The specific objective of this investigation was to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at -10° and -20° C and pressures to 1,000 psia. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the experiments were treated by the method of Barieau and Dalton. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for 10 binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results follow the same trend as data previously reported.

Domestic bismuth supply was projected from production figures for the ores in which it occurs--copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Published and unpublished data concerning host ores were examined to determine bismuth reserves and resources, and mine production. Potential recoverable bismuth occurring with reserves and resources of copper, lead, and zinc was estimated to be 36.3 million pounds. A bismuth availability diagram was developed from quantity estimates and ratios of production cost to value for these host ores. Additional recoverable bismuth occurring with domestic tungsten reserves was estimated to be 1.5 million pounds. Domestic byproduct production of bismuth will approximate 1.3 million pounds annually by 1980. This quantity will provide about 37 percent of the 3.5-million-pound estimated requirement for that year. Known world supply of bismuth appears to be sufficient for world demand to the end of this century. The study indicates that bismuth reserves and potential resources in the rest of the world have not been adequately reported.

Chromium resources in the United States are estimated at 1.8 million tons of recoverable chromium contained in 22.5 million tons of chromite-bearing material. Additional resource is presumed existent in large, but as yet undetermined, quantities of material containing less than 10 percent Cr203. No domestic resources are being mined presently (1969). Excluding transportation charges to domestic consuming areas, the total 1.8 million tons of chromim is estimated to be available, in ore or concentrate, at costs up to $0.64 per pound; 63 percent of the total is available under $0.11 per pound; and 38 percent under $0.08 per pound. It is judged that transportation from the resource areas to the existing market centers would add nearly $0.05 to the cost of a pound of chromium contained in ore or concentrate. Technically effective beneficiation methods have been developed for much of the known domestic resource, and further development might reduce costs of processing these materials. However, at present, domestic chromium resources are noncompetitive with foreign sources.

In ore mining technology, the loading and hauling operations are undoubtedly the area where the most spectacular progress has been made during the last twenty years. I shall draw some examples from the Eastern France iron ore mines which I how well and whose production of 62 million tons for 1962 and 1963 constitute a worthwhile experience worldwide. The iron ore deposits of Lorraine are of sedimentary origin. They contain many mineralized horizons with workable seams situated from 330 to 830 ft. in depth. The dip of these seams is generally less than six percent. Their thickness varies from 6 to 23 ft. All seams are not workable throughout the whole area of occurrence, but in some mines there are five mineable seams in the same vertical section, with from 5 to 20 ft. of barren ground intervening between them. The iron content of the mineral varies from 28 to 36 percent. Specific gravity of the ore is 156 lb. per cu. ft. m place and 100 lb. per cu. ft. blasted. Reserves of iron ore in the Lorraine region are estimated at six billion tons with an iron content of more than 28 percent. These mines operate by means of rooms and pillars process, with pillar robbing; the final recovery is very good and averages 90 percent. Some years back, competition from richer, imported ores incited these mines to make constant efforts to increase their productivity and reduce mining costs, thus placing them in a leading position in mining technology, as evidenced by the dramatic evolution of their output per manshift (Figure No. 1).

The southeastern phosphate industry is investigated to determine its role in supplying the United States and world phosphate demand. The report shows that the southeastern (Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina) phosphate industry is the leading domestic and world producer of phosphate rock, The report emphasizes size and organization, production capacity, transportation, and marketing of the southeastern phosphate product, Factors affecting the supply- demand relationship of the southeastern phosphate industry and world phosphate production-consumption relationships are analyzed and related to the southeastern phosphate industry. Past trends are projected and the future role of the southeastern phosphate industry is analyzed to determine its ability to supply the United States and rest-of-the-world phosphate requirements in 1985 and 2000. The projections show that southeastern resources are ample to supply domestic and export requirements at the projected rates of consumption well beyond the year 2000.

