The three gas-producing "pools" discussed in this paper are in Sweet-water County, southwest Wyoming, and Moffat, County, northwest Colorado. Hiawatha, North Baxter Basin and South Baxter Basin gas fields became economically important in 1929 when a 330-mile gas line connected them with Salt Lake City, Ogden and towns en route. This development immediately focussed attention on the gas-producing fields and the efforts of the producing company to develop them in an orderly, economical manner. Beds or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found in a thick salt section (Salado) overlain by Rustler Red Beds in several members of which water is present and from one of which the rehery process water used by International is obtained. Most of the holes drilled are less than 1000 ft. deep, but some wildcat holes have exceeded 3- ft. cable or rotary tools are used to drill down to the salt. when samples of water are desired the cable rig is used, but when this is not necessary, and where caving material is present, the rotary rig has an advantage. The rotary rig has a further advantage in that only one machine is required to drill and core the entire hole, whereas the cable rig must be moved off to make way for the core drill. Casing is placed in the upper section of the hole as required to shut off water, and a 5 3/16 in. string is set in the top of the salt before coring starts. With the rotary rig drilling is often carried to the salt with no casing, as drilling mud seals off caving ground and water-bearing strata, and a string of 4-in. line pipe or 4-in. flush-joint casing is landed on top of salt. Several types of gasoline-powered core rigs have been used in the field and all recover a 2 1/2-in. core. More recently the Sullivan Model 37 rotary rig has been tried, and a Sullivan Model N has been adapted to use a rotary bit in the upper section. Core is recovered in 20 ft. sections with a double-tube core barrel, and the bit used is a bottom-discharge type set with diamonds. The drilling fluid must be a saturated brine to prevent solution and etching of the minerals present. Blowouts are apt to Occur from nitrogen gas trapped under the several polybalite beds, and some have been strong enough to blow the tools out of the hole. Core recovery is practically loo per cent. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon* and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. This paper discusses the results of a study of reservoir pressures in the Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana, showing the general relation of the reservoir pressure to its subsea depth, as well as excessive reservoir pressures that have been encountered. The latter are particularly important in mud-control work, and the data show why it is necessary to use muds having a relatively high density in many of the deeper wells drilled in this area. Only a comparatively few of the wells drilled in the Gulf Coast that have encountered excessive pressures are discussed, but as far as is known those omitted fall within the range of pressure observed by the writers. Measurement of Pressures The following methods were used to determine the values of the original pressures: 1. Estimation of original pressure from subsequent pressure behavior of fields. This method is not precise, and was used only in a few of the older fields in which better methods of obtaining original pressures were not available. Only normal pressures were determined by this method. 2. Measurement of shut-in pressures soon after completion of the first producing well. With one exception, all pressures measured by this method were normal, this well having a pressure slightly higher than normal. 3. Measurements of pressure in connection with drill-stem tests. 4. Estimates from the maximum hydrostatic head of mud that failed to prevent flow from the high-pressure formations into the hole. This method is not exact, tending generally to indicate low pressures. Normal Pressures All pressure measurements available are plotted in Fig. 1, with original pressure at the water-oil contact as abscissa and subsea depth as ordinate. MeTallographic specimens whose surfaces are to be investigated are too thick to allow either light or electrons to pass through them for microexamination by transmission. This difficulty is overcome with optical microscopes by illuminating the surface through the objective lens. For electron microscopes best results are obtained by preparing thin replicas of the surface of the specimen, placing them in the microscope and passing the electron beam through them. Since electron microscopes represent a rather recent invention, they have found little application as compared with optical microscopes. This is true because, aside from the cost of new equipment and development of new techniques, some of the older replica methods necessitated the destruction of the surface from which a thin transparent replica was obtained. In other processes in which the surface is preserved, either too tedious a procedure is required, unsuited to "mass-production" requirements of industrial laboratories, or replicas of insufficient contrast and sharpness are produced. In general, investigations with the electron microscope involve five steps: (I) polishing the surface of the metal specimen, (2) proper etching of the surface, (3) preparing the suitable replica from the surface, (4) examination