Static soil investigations with more or less heavy loads and extensive borings do not always have efficient results; also, they are very expensive. The new geophysical method of dynamic tests described herein is simple and cheap and avoids several disadvantages of the routine investigation, thus forming a useful supplement to the older methods and even at times replacing various static tests. The fundamental principle of dynamic soil tests consists in the application of artificial vibration. The technique employed is essentially geophysical in nature and in some respects is akin to seismic studies. Artificial vibration may be excited by centrifugal forces resulting from eccentrically supported rotating masses. The reactions of soil and structures caused by these vibrations may be measured. Their dynamic constants, such as amplitudes, phase speeds, damping, reflection, and interference effects, can be investigated. This geophysical method has been used for several years with increasing success. The results of these tests, summarized at the end of the paper, indicate that this method opens a new field for the pkactical engineer in investigating soils (capacity and formation), foundations, dams and structures, and especially buildings that must withstand earthquakes. Methods Static Method.—The first and oldest tests to investigate the bearing capacity of the soil were carried out by static weights. The penetration of these weights, however, depends not only on the soil but also on the size and the form of their lower surface. The length of time the load acts is also important. To imitate actual field conditions, heavy weights and lengthy tests are required, both of which are expensive. Furthermore, the influence of static weights affects only the surface and does not penetrate into deeper strata, therefore substitutes and supplements for static tests have to include the time factor and consequently lead to dynamic investigations. In the West, capitalists have expended many millions of dollars developing the low-grade porphyry ores of copper. Half a dozen of these great enterprises have proved to be wonderful commercial successes. They have demanded improved crushing and concentrating machinery and consequently it has been developed. Many improved methods, cheap power, superior business organization, all these have contributed to this success, but the main feature is the handling of the material in enormous quantities, on a manufacturing scale. The mining chance of "striking it rich" has been eliminated by the manufacturing certainty of handling large quantities of material of known value, which while of relatively low grade, is available in large tonnages, assuring a supply for many years' run of the mill. Then the returns on the money invested are sure. The concentration of low-grade magnetic iron ores, separating the magnetite crystals from the gangue by the use of magnets, is a field of work in which the lessons taught by the development of the porphyry coppers can be studied to advantage. Large-scale operations, and the liberal expenditure of enough money at the start to insure the most economical operations, are the means of securing the desired results. The problem is to utilize millions of tons, and we may safely say billions of tons, of now worthless iron-bearing rock and to produce from it 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 tons per year of high-grade ore carrying 60 per cent. iron or higher; to take the lean material as found in nature, varying widely in iron content, and bring it up to a uniform standard of shipping ore. At present these ores are mined carrying from 25 to 50 per cent, iron, and the shipping product is brought up to 60 or 65 per cent. Fe. If future economies of operation make it possible to extend this process so that 15 per cent. iron in the crude ore can be treated as a commercial success, the additional tonnage available will be enormous. A 15 per cent. Fe crude ore raised to 60 per cent. Fe concentrate with 5 per cent.

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand there has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of -200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of dewatering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins.

SEVERAL authors1-6 have shown that, during solidification from the melt, the direction of formation of substructure boundaries depends upon the direction of heat flow and the rate of solidification of the metal. The most prominent of these observations was that a preferred orientation developed during the solidification of the columnar zone of an ingot which for face-centered-cubic metals was the <100> direction. Previous explanations1-&apos; given to account for this preferred orientation and the other boundary phenomena are all based on the premise that the phenomena are characteristics of the pure element. However, recent experiments by Rosenberg and Tiller7 have demonstrated that the preferred orientation in pure lead is the <111> orientation, and that the heretofore observed <100> orientation is due to the effect of solute on the mode of solidification of the metal. Teghtsoonian and Chalmers,4 studying striation boundaries in tin, and Chalmers and Rutter,5 studying corrugation boundaries in tin, showed that these substructure boundaries were aligned parallel to the axis of heat flow for slow rates of growth, and that the alignment varied from this direction as a function of the rate of growth. to approach the den-drite direction at high rates. Chalmers,6 