Engineered-in material handling problems are responsible for significant unrealized value in mineral processing plants. At the root, is a lack of awareness and understanding of bulk material handling science and how important it is, especially in early design stages. Mineral processes add value to mined raw feedstock through physical and chemical transformations in unit operations, but only if the material can flow through them. Essentially, each unit operation receives a unique feedstock and produces a unique product to be collected, transported, and fed into the next unit operation. Such material-handling systems can only be expected to achieve design throughput if the system equipment is designed to the materials’ characteristics, over their full range of conditions. This requires quantification of flow properties to support the necessary customized equipment designs. Too often, assumptions or “library values” of a material’s properties are used as the basis for flow modelling and conceptual, and sometimes even detailed, design. This is especially true for hazardous materials like uranium ore, for which the additional precautions, costs, and time necessary for safe handling are often used to rationalize postponing or even bypassing testing. The surprises that often transpire in the wake of insufficient material handling consideration can have acute and costly effects. Fortunately, there is a better way.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. "Despite being a field of study that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world, consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of study is usually through shorttime internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations.Indirect practical training is now possible since that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality — in the context of Mining 4.0 — can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al., 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other, especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers.Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and knowhow could be developed and/or enhanced, are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.An early example of asolely experimental mines is the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Mine site operated by LKAB in Sweden, where systematic research on rock mechanics and mining engineering was successfully carried out in the 1980s. As a result, the developed underground mining technology was applied in LKAB’s mines at a later stage. There have also been research mines within collieries such as the former Lake Macquarie Mine at New South Wales in Australia and the Zeche Tremonia Mine in Germany), but these are no longer in operation (Mischo, 2015)."

Para solucionar el problema generado, tras años de operación, por una elevación excesiva de la pila de lixiviación respecto del sistema colector, Minera La Zanja buscó incrementar la velocidad de percolación aplicando el procedimiento de preriego de las celdas a lixiviar. El trabajo describe el desarrollo teórico-práctico de preriego del pad, el diseño de operación y la comparación de resultados obtenidos a nivel industrial en 2017-2018 con el sistema de riego convencional. Se destaca la rentabilidad de este tipo de aplicación.

En el 2017, con un capital de prototipo de $35 000, un retorno de inversión de 7 meses y una contribución adicional de reservas Au en 2018 de 3 612 331 onzas (37% adicional del estimado en exploración de Yanacocha en un año), se implementó una solución robótica para la evaluación óptima de reserva de minerales, gracias a la que se logró incrementar la ley promedio de 0.35% a 0.93% Au, así como la precisión de bloques en depósito de mineral, de 69% a 89%, sin sustituir la mano de obra (como ingenieros geólogos), sino brindándoles una herramienta precisa adicional. Asimismo, al utilizar al robot en la exploración y prospección de minerales, se logró reducir campañas de exploración de 4 años a 1.5 años, así como los costos, de $5M a $2M por campaña de exploración. Finalmente, el robot también se implementó en el ambiente de seguridad ocupacional, de manera que se logró mantener en cero los accidentes por derrumbes.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

"Design of engineering controls to limit occupational noise exposure rely on accurate calculation inputs. Sound in mines can carry considerable distances. Mine ventilation engineers rely on noise propagation calculations to estimate silencer performance criteria for key mine fan installations that are often in proximity to occupied areas of a mine and can remain in service for decades. The blasted and rockbolted walls of hard rock mining tunnels have unique acoustical properties. Underground testing in an operating metal mine in Sudbury, Canada was performed and results processed to characterize noise propagation in mines, with the goal of improving the accuracy of noise calculations.INTRODUCTIONAs mine operators continue to improve and promote workplace safety, addressing noise at fixed infrastructure locations is observed as increasingly common. Underground fans are important to consider in this context, as they are typically loud, in proximity to occupied and sensitive workplaces, and operate nearly continuously. Predicting noise propagation from ventilation fans within underground mines has long been a challenge, with few available resources documenting acoustical properties as calculation inputs. Other factors in addition to rock face absorption properties include tunnel geometry and distance from the fan, which play critical roles in characterizing the noise level at any given point away from the fan. By understanding and establishing methods to better predict noise dissipation along underground mining tunnels, engineers can design noise controls with a greater degree of precision and confidence to effectively protect workers from over exposure to noise.This paper investigates classical methods of predicting reverberant room and direct field noise propagation. These prediction methods are then compared to noise measurements taken within the Fraser Mine of Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO) Measurements were taken at a depth of ~881 m (2,889 ft), along an ~300 m (984 ft) long blasted hard rock mining tunnel. The noise along the mine tunnel resulted from the intakes of two 900 kW (1,200 hp) ventilation fans with a combined exhaust capacity of 300 m3/s (630,000 cfm)."

