A UTILITY that has a large consumption of coal must insure an adequate and sound supply of fuel. The Detroit Edison Co., which has an annual coal consumption of about four million tons and spends approximately $32 million a year for coal, including freight charges, has developed a program for fuel procurement and for evaluation and selection of fuel for reliable and efficient plant operation. Fuel Procurement Coal Purchasing Division: The Fuel Supply Div. of the Purchasing Dept. combines all of the procurement functions in one group, which must maintain adequate stocks of fuel. In addition to its usual purchasing duties, the division also governs transportation, follow-up, invoice and freight bill, in cooperation with the Accounting Dept. The Fuel Div. is comprised of the fuel agent, an assistant fuel agent, a coal buyer and five coal clerks, who follow the movement of each car, initially approve freight bills and invoices, and file claims whenever there is a shortage of one ton or more. The fuel agent reports directly to the purchasing agent of the Company, and all major programs are planned jointly with the chief purchasing officer. The apparent individuality of the fuel section is necessary because of the tremendous volume of coal cars handled each day, sometimes as many as 500, which must be handled promptly to complete the fastest possible move from the mines to the plants. Determining Annual Coal Volume: Through the combined studies of a Production Dept. Load Committee and the Controller's office, accurate predictions of coal requirements for any given year are provided the Fuel Dept. from 12 to 15 months in advance. This is divided into the requirements of all individual power plants and central heating plants. This in turn determines the quantity and quality for plants whose specific fuels vary with the type of equipment installed. In the Detroit area, which has a high industrial load, early estimates of annual coal consumption usually are resolved at the end of the year within 4 or 5 pct of the original plan. Operating in a highly developed industrial area eases the task of estimating primary output; and, with the residential demands increasing in a steady and fairly well-defined pattern, the overall coal schedules are not subject to radical changes during any given year. Selecting Suppliers: At any time, but especially during or before an emergency, the coal supply factor must be made secure. This is particularly true in the procurement of utility fuel. There are always extreme quantities of so-called "bargain" coal available during the buyers' markets, such as recently prevailed. These opportunistic offerings may be considered a means of averaging down overall price, rather than as a steady and dependable supply source. Coal is purchased on contract from mine operators and sales agents who have proved reliable. They are not opportunists who desert for higher dollars in times of duress; they do not fail to fulfill contracts when markets rise or overship when markets dip. The progressive operator today who is willing to expend capital to improve quality and service deserves much more consideration than a matching of short-term pennies. When a company has a high volume of annual needs, all phases of the mine supply must be considered. The mine must be able to produce the quality required at a fair price and be able to sell oversizes of coal in enough volume to screen sufficient nut and slack. It must crush coal and sell mine run at prices in line with competitive nut and slack and be willing to do so when there is no demand for prepared sizes. Determining Price: The public utility is in direct competition with any of its customers who can, if savings are guaranteed, generate their own power. Today, to a greater extent than ever before, private industry must do a better overall job than Government-controlled operations. The price of coal must be realistically balanced with the price paid by almost all industries and the railroads as well. The supply-demand ratio in coal is not difficult to discern. This paper "On Coal" was published in three issues of The Western Gleaner in 1814. Name of author is not given. This magazine was started by Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, in Pittsburgh, Pa., in December 1813, and ran for about two years. Copies are very rare, and this one is made from an original in the Darlington Library, University of Pittsburgh. This is almost certainly the first general article on coal published west of the Allegheny Mountains, and one of the earliest in this country. ON COAL Its Natural History-Mining of Coal-Phenomena occasioned by Fire-damp-Method of Coking-Distillation of Tar from Pit-coal-Gas-light-Coal, a Manure I. NATURAL HISTORY OF COAL There are few productions of nature which present to the philosopher a wider field of investigation than pit-coal. A substance highly inflammable is found in the deep recesses of the earth, sometimes loaded with numerous superincumbent strata of hard rock, and extending frequently along with these strata through a vast expanse of territory. Though metals may be said to be inflammable substances, as they combine more or less rapidly with oxygen when placed under particular circumstances, yet the character of rapid combustion with disengagement of light and heat, seems to belong. principally to such substances as are derived either from the animal or vegetable kingdom. That this is probably the case with regard to coal we are further induced to believe, by the remarkable circumstance, that the chemical analysis of this natural production yields especially, though in various proportions, those materials which constitute essentially the vegetable. And if any thing was wanting to confirm, us in that opinion we might trace in a number of fossile substances the gradual transition of the vegetable into the state of mineral coal. This fact is so intimately connected with the natural history of coal, that we cannot think it superfluous to give it some farther development. Among the great number of principles which the chemist is capable of tracing in the vegetable kingdom, the presence of extract, resin and fibre seem to form the characteristical marks of plants.-If vegetable matter be boiled in water, and the water, after having been strained and filtered, be exposed for some time to the open air, a flocculent precipitate takes `place from every part of the liquor; which soon subsides to the bottom of the vessel containing it. This is the extract; altered, indeed, by exposure, and now no longer soluble in water, a change which is supposed to depend on the absorption of oxygen; and if, by any means the proportion of oxygen be increased, the extract gradually becomes of a darker color, blackens, and approaches to the state of charred wood.

