If one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. IN determining the mechanism responsible for sintering, the most direct procedure available is the comparison of the observed time and temperature dependence of the process with the dependence to be expected upon the basis of each conceivable mechanism. This was done by Kuczynskil who, in treating the mechanism of surface diffusion, postulated, in effect, that the concentration gradient of vacancies is different from zero only within the neck. This procedure was recently questioned by Cabrera' who assumed, on the contrary, that diffusion occurs only in the region outside the neck. A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 1 l/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude.

In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

The failure of finely-divided sulfide particles to respond to flotation has resulted in a significant loss of our natural resources. As mentioned by Professor Arbiter, the overall recovery of copper from porphyry copper ores is generally between 80 and 85 percent. The recovery of copper sulfides from these ores is about 90 percent, the difference in these recoveries being due to failure of oxide copper minerals to respond to flotation. The 10-percent loss of sulfide copper has not been studied. Losses are known to be in the fractions finer than 74 microns, but the sizes that are not responding to flotation have not been established. In the case of molybdenite, however, it is known that particles finer than about five microns are not recovered. Work in other systems, notably the hematite-quartz system, has shown that good flotation of very fine particles from natural ores is possible (1, 2). The size distribution of one ore that was researched is given in Table 1, and as shown, approximately 50 percent of the ore was finer than 10 microns. Flotation experiments were conducted with this ore, which contained 45 percent iron, utilizing octyl hydroxamate as collector and without any desliming (1). The results of these experiments are presented in Table 2. From the standpoint of mechanisms of collector adsorption, similarities exist between those occurring in the hydroxamate-hematite system and many xanthate-sulfide systems. .This is, multilayers of ferric hydroxamate are present on hematite under flotation conditions (1,3).

While the old-time melter was satisfied to bring his metal out in the desired condition, and therefore took care to have the slag liquid enough, the importance of a thorough knowledge of the slag is at present recognized in all up-to-date melting-shops. Formerly slag or cinder was considered a necessary evil, accumulating in some mysterious way wherever a man was striving to produce a clean metal. Nowadays we deliberately aim at a well-defined slag, which varies with the nature of the process and the product. In steel-making we need slag for two main purposes, namely, refining and protecting the metal. To refine metal, essentially oxidizing and reducing processes are required, while to protect the metal we need a reducing or, still better, a neutral atmosphere. Although an absolutely neutral condition between steel, on one side, and the containing vessel and the slag, on the other, is an imaginary conception, the various furnaces in use for the production of liquid steel maybe arranged with respect to the attainment of this ideal in about the following order of merit: converter, open-hearth, crucible, and electric furnace. In dealing with the subject we will find it convenient to avail ourselves of the terms of physical chemistry, which yield a simple conception of the matter and an expedient way of expression. Slag and metal at large are not mixable with each other, and we will therefore call them the two " immiscible phases," though there are certain compounds which dissolve in both phases under conditions to be considered later. Oil companies operating in foreign countries have made increased use during 1930 of cooperative agreements in prospecting unproven territory and in developing proven territory. A considerable proportion of the existing foreign fields are held under single ownership and have been developed as units. The operating companies seek to maintain this condition by acquiring land in large blocks or by merging smaller concessions under unit operating agreements. Your committee has secured a number of reports on foreign non-competitive operations and a valuable formal paper which deals with the Golden Lane of Mexico.l 0. B. Knight has drawn some valuable comparisons concerning costs of development and ultimate production between a certain competitive area and another noncompetitive area along that strip of rich producing territory. After discussing details of production, numbers of wells and cost of drilling and production, he concludes that the 93,700,000 bbl. of competitive oil will have cost $0.193 per barrel as compared to 85,700,000 bbl. of noncompetitive oil at $0.059 per barrel. The saving of $0.134 per barrel amounts in round figures to $11,500,000, which is 21/2 times the total cost of developing the non-competitive block. The cost for drilling and development of the two areas of 3550 acres which Mr. Knight compares was $18,150,000 under competitive and $4,760,000 under noncompetitive conditions. The estimated ultimate production of the competitive 3550 acres is expected to reach 93,700,000 bbl., or 8,000,000 bbl. above the noncompetitive block. Under ordinary production methods it is to be expected that a noncompetitive area will yield less oil per unit area than will a similar competitive area, because of closer spacing and more rapid extraction in the latter case. The advantage of noncompetitive conditions, in this regard, is that the undivided ownership makes it possible to apply repressuring as a production method fairly early in the life of the field and thus, in the end, to vastly increase the yield. The mechanism by which an electrical potential difference is developed between two salt solutions separated by shale is shown to be a consequence of the electrical double layer of the shale surfaces. A mathematical derivation is presented to show -the dependence of the potential on the shale characteristic.? and on the concentration of the salt solutions. The equations developed describe adequately the potential-concentration behavior of a long shale core. The equations also describe the variation of potential of sand-shale mixtures with variation of clay content. Ion adsorption i* an important factor in he developments of the surface charge on the shale. and electrical resistivity and ion transference number data are emlployed to estimate the increase of surface charge with concentration. Since the potential is shown to be dependent on the characteristics of the particular .system. water salinities estimated from the potential log by previously proposed methods may be low in some rase;. INTRODUCTION That the electric well log exists today may he attributed to the ingenuity of the Schlumberger brothers who adapted to the logging of wells techniques which were originally developed as surface prospecting methods for the location of ore bodies Empirically it was found that the potential curve of the electric log usually gave values for clean sands which were negative with respect to the values for shales. It was suggested that the potential was responsive to porosity. It was postulated in explanation? that the potential was the sum of a streaming potential, which differed for sands and shales, and of an "electro-chemical" potential of undetermined origin. Mounce and Rust in 1943 showed that the streaming potential is small in most cases and that the potential is generated by a process in which shale and a salinity difference play-essential party. Dickey.:' in the same year, concluded that the potential is dependent upon adsorptive properties of reservoir rock. IN western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquén, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. CHARACTER OF SOLID BITUMENS The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquén are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis: [CONSTITUENTS PER CENT Hydrogen6.8 Carbon82.4 Nit.rogenI.6 Oxygen2.7 Sulphur2.2 Ash4.3 100.0] In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbón. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-conchoidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquén. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens, are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Esperanza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

