Determining the controls of high-grade mineralisation at Vera Nancy requires careful data collection and assessment on a global and specific deposit basis. The techniques developed over 60 years ago to analyse structure, grade and width data are just as applicable today and can be enhanced using modern geological modelling software. High ore grades at Vera Nancy are controlled by both the primary geometry of the mineralised structure and the intersections of the main mineralised veins with subordinate splay veins. The main mineralised structure dilated as a consequence of extensional tectonics while the splays acted as conduits bringing oxidising surficial fluids into mixing zones precipitating high gold grades. Near-mine exploration is focussed on identifying zones of vein flexure and splay interaction to locate the relatively small high-grade shoots. Data modelling in a 3D environment is an essential process for understanding the geometry of the system being explored.

Desta forma, o filme de escória apresenta predominantemente a fase vítrea que facilita a transferência de calor na interface molde de cobre e pele de aço em solidificação. Há uma tendência em retirar ou reduzir o teor de flúor nos fluxantes, com o objetivo de minimizar a erosão da câmara de exaustão do lingotamento contínuo, além de ser um risco potencial para a saúde e segurança e do aumento da taxa de erosão da válvula submersa. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de análise dos filmes de escória do fluxante referência e a sua versão isenta de flúor via microscópio eletrônico de varredura e microscópio óptico de luz polarizada. Mais resultados como difratometria de raios-X e análises térmicas também complementam esta análise assim como algumas características físico-químicas dos produtos em questão.

Recent advancements in understanding the detonation process are noteworthy, but they are still based on somewhat hypothetical situations. The actual variables that are essential parts of normal blasting practice have not yet been taken into account in such treatments. These include the various initiation practices employed to detonate a column of explosive, from single point initiation to multi-point initiation in blast holes, and the effect on detonation characteristics of both detonators and explosives under multi-deck and multi-hole blasting conditions. The in-the-hole velocity of detonation (VOD) of an industrial explosive is dependent on explosive’s charge diameter and blasthole diameter. The relationship between blasthole diameter and VOD provides a fundamental guideline to the rate of energy conversion and energy release within the detonation front on the interaction of explosives with the confining medium.The in-the-hole VOD of explosives was measured at four experimental sites in India for different blasthole diameters, ie 150 mm to 311 mm, but for identical explosive composition being same particle size, density, viscosity and loaded into blastholes with the same degree of confinement. The results of the studies demonstrated that there is definite relationship in in-the-hole VOD of the explosive and the diameter of the blast hole. The study also confirmed that the explosives initiated with concentrated boosters yielded higher VOD in comparison to those explosives that were initiated with multi-point priming. The measured increase in VOD of explosives for increasing diameter of holes was up to 24 per cent. The rate of change in in-the-hole VOD of explosives increases with increasing blasthole diameter. It can be further stated that the in-the-hole VOD of the explosive reaches a fairly constant value after reaching a limiting/threshold diameter of 311 mm.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. Vermiculites are secondary minerals formed by the: alteration of biotite and philogopite mica and are associated with basic rocks such as dunites, serpentines, and pyroxenites. Vermiculite was first described by T. H. Webb in 1824. It remained a mineralogical curiosity until 1913, when the first commercial deposit was discovered in the Turrett mining district of Colorado. Expanded or exfoliated vermiculite was first marketed in 1915 from a deposit in this district 5 miles southeast of Hecla, Colo. This activity was brief, but successful and continuous commercial development began in 1921 in Montana. THE investigation herein described had its beginning in the chemical laboratory of the Department of the Interior, Calgary. After the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Alberta in 1930, the laboratory was closed and the investigation discontinued, but in 1933, with the permission of the Director of the Mines Branch, the work was again taken up and brought to completion. OBJECT OF THE INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation as originally planned may be stated as follows : (1) To determine the chemical composition of the limestone formation underlying Turner Valley gas field. (2) To identify 'beds' in the limestone, if such existed, with definitecharacteristics which would mark them from immediately overlying and underlying measures. (3) To relate information acquired on the composition of the limestone to the occurrence of oil and gas in the particular section examined. Definite information was lacking as to the exact chemical composition of the limestone and of its variations in composition at various depths. The formation was generally referred to in the field as the 'dolomitic' limestone, but the depth to which the dolomitized zone extended and the degree to which the limestone generally had become dolomitized were not known. Jn the drilling and logging of wells, the recognition of suitable 'markers' in the various formations is a matter of some importance. Markers are generally relatively small but widespread members of a formation, which have some characteristic property, of colour, composition, or form, by which they may be identified, and with them, consequently, the formation of which they form a part. In the formations above the limestone in Turner Valley, a number of well defined and easily recognized markers are known to geologists, drillers, and others interested in the field. Many of these markers Hand out in sharp contrast to adjoining measures and are therefore easily recognized; in others, the contrast is less sharp, with consequent difficulty in identification.

