El siguiente estudio describe la relación del proceso de electrificación de empresas eléctricas asociadas (Lima, Arequipa), con la minería y la industria azucarera. De los tres campos mencionados, es la minería, la actividad que ha contribuido mayormente al proceso de desarrollo eléctrico (30%), y con el 50% en su aprovechamiento de potencial hidroeléctrico. Asimismo, las necesidades de electricidad para la producción de cobre, zinc y plomo son de 1, 800, 4600 y 450 Kw. -hr. por tonelada de mineral en las minerías del país, Cerro de Pasco y Junin, revelando un espacio de reserva de 600, 000 kw hasta el año de 1975. En este sentido, el proyecto hidroeléctrico del Mantaro, se considera como el sistema eléctrico más idóneo dentro del Plan de Electrificación Nacional, cuya producción alcanza 513,000 Kw. para la ciudad de Lima -en tanto fines de prestación de servicios púlblicos-, y se interconecta posteriormente con la costa norte del Perú. En consecuencia, la ejecución de esta primera etapa del Mantaro, permite alimentar al yacimiento minero de Cerro de Pasco, y al 90% de las minas de los departamentos de Junín, Pasco y Lima.

Monazite placers in a region of the Carolinas explored in 1951-1954 by the USGS are estimated to contain at least 53,000 short tons of thorium and 4600 short tons of uranium. None of these deposits is being mined. The 5200-sq mile area investigated extends northeast along the western Piedmont from the Savannah River in South Carolina to the Catawba River in North Carolina. Much of the region is 700 to 1100 ft above sea level. Gentle hills and broad interfluves give a local relief of 100 to 200 ft. This increases to 1700 ft at the west margin of the area where the east flank of the Blue Ridge is approached in South Carolina and the South Mts. are entered in North Carolina.

Since discovery of silver-gold lode deposits in 1864, the Butte district has produced more than $2.25 billion worth of copper, zinc, manganese, silver, and gold, an unprecedented value in the mining world. Exhaustion of the gold placer deposits along Silver Bow Creek, southwest of Butte, forced the early-day placer miners to turn their attention to the bold out- crops of the many veins exposed on the hillsides above the placer diggings. These outcrops bore silver and gold, and enough so that many lode claims were located. Such famous silver mines as the Alice, Moulton, Magna Carta, Nettie, and Blue Bird were developed. These and many smaller operations contributed to making Montana the leading silver-producing state in the 1880's. As depth was gained in the silver mines in certain parts of the district, occurrence of zinc minerals became troublesome. Zinc was not recoverable at the time, and in the chloridizing, roasting, and amalgamation of the ores, silver and gold recovery was greatly reduced. A period of active silver mining continued until 1892, when a decline in the price of silver brought the silver mining period to a close. Elsewhere in the district it was discovered that while some of the veins contained silver ores in the oxidized portions, the predominant minerals that were deeper were copper-bearing. Marcus Daly exposed rich copper ore on the 300 level of the Anaconda mine in 1891, and mining in the district disclosed that copper was destined to be developed in abundance. Early copper ore shipments were made to Swansea, Wales.

The lack of technical information regarding the physical characteristics of kaolins and bauxitic kaolins, rejected during the mining of bauxite near Eufaula, Ala., has retarded their commercial utilization. This investigation was undertaken to determine their behavior when used in refractories. Ores were evaluated as refractory raw materials by compounding dry-press mixtures and specialties following procedures common to the industry. Products now on the market were used for comparison in laboratory evaluation.

Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.

Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. Probable ore reserves are sufficient to cover this period and additional ore will certainly be developed.INTRODUCTIQNSince 1934, Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. has been mining a lode gold ore at Chewton, near Castleniaine, and treating it by stamp milling and plate amalgamation, plus table concentration of auriferous sulphides. This paper is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits of New Mexico. Most of the descriptions are from field examinations by the senior author. Reported tungsten occurrences that were not visited are listed below: Colfax County: Occurrences of ferberite in thin veins in Willow Creek near Elizabethtown.4/ Dona Ana County: Small, low-grade occurrences of scheelite near the summit of the Organ Mountains about 15 miles east of Las Cruces. Hidalgo County: Scheelite reported in the Daisy mine 7 miles southeast of Hachita. Ores are carbonates containing copper, gold, silver, and bismuth.5/

This is one of a series of reports covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It describes briefly most of the known tungsten deposits in Yuma, Maricopa, Pinal, and Graham Counties, Ariz. Most of those described were examined by the author. An effort was made to determine the position of the various deposits by section, township, and range and to give accurate road direction to each property from a prominent landmark. All available maps have been used in making these determinations, but in unsurveyed areas it was necessary to make approximate projections of subdivisions. The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian.

This report was prepared as a background reference for future publica¬tions concerning the damping capacity of metals and alloys. It contains a broad description of the theory and methods of measuring damping capacity and correlates the developments of the past decade in terminology, units, and techniques. Damping-capacity instrumentation at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., is described. The bibliography contains over 150 references to recent articles, each tabulated as to material investigated and test variables, such as frequency, stress, mode of vibration, and temperature. INTRODUCTION After it discovered high-damping manganese-copper alloys before World War II, the Bureau of Mines began research on the damping capacity of alloys and has continued to expand this activity to the present time. In physical metallurgy, damping capacity has become an important research tool in the Bureau. The physical measurement of the damping properties of alloys was begun at the College Park laboratories, and later conducted at Salt Lake City under the direction of Dr. E. V. Potter. Among the many articles resulting from this work, Damping Capacity of Metals (108)3/ has received frequent men¬tion in more recent literature and describes briefly the methods of measurement employed at that time.

Tungsten metal, chemically equivalent to commercial grade, is produced by electrolysis of impure tungsten compounds or scheelite in an alkali, phosphate or borate electrolyte. A preliminary investigation of fused-bath electrolysis shows the effect of electrolyte composition, temperature, and current density on current efficiency, yield, crystal structure, and purity of product. Experiments show that tungsten can be electrowon from scheelite in a fused alkali, phosphate, or borate bath with similar results. Studies on electrolyte composition show that the addition of sodium chloride is essential to both electrolytes in treating scheelite. Although its main function is to react with or flux the CaO, it also increases the bath fluidity. Temperature studies revealed optimum ranges between 900° and 1,100° C.; 900° C. proved satisfactory for tungsten trioxide, and 950° to 1,050° C. for scheelite. Current efficiencies were satisfactory for all current densities ranging from 10 to 57 a./dm.2. Yields were 400 to 650 g./kw.-hr. over the same current-density range. Crystal size and purity of the product are functions of temperature, current density, and amount of impurities in the electrolyte. Deposited crystals vary in shape from spherical grains to clusters of dendritic hexagonal needles, and in size from smaller than 35 to 570 microns. The purity of the tungsten metal produced ranges from 99.7 to 99.94 percent.

These investigations were undertaken as part of a program to determine the optimum X-ray spectral lines to use for analyzing the wide variety of samples received by the X-ray Laboratory. Theoretical calculations and experimental data derived from these investigations show that longer wavelength spectral lines, > 2A, are very useful for many analytical problems. Because of the low fluorescence yield of the elements of atomic numbers 13-22 and the small depth of penetration of their X-ray spectral lines, these elements were originally considered to be insensitive; however, these studies show that the wide dispersion of their spectral lines, coupled with their weak beta lines, permits the use of wide collimation, thus increasing the line intensity. More importantly, the background due to scattered primary radiation is very low in the long-wavelength region.

The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. METALLURGICAL thermochemistry of titanium is a broad subject and (if data were available) could include a wide variety of topics. The present report is restricted to extractive metallurgy and to substances and reactions that bear upon the magnesium, sodium, and hydrogen-reduction processes employing titanium tetrachloride. The aim has been to present enough data so that the reader not only can check: the calculations for the reactions discussed but also can conduct related calculations if he so desires, without recourse to other compilations of data. The subject matter divides naturally into two parts-the selection of the data to be adopted and the application of these data to pertinent metallurgical reactions.

