The paper describes the search for mineral deposits in an area of 4,500 sq. miles of south-west Tasmania. The area is one of difficult access and the problem of speedy movement and maintenance of field parties was solved by the use of helicopters. The programme has followed a systematic pattern of the aerial photography of the exploration area with the preparation of photQmosaics and topographical base sheets from these mosaics. Geological maps were initially prepared by photogeological interpretation and making use where possible of pre-existing information. The maps produced were later checked by ground traverses. Geophysical maps were obtained by the use of airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric methods. Geophysical and geological anomalies were checked on the ground by a campaign using ground geophysical equipment in the former case and geological and geochemical work in both instances. Audio Frequency Magnetic and Induced Polarization techniques were used in an area which was covered by several hundred feet of Tertiary sediments.The campaign has reached the stage of the drilling of specific targets.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the activities of Lyell-E.Z. Explorations (L.E.E.), an organization which was formed in 1956 by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co. Ltd. and the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. to explore for mineral deposits in an area of approximately 4,500 sq. miles in southwest and southern Tasmania. To provide the necessary personnel and equipment for this project the exploration resources of both Companies were pooled and augmented and a headquarters was established in Queenstown. The work was directed by a Committee of four made up of officials from both Companies; a review of this structure has recently been presented by Hall (1959).

The effectiveness of 0.01 pct. molybdenum, as ammonium molybdate impregnated on coal, on the hydrogenation of a high-volatile bituminous C coal at 8,000 p.s.i.g. and 460° to 480° C. has been studied in a pilot plant by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Under these conditions, the Bureau obtained 98 to 99 pct. conversion5/ of coal to liquids and gases at throughputs of 29 to 101 lb. of m.a.f. coal per cubic foot of reaction space per hour. At 460° C. the indicated yield of oil ranged from 63 pct. (based on m.a.f. coal) at a throughput of 35 lb./c.f.h. (pounds per cubic foot per hour) to 68.5 pct. at a throughput of 58 lb./c.f.h., and the yield of gaseous hydro-carbons ranged from 25.5 to 19 pct. at the same throughputs. The maximum measured yield of oil boiling under 325° C. was 47 pct.

Monazite placers in a region of the Carolinas ex- in 1951-1954 by the USGS are estimated to contain at least 53,000 short tons of thorium and 4600 short tons of uranium. None of these deposits is being mined. The 5200-sq mile area investigated extends northeast along the western Piedmont from the Savannah River in South Carolina to the Catawba River in North Carolina. Much of the region is 700 to 1100 ft above sea level. Gentle hills and broad interfluves give a local relief of 100 to 200 ft. This increases to 1700 ft at the west margin of the area where the east flank of the Blue Ridge is approached in South Carolina and the South Mts. are entered in North Carolina. This report is restricted to placers in the Piedmont. Monazite deposits in the Blue Ridge and coastal plain were not covered by the investigation. Monazite Mining in the Carolina Piedmont: Discovered in 1879 by W. E. Hidden,' the monazite placers in the Carolina Piedmont were first mined in 1886. The area was a major world source for thorium and the lanthanides until 1895, when Brazilian monazite entered the trade. Total output from the Carolina Piedmont has been nearly 5500 tons of monazite,2 but the placers have been idle since 1911, except for 48 tons produced between 1915 and 1917. Monazite mining was revived in the Carolinas in 1954 when a dredge operated by the Heavy Minerals CO. opened a fluviatile placer along Horse Creek in the coastal plain near Aiken, S. C. Geology and Mineralogy: Two recent papers",' have described the geology of the monazite placer district in the Piedmont between the Savannah and Catawba rivers; the general geology of the region has been reviewed by P. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. THERMODYNAMIC data for manganese and its inorganic compounds have not been critically surveyed since the work of Maier (31) 3 in 1934. At that time data were lacking or inadequate for many of the important metallurgical compounds. Experimental work, conducted during the intervening years, has supplied so many new thermodynamic values that it is again desirable to examine the available data and compile them into a single publication for handy reference. This paper consists of three main sections. The first summarizes the basic metallurgical thermodynamic data for manganese and its compounds, including heat capacities, entropies, heat contents, temperatures and heats of phase changes, vapor pressures, and heats and free energies of formation. All data available to May 1959 have been considered. The second section contains heats, free energies, equilibrium pressures, and equilibrium constants of reactions of manganese compounds, with special emphasis on metallurgical reactions. The third section supplies basic thermodynamic data for other elements and compounds encountered in metallurgical reactions of manganese, thus making it possible for the reader to conduct thermodynamic calculations without recourse to other literature.

