Introduction The circumstances under which the gold mining industry was forced to curtail operations a few years ago are well known to all. The effect of those circumstances is particularly noticeable when one enters some of the larger mills that were designed, in better times, to treat relatively large tonnages. On their grinding floors one will observe that a number of grinding units are lying idle, and the ravages of rust are everywhere in evidence. The same applies to other equipment throughout these mills. In 1941, we found it necessary to reduce tonnage considerably in the Wright-Hargreaves mill. With the assumption that a lower tonnage would be of long duration, we began to focus our attention on some of the idle equipment with a view to re-arrangement of the flow-sheet for greater economy of operation. In an article by the writer published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (March, April, and May issues, 1939) , it was pointed out that in designing this mill there was a very limited floor space available. The choice of thickening equipment was imposed solely by the necessity for space: conservation. Thickening by gravity would have required 5,000 square feet of floor space, whereas Genter thickeners required only 1,200 square feet. As a consequence, the Genters were chosen. The decision to add flotation to the circuit was made primarily to save space. On a cost-plus-tail basis, 80 to 100 hours agitation on all pulp would produce similar overall results, but would require much more space.

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines has been investigating fires and explosions in mines, tunnels, buildings, and hazardous processes of various kinds. Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents in many hazardous processes require the collection and analysis of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the sources of ignition. Complex mixtures of gases often encountered in mines, tunnels, and industrial processes may well presage imminent danger from explosions. This report discusses some practicable methods of utilizing the analyses of samples of complex mixtures of gases in their application to the many problems that arise from their presence.

Since early in 1940 the Bureau of Mines has been concerned with possible means of utilizing manganese-bearing materials from the Missouri Valley manganese deposit. During the period between July 1945 and August 1947, the Bureau of Mines undertook to complete certain phases of the problem by re-evaluating the results of earlier work and supplementing the findings by additional operations and field studies considered necessary to permit drawing of final conclusions. Distinctive discoloration marks the outcrop of the manganese deposit which is exposed on both flanks of the Missouri River Valley and its major tributaries for a peripheral distance of approximately 523 miles in south-central South Dakota. The apparent magnitude of the deposit, judged largely from observation of the outcrop, had led to much speculation as to its actual value in terms of tonnage and grade. Similarly, investigative work aimed at developing a means of winning a usable manganese-rich product from the deposit had reached no conclusion, except that certain methods showed more promise than others for accomplishing the final objective.

The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau of Mines progress to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxite and. clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite sui table for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of' World War II; an intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted. The laboratory development was described in a preceding Bureau of Mines publication wherein the basic theory for the design and erection of a pilot plant maybe found. A 2-ton-per-day continuous pilot plant was constructed and successfully operated at College Park, Md., which demonstrated conclusively the chemical and mechanical feasibility of a solvent purification process for aluminum sulfate. The estimated production cost of $38.64 indicates that under present market conditions the process would not be economically feasible.

Alabama probably has the most extensive deposits of high-grade flake graphite in the United States and was the largest producer during World War I. Therefore, with the outbreak of World War II, users of flake graphite turned again to Alabama to supply their requirements. Flake graphite is the most important ingredient contained in graphite crucibles used in melting crucible steel and special alloys essential for war purposes. Early in World War II the Army and Navy placed flake graphite on the list of critical war materials. During World War I, when the supply of Ceylon graphite (then in demand) was cut off, large quantities of flake graphite were produced in Alabama, and about 40 mills were built. Most of these were abandoned after the war when imports of the cheaper Madagascar flake (which gradually replaced Ceylon graphite) began to reach this country. With the beginning of World War II, the Madagascar supply was cut off', and consumers were again compelled to look to domestic sources for their supplies. They found only one small mill in operation, that of the Ceylon Graphite Co. in Coosa County, Ala. The Bureau of Mines made a preliminary examination of the Alabama flake graphite deposits in 1940. Samples were taken and tested at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa.

