THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

Continental Oil Company has spent over four years of research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining. This work included laboratory investigations of salt solution, brine flow, selective extraction of KC1 from sylvinite, and control of cavity geometry. Laboratory results were expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well mining systems were studied in the field work. The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined from a thin sylvinite ore zone in the Carlsbad Potash Basin. A two-well mining system was used for this test. The potential economic value of solution mining has been recognized for many years, and applicable United States patents date back into the past century. Principal advantages of the process over conventional mining include (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques in- stead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd - Asia Pacific Iron Ore's (formerly Portman Iron Ore Limited) K deposit (Dowd's Hill), at its Koolyanobbing operation in Western Australia, hosts enriched magnetite mineralisation below the presently mined haematite-goethite ore zone. Two distinct northwest-southeast elongated, highly magnetic anomalous bodies that dip to the north-east appear to be sourced by this deeper mineralisation. Magnetic modelling indicates significant remanent magnetisation with Qratios around 1.5, directed shallow down. The north-west anomaly is overlain by a ridge of uneconomic banded iron formation (BIF) and the present waste dump, whereas the south-east body was partly exposed during ongoing mining of overlying haematite-goethite ore. Sections of the magnetite mineralisation in this south-east anomaly were intersected previously by diamond drill holes. Review of the historic cores identified potential magnetite enrichment, with grades and mineralogy that might be amenable to beneficiation. A first-phase reverse circulation drilling program was designed to further delineate the trend and extent of the two anomalies. The following magnetite mineralisation assemblages are recognised from cores, reverse circulation (RC) drill cuttings and pit mapping of the south-east magnetic body: higher-grade magnetite-haematite ¦ goethite and magnetite ¦ pyrite and lower-grade, recrystallised magnetite-quartz (BIF), magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-talc and minor magnetite-bearing mafic schist. Disseminated specularite is locally present in theassemblages. Talc-schist and massive pyrite occur along the footwall contact. Magnetic susceptibility measured from drill chips within the magnetite-enriched zones reveals an apparent susceptibility values range of 0.2 to 1.3 SI. Preliminary results from Satmagan and Davis tube recovery analysis shows that the magnetite content in these mineralised zones correlate well with existing geophysical data and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in commission at Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but none of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California early conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was. shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. This was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottom of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts were made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type was floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for R. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Oroville ground instead of in a turbulent stream, where the dredge was wrecked during a flood, and was not repaired. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of California, showing gold-dredging areas. It is not my intention to narrate in detail the history of the early failures in gold-dredging, and the various steps in the development of the modern boat, but merely to touch upon this in a general way, and to call attention to the wide difference in capacity and operating-cost between the first successful dredge, with an actual capacity of 600 cu. yd. per day-though its rated capacity was in excess of this-and the present modern dredge with 15-cu. ft. buckets, and an average capacity of 250,000 cu. .yd. per month. The present study reports a processing route to recover metals from integrated circuits of discarded random access memory (RAM) units containing ~ 66% printed circuit boards and ~ 33% integrated circuits. The integrated circuits are manually separated, grounded, classified, and subjected to water fluidization for the effective separation of metals. The significant separation was achieved via water fluidization, and the underflow fraction was magnetically separated. The magnetic fraction was thermally exposed in a muffle furnace, and the process optimization was carried out using a Box-Behnken statistical design. The detailed characterization at subsequent steps significantly aids the understanding of metal-plastic separation and enrichment. A concentrate containing 97% metals (Fe-59%, Ni-9.5%, Cu-7.7%, Sn-13.4%, Pb-5.6%, Ag-1.6%) with 96 wt% recovery can be recovered from discarded IC units. The process pursued is simple, adaptable, and environment-friendly, and the product can be used in conventional smelters.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development by Alcan of the Trombetas deposit so a general account of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ (Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on owner-ship, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. It is impossible to consider the Trombetas deposits in isolation. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern portion of the Brazilian Shield is included and it is suggested that these deposits all formed during Tertiary time under similar conditions.

A new system for precisely counterbalancing and measuring vapor pressure operates by servomechanical principles . It was developed with the objective of determining the vapor - pressure equations of metal halides . The system is isolated from the vapor - pressure bulb by a diaphragm transducer that signals a pressure regulator to null any pressure difference that is detected . Pressure measurement and readout are continuously performed by a servomanometer , accurate to ±0.003 cm Hg for the range of 0.1 to 200 cm Hg . High response rate and sensitivity are obtained . Methods of use are described , and results for CdC1 and PbC1 , in agreement with data of other investigators , are given as examples .

