With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

This computer program determines the price per ton of coal needed to obtain a profit of 12 percent discounted cash flow. From a predetermined equipment and manning list, the program calculates all costs and prints seven tables, Including the equipment and manning tables and the discount cash flow table. Forty-four of the input variables may be readily changed to study their effects upon the final price per ton of coal or upon individual cost items. The method is adaptable for any type of mining and with additions, for beneficiation processes. This program was written in Fortran IV for use on the IBM 11302 and with few modifications can be used on other computers.

The development of a metallurgical project is a business venture rather than a technical exercise, and its real objective is to obtain the maximum return on investment consistent with the limitations imposed by company policy and the requirements of society. Demand for profits is the driving force for technical advances and naturally leads to improvements in processes, equipment and plant designs. In the mineral dressing field there have been virtually no new processes developed since the introduction of flotation, and the steady erosion of profits by inflation has been offset only by increasing equipment size. Unfortunately, in recent years, plant designers have not always utilized the largest equipment or the opportunities for functional and economic design presented by the development of larger equipment. Lower cost plants can be developed providing that unrealistic restraints arising from the prejudice of past practices are avoided. As an illustration of this premise, three different approaches were taken toward the design of a clearly delineated but hypothetical copper concentrator of 20, 000 tons per day capacity. While the same flowsheet was used in each case, designs were produced for a conventional plant, an alternate using the largest available equipment, and a third scheme utilizing large equipment and the most functional design which could be developed, including features derived from many plants in many different industries. Capital costs were developed for the three separate designs based on a location in the southwestern United States. Ancillary facilities were identical in each case and included a mine truck shop, a maintenance shop, a general office, and a nominal starter dam for tailings disposal within 5000 feet of the plant. Water supply within 1000 feet of the plant, and power furnished to the property boundary has been assumed in each case. The flowsheet of the three plants is shown in Figure 1 and represents the treatment of a typical sulfide copper ore by three- stage crushing followed by single-stage ball milling. Concentration is by flotation roughing and scavenging followed by regrinding of the concentrates and two stages of cleaning.

An evaluation is presented of the Bureau of Mines process for the recovery of metal and mineral values from municipal incinerator residues. This process employs standard mineral beneficiation techniques and is operating on a pilot-plant scale of 1,000 pounds of incinerator residue feed per hour. Products from this separation process include ferrous, aluminum, and copper-zinc scrap, and colorless and colored glass. Cost estimates were prepared for four plant sizes. The estimated capital and operating costs For the four plants follow: [ ] It is assumed that the separation plant is located adjacent to a municipal incinerator. Provision is made, however, for part of the residue feed to be delivered by truck so that one large separation plant can be used for residue from more than one incinerator.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties of zinc alloys containing 25 to 40 wt pet Al and 0 to 0.7 pet Mg. Microstructures, hardness, and tensile properties were evaluated for material as extruded at 285° C, solution treated at 300° to 400° C, and subsequently aged at 100° to 200° C. The alloys without magnesium are characterized by low hardness and strength with high tensile elongation and reduction in area. It was verified that magnesium effectively retards the Zn-Al eutectoid transformation below 275° C and markedly increases hardness and strength with decreases in ductility. Solution treating at 350° C results in large grain sizes and gross embrittlement. Subsequent aging of the Zn-Al-Mg alloys at 200° C restores ductility substantially and stabilizes the structures, but strengths are considerably reduced. Combined strength and ductility properties are better for the as-extruded condition than for any heat-treated condition. There is usually little advantage in overall tensile properties from increasing magnesium above 0.1 pct.

Presented in this volume are the basic mining techniques and production operations associated with underground bituminous coal mining. Chapter 2, "Multiflow Process Charts", presents, in sketch form, a description of the various operations characteristic of conventional and continuous mining. In order to focus attention upon the major components and operations in each work cycle, certain items are not shown in the sketches, e. g., machine electrical cables, brattice, and rib posts. The elapsed time shown for each sketch is considered representative for the various work elements summarized by the sketch. More detailed work element times can be found in Chapter 3, "Typical Work Cycle Times", and Chapter 4. "Standard Time Data".