Knowledge of a large number of the physical properties of the hydrocarbons is needed in the calculations and studies of the production engineer. Since experimental data on these properties of the individual hydrocarbons and their mixtures are available in only a relatively few cases, the use of generalized correlations has developed rapidly in the last decade. The generalized correlations of pressure, volume and temperature,' enthalpy2 and vapor-liquid equilibria13 on the basis of reduced temperatures and pressures, are outstanding examples of this development. These correlations are of particular value to the production engineer interested in the flow of oil and gas, since they can be used to estimate the conditions under which segregation of phase occurs as well as the composition, density, and relative amounts of the phases. The technique of using the correlations for such estimations has been published by several authors4 and will not be considered in this paper. A considerable number of data have been obtained to check the generalized pressure-volume-temperature correlations, and these data indicate that such relations hold for the hydrocarbons from methane to heptane. The accuracy is in general sufficient for most engineering pressure-volume-temperature calculations. However, the generalized correlations of enthalpy and vapor-liquid equilibria have in general been developed from the pressure-volume-temperature correlations by thermodynamic calculations and only a relatively few experimental data are available to check these calculated values. The calculations from pressure, volume and temperature are likely to lead to large errors in the calculated enthalpy and vapor-liquid equilibria. Thus, in the calculations of enthalpies, slopes of the pressure-volume-temperature data are employed, and determining these slopes can greatly amplify small errors in the original data. In the vapor-liquid equilibria calculations it is necessary to have the pressure-volume-temperature relations of the mixture, and the latter propertics are much more questionable than those of pure components, particularly in the critical region. Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Hence, the discussion of these discoveries will be limited. Bee County.—Three new gas fields were added during the year: Beeville, discovered by G. M. Church in No. 1 Wood on Sept. 21; Foley, discovered by Dirks Bros. in No. 1 Foley on Feb. 8; and Plummer, discovered by Hynes and Fisher in No. 1 T. M. Plummer on Sept. 2. There is much comment at present in the ranks of the oil industry regarding unit operation of oil fields and the benefit that would accrue if it could be extensively applied. It seems certain that, as an immediate corrective of the present situation, overproduction could be effectively curtailed with all the advantages of proper conservation of petroleum resources and with no important loss to anyone connected with the industry. Unit Operation in Certain Foreign Fields Many an oil operator in America would doubtless like to have exclusive control of one or more oil-bearing structures for development in accordance with the economic position of the industry and especially in accordance with the best production practice known. A few operators now have this privilege, particularly in certain foreign fields, and are following lines of procedure which show that they are aware of the great opportunity that is theirs. We find in an article by Professor Strigeoff,1 and in a paper read by Captain Comins2 before the American Petroleum Institute, the outlines of procedure adopted, respectively, by the Soviet Government for the nationalized Russian oil fields and by the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. for its fields in Persia. Comprehensive plans for the unit operation of other oil fields may have been described publicly but no such descriptions have come to the attention of the writer. New fields are coming more and more into the hands of single operators or of a few who control large activities and who appreciate fully the need for cooperative action and are willing to forego the lure of a large quick profit from high flush production in order to secure the advantage of better stabilization in the industry and a larger though more deferred profit by operating the field as a unit. Much can be done toward efficient development of an oil field controlled by a few operators who are willing to cooperate for that purpose, but the best result can be obtained only by pooling their interests in the field

