The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

THE methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value represent-ing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide con-stituents present. With such diversity in the principles and. aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by differ-ent methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the vari-ous methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. Exploration work in 1932 in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, resulted in the discovery of one new oil field, Cut Bank in Glacier County, Montana; one new gas field, Craig in Moffat County, Colorado; and the definite outlining of a second gas field, Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in which there had been drilled but one small gas well prior to 1932. During the year, 95 producing oil or gas wells were completed, giving new initial production amounting to 188,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 176,420 bbl. of oil per day for the region. By far the largest part of this new production of both oil and gas was developed in southeastern New Mexico, mainly the Hobbs field. However, the Dry Creek field of Carbon County, Montana, contributed over 5000 bbl. of; new oil production. Sixty-two wells were abandoned during the year but of this number only 10 promising structures were nonproductive. The remaining 52 wells had little to recommend their drilling from a structural or strati-graphical standpoint. Eighty-eight wells were suspended in the region' during 1932 before the tests had reached their individual objective horizons. Many of these suspensions were due to financial difficulties and it is possible that several of the operations may be resumed at a later date. At the close of the year, 54 wells were actively drilling, 54 were shut down and there were 20 rigs and locations in the five Rocky Mountain states. The accompanying table gives details of drilling and production.

THE use of oxygen in electric furnaces is relatively old, and the practice has been employed by several steelmakers prior to the recent impetus given generally to the use of oxygen in steelmaking. This application has been described recently in several publications,1 and a number of patents relating to the application of oxygen in electric furnaces have been issued.2 An effort is made in this paper to assemble recent information relating to the use of oxygen in electric furnaces and to present this material from a practical viewpoint, to an extent consistent with the withholding of certain operating data which manufacturers consider to be confidential. The use of oxygen has been extended during the past months in a number of additional steel companies by incorporating oxygen practice into regular production and by much increased experimentation. Available records show that oxygen is used more or less regularly at present in 18 shops, of which six utilize the oxygen for production and the others for experimen¬tation. The number of furnaces per shop using oxygen varies from one to six. Many types of electric-furnace steel have been prepared with the assistance of pure oxygen, including low-carbon and medium-carbon killed steels, low-carbon rimming steel and low-carbon and medium-carbon stainless and alloy steels. Oxygen has been used in furnaces of all sizes up to 90 tons capacity for accelerating charge meltdown and for reduction of carbon.