studying the direction of formation of a grain boundary separating two crystals of different orientation, showed that at slow growth rates the boundary is parallel to the axis of heat flow, while at higher speeds it will deviate from this direction, sloping into the crystal whose dendrite orientation departs the most from the axis of heat flow. It is this phenomenon that allows certain crystallites in the chill zone region of an ingot to encroach on their neighbors and ultimately produce the preferred orientation of the columnar zone of the ingot. Since the previous explanations of this preferred orientation are unable to account for the recent observations,&apos; a new mechanism will be considered. This will lead to an explanation of the other substructure boundary phenomena as well. Investigations by Graf,8 Billig,9 Rsenberg,10 and others have demonstrated in a striking fashion that crystal growth takes place by the deposition of individual layers oriented along the close-packed planes of the material considered. As developed up to the end of the Great War, an airplane was essentially a mechanism of wood and fabric, joined and held together by metal fittings and fastening. The engine and accessories, wire for wheel spokes and other tension members, and the occasional use of metal for inter-plane struts and the shafts of surface controls required some metal, but essentially it was a wood and fabric structure. Attempts had been made to use metal for other purposes, such as struts in the drag-trussing of wing panels and for short interplane struts, and Junkers had produced an airplane of iron in 1915. By 1917 he was using steel tubes and duralumin sheets, securing noteworthy advantages aerodynamically and from the standpoint of weight and upkeep. He was a pioneer along lines in which progress is still being made. Principles of Airplane Construction The loaded weight of airplanes ranges from 500 lb. for the light plane of which we heard so much a short time ago, to about 40,000 Ib. The great majority of planes range from 2000 to 10,000 Ib. Of this weight from 15 to 30 per cent. is for the dividend-earning load. This percentage is so low that every per cent. saved on the rest of the weight increases the pay load from 3 to 6 per cent,. The economic value of every pound that can be saved in designing or constructing a plane is sufficiently great to warrant spending money on refined methods of structural analysis, materials of superior strength properties for a given weight, methods of manufacture which may make possible the use of refinements in structural design, and the like, to an extent unknown heretofore. The weight of the airplane, without fuel, oil and crew, and pay load, ranges from 50 to 65 per cent. of the total weight loaded for planes suitable for commercial use. It is doubtful if the structural weight will ever be brought down to as low as 40 per cent. for commercial planes. In the course of the examination, at the BureLu of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undcrtaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are, satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed." IT will be recalled that the first professor of metallurgy in the United States, appointed in 1855, never really gave any instruction in metallurgy and gradually turned into a professor of mineralogy. Metallurgy was included with mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1863 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby&apos;s study of thin sections of rocks under the micro- scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recognized department of, geological research as early as 1873. It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. Sorby himself did it in 1864, and Adolph Martens and Floris Osmond may be especially named &apos;, among the many European workers who, by the late eighties, had so developed the necessary techniques that they were able to photograph polished metal surfaces at magnifications as high

The finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; via., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line. The term "casting temperature" is rather indefinite as there ale several temperatures to which the term may be applied. Most writers who have mentioned casting temperature of steel have alluded to it in relative terms. The few who have given actual temperatures, including Langmuir, Burgess, Styri, and Bash, do not give full information about them. Their results demonstrate the efficiency of pyrometers used rather than aid the steelmaker. In order to understand and use the temperatures, one should know in each case what the steel was, the stage at which the temperature was taken, whether it was usual or not, and whether or not it was right for that steel at that stage. Ground movements in the zone adjoining an active cave were measured at four sites in the San Manuel Mine. Measurements were made to detect extension and inclination, basic components of displacement, which can readily be duplicated by mine personnel using relatively simple equipment. The displacements demonstrated the development of a zone of strain relief surrounding the active cave, within which the ground tends to migrate toward the cave, and extension cracks develop tangential to the cave. This expansion of the ground surrounding an active cave can be exploited to promote future caving; it also creates special problems with respect to the design of an effective ground support system for mine openings in the production area.

