The Mouat copper-nickel deposit in Stillwater County, south-central Montana, was examined by Paul T. Allsman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in 1939. Because of the strategic importance of nickel, a project was executed by John East, Jr., J. J. Naughton, and E. W. Newman, engineers of the Bureau, to further delimit some of the copper-nickel sulfide-bearing bodies that had been discovered by the Anaconda Copper Mining. Co. in 1937 and to investigate the central part of the deposit, which had not been drilled previously. This report is based largely upon the results of the. Bureau of Mines investigation and the results of exploration by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. In addition, a brief description is given of some other copper-nickel sulfide-bearing deposits along tho Stillwater Complex.

The Reeder No. 1 well was drilled by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as agents for the Defense Plant Corporation. The well is south of Crescent Junction near Thompson, Grand County, Utah. It was started May 5, 1942, and completed August 3, 1942, for the purpose of con-firming the presence of magnesium salts in a deeply buried bed. Drilling was done under contract by the Mack Drilling Co. This report contains an outline of the physical features of the well, a brief history of drilling, and a description of the deposits and occurrences of oil and gas encountered in the drill hole. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is described in considerable detail, with particular emphasis on drilling procedure and sampling. The report is concluded with a brief description of core-sample preparation for analyses. Appendix A comprises a log of the drill hole, and appendix B is a tabulation of analyses of cores.

"The Mississagi quartzite is the basal formation of the Quirke Lake trough. As it is traced around the rim, a gradual change in dip is observed, as follows:Northwest corner 50 degrees south.Algom Quirke mine 34 degrees south.Quirke Lake 25 degrees south.Whiskey Lake 22 degrees west.Pecors Lake 25 degrees north.Algom Nordic mine 18 degrees north.Elliot Lake 11 degrees north.Pistol Lake 5-7 degrees west.Thus the apparent synclinal axis is a curving east-west line lying closer to the north limb than to the south. The axis appears to plunge west at about 5 degrees.The Huronian sediments lie on a basement of granites, gabbros, and volcanics. Diamond drill evidence indicates that this basement has a surface of peneplanation, and that the areas of soft basic rock have a smoother topography than the granite. For the most part the orebodies at the Quirke and Nordic mines overlie a basement of soft basic rock.The Mississagi formation is the host rock of the deposits, and its primary structures are suggestive of the conditions under which the conglomerate beds were deposited. Cross-bedding is common, although normal bedding varies from thick to thin to essentially lacking. Grain gradation is not common. Where coarse and fine grains occur together, the coarse tend to be more rounded than the fine. These features are characteristic of shallow-water deposits, laid down above the lower limit of wave action. Therefore, the quartz-pebble conglomerates probably represent ancient water courses, bays, beaches, and bars.The causes governing the creation of the trough can only be conjectured, but there is evidence that both subsidence and compressive stresses played active roles. Drag-folds in argillite beds near Whiskey Lake indicate compressive stress. On the other hand, gentle crumpling in thin-bedded limestones on Quirke Lake is probably due to pre-induration slumping and folding. If strong compression had been widespread within the trough, one would expect drag-folding and shearing of the incompetent beds to be more general. Two large-scale, fold-like structures were mapped by Collins, but their axes do not parallel the trough axis, and they are therefore not related to the major structure."

In about 1930, Degussa applied for a patent on a process for the of oxides, carbides, sulfides, and other nonmetallic impurities by filtration in the molter state. The filtering media listed were wire screen, coke, and ceramic materials, and quartz. It was also suggested that filtration might be combined with chemical reaction between the metal and the filter medium or that might be added to the system. No patent was granted on the general scheme, but several years later a patent was granted on a continuous process purification of crude light metals, especially or alkali earth and their alloys. The melt was stirred at 1 temperature at which the impurities (such as oxides and salts) remained solid and the metal was drawn through a filter tube. The impurities collected under the filter and were removed by a screw conveyor. Crude sodium was purified by this process in Degussa's Knapsack plant. During the last war, when the refining of scrap became a very urgent Problem in Germany, experimental investigations were extended to separation of other metals and metallic compounds by filtration. Preliminary experiments seemed to confirm the opinion of Dr. L. Weiss that the principles of wet chemical filtration might be applied to a great extent in the purification of metal and alloys.

