The word recovery as used in this paper is applied in its broader sense and not limited to wells producing from horizons of unconsolidated sands. Certain problems connected with the winning of petroleum from such horizons present themselves while drilling is in progress and should be considered before drilling is commenced wherever unconsolidated sands are expected. Maximum recovery depends not alone. upon efficient pumping methods but also upon the selection of a proper drilling system and the completion of a well especially adapted to the extraction of these oil-bearing sands. 11. DRILLING Determining Factors in Selection of Method The selection of a drilling method for the development of a region in which the oil reservoir consists of unconsolidated sands is based on the following considerations: (1) Character of the formations overlying the reservoir; (2) thickness of the oil-bearing stratum or strata; (3) thickness and character of water or gas sands; (4) gas pressure to be encountered or expected; (5) total depth of well. 1. Character of the Formations Overlying the Reservoir The strata overlying the reservoir may consist of beds of shales, clays, sands and other soft materials, or they may be slates, limestones and sandstones consolidated to all degrees of hardness. Very often the overlying strata are predominantly of soft materials but interbedded with harder formations. Structures obtained on freezing of several hypo-and hypereutectic Al-Cu alloys over a range of solidification rates have been examined. Dendrite spacing, L, increases linearly with solute concentration and with the square root of the inverse freezing rate. The relationship for hypoeutectic alloys is: where rate of change of fraction solid with time, is freezing rate, C is solute concentration, (pct Cu)=1. Mass transport in inter dendritic liquid during solidification is analyzed; the experimental observations suggest maximum concentration differences and constitutional supercooling in the inter dendritic liquid increase with an increase in the solute concentration. The dendrite morphology changes with freezing rate and alloy composition. The dendrites of the a phase are parallel, uniformly spaced plates with slow freezing and rods with rapid freezing. Nonor-thogonal side branching has been observed in phases with cubic and tetragonal structures. Side branches in a dendrites are orthogonal with slow freezing and at 60 deg with rapid freezing. Formation of second-phase envelopes around the Primary phase is also discussed. DENDRITIC structure is characteristic of many types of phase transformation. The most extensively studied so far has been solidification of liquid solutions. chalmersl and coworkers have interpreted the formation of dendrites in terms of the breakdown of a planar interface. Most of the work done concerns itself with the development of an instability at the interface. Little theoretical work has been done quantitatively to relate the parameters of dendritic structure to mass transport in the liquid phase. A few empirical relations based on the experimental2'3 observations exist in the literature. Several workers2 including Brown and Adams1 have studied dendrite spacing in A1-Cu system as a function of solidification variables. In most cases, dendrite spacing has been found to increase linearly with the square root of some parameter proportional to the freezing time. The effect of solute concentration is not clear; some workers report the dendrite spacing increases with solute concentration4 whereas others report vice versa.''' ~ohatgi' has observed an increase in the spacing between ice dendrites with an increase in solute concentration in water. Tiller has also suggested that dendrite spacing should increase with solute concentration. In the present work dendrite spacing and morphology have been examined as a function of solute concentration and freezing rate. The freezing rate is defined as the fraction of liquid solidified per unit time, dfs/dß?, where f, is the fraction solid and 8 the time. The fastest freezing rate studied was 4550 times the slowest freezing rate. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS It is of interest to analyze the concentration distribution in the liquid phase between growing dendrites during solidification, Fig. 1. Since this distribution is a direct consequence of the rejection of solute by the growing solid, a diffusional process, the concentration gradients increase with the freezing rate. However, when solidification rate is the only variable in a series of experiments, the interdendritic liquid regions become smaller (i.e., the dendrites become more closely spaced) with an increase in freezing rate. The main purpose of the analytical treatment of interdendritic liquid diffusion will be to reveal a tendency for dendrite spacing to decrease with increasing solidification rate in just such a way that the maximum concentration differences developed in the liquid phase are remarkably independent of freezing rate. Two rather different analyses are set forth, one pertaining to the one-dimensional diffusion which obtains in the interdendritic liquid between parallel plate-shaped dendrites, and the other to the cylindrically symmetrical diffusion around rod-shaped dendrites during early stages of solidification. The results of the two analyses are quantitatively similar, correlating dendrite spacing, maximum concentration difference, and freezing rate. First consider the simpler one-dimensional case. Two parallel plate-shaped dendrites are separated by a distance, L, between centers, Fig. 1. Solidification takes place by the thickening of these plates, with solute being rejected into the liquid. It is assumed there is no diffusion in the solid. This thickening process is slow enough and the dendrite spacing small enough that the concentration differences which develop, although interesting and important, are very small (an important assumption which is verified ex-