and phorography in electron microscope and (5) interpretation. Preparation of Metal Surfaces Usual metallographic polishing is generclly satisfactory. It is important though that the final polish be applied very carefully, since otherwise evidence of a small amount of deformation might show up even on relatively deeply etched surfaces. A high-power microscope should be used to determine the suitability of the polish and etch. This, of course, is not different from optical examinations, but in these, if a deep etch is used, the problem is less serious. It is frequently difficult to detect with optical microscopes poor polishing aside fiom superficial scratches before etching. Figs. I and 2 show micrographs of "well" and "poorly" polished nickel etched by immersing the sample for 20 min. in a solution containing 8 grams cupric sulphate in 40 C.C. of concentrated HCl and 40 C.C. of Hz0 (Marble's reagent). The sample shown in Fig. I was polished in its final stages for 5 min. on a carborundum wheel followed by ro min. on a rouge wheel, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 2 was polished only I min. on the rouge wheel. Generally, this procedure does not guarantee that the surface of the specimen will be either undistorted or deformed. It was applied here merely to show the effects Of good and poor polishing. Much information regarding the transfornlatio~lal characteristics of a steel as it cools in a known manner from the austenitic state can be obtained from dilatometric studies. This method has received more arid more attention because of its great flexibility, accuracy, and ease of interpretation. 'The method is entirely applicable to any rate of heating and cooling although the experumental procrdures for high rates of cooling have offered some difficulties. This paper presents a description of equipment employing cooling rates up to 500 °C. per secorld and the results of dilatometric observations on six commercial steels are included. French and Klopsch1 studied the cooling transformations of a serirs OF carbon steel, using the thermal arrest method. This was followed by the systematic investigatiol1 of Esser and co-workers on the effect of carhon2 and other alloying additions. in which the transforlnation temperature\ were determined by magnetic induction measurements indicated by a string galranoineter. Emphasis was placed on determining Ar' trailsformations and the critical cooling rates for these steels. The maglietic measurements wrere used in an effort to obtain more accurate data at higher cooling rates. Measurements of thermal arrest were made also to check the validity of the magnetic indications, and good correlation was found between the two, although Esser's,Ar' temperature measurements on iron-carbon alloys were about 200°F. lower than the measurements made by Fresnch and Klopsch. A notable contril~ution by Esser was the introduction gas quenching. wever and Rose4 used a moving-coil galranometcr in the study of the .Ar and Ar" of iron-carbon alloys by the thermal arrest method and obtained somewhat lover Ar" temperatures than those observed by Esser below I per cent carbon and considerably higher ahove. They concluded that the cooling rate had little influcncc on the Ar" temperatures above 0.4 per cent carbon, although Esser had observed a decrease in the -4r" temperature with increasing cooling rate with similar steels. Digges determined the .Ar" temperature4 for a scries of high-purity iron-carbon alloys, and close agreement with his results was obtained by Greninger. The thermal arrest method. together with metallographic observation used in both these studies, represents the latest investigations of this type. This paper presents the resitlts of an investigation of two-phase, gm-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. Experimental data were taken in three field-size, horizontal pipelines, two of which were constructed for this purpose. The data were obtained using water, distillate and crude oil separately as the liquid phase, and natural gas as the second phase. Experimental pressure-length traverse, liquid holdup and flow-pattern data were collected for each set of flow rates. These data were used to develop three correlations that are presented herein. The liquid-holdup values correlated with various flow parameters without regard to the existing flow pattern. The same was true for the energy-loss factors. A new flow-pattern map is presented that appears to be quite reliable, but not required for the pressure-loss calculations. The liquid-holdup correlation and the energy-loss factor correlation are used in conjunction with a two-phase flow power balance, developed during this study, to predict the pressure losses that occur during gas-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. A recommended calculational procedure is given, as well as a statistical analysis of the results. This procedure lends itself to computer application, since several small pressure decrements are needed to calculate a pressure-length traverse. The correlations are shown graphically, but may be curve fitted with existing curve-fitring computer programs. INTRODUCTION Due to the frequent occurrence of gas-liquid flow in pipelines and the desire to accurately calculate the pressure losses that occur in these lines, two-phase flow is of considerable interest to the petroleum, chemical and nuclear industries. In the