This paper presents the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return project in the Lower Pawelek reservoir of the Falls City Field, Karnes County, Southwest Texas. Production is from the Lower Wilcox section at an average depth of 6,030 ft on the downthrown side of a "down to the coast" fault. Of particular interest is that the reservoir oil is high gravity and low viscosity but far undersaturated with gas at the original reservoir pressure and temperature. The early pressure and production history indicated only a partial or limited water drive, and this fact, coupled with the characteristics of the reservoir fluid and artificial lifting problem.. made advisable the water injection program to maintain reservoir pressure. The paper includes a description of the reservoir and reservoir fluids, the pressure and production history, a description of the water injection facilities, and the results of reservoir calculations involving Hurst's unsteady state flow and the material balance equations for calculation of water influx and prediction of the pressure-production relationship at various rates of withdrawal. The reservoir calculations and initial field results indicate that reservoir pressures in excess of 85 per cent of original pressure can be maintained by control of water injection even at very high rates of production. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return program in the Lower Pawelek reservoir, Falls City Field, Karnes County. Texas, and to calculate an empirical relationship between pressure and production in this limited or partial water drive reservoir. Location The Falls City Field (Fig. 1) is located two miles north of the town of Falls City in Karnes County, Texas, and is approximately 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on U. S. Highway 181. Discovery and Development The initial block of leases was taken after a surface geological survey identified a major east-west fault and closure on the south or downthrown section. The discovery well, Southern Minerals Corporation's Joe F. Bartosch 1; was completed at 4,650 ft in the Lower Bartosch sand in December, 1944. Drilling was continuous until December, 1946, and resulted in the discovery of 12 oil reservoirs between 4,600 and 6,050 ft in the Middle and Lower Wilcox formations. These are shown on the cross-section (Fig. 2). As of the current date there are 64 oil wells completed as follows: Southern Gulfshore Magnolia Minerals Oil Petroleum Reservoir Corp. Co. Corp. Excessive residual stress in Al engine blocks may result in cylinder distortion which reduces engine operating efficiency. As such, neutron diffraction was used to measure residual strain along the Fe liners and Al, in the hoop, radial and axial orientations with respect to the cylinder axis, at the cylinder interbore region. Residual stresses were subsequently calculated using generalized Hooke's law and related to the microstructure along the cylinder bridge. The results suggest that the residual stresses in the Al interbore region are tensile and increased with depth in the axial direction of the cylinder. The increase in residual stress at the bottom of the cylinder coincides with a finer and more uniform microstructure in this region of the cylinder. The refinement in microstructure at the bottom of the cylinder likely increased alloy strength, thereby decreasing this section's susceptibility to distortion. This study successfully quantified the residual stress profiles in a heat treated engine block and related the stress profiles to an as-cast engine block.

Various methods have been developed through US Bureau of Mines research to remove gas in advance of, during, and subsequent to mining. These include drilling horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening, and vertical boreholes stimulated for drainage in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. Techniques and equipment now exist that allow drilling a borehole at any angle to the vertical, and even along an arc. Stimulation treatments have also been developed that provide for increased gas production capability. This paper describes the long-term production history of five select gas drainage installations. The Bureau of Mines conducted or participated in four studies. The remaining study was conducted by the Equitable Gas Co. Principles of storage, release, and migration of coal bed gases The amount of gas contained within any given area of a coalbed depends on the coal's inherent storage capacity and the physical conditions of the coalbed. The gas storage capacity of coal is primarily a function of rank. As such, it cannot be affected by the presence of drainage holes (Kim, 1977). Certain physical conditions of the coalbed can, however, be changed that will affect the release and migration of gas. By pumping water out of the coalbed through the vertical boreholes, two important changes occur - pressure is reduced and water saturation is lowered. Reducing reservoir pressure releases gas as the coalbed adjusts and equilibrates gas to the change. Increasingly large amounts of gas are released for each incremental decrease in pressure. Lowering the water saturation level raises the permeability of the coalbed to gas and allows the gas to more readily migrate to the wellbore (Kisse and Edwards, 1975). For horizontal boreholes completed near mine openings, the coalbed has already undergone a pressure or water saturation reduction phase. This condition thus allows such boreholes to be highly productive with minimal water production. Despite the fact that a great many industrial processes depend on efficient contact between a gas stream and a bed of broken solids for their operation, the data in the literature are very meager. Several investigations3 have been undertaken, but the work has been limited in scope and application. BUREAU OF MINES PROGRAM OF RESEARCH For the past 10 years the United States Bureau of Mines has been engaged in research with the object of formulating a more or less complete quantitative theory of the workings of the iron blast furnace. Obviously, in order to do this one of the essentials is to have considerable definite information on the laws of gas flow through beds of broken solids. This report in a brief summary of the experimental work on the problem which has been done at the North Central Experiment Station. The complete report with more detailed tabulation of the data and explanations of the experimental procedure is in process of publication in the form of a bulletin.