Mack (University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wise.)—Have the authors considered that the effects reported in their paper are readily explainable on the basis of equilibrium grain boundary segregation rather than ordering? It seems to the writer that all of their experiments and observations correlate well with known behavior associated with equilibrium grain boundary segregation. Although at first glance one would tend to dismiss such a possibility because of the similarity of the gold and copper atoms, their sizes differ by 12.8 pct which is in the range where segregation at grain boundaries would be expected. Then, too, the electrochemical differences between the copper, the Cu3Au, and the gold strongly suggest that a segregation mechanism is involved in the corrosion of the Cu-Au alloys. R. Bakish and W. D. Robertson (authors' reply)—The authors would like to thank Dr. Mack for his consideration of the problem of grain boundary segregation as an explanation of the observed phenomena. We had considered the problem in the following terms: Assuming a pure binary Cu-Au alloy and an ideal solid solution, the surface excess, T2= N25 — N2, of the second component (gold) may be expressed in the following way20 1 —exp (—da/kT) where 8 is the difference in surface tension of copper and gold, and a is the surface area per atom. In the present case, 6 is positive which implies that the component in excess at the boundary is gold. Since the only chemically active component in ferric chloride is copper, it does not appear that the segregation of gold is likely to increase the boundary activity. A small concentration of a third component could profoundly affect the situation. Analysis indicated only spectrographic traces of impurities, all of which are soluble in both copper and gold. Quenching experiments, reported in the paper, also tended to eliminate significant effects attributable to a third component.

Operators of diamond drills have long been familiar with threadlike markings or riflings on cores but apparently have given but little serious thought to the conditions that are responsible for their production. The opinion generally held by those who have observed the phenomena is that the riflings are produced directly or indirectly by vibration, but so far as the writer is aware no systematic attempt has been made to demonstrate the fact. A careful search through the literature on diamond-drilling practice has been rewarded by only one reference to such markings of cores. J. N. Justice1 writes, "Of the peculiarities met with in the core, I will mention only one. The core from the "H" drill, at about 360 ft. came out rifled and pentagonal. The change from the circular to the pentagonal was sudden, and for 9 ft. this structure was maintained, when suddenly it returned to the circular. I have not been able to find any one who can explain the cause of this change of form. The drill men marveled at it and suggested vibration, six-stone bits, and several other hypotheses which need not be mentioned." The writer became interested in the matter of core riflings some 10 years ago while in the Flat River lead region of Missouri, where many remarkable examples of "rifled" cores were observed and collected. Since that time similar phenomena have been observed in various localities throughout the United States and Canada, and samples have been gotten together illustrating a large number of variations in form. After a careful study had been made of the material at hand it seemed desirable that certain data should be obtained from the experience of others regarding the normal action of diamond drills in forming cores, portions of which are occasionally rifled, before an attempt was made to draw any conclusions as to their cause. After a brief history of the phosphate industry of Tennessee, the distribution and origin of the phosphate rocks are described. Then the mining and treatment, together with costs of production, and the uses of the rocks are given. THERE are three distinct varieties of phosphate rock, in Tennessee, known commercially as: (a) the "brown" rock, which is the residual product of the weathering and natural concentration of certain phosphatic Ordovician limestones; (b) the "blue" rock, which is an unaltered phosphatic stratum of Mississippian or Devonian age; and (c) the "white" rock, which is the result of chemical replacement and deposition. Before 1894, South Carolina and Florida had supplied most of the phosphate of the United States, South Carolina leading until that date and Florida from then until the present time. In December, 1893, the blue phosphate of Tennessee was discovered almost simultaneously on Swan Creek, in Lewis County, by two independent parties-by one as the result of a careful and systematic search for a workable deposit of the long known kidney phosphate, and by the other through mistaking it for a "bloom" of coal. Leases were taken and, with further prospecting disclosing other deposits in the region, the development progressed as rapidly as could be expected without railroad transportation. In January, 1896, Judge S. Q. Weatherly, who was interested in the development of the blue phosphate, while riding along the road south of Mt. Pleasant, noticed some slabs of a brown rock in place above the limestone. He took samples, and had them analyzed, thus discovering the high-grade brown phosphate of this district. This discovery was kept a secret until July, 1896, when mining was started at the village of Mt.