Results of linear correlations of two to four variables by the least-squares method are presented. The variables include 63 parameters representing coal composition, coal plasticity, and coke strength. The composition parameters are on chemical analyses; the plasticity parameters, on three plastometer and dilatometer tests and four miscellaneous tests; and the coke-strength parameters, on three ASTM indices. Seventy-two to eighty-four plastic coals were used in the plasticity and carbonization tests, which together form the basis of this report; 43 nonplastic or weakly plastic coals were used in the coal-band studies. Plots of relations between volatile matter, carbon, and oxygen contents of 1,860 U.S. coals and the 84 coals used are shown. Similar plots between volatile matter and hydrogen or atomic H/C of the 84 coals are also included. Significances of regression coefficient signs for coal composition parameters in the significant correlations found are discussed. Based on these significances, the following relations are shown: (a) coke strength versus average aromaticity, or mineral matter content, of the parent coal; (b) characteristic temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers, the free-swelling index, or the Gray-King type versus average hydroaromaticity of the coal; and (c) nontemperature parameters of the plastometer and dilatometers versus the physical properties of a certain group of compounds from thermal decomposition of coal. Similarly, significances between the positions of coals in the coal band and the aforementioned relations are also discussed. A structural theory of coal plasticity is proposed. Applications of the correlation results are discussed. Composition parameters, such as carbon, atomic H/C, and calorific value may be used as a basis for selecting coking coals for stronger coke. Plasticity parameters, such as the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers and the free-swelling index, may be used for the same purpose. Based on the best correlations found, coke-strength indices may be estimated to within 4 to 8 units of the observed values; the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometer tests, 5° to 10° C.; and the free-swelling index, within 1 unit. Accuracies of all these estimated values are examined, based on the experimental errors of the data involved. Finally, estimations of plasticity parameters from one test with those from others are shown.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 2nd evaluates iron ore resources in California and Nevada and analyzes the California and Japanese iron ore markets in which these resources will be used. The competitive position of California-Nevada ores, in these markets, was estimated by comparing regional iron ore prices, production costs, and transportation costs with those of foreign suppliers. Resources were determined to be sufficient to produce the equivalent of 585 million tons of 64-percent iron pellets at a price of less than $15 per ton delivered at California ports. Much higher tonnage could be produced at higher prices. Iron ore requirement of the California iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 15.9 million tons by the year 2000. A study of the iron ore production potential of California-Nevada deposits and of out-of- State sources indicated that this ore requirement can be supplied most economically by California-Nevada ores. Iron ore import requirements of the Japanese iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 150.0 million tons by the year 2000. A study of price trends in this market indicated that very little California-Nevada iron ore will be sold in Japan after 1973 when existing sales contracts expire. Iron ore-exports might be economically possible if ore could be transported from California to Japan at ballast rates as backhaul on existing petroleum shipping.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. The exchange of heat from wall rock to ventilating air was studied in a cross-cut driven through fresh rock on the 4600 level of the Kelley Mine, Six- teen thermocouple probes, 10 inches long, twenty-three probes, 7 feet long, and five probes, 50 feet long, were emplaced in the walls soon after blasting and wall -rock temperatures were monitored intermittently over a two-year period to determine heat loss from the wall rock. Temperatures, humidity, and velocity measurements were made of the air at the same times to determine heat gain. An important but less well-defined variable was the heat transfer by water entering the crosscut from fractures and leaving in the ditch. The balance of heat in and heat out at each probe station is within an acceptable range. Theoretical and empirical models for heat flux into a cylindrical opening fit the data reasonably well, also.

The effects of adding varying amounts of type I portland cement to hydraulic backfill are described. Six different fill materials, each with three cement contents, were tested to determine which fill properties have the most significant effect on cemented strength. Two strength prediction equations, based on the physical and mineralogical properties of the fills, were formulated, and these accounted for 96 and 99 percent of the variability of the data. Results of both unconfined compression and triaxial tests of cemented fills are given, and the effects of moist curing and fill densification on the 7-day strength are discussed. Permeability test data are given, and the decreased permeability due to cement content and curing time is shown graphically. A discussion of the limited evaluation of other potential stabilization additives (expansive cement, fly ash, sodium silicate, gypsum, and asphalt) is included in an appendix.

The roll forming of oxide powders was studied in a Bureau of Mines investigation to find the conditions and parameters required to make satisfactory ceramic strip. High-quality porous or dense alumina, zirconia, and porcelain shapes were made by sintering strip roll-formed at room temperature from powders containing minor amounts of binder and water. Strips with thicknesses of 0.04 to 0.08 inch and bulk densities from 40 to 90 percent of theoretical densities were made. The parameters most important to formability were particle size, condition of the powders, and roll gap. Other factors affecting quality were speed and surface condition of the rolls, amount and type of binder, water content, and sintering conditions. Ceramic strip was formed at rates up to 78 feet/minute, which is 13 to 23 times faster than reported by previous investigators, and forming was done in a simple and inexpensive roll unit. Reshaping the strip was possible by cutting, grinding, shearing, and stamping. The following innovations were developed that allow roll processing not normally possible with ceramic powders: (1) Fine-sized powders were made into strip by preparing these as partially sintered granules; (2) thick strip was formed by pressure feeding powders into the rolls; (3) flexible strip was made using a rubber-base bonding agent; (4) corrugated strip was formed on shaped rolls; and (5) porcelain strip was densified and reduced in thickness by rerolling while hot.

