Flexible synthetic membrane liners have become a standard facet to copper and gold heap leach pad design. While gold heap leach operations have utilized most types of synthetic liners, copper leach operations have commonly only been lined with polyethylene. The objective of this study was to determine if there are any chemical reasons why other synthetic membrane types could not be used to line a copper heap leach facility. With engineered consideration, the flexible membrane liner under the ore pile serves two purposes. The first provides a near impermeable boundary which aides greatly in the collection of the metal laden process solution. The second advantage to the flexible membrane is the almost non-permeable barrier to benefit increased environmental awareness that has led to an increase in solution containment technology. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a compatibility test for solutions and membrane liners. The EPA Method 9090 is intended for use in determining the chemical effects of a solution on the physical properties of the flexible membrane liner material intended to contain them. Data from these tests would assist in deciding whether a given liner material is acceptable for the intended application.

Blasting is the most commonly used excavation technique in mining and civil engineering applications. Blasting induces strong ground motions and fracturing of rock mass in rock excavations. Particularly, high ground motions may also induce some instability problems of rock mass and structures nearby. Furthermore, it may cause some environmental problems due to noise as well as vibrations of structures near the populated areas. Furthermore, flyrocks is another major issue for the safety of people and damage to machinery and equipments when blasting is employed. In this study, the authors explore the ways how to estimate the ground motions as a function of distance, amount of explosive, number of holes. The ground motions were measured by stand-alone accelerometers developed by the first author and some empirical relations are developed. The effect of ground motions on the instability issues of benches such as sliding, toppling and rockfalls were investigated. Furthermore, the flyrock issue is investigated and some empirical relations to estimate the maximum distance of flyrocks from the blasting relations are compared and discussed. "Subsea tunnel needs to be built over 50km long to connect between nations and continents. However there are only 19 tunnels longer than 5km in Korea, and there is no history of constructing and operating a tunnel longer than 50km. As the concept of a subsea tunnel, which withstands high water pressure and has an extremely long length is completely different from that of a land tunnel, all kinds of the latest technologies for tunnel construction are required such as survey and analysis of geology, design and construction under high water pressure, ventilation and prevention of disasters within an ultra long tunnel. Therefore, this paper describes the determination of tunnel cross-section under a high speed railway, structural stability, ventilation and fire safety under construction and operation, etc. through the virtual project for the length of 108km subsea tunnel under high water pressure of maximum 20bars from Honam to Jeju island in Korea. 1. INTRODUCTION The Honam-Jeju virtual project is subsea tunnel project to link from Honam(land) to Jeju(island) extending the currently operating Honam high speed railway line, and the same express train(t=18, design speed 350km/h, total train length 200m) operating at Honam line is applied in this project. As Honam-Jeju site is approximately 80km in straight distance with 160m maximum depth, subsea tunnel project should determine the various issues such as air quality/ventilation, aerodynamics, temperature, drainage, fire & life safety, structural stability. Figure 1. is the plan of subsea tunnel, with be constructed using Shield TBM. This double tube-Single track is composed of cross passages (every 350m in general section and 40m in emergency station), service tunnel, pressure relief ducts (every 250m), cross-over tunnels, shafts and emergency stations. 2. ALIGNMENT AND SITE CONDITON This project is planned as an ultra long tunnel of total length more than 105km via existing islands between Honam and Jeju island because straight alignment requires an artificial island which has high cost and construction risk, by deep water depth, though this is the shortest distance (see Fig 2). Water depth and topography in project site is divided into two blocks by Chuja Island. In first block to Chuja Island, depth of the water is 40m on average and maximum 60m, which indicates gradual change of water depth relatively. Also, outcrop bedrock is widely distributed near island."

The paper describes a practical methodology based on numerical modelling for the prediction of progressive failure of underground mine stopes with cable bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 stope at Kidd Creek Mine, Timmins, Ontario is presented. The stope was mined by blasthole open stoping in 1986 as a lead stope within a mining block between 36-1 and 38-2 levels. Initially designed to peak at 38-2 level, the stope back caved upwards approximately 40m towards 36-1 level. Cable bolts were installed above the stope from 36-1 level after caving had begun. The stope eventually stopped to cave when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. The paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modelling results of the case study. Numerical modelling is carried out using a finite element package known as e-z tools which has, among other things, a special cable/rockbolt simulation capability.