This information circular describes mining methods and practices at New Cornelia Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Ajo, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The New Cornelia mine (fig. 1) is at Ajo, a town in southwestern Arizona (fig. 2) on Arizona State Highway 85 in the western part of Pima County. The [oncentrator] and smelter are near the mine (fig. 3). Copper ore is mined, crushed, ground, and concentrated, and the concentrates are smelted. Copper is cast in anode form and sent to the Phelps Dodge Corp. refinery in El Paso, Tex.

The Federal Bureau of Mines made pilot plant investigations of the process requirements necessary to produce heavy fuel oil by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of bituminous coal. The investigation was carried out in three separate series of experiments. The first series studied the effect of temperature and contact time on product distribution at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 420° to 480° C. in the presence of 0.1 wt.-pct../ stannous sulfide plus 0.05 wt.-pct. iodoform based on gross coal. As a result of increased contact times and temperatures, the conversion-6/ and yield of hydrocarbon gas increased, the viscosity of product oil decreased, and elimination of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur from coal increased. The yield of oil did not indicate any definite trend with changes in temperature and contact time. The yield of oil ranged from 76 to 85 pct. for Pittsburgh coal and from 60 to 85 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Asphaltenes in the product oil ranged from 17 to 38 pct. of the total oil for Pittsburgh coal and from 12 to 22 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Fuel oils meeting Bunker C or American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) Grade 6 specifications were produced with Rock Springs coal at 0.2- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 440° to 480° C. and with Pittsburgh coal at 0.3- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 420° to 460° C. In the second series of experiments tin, nickel, iron, and zinc were evaluated as catalysts for the hydrogenation of Rock Springs coal to heavy fuel oil at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 460° C. Using the apparent conversion of coal as criterion of catalyst activity, at a contact time of 0.45 hr. tin was the most effective catalyst; nickel and iron were nearly as effective, but the use of zinc resulted in much lower conversion. When the contact time was increased to 0.80 hr., the apparent conversion of coal was essentially the same for each of the catalysts. When the yield of oil boiling below 3550 C. was used as criterion of catalyst activity, at 0.45 hr. the order of activity was tin, iron, nickel, and zinc; at 0.80 hr. tin was far superior and the others were essentially equal. The product oils contained from 8 to 20 pct. asphaltenes.

The Federal Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a pressure-gasification pilot plant for producing synthesis gas directly from pulverized coal, oxygen, and steam. A pressure-gasification pilot plant has been constructed, and an investigation was made with the following basic objectives: 1. Determining the effect of varying pressure (75, 100, 150, and 300 p.s.i.g.), coal rate (400, 700, and 1,000 pounds per hour), and oxygen-to-coal ratio (8 to 11 std, c,f. per pound), on percentage of carbon gasified, oxygen and coal requirements per unit of CO + H2 produced, exit-gas temperature, and heat loss. The steam-to-coal ratio was maintained at approximately 0.3 pound per pound. 2. Development of a stabilized gasification zone or reaction space. 3. Improvement in operability of the pilot plant.

(D) Selected injury data: Tables 21-30: Current data on various selected factors of operating conditions at different kinds of quarries, including employment size-groups, length of shifts, comparative severity of injuries, and injury data and related employment experience at dimension-stone and nondimension-stone quarries and at underground quarries. (E) Historical injury experience: Table 31: Injury and employment data on the quarrying industry for 1911 through 1957. Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. The gas-combustion retort developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Rifle Oil Shale Project near Rifle, Colo., is a continuous, gravity-feed retort. The heat required to convert the kerogen in the oil shale to liquid oil is generated by the combustion of product gas and carbonaceous residue remaining on the retorted shale after the kerogen has been converted to oil, gas, and residue. A study of the effects of the process variables on retort operation, product yields, and product properties is important to the successful solution of the problems encountered in the development of a satisfactory process. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and analyze the effects of the rate of shale throughput, the composition of dilution gas, the height of the shale bed above the air entry, air-gas distributor design, shale size range, and the ratios of the flow rates of the various gas streams entering the retort to the rate of shale throughput.