From the beginning to the end, the attendance and enthusiasm of the 119th meeting, which was held in New York, Feb. 17 to 20 surpassed all expectations. Besides the ten technical sessions, one of which was in conjunction with the American Institute of Electrical Engineering and one a session of the National Research Council, there were two memorial meetings, one for Dr. Raymond and one for the members who died in service; two joint sessions with the Canadian Mining Institute; and a meeting devoted to pictures of copper mining, milling, and smelting. Of the 732 persons registered, 119 registered in the Institute of Metals Division. Monday's sessions were devoted to the problems of industrial organization, the Institute of Metals Division, and to petroleum and gas. Among the special features of these sessions were the topical discussions on housing and. Americanization. Americanization, too, was the topic for discussion by the Woman's Auxiliary Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, nearly 100-members of the Canadian Mining Institute were present to discuss the possibility of bringing about uniform mining laws for the United States, Canada, and Mexico, to obviate the maintaining separate legal departments and managerial forces for the several countries; and to avoid the confusion which, it is said, has led to a duplication of effort and has sometimes created a barrier to international cooperation in mining. If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 5th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 4th edition (1975) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Review. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. The Industrial Minerals Directory 1977, 1st ed., Metal Bulletin Books, Ltd., London, provides addresses of organizations in the field. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 18th annual meeting in 1982, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geological and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications: New Publications of the Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, 329 National Center, Reston, VA 22092 and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, US Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975. Four major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, Mineral Trade Notes, and Minerals and Materials. The last two are particularly good for news of foreign developments. The Bureau of Mines Employee Directory, available at all USBM offices, lists addresses and telephone numbers for all offices as well as same for all commodity and area specialists.

INTRODUCTION THE recent application of lineal analysis1,2 to the austenite-martensite reaction has made possible a quantitative study of the kinetics of this transformation during rapid cooling. Martensite range curves can thus be constructed to portray the onset of the reaction at [M.] and its subsequent progress as a function of temperature down to and below the ambient. It now seems in order to investigate other aspects of the martensite transformation, using this quantitative method of approach. One of the least understood characteristics of the austenite-martensite reaction is that of stabilization which has been defined by Troiano and Greninger3 as "a lowering of [M.], resulting from aging, without change in chemical composition of the parent solid solution." In other words, if the hardening quench is arrested at a predetermined subcritical temperature (Th) for a sufficient period of time, more austenite may be retained at a given lower or reference temperature (Tr) than if the steel had been cooled directly and rapidly to Tr in the first place. For the purposes of the work at hand, the extent of stabilization produced by the isothermal treatment at Th, is measured explicitly in terms of the excess austenite [(S)] that exists in the steel at Tr, over and above the amount that is normally present after direct quenching to Tr. Tr is conveniently taken to be room temperature, but this choice is not essential and is sometimes undesirable. The holding temperature (Th) may be above or below [M], and still cause stabilization depending upon the chemistry of the austenite. Stabilization has been found to occur in the presence of bainite4 and of martensite5,6,7,8 