A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manga-nese in the problem of industrial preparedness against a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the conclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply with this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened (with a somewhat changed personnel) and exhaustive studies were once more made of the entire subject of manganese. A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted to the War Department in February, 1932. This second report is now herewith released for publication. Certain specific conclusions and recommendations as expressed to the War Department are omitted. Otherwise the report stands as prepared and submitted by the manganese subcommittee of 1931. From time to time the mining engineer will be faced with the necessity of having to make a haulage study to determine not only the most suitable method of hauling material but also the most effective and economical type of equipment to use for his particular operation. Specifically, this chapter outlines a general description of various types of haulage units and their components, guidelines on the selection of equipment, material both operational and cost wise to be accumulated, discussions on the various factors involved in the development of the estimated production and cost analysis, examples of the above, and the necessary reference material. This material and examples are given in such a form as to permit the engineer to proceed on almost a step-by-step basis in the determination of the applicable haul speeds and other related portions of the haul cycle and resulting number of trips per hour. In recent years, the analytical methods used for the application of the various haulage units have undergone a considerable change. Several vehicle manufacturers and a few of the mining companies employ electronic digital computers to speed up the calculations and improve the accuracy of production estimating. The haulage computer program simulates the travel of the vehicle over the described haul roads by calculating incremental velocities, travel times, and travel distances from the known torque vs. speed characteristics of the vehicle. This is, in a sense, a numerical integration of the vehicle&apos;s performance and, of course, varies for each and every application. These travel times are then combined with easily estimated fixed times such as loading, turning and dumping, spotting, and any indicated delay times, resulting in a total cycle time for the vehicle. Usually, the travel times comprise the major portion of the time cycle; therefore, the concise computerized calculations eliminate much of the guess work in estimating vehicle productivity. INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world&apos;s second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM&apos;s remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

1. The following is an abridgment of a recent report made by the author, covering an investigation of: (A) The necessary use of natural-gas compressors; (B) The effect of gas compressors on natural-gas field operating conditions in Ohio, with special reference to the working pressure relations of gas wells of one company discharging by natural rock-pressure flow without compressors, and adjacent wells of other companies, discharging into intake lines to gas-compressing stations. Tests were made at 107 different places in the counties of fairfield, Licking and Knox, Ohio, which required 7,000 miles of automobile driving, and consumed 6 months&apos; time. 2. A proper conception of the necessary use and effect of natural-gas compressors in natural-gas production necessitates a clear understanding of certain fundamental definitions and judicial doctrines, which are given herein. 3. Gas is a fluid composed of a large number of molecules which are vehicles of energy continually in motion, and havingan inherent tendency to get farther and farther apart. The range of motion of the molecules is limited only by the volume of the closed containing vessel in which they constantly move to and fro. The most distinguishing characteristic of gas is its universal property of completely filling an inclosed space. 4. Gas pressure is the result of the combined efforts of all the moving molecules in the mass trying to get farther and farther apart, that is, a mass of gas inclosed in a vessel expands and fills it, and being restrained from further expansion, it exercises a pressure against the walls of the vessel. This pressure is the same in all directions on equal areas of surface, as shown in Fig. 1. DURING July 1941, a study was initiated at the Boulder City Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines on proposed methods for the production of magnesium metal. The major emphasis was placed upon development of a process that required minimum reliance upon the sale or utilization of by-products to meet economic competition from processes already in operation. It was felt that only through the development of such a process could the nation&apos;s vast resources of dolomite and low-grade magnesite that are contiguous to large blocks of firm power be properly utilized. During the course of exploratory tests on electrolytic and electrothermic processes, it was noted that fused magnesium chloride would dissolve appreciable quantities of magnesium oxide in the presence of small amounts of boric oxide. The use of such a solution in an electrolytic cell employing a graphite anode and a steel cathode caused the deposition of magnesium at the cathode and the evolution of carbon oxides at the anode with minimal amounts of chlorine The original results were sufficiently encouraging to justify further investigation on an enlarged scale, since the process seemed to present advantages over other proposed processes 1.2 for the direct use of magnesium oxide in a fused chloride electrolyte. When work on a larger scale was initiated it was found that the addition of boric oxide to the electrolyte resulted in dispersion of metal and constantly decreasing current efficiency. However, by this time solubility studies had shown that magnesium oxide was sufficiently soluble in magnesium chloride melts containing no boric oxide to effect the same anode reactions, and development work was continued. Over two years of development work have been carried out, and considerable work remains to be done. It is desired to emphasize the fact that many of the difficulties met require a long period of continuous operation before they become serious enough to affect operation of the cell. IRON-ORE beneficiation is becoming of vital importance to the Lake Superior region, since only a few decades will be needed to exhaust the direct shipping ores even if generous allowances are made for discoveries of new orebodies. If the region is to continue as the chief source of ore to the steel industry of the United States, it must concentrate or otherwise beneficiate the enormous tonnages of available iron formations. A beginning along this line has already been made. About one-fifth of the total shipment, even now, is the product of some sort of concentrating process, while another fifth is improved in physical structure by crushing, screening, drying, sintering, or some other similar method. The amount of material amenable to these processes is limited, however; and, in order to be able to utilize the billions of tons of iron formations that cannot be so beneficiated, an intensive study of their nature and concentration possi-bilities is necessary. As long as high-grade ores are available in ample quantities, ore dressing is economically impossible, but as soon, as the supply nears exhaustion it becomes necessary. At first the products of ore dressing must meet as nearly as possible the same specifications as the rich ores in order to be adapted to the reduction processes already established. The future requirements as to quality will depend on the one hand upon the ability of the ore dresser to eliminate undesired constituents and charac-teristics in the material, and on the other upon the adaptation of the reduction processes to the product that can be economically supplied. A better understanding of the blast furnace and other reduction reactions, and improvements in the preparation of raw materials, should enable the Michigan districts to continue to supply ore for a long time to come. The study and testing of the iron formations necessary to bring a utilization of the low-grade ores, though requiring time and effort on the part of all concerned, should not be postponed, especially since the economic situation forces the use of the highest grade ore in preference to the leaner material.