The development of a water-input profile instrument based on the introduction of brine and fresh water into an input well with the electrical location of, the boundary developed between them is reported. Two methods are available in the use of this instrument to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of the various sand strata: the moving boundary method in which variable well bore diameters can be determined and/or cancelled out and the constant boundary method. The type of results obtained and the relative advantages of each of these methods are described in detail. Representative data are included covering the use of this instrument in experiments involving selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. In such experiments, this instrument has been used to diagnose the unfavorable distribution of water intake in input wells and also to determine the effectiveness of the resultant treatments. The data included also serve to illustrate the type of problems which can be studied with this technique. Introduction For ten years or perhaps longer a number of progressive water-flood operators have felt the need for some to to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of various strata in water-injection wells. The primary need is to diagnose unfavorable water distribution in various strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of the corrective measures such as selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. Previously described methods for obtaining this type of data were not considered entirely adequate.l,2 The profile equipment described in this paper embodies the separate introduction of brine and fresh water into the well at carefully measured and controlled rates and the electrical location of a sharp boundary developed between these fluids. At present this instrument is a research tool of value in determining the effect of various well treatments on an individual sand strata. lts primary use has been on wells in which different sections require different treatments (e.g., wells with an open sand to be plugged and a tight sand to be acidized)- It has, thus, made possible the determination of a rearrangement of the water intake of a well. The instrument can also be used to direct the treating material into a given zone. In completing a well the less permeable sands are shot more heavily with nitroglycerine in order to equalize the water intake between the permeable and less permeable sands. The extent to which such corrective shooting has been successful Can be determined by a water-input profile. The combined profile and well-bore diameters should also provide a method for determining the direction and effect of various selective shooting techniques. Equipment The essentials of the water-input profile technique for measuring the intake per foot of individual sand strata are the injection of a nonconducting fluid, water, at the top of the well and a conducting fluid, brine, through a separate string of

THE data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made, by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 lb. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the. average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an, advance of 56. ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range pre-eludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard.

In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. Troughs or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four trouglis placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratification. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder. In considering launder processes, one would reason that the conditions of extreme crowding under which stratification takes place in a flowing stream should effect complete separation in a single pass down a launder.

The anthracite industry can be divided into two parts—the underground, or mining, and the outside, or preparation or manufacture. To understand recoveries in the two branches, some of the history of the industry and the changes that have taken place in the past century should be considered. It is a long step from 1807, when 55 tons were produced in the Wyoming field, to 1917, the peak year, when 80,841,223 tons were shipped to market from all the fields. In 1820, the Lehigh Coal Co., the predecessor of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., shipped 365 tons in arks down the canal of the Lehigh Navigation Co. The Schuylkill field was not opened until 1822, when 1480 tons were shipped. The Wyoming field really became a producer in 1829, when 7000 tons were mined and shipped. It is well to note, at this time, the passing of the Coleraine colliery after a life of 88 years; in collieries of this age will be found the romance of the region, as well as the history of the changes to date. Mining Methods In the Lehigh region, the first coal came from the old quarry mines at Summit Hill; a little later the open-cut workings, or quarries, east of Jeansville, and near Beaver Meadow were opened. In the Wyoming field, it was necessary to resort to underground mining almost from the very first. Ashmead1 has described the changes in outside preparation methods, dl tending to increase the percentage of coal shipped to market. A description from the days when the lump coal was raked and screened out in the quarries or mines, to the modern breaker of today, shipping as high as 6000 tons of at least eight sizes of coal in an 8-hr. day is a very interesting story. Each size is a step toward increasing the yield from the property. With the belief that the supply was inexhaustible, the early mining was conducted with the thought of getting the maximum amount of coal on first mining. The superintendent was his own foreman and engineer.