The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

SUMPEARY OF CURRENT PRACTICES History The outcrop and surrounding area of Comincots Sullivan Mine was originally mined by small open cuts on surface and small open stopes underground to which shafts and adits were driven for access. When it was established that a commercial grade of ore was available, an adit was driven on the 4600 level (feet above sea level), and OM was extracted by larger scale open stoping leaving supporting pillars where necessary. After the depth of the ore body was proven to the 3900 level and an adit driven at this level, many miles of drifts, crosscuts, raises and sublevels were driven for the extraction of the ore above this level. Larger open stopea were extended from this development. The mining method was, and to a very limited degree still is, a benching method. Due to the strong hanging wall in this area of the mine, stopes with a width of 100 feet or more were opened. In 1931, because the orebody was proven to extend below the 3900 level, a winze was sunk from the 3900 level to the 3350 level. From this winze three intermediate levels were opened. Following a plan of development well in advance of production requirements, further sinking was done by winzes and eventually a large shaft was raised to surface. Prior to 1958 the 2850 level was bottom which since that time has been extended to the 2500 level. Open stopes were developed and mined as this area was opened up.

A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

Although water will displace oil from a petroleum reservoir to a greater extent than gas will, there are some reservoirs in which gas rather than water should be used for pressure maintenance. This is indicated by the high-percentage oil recovery in the case history reports on the Pickton field1 in East Texas and the Raleigh field2 in Mississippi. In gas cycling, total oil recovery includes vaporized products from the immobile oil in addition to oil produced by displacement. If a large part of the immobile oil is vaporized, total oil recovery may be higher than that obtainable from pressure maintenance by water injection. However, the amount of immobile oil vaporized may range from almost 0 to 100 percent, and no simple and reliable method has been presented in the literature for calculating oil vaporization. Development of such a method was the purpose of this study. Several papers concerning the calculation of oil vaporization have been published,3 6 and each is based on the concept dealing with K values — equilibrium constants for the various components in reservoir oils. (K for a component in a system of vapor and liquid in equilibrium is the mole fraction in the vapor phase divided by the mole fraction in the liquid phase.) This appears to be the most logical approach. Yet, the problem is too great for a perfect solution, even with modem laboratories to analyze oils and high-speed digital computers to perform calculations; the number of components in reservoir oils is too large. Because of their complexity no two reservoir oils are exactly alike. Also, K values change not only with variations in pressure and temperature but also with composition of the reservoir oil. In addition, during gas cycling, the lighter hydrocarbons tend to vaporize first. Thus, the reservoir oil becomes more dense and less volatile as gas cycling continues. Furthermore, the greatest amount of oil vaporization occurs near the injection well. Therefore, a simplified method is required for calculating oil vaporization because a rigorous method is not practical. The present methods of calculating vaporization generally require knowledge of the reservoir oil composition in which the mole fractions of the lighter components through hexanes are given; the remaining oil is described as C, + (heptanes and others of greater molecular weights). Assigning one K value for the C,+ system provides the simplest solution, but this incorrectly assumes that K for C, + does not change as gas cycling continues. This assumption can cause large errors because the K value may become less than a thousandth of the original after a large amount of oil vaporization. Another way to solve the problem is to determine changing K values for C, + according to how much of the C, + has been vaporized. To determine these values a sample of the reservoir oil is injected into a pressure-volume cell, and dry gas is batched in and out of the cell. The petroleum literature contains many reports on the relative permeability properties of porous media. However, only recently have studies of relative permeability at elevated temperatures been made.1 -5 Each of these studies presents relative permeability data on water-oil systems in linear sandpacks or sandstone cores under isothermal conditions. The results of these investigations are dissimilar. Edmondsonl found that in Berea sandstone a temperature-dependent effect was present, while Shilobod,2 using the same material, found no temperature dependence after normalizing for initial water saturation. Workers at Texas A&M U.3-5 found that the ratio kw/ko was temperature dependent in an unconsolidated system. The differences in results of these studies are probably a consequence of differences in the material employed, in the experimental procedures followed, and in the properties of the porous systems used. This paper describes an experimental investigation of permeability ratio temperature dependence, conducted to clarify some of the results obtained by previous workers. Each experiment described in this paper involved the isothermal displacement of Chevron No. 15 white oil by either nitrogen, steam, or distilled water and displacement of water by nitrogen. All permeability ratios were calculated using the Welge procedure. Values of the water-oil permeability ratio were obtained over the temperature range 75OF to 540°F. Results indicate the ratio is temperature dependent at low water saturations, probably due to interfacial effects. However, as the saturation is increased, temperature dependence decreases until, above some minimum saturation, the ratio becomes insensitive to temperature. Previously published work indicates that the dependence reappears at very high water saturations, a region of the ratio curve not completely examined in the present study. It appears that water-oil permeability ratios are temperature dependent at the extremes of the ratio curve where changes in interfacial tension with temperature induce variations in residual saturations. Between the extremes, there is a region in which the permeability ratio is insensitive to temperature. The size and location of this region is probably a function of the characteristics of the porous system. Gas-oil permeability ratios calculated from nitrogen-white oil displacement experiments indicate a definite temperature dependence over the range 75OF to 500°F and over the entire gas saturation range studied. Evidence discussed in this report indicates that this dependence is a consequence of molecular slippage in the gas phase. This is an extension of the Klinkenberg effect6 to two-phase systems at high temperatures (the existence of slippage in two-phase systems at room temperature has been demonstrated7). Mine ore, reduced to minus 71/2 in. by primary crushers, is stockpiled. Size reduction of the reclaimed material by secondary and tertiary crushers is achieved in a closed circuit crushing and screening plant. Screen products of minus 30 mm plus 6 mm lump, and minus 6 mm fines are stockpiled by conveyor and stacker systems prior to rail despatch 10 port facilities at Dampier. Crusher settings, determined from experience, are closely maintained to obtain the desired lump/fines ratio. Chemical and sizing analyses from automatically taken samples are used to maintain product specifications. The beneficiation plant upgrades the fines product when this is necessary. The recorded wear life of individual plant components is the basis of a planned maintenance programme.