After the explosion in the Black Heath pit, that company sent to England for some experienced miners to reopen the mine. The results of their work in this vicinity are mentioned in an advertisement for pit hands by the Mid-Lothian Co., as follows: "PIT HANDS WANTED.-In consequence of reports having been circulated of the insecurity of hirelings in the Mid-Lothian Mines, the Company deem it proper to make known, that the mines have recently been opened, and that not the slightest explosion from gas has occurred; the workings were laid out and are now progressing, ° under a plan furnished by Messieurs Foster & Hall, .two distinguished English Colliers, sent over from England to reclaim the Pits of the Black Heath Company after the recent explosion of gas-and the present under ground operations are now conducted under the management of one of the English foremen left here by these gentlemen, and supervised by Mr. Wm. Hall, who has under his superintendence the Black Heath Company&apos;s Works at present. The skill and capacity of those gentlemen, is fully evinced in their skilful reclamation of the Black Heath Mines, and their present successful working of said Pits; and their confidence in the safety of the hands in the Mid-Lothian Mines, will be seen, by reference to the annexed extract from the Plan left by Messrs. Foster & Hall for laying out and working the Mid-Lothian Mines, and from the Certificate of Mr. William Hall, as to the manner in which that plan is carried into effect. This publication has been deemed proper, as the Company are now in want of some ten or fifteen additional able-bodied, active Pit-hands, on hire by the year, for which they will give the most liberal hire. The Company have not hitherto spared any labor or expense, deemed necessary to secure the absolute safety and comfort of the hands in their mines; nor is it designed in future to omit any thing that can add to the security of their own hands, or the hired laborers of other persons-indeed they can, with great propriety, say, as far as they have progressed, that no mines in this country exhibit stronger, if as strong, evidence of general safety. The Company will receive on hire, no hands who do not voluntarily enter their service -and they request of those having hands to hire out, to remember that they will want upon hire, successively, at intervals of every ninety days, some additional four or five hirelings during the year, or to purchase, progressively, that number of healthy, able-bodied young men. "Owners of slaves at a distance from the Coal Mines, would do well to give some attention to the subject. There is no place in this country where slave labor commands as much, where their general health is better, and where the treatment and contentment of the slaves are surpassed. It is true that within the last few years several disastrous accidents have occurred, but from the scientific and practical skill attracted to the mines, these accidents will be of rare occurrence, it is to be hoped. For several years this Institute has recorded in its Transactions the various discoveries of potash‡ in America, and the successive stages in the development of an independent domestic potash industry. This paper is intended primarily to continue the record through the year 1935. In retrospect it is not inappropriate to note that public interest aroused in 1910 resulted in the production of some 1090 tons of pure potash in 1915, as a small beginning in the domestic inorganic potash industry, and that the infant industry thus begun reaches its majority this year, following a record production in 1935 of about 600,000 tons of potash salts and exports to no less than 22 foreign countries, including six countries in Europe. This production, with an estimated 200,000 tons of pure potash, may be compared with a production in 1934 of 430,157 tons of salts with an equivalent of 144,342 tons of pure potash. Mine and Plant Improvement During 1935, the American Potash & Chemical Co., at Searles Lake, Calif., began to reap the benefits of its previously enlarged plant facilities, which increased its productive capacity to 180,000 tons of muriate annually. The United States Potash Co., at Carlsbad, N. Mex., improved its operations by installing trolley locomotives and other haulage facilities and is maintaining its development headings two years in advance of operations, with projected plans for orderly mining for years to come. The hoisting shaft at its mine is now equipped to hoist at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually, and the refinery to produce 150,000 tons of muriate containing less than one per cent of impurities. The Potash Co. of America, at Carlsbad, N. Mex., completed the conversion of its plant from a prospecting to an operating basis late in 1935. The coarse-crushing plant, with a capacity of 150 tons an hour, formerly on the surface, was installed underground, with ore pockets