A series of dilute Fe-Co alloy specimens were prepared from zone-melted iron. The iron used was given ten floating-zone passes in purified hydrogen. Alloying was accomplished by plating a gradient of metallic cobalt onto a 1/4-in.-diam bar of material from a pure plating bath. The deposit was radioac-tively tagged by a small addition of co80 to the plating bath. Alloy homogenization was accomplished by passing an additional floating-zone pass through the plated section of the bar. The final concentration gradient achieved was from residual to about 1000 ppm (0.1 pct) added Co. After homogenization, the bar was swaged to 0.057 in. wire and cut to tensile specimen blanks 1-1/16 in. long. Each specimen was counted in a well-type scintillation counter. The concentration of cobalt was computed by combining the normalized specimen counting rate with the known weight (measured to the nearest 0.01 mg) of cobalt added during plating. Fig. 1 shows the cobalt gradient obtained, exclusive of residual cobalt which was estimated by neutron-activation analysis to be approximately 50 ppm. Results of recrystallization for 1 hr at 750°, 700°, 650°, and 600°C with specimens containing 40, 170, 470, and 870 ppm added Co are shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5. Recrystallization was accomplished in a dynamic vacuum of less than 1 x 10 torr. The specimens were mounted and polished parallel to the swaging direction. The recrystallization re- sults show a radical coarsening of structure with increasing cobalt concentration. The coarsest structure obtained was at the 470-ppm level (at all recrystallization temperatures) with a slight grain refinement at the 870-ppm level shown. A more normal solid-solution effect is seen in Fig. 5 (60OoC, 1 hr) where the only specimen completely recrystallized is the one containing 47 ppm Co. Since the possibility existed that some atmosphere-contamination phenomenon might be responsible for the observed results the recrystallization series was repeated using sealed quartz capsules. These were filled with purified argon which was gettered during heat treatment on metallic titanium included in the capsules. The results obtained were essentially the same as shown. Another identical alloy was made using a 5-mm-diam bar of Westinghouse Puron. Specimen preparation and recrystallization treatment were also as described. The results obtained (see Table I) were somewhat erratic. Some coarsening in structure does appear at the highest cobalt concentrations. There is no apparent relationship between the coarse, columnar, directionally solidified structure of the as-melted bars and any of the recrystallized grain structures observed, all of which are much finer than the former structure. A recrystallization process can be most simply described as one of homogeneous nucleation of recrystallized grains in a cold-worked matrix followed by more or less uniform growth of the strain free grain into the cold-worked material.' An impurity element may influence one or both of these processes. Aust and utter' have shown that impurities strongly influence grain boundary mobility in lead. Moreover, definite recrystallization textures are produced by small concentrations of tin,3 while additions of silver or gold4 produce large boundary in-

In fact, several producers have experimented with practically all of the known desulphurizing agents, including both standard grades of the alkalies and special preparations that have been offered from time to time during the past several years. Some of these are regularly being used today in large-scale commercial operations, with good results. Also, it is the practice to treat off-sulphur casts in the blast-furnace ladle at a number of plants. It is not known, however, that anyone in the steel industry (American) has ever adequately equipped a plant for desulphurizing blast-furnace metal in an efficient manner as regular operating practice. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of correct equipment and proper handling for obtaining uniform and efficient results. As will be shown, at the temperature of molten iron the alkalies are instantly neutralized by any free slag present, dissipating their desulphurizing value. Entrained silicates are rapidly washed out of the metal bath by the highly basic soda slags and will be satisfied ahead of desulphurizing reactions with FeS. More or less of the reagent will always be used up through reactions with the refractory lining. Desulphuriza-tion will be limited to the action of the free alkali then remaining in the slag. Causes for the erratic results generally found with desulphurizing tests in blast-furnace transfer ladles would include, among other things, variations in the quantity of furnace slag coming down with the metal, and differences in the percentage of kish and entrained silicates in the different casts. As the alkalies instantly unite with any free slags or silicates present, these, with any kish coming off, both dilute the reagent and reduce the surface contact between the slag and metal, thereby retarding the desulphurizing reactions.