This report is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines describing methods and practices at various mines throughout the United States. A previous program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was well received by the mining industry and technical institutions and provided much source material for engineering textbooks and technical handbooks. The stringent wartime demands on the mining industry, the rapidly changing postwar economic situation, and greatly accelerated technologic growth have combined to render many of the previous data obsolete. The objective of the present program is to assemble reliable technical information on mining methods and practices throughout the country and present it for the use of the mining industry, technical schools, textbook authors, and other interested persons. This report deals with the design and development of the Berkeley open- pit mine at Butte, Mont., owned and operated by The Anaconda Company. The Berkeley pit is but one facet of a well-organized and integrated copper-mining operation involving the entire Butte district. Vein-type mining, important for 75 years, is still in progress at depths from 600 feet to nearly 1 mile; on intermediate levels, low-grade ore left untouched by earlier vein-type mines is being extracted by block caving entire ore zones,3/ and secondarily enriched but lower grade near-surface portions of the same ore zones are being mined by open-pit operations (fig. 1). The Berkeley pit itself is named for the Berkeley mine, one of the old mines that extracted copper ore from high-grade veins in the area that now will be mined by open-pit methods.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Greenlee County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed substantially to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The morenci open-pit mine (see photograph, fig. 1) is in southeastern [zona] (fig. 2), on U.S. Highway 666 about 5 miles north of Clifton, county at of Greenlee County. The concentrator and smelter are near the mine at an altitude of about 4,400 feet. Figure 3 is a map of the mine and plant.

THIS INFORMATION CIRCULAR covers the calendar year 1055 and contains statistical data on employment and injuries pertinent to metal and nonmetal mining and to their mills and processing plants that are voluntarily reported annually to the Federal Bureau of Mmes. This report, unlike previous publications, lists not only production and development workers but also office employees associated with mining and milling or processing. The last publication m the series, Information Circular 7798, Injury Experience in the Metal and Nonmetal Industries, 1954, also contains unpublished injury and employment statistics for 1943 through 1953. The Bureau is authorized to request data on injuries and employment from operators in the metal- and nonmetal-mining industries. The information voluntarily submitted by these operators contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the mineral mining industries as it discloses the hazards to which metal and nonmetal workers are continually exposed during mineral extractive operations.

