados Unidos como un gran productor de plomo. Sin embargo, la situación ha ido cambiando y dicho país de autosuficiente, ha pasado a ser dependiente de la producción foránea. La principal causa de esta declinación es que con el incremento del consumo, su industria minera no ha podido mantener el paso y aún más ha decrecido, así como los costos de producción y la disminución de sus reservas. Por ello, las medidas que se tomaron fueron la inclusión de fondos, que eran disponibles para sus compras de plomo y zinc, de forma que los mineros americanos obtengan una especie de subsidio que les permita seguir operando.

In the last four decades significant effort has been devoted to designing piles in expansive clay soils. Nevertheless, only a scant effort has been devoted to the elimination of heave forces acting on the upper part of lightly loaded piles. For this purpose, an investigation site was established in Karmiel in Northern Israel. On this site sixteen unloaded cast-in-situ piles, both uncoated and coated, were installed in a moderately expansive clay soil in the end of summer 1996. The piles were executed to different depths ranging between 2m and 7m and were observed over a period of 27 months. Another nine unloaded cast-in-situ bored piles were installed at the end of summer 1998 for carrying out pullout tests. These piles were embedded two meters from the ground surface. Results obtained from observations and from full-scale static pull out tests showed that separating the piles from the surrounding clay in the active zone by a twin walled sleeve eliminated the heave forces significantly. The scope of the work is, determining of the elimination degree of the heave forces due to the provision of the above sleeve.

Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (nonentry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

The most expensive unit operation in the beneficiation of ores is grinding. The correct design of the grinding circuit is crucial to prevent unnecessary use of energy. Proper design and evaluation of SAG grinding circuits require the specific grinding energy, which is determined experimentally. The most common tests in SAG grinding are the Drop Weight Test, from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center (JKMRC) in Australia, and the SAG Power Index, from MinnovEX Technologies in Canada. The application of these tests to the same ore sample commonly produces different results. The work reported here aims at comparing the application of these two tests in the determination of the specific grinding energy for sulfide copper ores from Sequeirinho and Sossego deposits, Sossego Project, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD, in Para state, Brazil.