Combustible materials, when burned, produce toxic gases and smoke, which may vary dramatically from one material to another, with resultant different total toxicity and smoke obscuration levels. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents smoke property data acquired for a variety of mine combustibles and shows that there exists a correlation between the smoke properties, the relative toxicity, and the smoke obscuration levels of those combustibles tested. These correlations can be used to devise simple, standard tests for determining the toxic and smoke obscuration hazards of mine materials during fire.

To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These tests are described in Schedule 1-G4/ (explosives) and Schedule 26A5/ (blasting devices). An explosive or blasting device that passes the appropriate tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is subject to continuous revision, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines to publish periodically the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. The present circular gives all explosives and blasting devices on the active permissible list as of December 31, 1957, and shows all changes, additions, and transfers in that list between December 31, 1951,6/ and December 31, 1957.

The zinc industry is dominated by the electrolytic zinc (EZ) process. The EZ process has a low tolerance for impurities, resulting in tight concentrate specifications. Many mining companies sacrifice zinc recovery in order to meet smelter specifications. Some have ore-bodies that cannot be economically developed because too much metal has to be sacrificed, or it is just not possible to meet the specification. The BUKA Zinc Process (BZP) has been developed as a method of producing high-quality zinc from a wide range of concentrates. It can have lower capital and operating costs than the conventional zinc and lead production routes. Advantages accrue from increases in metal recovery during concentrating, smelting and refining; the elimination of most of the capital and operating costs associated with lead smelting; reduced transport costs; lower zinc refining costs; reduced refinery residue disposal costs; and reduced future environmental liabilities. This paper describes results of testwork that has been undertaken to demonstrate the viability of the BZP on both test rig and laboratory-bench scale.

This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.

"Due to the use of outdated mining technology or room and pillar mining process in small coal mines, the coal recovery ratio is only 10% - 25%. In many regions of China: the damage area caused by the small coal mines amounted to nearly one hundred square kilometers. Therefore, special mining techniques must be taken to reclaim the wasted resource in disturbed coal areas. This paper focuses on the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and abandoned gateroad (AG) distribution in in the abandoned area of Cui Jiazhai Coal Mine in northwestern China. On the basis of three-dimensional geological model, FLAC- 3D numerical simulation was employed. The abutment pressure distribution was simulated when the panel face passed through the disturbed areas. The proper angle of the inclined face was analyzed when the panel face passed through the abandoned gateroads. The results show that the head end of the face should be 13-20m ahead of the tail end. The pillars on both sides of abandoned gateroads had not been damaged at the same time, and no large-area stress concentration occurred above the main roof. Therefore, the coal reserves of disturbed areas can be successfully recovered by using underground longwall mining. INTRODUCTIONDuring the 70-90's, there were a lot of small coal mines in China. Due to their disordered mining, most of the small coal mines left a great many abandoned gateroads (defined as AG in this paper) and a large area of damage coal seam. In these type of coalfields, there exist many mining risk issues, including nonuniform stress in the overburden, flooding and hazardous gases accumulated in the gob. So how to lay out a longwall panel and successfully mining under this type of abandoned small mines is a big issue nowadays in China.As mentioned above, longwall panel is being performed in the damaged coal seams in order to increase recovery of coal reserves (Wang, 2009). However, the abandoned geteroads intersect to each other all around the area. So a series of production issues arose while the panel face is passing through these AG. Gang and Gong (2015) analyzed the roof stability and abutment pressure distribution during the face was passing those AG that were parallel and inclined to the faceline. Xie, et al. (2015) proposed the ground control mechanism by passing the AG in top-coal caving longwall mining. He recommended to stop the face advance until the roof is over, using high strength bolts and cable bolts, and grouting consolidation. This paper studies the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and AG distribution in damage coal seams. Theoretical analysis and field observation were conducted to determine the overburden movement when the face was advancing under the AG. The pillar between face and parallel AG changes from elastic to plastic and eventually to the residual supporting status. All these three status was combined with the roof structure to establish the theoretical model to calculate the shield support capacity. Numerical modeling was employed to simulate the pillar stability and determine the abutment pressure distribution as the face inclined to the AG during longwall mining."

Generally sintering is focused on the bonding of particles at high temperatures; possibly with simultaneous densification. However, an important aspect of sintering occurs during heating at relatively low temperatures where polymer processing aids are removed via control of the atmosphere, heating rate, or hold time at intennediate temperatures. New insights into burnout processes show impact from the polymenype, particle size, amount of polymer, atmosphere, part geometry, and thermal profile. This presentation focuses on the key parameters to demonstrate improved mechanical property levels are available in traditional powder metallurgy alloys by proper selection of the processing polymer and proper care in its thermal extraction. The focus is on mechanical property, where gains up to 40% are demonstrated due 10 changes in the processing polymer. Further, atmosphere control during polymer burnout provides a benefit by allowing formation of desirable carbonitrides, giving strength levels over 3 GPa (over 400 kpsi). Insight is? gleaned from powder injection molding, where high polymer contents mandate proper processing control.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