Recent investigations of finely ground materials have verified Rittinger's law of crushing.4, This law states that the surface produced is proportional to the work expended in the crushing operation. Thus, for a unit of work applied to crushing quartz a definite amount of surface will be produced. Obviously, this amount of work applied to some other mineral will not produce equivalent surface. It follows that in an investigation of mill practice, where ore is being crashed, the relative crushing resistance of the component minerals must be known. In a previous investigation of the Rittinger law,5 the crashing resistance that is, the work required to produce a unit of surface - was accurately determined for quartz. The surface values were obtained by means of the rite of dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid.6 If it were possible so to measure surface on other minerals the determination of relative crushing, resistance would be a simple matter; however, the results obtained on minerals other than quartz by a dissolution method were not encouraging. Moreover, if accurate values could be obtained by dissolution this method could probably never be used on a mixture of minerals such as occurs in an ore.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

"The pure mineral chromite, FeO.Cr203, consists of ferrous and chromic oxides, chemically united in equal molecular proportions. Unfortunately, pure chromite as defined above appears to be a rare exception. In most chrome ores the mineral may be considered a combination of spinel, MgO.Al203, and chromite, with the latter predominating. The ratios between the four common constituents Fe0, Mg0, Cr203 and A203 vary greatly, and other minor constituents such as TiO2 and. Fe203 may also be present.In the mechanical concentration of chromite ores the maximum grade of concentrates that can be produced is thus limited by the composition of the chrome minerals present. Pure chromite contains 68 per cent Cr203, but the Cr203 content of the chrome minerals in commercial ores varies between 45 and 60 per cent and the average is not far from 55 per cent.Chromite is usually associated with serpentine. Other silicates, quartz, dolomite, magnetite, ilmenite and other iron Minerals are frequently present.The amenability of a chrome ore to concentration, depends upon the kind and amount of the various gangue minerals present and the amount .of crushing necessary to separate the chromite from them.A relatively small amount of chrome ore is concentrated by milling. In most cases the mine product is simply hand-sorted. Such chrome deposits as are known in the United. States can not be worked in this way on account of one or both of the following conditions: High cost of labor and finely disseminated impurities. There are, however, several deposits in the United States, Canada, and Alaska which may be able to compete with imported or by efficiently utilizing modern ore-dressing and milling methods."

"In copper percolation-leaching plants the ore is usually crushed to a maximum size of about three-eighths inch. Ordinarily an ore is crushed as finely as feasible since the rate of extraction of copper is increased with decreasing size of particles owing to the greater surface exposed and. the shorter path required for solutions to come into contact with the minerals to be dissolved. However, greater degree of crushing also increases the amount of fines. When ores are charged into leaching vats the coarse and fine material tend to segregate, resulting in channeling of solutions and leaving the areas where fines predominate only partly leached. An improvement in the method of charging the ore into vats that would minimize the deleterious effects of the segregations of fines would increase the percentage extraction of copper.The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.4 recently installed classifiers to remove the primary slimes from the ore, before charging it into the leaching vats. This necessitates a separate agitation treatment for the slimes.Recent publications5 of the bureau have shown the advantages of agglomeration followed by trickle leaching to extract copper from concentrator tailings. It was shown that when equal parts of ore crushed to about 1/4-inch size and concentrator tailings were agglomerated with approximately 10 per cent of moisture, either in the form of water or leaching solution, and the mass was charred into a leaching vat the ore could be treated successfully by open-drainage trickle leaching. Even with 30 or 35 per cent of minus 200-mesh material present the ore could be leached, if it was not flooded with solution.The results obtained in agglomerating ores and slimes suggested the possible advantages to be gained by wetting the crushed ore for standard percolation-leaching plants before charging it into the vats. Wetting the ore whould make the fine material and slime cohere to the larger pieces of ore thus tend to prevent segregation when the ore is charged into the vats. The bureau, at its southwest Experiment Station and in cooperation with the Department of Mining and University of Arizona, Tucson Ariz., therefore made a study to work: out A way in which slimes could be handled in percolation leaching. The study showed that the method of charging ore into the leaching vats governed the distribution the fines and consequently the rate extraction of copper. The results of the study reported in this paper."