Certain gas-making processes are in use in Europe, particularly in Germany, which differ radically from those in common use in America. A number of them are of particular interest because they are different. The questions naturally arise: Are any of them applicable to the making of gas in this country and, if so, with what particular type of solid fuel? It is a fact that some of them were developed with consideration of a particular set of conditions and for the utilization of solid fuels available in Germany. The latter fuels, in certain characteristics, are unlike the high-rank fuels commonly used for making gas in the United States; therefore, in attempting to evaluate the various foreign- developed processes with regard to usefulness here, one must give attention to the particular conditions that will prevail in any specified case and also the characteristics and requirements of the process and generator under considera- tion. Three of the processes that were developed and put into commercial operation in Germany, and which have some characteristics in common, are con- sidered in particular in this publication; they are: 1. Lurgi pressure gasification process. 2. Winkler process. 3. The Leuna slagging-type producer-gas process. Each of these processes requires steam and oxygen as gas-maiding fluids. For a number of years, oxygen, has been used in a relatively pure state,. along with steam, in making gas in Germany, and many of the difficulties initi-. ally encountered have been overcome. Although it appears that oxygen recovered from air was first used in this manner as a method of utilizing a byproduct in a plant that used the nitrogen complement in the manufacture of ammonia; more recently, the oxygen was made particularly for the purpose. The fuels - brown coal or lignite used in processes 1 and 2 were not suitable for use in the older and commonly used intermittent-type water-gas generators, and it was necessary, therefore, to devise a different process for gasifying them. A gas of higher heating value than producer gas, was desired, and the use of oxygen (not air) along with steam made possible the production of the desired gas without nitrogen dilution, which characterizes producer gas. Operating data presented herein are based upon observations by, members of the Technical Oil Mission at plants in Germany, on records, and on information vocally given to members of the lässion, including the author, while visiting those plants, and they are believed to be reasonably correct; however, certain hasic observations, comparisons, and conclusions are. made by the author.

Germany's' wartime coal-tar industry had two main branches, which can best be considered individually because their raw materials, operations, and distributions were almost completely separated. One branch, old and well-established, was concerned almost entirely with processing coal tar produced by the high-temperature carbonization of caking bituminous coal. Carbonization was effected principally in byproduct- coke ovens and to less extent in vertical, horizontal, and inclined retorts. The high-temperature tar was all processed in tar-distilling plants that handled high-temperature tar almost exclusively.

"INTRODUCTION In September 1943, the Bureau of Mines conducted a limited program of churn drilling on the Winskell property in the Shullsburg area of Lafayette County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort war being made to increase the production of metals necessary for the war program.Drilling described supplemented a previous drilling program conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. The results of both programs encouraged subsequent investigation by the Cuba Mining Co. and eventual development of the Andrews mine.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The organic act that became effective July 1, 1910, imposes two very definite primary obligations upon the Bureau of Mines: (1) The prevention of loss of life and limb and the protection of the health of workers in the mineral industries, and (2) the conservation and scientific utilization of the country's mineral resources.The subject of this publication falls within the scope of both of these responsibilities by reason of the fact that (1) certain safety precautions are involved in combating even surface fires and, (2) although peat is not now, so far as known, utilized commercially or otherwise in this country as a fuel, it is extremely valuable agriculturally in at least one of our States, The justification for the conservation of such low-grade fuel through fire prevention appears warranted because of its present value to agriculture and the possible advantages accruing to future generations as a source of heat and power.Although the Bureau of Mines has published information on the origin and uses of peat, this is the first attempt to give out data concerning the prevention and control of peat-bog fires. Although the information presented here is restricted to the Lake Superior District, California, and Florida, there may be similar conditions in other sections of the country that have not come to the attention of engineers of the Bureau of Nines."