As part of a continuing program of evaluating the Nation's crude-oil resource, this report presents information pertaining to resource, primary reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for 3,209 selected reservoirs contained in 24 oil-producing States, as of January 1, 1968. To that date the selected reservoirs had not been subjected to pressure-maintenance or secondary-recovery operations. These reservoirs also met the following parameters: (1) a minimum of five oil-producing wells on January 1, 1968, (2) a minimum of 50 acres areal extent, (3) a minimum of 50,000 bbl of oil ultimate primary recovery, and (4) the principal reservoir energy was other than active water encroachment. The selected 3,209 reservoirs produced 527 million bbl of oil in 1967, about 17 pct of U.S, total production. Primary oil reserve was 4,983 million stb; in addition, there was 6,043 million stb of potential water- flood oil reserve. Oil resource in the selected reservoirs was 59,547 million stb. A brief history and outlook of waterflooding are presented for each State. Depth and producing rate statistics and geologic distributions of production, resource, reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for the selected reservoirs are presented by States in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are description, history, and technique modifications of waterflooding, and a preliminary cost estimate of a closed-system water-injection project.

The double-porosity model of Warren and Root7 for examining pressure drawdown and buildup phenomena in naturally fractured reservoirs has been extended to intetpret interference test results. Both analytical and numerical solutions are presented. The practicality of some of the assumptions in the Warren-Root model was also investigated. The standard procedure for interpreting interference tests in naturally fractured reservoirs beretofore employed an equivalent homogeneous reservoir model. A comparison of our results with the equivalent homogeneous model indicates the latter is inadequate for early time responses. For late time responses, however, the simpler equivalent homogeneous model yields favorable results. Finally, the effects of well spacing and the magnitude of the interporosity flow parameter are briefly cited. INTRODUCTION Interference tests can be used to provide reservoir information not obtainable from conventional pressure drawdown and buildup tests. The technique involves measuring the response in one or more wells arising from a pressure perturbation introduced into another well. It has been. successfully applied to single-layer, homogeneous, unfractured, isotropic and anisotropic formations to arrive at values of well storage capacity and a measure of directional permeability.l The techniques of interference testing usually can be extended to heterogeneous systems, provided the permeability contrast between any existing rock layers is not excessive.9 In such cases, the practical interference effects in an observation well of an interconnecting heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using an equivalent homogeneous model. The calculated properties are then average values. Russell and Prats2 have demonstrated the utility of this approach for a single-phase, two-layer system. For naturally fractured reservoirs, some different approaches usually are necessary. The major departure from homogeneous or nearly homogeneous reservoir treatment is to characterize the fractured system as an entity having "double-porosity"; namely, we suppose the existence of both primary and secondary porosity, where the former is contained within a systematic array of identical rectangular matrix blocks and the latter is contained within an orthogonal system of continuous, uniform fractures (see Fig. 1). It is sufficient to assume that the permeability of the rock matrix is so small that movement of reservoir fluids to the producing wells is entirely through the fracture network. A practical method has been developed and field tested which provides an estimate of the bearing capacity of mine roof and floor. The relationship between penetration of the strata and imposed loads is determined by in situ tests. Information of this type is needed to determine the maximum allowable pressure that may be applied by self-advancing supports on roof and floor of a longwall face without causing a punching type of failure.

Costs of disposing of steel slag are estimated based on the present method and a proposed alternate method for a steel mill in the Pittsburgh area. Estimated cost data were calculated by the Bureau of Mines and do not reflect the investment and operating costs and credits of a specific steel mill and processing plant. The alternate method of steel slag disposal would result in an appreciable cost savings to the mill and concurrently supply the industrial and commercial markets with low-cost, high-quality construction materials.

Five possible sources of water for waterflooding of petroleum reservoirs in the arid San Joaquin Valley of California were considered. Three of them (water produced with petroleum, water from a shallow saline aquifer, and waste irrigation water) were analyzed chemically; laboratory information for one (sea water) had been developed during a previous study. A series of laboratory tests made on the fifth source (fresh water) determined the solubility of calcium sulfate dihydrate in water. Laboratory analyses included the following: Chemical analyses of water produced with petroleum and waste irrigation water; solubility of calcium sulfate dihydrate in water and brines; the effect of excess sulfate on the solubility of calcium sulfate in brines; the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria; and the permeability of cores from a petroleum reservoir to air, to water from other petroleum reservoirs, and to waste irrigation water. The results showed that most of the waters and mixtures of waters are compatible with petroleum reservoir waters and are generally suitable for injection. The calcium content of some of the formation waters is quite high, and care must be taken to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate dihydrate. The permeability of the few cores tested was about the same to water and brines as to air, indicating that formation damage due to clay swelling will not be serious. The waters most likely to be available for injection are water produced with petroleum, water from shallow saline aquifers, and waste irrigation water.