"This paper presents a series of case studies where spherical camera photographs were used to generate 3D shaft models using photogrammetric methods. The shaft models were, checked for accuracy by comparing them to overlapping laser scan data, provided survey data or idealized shaft models. Short lengths of model were found to more accurately reproduce the shaft surface, with a best observed accuracy of 8 mm. Longer models encountered errors with accumulated errors as exhibited by slight deviations from vertical or slightly conical model shape. At present, the models are considered acceptable for general documentation and gross change detection. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections are required by mining regulations in many jurisdictions and are commonly completed by trained mine personnel via visual inspections. This can be time consuming and prone to errors due to lapses in attention and the rapid travel rate required to inspect an entire shaft in a reasonable amount of time. Similarly, because of the time requirements, there can be impacts on other aspects of mining as a result of occupying the shaft for inspections. Spherical cameras with supplemental light systems offer a modern addition or alternative to conventional inspections. These cameras can be lowered relatively quickly to collect high definition, fully illuminated videos of the shaft that can be reviewed in detail later while the shaft returns to service (Gillis et.al., 2019). The use of cameras offers a further opportunity for valuable survey data generation from the same original data stream. The video data can be processed into three-dimensional (3D) models using Structure-from-Motion (Westoby et al., 2012) based photogrammetric methods. Depending on the quality of the source video and availability of survey control (required for all photogrammetry models) these models can be very accurate. Shaft surveying can be conducted with traditional theodolite methods but such surveys are time consuming and limited in their data density. Similarly, scans can be completed using conventional terrestrial laser scanners, but this requires a significant number of distinct setups to provide sufficient overlap between scans. Work is being conducted both on the laser scanning (SLAM, Durrant-Whyte & Bailey, 2006) and photogrammetry fronts towards kinetic scanning (Benecke, 2017) systems. The major advancement which is permitting these kinetic systems is Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) which can provide localization in GPS denied environments and reduce errors associated with the open traverse format associated with shaft scanning."

"The Jansen shafts are completed using purely mechanical excavation. This paper summarises the geology, a description of the shafts, the method used for excavation and the results achieved along with the challenges encountered and the solutions developed during the project. This experience is now being applied in the next generation machines and shaft sinking processes. This pioneering approach is changing shaft sinking in soft and medium to hard rock. INTRODUCTION The Jansen Mining project located approximately 150 km east of the city Saskatoon is the location of the BHP owned potash mine with an expected mining output of eight million tonnes annually upon completion. Mining contractors DMC Mining Services have used two Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheaders (SBRs) to excavate the two blind shafts with an approximate excavation diameter of ten metres (inner diameter approximately 8.3 m) to depths of -975 and -1005 metres, respectively. The SBRs excavate the rock by a partial-face cutting method, using a transverse cutting drum mounted on a telescopic boom. The excavated rock is then conveyed away from the bench by an innovative pneumatic system and transferred into muck buckets to be hoisted to the surface. No drilling and blasting was done to keep to the BHP philosophy of using only mechanical excavation for this reference project. BHP VISION – MECHANICAL EXCAVATION BHP focused on mechanical excavation at Jansen due to the following perceived benefits: 1.No workers in the excavation chamber (shaft bottom), minimizing the exposure to traditional shaftsinking hazards associated with working in the shaft bottom. 2. Minimal damage to the rock fabric reducing the need for ground support and avoiding potential impact damage to freeze tubes located around the shaft. 3. Accurate excavation diameters with no overbreak, reducing volumes of rock to be removed and replaced with concrete lining."