We conducted the Vermont Damage Experiment in central Vermont during July 2008. Five single-hole explosions with yields ranging from 60.8 kg (134 lbs) to 122.5 kg (270 lbs) were detonated in homogeneous, low fracture density granite. The goal of the experiment was to quantify the different levels of rock damage around the source and then relate the seismic wave generation to the degree and distribution of damage and fragmentation. In addition, explosives with different velocities of detonation (VOD), including black powder (0.53 km/sec; 1737 ft/sec), heavy ANFO (4.8 km/sec; 15734 ft/sec), and COMP B (8.1 km/sec; 26574 ft/sec) were detonated to relate the VOD to seismic wave generation and extent of damage zones in the source region. Over 120 seismic stations were deployed to record the explosions at distances between 5 m and 30 km (15 ft to 19 miles).

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

"Three types of anodic films (unsealed, hot water sealed and agent sealed) were prepared to study the effects of anodizing pores structure on the adhesive bonding performance of AA5754 automotive sheets. The morphology of the anodic films was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the composition was examined by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES). The adhesive bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment were investigated by using single lap shear test and salt spray corrosion test (SST), respectively. The results showed that the pores structure could significantly influence the adhesive bonding performance. The unsealed sample showed porous structure and provided high bonding strength, however, the durability was poor in corrosive environment. The hot water sealed sample showed fine and loose hydrated alumin a structure on the surface and provided high durability in corrosive environment, but the bonding strength was low. In contrast, the agent sealed sample provided both high bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment.INTRODUCTIONAdhesively bonded aluminum joints by using adhesives have been widely used for the realization of lightweight design in industrial applications like automotive and aerospace industry[1, 2]. Durable bonds which are capable of taking structural loads can be created due to a careful consideration of the way in which the joint is formed, the type of adhesive and the appropriate treatment of the adherend surfaces prior to bonding[3-6]. Experiences demonstrate that the surface treatment is the most critical step which could not be disregarded, since it is essential to achieve long-term service capability [7].In structural applications, a bonded assembly is expected to maintain a significant load and may be combined with exposure to harsh environmental conditions in its service life. For this purpose, the pretreatment for structural bonding of aluminum alloy must provide not only strong tensile strength and durability but also good corrosion resistance. Chromic acid anodizing (CAA) process provides an anodized layer which has good corrosion resistance while also exhibiting useful adhesion characteristics as well as lacquer coating retaining characteristics[8].However, the use of Cr (VI) is unadvised from a health and environmental point of view since it is toxic and carcinogenic, and this process is gradually limited even prohibited. Boeing's phosphoric acid anodizing(PAA) process provides a more open pore structure allowing penetration of high molecular primers/adhesives[8]and PAA process is the most widely used pre-surface treatment suitable for adhesive bonding between aluminum alloy components. Rahimi et al. demonstrated that nanostructure can be produced by PAA process and is affected by the time of pretreatment and anodizing parameters [9]. Xu et al.investigated the influence of surface energy and roughness on adhesive bonding through PAAprocess and provided improved adhesion performance under certain anodizing parameter[10]. However, PAA process is normally not recommended for a major concern of deterioration of the mechanical performance of the joints as a result of exposure to a wet and corrosive environment. Sulfuric acid anodizing(SAA)process, recently, has been widely used for corrosion protection and good base coating for the adhesion of lacquers in aerospace manufacturing[11]. The good performance is explained by properties such as the porous morphology and high adsorptive power of the oxide film, the chemical and electrical inertness of the anodized layer. Moreover, modified sulfuric acid could also used for adhesive bonding. The Bureau of Mines, investigated a cyanidation-carbon adsorption technique for extracting gold from arsenopyrite concentrates. Agitation leach experiments were conducted on 85-pct-minus-35-mesh gravity concentrates containing 21.8 oz gold and 6.4 oz silver per ton. Results obtained in leaching the concentrates showed that 96.9 pct gold and 90.7 pct silver extraction could be achieved in 96 hours of agitation. Gold and silver were recovered from the resulting pregnant solution by exposure to granular activated carbon in a countercurrent system. Carbon loadings of 2,556 oz of gold and 502 oz of silver per ton were achieved. These loadings are significantly higher than heretofore thought practical.

The Valzinco mine, Spotsylvania County, Va., is a lead-zinc deposit with minor quantities of copper. The property was reopened n 1942 by Panaminas, Inc. The Bureau of. Mines, in an effort to increase the reserves of the deposit to justify greater production, diamond-drilled nine holes totaling 4,213 feet during 1943. Drilling by the Bureau delimited the original ore body and discovered another ore body on the hanging-wall side, which was being developed by the company at the close of the project.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