The primary purpose of the Bergius (hydrogenation of coal) and Fischer-Tropsch (hydrogenation of carbon monoxide) processes is the production of synthetic liquid fuels. This objective is of importance in insuring an adequate supply of motor fuels and lubricating oils in the United States. In the urgency of the basic research and process development work on synthetic liquid fuels, the possibilities for the production of synthetic chemicals inherent in these processes have hitherto received little attention in this country. However, the by-products, as well as the primary products, from the Bergius and Fischer-Tropsch processes are rich source materials for organic chemicals. The overhead oil from liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal, for example, contains benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, aromatic solvents, about 20 percent tar acids (largely phenol, cresols, and xylenols), and 3 percent nitrogen bases. Wax, alcohols, and acids are by--products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In addition, techniques have been developed which make possible the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and other oxygenated organic compounds. These chemicals are more valuable on a unit basis than gasoline. Because of continued rapid expansion of the plastic, resin, lacquer, and solvent industries, larger amounts of many of these chemicals will be needed in the near future.

Bureau of Mines engineers engaged in studying stimulative methods of recovering oil have been making a series of tests on the effectiveness' of methods that may be applied in water flooding oil-bearing sandstones. The report gives the test procedures and results of a study of the rates and pressures used for injecting water into several sandstone formations in the Mid-Continent fields for the purpose of learning more about the mechanics and efficiency of the flooding process and to provide useful information for operators of water floods in this area.

WHILE methods of utilizing blast-furnace slag have been developing, a great deal of literature on the subject has accumulated, but no comprehensive summary of information that would be helpful to engineers, contractors, architects, chemists, and others in under-standing and more successfully using this byproduct of the iron and steel industry has been published in the English language. The National Slag Association recognized the need for such a publication, and the Problems Committee of the Association under-took in 1943 to accumulate the necessary material. Over a period of several years this committee compiled pertinent information in manuscript form, and in 1948 the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association made an agreement whereby the Bureau was to prepare the data for publication as a cooperative bulletin of the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association.

The Eufaula bauxite district of Barbour and Henry Counties in southeast Alabama covers an area approximately 14 miles long, 6 miles wide at the eastern extremity near the Chattahoochee River, and 10 miles wide at the western end near the east fork of the Choctawhatchee River (see figs. 1 and 2). The long axis of this polygon bears a little south of east.

This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. This circular describes four modern change houses of the Lake Superior iron - ore district , all conceived and constructed since 1937. The oldest change house described herein was constructed and occupied in 1938 , yet it embodies the modern improvement of air - conditioning . The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate improvements with regard to health and safety features combined in the construction , arrangement , ventilation , heating ,lighting , and other features , with the aid of photographs , sketches , and diagrams . The modern change house is a fire - resistant structure in which intermingling of men in mine clothes and men in street clothes , hazardous dust , heat and humidity , crowding , poor lighting , slippery and muddy floors , and inadequate facilities for clothes and for bathing have been largely eliminated . The miner coming off shift at a modern mine no longer faces the elements when he gets off the cage . He travels through a tunnel to the change house , where he is cooled gradually by room temperatures as he passes from the mineclothes section and shower room to the street - clothes room . He is assured of dry clothes when he is ready for them . No longer is he sent out of the change house into a muddy yard to drive away as best he can . The modern change house has an improved parking lot and graveled or concreted walkways from it to the change house entrances .