Surveying and exploring were done at the request of Congress for an investigation of raw materials for the production of steel.A wartime steel plant has been established at Fontana, San Bernardino County, and a backlog of iron-ore reserve for the maintenance of permanent steel industry on the West Coast will be of National benefit in the postwar period.W. D. McMillan, a mining engineer the Bureau of Mines, examined the property in May 1942, and it was reexamined by D. W. Butner, also of the Bureau, in October 1943. Expansion in total capacity of the natural-gasoline industry.to produce light products continued in 1944 and 1945. The average rate of gain, however, was reduced to about 6 percent annually from over 9 percent in the preceding 4-year period. New facilities at cycle plants again accounted for most of the increase in productive capacity. Between January 1, 1944, and January 1, 1946, the number of cycle plants increased from 32 to 37 and their total capacity from 3,278 thousand gallons daily to 4,848 thousand (48 percent). Capacity of all other plants in the industry increased in the same period from 12,735 thousand gallons daily to 13,080 thousand, or only 3 percent. The capacity of the average plant increased to 28,600 gallons a day from 24,400 gallons on January 1, 1944, continuing the established trend. The average capacity of cycle plants increased to 131,000 gallons a day from 102,400 gallons, and the average capacity of all other natural-gasoline plants increased to 22,200 gallons a day from 20,400 gallons. Although the number of plants increased in only three States in the 2-year period (Texas, Okla- homa, and Arkansas), the total capacity of plants increased in eight States. A further decline of 29 reduced the total number of plants to 626 on January 1, 1946. Compared with 10 years earlier, gasoline plants were more numerous in only 4 States: Texas (48 more), New Mexico (7 more), Arkansas (2 more), and Louisiana (1 more). The largest declines, in order, were in Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and California. The number of plants with fractionating equipment for separating the liquefied gases from heavier fractions was 202 on January 1, 1946 and 182 2 years earlier. The principal changes in number and capacity of shut-down plants were an increase in Texas and a decrease in California. Shut-down natural-gaso- line plants are usually among the smallest units in their vicinity.

The Anderson prospect is one of a number of properties investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the course of preliminary studies of the lead-zinc districts of northern Stevens County, Washington. examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. This examination was supplemented in late 1944 and the spring of 1945 by pre- The property was first liminary angle-dozer trenching and core-drilling. A second examination of the property was made by the junior author in November 1945. The data obtained in the course of these studies is presented in the following report.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

TANTALUM metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involving high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals become brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element columbium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum- columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen- containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides, one of the authors under- took4 an investigation of the thermo- chemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exothermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the process should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonlv made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. "INTRODUCTION AND RESUMEThe Reward zinc property was one of the first selected for exploration by the Bureau of Mines at time when zinc supplies for war production were very short. Preliminary examination indicated that an appreciable tonnage of zinc that could be developed for early production might be found by diamond drilling. The geology was mapped by the Federal Geological Survey, and 14 holes were diamond drilled by the Bureau of Mines. This work was started in September 1942 and completed in September 1943.The Reward is an old property in southwestern Pinal County, 26 miles from Casa Grande on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mining was begun in the early 1880's and was continued intermittently by several operators to about 1917. About 400,0oo pounds of copper was produced from the north¬eastern part of the property, mainly from a 600-foot incline in oxidized copper ore that replaced a bed of limestone. This ore was mined out. A 400-foot vertical shaft in the copper area was inaccessible. A 325-foot vertical shaft had been sunk near the southwest end of the zinc-bearing area, and a 600-foot crosscut tunnel had been driven near the northeast end of the zinc area, but little zinc ore was produced. There were several shallow inclines and numerous surface pits between the main workings.The ores were deposited in Paleozaic limestones that strike northeast and dip about 40 degrees northwest. These are capped by Cretaceous clastic and volcanic rocks in the zinc area. The outcrops show mineralization in a segment of the limestone 4,500 feet long, which is limited by large cross faults at each end. Another large fault, which strikes north, separates the northeast third of the mineralized belt from the remainder. Copper predominates northeast of this fault and zinc southwest of it. The ore beds are cut by numerous small cross faults. Ore was deposited for short distances along some of these, but more of it made out from the fissures along certain replaceable limestone beds."

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made.