petroleum industry, gas-liquid mixtures have been transported over relatively long distances in a common line due to the advent of centralized gathering and separation systems. Long two-phase flowlines are usually accompanied by large pressure drops which influence the design of the system. Gas-lift installations are designed on the basis of known tubing pressures at the wellheads. The horizontal flowline connecting the wellhead and the separator system must be correctly sized in order to minimize the horizontal flowline pressure losses and the wellhead tubing pressure. Practically all oilwell production design involves horizontal two-phase flow in pipeknes. All of the flow processes of oil and gas production must be studied simultaneously to insure good well design. Since the beginning of offshore oilfield development, long horizontal flowlines have been constructed. Because pressure losses greatly influence the performance of producing wells, a method is desired that can be used to predict such pressure losses and select optimum flowline size. Several types of gas-liquid flow exist, and many of these are discussed by Gouse The study of pressure gradients, fluid distributions and flow patterns that occur in horizontaI multiphase flow is made difficult by the great number of variables involved. The various flow regimes give rise to changing velocities of the fluid particles in all directions. These instabilities of the interface between the gas and liquid prohibit the determination of actual vector velocities of fluid particles in each phase. Also, it is practically impossible to arrive at correct sets of boundary conditions. Therefore, most investigators have concluded that a solution to the problem by the classical fluid dynamics approach, whereby the Navier-Stokes equationsM are formulated and solved, is far too complex. Other methods must be utilized to develop general correlations that will predict the behavior of gas-liquid horizontal flow systems. Multiphase flow studies have sought to develop a technique with which the pressure drop can be calculated. Pressure losses in two-phase, gas-liquid flow are quite different from those encountered in single-phase flow; in most cases an interface exists and the gas slips past the liquid. The interface may be smooth or have varying degrees of roughness, depending on the flow pattern. Therefore, a transfer of energy from the gaseous phase to the liquid phase may take place while energy is lost from the system through the wetting phase at the pipe wall. Such an energy transfer may be either in the form of heat exchange or of acceleration. Since each phase must flow through a smaller area than if it flowed alone, amazingly high pressure losses occur when compared to single-phase flow. Most investigators of horizontal two-phase flow phenomena have chosen to separate their experimental data into several groups of observed flow patterns or regimes.

The mathematical analysis of diffusion curves in solid metals is carried out ordinarily by analogy with the flow of heat in a continuous medium and no account is taken of the fact that the materials involved are composed of discrete particles that move discrete distances at irregular intervals. It is possible to treat the problem on the basis of simple assumed atomic mechanisms, in which case, because of the small scale of the elementary process compared to the gross effects observed experimentally, the two procedures lead to the same expression for the variation of concentration with distance. Thus, for engineering purposes, the usual methods are quite satisfactory. If, on the other hand, our purpose is to go beyond the mere collection of data, however desirable this may be, it is necessary to recognize and understand the factors that are of fundamental importance. One factor that has not hitherto been considered when dealing with solid metals is the difference in atomic weights of the isotopes of a single metal. While all the atoms of a given element are alike chemically, their weights may vary by a small but significant amount, and atoms of different weights may have different diffusion rates. With gases this variation in isotopic weight produces a change in the rate of diffusion by a factor inversely proportional to the square root of mass. While, except for the lightest gases, this is not a large effect, it is, for example, sufficient to permit a considerable concentration of one isotope at the expense of others. If metals exhibit a similar phenomenon, some modification of the analysis of the diffusion process will be required, since the different isotopes of a given metal will have different probabilities of moving and the heat-flow analogy will contain a fundamental error. This situation cannot be rectified by using a diffusion coefficient based on the average probability of moving, and it can be shown that even when the diffusion coefficient is independent of composition, the diffusion curve will not agree with the simple theory except in the rare cases where only one isotope exists; e.g., gold. If, however, the mass effect in the solid state were no larger than in the gaseous, the errors arising therefrom in the analysis of ordinary diffusion curves would be quite negligible. Nevertheless, our desire to obtain all possible information concerning the details of the diffusion process, and the possibility of diffusion in the solid state as a means for separating