The construction and operation of a simple and accurate vacuum-fusion apparatus are described in detail. Absolute accuracy of the oxygen analysis has been determined by the reduction of oxides weighed to 20.01 mg. The Bureau of Standards steel samples have been analyzed repeatedly, and their inadequacy for the acceptable range of oxygen is presented. The limits of interference of manganese, aluminum, and titanium, and the effects of tin and water-cooling of the furnace tube have been investigated in detail. ANALYSIS by the vacuum-fusion method consists of melting a sample in a degassed graphite crucible under high vacuum and extracting oxygen as carbon monoxide, and nitrogen and hydrogen as gaseous elements. The resulting gas mixture is analyzed for its constituents, from which oxygen, nitrogen, and frequently hydrogen may be determined within 1/2 hr or less. The history and summary of methods1-4 and extensive reviews of literature'.' for the determination of gases in metals have been published in detail. The foundation of the modern vacuum-fusion method of analysis was laid by Jordan and Eckman,11 and Oberhoffer and his associates.1, 10 Diergarten,11, 12 Meyer,13 Thanheiser et al.,14, 15 Ericson and Benedicks,16 Ziegler,17, 18 Sloman,16-23 Thompson et al.,24 and later many others contributed to the improvement, accuracy, and limitations of the method. In some investigations, however, the limitations of the procedure and the errors involved in the analysis require further critical examination and evaluation. In many apparatuses, lunnecessarily complicated and cumbersome features and elaborate precautionary measures do not have conclusive advantages. The purpose of this invest:igation was, therefore, a) to construct a very simple and accurate apparatus, b) to determine the absolute accuracy of results, c) to establish the limits of interference of manganese. aluminum, and titanium, d) to reexamine critically the reduction and recovery of oxygen from oxide powders of various sizes, and e) to evaluate critically the eight steels of the Bureau of Standards."' Apparatus The apparatus used in this investigation is shown in Fig. 1. It has been used for over three years, during which several modifications were made. A brief description of the apparatus is as follows. The transparent silica or Vycor tube, E, is joined to the Pyrex head, B, by mean of a face to face ground joint sealed with mercury. A similarly sealed ball and socket joint would also have been satisfactory. A standard tapered ground joint, successfully used by some investigators, was tried, but in the absence of grease or vacuum cement it was very difficult to disassemble the joint. The graphite crucible, G, 15/16 or l 1/8 in. OD, 2 1/2 or 3 in. high, 1/10 in. wall, shown enlarged in Fig. 3a, is made from the rods containing less than 0.08 pet ash. Two baffles, overlapping sufficiently to prevent spattering, are inserted in two opposite slots cut on a band saw. Two small holes in the baffles permit the temperature measurement of the melt. A second type of crucible, Fig. 2, G, shown enlarged in Fig. 3b, is also satisfactory, though not as convenient as the crucible shown in Fig. 3a. Somewhat similar but more elaborate crucibles with baffles were first tried by Ericson and Benedicks,'" but were abandoned in favor of a crucible with a stopper and a peripheral graphite powder filter. Various versions of their crucible with a stopper have later been used by other analysts, 10-27, 27-30 The crucible is packed directly in E, Figs. 1 and 2, with —35 + 48 graphite powder for shielding and insulation. A minimum layer of 7 mm of powder is necessary for keeping E cool and minimizing the blank. The first use of graphite powder was made by Sloman,10-23 Who found that —200 mesh was the most satisfactory. The author tried various size powders from +20 to —100 mesh and found that a) particles of 28 mesh or larger were not sufficiently insulating and were heated by the induction current, b) the powder finer than 60 mesh packed too much and did not readily permit the escape of gases even when the crucible was heated very slowly; hence, the powder was occasionally blown out of the side in the crucible and in the mercury pump. This report presents the results of a Bureau of Mines study to identify clays found in several petroleum-reservoir rocks in the Tejon-Grapevine area, Kern County, Calif., and to determine the effect of water sensitivity of the clays on the permeability of the reservoir rocks. The clays in the porous rocks were examined in detail, and the clay-mineral types were identified by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical and dye-staining methods. Fresh-water damage to the permeability of the oil-reservoir rocks was indicated by a study of 125 core samples from productive formations. The study indicated that, although clays were generally less than 5 percent of the reservoir rocks, they swelled in water, particularly fresh water, and nearly blocked the flow channels through which oil flows to the well, effectively reducing the permeability of the formations. The average permeability of rock decreased from 1,600 millidarcys in air to 620 millidarcys in salt water and 120 millidarcys in fresh water. The dominant clays in the oil-bearing sandstones were members of the montmorillonite group. They were associated with smaller quantities of clays found to be in the mica or illite group. None of the cores appeared to contain clays of the kaolinite group. In the lower section of the J.V. sandstone indications of what appeared to be the mineral sepiolite were noted.

Studies on more efficient utilization of petroleum have been made for 50 years by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this work, the Bureau has analyzed thousands of samples of crude oil by its standardized routine method, and many of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published from 1921 to 1959, and brings up to date the information in Information Circular 7470 3 and in the appendix of Bulletin 490.4 The routine method of analysis and the equipment originally were described in a report by Dean and associates. 5 This report has long been out of print, but Bulletin 490, bringing the procedure and its modifications to date, was published in 1951. 6 Briefly, the procedure consists of testing, by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, viscosity, pour point, and (more recently) nitrogen; and, by a standardized procedure, distilling a portion of the crude oil and determining certain properties on the separated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the procedure, and the distillation data obtained are used to compute the approximate amounts of products present in the sample--such as percentages of gasoline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The principal data and results are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of crude oil from a recently developed field is shown in table 1. Compilations of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses often are included in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports.

MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.
