In the past few years a great deal of preeise information has been obtained about the relation of natural gas to oil production1. The improvement of our understanding has been of great value, both in prolonging the life of wells and in providing a much needed technical background for the legal problem of proration. But there are two principal aspects of the problem of production. It is necessary to consider not only the energy available, in the form of compressed and dissolved gas and in the pressure of driving water, but also the tenacity with which the sandstone holds the oil. The amount of oil that each sand condition will produce under given conditions of gas content should be determined. Hitherto the effect of the sand has been judged by a study of the flow of each well coupled with a procedure for extrapolating the production curve; hut, as is well known to evaluation engineers, such production curves are subject to changes that are not well understood, and often are affected by outside disturbances. On the whole, the concept of "potential production" is vague principally because the influence of the sand in production is not known beyond the simple ideas of porosity and permeability. The permeability is a quantity that has only inference value where mixtures of gas and oil or of gas, oil and water are present. Excellent studies of the production of oil from reservoirs packed with unconsolidatcd sand are available2, but these studies treat largely of small-scale analogzes to a producing field, and the conclusions to be derived from them arc necessarily of a qualitative character because it is not known in what way these miniature oil fields resemble large ones.

THE Magma mine, of the Magma Copper Co., at Superior, Pinal County, Arizona, is 68 miles east of Phoenix and 21 miles west of Miami, Arizona, on highway U. S. 180. TEMPERATURES AND UNDERGROUND WATERS Surface Temperatures.-The average surface dry-bulb temperature at Superior is 72.4º; wet-bulb, 57.4º; with an indicated relative humidity of 38 per cent. The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the down- cast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2º to 3º in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. Average atmospheric conditions are shown in Fig. 1. Rock Temperatures.-Rock temperatures on the deeper levels of the mine are as follows: [ ] There appears to be no difference in rock temperature for any particular horizon of the various formations or in the vein. Water encountered is always the same temperature as the rock from which it flows, and for this reason it is thought that the water is heated by the rock; not the rock by the water. The country rock apparently has been heated by the various intrusions, perhaps the vein itself, and has not yet had time to cool off. The geothermal gradient (Fig. 2) as indicated by the rock temperatures given above is 1 ½ º per 100 feet. Underground Waters.-The underground water varies from 350 to 565 gal. per min., depending on the rainfall. The limestone and other