as well as in the absence of either.9 The phenomenon of stabilization is not concerned with (and may even be obscured by) ferrite formation or any other type of phase change occurring at Th that alters the chemistry of the remaining austenite. Such a structural change would obviously influence the martensite transformation during subsequent cooling. Stabilization, however, is more subtle; it appears to manifest itself without detectable variation of the austenite composition, whether in the presence or absence of transformation products. There are relatively few direct references to stabilization in the literature. The stabilizing effect of room temperature aging and tempering on the subzero transformation of retained austenite has been clearly shown in plain carbon,6.8 low alloy 6.7.8 and high alloy tool steels.10,5 Starting with the as-hardened steel, the degree of stabilization increases with tempering time and temperature through

This paper describes recent development work on the Wheaton-Najarian Vacuum Condenser for Zinc at Josephtown Zinc Smelter, wherein, to dissipate the heat of condensation, the "airlift" action of gases bubbling through the molten zinc in the condenser is utilized to circulate the zinc through an outside "cooling well" and cooling it continuously. AN earlier paper1 gave an account of initial development of the Wheaton-Najarian Vacuum Zinc Condenser at the Josephtown Zinc Smelter of the author's company. This paper is a progress report of further development work over the years directed toward improving the efficiency and increasing the capacity of the condenser. In this type of zinc condenser, zinc vapor with accompanying noncondensable gases from electro-thermic zinc smelting furnaces is passed upwardly through a mass of molten zinc confined in a refractory-lined U-tube. The zinc vapor condenses in the molten zinc and the noncondensable gases are drawn out of the condenser by suction applied over the surface of the molten zinc. The heat of condensation of zinc, amounting roughly to 1000 Btu per lb of zinc condensed, is absorbed by the molten zinc and, in turn, is dissipated continuously to keep the temperature of molten zinc in a range to permit effective condensation. At the time of publication of our first paper, we had at Josephtown Smelter five units of 69-in.-bore metal furnaces and one larger metal furnace having 96-in. bore. Each 69-in. metal furnace had a condenser with 22-ft overall length. The 96-in.-bore furnace had a condenser with overall length of 31 ft. Condensers were of circular cross section, with corrugated steel outer shell and carborundum lining. Diameter of these condensers was 32 in. inside the refractory lining. Molten metal in the con- denser was kept cool by spraying cold water on the outside of the condenser shell. Under good operating conditions, 22-ft condensers produced some 12 tons of metal per day; and the 31-ft condenser, about 22 tons. When the furnaces produced zinc vapor at higher rates, invariably the condenser temperature would rise to levels where excessive blue powder would form and accumulation of accretions in the condenser would be accelerated. We found that, with the system of cooling in use, we had to provide heat-exchange surface of some 150 sq ft to condense 1000 lb of metal per hr with reasonable efficiency. The wall of the condensers was made up of 5/8-in.-thick corrugated-steel shell having next to it several layers of mica and inner refractory lining of special carborundum shapes to fit the corrugation in the steel shell, and having a minimum thickness of about 2 in. Relatively low rate of heat transfer through the thick condenser wall and slow internal circulation of the molten zinc limited the rate of heat exchange between hot metal within the condenser and the cold water flowing over the outer steel shell. The thickness of the condenser wall was about minimum that we considered suitable for continuous operation. As we learned to operate the electrothermic furnaces with higher power input, producing zinc vapor at higher rates, it became apparent that we needed condensers having larger heat-exchange surfaces. Our 96-in.-bore furnace had 6 single-phase power circuits with transformers rated at 500 kva each and normally good for power input of 3000 kw.