THE removal of lead by fire refining methods from copper of electrolytic quality is growing in importance. Particularly is this true of the refining of secondary copper and copper cathodes obtained from electrolytic cells where lead is used as the anode material, as in the electrolysis of ore-leaching solutions and foul electrolyte. When investigating the removal of small amounts of lead from molten copper in a reverberatory furnace during the refining of secondary copper of otherwise electrolytic copper quality,1 it was found necessary first to FIG. 1.-SAMPLING DEVICE. know something about the distribution of the lead throughout the bath. The authors believe that it is not generally known how small amounts of lead as an impurity are distributed in a molten copper bath; that is, whether the lead is concentrated at the bottom or at the top, or whether it occurs more or less uniformly throughout the bath. The data contained in this report may help, therefore, in the development of a satis-factory fire refining method for the removal of this obstinate element from a molten copper bath.

INTRODUCTION ACID mine-water drainage is a serious problem with many mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district. Particularly is this true when large volumes must be considered in unwatering old mines that have refilled with water which has dissolved the products of oxidation and has become chalybeate in character. The experiences discussed in this paper have to do specifically with the unwatering of a comparatively small area west of the town of Baxter Springs, Kans., where the pumping job was complicated by water of this type and where the extremely high sulphate content particularly effected that phase of mine drainage having to do with stream pollution. LOCATION, GEOLOGY AND HISTORY The Baxter Springs area of the Tri-State mining field is situated just west of the town of Baxter Springs and is a northeasterly extension of the main mineralized zones of the Oklahoma part of the district (Fig I). The mining area is traversed with well defined shear zones which provide easy circulation of ground waters and the ore bodies are found along these shear zones as localized enrichments wherever the structural conditions are favorable (Fig 2). The ore-bearing strata is Mississippian with an overlain capping of shale of Pennsylvanian age. This shale strata carries much pyrite and marcasite at its base and undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the subsequent high iron content of the water. The area originally contained a sulphide water which discharged as an artesian flow in springs within the town and gave Baxter Springs its name. These springs were famed for many years for their mineral water. This original sulphide water was first removed about 1917 and active mining was carried on west of the town during subsequent high metal price periods. Many small mines were opened, with each localized enrichment becoming a separate mine. During the depression mining ceased and all mines in the west Baxter area were allowed to flood. No serious effort was made to again unwater until higher prices caused from the demand for metal for World War II once more focused attention on this part of the field. ORIGINAL MINING RESULTS IN OXIDATION As plans for unwatering progressed, it soon developed that the mine-water pools had become strongly acid in character and carried large amounts of sulphates in solution. This occurred in the following way. When the original sulphide water was removed, shafts sunk, and mining carried on over a number of years, ferrous sulphate was formed by the spontaneous oxidation of the pyrite beds in contact with air admitted through churn-drill holes and mine openings. These products of oxidation can be seen today in the old mines of the district as crusts of crystalline sulphates