The total capacity of the natural-gasoline industry to produce light hydrocarbon products increased to 21,322,000 gallons ( 507,670 barrels ) daily on January 1 , 1948 , from 17,928,000 gallons ( 426,860 barrels ) daily on January 1 , 1946. Expansion of the industry in the first two post -war years , 1946 end 1947 , thus averaged 9 percent annually , compared with 6 percent annually in the last two war years , 1944 and 1945 . The number of cycle plants increased only from 37 to 39 in the years 1946 and 1947 , and total capacity of these plants gained 21 percent to 5,857,000 gallons de ily on January 1 , 1948 , represent ing 27.5 percent of the total capacity of the industry , compared with 27.0 percent on January 1 , 1946. All other plants decreased in number in the two-year period from 589 to 510 on January 1 , 1948 , but their total daily capacity increased 18 percent to 15,465,000 gallons . The daily capacity of the average plant in the industry was enlarged from 28,600 gallons on January 1 , 1946 , to 38,800 gallons on January 1 , 1948 , continuing the long -established trend to producing units of greater size and efficiency . The average cycle plant capacity increased from 131,000 gallons daily to 150,200 gallons daily on the same dates as the average capacity of all other natural -gasoline plants increased from 22,200 gallons to 30,300 gallons . Owing to the elimination of small , obsolescent plants in Illinois , Oklahoma , and Pennsylvania , these States experienced the greatest reductions in numbers of plants in 1946 and 1947. In Oklahoma and Texas , several consolidations of two or more plants into a single operating unit were reported . Louisiana and Mississippi were the only States in which the number of plants increased , but daily capacity to produce light products was larger in eleven States on January 1 , 1948, than two years earlier . Added facilities in California and Texas accounted for 41 and 36 percent , respectively, of the national gain in capacity .

"INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"

The Iron Mountain investigations were part of a comprehensive program for making a national inventory of raw materials used in the production of steel. A tentative program of core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was set up for exploration of more promising iron deposits. Iron Mountain was selected as worthy of investigation because it could serve as a potential source of ore for the war-created steel plant at Fontana, Calif. The deposits were reported on by an engineer in October 1943. The purpose of the project was to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ore bodies and to obtain accurate material data on them.

"INTRODUCTION For many generations the Indian tribes of the southwestern deserts knew of the thermal springs of the Coso District in southwestern Inyo County, Calif. Belief in the reputedly healing qualities of the waters and muds of the area was widespread. F. J. Sanders discovered mercury in the siliceous sinter around the hot springs while he was exploiting the district as a health resort. In searching for new domestic sources of supply of strategic minerals, authorized under the Strategic Materials Act, 3/,the Geological Survey 4/ first examined the deposits, which were drilled and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in the spring of 1941.The deposits investigated comprised three units known, respectively, as The Devils Kitchen, Nicol, and Wheeler. Most of the work was done at the first two.Of particular interest in the Bureau's work on the project was the adaptation and use of the bucket drill as a tool for sampling shallow, soft ore deposit."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the seventeenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

Introduction Mining of the orebody of the Sullivan mine, which is owned and operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, has reached a point where pillar extraction is rapidly becoming a major part of the operation. Very few of the larger pillars have been completely extracted; consequently, this paper contains much that is theory and expectation. Due to early mining methods and the physical characteristics of the Sullivan deposit, similar conditions may not exist in other older mines facing the problems of pillar extraction, but it is thought that the methods employed and those contemplated may be of general interest. History The Sullivan orebody, which is at Kimberley in the Fort Steele mining division of the East Kootenay district of British Columbia, was discovered in May, 1892, by Messrs. Sullivan, Smith, Cleaver, and Burchett. After passing through the hands of several owners the property was optioned in 1909, and purchased in 1910, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Early mining was highly selective, the objective being a clean, high-grade silver-lead ore. By 1923 the difficulties of milling the very complex ore had been overcome and the first unit of a concentrator was completed with a capacity of 2,500 tons daily. Capacity was increased by stages to the present rate of 8,500 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped over the Canadian Pacific railway ? to the Company smelter at Tadanac, British Columbia, for final treatment. Approximately 45,000,000 tons of ore has been mined to date.
