The pore pressure must be included in any discussion of the state of stress within a rock. Rock cylinders at elevated stress levels, loaded uniaxially to a stress less than the yield strength, can be fractured by holding the constraints constant and increasing the pore fluid pressure. This can be described in terms of the Mohr envelopes using effective stresses. The effective stress concept can simplify data with various confining and pore pressures. When the pore and confining pressures are equal, the pore pressure appears to be totally effective in reducing the confining pressure effects. The area over which the pore pressure acts has been the subject of some prior discussions. Terzaghi 1 defined boundary porosity as ". . . the ratio of that part of the area of the potential surface which is in contact with the interstitial liquid and the total area of this surface." His method of calculation included a discussion of splitting failure which was objected to by Mr. Kessler, National Bureau of Standards. The values calculated by Terzaghi were close to unity. Leliavsky,2 using unjacketed cement cores, reported that the interstitial fluid pressure appeared to act upon about 92% of the surface of failure. He concluded: "The fraction of the area of cross-section over which the internal pressure acts can therefore have nothing to do with ordinary porosity, and the results of the experiments tend to support Professor Terzaghi's views." In 1947 Balmer3 determined the boundary porosity of concrete when the confining and pore pressures were equal. He also found values close to unity. Detailed operating results on processing seven coals having moisture ranging from 24 to 62 pct, formulas and data for calculating performance of large units, and general conclusions on the problem of drying fine coal are presented.

There are three main oil areas in Bolivia (Fig. 1) although so far only one has yielded petroleum in commercial quantities. The Sub-Andean zone is along the easternmost ranges of the Andes, bordering the large eastern and northeastern lowlands. It extends from the Peruvian frontier, north of Lake Titicaca in a southeasterly direction towards the city of Santa Cruz and from there southward to the Argentine border. This zone forms a belt about 1200 km. long by 100 km. wide, and comprises a series of parallel, very rugged, low ranges. Oil has been known and utilized by the natives in these regions since colonial times, from the large number of seepages, which in modern times have led to the discovery of many fields. The second oil zone of Bolivia lies along the eastern and southern borders of Lake Titicaca, on the Andean high plateau, at an average altitude of 13,000 ft. above sea level. It comprises an area of approximately one million hectares (2,470,000 acres). Several seepages are known here, but little development has taken place, because of the difficulties encountered, as the greater part of the territory is covered by volcanic tuffs and ashes, which conceal the structure underneath. The third area is called the "Central zone," and is in the heart of the country, in the Department of Cochabamba, covering approximately five million hectares (12,350,000 acres). This area consists mainly of broad valleys flanked by low rolling ranges. Natural seepages are not known to exist, but there are secondary evidences of the presence of oil. The outcropping rocks are mainly Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian sandstones and shales). Albertite and other forms of polymerized petroleum have been found in this region. Of these three main oil areas, only the first one is at present productive on a small commercial scale. This zone, developed almost exclusively by the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, is divided from south to north into the following local fields: 1. Fuel-oil, natural gas and coke oven gas, producing the higher temperatures of open-hearth current practice, have been gradually displacing producer gas the lowest cost fuel for open hearth operations. The lower temperatures of combusts on products from producer gas is caused by nitrogen dilution. Practical Application of Combustion Thermochemistry One pound of carbon burned to CO produces 3,960 B.T.U. and one pound of carbon burned to C02 produces 14,140 B.T.U. The second unit of oxygen uniting with gasified carbon (CO) produces (14,140 - 3,960) 10,180 B.T.U. which is (10,180 - 3,960) 6,220 B.T.U. more heat than produced by the first unit of oxygen forming CO by uniting with solid carbon. A review of the relative combustion heating values of commercial gaseous fuels reveals CO requires a minimum of air for combustion and because of minimum nitrogen dilution and the high thermal release from CO higher temperature combustion products are produced from CO than from natural gas or from coke-oven gas under similar combustion conditions. Inert nitrogen diluent lowers the calorific value of fuel gas and its diluting effect is cumulative in lowering the temperature of the products of total combustion. It is not only logical but practical in partial combustion, converting bituminous coal to gas, to generate the gas with reduced nitrogen dilution.