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Toe -Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately 111. 20 to 45° E. The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1928, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting. The total oil production for the Salt Flat field to and including September, 1930, was 19,833,215 barrels. The most reliable figures available of water production were compiled for a number of leases and wells in the south half of the field. These data show that the water percentage for the average well in this part of the field increased steadily from 30 per cent for January, 1929, to 81 per cent for December, 1929. The estimated daily water production of the entire field for December, 1929, was about 82,000 barrels as compared with a daily oil production of 29,725 barrels; or approximately 2.7 barrels of water were produced with each barrel of oil 14 months after the discovery well was completed in the Edwards pay. Estimates of water production in the (Old) Luling field, which is near the Salt Flat field, place the daily water production at about 150,000 barrels (July, 1929) as compared with a daily oil production of 11,000 barrels. These figures indicate that in the Luling field approximately 14 barrels of water must be lifted for each barrel of oil produced. The Luling field was discovered in August, 1922, and a peak annual production of 10,210,000 barrels was reached during 1924. The production during 1928 was 5,057,000 barrels of oil from an average of 567 producing wells for the year. Although water appeared early in the life of the Luling field, the oil production has been well sustained. Another feature of outstanding interest is the comparatively few producing wells that have been abandoned on account of water during the soven years of operation of this field. Comparison of data between the Luling and Salt Flat fields is of importance because of the nearness of the two fields. The Luling field is a narrow strip or "shoestring" approximately 8 miles long, with a maximum width of 3,400 feet. Production is obtained in the Edwards limestone at an average depth of 2,200 feet on the upthrow side of a fault. Similar conditions of accumulation are found in the Salt Flat field at greater depth to Salt Flat field as outlined (April, 1930) is about 7 miles long? with a maximum width of 2,000 feet. At the time the field work was begun (July, 1929) in the Salt Flat field, drilling operations had been almost completed in the south half of the field, while the north half was still under development. Cross sections and a structure contour map interpret the subsurface conditions in the south half of the field, where the water conditions first became serious.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. "INTRODUCTION In the State of Alabama few mines produce coal clean enough to be marketed directly without being washed. This is particularly true where the coal is to be used for the production of metallurgical coke. In washing plants where single-compartment jigs alone are used to treat a large range of sizes, it has been found that the washed coal finer than 1/4-inch contains a large proportion of free impurities and is much higher in ash content than are the coarser sizes. To reduce the ash content of this fine material with jigs usually entails a greet reduction in capacity and a loss of coarse coal in the refuse. This investigation, conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Alabama By-Products Corporation, was undertaken to determine whether the fine washed coal from jigs could be economically re-treated on coal washing tables.COALS TESTEDThrough,the cooperation of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, samples of fine-sized washed coal were obtained from their washeries at Bradford and Gamma.The Bradford mine, on the Black Creek bed, yields a low-ash, medium-volatile coal with fairly good coking properties. This coal is blended with coal from the Mary Lee bed for coking purposes and compensates for the high ash content of the latter. The Black Creek bed is about 30 inches thick and seam analyses show an ash content of from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. In the Bradford mine the undercut is about 6 inches high, so that a large proportion of fines is produced."

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr,5 Fieldner and Davis,6 and others, 7 has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M.8 standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting she results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses.

"INTRODUCTION The U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. At that time the common types of absorbent, materials were compounded ones containing the above ingredients as well as kieselguhr, paraffin, gas oils, charcoal, bituminous coal, etc.Kuryla and Clevenger4 investigated absorbents of the above type and made the following statement concerning them:"

"INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."