The standard free energies of formation of several nzetallic sulfides have been measured by a reversible electromotive-force cell employing stabilized zir-conia as the electrolyte. The oxygen potential at the cathode was fixed by the use of pure oxygen gas at 1 atm. It was established at the anode by bringing to equilibrium the reaction between the sulfide and oxide species present. Thus, Gf: for the sulfide could be obtained from the cell potential and the standard free energies of formation of the oxides participating in the reaction. The results in calories per cam rnole for the temperature range 850" to 1100°C are: Use of the reversible electromotive-force cell having an oxide-ion electrolyte to obtain the standard free energies of formation of some of the more stable metallic sulfides offers a convenient experimental method that is very productive. It also avoids some of the problems inherent in the experimental methods' for such studies which rely on precise determination of gas compositions, particularly if these compositions lie near the limits of our capabilities for accurate chemical analyses. The reaction equilibrium between the lowest sulfide of a metal, SO2 at a fixed pressure, and an oxide of the metal has a characteristic oxygen potential. IT has been demonstrated that alloys in systems structurally analogous to steel undergo reactions during heat treatment similar to those of steel, and yet very little work has been done on such systems, particularly from the standpoint of isothermal transformation. The literature shows that most of the isothermal work has been done on copper-alu-minum alloys.'-3 One paper has been reported on a eutectoid copper-silicon alloy,' and one on iron-nitrogen alloys.' There are no published reports of previous investigations on the isothermal transformation of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. At least two papers have been reported on isothermal age-hardening phenomena in beryllium-copper alloys of lower beryllium content.5,6 No information on eutectoid transformations in this alloy is given in Rimbach's book, "Beryllium." ' This paper reports the results of an investigation on the isothermal transformation characteristics of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. Materials Used and Procedure The eutectoid beryllium bronze used in this investigation was centrifugally cast at the Ampco Metal Co., Inc.. Milwaukee. Wis. A master beryl-lium-copier alloy, purchased from the Brush Beryllium Co., was used to make the beryllium addition to the copper. The alloy was melted under a protective carbon cover and Centrifugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 920°F. Some trouble with segregation of beryllium in the melt was encountered but was eliminated by violent stirring during melting and pouring. Since very thin .specimens were used for the various heat treatments, only one casting of the four prepared was necessary for the complete isothermal study, thus eliminating any discrepancies caused by a change in composition. The analysis of this casting was 94.035 pct copper and 5.965 pct beryllium. A slight trace of iron was found. The castings were sawed into specimens approximately 3/32 in. in thickness. The specimens were first given an "austenitizing" heat treatment at 788°C, well within the single phase beta region, in a vertical tube furnace. The specimens were then quenched individually into an adjacent molten salt bath and held there for a definite time, after which they were quenched into water at room temperature. Temperature was held to ± 2°C in the salt bath. No homogenizing treatment was given the specimens other than the soak at 788°C. Despite the fact that this was a cast alloy, no evidence of segregation or coring was found in the microstructure of any specimen, either as cast or as heat-treated. INTRODUCTION The ever increasing demand for coal sues that meet exacting specifications has made necessary the installation of thousands of dollars worth of crushing equipment by the coal industry. At one time the operator at- tempted to recover as much lump as possible but today he is confronted with the necessity of crushing to facilitate the mechanical cleaning process and to meet the demand for a variety of uniform sizes. As a matter of fact, about 65 percent of the coal mined in the United States today goes through preparation plants where it is crushed and cleaned. One becomes more aware of the importance of the art of comminution when it is realized that practically all of the operations in mining are involved in comminution in one way or another. Whether the coal is mined conventionally or by continuous miners it is separated from the solid by a breaking, ripping or milling action which essentially amounts to a comminution operation. Even degradation resulting from material handling from the mine working face to the preparation plant might in a broad sense be so classified, Then of course crushing is usually necessary in the plant before the coal is ready to be marketed. THEORY Despite the various comminution operations there is a lack of satisfac- tory information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and their relation to the variable factors associated with the operation. There are certain laws and theories on mechanical reduction, such as those of Rittinger, Kick and Bond that are helpful and useful. The difficulty in developing exact mathematical relationships for specific crusher applications is due to the many variable physical characteristics found in coal. Hardness, as measured by the Hardgrove grindability index, is one parameter that has been used for years to determine the resistance of coal to comminution. While the coal properties as measured by grindability are complex, recent work has shown that a high correlation exists between the grindability of some coals and their petrographic analysis. Early research on the hardness of petrographic entities from an Illinois coal2 demonstrated that durain was the hardest constituent followed by clarain, vitrain and very soft fusain. Other research demonstrated that, for different size fractions of the same coal, a wide variation in hardness commonly exists. For example, the fines in about half of 39 coals studied were softer than their corresponding coarse sues while most of the remaining coals were uniformly hard in all sizes. A few coals contained fines which were harder than their coarser constituents. These variations in hardness give insight into the heterogeneous nature of coal.

[ ] THE present investigation started in an attempt to understand certain details of the decomposition of austenite, and of the effect of alloying elements thereon. As the investigation proceeded it became apparent that not only these details, but all the general features of austenite decomposition, could be understood in terms of fundamental physical principles. Since the direct applicability of these physical principles has not been previously recognized, it was decided to incorporate the original results of the investigation into a review of the general subject of the kinetics of austenite decomposition. This review constitutes the present article. An extended summary of the results is given on pages 27 to 30. This article, which deals with the kinetics of phase transformations, may appropriately be considered as a sequel to two recent articles1,2 from this laboratory on the equilibrium relations in medium alloy steels.

IN 1950 Kaiser Steel Corp. acquired control of the Utah Fuel Co., a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah, and large reserves of coal elsewhere in Utah and Colorado. Kaiser Steel later disposed of the noncoking quality reserves included in the property and over the past six years has developed a group of three fully modernized mines and a central preparation plant at Sunnyside. This plant is geared to furnish 1.6 million tons per year of low ash coking coal to the byproduct coke ovens at its steel plant at Fontana, Calif., and to its beehive oven coking plant at Sunnyside. General Problems: Topographic and physical conditions under which Utah coals are found differ from those in most bituminous coal districts of the eastern and central states. Utah coal seams lie under deeper cover, generally at steeper pitches; consider- able distances are burned along the outcrop and back from the surface of the outcrop. Usually the coal seams lie high up on escarpments, accessible only through deep narrow canyons or long rock tunnels and tramways. The topography at Sunnyside is particularly rough, with great changes in cover over the coal in relatively short horizontal distances. This is due to the cliff-making sandstones of the cretaceous Mesa Verde group, the coal-bearing measures being in the Blackhawk formation. The thick massive Castle Gate sandstone of the Prince River formation overlies the coal-bearing rocks and is suspected to be the chief cause of roof control problems.

