The purpose of this investigation was to find whether the moduli of elasticity obtained were the same for the following methods : ( 1 ) Deformation of a borehole in a prism subjected to uniaxial stress ; ( 2 ) deflection of a thin beam of uniform cross section uniformly loaded ; ( 3 ) sonic - pulse velocity measurements , and ( 4 ) strain measurements on a prism under uniaxial stress . The rock tested was chosen for its good elastic behavior and relatively good homogeneity and elastic isotropism . The same rock was used for all methods . Results indicate that for given environmental and stress conditions the moduli obtained by each of the four methods check one another within the limits of experimental error and that the differences introduced which are characteristic for each method are smaller than physical variations within the rock tested .

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . Oil- yield data are presented for 40 sets of core samples and 83 sets of drill cuttings collected in 1952-62 from drilling operations in the Uinta basin of eastern Utah . This accumulated information on the location , extent , and richness of oil shales of the Green River formation is used to appraise the deposits as a source of oil and related products . Core samples used in the study were obtained specifically for evaluating oil shale , and they were satisfactory for this purpose , except they did not completely penetrate the formation . The drill- cutting samples were inferior to the core samples and yielded more erratic results . Consequently, oil yields based on cuttings should be regarded as indicative , rather than definite , until substantiated by other means . In general , the oil- yield data indicate Green River oil shale in Uinta basin is not as thick or as uniform as that in the Piceance Creek basin of western Colorado . However , it is an important potential source of oil . Estimates that beds 15 feet or more thick that average 25 gallons of oil per ton represent at least 120 billion barrels of oil in place are supported by the recent oil- yield data .

Alumina can be recovered from clay , using 30 percent nitric acid for digestion . Calcined clay is crushed and then digested at 325 ° F and 85 psig pressure with less than stoichiometric nitric acid required to form normal aluminum nitrate . In this way , a solution containing both normal aluminum nitrate , Al ( NO3 ) 3 , and basic aluminum nitrate , assumed to be Al ( OH ) ( NO3 ) 2 , is formed , and in which iron is virtually insoluble . The solution is filtered and then concentrated in vacuum evaporators to crystallize normal aluminum nonahydrate . The crystals are washed with 50 percent nitric acid and then decomposed to alumina and nitrogen oxides . The design that has been developed for this process is based on published work . For a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day , the estimated operating cost is $60.69 per ton of alumina , and the estimated fixed capital cost is $ 76 million using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite via the Bayer process . For lowering costs , future research should include study of leaching at lower temperatures under atmospheric pressure and alternate aluminum nitrate decomposition methods .

Design plans and detailed cost estimates of mining and treating ore from Maggie Canyon deposit by two alternative methods which can be used in the event of a sudden need to exploit this resource are given . Lower costs are estimated for the operation employing oil - emulsion flotation . The total capital investment required for this operation is estimated at $ 11,750,000 . Assuming an 85 percent recovery in mining , 55.6 pct of the manganese in the ore reserve would report in 153,333 tons of ferromanganese containing 75 pct manganese . The production cost for the 5 - year operation would be about $ 245 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be approximately $ 7.5 million , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 11.9 , milling 24.4 , sintering 9.9 , smelting 47.2 , hauling ore and sinter 2.8 , and general offices 3.8 . Recovery and costs are both higher for the operation employing dithionate leaching . In this operation the required investment is about $ 17,220,000 . Manganese recovery would be 67.6 pct in 186,160 tons of ferromanganese . Production cost would be about $ 284 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be about $ 10,575,000 , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 8.4 , milling 44.4 , sintering 7.4 , smelting 34.7 , hauling ore and sinter 1.3 , and general offices 3.8 . Potential process modifications might reduce the operating cost of the first operation by as much as 7 pct and that of the second operation by as much as 9.5 pct , but exploitation of the deposit by the techniques studied is not economical today .

A new system for precisely counterbalancing and measuring vapor pressure operates by servomechanical principles . It was developed with the objective of determining the vapor - pressure equations of metal halides . The system is isolated from the vapor - pressure bulb by a diaphragm transducer that signals a pressure regulator to null any pressure difference that is detected . Pressure measurement and readout are continuously performed by a servomanometer , accurate to ±0.003 cm Hg for the range of 0.1 to 200 cm Hg . High response rate and sensitivity are obtained . Methods of use are described , and results for CdC1 and PbC1 , in agreement with data of other investigators , are given as examples .

Laboratory data obtained from a Bureau of Mines rotary air core of a well near Sugar Grove , Warren County , Pa . , were instrumental in initiating hydraulic fracturing in the area to stimulate oil recovery from Glade sand oil reservoirs . This report outlines the general geology , lease development , reservoir- rock characteristics , and oil - production history of Glade and Clarendon sand reservoirs in Warren County . The methods of well completion for single- stage and multiple- stage hydraulic fracturing of old and new wells are discussed , and a range of hydraulic fracture treatment data from 29 Glade sand and 10 Clarendon sand wells is presented . A composite decline curve representing oil - production data from six wells shows probable results of hydraulic fracturing . Average cumulative oil production during the first 100 days after hydraulic fracturing with a sand - carrying liquid is compared with production after conventional shooting with liquid nitroglycerin .