A study of the mechanical properties of the alloys of copper and silver led to the discovery that the solubility of silver in copper was greatly different from that generally supposed, therefore some work was done to determine the solubility with greater accuracy than had previously been achieved. After the work had been completed, two papers were published' giving solubility figures which agreed closely with one another and with the work described herein. A detailed comparison of that work with the present will be given later. Preparation of Allots The copper used in making the alloys was electrolytic ingot of high purity. The silver was prepared by precipitation as chloride from nitric acid solution, followed by fusion of the washed precipitate with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate. This method gives metal containing at least 99.99 per cent silver. The copper was first melted under charcoal in a small electric resistance furnace and the silver added as pure silver, it being unnecessary to make any intermediate alloys. After thorough stirring the metal was poured into a mold of suitable form. The alloys contained between 0.008 and 0.015 per cent of oxygen. Small amounts of oxide were visible under the microscope, but it is not believed this would have much effect on the results. Copper-silver alloys are notorious for segregation, consequently a few experiments were carried out to find a form of casting with as little segregation as possible. A mold 6 in. long and 1/2-in. dia. was first used, and an alloy nominally containing 5 per cent silver was cast in it, while some of the same alloy was poured directly into water to obtain the maximum rate of cooling possible. The tensile properties of iodide vanadium were determined as a function of hydrogen concentration. It was shown that the presence of 10 ppm H is sufficient to cause embrittlement of vanadzum over a limited temperature range. The temperature of the observed ductility mininlum is approximately -l00°C, this being a function of strain rate and hydrogen concentration. The yield stress of hydrogenated vanadium is raised sharply in the brittle temperature range. THE present investigation was initiated to determine the effect of hydrogen on the tensile properties of high-purity vanadium as a function of temperature and the role of hydrogen in the brittle-ductile transition. Loomis and Carlson&apos; reported a change from ductile to brittle behavior in iodide vanadium at -110°C with a return of ductility at temperatures below -140°C. Vanadium wire containing 270 pprn of hydrogen was brittle at room temperature while wire containing 100 ppm was ductile under the same conditions. Roberts and Rogers&apos; reported a ductile-brittle-ductile fracture sequence in vanadium containing 400 to 600 ppm of hydrogen. Their data show that hydrogenated vanadium is ductile at 150"C, brittle at room temperature and ductile again at -196°C. Magnusson and Baldwin found a minimum in ductility in vanadium containing 80 ppm hydrogen from tensile tests performed at several strain rates. Information available on the vanadium-hydrogen equilibrium system4 is somewhat incomplete. The absorption of hydrogen is exothermic in accordance with the decline in solubility with rising temperature. The limit of solid solubility at temperatures below 400°C has not been determined due to the difficulties in obtaining equilibrium at these temperatures. Data on the hydrides of vanadium are rather limited. Roberts6 studied the structure of VD,., by neutron diffraction, and observed the ordering of the deuterium atoms below -65°C into a primitive cubic cell with a lattice constant about twice that of the disordered bcc vanadium solid solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vanadium of 99.9 pct purity was prepared by the iodide refining process6 for use in this investigation. This vanadium contained the following analyzed impurities; <20 pprn calcium, 150 ppm carbon, 200 ppm chromium, 30 ppm copper, 10 ppm hydrogen, 200 ppm iron, <20 ppm magnesium, <20 ppm nickel, <5 ppm nitrogen, 150 ppm oxygen, <50 ppm silicon, and <20 ppm titanium. specimen Preparation—Tensile specimens were machined from swaged rods of iodide vanadium. SINCE the presentation, by the writer, of the initial paper on the embrittlement of copper,1 the subject has been investigated further along two separate lines. The first series of investigations involves the "double-deoxidized" copper, while the second series is devoted to single deoxidizers other than those used in the investigations reported upon last year. The object of these experiments is to develop a type of copper that will show the minimum of detrimental effects after having been exposed to alternate oxidation and reduction. The fabrication of this material necessitates the use of alternate oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, at temperatures ranging up to 900° C. Following this treatment it is essential that the soundness and strength of the copper be unimpaired, even in sections of only a few thousandths of an inch in thickness.

THE object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the "bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a compre-hensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific varia-bles, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this "new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grind-ing from the standpoint of set and induced variables, with emphasis on the latter.