Indonesia holds a significant role in the utilisation of coal resources in the world. Although the number of Indonesian coal resources and reserves do not fall into the world’s top ten, according to 2009 statistics, Indonesia is the seventh largest producer of coal with a production of 256 Mt. More than 80 per cent of this amount is sold in the export market, making Indonesia the world’s second largest coal exporter. Most of the exported coal from Indonesia is used to fulfil the needs of the Pacific market, such as Japan, Taiwan, China, among others. It is also possible to reach the Atlantic market.Along with Indonesia’s development program, until 2025 the Indonesian government has adopted a National Energy Policy that aims to reduce the role of petroleum in electricity generation and replacing it with coal. As a follow-up of the policy, since 2009 PT PLN, the state electricity company has built steam power plants throughout Indonesia as an implementation of the first stage of the Electrical Acceleration Project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. Moving forward, in 2011 PT PLN will also build the second stage of the project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. As a result of the program, the domestic need for coal is expected to increase as much as 44.8 Mt.With the increase in domestic need and decrease in the number of reserves, the Indonesian government has adopted policies to secure the domestic coal supply. A policy that may potentially be adopted by the government is the limiting of coal production, seeing the high rate of increase in Indonesian coal production. The adoption of such a policy will change the distribution map of coal in the Pacific market. Thus, this paper will evaluate the change of coal distribution patterns in the Pacific market along with the increase in Indonesian domestic needs and Indonesian adoption of policies regarding the securing of coal supplies.

The study site in northeastern Illinois underwent surface mining for coal in 1943 and was reclaimed by the state of Illinois in 1972-1973. Additional soil amendments and seed were applied to the spoil surface in 1975-1980. Previous studies in 1975-1978 had shown that the surface spoil materials and five final-cut lakes at the site were quite acidic and the lakes contained high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. Surface runoff water from monitoring plots in 1976 were only moderately acidic and the mean concentrations of most dissolved metals and sulfate in the runoff waters were less than 25% of the concentrations found in Lake B. By 1980, vegetation had become well established over most of the mined area. However, the five final-cut lakes (Lakes A-E) remained acidic. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the physical and geochemical subsurface conditions of the spoil materials, the hydrologic flow system within the spoils, and the magnitude of acidic spoil leachate migration into the lakes and into the wetland prairie north of the mine site. Lakes A, B, C, and E were still very acidic in 1980-1981 (pH range: 2.9-3.4; aridity range: 110-860 mg/L as CaCO3). Lake B had the worst water quality, with mean concentrations of dissolved aluminum, iron, manganese, and sulfate of 75, 25, 37, and 3340 mg/L, respectively. Shallow groundwaters in spoil materials around Lake B had a lower pH and about two to four times greater concentrations of aridity, aluminum, manganese, zinc, and other metals and nearly 20 times greater dissolved iron than the water in Lake B. The shallow groundwaters in undisturbed soils and bedrock 10-30 m north of the mine site spoils generally were alkaline, but did contain occasional moderately high sulfate and metal concentrations. Pumping tests and recovery tests conducted in piezometers showed hydraulic conductivities of spoil materials ranging from less than 10- to 10-5 m/s; hydraulic conductivities of natural soils and bedrock were measured between 10-10 to 10-7 m/s. Water levels in spoil materials increased rapidly in response to rainstorm events and the recession curves were relatively quick to decline, lasting only two or three days. Quick infiltration of rainfall into the spoil surface and percolation down to the water table caused a rise in groundwater levels and movement of spoil groundwater into the lakes. This groundwater component in the lake water budgets could account for most of the water quality problems occurring in the acid lakes.

The accompanying supply/demand flow diagrams and 10-year tables for mineral and fuel commodities present essential data required by government, industry, and others to formulate policies and programs that can help assure an adequate and continuing supply of mineral raw materials. The 10-year data base terminates with 1973 figures because adequate world information was not available beyond that date. Moreover, 1974 was an anomalous year with respect to prices, supply, and demand for many commodities. The selected mineral supply/demand tables and flow diagrams comprise but one "output" from the massive body of "information and data collected and com-piled by the Bureau of Mines on a continuing basis covering mineral production consumption, prices, shipments, imports, exports, and stocks, as well as industry activities in all States and abroad.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. In this study, the statistical design of experiments (DOE) was applied to study and regulate the properties of near-eutectic Al-11%Si alloys. Develop regression equations for such response variables as hardness, yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, percent elongation, total cutting force, cutting power, and tool life together with other factors which, include the percentage composition of the alloying elements, and the requisite modification (Sr) level. These equations may be analyzed quantitatively to acquire an understating of the effects which the main variables and their interactions may have on the mechanical behaviour and the machinability of the alloy under investigation. The results reveal that increasing the levels of Cu and Fe content results in an increase in hardness, yield stress, and ultimate tensile strength in both modified and non-modified alloys. On the other hand, both Cu and Fe appear to affect the percentage elongation adversely, whereas the Sr-level has a positive effect on this parameter. It was found that Sr-levels have the most significant effect on the cutting forces and cutting power followed by the content in Fe and Cu. The results also reveal that the interaction coefficients of these variables have a significant effect on tool life compared to the main independent variables. This fact may be attributed to the formation of complex insoluble phases between Cu, Fe, Si, and Al as investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) attached to an EDX analysis system. The accuracy of the regression equations in predicting the expected properties has been verified by carrying out random experiments in the range of variation of these variables.
