If the correct balance between fuel and air is maintained in an open-flame furnace,' little chemical action may be expected between the products of combustion and the metal being melted. Physical' changes in the metal are the object of the melting operation, and indirectly, under certain conditions, may be the cause of subsequent chemical actions. If sufficient heat has been introduced into the metal to bring about the change from the solid phase to the liquid phase, and still further from the liquid to the vapor phase, the metal vapor in all probability will be carried from the furnace by the exhaust and rapidly combined with the oxygen of the outside air. The charge being melted in the furnace may contain elements which are chemically inactive at normal temperatures but which will form compounds at the elevated temperatures of the metal bath, or even at a lower degree. Such indirect chemical actions are very confusing and often lead to incorrect conclusions regarding furnace atmospheres. In the open-flame furnaces used in the melting of bronze, the furnace atmosphere is spoken of as being either neutral, oxidizing or reducing in its effect upon the metal. A neutral atmosphere, as mentioned, is generally considered as the atmosphere of the furnace that will produce melted bronze, neither oxidized nor gassed. It is in effect an atmosphere which is not directly the cause of any chemical action. In such an atmosphere absolutely pure metals may be melted and poured without the absorption of gases or the formation of metallic oxide. The metal has undergone a simple, physical change. An oxidizing atmosphere is one in which the air introduced to the furnace is in excess of that required to complete combustion of the fuel used. The oxygen of the excess air may combine with the metal being melted to form metallic oxide, which may or may not be dissolved by the metal. If an absolutely pure metal is melted in a furnace operating with such an atmosphere, a portion of the metal charged may be converted into metallic oxide, the amount depending upon the duration of the

DuRing recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures. Early Cleaning Methods In the early days, the tipples were simple wooden structures, with bar screens for separating the fines from the lump coal. All cleaning was done by the miners at the face, or by pickers in the railroad cars. Gates were provided in the chutes by which the flow of coal could be stopped when necessary while the pickers raked the surface of the coal in the car and picked out the impurities. Hanover, New Mexico The Hanover, New Mexico, zinc deposits were briefly described by Lindgren and others,' Paige2 and recently in more detail by Schmitt. These, the kind ordinarily called contact metamorphic, border the southern end of an oval area of granodiorite intrusive ¾ mile wide and 2 miles long (Fig. I). The granodiorite has intruded, folded, and metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks, which range in age from pre-Cambrian to Upper Cretaceous. About 90 per cent of the ore has replaced coarse, recrystallized, pure, fossiliferous, lower Mississippian, nonmagnesian limestone (Hanover limestone) 110 ft. thick;4 about 75 per cent of it occurs in the upper 50 ft. of this horizon just below an 18-ft. lower Pennsylvanian shale bed, which lies on a locally inconspicuous unconformity representing upper Mississippian time. The orebodies show five shapes or attitudes, each dependent on a special structural situation: 1. Most of the ore occurs as podlike, thick lenslike or other "three-dimensional" shoots extending from top to bottom of the Hanover limestone and lying adjacent to the outer contact of a silicate zone largely of andradite, which follows the intrusive contact (Figs. 1 and 2).