In August 2018, the first full-scale HydroFloatTM cells for the recovery of coarse composited copper and gold were commissioned at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley operation in New South Wales, Australia. The primary objective of the installation is to recover coarse value-bearing composites that are lost to conventional flotation tailings, without the need for additional power input for particle size reduction to improve mineral liberation. This paper examines the application of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology for the recovery of coarse, poorly liberated copper sulphide particles drawing on recent experience from lab scale testwork through circuit design and commissioning of the full-scale installation at Cadia Valley. INTRODUCTION In the face of declining copper head grades and a tightening regulatory environment around the use of wet tailings dams, the processing of copper ores at coarser particle sizes has become a focal point for the industry. Sulphide flotation using the Eriez HydroFloatTM is one of the emergent technologies that sits under this umbrella of coarse pre-concentration. It has been demonstrated through numerous lab and pilot scale testwork programs carried out by Newcrest and others (Awatey, Kohmuench, Thanasekaran, Skinner & Zanin, 2013), to improve the flotation recovery of sulphide-rock composite particles with low surface liberation, relative to conventional flotation technology. The HydroFloatTM technology has been used widely for the recovery of coarse potash, phosphate, coal, vermiculite, spodumene and diamonds but has never been applied at full scale in either gold or sulphide flotation. In August 2018, the first full-scale 3.4 m diameter HydroFloatTM cells for the recovery of coarse composite copper and gold were commissioned at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley operation in New South Wales. The primary objective of the installation is to recover coarse value-bearing composite particles that are lost to conventional flotation tailings, without the need for additional upfront power input for particle size reduction to improve mineral liberation.

A blast vibration model has been developed that simulates effects of almost all blast design parameters on the blast vibration peak particle velocity (PPV) from a production blast with multiple blastholes at a given point of interest in the rock. The velocity of detonation (VoD), initiation points, explosive types (density, VoD, energy), charge decoupling, and decking in each blasthole are simulated along with other blast design parameters. The information from signature hole blast vibration and the blast design are the input to the model. The model can be used to assess blast damage in proximity of blastholes as well as far field vibration PPV.

Blasting is the most commonly used excavation technique in mining and civil engineering applications. Blasting induces strong ground motions and fracturing of rock mass in rock excavations. Particularly, high ground motions may also induce some instability problems of rock mass and structures nearby. Furthermore, it may cause some environmental problems due to noise as well as vibrations of structures near the populated areas. Furthermore, flyrocks is another major issue for the safety of people and damage to machinery and equipments when blasting is employed. In this study, the authors explore the ways how to estimate the ground motions as a function of distance, amount of explosive, number of holes. The ground motions were measured by stand-alone accelerometers developed by the first author and some empirical relations are developed. The effect of ground motions on the instability issues of benches such as sliding, toppling and rockfalls were investigated. Furthermore, the flyrock issue is investigated and some empirical relations to estimate the maximum distance of flyrocks from the blasting relations are compared and discussed. Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da variação da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico na eletrodeposição da liga Ni-Mo-P utilizando citrato de sódio como agente complexante em função do comportamento anticorrosivo da mesma, da composição química e morfologia dos revestimentos. A caracterização das camadas foi feita por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX). Os ensaios de corrosão foram realizados à temperatura ambiente em NaCl 0,1 M por polarização potenciodiâmica linear (PPL). Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado um planejamento fatorial completo 23 associado a metodologia da superfície de resposta (MSR). As propriedades de corrosão e composição química dos revestimentos de Ni-Mo-P obtidos mostraram ser dependentes da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico. A ausência de trincas foi verificada para revesimentos com baixo conteúdo de molibdênio e mostrou ser necessário para obtenção de eletrodepósitos com boas propriedades de resistência à corrosão. Os resultados revelaram que o revestimento que apresentou melhor resistência à corrosão foi obtido em densidade de corrente 100 mA cm-2, temperatura de 40°C e pH 9,0 com composição de 87 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% Mo e 7 wt.% P e sua superfice exibiu morfologia nodular.