This paper presents an experimental verification of some of the predictions made by one of us1 concerning the influence of certain conditions of casting upon the size and position of the pipe, and the position of the segregate, in steel ingots. The predictions which we have been able to verify are the following: A. That the pipe is shortened and the segregate raised: 1. By slow casting; 2. By casting with the large end up instead of down; 3. By retarding the cooling of the top, e.g., by means of a sinking-head. B. That the pipe is shortened by slow cooling. C. That the pipe and segregate lie in the last-freezing part. Our procedure was to cast ingots of wax (commercially pure stearic acid) containing a little bright green copper oleate (usually 1.5 per cent.) under varying conditions; to saw each ingot open along a longitudinal plane passing through its axis; and to examine the longitudinal section thus laid bare. In order to make the segregate or enriched part more distinct in color from the impoverished part, a very little red cerasine was added. An experiment which will be described later showed that the cerasine itself does not segregate markedly, if at all. Hence we may assume that the strong contrasts between the green and red shown in so many of our ingots are due, not to segregation of cerasine, but to that of the green oleate, in the wax which in itself is uniformly reddened with cerasine.

Abrasives include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (pressure blasting for example). They do not include abrasive tools, for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical-action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives, for example, many automobile and metal polishes. General Considerations The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example: in garnet for sandpaper neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains are wanted. For still other uses, great hardness is objectionable; for example, abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps. For the most efficient use in the more critical applications, the different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable; thus, while crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the papers are not at all interchangeable in their use applications. In the last analysis, the choice of a high grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work done by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive but the artificial abrasive may do so much better work than the natural one, and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost will be less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives. Abrasive Value Mineralogical hardness or "scratch" hardness as expressed in Mohs' scale is an important property in evaluating abrasive materials, but, as noted before, it is only one of several essential properties. The mineral hardness of pure crystal almandite garnet is about 7.5, but if the crystal is crossed by incipient fracture planes, or if it contains inclusions of other minerals, the apparent or useful hardness may be much lower. While the quartz grains in a sandstone have a hardness of 7, the bond holding the grains together may be so weak that the stone is valueless as a commercial abrasive. In artificially bonded wheels and stones, the hardness, strength, and character of the bond are fully as important as the hardness of the abrasive grains. Thus, in an overall consideration of abrasive hardness of loose abrasive grains, both "scratch" hardness and toughness must be considered. In naturally or artificially bonded abrasive stones, bond characteristics are a third factor, which is most important. The problem of abrasive hardness is further complicated by the inadequacies of methods of testing hardness and of expressing relative values. INTRODUCTION THE Bureau of Mines is investigating the problem of slag viscosity, its variation with the temperature and with the composition of the slag, and its effect upon the distribution of the sulphur between molten iron and slag, as introductory to a series of contributions to the theory of the metallurgical processes. The method of measurement, viscosity, apparatus, furnace and other accessories mentioned in this paper have been described fully in a Bureau of Mines report.1 THE LITERATURE ON SLAG VISCOSITY The viscosity of blast-furnace slag had not been measured previous to the investigation described in this report. A number of investigators have determined the "fusibility," or softening temperature, of slags by means of the cone method or, other deformation method, but these methods supply only limited information regarding the temperature-viscosity relations.-of the slag in question. Any deformation method that may be employed indicates only the temperature at which the slag attains a more or less definite viscosity, the magnitude of the value obtained depending on the method used. For details of the various methods used by different investigators, see, the Bureau of Mines paper already referred to. An isolated measurement by Doelter on a single mixture at 1,300° C. represents the highest temperature reached in the various viscosity investigations previous to those described in this report, in which results have been referred to absolute units. Arbitrary deformation tests have of course been made at much higher temperatures.

A GREAT number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into-account the presence of air bubbles.. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,2 involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the mineral particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable. The belief that adsorption phenomena might play a preponderant role in flotation3 has been rather widespread for the last 10 years. Unfor-

During 1967 wage settlements and strikes ran at a high rate and it has been estimated that union gains of 4 ½ % to 5% per year have been attained in many instances. When these events are coupled with the need to operate on lower grade and deeper deposits the need for technological advances in underground mining becomes obvious. Emphasis has been on ways to reduce the number of manshifts required per ton of product. Most significant advances have been made in rapid advance of primary mine openings, development of mobile, rubber-tired, front-end loaders and hauling units, high-speed drilling with rotary and rotary percussive units and a serious look at nuclear devices to break large volumes of ore cheaply. Boring Developments in bit manufacture and metallurgy have allowed continuous boring-type machines to be used on harder formations than was deemed feasible in the past. Hecla Mining Co. has been using raise boring equipment for drilling 9 7/8 in. diam pilot holes in raises which are later reamed in an upward direction to 48 in. diam. The machine used is a J. S. Robbins model 42R raise borer which has been used successfully to drill two relatively long 48-in. diam holes. The first was 520 ft in length at a dip of 76º, and the second was a 785-ft vertical hole.