The purpose of this study was to develop methods for the financial evaluation of mineral deposits. This includes the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates. This was done by performing a financial evaluation through computer simulation using sensitivity and probabilistic risk analysis. The criterion used to measure the relative advantages of these investment and operating alternatives is the discounted-cash-flow rate of return. Included is a description of the theory and methods used in the probabilistic analysis approach, which is based on the premise that the expression of a range of values in establishing an estimate for a parameter is more realistic than the choice of a single value. Numerous simulations are made using randomly selected values of the input parameters resulting in a frequency distribution of the rates of return and their relative probability of occurrence. The sensitivity analysis method is described and combined with the probabilistic analysis to interrelate mineral reserves, capital investments, operating costs, and production rates. The ability to vary these input parameters on successive runs has permitted the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates for a given mineral deposit. For illustrative purposes the evaluation of a mineral deposit was performed using three alternative mining and processing methods at three different quantities of resources and various production rates and prices. The computer program used in this analysis was written in FORTRAN II for maximum compatability and should run without modification on most computers having BK (8,000-word) core memory, a card reader, and printer (120 characters per line).

In recent years, the crude oil reserves of the world have increased at the same rate as the consumption. A Consideration of the global figures suggests that adequate supplies of petroleum will be available during the next decades. On the other hand, it in a fast of economic and political significance that the reserves in the industrialized countries increase much more slowly than in the developing countries. In Western Europe the reserves have even decreased. At the present time, about 70 % of the petroleum reserves of the world are in the Middle East and in Africa in regions in which political arises are prevalent or impending. For the industrialized countries, the discrepancies between the consumption and reserves in various regions of the world are a strong urge to investigate whether oil can be recovered from other sources. The situation will probably not be changed to a large extent by the discovery of oil in the north of Alaska. The main starting materials for the production of synthetic crude oil are coal, oil shale and tar sand. In North America, where the consumption of petroleum increases more rapidly than the reserves, there are enormous deposits of each of the three materials. This fact is another incentive toward the utilization of these unconventional oil reserves, which provide a reliable basis for a supple of energy for a long time to come.

Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date; however, others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. Normally these fines consist of the higher oxides of iron and the hydrated oxides. Unfortunately, grinding these types of materials in a wet process produces a slurry that is difficult to filter to obtain the requisite moisture level for the subsequent balling and indurating operations. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore and to discuss the various design and operating parameters involved. Although dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades, its significant application to the iron ore industry has taken place within the past ten years. Even though the basic concept of dry grinding has been borrowed from the cement industry, the successful application to iron ore grinding has not taken place without some difficulties. Consequently, the application to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Activity has developed a computer program for use in the reduction of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. This program includes important modifications and extensions of some of the methods currently used for treating these types of data and yields statistical information that cannot be obtained from any other published work. The methods of calculation make use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Helium Research Center. Because of a need to investigate different functional forms for representing the compressibility factor isotherm, 2, the computer program has been written in such a way that the only additional coding required is the so-called compressibility function subroutine. This subroutine defines the analytical form of Z and certain of its partial derivatives. The program described herein is believed to be the most advantageous for use in treating isothermal Burnett compressibility data.

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.