"FOLLOWING the Leduc discovery •by Imperial Oil in 1947, The California Standard Company began to acquire land in the area immediately west of Edmonton and in line with the Leduc reef trend (Figure 1).The California Standard Winter-burn Province No. 1 in Lsd. 10, Section 4, Township 53, Range 25, West 4th, which was spudded, on the basis of a seismic anomaly, in December, 1949, failed to find reef. This well was located on the eastern .edge of a large land block which California Standard and Imperial Oil had pooled as a joint venture, with California Standard a:s the operator (Figure 2).The culmination •of an extensive exploration and land aquisition programme was the drilling of the California Standard-Acheson Province No. 1 well .in Lsd. 13, Section 2, Township 53, Range 26, West 4th. On August 24th, 1950, a drill stem test was run in the D-3 zone which had been encountered at 4,969 feet, and a flow rate of 702 barrels per day •of 36° gravity oil was obtained. Just previously, Imperial Oil had completed a similar programme in the Stony Plain Reserve with the swabbing-in of Imperial Stony Plain No. 1. These two discoveries set off a drilling programme to determine the extent and value of the oil accumulation.Subsequent drilling of wells some successful .and others not by several other companies as well as California Standard bias, .to date, still left much to be determined as to the approximate delineation of the productive limits of the Ache-son-Stony Plain area. However, to August 31st, 1951, there were twenty-one D-3 producers north of the reserve and three in the Stony Plain Reserve."

Las estrategias son las únicas formas sostenibles de crear valor en las empresas. Sin embargo, los resultados en gestión determinaron algunos fracasos en su aplicación. En este sentido, es necesario plantear una gestión que permita mecanismos de reacción más rápidos ante los cambios, priorizando la capacidad de ejecución del la estratategia que la formulación de esta en sí misma. Por ello, el presente texto señala la aplicación de una nueva estrategia que busca el cambio de comportamiento en una organización antigua como es la unidad minera Cerro de Pasco. Las nuevas estrategias se aplican a la gestión de seguridad y medio ambiente, en el que se mejoran los procesos, se incrementa la productividad, se crea una política de prevención, y existe una mejor utilización de todos los recursos. Asimismo se reducen los costos y se le da más valor a la empresa para que pueda contrarrestar las fluctuaciones de los precios de los metales.

"The Mississagi quartzite is the basal formation of the Quirke Lake trough. As it is traced around the rim, a gradual change in dip is observed, as follows:Northwest corner 50 degrees south.Algom Quirke mine 34 degrees south.Quirke Lake 25 degrees south.Whiskey Lake 22 degrees west.Pecors Lake 25 degrees north.Algom Nordic mine 18 degrees north.Elliot Lake 11 degrees north.Pistol Lake 5-7 degrees west.Thus the apparent synclinal axis is a curving east-west line lying closer to the north limb than to the south. The axis appears to plunge west at about 5 degrees.The Huronian sediments lie on a basement of granites, gabbros, and volcanics. Diamond drill evidence indicates that this basement has a surface of peneplanation, and that the areas of soft basic rock have a smoother topography than the granite. For the most part the orebodies at the Quirke and Nordic mines overlie a basement of soft basic rock.The Mississagi formation is the host rock of the deposits, and its primary structures are suggestive of the conditions under which the conglomerate beds were deposited. Cross-bedding is common, although normal bedding varies from thick to thin to essentially lacking. Grain gradation is not common. Where coarse and fine grains occur together, the coarse tend to be more rounded than the fine. These features are characteristic of shallow-water deposits, laid down above the lower limit of wave action. Therefore, the quartz-pebble conglomerates probably represent ancient water courses, bays, beaches, and bars.The causes governing the creation of the trough can only be conjectured, but there is evidence that both subsidence and compressive stresses played active roles. Drag-folds in argillite beds near Whiskey Lake indicate compressive stress. On the other hand, gentle crumpling in thin-bedded limestones on Quirke Lake is probably due to pre-induration slumping and folding. If strong compression had been widespread within the trough, one would expect drag-folding and shearing of the incompetent beds to be more general. Two large-scale, fold-like structures were mapped by Collins, but their axes do not parallel the trough axis, and they are therefore not related to the major structure."

To increase safety and productivity in mining , the potential uses and hazards of rigid foam were investigated by the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine . This research resulted in the development of chemical formulations , spraying equipment , and application procedures that permit safe and effective use of urethane foams for improving mine ventilation , for reducing weathering of mine rock and steel , for constructing seals in fire areas , and for thermal insulation .

Desde o período Neolítico, a argila é usada na produção de materiais para construção. Posteriormente, verificou-se que queima da argila em fornos aumentava a resistência do material, permitindo seu uso na maioria das formas abrasivas. Com a melhoria das propriedades, a cerâmica vermelha encontrou várias aplicações tais como, telhas, tijolos, louças e revestimentos. Na região estudada, a noroeste do Rio de Janeiro e a área leste da zona da mata mineira, as telhas produzidas e comercializadas exibem características correspondentes à argila local e ao método de queima. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a qualidade das telhas na região, referente às características geométricas, físicas e mecânicas, padronizadas pela norma NBR 15310:2009. De acordo com a análise dos resultados, concluiu-se que a tendência da qualidade das telhas existentes no mercado não atende aos parâmetros atuais da norma brasileira. O teste geométrico apresentou o maior número de não conformidades. A planicidade da superfície e os testes de rendimento também apresentaram desvios maiores em relação ao padrão aceitável. As não conformidades encontradas nas amostras indicaram que ocorreram falhas nos controles de fabricação do produto e na aprovação do lote que liberou o material para a produção de fábrica, resultando em produtos sem padronização.