A NUMBER of proposals have been made for the hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from flotation concentrates, but as yet no process has been developed that has demonstrated an ability to compete with the present smelting methods under ordinary conditions. The treat-ment of copper concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods is in general similar to that used in the present electrolytic zinc process and involves roasting, leaching with H2S04 solution, separation of solutions, control of impurities and electrodeposition. While many of these steps are simpler and more readily carried out for copper than for zinc, a number of inherent difficulties have prevented the general adoption of the process. To compete with smelting, the following problems must still be con-fronted, although many solutions for their have been proposed: (1) con-duction of the roast in such a way that leaching will give an extraction of copper comparable to that obtained by smelting; (2) regulation of the ferric iron content of the solutions during electrolysis; (3) disposal of the excess acid regenerated from the sulphates formed in roasting; (4) eco-nomical recovery of the precious metals from the leach residues. The roasting problem is largely one of preventing the formation of copper ferrites, CuO.Fe2O, and Cu20.Fe2O3, which are quite insoluble in dilute sulphuric acid. These ferrites are apparently formed' to a small extent even at low temperatures and above 650° C. their formation is rapid1. While it is possible to carry out laboratory roasts in such a way that less than 5 per cent of the total copper is present in the insoluble ferrite form, a closer temperature control is required than can readily be obtained in industrial furnaces. The flash" roasting effects and consequent high temperatures that occur as the calcine falls from hearth to hearth in the ordinary multiple-hearth roaster are probably largely responsible for the inevitable formation of some ferrites. The result is that in a commercial plant the extraction of copper would not average more than 90 per cent in a single 10 per cent H2SO4 leach. This is

The transformation of was studied by isothermal methods. At all temperatures, the ß transforms quickly to fine grained ß" which develops silver-rich striations. At higher temperatures the striations disappear, the final structure being Widmanstatten a in ß'. At lower temperatures, the striated ß" is consumed by pearlite nodules of a + ß' which in turn form the Widmanstatten a in ß'. The transformation is unlike any previously reported for a eutectoid. AS part of a general program of study on the eutectoid reaction, the Ag-Cd eutectoid seemed particularly attractive because the ß phase which undergoes the reaction is another of the typical "electron compounds," AgCd, having the disordered body-centered cubic structure. This work deals with the eutectoid which occurs at 50.5 wt pct Ag, and not with the eutectoid which has been reported at 42.9 pct Ag.' There has been no work reported specifically on the Ag-Cd eutectoid which was studied. The only information available on this eutectoid is that work done in the determination of the phase diagram. For the most part, the terminal portions of the diagram, Fig. 1, are well established; however, the region from 40 to 60 pct Cd is still somewhat in doubt. The X-ray evidence'..' in this region is in conflict with the results of thermal analysis. X-ray analysis3 does not show a polymorphic transformation at about 240°C as indicated by thermal analysis.1,5 Even the X-ray evidence, within itself, is confusing in this region of the diagram. One investigator2 reports the ß phase as hexagonal close-packed and has found three phases in the one-phase ß field. Other X-ray investigators"' ' report the ß phase as body-centered cubic. The authors believe that much of the confusion resulted from incomplete homogenization of the alloys. It was found that it takes almost a week to produce a completely homogeneous two-phase structure at 370°C. Another possible source of error is the volatilization of cadmium from the surface and cracks of the specimen during annealing with the possible formation of a cadmium-poor phase. The only metallographic data available on this eutectoid alloy are those of Durrant1 and Fraenkel and Wolff.5 his information is very limited. The phase diagram chosen as most nearly correct is that in the Metals Handbook," which is almost identical with the phase diagram suggested by Durrant.1 Materials and Procedure The alloy was prepared from high purity silver (999.5 plus fine) and high purity cadmium (0.02 Pb, 0.005 Cu, trace Fe). The metals were melted in carbon under a nitrogen atmosphere. Some cadmium was lost by volatilization but by remelting several times and adding cadmium a 200 g ingot of approximately eutectoid composition was obtained. Because the CdO fumes are quite toxic, the exit gas from the furnace was led through a water trap to