I NDUSTRIAL explosives, as distinguished from military explosives, include high explosives and blasting powder. The high explosives which are best known are straight dynamite, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamite and permissibles. There are two kinds of blasting powder, saltpetre blasting powder and nitrate of soda blasting powder. Blasting powders are mechanical mixtures of nitrate of potash or nitrate of soda with sulfur and charcoal, highly compressed, granulated and glazed. They ignite from a spark and burn with relative slowness, the rate of burning and hence the rate of conversion into gases depending upon the size of the granulation and upon the degree of. confinement under which the powder is placed. High explosives, on the other hand, are chemical compounds which detonate; that is, when the explosive is subjected to a violent shock, provided in practice by a blasting cap or an electric blasting cap, the molecule of the essential ingredient, usually nitroglycerin, is disrupted and the energy and heat released cause any other explosive ingredients which may be present, such as ammoniuin nitrate or T.N.T., to decompose with a resultant evolution of gases at an extremely rapid rate varying from 6000 to 20,000 ft. per second.

The results of extensive field tests of a new and powerful method of hard rock excavation are presented in this report.* The method, known by the acronym REAM (Rapid Excavation and Mining), employs high velocity, smooth bore cannons to efficiently deliver energy to the rock and has been demonstrated for underground tunneling, drilling, surface benching, scaling, and secondary breakage in hard granitic rock at the Hope Valley Mine test site in California. Solid projectiles made from inexpensive materials such as concrete or steel, and weighing from 8 to 12 pounds, are launched by conventional high speed cannons and impact the rock at velocities of 5000 feet per second--an impact energy of about 4 million foot pounds (Figure 1). The energy applied at peak pressures of nearly 2 million psi over a period of tens of microseconds breaks down the rock by a complex mechanism of crushing, spalling, and initiation and propagation of fractures produced by the interaction of successive impacts and free surfaces. The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. announced plans to raise June ingot prices by 4 cents to 57 cents per pound. Producers? April value for 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot was at 53 cents per pound. Domestic merchants last month were quoting the metal at 48-49 cents per pound. Primary aluminum producers began restarting production facilities following the settlement of the coal strike. Noranda Aluminum Inc. recalled workers to prepare potlines for production at its plant at New Madrid, Mo., which had closed February 14, 1978 due to the shortage of coal. Eastalco Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Frederick, Md. smelter where production had been cut by 30 percent. Anaconda Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Sebree, Ky. smelter.

New GSP Trade Status Approved.--President Carter, by Executive Order effective March 30, has approved Generalized System of Preference treatment for imports of nonferrous metal products and other imports from Ecuador, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Venezuela. As of May 2, Afghanistan and Ethiopia will be taken off GSP status. Under the Generalized System of Preferences, certain imports from developing countries are provided duty-free treatment. A country can lose its GSP status if its shipments of the product exceed $41.9 million or more than 50% of total U.S. imports during the preceding year. However, the President can waive the 50% rule in cases where total U.S. imports of an item in 1979 were less than $1 million. Certain nonferrous imports from Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Zambia are already covered by GSP. Hearings April 10 on International Tin Agreement.--The Fifth International Tin Agreement of which the United States is a signatory, which entered into force on July 1, 1976, will expire on June 30, 1981. A negotiating conference for a Sixth International Tin Agreement will be held under auspices of the United Nations at Geneva from April 14 to May 16, 1980.

Workers at the Consolidated Aluminum Corp. primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, LA walked out at midnight March 31 when their contract expired. Management personnel operated the smelter and prebaked carbon anode facilities until an agreement for a new 3-year contract was reached April 18. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) began operations at its can recycling facility at Taylor, MS. The facility can process 3 million pounds per month of aluminum and steel cans. Alcoa announced plans to increase the capacity of its aluminum paste and flake production plant at Logan's Ferry, PA by 50 percent. Completion was scheduled for mid-1980.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a feasibility study and designed an operational system for consolidating waste coal sludge in a 110-acre pond by applying direct current between buried and floating electrodes. Consolidation would reduce the sludge to half its present volume, there-by extending the working life of the pond as well as creating a safe, stable impoundment. The project was conducted by the Bureau under an agreement with the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), located near Centralia, WA. Part 1 of this report, published as Report of Investigation 8666 in 1982, covers the results of laboratory tests at the Bureau's Spokane Research Center and of a small-scale field test at WIDeO's coal preparation plant. Test results show the process is efficient and cost-effective when power is applied at low current density. Part 2 (this paper) describes a detailed design for an electrokinetic system to dewater WIDCO's 110-acre pond with a 27.4-acre electrode array. Densification of the inactive sludge pond will require 3.6 yr of treatment for a total cost of $1,450,000. The study and design are site specific, but design procedures and analyses are sufficiently detailed to serve as a guide for applying the process to any sludge pond.