A metal or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent papers. 1.2.3.1 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper .2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water. The previous papers described results obtained with ferrous and nonferrous metals. The San Miguelito Field of Ventura County, California, lies along the coast approximately five miles northwest of the city of Ventura. The structure is one of several in the Ventura anticline, a series of anticlinal folds trending northwest-southeast through the San Miguelito Field. The Ventura Avenue Field lies to the southeast along the anticline, and Padre Canyon and Rin-con Fields lie to the northwest; the series then extends beneath the Pacific Ocean. Production is obtained from the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age, and oil accumulation is controlled by faulting, lithology and structure. The first well in the First Grubb Pool was completed in November, 1931, and to date 48 producing wells have been drilled on the 276 productive acres. Approximately 685 ft of net pay are contained in the eight sand bodies grossing 1,220 ft of section. Production of oil to date has been 15,-600,000 bbl. A gas injection project was instigated in April, 1940, but was discontinued in September, 1949. This paper is confined to a discussion of the development and performance history of the First Grubb Pool of the San Miguelito Field. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY The San Miguelito Oil Field is located in Ventura County about five miles northwest of the city of Ventura along the coastal highway to Santa Barbara. It is located within sections 23, 24, 25, and 30 of Township 3 North, Range 24 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian. Surface elevation in the field ranges from sea level to plus 1,200 ft, and the terrain is extremely rugged. The structure is well defined on the surface and on the wall of the Amphitheatre Canyon where appears a so-called "text book" anticlinal section. The San Miguelito structure is an asymmetrical, elongated anticline about two miles long and three-fourths of a mile wide. The trend of the axis of the anticline is northwest-southeast. Fig. 9 illustrates the contours and major faults of this structure. Dips on the southwesterly flank average about 40 degrees, whereas the northeasterly flank ranges from 60 to 75 degrees. There are several faults striking generally east and west. These faults do not appear to affect materially the area of accumulation or performance behavior. It is believed that accumulation was affected by steeply dipping beds and extremely low permeability of the northeast flank of the structure. As shown by the typical log, Fig. 1. the San Miguelito Field is divided into two stratigraphic producing intervals. The First Grubb Pool comprises the interval from the "G" to "L" markers; the Second Grubb Pool from the "L" to "M" markers. The First Grubb Pool, ranging in thickness from 1,105 to 1,680 ft, with an average of 1,220 ft, includes approximately 685 ft of oil-bearing sands. The First Grubb zone consists of eight sand intervals separated by shales. The shale bodies separating the eight sand intervals within the First Grubb Pool are continuous throughout the major part of the structure and serve as an effective barrier. Many of the thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks within these sand bodies are discontinuous and do not affect well performance appreciably. The productive horizons in the First Grubb Pool are siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age. It is apparent from inspection of the typical log that the "G" to "L" interval might have been separated into at least six producing zones and selectively pro. duced. Unfortunately the electric log and some of our modern tools were not available or were in their infancy dur. ing the period 1931 through 1937. Not until 1937 when eight wells had been completed were there sufficient geological data to permit definition of the sand bodies. INTRODUCTION The two prior Seeley W. Mudd books on mineral economics devoted their final chapters to themes having to do with the future. In 1932, the last chapter in Mineral Economics8 was "The Future Value of Mineral Property" by J. R. Finlay. Both the first edition (1959) of Economics of the Mineral Industries7 and the slightly revised second edition (1964) closed with "Minerals and Man's Future" by Zay Jeffries. We are not inclined in this third AIME volume on mineral economics to ignore the tradition of the prior volumes. Moreover, it always is fitting and proper to close a book about the mineral industries by examining in a rather general way the challenges and uncertainties that are perpetually strewn in our path as we pick our way into the future. Unlike its predecessor volumes, which were written to acquaint the nonspecialist with the economic characteristics of mineral resources and to provide data about the mineral industries, this edition was also designed with the mineral economics student and practicing specialist in mind. Thus it is anticipated that it will be both a reference as well as suitable for use as a textbook. Consequently, this closing examination of our changing perspectives about mineral resources devotes some space to the past events and current status of mineral economics as a field of study. The fears and forecasts of the past can be a perceptive and usually deflating way to begin an examination of the future. As we look up and down the track of time from the 1975 platform, we find that many of the past views of the future were transient in character, others were imperfect in their prognosis, while others were based on fears that now seemed unfounded. But down through the years some of the observations or expressions of concern have a persistency which perhaps reflects some elemental characteristics of