condense the CdO. The ingot was homogenized at 650°C for 24 hr, no attempt was made to prevent decadmiumization. This resulted in a narrow decadmiumized rim on the ingot which was removed. Filings for analysis were obtained from cross sections of the ingot. Silver was determined by the Volhard thiocyanate method,? cadmium by difference. The ingot analyzed 50.8 pct Ag at the top of the ingot and 50.7 pct at the middle and at the bottom of the ingot. This alloy was only slightly hypo-eutectoid compared to the accepted value of 50.5 pct Ag and was used for the isothermal studies. It was felt that further attempts to adjust the composition might be futile because of the volatility of the cadmium. The ingot was sectioned to specimens approximately 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8 in. These specimens were "austeni-tized" for 3 hr in air at 650°C to yield homogeneous ß and then quenched into a salt bath held at constant subeutectoid temperatures where the transformation

A graphical solution is presented for the equation v =v &-cU where vb is the volume of liquid b of density 6 that must be added to liquid a of volume va and density d, in order to obtain a heavy-liquid solution of preferred density dm for mineral fractionation. The equation is valid only for pairs of liquids whose volumes are additive, but empirical density-composi-tion data show that this condition is met over wide compositional ranges by all of the heavy solutions that are commonly used for mineralogical analysis. The chart is a nomograph which consists of two horizontal volume scales ad a vertical density scale arranged so that one volume scale occurs on each side of the density scale. All the scales are linear. For two liquids of density d, and &, respectively, each volume scale has an independent level on the density scale, ad the graphical solution for vb on the nomograph is obtained by construction of one straight line. The chart can be prepared easily to cover any density range with any desired accuracy by proper selection of the scales. Heavy-liquid separation of particulate samples is an indispensable analytical procedure in the mineralogical and mineral-process ing laboratory. Heavy liquids may be used 1) to isolate specific minerals in the form of high purity products or to fractionate samples into several products with density limits for petrographic, chemical, spectrographic, and X-ray diffraction analysis,'-' 2) to determine the density of minerals,'-l4 3) to facilitate the recognition and identification of optically similar associated minerals,15 and 4) to determine quantitatively the degree of liberation of ore minerals in ores and mill products at various limiting sizes." The preparation and recovery of heavy liquids suitable for mineralogical analysis are discussed fully in the literature and operational procedures and special equipment for heavy-liquid separation are described in numerous references.'747837' 13,18,25-42 Useful tabulations of heavy liquids for mineralogical analysis are given by Tickell, Mil-ner,' Twenhofel and Tyler,' and Lange and a very complete up-to-date list of minerals arranged according to increasing density is given by Mursky and Thompson. USEFULNESS OF THE DENSITY CHART For any particulate sample, the limiting densities selected for its fractionation by means of heavy- liquid separation depend on the respective densities of the constituent minerals and the specific objectives of the separation. In many instances, the densities of readily available and practicable heavy liquids do not coincide with those that are required, and suitable liquids of the proper density are obtained by dilution with miscible liquids. In the general case, one may wish to mix either a pure liquid (A) or a solution of two miscible liquids (AP,,) of known density with either a pure liquid (B) or a different solution of the two miscible liquids (A,B,) of higher or lower density in order to obtain a final liquid of the preferred density. In conventional practice, the latter is reached empirically by trial-and-error addition of increments of one liquid to the other. The density of the final solution may be determined either by accurately weighing a known volume of the final liquid,'' 532;4;40, or by means of I)a Westphal balance, 2)a hydrometer, a refractometer in the case of binary liquid systems for which density-refractive index data are available,15 4) natural or synthetic .indicators of known density, a pycno-meter. Like all trial-and-error methods, these procedures are time consuming and many require special equipment which may not be available, The purpose of this paper is to show that the volume of a liquid of known density which is to be added to another liquid of known volume and density in order to obtain a solution with an intermediate preferred density may be determined rapidly and accurately by a graphical method provided that the two liquids form ideal or quasi-ideal solutions whose volumes are additive.