The rock salt deposits of the U. S. occur in five major basins: 1) the Eastern Basin (which includes parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Ontario) ; 2) the Gulf Coast Basin (the northern rim of which includes parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, while its southern rim includes parts of the Isthmus of Tehuampetic and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico), 3) the Southwestern Salt Basin (which includes parts of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico), 4) the Williston Basin (which under- lies parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan), and 5) the Green River Basin (whose periphery underlies parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado). The greatest salt production in the U. S. is obtained from the Eastern Basin,-particularly from the areas of Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. In 1958 the salt production from these areas amounted to 8.7 million tons or 35.3 pct of the combined total produced in the U. S. and Canada. Of the 24,286,000 tons produced by Canada and the United States, 6,443,000 tons were in the form of rock salt from dry mining, while 17,843,000 tons were produced from wells in the form of artificial brine, the result of dissolving the rock salt formation by fresh water. ZINC is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd' first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (y phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Vogel2 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined.. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 600 C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140° C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270° C. Sander and Meissner4 decidedly modified the limits of they phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,5 utilizing dynamic hardness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400° to 500° C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5

Kaolin deposits in Georgia lie in a belt that stretches across the central part of the state from Alabama to South Carolina. In 1977 the state's kaolin production was an estimated 4.58 million tons (5.05 million st) or 77% of US production. While mining methods vary, stripping contractor W. F. (Billy) Jackson of Wrightsville, Ga., depends on a fleet of 18 twin-engine elevating scrapers to move the hulk of overburden and clay. Owner Billy Jackson explains that the soil in this part of the state is perfect for scraper operation; overburden ranges from Georgia red clay to a sandy gumbo material. Apart from some shale, very little rock is encountered, thus eliminating any blasting re¬quirement. Most of the material can be removed with cutting edge teeth or with drop center blades.

A suspension electrolysis method has been developed which enabled a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrate and simultaneously oxidized sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigation was performed in a laboratory-scale electrolytic cell, where the zinc sulfide concentrate particles (chemical composition in weight percent: 61.1% Zn, 2.3% Fe, 30.6% S, 3.4% SiO2 were suspended with or without graphite powder in a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. The main parts of the cylindrical electrolytic cell are shown in [Fig. 1]. The cathode (1), a rod of aluminum, is set at the center of the cell. PROPERTY LOCATION Located in the Copper Creek area of the Galiuro Mountains, the Old Reliable is on ground first claimed for mineral value during the Civil War. The deposit was mined sporatically from 1880 to 1919 and again in 1953 and 1954, with a total of about 30,000 tons of ore removed. The ore body is a near vertical breccia pipe containing approximately 4,000,000 tons of 0.80% copper with mineralization occuring as chalcocite, chalcopyrite, malachite, chalcanthite, and chrysocolla. The host rocks are extrusive lavas of cretaceous age which were intruded and mineralized by Copper Creek Granodiorite, which is Laramide in age. The ore zone, which occurs on the toe of a ridge, is about 300 feet by 600 feet in plan, with the bulk of the deposit extending from the surface to a depth of 500 feet.

THE sheet-ground deposits of the TriState district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to 11 ft.)-rather flat, with an easy dip to the west-and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. DEVELOPING TRACTORS AND TRAILERS A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Fig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½ -in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the springs could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dual. After four months of use, the tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

Michigan reports another record year. Its production of 18,605,000 bbl. exceeds any previous year's total and is 2,000,000 bbl. over 1937, the previous record year. Production in 1938 brings the accumulated total for the state to a little over 100,000,000 bbl. It has taken 14 years to reach this accumulative figure, which would meet the needs of our country for about one month. Twelve new oil and gas fields were opened in 1938 and 978 tests for oil and gas were completed, of which 566 were oil wells, 25 gas wells and 387 dry holes. The new oil discovered is probably about equal to the oil produced during the year. Activities in 1938 The Temple field, Clare County, was the discovery of the year. Since July, 46 wells have been completed, and although not yet outlined it appears that more than 2000 acres have been proved for production from the Monroe of Devonian age, at a depth of 3900 ft. This discovery is the result of a wildcat test along a trend northwestward from the older fields of the central basin. The Edenville pool, Midland County, ranks second among the new fields. Thirty-five producing wells have been drilled to the Dundee at 3800 feet. The surprise development was in southwestern Alichigan, Allegan and Van Buren Counties, where six new Traverse lime pools were opened with a daily production of about 8000 bbl. at the end of the year. This is the first consistent Traverse production in the state and is about 100 miles southwest of the producing areas of the central basin. These fields have had a rapid development because of the shallow depths, which range from 900 to 1500 ft. Bloomingdale, Van Buren County, had a town-lot boom, and 72 wells have been drilled there since August 1938. Small operators from many states have been attracted to this shallow territory, and the coming year will see much drilling in these and surrounding counties. The Buckeye field, Gladwin County, led the state in amount of oil produced. Its total of over 7,000,000 bbl. was far ahead of that of any other pool.