The predominant tonnage use of titanium is as a white pigment, in the form of rutile or anatase, which are allotropic modifications of titanium dioxide. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide is unequaled as a white pigment for paints, paper, rubber, and a wide variety of other materials. Consumption of titanium dioxide pigments for these uses has been rising steadily for many years, United States consumption in 1956 amounting to about 486,000 tons, worth $250,000,000. Production was off a little in 1957 and 1958. An outstanding development in the titanium field in recent years is the expansion of titanium metal production. Virtually nonexistent before 1948, United States production of pure titanium metal sponge reached a high in 1957 of about 17,200 tons, worth about $77,000,000. United States titanium sponge metal production in 1958 was cut back to about 4,600 tons because of reductions in military requirements. Another major use of titanium, in the form of the mineral, rutile, is for welding rod coatings. United States consumption of rutile for this purpose in 1958 amounted to about 11,000 tons, worth $1,100,000. Titanium-Bearing Minerals Although several minerals contain titanium as a major constituent, only a few of these occur in sufficient quantities and concentrations to be of commercial importance. These are ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2), and alteration products of ilmenite which have been referred to as weathered ilmenite, leucoxene, or arizonite. The other polymorphs of titanium dioxide, brookite and anatase, occur in a few deposits, of which only one has been of even minor importance. Considerable concentrations of titanite or sphene (CaTiSiO5) and perovskite (CaTiO3) are known, but do not compete with ilmenite and rutile deposits in grade or size. Rutile is very widely distributed as an accessory mineral in most rocks, but large deposits of commercial importance are rare. A few rock deposits have been worked for rutile but only one, in Virginia, is in operation (1959). Development of one in Mexico was discontinued recently. At present, the main sources of rutile are the beach and dune sands of Australia and Florida. A major use of rutile is for the manufacture of titanium tetrachloride, which is the intermediate compound universally used in titanium metal manufacture. Another main use of rutile is for welding rod coatings. Although the whiteness and brightness of titanium dioxide pigment is due to the high refractive index of rutile or anatase, natural rutile is too impure to be used directly as a white pigment, is too expensive to use for manufacturing pure oxide pigment, and is too scarce to provide the required tonnages. Instead, the cheaper, more abundant, mixed oxide of iron and titanium, ilmenite, which is readily decomposed by sulfuric acid, is used for manufacture of rutile and anatase pigments. Ilmenite is mined from both rock and sand deposits. Rock deposits contain ilmenite in massive or heavily disseminated form along with magnetite or hematite and are almost invariably associated with anorthositic and gabbroic rocks. AN ADEQUATE, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials is indispensable to tile the United States and its industries in meeting the needs of an expanding Population, a rising standard of living, and the national security. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country's mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation's devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

La presente investigación señala la relación entre el factor tiempo-concentración y la silicosis, a partir de los resultados obtenidos por la sección Ingeniería en su estudio de ambiente de trabajo con los hallazgos del examen realizado a los obreros en un yacimiento minera del sur peruano. Para dicha correlación, se consideró únicamente el subsuelo y el personal que lo labora, excluyendo todo lo relacionado con la superficie, a fin de no diluir la tasa de prevalencia de silicosis y por la diferencia que existe en el medio ambiente del trabajo de cada trabajador. La minera se encuentra a 4600 m.s.n.m y está compuesta por rocas volcánicas terciarias y metamórficas, donde la ventilación es de tipo natural, la extracción del mineral se efectúa por el nivel inferior mediante una locomotora y el personal minero carece de implementos de protección personal. De acuerdo a la exposición de polvo, concentración, contenido de sílice libre y datos de la minera, se concluyó que la tasa de prevalencia de la silicosis fue de 11% y estuvo asociada directamente a la exposición de polvo por ocupaciones y tiempo de trabajo.Por tanto, es necesario crear un programa de prevención de silicosis, donde se instale un sistema de tuberías de agua para la perforación en húmedo, se reduzca la jornada laboral a ocho horas, se emplee atomizadores de agua después de los disparos, efectuando las operaciones de cargo mineral en estado húmedo y por último, se realice un examen periódico a los trabajadores.