Os tubos de Plástico Reforçado com Fibras de Vidro, também conhecidos como tubos de PRFV são pouco utilizados em obras de infraestrutura no Brasil, principalmente por desconhecimento técnico da sua vida estrutural. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a expectativa mínima de 50 (cinquenta) anos de utilização dos tubos de PRFV. A metodologia adotada consiste na realização de ensaios mecânicos de longa duração em corpos de prova de tubos de PRFV por mais de 10.000 horas (1,4 anos), conforme rigor da norma ASTM D 2992 – Procedimento B. Este ensaio é comumente conhecido como ensaio de HDB (Hydrostatic Design Basis). Os resultados mostraram que a metodologia utilizada é adequada para verificar e certificar a vida estrutural dos tubos de PRFV, bem como evidenciou que o valor de HDB encontrado é satisfatório e compatível, quando comparado aos outros ensaios de HDB realizados no mundo em tubos de PRFV fabricados pelo mesmo processo produtivo de enrolamento contínuo.

Este trabalho contém as premissas e as ações tomadas para o desenvolvimento do processo, desde o vazamento até o processo de lingotamento, sempre com foco na qualidade da placa lingotada. Finalmente, serão mostrados os resultados de desempenho das placas, submetidas às premissas e condições de desenvolvimento, nos laminadores dos clientes.

Este trabalho discute o desenvolvimento de massas de tamponamento de furos de corrida de fornos de redução: altos-fornos, fornos de ferros-ligas, cubilôs, entre outros, a partir de resíduos de chamote, materiais refratários, alumina e piche de alcatrão, subproduto da coqueria, utilizado como aglomerante. Foram investigadas as condições de plasticidade, resistência, usinabilidade, moldabilidade e poder de adesão. Os resultados obtidos mostram a possibilidade de emprego industrial destas massas de tamponamento.

First, this works carries an experimental evaluation for austempered ductile iron (ADI) as a gear material. And second, in order to provide a better understanding of the microstructural effect on the stress state of subsurface regions, a finite element method approach was considered using the submodeling tool in ANSYS 11.0. For this, ADI gears were produced from continuous cast iron bars, heat and thermochemical treated and tested in FZG test rig. The results were compared to those of carburized steel AISI 8620 and induction hardened steel AISI 4140 gears. The wear experiments were performed at the temperature of 90ºC with two torque stages: 135 N.m (running-in) and 302 N.m (steady-state). The time for pitting and spalling on the gears surfaces were measured using image analysis. The results showed a very good potential of using ADI for manufacturing gears, replacing induction hardened steels. Also, the ADI gear with smaller nodules showed higher life for pitting. In contact fatigue tests with severe load, the carburized AISI 8620 steel proved more adequate than the austempered ductile iron, showing that the mechanical properties are critical in the resistance to damage in gear contact. The austempered ductile iron with smaller nodule size showed to be very competitive with wear resistance similar to AISI 4140 steel induction hardened. With ANSYS, it was verified that the nodule size affects the gears life independently of the mechanical properties of the matrix. The results showed that the nodules indicate the presence of a concentration stress, but their size doesn’t affect the contact fatigue life as much as the total amount of nodules, regardless of the ductile iron microstructure. The size and number of nodules affects both the nucleation and the propagation stage of cracks. ADIs with higher amount of nodules have a greater wear resistance. Also, compared to the Hertz contact theory (isotropic material), the presence of graphite nodules indicates a non-isotropic material and made the maximum shear stress point moves toward the surface.

Objetivo: Apresentar o Balanço Energético Global da Usiminas em 2013 - Usinas de Ipatinga e Cubatão, com os principais indicadores de consumo das áreas produtoras. Além dos indicadores energéticos globais, o balanço apresenta os consumos físicos específicos de cada insumo nas diversas áreas, permitindo a análise de cada setor das Usinas, isoladamente. Metodologia: Foram elaborados gráficos com indicadores de consumo energético por um período de cinco anos, bem como a distribuição percentual nas áreas produtoras. Nestes gráficos, é evidenciada a evolução dos indicadores ao longo dos anos. É também apresentada justificativa para a variação do indicador em relação ao ano anterior. Resultados: O trabalho apresenta análise das Usinas de Ipatinga e Cubatão em relação à evolução do consumo energético e sua distribuição percentual nas áreas produtoras.