Discussion of the paper of Dorsey A. Lyon and Robert M. Keeney, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2117 to 2149. C. D. WOODWARD, Butte, Mont.:-We constructed a small blast furnace, and used first carbon electrodes and an alternating current of about 50 to 75 volts. We were able to smelt the material which was fed to the furnace, but we did not carry on experiments far enough to see just exactly what the power consumption was and compare it with the amount of material treated. We found that the blast seemed to help materially in reducing our charge and cutting down our power consumption. There were several other experiments tried at the time, and I do not call to mind now just what they were. We were trying to do away with the carbon electrode and replace it with an iron one, and it also seems to me we tried to use the ore for an electrode; but I believe that the electric furnace in the reducing end is simply a question of British thermal units per kilowatt-hour compared with British thermal units in a pound of coke. Now, if a pound of coke costs us 0.5 c. and a kilowatt-hour costs us in the neighborhood of 1.5 c., I think there is a big advantage in using coke instead of the electrical current for copper reducing. We tried steam, and a number of other methods, to throw copper down, but it has been some time ago and I am not very familiar with them now. The outlook of the experiments did not seem to be very promising, and we took it more as a thermal problem than an electrical one. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-Mr. Woodward has spoken of the question as a thermal problem. I would call attention to the fact that electric furnaces usually utilize the heat of the electric current at from four to ten times the efficiency with which the heat generated by fuel is utilized; so it will not do simply to compare by thermal units generated. Your total thermal units may cost much less from coke than from electricity, yet you will find the electrically generated thermal units utilized in a properly designed furnace from three to ten times more efficiently than in the combustion furnace. You must make that allowance is comparing the cost of thermal units generated electrically and thermal units from coke.

The question of' providing training for miners in the United States has been answered by Public Law 95-164, which stipulates not only that the mine operator will provide training, but generally how much and what material will be covered. At an operation employing 500 miners, the eight-hour refresher training requirement will necessitate an annual investment of over two man-years in labor, a figure that does not include the time spent in training new hires and job transfers. Such an investment can and should be cost effective, while catering to miners' needs.

With the increasing industrial use of the method of transporting solids by fluids through pipes, a better understanding of the basic mechanics of a solid-liquid pipe flow system is essential. In this study the phenomenon of incipient motion of solid particles resting in a sediment bed on the bottom of a pipe is investigated. Since a system would fail to operate at the designed solid-liquid flow condition if it was not capable of operating through the transient initial flow phase, information concerning the starting transient is of great interest. An objective definition of incipient particle motion, derived from energy considerations, is first proposed. Using this the critical state is defined to describe the flow condition during which a solid particle can at least temporarily escape the sediment bed and move in the liquid. Postulated also in this study is that the condition of incipient motion can be reasonably well predicted by a consideration of particle equilibrium in a direction normal to the pipe axis. The incipient condition is considered to occur at the instant the force between the bed and the particle, normal to the pipe axis, is zero. Experimental measurements of incipient conditions are obtained for water flowing through a horizontal pipe with sand sediment beds of different thickness. These are compared to predicted values with good agreement.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environmental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in application to mining exploration programs is collected annually as part of a continuing service to the mining and petroleum industries. The data for mining geophysical activity in 1966 has been made available to SME by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. This data is based on 288 voluntary responses for a return of 59% to 487 questionnaires that were circulated among worldwide mining companies, universities, and government institutions that conduct or utilize mining geophysical surveys or carry out allied research efforts. This data is herein published in condensed form with the permission of the SEG.

DEPLETION of anthracite resources in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, has forced the recovery of coal tracts formerly considered unminable. Chief among these are the large areas of outcrop coal lying on a heavy pitch on the mountain sides, abandoned thirty or forty years ago as too costly and too hazardous to mine. The old companies, in many instances, stopped their chambers 80 or 100 ft. hack from the actual outcrop, and then dropped back another 100 ft. before starting to rob the pillars, thus leaving large areas of coal. Recovery of this coal naturally leads to mining hazards not encountered years ago. The first step is to sink a slope from the surface with the pitch of the vein, and then drive counters across the pitch as close to the robbed area as proper protection for the lower side of the -counter will permit. Next, the old chambers are advanced or new ones driven in the solid, as the conditions require. As these chambers approach the outcrop the real safety work begins-that of preventing the miner from being buried or locked in by an avalanche of mud.