VEINS of asphalt fill and seal vertical fault fissures at the surface of a large domal structure near Bejucal, Havana Province (about 19 miles south of Havana), so this structure was chosen, by Barnabas Bryan, for the drilling of a well on the theory that oil had risen from below the Cretaceous and had entered the porous sands of the Upper Cretaceous, which outcrop in three places within a radius of 12 miles. The asphalt in these fault fissures, he contended, had sealed them and thereby prevented further dissipation of the oil. Furthermore, he found, in the asphalt, specimens of sand and lime that were indications of its upward migratory character. Ralph Arnold, who discovered the Upper Cretaceous sand saturated with oil in the outcrop near Mariel, in Pinar del Rio Province, has compared the Bejucal structure with the Santa Maria field in California. The surface rock of the structure is Oligocene limestone and shales, thin, bedded and well stratified. This formation has, heretofore, been assigned to the Eocene with a thickness of 3000 ft. and locally called the Nazareno formation. Paleontologic examination of well cuttings, however, has disclosed Oligocene fossils at a depth of 1142 ft. and Upper Cretaceous fossils at a depth of 1541 ft., leaving approximately 400 ft. of very parenthetical Eocene. Whether there is any Eocene in this structure has not been determined.

The following paragraphs have been extracted from a recent publication of the U. S. Department of Commerce; Miscellaneous Series, No. 65, " German Trade' and the War, " which portrays the industrial, commercial and economic conditions of Germany, at the present time, and has been compiled largely from sources published in Germany. Iron and Steel The Krupp company, the greatest of the German munition works, was faced at the outbreak of the War with the disappearance of its great international business, but this was amply compensated by orders from Germany and her allies, and the activity of the company has been greatly extended. The general meeting of December 1914, voted an increase in the capital to 250,000,000 marks. The gross profits of the company, amounting to 61,900,000 marks in 1912-13, have been more than doubled during the war. The gross profits were 128,260,000 marks in 1914-15 and 143,360,000 in 1915-16. Large sums have been written off; 10,000,000 marks have been placed in the pension fund during the war, and 5,000,000 were appropriated for workmen's dwellings in 1915. Thirteen million marks have been devoted to war assistance in the last three years. The assets of the company were valued at 967,000,000 marks at the end of 1916. For the year 1916-17, the company paid a dividend of only 10 per cent., but set aside 85,425,000 marks for depreciation. The Bismarckhütte in Upper Silesia, capitalized at 16,000,000 marks, with a bonded indebtedness of 7,907,500 marks in 1913-14, reported 3,912,000 marks of net revenue from operation for that year. During the three years of war the revenue increased successively to 8,077,000, 11,805,000, and 16,994,000 marks. While the capital remained unchanged, and the bonded indebtedness was but slightly reduced, the dividends paid during the last four years were increased from 9 per cent. in 1913-14 to 15, 25, and 30 per cent. during the war. During the year 1916-17 the amount written off, chiefly on the works and plant account, was 10,553,000 marks, or nearly as much as the total set aside during the three preceding years. The turnover for that year reached a sum many times the amount of the capital. At the end of 1916 the company's shares were quoted at 275, as against 144 at the end of 1913.

THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,1 but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

A method is described whereby the relationship of both the "at-pressure" powder compact density and the "zero-pressure" compact density to the applied pressure may be obtained from continuous measurements of punch movement during a single compaction operation. The rate of density increase with applied pressure for the metal powders is found to be proportional to the volume fraction of pores for pressures exceeding a lower limit which varies from 15,000 to 30,000 psi, depending on the powder. 1 HE compaction of powdered materials is carried out primarily to increase the density of the material. If the ultimate goal of the over-all process is the attainment of minimum porosity, compaction is responsible for most of the densification. For example, loose powdered metals have porosities of about 65 to 75 pct. Axial loading in a die or hydrostatic pressure may effectively reduce the porosity of most powders to 20 pct or lower with pressures of 50,000 psi and greater. The relationship between the density of a powder compact and the pressure needed to achieve that density is most commonly obtained by pressing several compacts, each at a different pressure. Measurement of the densities of the individual compacts when they are removed from the die then provides the density-pressure relationship. However, this method suffers from several disadvantages. Because a large number of compacts and pressing operations are required, it is inherently slow. Furthermore, since density measurements are made after the specimens are removed from the die, data obtained refer only to pressures greater than those necessary to form a coherent compact. The third disadvantage is the inability of this method to provide information about the compact density at the applied pressure in the die. Because the determination of density-pressure relationships has been a slow, tedious process, investigators have sought to express the compaction behavior of powders by other means. The general terms "comparability" and L'compressibility" have been used to rank powders qualitatively according to their compaction characteristics. To restore a quantitative nature to the subject and to prevent confusion, Schwarzkopf1 has proposed that compac-tibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility should be used to indicate the extent to which the density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Probably the most widely used of the compaction parameters is the "compression ratio,'' which is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained by pressing at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder.2 However, the description of the compaction behavior of a powder by these parameters provides only limited information about the process because of their applicability to just one specific condition such as a given green strength or a given pressure. The method of obtaining density-pressure relationships which will be described in the present paper was designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the previous techniques while maintaining equivalent accuracy and precision. There were no important changes in the producing situation in Colombia in 1930, because the emergency bill passed by the Colombian Congress in 1927 is still in effect, and therefore no change has taken place in the law governing petroleum. At the close of 1930 the Colombian Congress began to consider a new petroleum bill. This measure is an improvement on the preceding bills which had been the subject of so much debate in the Congress. However, it cannot by any means be regarded as perfect, and a number of criticisms may be justly leveled at it. The most substantial one probably is that the royalties on public lands, and the taxes on private lands, while apparently low, are deliverable at seaboard, or payable based on seaboard price at the option of the government. If the government exercises its option to take the oil at the mouth of the well, the cost of the transportation figured back into oil is also deliverable to the government. This phase of the law has the effect of making seemingly low royalties a burden on the operator. The fact that taxes on private properties are deliverable in kind is also an unusual provision for which there is no good precedent. The pipe line provisions are also noteworthy, and the government has authority to fix rates and also to deny permits to construct pipe lines for reasons affecting national economy. There are also clauses enforcing unit operation on both public and private lands, and collecting a tax of 1 c. per 1000 ft. of gas wasted. It remains to be seen whether this bill will be enacted, or whether it will be substantially modified. This much may be said, however, that unless it is modified, it will defeat its own purpose; i. e., promotion of petroleum development in Colombia. The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. In order to overcome this adverse effect, deflocculation by three complexing agents, namely ethylenediaminetetzaacetate (EDTA), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), was investigated. The precipitates and complexes of these agents with calcium ion were characterized by potentiometric and conductometric titrations, and the surface properties of quartz and goethite were studied in the presence of calcium ion and of the complexing agents by means of streaming potential measurements and flotation tests. The results were then correlated with selective flocculation tests on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite. EDTA markedly improved the selectivity of flocculation when added in near stoichiometric amounts, whereas STPP was less effective and SHMP was totally ineffective due to strong, indiscriminate dispersion. Remanent calcium polyphosphates on the goethite surface interfered with the adsorption of starch flocculant.

Scale is a broad term which includes many types of mineral deposits which have limited solubility in water. These mineral components precipitate when combinations of scale-forming cations and anions exceed their solubility. Scale deposits are tightly bound to each other and to the metal surfaces of a water system. Precipitates that do not readily adhere to each other or to metal surfaces are known as sludges. Sludges are easily removed from a system by flushing.