The Benedict-Webb-Rmbin equation of state was used in digital computer programs to make rapid determinations of natural gas equilibrium phase compositions. Mixture components were the nine hydrocarbons, methane through heptane. Comparative tests were made with data from field separators, plant exchangers and literature sources. For most tests made, the B-W-R equations predrcted component K-vallles, mixture enthalpies and phase aensities within tile accuracy of available correlations for rune-component mixtures: significant deviations were noted when mixtures contained components heavier than heptune. INTRODUCTION Rapid, accurate methods for calculating the properties of hydrocarbon mixtures are needed for predicting the behavior of natural gas processes. For example, because of the common use of two-phase separation methods in gas proccssing, calculations must be made for the density and composition of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases. In addition, predictions must often be made for the temperature and pressure changes associated with the flow of single- and two-phase natural gas fluids through heat exchangers, chokes and turbines. The complex nature of non-ideal mixtures makes rigorous calculations for these natural gas properties difficult and time-consuming. Natural gas properties have conventionally been determined with generalized data correlations. These correlations, such as the K-values presented in the NGAA Equilibrium Ratio Data Book, are usually based on some average property of the mixture and have proven to give satisfactory estimates for the properties of most oil and gas systems. Digital computers, however, have not only increased the utility of these correlations, but also have made practical the use of equations of state for calculating the properties of natural gases. Potentially, if basic pure component data are available, all the desired thermodynamic properties of mixtures can be derived from a single equation of state describing the mixture. Currently. the best equation of state for describing the behavior of pure, light hydrocarbons over single-and two-phase regions, both below and above critical pressure, is that of Benedict. Webb and Rubin.&apos; The equation contains eight constants which are determined by empirically fitting the equation to pure-component PVT data. Benedict and his co-workers presented the clevelopment of their equation as early as 1940.2 The B-W-R equation is a modification of the Beattie-Bridgeman equation of state and gives better PVT predictions than the Beattie equation at densities above the critical density. Benedict et al. made the equation applicable to mixtures by relating the mixture constants to composition and the constants for pure compounds. These authors, in a serics of articles in 1951,&apos; showed the accuracy of the B-W-R equation when applied to light hydrocarbons and their simple mixtures, and demonstrated the equation&apos;s utility for making vapor-liquid equilibria calculations. Since its inception, the B-W-R equation has been the subject of many papers. Numerous additions and modifications have been proposed,&apos;-&apos;,"&apos;-&apos;:&apos; the purpose of most being to improve the equation&apos;s ability to predict PVT properties of specific mixture systems. In 1959, Opfell, Pings and Sage summarized much of the work on the B-W-R equation in their book on equations of state." Since natural gases are primarily mixtures of light hydrocarbons, the B-W-R equation is a natural choice for an equation of state to compute both phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of natural gases. THE piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive pourer and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of froth 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an over-flow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are Dot oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it :is in this way that the blow-holes are closed it the low-carbon steels.

The nonuniform distribution of precipitate particles has been recognized as a leading factor contributing to the relatively low fatigue resistance of aluminum alloys. The structure of many of these alloys is characterized by narrow precipitate-free zones adjacent to the grain boundaries. Alloys with such zones exhibit a tendency for brittle inter crystalline fracture. The interrelation between this type of structure and mechanical properties was investigated in an Al-10 wt pct Mg alloy. It was found that deformation during fatigue occurs preferentially along these zones and cracks initiate there. In Al-10wt pct Mg, the zones were found to be supersaturated even after extensive general precipitation and are due to the absence of proper precipitate nuclei in the region near the grain boundaries. Cold working the alloy prior to aging improves the mechanical properties by inducing precipitation within the zones and also by jogging of grain boundaries. The mode of fracture is changed from brittle inter crystalline to more ductile trans granular fracture. THE process of fatigue is highly structure sensitive, with the strength of the whole often dependent upon some localized discontinuity, either geometrical or metallurgical in nature. Much has been learned about the role of geometrical discontinuities, e.g., notches, in fatigue, but with the exception of the effects of inclusions or the shapes of carbides, relatively little is known about the specific effects of