mineral resources. On these "truths" rest our contemporary understanding of the economics of the mineral industries. The uncertainties and priorities for the next 25 or more years, not surprisingly, have a somewhat different mix than those that seemed most compelling to our predecessors in 1932 or 1959. So it is appropriate that we review how the perspective of the mineral economist has changed over the span of a half century. In light of the particular interest of AIME on the role technology must play, it is fitting that we close with some observations on that topic. The factors involved in selecting, a drive system for a grinding mill, including gearing arrangement, motor selection, and electric-supply system limitations are reviewed. Equipment costs are evaluated on a dollar per horsepower basis and starting performance is analyzed, the latter making use of a recently developed computer program. The present interest in large-diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a 7 to 8,000 hp mill will cost from $350 to $600,000 which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance, and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functionsestablishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance. Large primary grinding mills can represent a major portion of the cost of a plant and the drive system accounts for a substantial part of this cost. These facts justify a careful analysis of the drive requirements and all of the factors involved in ultimately arriving at the best system for the lowest cost. A number of excellent papers have been published on various aspects of mill drives. The authors have used information from these papers in making a study of a drive for a 7600-hp, 32 x 12-ft autogenous mill. This was a broad investigation, including mechanical and electrical design, layout, performance, and maintenance considerations, and overall economics leading to the selection of the optimum system for that mill. This paper was developed from the study and includes information applicable to large mills in general. For a successful and economical application, the drive must be considered as a system and all of the components analyzed to determine their effect on the system. This requires the participation of the mill designer, gear, and other mechanical component manufacturers, motor manufacturer, plant designer, and operator. A careful analysis of the mill torque requirements is first necessary to provide a basis for selection of the mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of manufacturing limitations on the size and capacity of gearing available for these low-speed applications, an evaluation of costs for various gear ratios and configurations in conjunction with motor speeds is required. Consultation with the power-supply company is necessary to determine limitations on motor-starting disturbances and to analyze operating costs on the basis of existing rate structures and low characteristics. Finally, consideration must be given to the drive arrangement and its affect on plant layout, space requirements, and location of auxiliary equipment for the selected process. There are presently three basic schemes for driving a mill. The first is a direct drive by a motor operating at mill speed with no gearing. The second is by a higher-speed motor through a trunnion-connected gear drive. The third is by a motor through the more conventional pinion and ring-gear with the option of an interposing gear box to permit greater motor speed than pinion shaft speed. [(Fig. 1.)] Several manufacturers have or are presently developing motors which drive the mill directly without the use of gears. One arrangement has the motor armature intimately surrounding the mill shell-discharge spout or extension of the trunnion journal. The motor stator is then supported independently and surrounds the shell or trunnion-mounted rotor. Another variation utilizes an independent mill-speed motor connected to the trunnion by a drive shaft and flexible couplings.

This is understandable to a degree in the general case because methods of revenue estimation are highly dependent upon the specific type of project under consideration and the nature of the market served. An important contributing factor, however, is that developing estimates of future sales prices for most products is a risky activity which is less amenable to credible quantitative modeling than other topics in investment analysis. The specific subset of capital intensive investments addressed in this book- mining projects-is particularly sensitive to projections of mineral prices, many of which are notoriously volatile. Furthermore, the unique nature of mineral markets, prices, and product specifications occupies a major role in mineral project evaluation. Even here, however, authors have tended to offer little assistance to the reader in estimating project revenues. For example, the most popular mining engineering textbook for four decades, Elements of Mining (Lewis and Clark, 1967), contains the following advice on estimating future mineral prices (pp. 359-360): "Since the life of the mine will extend over a number of years the future price of mineral products must be estimated in order to calculate the probable profit to be realized. Current prices may be used, but it is preferable to take the average price for the past 25 to 35 years as it covers definite business cycles. Some engineers believe that a mine should make a small profit if its highest-grade ore is marketed at the minimum price during the past 35 years. Business

It is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have ally record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products— steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without caus-ing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1865, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel.