The annealing behavior of a heavily cold-worked FeCo-V alloy has been studied at temperatures both above and below Tc, the critical temperature for ordering. It was found that re crystallization and grain growth can take place below Tc in the ordered state and that, in agreement with results for fcc alloys, order retards grain growth. The activation energy for pain growth is -55 kcal per mole in the disordered condition; it was not possible to assign a value to the activation energy for grain growth below Tc because the degree of order is changing rapidly over the temperature interval investigated. Precipitation of an fcc y phase was observed upon annealing the cold-worked alloy at temperatures of 675°C and below. SINCE it is known that diffusion constants are greatly affected by long-range order,' it is not unreasonable to anticipate that order will influence the diffusion-controlled phenomena of recrystallization and grain growth. In the course of a study of strain aging of ordering alloys around the composition Ni3Fe Vidoz, Lazarevic, and cahn2 noted that a disordered cold-worked alloy annealed at a temperature T1 just below Tc will order but not recrystallize; Tc is the critical temperature for order. The same alloy annealed at a temperature T2 just above Tc, or an alloy of different (nonordering) composition annealed at either T1 or T2, will recrystallize after equivalent amounts of cold work. Initially Selisskii and coworkers,3,4 who examined a series of cold-worked and annealed bcc Fe- Co alloys, reported that alloys forming the B2 FeCo super lattice could not be recrystallized below Tc. However in a later paper5 it was shown that FeCo ordered alloys could be recrystallized below Tc. Thus the first question to be answered by the present investigation was whether or not a heavily cold-worked Fe-Co-V alloy could be recrystallized below Tc. When it was found that the alloy would indeed re-crystallize below Tc, the influence of long-range order upon subsequent grain growth was studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The grain-growth measurements were made upon FeCo-2 pct V wire of 0.031 in. diam; the alloy was the same as that used in an earlier study of the mechanical properties of FeCO-v.6 The wire was produced by cold swageing and drawing a rod 0.125 in. diam that had been quenched into iced brine from 850°C to disorder the alloy; the initial grain size was 0.05 mm. Rates of grain browth were measured after isother-mally annealing the wire in the temperature range 675° to 825°C; T, is -720°C. Grain diameters were measured on the transverse cross section of the wires. The line-intercept method of determining the grain diameter was used; conventional light photomicrographs were taken when the grain size was greater than 10 . Carbon replicas were produced and examined in the electron microscope if the grain size was less than Dislocation configurations after recrystallization anneals were studied by electron transmission microscopy of foils produced by cold rolling a 0.125-in.-thick strip of the quenched material to 0.012 in. The Mother Lode district in California is probably better known as the land of Bret Harte and Mark Twain than as a gold-producing district, although in this respect it holds an important place. The history of quartz mining on the Mother Lode dates back to the '50s, when, after the first fever of the gold rush, men began to look for something more permanent, if not more lucrative, than the placers. Since that time, the discoveries, shutdowns, and reopenings of the many mines, together with the varying fortunes of their numerous operators, constitute an interesting chapter in California history, but one too long to include in a description of mining methods. The district is well situated, so far as physical conditions are concerned. The Mother Lode extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half way between the crest and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, the country traversed consisting of low rolling hills—typical foot-hills. The elevation varies from 1000 to 1800 ft. and the climate is most desirable. There is an abundance of water, timber is easily obtained from the higher foot-hills a few miles east, and cheap hydro-electric power is generated practically on the Lode. These natural conditions are conducive to low costs in mining and have been the deciding factor in allowing profitable exploitation of the comparatively low-grade orebodies. Transportation facilities are not bad. Five branch railroads, from the main trunk lines in the valley, tap the district at intervals of from 10 to 30 miles, and the roads connecting these are fairly good for trucking purposes. Labor is made up of several nationalities, the principal ones being American, Spanish, Jugo-Slav, Italian, and Mexican. There were few Mexicans on the Lode prior to 1919, but the shortage of labor, experienced generally by the mining camps of the country in the years following the war, made necessary the hiring of some. The percentage of Mexican labor rapidly increased in 1920 and for a year or so thereafter, but it has now diminished until at most of the mines only a few Mexicans are working. Of the different nationalities, Americans are the most efficient and Mexicans the least.

These impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel—especially steel made by the oxidation processes—the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished ar at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of' the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in conlmercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

DURING recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years-at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures.

SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929' is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,

IN February, 1918, the conclusion was published by Lewis and Beal1 "that wells of equal output on the average will produce equal amounts of oil in the future, regardless of the ages of the wells." This conclusion was based upon the study of data collected principally in Oklahoma and was not known at that time to be true for other oil fields. An abundance of statistical proof was later, collected by the senior author of the present paper, which showed that the conclusion was undoubtedly well founded and that it applied to other fields as well. Accordingly, it was later restated2 as the "law of equal expectations" as follows: "If two wells under similar conditions .produce equal amounts during any given year, the amounts they will produce thereafter, on the average, will be approximately equal, regardless of their relative ages." Although only scanty data from the California oil fields were available at the time this publication was prepared, sufficient information was analyzed upon which to base the insert on Fig. 80, which showed beyond a doubt that the law held at least for a part of the Midway oil field in California. Recently the authors have collected more complete data in California, and it is the purpose of this paper to explain the method used in demonstrating the truth of the law and, in addition, to give several methods by which curves constructed in accordance with this law can be used in a practical way with ease and accuracy.