isotopes are cogent reasons for undertaking an experimental study to determine whether isotopes of different masses diffuse at different rates. Developments of well-surveying instruments, coring .and core orientation, were in an advanced state when drilling for oil began—these developments actually originated with the mining industry.' Surveying of oil wells was not generally used in the United States until Alexander Anderson2 disclosed that the majority of wells drilled with rotary tools were crooked, with average horizontal drifts of about 516 ft. for holes 5000 ft. deep and about 793 ft. for holes 6000 ft. deep. This disclosure brought about the development of many additional instruments for surveying oil wells during the progress of drilling and after their completion. Surveying of boreholes, during the process of drilling at regular depth intervals, became a standard practice in the petroleum industry. Some producing states even established laws making check surveys mandatory, during drilling and under certain conditions also after completion. The surveying of boreholes also brought about changes and improvements in drilling practices. It provides information for the guidance of the hole while drilling, and for plotting the course as the work progresses, enabling the driller to take corrective measures immediately and with the least expense. The reasons for drilling straight holes are too well recognized to warrant any full discussion of them here. Straight holes are less costly to drill, because they reach the object on the shortest course. Table I shows the horizontal drift and loss in vertical depth for various angles of inclination. It is not surprising, therefore that many drilling contracts for oil wells today limit the drilling contractor to a maximum inclination off the vertical of 2° or 3O. In the mining industry the reasons for drilling straight holes are still more serious. A crooked hole may miss an ore body underground or provide incorrect information regarding an ore body. Types of Surveying Instruments The surveying instruments used in oil-well drilling may be classed in two types: I. Inclinometers, recording inclination only.

The nitrogen contents of seven specimens of iron and steel were determined by the three methods. Good agreement won generally observed between the results of the isotope -dilution and Kjeldahl determinations, tltzts establishing the reliability of the isotope -dilutzon technique. For some specimens, the vacuum-fusion values at 1650 °C were lower than the corresponding Kjeldahl values by up to 0.0015 pct absolute. These differences were eliminated for a specimen of "pure" iron by performing the vacuum-fusion analyses at 2100 ° to 2240 °C. The reason for this relatively high temperature required m the vaczium-fusion analyses is discussed. ThE determination of nitrogen in iron and steel has been the subject of numerous investigations and a concise review of the extensive literature in this field has recently appeared.' Two methods of analysis are most commonly employed, the vacuum -fusion and the chemical or Kjeldahl method. Except in special cases where the presence of certain alloying elements may present difficulties, both methods are generally regarded as applicable, although the vacuum-fusion method is more sensitive and is often preferred for samples of very low-nitrogen content. The method of isotope dilution, first employed for the determination of gases in metals by Kirshenbaum and Grosse,2 has recently been applied to the determination of nitrogen in iron and steel.3,4 The method is attractive in that it does not require the quantitative extraction of gas from the metal specimen. Staley and Svec3 modified the standard Kjeldahlpro-cedure by introducing, along with the steel sample, a measured amount of ammonium sulfate enriched in the isotope 15N. The nitrogen content was obtained by measuring the isotopic ratio 15N/14N in the resultant solution. The technique involved the distillation of nitrogen as ammonia from alkaline solution and subsequent oxidation of NH4+ in the distillate to gaseous nitrogen. The results for iron and steel samples of commercial origin were often in reasonable agreement with values quoted by the suppliers, although occasional marked discrepancies were observed, particularly with the results of vacuum-fusion analyses. Preliminary work in this laboratory4 on the determination of nitrogen by isotope-dilution in the gas phase yielded results for three samples which were significantly higher than the values obtained by vacuum-fusion. The present paper describes an extension of this work to a wider variety of samples. Analytical results by the Kjeldahl method are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL The technique employed for the isotope-dilution determinations was similar to that described elsewhere.4 Several minor modifications were made to the apparatus. These included the use of molybdenum instead of platinum-rhodium suspending wires when crucibles were degassed at temperatures above 1600°C. The circulatory system used previously for converting CO to CO2 was replaced by a single chamber, the walls of which were cooled directly in liquid nitrogen. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which had been recently calibrated and, as in the previous study, were minimum values obtained by sighting on the center bottom of the crucible. Temperatures obtained by sighting on the interior walls were always higher by 100' to 130°C with the design of crucible employed. Flat-bottomed crucibles exhibited an even larger temperature difference. To check the efficiency with which crucibles were degassed in the isotope-dilution apparatus, several experiments were done in the vacuum-fusion apparatus, suitably modified4 for isotope-dilution studies. Faster pumping speeds and higher degassing temperatures were possible, the latter due to the use of a generator with a higher power output (10 Kva at 398 kc per sec). In these experiments the combustion of CO was omitted and a correction4 was made for the contribution of CO to the ion current at m/e 28, used in determining the isotopic ratio R = l5NP4N. The push-pull test, which is a simple injection and pumping sequence of ground water spiked with solutes of interest, is presented as a method of determining the adsorption characteristics of a formation. Adsorption properties are necessary to predict restoration from both in situ coal gasification and in situ uranium extraction. The major problems in applying laboratory measurements to the field concern scaling the effect of particle size, and obtaining representative samples. Laboratory measurements are conducted on gram to kilogram scale samples, whereas the push-pull test evaluates a sample weighing approximately 130 to 1,000 metric tons, depending on volume injected and porosity. The problems in translating laboratory results to the field appear to be less severe for sedimentary uranium bodies than for coal. Laboratory measurements are useful in delineating possible ranges in adsorption properties, and in planning the field experiment. The adsorption properties of a formation are characterized by the cation exchange capacity (C) and the distribution coefficient measured at low concentration, (kd) 'Laboratory procedures for their measurement on coal and uranium ore are reported. Two field push-pull tests were conducted on uranium formations in Wyoming. Adsorption properties estimated from these tests on the basis of a simple cell model were compared to the laboratory values. In the first case, excellent agreement was observed between the values estimated from the field test and the values measured in the laboratory. In the second case, the value for kd determined in the laboratory was 5 times higher than the field value. It is recommended that push-pull tests be conducted on coal formations being considered for in situ gasification in view of the great uncertainty in extrapolating 1aboratory.adsorption properties to the field.

The activity of sulfur was determined as a function of composition of ferrous sulfide by equilibrating with hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures at 670° , 800°, and 900". The present results supplement the available data over the composition range from 36.6 to 39.5 pct S. The X-ray lattice spacing measurements made are in accord with the available data and indicate that the limiting composition FeSl.008 may be taken for the iron-iron sulfide equilibrium. The growth rate of ferrous sulfide on iron was measured by reacting iron strips or blocks in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. Owing to the slow approach to equilibrium between the gas phase and the surface of the sulfide layer, The sulfidation experiments were carried out for several days. It is shown that the growth rate ullimately proceeds in accordance wilh the parabolic rate law. From the parabolic rate constants and the thermodynamic data on iron sulfide the self-difiusivity and chemical diffusivity of iron in ferrous bisulfide are evalualed. The self-diffusivity of iron thus derived zs found to increase with increasing sulfur content. THE ferrous sulfide known as "pyrrhotite" is a non-stoichiometric phase having a wide composition range from about 50 to about 58 or 60 at. pct, depending on the sulfur activity. RosenQvistl studied the thermodynamics of this phase over wide ranges of temperature and composition. Hauffe and Rahmel' and Meussner and ~irchenall~ studied the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron in sulfur vapor. By using markers, these investigators showed that the iron cations were the predominant diffusing species in iron sulfide. This is confirmed decisively by the self-diffusivity measurements of condit4 who showed that the self-diffusivity of sulfur in ferrous sulfide is several orders of magnitude lower than the self-diffusivity of iron. Although much has been learned from these studies about the Fe-S system, further research on this subject was considered desirable for better understanding of the physical chemistry of iron sulfide. This work was confined to the study of the kinetics of sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. The results of this study are given in two consecutive parts. Part I, the present paper, is on the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron and the diffusivity of iron in ferrous sulfide. The second paper, Part 11, is on the kinetics of the surface reaction between hydrogen sulfide and ferrous sulfide. About 1 g of iron powder or foil. contained in a small recrystallized alumina crucible ind suspended from a calibrated silica spring, was reacted with a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known ratio until no further change in weight was observed. %hen the gas composition was changed