The solid solubility of boron in iron has been determined by saturating iron with respect to FeyB at several temperatures from 870° to 1135 C. In alpha iron the maximum solubility was found to be 0.002 pct B and in gamma iron the solubility varied from 0.001 pct at 915°C to 0.020 pct B at 1165OC. The eutectic and peritectoid temperatures were found to be 1165° and 911 °C respectively and the gamma iron solidus was located approximately at 0.020 pct B. RECENT investigations of boron-treated steels', ' indicate that the solubility of boron in austenite is of the order of 0.003 pct at 900°C. This has led to the general belief that the solubility of boron in a and r iron is considerably less than that indicated by Wever and Muller." Therefore the solid solubilities of boron in a and r iron have been re-determined. The eutectic and peritectoid temperatures were also remeasured and the r-iron solidus was studied in some detail.* In 1929 Wever and Miiller investigated the phase equilibria of Fe-B alloys. Fig. 1 shows the solid solubility region of the Fe-B diagram based on their investigation. They found that boron lowered the A, transformation temperature to 1381 °C where saturated 6 solid solution "which must contain about 0.15 pct B" and "r solid solution containing about 0.10 pct B" are in equilibrium with liquid containing 1.9 pct B. At the eutectic temperature of 1174"C, 7 solid solution was found to contain "about 0.15 pct B." A peritectoid relation was found to exist between a and y iron with an invariant temperature at 915 "C, where the boron solubility in 7 iron was "about 0.10 pct B" and the solid solubility in a iron "did not exceed 0.15 pct B." THE literature contains three previous studies of the chemical activities of Cd-Mg alloys: Trumbore, Wallace, and craigl obtained chemical activities of magnesium at 543" by performing electromotive-force measurements; Borg and irchenall calculated activities at 590°K based on vapor-pressure measurements of cadmium over Mg-Cd alloys by the Knud-sen effusion method; and Terpilouski and arcka measured the chemical activities of magnesium in the liquid state by means of electromotive-force measurements. In this study the vapor pressure of cadmium was determined over nine solid Cd-Mg alloys in the temperature range 571" to 697°K by the Knudsen effusion method. This study was prompted by the lack of precision in the data reported by Borg and Birchenall. Knudsen cells used during this study were fabricated from 0.020-in.-thick tantalum tubing. The tops and bottoms of the cells were cut from 0.010-in.-thick tantalum sheet, press-fitted, and welded in place. The orifice was drilled in the cell top and subsequently reamed to a knife-edge thickness. The diameter of the orifice was measured with a traveling microscope capable of reading 0.0001 cm. This paper discusses the metallurgical testing procedures and their applications at the laboratories and mills of Pima Mining Co. The author shows, using discussions and case histories, that routine sampling and evaluation of daily and monthly data can be as valuable as thorough laboratory investigations and mill test work. A great deal of valuable information can be made available this way. This paper discusses laboratory and mill metal-lurgical testing procedures and their applications at Pima Mining Co., located about 25 miles southwest of Tuscon, Ariz. The Company, incorporated in 1951 (the year the orebody was found) in California to operate the Pima mine, is jointly owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., Utah Contruction and Mining Co., and Union Oil Co. Milling started in December 1956. The main Pima orebody is a contact metamorphic vein of copper-bearing hornfels with an average dip of 45° to the south with an east-west strike. The hanging and footwalls are quartzitic pyroclastics (arkosite) containing some sulfides. Barren igneous intrusions are also present. Conglomerates and alluvial wash cover the deposit to a depth averaging about 200 ft. The principal copper mineral is chal-copyrite. Native copper, chalcocite, and minor amounts of chrysocolla and other copper minerals are also present, together with sphalerite and some molybdenite. Generally, it has been noted that the ratio of chalcocite to chalcopyrite is higher in the lower grade ores, while as the grade increases, there are only minor amounts of chalcocite. Open pit mining is employed at Pima, using both trucks and an inclined skiphoist system. A detailed description of Pima Mining Co. operations was presented by Spaulding et all. More recently another orebody to the north and east of the present pit has been discovered and will be placed in operation within a few years. This ore is of a porphyritic rather than a lode nature since values are disseminated in both igneous and metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks. The new orebody is expected to be harder and cleaner than the present deposit. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Pima Mining Co. nor of the profession in general. PlMA MILL The following outline of milling practice is presented to furnish a background for later chapters of this report wherein specific problems will be detailed and analyzed. Run of mine ore is crushed in three stages, using conventional equipment to 85% minus 1/2-in. for feed to two 10 x l6-ft rod mills operating in open circuit. Each rod mill discharge is split between two 10% x 13-ft ball mills in closed circuit with three 20-in. cyclones. In addition, a 7 x 12-ft ball mill with one 20-in. cyclone receives part of the discharge from one of the rod mills. This equipment was manufactured by Allis Chalmers and Equipment Engineers. The cyclone overflows are combined, sampled and, after joining the regrind cyclone overflow, are distributed into 12 10-cell Fagergren 66-in. flotation machines. THE Allouez Mine is situated in section 31, town 57, north of range 32 west, Michigan. The mine is being worked in a conglomerate bed, which conglomerate is generally conceded to be the continuation of the Albany and Boston conglomerate of Houghton County. Besides the well-known Calumet and Hecla with the adjoining Osceola, both working on the same bed, and the new location, the Seneca, now being tried on the Kearsarge conglomerate, the Allouez Mine is the only one working on a conglomerate bed. The Albany and Boston, in Houghton County, of which, as said before, the Allouez is supposed to be the continuation, shares with all the remaining conglomerate beds, near and around Portage Lake, the property of being non-quartziferous, while the conglomerates of Keweenaw County are all highly quartziferous in character. This change takes place, according to Professor Pumpelly, about six miles northeast of Portage Lake. The Allouez conglomerate, with a dip of 38° 15' and a general course of about 36° east of north, is overlaid by a trap, and has as its footwall an amygdaloid. The trap is followed by a series of amygdaloidal melaphyres and true amygdaloids, further on by the greenstone and ashbed ; towards the lake shore alternating traps and conglomerates are found. At the footwall of the Allouez conglomerate, an amygdaloid lies, the thickness of which is not known, which is also the case with the other formations, accurate surveys and geological researches of this district having, as I was informed, never been made. About 198 meters (650 feet), horizontally measured, from the Allouez conglomerate another amygdaloid bed can be traced, on which the present rockhouse stands, further on a melaphyre is exposed, and then follow the diverse conglomerates, the Calumet, the Kearsarge, and Kingston, which, according to the last geological report, are at about the re-

THE data on the critical resolved shear stress for zinc single crystals published by Rosbaud and Schmid1 showed many irregularities, as seen in fig. 1. There have been subsequent investigations,2,3 but no one has repeated this work with a wide range of orientations, with specimens of a higher degree of purity and perfection, and with improved experimental techniques in order to determine whether these variations were entirely experimental or whether they might have been due, at least in part, to some feature of the mode of deformation not known or understood. ALTHOUGH considerable attention has been devoted to reaction mechanisms and equilibria of a number of endothermic reactions through which metals or their refractory compounds can be formed upon heated surfaces, only a comparatively small amount of work has been done to develop rate information for these systems. The interestin and very worthwhile work of Holden and Kopelman, Runnalls and Pidgeon,Dijring and Moliere, and Herrick and ICrieble4 is to be noted; however, their work was done under very specific conditions and the rate information which they have developed is not applicable to many systems which have been studied experimentally. That a more generalized approach is needed is shown by the diversity of these systems and of the experimental conditions which they require. These include the preparation of titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, co-lumbium, aluminum, and silicon by decomposition or disproportionation of their halides, in some instances through hydrogen reduction; the preparation of nickel and iron by decomposition of their car-bonyls; and the preparation of copper by decomposition of the acetylacetonate. They may be carried out at temperatures ranging from 100" to over 2000°C and at pressures of from less than one mm Hg to superatmospheric. The physical mechanism of the overall process can be broken down into several steps, any one of which may be rate-determining; and the rate associated with each of these basic physical processes can be predicted. Consequently, by proper application of the present technology of rate processes, it is possible to arrive at a rate of metal deposition in the system of interest and to reach an understanding of the influence of' each major variable upon the deposition rate. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how this can be done and to present experimental results for a specific system for comparison with theory. The overall process of deposition of metal upon a heated surface which is immersed in vapors of a compound of the metal can be broken down into the following steps: 1) Transport of the reactant vapors to the surface. 2) Decomposition of the reactant in the immediate vicinity of the surface to a) establish chemical equilibrium if reaction rates are high; or to b) establish a dynamic equilibrium in accordance with the several reaction rates. 