ONE of the problems encountered in working with metals at elevated temperatures is the instability resulting from solid-solid diffusion at a -common interface. A determination of the nature and magnitude of this phenomenon is important as related to structural properties of materials potentially useful in high temperature applications. This paper is concerned with the solid state reaction between metallic molybdenum and beryllium at elevated temperatures. In the older literature,' there were no known inter-metallic compounds in the system Be-Mo, and the list of beryllium intermetallics was rather small. New compilations have been made by Smithells' and by Taylor," listing all the then known beryllium binary intermetallic compounds. In addition to these, some new phases have just been reported' in the system Zr-Be and some further compounds of the type MBe,3 have been currently described. The new compound MoBe,, which is reported upon in this paper differs considerably from the above mentioned MBe13 group, and will be discussed in detail. Diffusion Study The nature of the solid diffusion at a Mo-Be interface was determined by sealing a beryllium rod inside a molybdenum capsule and heating at a temperature of 2000°F' (1100°C) for 100 hr. The molybdenum capsule was fabricated from % in. swaged molybdenum rod obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. The beryllium metal was obtained from Brush Beryllium Corp. as % in. cold-drawn rod. This material assayed 99.05 pct Be and contained as impurities 0.84 pct Be0 and 0.19 pct Be2C. The molybdenum capsule was % in. in OD x 2 in. long. To prepare it, a concentric hole 0.250 in. + 0.001 in. — 0.000 in. in diam was drilled and reamed in one end of a rod to a depth of 1 '/2 in. A 1 in. long beryllium rod 0.250 in. + 0.000 in. — 0.001 in. in diam was pressed into the molybdenum capsule. A molybdenum plug 0.250 in. & 0.001 in. in diam x 9/16 in. long was then used to seal the beryllium in place. The capsules were placed in a molybdenum resistance furnace and heated at 2000°F (1100°C) for 100 hr. On cooling, the specimens were cut and examined metallographically. Fig. 1 is a micrograph at X250 of a portion of the interface from a transverse section. Four phases are clearly visible, with sharp boundaries between them. Phase A is a section of the molybdenum capsule; phase B is the molybdenum-rich intermetallic composition MoBe,; phase C is the beryllium-rich compound MoBe13; phase D is a section of the beryllium rod. All phases were readily polished to a high metallic luster. The molybdenum-rich phase has a pronounced purple tinge. The beryllium-rich phase (C) is only slightly darker than the pure beryllium. In polarized reflected light, however, it shows striking birefringence between crossed Nicols. The black areas represent flaws or pores in the material. A small representative amount of powdered material from each of the phases was carefully removed under the microscope with a diamond tool. With this material, powder X-ray diffraction patterns were made for the identification of each phase. Table I lists the X-ray diffraction spacings and corresponding indexes characteristic of these intermetallic compounds. Synthesis To establish the formula of the new intermetallic compound, X-ray diffraction patterns were made from powders obtained from solidified melts of known composition. In situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the ion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in south Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate. Trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant before yellow cake precipitation.

Ventilation of the Butte mines has long been a rather difficult problem because of the natural high temperature of the rock. With increase* in mining depth, higher rock temperatures have been encountered, and this has caused a constantly growing demand for more effective ventilation measures. During recent years the hazards of dust in mine air have been more clearly recognized, and have necessitated the adoption of dust-prevention methods. To meet these ventilation problems in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., a mines ventilation department was organized in 1918, to act under the direction of the general superintendent of mines. At the present time, under normal operating conditions, the force employed includes the ventilation engineer, two chief assistant ventilation engineers and eight assistant ventilation engineers. The activities of the department are, briefly: (1) planning and supervising operation of the general ventilation system; (2) planning and supervising the operation of dust-prevention measures, together with dust sampling and related microscopic work for the quantitation of the dust samples and determination of particle-size distribution; (3) the design and development of air-conditioning methods to meet present exceptionally severe temperature conditions and in anticipation of future requirements. To a large extent the technical features of the ventilation methods have been described in earlier papers by the author. This paper is written mainly to summarize past accomplishments bearing most closely on health and safety, with a somewhat more detailed account of the dust-prevention measures that have been developed comparatively recently. Facilitating Flow of Am As a basic requirement for the safety of the mcn, all ventilation plans are subject to a ruling that the main operating shafts must be maintained as inlet air courses. Under this condition, a safe, fresh-air escapeway is assured if a fire occurs within the mine, and the shaft; is available as a base