It has been suggested that streaming potentials are not nomlally logged because the streaming potentials known to be generated across mud filter cakes are substantially cancelled by streaming potentials generated in contiguous shale beds. Laboratory measuments of streaming poterztials acrons hand specirnens of shale have been adduced as evidence to support the suggestion. The experiments show that streanzing potential depends on the resistivity of the equilibrating solution and on pressure drop. Meizsurenlents were made perpendicular to the bedding planes of the shales. The mechanism of streaming potential generation in shale which the suggested cancellation theory iniplies has been critically examined. Conclusions reached are tested by comparing self potentials logged before and immediately after changing the resistil~ity (but not the weight) of mud in a borehole. The resultant SP change is found to equal the theoretical electrochetnical potential change, i.e., cancellation of .strearning potential is independent of mud resistivity. Since streaming po/entials generateal across mud filter cakes depend critically upon mud reistivity, shale .strearlling potential in situ must he equally sensitive. Using plausible values for the pemleahility, porosiy arzd compressibility of shale, the van Ererdingerl-Hurst approach shows that the pressure drop between horehole pressure and formation pressure in a radially honzogeneous shale is unlikely to coincide with the zone of filtrate invasion. If, perchance. this coincidence occurs with one mud a chatzge 10 a second must result in non-coincidence, i.e., a .YP logged in the second mud should show a streaming potenlial. The dilernrna may he overcome by postrrlating: (I) perrneabilities of shale7 parallel to their beddine planes greatly exceed their cross-bedding permeabilities; (2) a resistivity-sensitive mud cake of low permeability forms either on the face of, or probnhly in the lanlinations of, many shales. These postulates are examined with reference to the pres.sure and SP histories of the McClosky and Aux Vases zones in the Illinois Basin and some srcpport for them found. It is concluded that a definitive solultion to the streaming potential problem does not exist. INTRODUCTION Recently Gondouin and Scala&apos; published a contribution to the streaming potential problem which is notable particularly for the elegance of its experimental techniques. The conclusions drawn by Gondouin and Scala from their studies amplified those previously suggested by Schehck&apos;. In essence they suggested that the streaming potentials known to develop across mud filter cakes" are not normally observed on SP logs because they are largely cancelled by streaming potentials generated in adjacent shales. This suggestion appears so reasonable that many workers in the logging field will be prone to accept it. We incline strongly to the view that the suggestion is basically correct. Nevertheless, it is important to realize that the cancellation hypothesis in the form put forward by Gondouin and Scala does not appear to meet all the known experimental facts. It is the principal intention of this note to call attention to what appears to be a flaw in the relevancy of the experimental evidence adduced by Gondouin and Scala and to suggest an alternative hypothesis to remove it. The consequences of the new hypothesis are compared with field data which, we believe, are unique. A second but not less important purpose of this note is to emphasize that even the new hypothesis does not fully explain all field observations. Hence we conclude that further study of the streaming potential problem is required before it can be said that a definitive solution to it has been attained. The bare experimental bones of laboratory data on streaming potentials appear to be as follows. 1. A streaming potential is developed across a mud filter cake. This streaming potential is virtually independent of cake thickness but depends on the mud resistivity. The relationship is of the form, 2. A streaming potential is developed across a shale. This potential is independent of shale thickness but depends on the resistivity of the permeating solution if the shale has been first equilibrated in this solution. THE American iron and steel manufacturer finds himself to-clay barely at the threshold of enormous possibilities for practicing rational economy in the use of fuels. The fuel cost is by no means the smallest of items which enter into the cost of manufacture of iron and steel products, but the great wealth of this country in high-grade fuels, together with a protective tariff, has heretofore made fuel economy relatively unimportant. In Germany, the use of raw coal for the purposes of iron and steel manufacture has been all but abandoned and large sums of money, formerly irrevocably wasted, are now being saved. When scanning the literature of this country devoted to the application of gas power, but little information will be found on a subject which, however, is destined to become of considerable importance in the United States, namely, the use of coke-oven gas for the generation of power in gas engines. This lack of information can be traced to the fact that the regenerative by-product coke oven with its large amount of surplus gas is still far from having attained in this country the universal application which it has found in Europe. This statement needs hardy any corroboration other than the evidence of statistical investigations made by E. W. Parker of the United States Geological Survey, according to which only approximately 25 per cent. of the total coke produced in this country in 1912 was made in by-product coke ovens, whereas 75 per cent. was produced in bee-hive ovens. This entailed the enormous loss of over $80,000,000 in non-recovered by-products, such as gas, tar, and ammonia, without considering the substantial loss due to the non-recovery of benzol from the coal. There are two more or less distinct fields of application of the by-product coke oven: one, to furnish as the main product metallurgical coke of specified quality, and surplus coke-oven gas as the by-product, and the other, to carbonize high-volatile coals, and thus produce as the main product large quantities of gas, high in heat value and rich in illuminants, adapted primarily for domestic heating and lighting, while domestic coke becomes the by-product.