3) Diffusion of reaction products away from the vicinity of the surface, with or without simultaneous recombinations to form still other products. The overall process is said to be diffusion controlled if Step 1, or the equivalent Step 3, is slow; it is reaction-rate controlled if Step 2b is slow. When experimental evidence shows the reaction rate to be controlling, the well-known theories of Eyring' and others can be used as a basis for correlating and extrapolating the experimental data. Although these theories give only approximate estimates of reaction rates, they are of considerably greater value in correlating experimental data. Most deposition systems operate at surface temperatures sufficiently high that reaction rates near the surface are very high. Mass-transport rates then become controlling; and it is this regime of diffusion controlled rates which is most often of concern and Which will be considered here. When the system pressure is very low, i.e., in the micron range, then the transport processes are those of molecular movement, and the results of kinetic theory can be applied to specify a rate of arrival of reactant molecules at the heated surface. If the condensation coefficient can be estimated, then the deposition rate will be given by the product (rate of arrival) x (condensation coefficient), Conversely, experimental data can be used to determine a condensation coefficient, as was done by Holden and Kopelman' for the decomposition of zirconium tetraiodide upon a heated molybdenum surface, who found the coefficient for zirconium on molybdenum to be 1.0 at temperatures of 1382°C and above. In this pressure range, the geometry of the system. and in particular the distance between the source of reactant molecules and the heated surface, can exert a considerable effect upon the deposition rate;

BICRYSTAL specimens grown from the melt have been used extensively for investigations of the influence of grain boundaries on plastic deformation. The bicrystals are usually of predetermined orientation prepared by seeded growth from the melt in milled graphite boats. This technique has been described in detail by Chalmers.' Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [']Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths. In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. As a part of a general investigation of the separation of bitumen from hydrocarbon mixtures a study was made of a restricted quaternary system composed of methane, decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The work was limited to a pressure of 8000 psi, a temperature of 220 °F, and to a fixed relative proportion of decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The measurements permitted the determination of the distribution of these components in each of the fluid phases. It was not possible to distinguish a second liquid phase in the course of these measurements. Gas-liquid equilibrium "constants" of each of the components were found to vary markedly with the composition of the system while temperature and pressure remained fixed. INTRODUCTION The separation of bitumen frorn naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been of importance for a number of years in the production of petroleum, especially in the California area. The deposition of this material from crude oils was noted in earlier studies of the solubility of natural gas in crude oil.¹,²,3 Studies of the separation of bitumen from crude oils from the Greeley and Santa Fe Springs fields were carried out."." The behavior of these systems appeared complex and studies of two restricted ternary systems involving mixtures of n-pentane, tetralin, and bitumen,' and of decane, tetralin; and hitumen, confirmed this belief. Reviews of the literature pertaining to the separation of bitumen from naturally occuring and refined hydrocarbons are available." The important effect of methane in the separation of bitu- men from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures was apparent from the earlier studies and for that reason it appeared desirable to investigate a restricted quarternary system involving mixtures of methane. decane, tetralin, and bitumen; data concerning the behavior of mixtures of decane. tetralin. and bitumen having already been obtained.V his study was restricted to a pressure of 8000 psi," a temperatue of 220° F, and fixed relative proportions of bitumen, decane. and tetralin. This composite constituent, hereinafter designated as the less volatile constituent, was made up of 0.0455 weight fraction bitumen. 0.0909 weight fraction decane, and 0.8636 weight fraction tetralin. The experimental method involved bringing together mixtures of methane and the less volatile constituent in varying proportions in a constant volume container at the pressure and temperature indicated above. The composition of each of the phases was determined and from this the extent of the separation of bitumen was established. MATERIALS The bitumen used in this investigation was obtained from the same stocks employed in earlier studies. The crude material from the North Coles Levee field was stored in the laboratory] in a closed drum for a period of five years. Several samples from this stock were subjected to refining operations which were described earlier,' and every effort was made to follow the same procedure in all cases. It was necessary to prepare supplies of bitumen for this investigation at two rather widely different times. These materials have been identified as samples 1 and 2.