discontinuities in metallurgical structure such as nonuniform precipitation. In most age-hardening aluminum alloys, metallo-graphic studies have shown that the extent of precipitation adjacent to grain boundaries is much less than that which occurs in the interior of the grains. The width of these almost precipitate-free regions, which are sometimes called denuded zones, and the extent of solute depletion within them, are dependent upon the particular alloy and its aging treatment. It has been observed1 that these zones are relatively soft with the result that plastic deformation takes place preferentially within them. It has also been shown 2-4 that there exists a tendency for intercrys- talline cracking in fatigue when such zones are present. It is of interest to note that Broom et al.2,3 were able to reduce the incidence of this type of failure in an A1-4 wt pct Cu alloy by stretching the material 10 pct prior to aging. In the present study, the effects of precipitate-free regions on the fatigue properties of an A1-10 wt pct Mg alloy were studied in detail, and the effects of deformation prior to aging on the nature of the precipitation process as well as on fatigue properties were also investigated. MATERIAL AND PROCESSING An A1-10 wt pct Mg alloy was selected for this study, because it was known that well-defined precipitate-free regions along the grain boundaries are readily obtained in this alloy after aging at 200oC.5 The starting materials were 99.998 pct A1 and singly sublimed magnesium of about 99.9 pct purity. The aluminum was induction melted in a graphite crucible, and then the magnesium addition was immersed until dissolved. Chlorine gas was then bubbled through the molten alloy for 4 min to degas the melt, after which the melt was cast at a pouring temperature of 730" to 760°C into a cold, graphite-coated, tapered steel mold. Since A1-Mg alloys are difficult to homogenize,5 special care was taken to obtain a uniform composition. Two-in. cubes were cut from the ingot and heated at 446°C for 30 min. These cubes were then hot forged approximately 35 pct in each of the three cube directions and homogenized for 16 hr at 446°C. Sheet specimens were then obtained by pressing 40 pct and rolling 35 pct per pass with reheating between reduction steps to a final thickness of approximately 0.10 in. The sheet was then solution treated for 16 hr at 446°C and water quenched. The age hardening behavior of this material at 200°C was then determined, and the results are shown in Fig. 1. The age hardening of this alloy when subjected to cold work prior to aging is also shown in this figure. Preliminary work indicated that extensive deformation after quenching was required to affect drastically the precipitate-free regions in this alloy, and a rolling reduction of 50 pct was chosen. For purposes of comparison the following three conditions were studied: a) Solution treated, quenched, and aged 20 hr at 200°C

A brief study of the effects of material and processing variations upon the tensile properties of steel formed from mixtures of iron and carbon was made in order to provide information regarding the properties obtainable in iron-carbon compacts as influenced by forming pressure, sintering temperature, and graphite particle size. Sintered steels formed from mixtures of iron and graphite have been studied by Stern,&apos; who investigated the effect of various percentages of graphite on compacts formed from electrolytic iron that were repressed and heat-treated after sintering. A further study, by Stern and Greenberg,l is concerned with the heat-treatment of steels formed by the car-burization of iron compacts, and Margolies3 has reported work on the simultaneous sintering and carburization of iron-powder parts. Glauch4 investigated the effect of various types of graphite on the properties of iron-carbon powder alloys but did not determine the effect of different particle sizes of the same graphite alloyed with different types of powder. In the investigation reported in this paper, powders typical of those produced by electrolytic deposition and the decar-burization of shotted steel scrap were used. The powders were mixed by tumbling in a jar mill with graphite powder ground to an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns (as determined by microscopic measurement). The properties of the iron and graphite powders are presented in tabular form as Table I. In order to obtain the maximum information from a minimum number of test specimens, the study was divided into two sections with one set of specimens treated identically in each section as a basis for comparison. In the first section, iron powder produced by the shotting and subsequent decarburization of scrap steel was mixed with 2-micron graphite powder, pressed at 50,000, 100,-000, and 200,000 psi, and sintered in hydrogen at 1200°C for the periods of time ranging from 15 to 120 minutes. In the second section of the investigation, electrolytic iron powder was mixed with graphite of an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns, pressed at 100,000 psi, and sintered at temperatures ranging from 1000° to r200°C&apos;. for periods of time of 30 to 180 minutes. By following this procedure an indication of the effect of the following variables upon the density and tensile properties of iron-carbon powder compacts was obtained: (I) forming pressure, (2) sintering time, (3) particle size of graphite powder, (4) sintering temperature, (4) type of iron powder.