Data obtained in the Bureau's study of dust explosions of 313 elemental metals , alloys , catalysts , and ores comprising 54 types of material are summarized . Information is given on ignition temperature , spark energy for ignition , minimum explosion concentration , explosion pressure , rate of pressure rise , and in some instances , the admixed inert dust and oxygen concentration in an atmosphere required to prevent ignition of dust dispersions . The effects of particle diameter on explosibility and pyrophoricity are also discussed .

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

To increase safety and productivity in mining , the potential uses and hazards of rigid foam were investigated by the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine . This research resulted in the development of chemical formulations , spraying equipment , and application procedures that permit safe and effective use of urethane foams for improving mine ventilation , for reducing weathering of mine rock and steel , for constructing seals in fire areas , and for thermal insulation .

Studies on continuous - circuit leach - aluminum precipitation and leachelectrodeposition of mercury were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions and cost estimates for recovering mercury from mercury sulfide flotation concentrates . With 150 grams of sodium sulfide and 50 grams of sodium hydroxide per liter , from 98 to 99.8 percent of the mercury was extracted from flotation concentrates , with about 0.5 pound of sodium hydroxide used per pound of mercury produced . Precipitation of mercury from the caustic - sulfide solution with minus 8 - mesh aluminum shot required about 0.2 pound of aluminum per pound of mercury produced at a cost of $ 0.05 per pound of mercury . Electrodeposition cost with 7 mill power , based on 50 percent current efficiency , was below 2 mills per pound of metal deposited . Feed solutions ranged from 10 to 130 grams of mercury per liter , and current densities , from 2 to 70 amperes per square foot . The cost of open- pit mining 250 tons per day was estimated at $ 1.75 per ton , and flotation - leachingelectrodeposition of the ore , at $ 3.54 , resulting in a cutoff grade of about 0.1 percent mercury . The cost of underground mining 50 tons per day was estimated at $ 20.00 per ton , and the cost of milling the ore was estimated at $ 13.33 , which resulted in a cutoff grade of 0.6 percent mercury .

Oils from coal hydrogenation have been examined at the Bureau of Mines to learn whether any centers of the optical activity reported in coal would survive catalytic hydrogenation at 450-525 ° C and about 8,000 psig pressure , and , if so , to obtain information about the nature of the active products . Oils from carbonization tars also were examined . Optical activity was found in the majority of the distillate fractions of the hydrogenation oils and in almost all distillates from the carbonization tars . No activity was observed in the tar - acid and tar - base fractions examined . Methods for isolating optically active concentrates included distillation through a packed column , liquid chromatography on silica gel , and adduction with urea . For the materials so processed , the optical activity segregated mainly in the paraffin - naphthenic and the hydroaromatic fractions . Although the specific compounds responsible for the optical activity were not isolated , experimental and spectrometric findings indicate that alkylsubstituted cycloalkane , cycloalkene , and hydroaromatic structures are most likely responsible for the optical activity of the concentrates . The optically active centers probably derived mainly from the steroids and terpenes in the biological materials that participated in the formation of coal .

Plastometric tests were made to determine the maximum thickness of the plastic layer for different U.S. coals . The effect of test variables on the maximum thickness of the plastic layer was studied . The values for the maximum thickness of the plastic layer were found to be related to the Gieseler maximum fluidity , plastic temperature range , free swelling index , and other plastic properties of coals . Only a general relationship was observed between the plastometric parameters obtained in these tests and the coking properties of coal .

Por ello, es el método más adecuado en los lugares donde no se dispone de coke, tal es el caso de Chimbote - Perú y en donde se dispone de energía eléctrica barata, y de carbones que requieren procesos caros para su coquificación.

"El presente texto señala el proceso de explotación de la veta Shiusha situada en el distrito de las minas de Huarón. La veta es de origen hidrotermal, cuyo rumbo aproximado es E-W, y su buzamiento varía de 75º N en el Estea 85º N al Oeste, uniformizándose en los niveles inferiores en 85º :N. In 1962, minerals beneficiation showed definite signs of coming out of the doldrums into which it has drifted after the uranium boom. Demand by steelmakers for high-grade iron pellets has created the need for concentrating plants to upgrade specular hematite by spiral concentration or flotation and magnetites by magnetic means and flotation. According to a paper given at the AMC annual meeting by C. S. Arms of Pickands Mather, "the shipment of pellets, started in the mid-1950's, has increased to 17.6 million tons in 1961 from North American operations. Many plants already underway will raise this production to about 42 million tons by 1965. This will be a very sizeable percentage of the total iron ore production contemplated by that date." Iron ore concentration methods are gradually raising the assay of pellets into the 65 to 69% Fe range and lowering silica to the 4 to 7% range. Quebec Cartier's Lac Jeannine concentrator went into operation in late 1961 and all grinding units were running by 1962. The Iron Ore Co. of Canada's new Carol Lake plant was started in mid-1962.

Published X-ray mass absorption coefficients were compiled and tabulated. These coefficients are required for various X-ray analytical techniques. Values obtained from 28 authors are listed for 87 elements with both experimental and calculated points included; the wavelengths range from ~0.01 to 68 A. Representative graphs are presented for six elements (lithium, nitrogen, iron, silver, holmium, and uranium. A 37-item supplementary bibliography is also included.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.