and the new state of equilibrium was established after several hours of reaction time. The composition of the sulfide was obtained from the initial weight of the sample and the weight after equilibration. X-Ray Studies. The lattice parameters of some of the equilibrated samples were determined using the General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer with a cobalt tube (no filter) set at 40 kv apd 10 ma; the CoK, radiation was taken as 1.79020A. Observed 220 and 311 diffraction peaks of silicon served as an internal comparison standard to correct for possible misalignment of the goniometer. The lattice parameters of the sulfide phase were calculated from the corrected Bragg angles of the 110 and 102 peaks. Rate Studies. In the initial experiments attempts were made to measure the parabolic rate of sulfidation by measuring the gain in weight of a thin iron strip, -0.05 cm thick, suspended from a silica spring in the reacting atmosphere. The preliminary experiments showed that this technique was not reliable for the measurement of the parabolic growth rate of the iron sulfide layer. In the subsequent experiments the data on growth rate were obtained by measuring, on a microscope stage, change in the thickness of the sample after reaction for a specified time in a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known sulfur activity. For each reaction time a new sample was used. Precision-machined iron blocks, 0.5 by 2 by 5 cu cm, were de-greased and annealed in hydrogen for several hours prior to the sulfidation rate measurements. The experiments were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900°C in gas mixtures having the ratios, and 1.0 for periods of times from a few hours up to 8 days. Apparatus and Materials. A vertical globar tube furnace with a 3-in.-long uniform temperature zone was used. The glass tube fittings were fused on the zircon reaction tube, 1.5 in. diam. The temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple placed in the hot zone of the furnace inside the reaction tube (an alumina thermocouple sheath was used). A separate thermocouple was used for the temperature controller which maintained the furnace temperature constant within about 2°C. Anhydrous liquid hydrogen sulfide and oxygen-free dry hydrogen from gas tanks were used in preparing the gas mixtures by the constant head capillary flow-meters. In all cases volume flow rate was 1000 cu cm per min at stp, corresponding to a linear velocity of about 6 cm per sec at 800°C; under these conditions

UPON heating a metal oxide or sulfide in H2, first only oxygen or sulfur is removed from the surface. Thus the metal/nonmetal ratio in the oxide or sulfide increases and the thermodynamic activity of the metal increases accordingly. For the formation of metallic nuclei, a certain super saturation is necessary, i.e., the activity of the metal must become greater than unity. Once nuclei of the metal have been formed, the supersaturation is supposed to decrease. Even under steady-state conditions of a reduction process, however, the activity of the metal inside an oxide or sulfide phase must be greater than unity in order to have a driving force for the individual steps of the reduction process. As an example, consider the reduction of Ag2S with a high mobility of cations and electrons. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the reduction process involves the following steps:' 1) sulfur removal along the entire Ag2S surface in form of H2S, 2) migration of Ag' ions and electrons from the Ag2S surface to nuclei of metallic silver, 3) transfer of Ag+ ions and electrons from the Ag2S phase to the metal. For a finite rate of step 3, the activity of silver in Ag2S next to the Ag2S-Ag interface must be greater than unity. Moreover, for a finite rate of step 2, the activity of silver at the gas-Ag2S interface must be still somewhat greater. Theoretical considerations lead to the tentative conclusion that at least under steady-state conditions the supersaturation will be rather low.' To test this conclusion, the average activity aAg of silver in a Ag2S tablet about 2 mm thick with a diameter of 5 mm was followed as a function of time by measuring the electromotive force E of the cell Pt I Ag | Agl I Ag2S I Pt where AgI is used as a solid electrolyte in which only Ag+ ions are mobile. The activity aAg is calculated as aAg=exp(-EF/RT) Since the diffusion coefficient for transport of silver in Ag2S is very high (- 3 . l0-2 sq cm per sec),3 the average activity aAg is representative for both the bulk and the surface of the Ag2S tablet. Experiments were conducted at about 400°C. The cell was surrounded by an aluminum block in order to secure a uniform temperature and to eliminate thermoelectric effects. With the help of a potentiometer, first a potential of 0.16 v was applied to the above cell in argon in order to obtain a well defined initial state with a Ag/S ratio close to 2.000.