Engineered-in material handling problems are responsible for significant unrealized value in mineral processing plants. At the root, is a lack of awareness and understanding of bulk material handling science and how important it is, especially in early design stages. Mineral processes add value to mined raw feedstock through physical and chemical transformations in unit operations, but only if the material can flow through them. Essentially, each unit operation receives a unique feedstock and produces a unique product to be collected, transported, and fed into the next unit operation. Such material-handling systems can only be expected to achieve design throughput if the system equipment is designed to the materials’ characteristics, over their full range of conditions. This requires quantification of flow properties to support the necessary customized equipment designs. Too often, assumptions or “library values” of a material’s properties are used as the basis for flow modelling and conceptual, and sometimes even detailed, design. This is especially true for hazardous materials like uranium ore, for which the additional precautions, costs, and time necessary for safe handling are often used to rationalize postponing or even bypassing testing. The surprises that often transpire in the wake of insufficient material handling consideration can have acute and costly effects. Fortunately, there is a better way.

The objective currently demanded from controlled blasting techniques is to minimize damage to the remaining rock mass while protecting the integrity of mine walls and ensuring the quality of the fragmented material for easier extraction. Finding this balance represents one of the three main challenges faced by large open-pit mines. They must achieve mine stability by complying with slope designs while also maintaining good results in terms of fragmentation and equipment productivity. The main constraints are related to unfavorable geological conditions, water presence, limited drilling diameters and available explosive products, as well as managing drilling times and blast scheduling, among others. For slope control, in addition to presplitting, blasting designs generally include buffered rows, drilled with smaller diameters, and loaded with fewer kilograms of explosives than production holes. The objective is to reduce the powder factor (kg/t) to minimize the energetic influence on the walls and attenuate damage. However, this often requires using very short charge lengths compared to the bench height (one-third or less) and reducing the pattern geometry, which increases the number of holes per ton and drilling costs. This traditional technique of reducing powder factor in the buffered rows has the main limitation of not being able to distribute the explosive energy throughout the entire column, leading to fragmentation issues mainly in the steaming area. Measurements conducted by Orica in their operations indicate at least a 30% increase in P80 particle size in the buffer zone associated with this condition. To improve energy distribution, techniques such as decking, or vertically decoupled charges can be employed. However, these techniques cannot be applied under wet conditions, and strict control over implementation quality is required to avoid deviations, which increases loading operational times and resource required. In this sense, the use of less energetic and lower-density explosives is a better alternative. On one hand, they allow for complete charge columns in the buffered rows, ensuring homogeneous fragmentation, and on the other hand, they reduce the energetic influence on the slopes, significantly decreasing vibration levels. With less energy per kilogram of explosive (MJ/kg) and less charge per linear meter (kg/m), it becomes possible to handle higher specific charges and longer explosive columns, providing flexibility in drilling and loading design options without compromising slope stability.

Com o passar dos anos observa-se uma mudança nas características mineralógicas dos minérios de ferro lavrados nas novas minas da Samarco Mineração SA. De acordo com levantamentos podem ser constatadas mudanças nos percentuais da hematita porosa, hematita especular e da goethita na constituição do concentrado de minério de ferro. Pode-se verificar uma tendência de aumento do percentual de goethita bem como do PPC (perda por calcinação) característica intrínseca ao minério. Estes fatos implicam em uma maior dificuldade da concentração em garantir a qualidade da polpa de minério bombeada para as usinas de pelotização, visto que fatores como a granulometria do minério (partículas menores que 325#) e a superfície específica são afetadas pela mineralogia. Por consequência, há uma maior dificuldade no processo de filtragem para obtenção do pellet feed com a faixa de umidade necessária para o processo de pelotamento e queima. De outra forma, o aumento do PPC dificulta o processo de secagem das pelotas no forno de pelotização, exigindo um maior aporte térmico para retirada da água residual contida nos cristais que não evaporam a 100°C. Todos estes fatores contribuem para a qualidade da pelota queimada, interferindo na sua resistência física como compressão a frio e tamboramento. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo apontar as variáveis que influenciam significativamente o tamboramento, para propor ações que melhorem o controle do processo produtivo de forma a buscar o ponto de equilíbrio entre qualidade e produção.