INTRODUCTION The decade from 1969 to 1979 saw the crest of a wave of investments by companies and investors, primarily from the major industrial nations, in the metals and minerals industries of the so-called lesser developed countries. This was brought about by two major considerations: 1). The higher ore grades and therefore the higher profit potential of the mineral deposits in the third world countries, and 2). The desire, particularly by the European countries and by Japan, to ensure a safe supply of raw materials not available in their own countries. The decade began with the start of the Toquepala mine in Peru and the major investments in the Bougainville mine in Papua New Guinea and the Ertsberg mine in Indonesia. It ended with the start-up of Southern Peru Copper Company (SPCC) Cuajone mine in Peru and Inco's Soroako mine in Indonesia and the investments in several major alumina or aluminum projects in Australia and Brazil. Concurrent with this huge flow of funds into the mineral resources industry of the developing world was the build-up of a psychological fear in the host countries of exploitation/domination by the foreign investors. This resulted in an increasing trend towards: 1). Nationalization of existing mineral ventures, and 2). Tougher legal/fiscal frameworks for new ones. NATIONALIZATION Nationalization appeared in its earliest form as "Mexicanization" of the petroleum industry in Mexico in the 1930's, followed later by Mexicanization of the mining industry in general. This was enacted with the Mexican Mining Law of 1961 which required that 51% of the equity be owned by Mexican nationals. Later in the decade the equity share for foreign investors was reduced to 33 1/3% for the developers of the Frasch sulphur operations in the Isthumus of Tehuantepec. However, the law was not fully implemented in the copper industry until late 1970 with the purchase of 51% of the ownership in the Cananea Mining Company. The trend toward nationalization of the copper industry progressed to Chile where in 1967 under the Government of Eduardo Frei the major North American copper companies were induced to sell a one-half interest in their Chilean mines to the State. Likewise, in 1970, "Zambianization" took place, when the two major operating companies Roan Selection Trust (Amax) and Zamanglo (Anglo American) were restructured into Roan Consolidated Mines (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Mines (NCCM) providing the government with 51% of the equity ownership. Whilst the earlier forms of nationalization in general constituted a fairly priced buy-out (El Teniente, Chile for US$80 million, RCM for US$117.8 million, NCCM for US$178.7 million), the total nationalization of the Chilean mining companies in 1970 under Salvador Allende did not. Later, "Western" countries joined this trend and on October 29, 1973, Mr. Gough Whitlam proclaimed that "overseas capital must continue... in partnership with Australian capital" and "in some special energy cases we have an objective of 100% Australian ownership". In 1974 Mr. Pierre Trudeau stated: "The Liberal Party of Canada sets as an objective that new resources projects in the natural resource field should have at least 50% and preferably 60% Canadian equity ownership". FOREIGN INVESTMENT The situation for the foreign investor in the worldwide resource industry rapidly deteriorated from then on. The use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Sometimes the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance. The saving in maintenance costs is often the smallest item, when considering the automatic substation as machine insurance. Clustering of slip bands in different systems has been observed in both ordered and disordered Cu3Au crystals compressed in the <110> orientation. Certain features of the slip band patterns are explained in terms of reactions between dislocations with Burgers vectors at 120 deg; in a few rare cases, the slip band evidence suggests that the Products of such reactions form diffuse tilt boundaries between the differently slipped regions of the crystal, similar to the known behavior of ionic crystals, but not nearly so well defined. WHEN crystals with orientations favorable for multiple slip undergo plastic deformation, slip may occur in different systems in localized regions, so that clusters of slip bands are developed. This phenomenon has been observed in fee1-4 metals and also in ionic crystals having the sodium chloride structure.5-8 In the ionic crystals, the boundaries formed between the differently slipped regions of the crystal assume characteristic orientations and are associated with macroscopic tilts that are plainly visible on the sides of the crystal. Recently, this interesting feature was explained in terms of the formation of diffuse low-angle boundaries as a result of interactions between families of glide dislocations in the different systems meeting in the boundaries.9 This paper describes an attempt to obtain similar evidence for boundary formation in an fee crystal. The alloy Cu3Au was chosen for the present study simply because this material is currently being used in a general study of differences in deformation behavior of the ordered and disordered phases of this alloy, which will be described elsewhere. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The two specially oriented compression specimens used in the present study were prepared from a melt-grown single crystal by careful cutting, grinding and polishing. The finished specimens were about 6 mm by 2 mm in cross section by 6 mm tall, with their ends parallel to (101) and sides parallel to (111) and (121); the broad faces of the specimens were made parallel to (711). Both specimens were annealed in an evacuated quartz tube at 850oC for several hours, slowly cooled to 500°c, and then quenched into water in order to obtain the disordered state for the alloy. One of the specimens was partially ordered (with S- 0.8) by reannealing at 350oC for 100 hr. After these annealing treatments, both of the specimens were electropolished. 10 Finally, the specimens were compressed in the [loll orientation and their stress-strain curves were recorded. The deformation was carried out in increments of a few percent strain. At each stage in the deformation the specimens were unloaded, removed from the compression jig, and examined optically for slip bands. Before reloading, the specimens were repolished, so that the observed slip band patterns were characteristic of a particular stage in the deformation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 show!; the stress-strain curves for the ordered and disordered specimens and also indicates the stages 1, 2, and 3 where the deformation was interrupted for examination of slip bands. The curves show marked differences in flow stress and in work hardening rate in the two specimens, as observed by previous workers.11,12 Also, it was found, in agreemement with the observations of Taoka and Sakata,&apos;3 that the plastically deformed disordered alloy showed the characteristic coarse slip bands of alloys, whereas the ordered alloy exhibited a fine slip band structure similar to that of pure metals. Cycling operations have been successfully conducted in the La Gloria Zone for eight years. The cycling of this zone is now virtually completed. It is proposed that this report shall review the cycling operations of this reservoir so that the industry can more accurately evaluate the cycling process as a production method. The La Gloria project is one of the largest cycling operations in the State of Texas. The gas rights in the field are unitized in three operating units. By mutual agreement Magnolia Petroleum is the designated operator of the project for the 12 operators owning the gas rights. The La Gloria Corp, is the owner and operator of the cycling plant. The development and operation of the field are under the direction of an Operators Committee comprised of a representative of each operator. The Operators Committee is assisted by an Engineering and Geological Sub-Committee. The La Gloria gas field is situated approximately three miles north of Fal-furrias, Tex., and lies principally in the extreme south end of Jim Wells County, with its outer limits extending into the north end of Brookes County, Tex. It is a simple elliptically-shaped dome which has a closure of 350 ft. The field encompasses a surface area of 5,500 acres. The gas reserves are found in 20

The history of labor relations in the coal industry of the United States is a study of its collective bargaining. This study of collective bargaining is largely the history of the United Mine Workers of America and its contractual relations with the various coal mining employers who have produced this country&apos;s coal over the years under a free enterprise system. There have been other unions in the picture from time to time and some coal miners have mined coal without representation by any union. Even today some 25% of the nation&apos;s coal is produced outside of the collective bargaining relationship with the UMWA. However, more than 100,000 coal mine wage employees - well over 75% of the total in the industry - are covered by labor agreements negotiated for them by the UMWA. Practically all of these work in bituminous mines.