~ Then the cell was disconnected from the potentiometer and a gentle stream of H2 was passed along the Ag2S surface. In view of the removal of sulfur in form of H2S, the electromotive force E decreased within 20 to 30 min to zero corresponding to a Ag/S ratio of 2.003 and became negative, indicating a value of aAg> 1. The chromium, iron, and tungsten borides have been treated with ammonia at different temperatures. They are attacked, forming metal nitride and boron nitride, and the results are summarized in the tables. In the tungsten-nitrogen system a new phase has been observed, closely related to the known ß phase. THE present investigations were begun to determine whether any ternary phases exist in the transition metal-boron-nitrogen systems for the metals chromium, iron, and tungsten. Attempts to prepare such phases were made by using the borides of the metals as starting materials and ammonia as the nitriding agent. Although no new ternary phases have been found to exist, the results may be of some interest with regard to the technical use of the borides. General Procedure A steady stream of dry ammonia was passed through a silica reaction tube, the central part of which was kept at the reaction temperature while its ends were water-cooled. Weighed amounts of the borides were placed in a silica or porcelain boat and heated at different temperatures for a period of 10 to 24 hr. The boat was then rapidly removed from the reaction zone to the quenching zone, the water-cooled end of the tube, by means of a simple magnetic device. The nitrogen content of the products was determined by the increase in weight of the specimens, and the phase analysis was carried out by X-ray methods. For this analysis a Guinier-type camera, constructed at this Institute, was used with a bent, ground quartz crystal monochromator. The general reaction, which occurred in all the experiments, may be summarized as: metal boride + nitrogen -* boron nitride + metal nitride For the higher temperatures pure metal was formed instead of metal nitride. It is sometimes difficult to Discussi detect boron nitride among the reaction products by X-ray methods. Prolonged exposures of some specimens showed, however, that the strongest reflections of boron nitride were present. Additional evidence for its presence was given by the increase in weight of the specimens after nitriding. This increase was always greater than that corresponding to nitride formation only and was often in close agreement with the formula given above. Finally, a white powder, which was shown by X-ray methods to be boron nitride, was left if the reaction products after nitriding Fe,B at 448°C and FeB at 768°C were dissolved in diluted sulphuric acid. Ch rom iu m - Boron - N itrogen Five phases have been found to exist in the Cr-B system,' , and all were used as starting materials. Investigations on the Cr-N system have shown the existence of two nitrides with ideal composition Cr,N and CrN.".' * The results are summarized in Table I. All the borides are attacked and decomposed into chromium nitride and boron nitride, and the kind of nitride formed depends only on the temperature and not on the boride used as starting material. It has been known for many years that the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material are very sensitive to internal strain. Any structure-sensitive property such as ferromagnetism, which is a function of the regularity of the atomic arrangement, and discontinuities such as grain boundaries must show deviations from an equilibrium state when the regularity of the lattice is disturbed. Experience has shown that such distortions have a marked effect on the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material. The purpose of this paper is to show the feasibility of using magnetic methods in detecting internal strains. More specifically, it will be shown how such properties as permeability, rema-nence, and coercive force change on cold-working of aluminum iron and how these magnetic properties change during the annealing below the recrystallization temperatures. This work was conducted for two reasons. One was the desire to see in what manner strains are relieved in aluminum iron at low temperatures—a subject of practical importance in soft magnetic materials—and the other was the feeling that a study of cold-working and strain relief might shed some light onour understandingof what takes place in the deformation of metals. Definition of Terms It is necessary to define the terminology used in this Paper because magnetic nomenclature is usually unfamiliar to the metallurgist, and certain other terms, such as recovery, have been used ambiguously by metallurgists and others. Magnetic terms are best explained by reference to the common hysteresis loop of ferromagnetic materials (Fig. I). In Fig. 1 the coordinates are magnetic induction, B, (ordinate) and magnetizing force, H. (abscissa). The c.g.s. unit for the magnetic induction is the gauss, the number of flux lines per square centimeter, and the unit for the magnetizing force is the oersted, the number of lines of force per centimeter in air or vacuum. If one starts with a completely demagnetized specimen and magnetizes it, a typical virgin magnetization curve beginning at the origin is obtained. This curve is also the locus of tips of a family of smaller hysteresis loops. From this curve it is to be noted that the induction is not proportional to the magnetizing force, and that it appears to approach a limiting induction called the saturation value, and does so for values of H of 1000 oersteds. The ratio of the magnetic induction (gauss) to the magnetizing force (oersteds) is called permeability, . Thus u= B/H and if the magnetizing force H (oersteds) is specified as ro or 100 oersteds, the permeability is written as or l00 This is the accepted notation, and will be used in this paper.
