(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give, a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz.. during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. A description of the geology of the district will be-found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in the May, 1915, Bulletin of the Institute. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent 2.35 S, percent 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton 0.05 CaO, per cent 0.5 Au None K202, per cent 4.0 Fe, per cent 1.5 SiO2, per cent 70.0 A120,, per cent 13.0 The leaching of the ore direct was early dismissed from consideration for the following reasons: 1. The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total recovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable.

THE free-swelling index, a numerical value for the free-swelling properties of coal, is being used to an increasing extent in specifying coal for burning in various types of equipment. The empirical standard ASTM method for determining this index uses, as a source of heat, a gas burner which requires frequent calibration because gas pressures are not constant, relatively small changes in gas pressure resulting in rather wide variations in the temperature attained in a crucible and thus in the resultant size of the coke button. Furthermore, the quartz crucibles specified for the test are not standard equipment, and relatively small variations in dimension and wall thickness from those specified often result in rather wide variations in the resultant size of the button.

The system Pu-Ce-(Pu,Ce)Co2 has been investigated by thermal, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. The principal characteristics of this system were found to be: 1) a "eutectic" valley extending across the phase diagram from the 6 Pu/Pu3 Co eutectic at 408°C to the 7 Ce/Ce24Co11 eutectic at 42Z°C, the maximum temperature in the valley being 443°C; 2) three ternary inter mediate phases, each having an appreciable mutual solid solubility for plutonium and cerium; 3) eleven four-phase equilibria comprising one eutectic, four peritectics, and six Class II reactions; 4) a pseudobinary section between the ternary phase A and the y Ce solid solution, and another such section between the 6 Pu solid solution and the 77 phase (Pu3 CO) containing cerium in solid solution. ALLOYS of plutonium that are completely molten at temperatures in the vicinity of 500°C are of interest for use in the liquid state as fast reactor fuels. Since exploratory work1,2 on Pu-Ce-Co alloys had indicated that a "eutectic" valley extended across the ternary system between the Pu-co[6 Pu/n (Pu3co)] and the Ce-CO[? Ce/? (ce24co11)] binary eutectics, thus allowing alloys of any plutonium concentration to be selected within the temperature limitation, the present investigation was begun for the purpose of accurately defining the "eutectic" valley. However, when the existence of three ternary intermediate phases and the consequent complexity of the liquid-solid equilibria were discovered, the investigation was expanded to cover the complete system, except for the corner between the isomorphous series PuCo2-CeCo2 and pure cobalt. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The purities of the alloy components are given in Table I. Alloy buttons, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared by arc melting the accurately weighed components (±0.1 mg) under a purified He-Ar atmosphere. Weight loss as a result of melting was usually less than 1 part in 1000; therefore, the buttons were not chemically analyzed. One half of each button was re-melted by induction heating in vacuo in a magnesia crucible and furnace-cooled, so as to produce a somewhat coarser microstructure than that of the rapidly cooled arc-melted button. About 20 g of each alloy to be examined by thermal analysis were remelted in vacuo in a tantalum crucible of the inverted thermocouple well type. The thermal, X-ray diffraction, heat treating, and micrographic methods used in this investigation were essentially the same as have been described in earlier reports.3,4 Two etchants for these alloys were found to be satisfactory: A) 8 (parts by volume) orthophosphoric acid, 5 ethanol, and 5 glycol; B) 7 tetraphosphoric acid, 36 water, and 57 2-ethoxyethanol. Etchant A was used at 5 to 6 v for 15 to 20 sec, and etchant B was used at 10 v for 10 sec. 2) THE LIMITING BINARY SYSTEMS 2.1) Plutonium-Cerium. The phase relationships of this system have been investigated by Ellinger, Land, and Cramer,5 and by Selle and Etter.6 The over-all agreement of their phase diagrams is good, but there are some discrepancies in the positions of some phase

Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO3), brucite (Mg[OH]2), dolomite (CaMg[C03]2), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe]2Si04), talc (H2Mg3[Si03]4), and serpentine (H4Mg3Si2O9). These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia-containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with seawater or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombohedral carbonates which includes calcite (CaC03), siderite (FeCO3), and rhodochrosite (MnCO3) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgCO3-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO.. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. In any mining district where benefication of the ores is practiced, one can usually observe several types of flow sheets even though the various producers are milling ore from the same geological formations. It is obviously impossible to describe all the mills in the Porcupine district. However, the following description of some of them is of particular interest in that it shows where one mill has paid particular attention to corduroy blanket practice; one to gravity concentration of sulfides for intensive cyanidation of the values therein contained; one to flotation of values and cyanidation of this product only; and others where small variations of standard all-slime cyanidation practice prevail. In all cases it will be seen that cyanidation is the basic principle. Discussions involving the difference in the flow sheets and the reasons for them will always be of value to those interested in the art. The author of this article, however, believes that such discussions should originate from the operators of the mills under discussion. For this reason no comparisons or discussion will be included in the description of the mills mentioned. Should any reader of this article obtain information therefrom which will be of value to him in helping to solve his own particular problems, the author will consider that the article has satisfactorily served its purpose. All values mentioned throughout this article are based on the value of gold at $20.67 per ounce. Coniaurum Mines, Limited The ore of the Coniaurium mines consists of a mineralized schist and quartz containing about 2.5 per cent sulfides. Owing to the low grade of ore developed in the mine, extreme care has had to be exercised throughout the entire mining and milling operation in order that an operating profit might be obtained. The management, however, has been able to keep costs down, with the result that at present the outlook for the property is considerably brighter than it has been in the past. During the years when Americans were most active in investigations of the many substances containing nitrogen or ammonia, viz.: 1869 to 1875, my connection with certain chemical industries led me to experiments in the direction of the recovery of wastes from coal-gases. I take from my notes such memoranda as I think will be of interest, in the hope that some benefit may be derived therefrom by engineers at present attempting to utilize the waste products from coke-oven and blast-furnace gases. An examination of the conditions governing the manufacture of gas along the Atlantic seaboard, and an intimate knowledge of the mine-products used by the different large works, naturally led me at first to consider the well-known foreign methods of concentrating the available soluble salts in a modicum of water. The result was sufficiently promising to warrant a full line of experiments. At that time, no attention seemed to have been paid to the values of " gas-liquors." Nearly every gas-works in the United States wasted its wash-water in the sewers. The nitrogen in bituminous coals varies in quantity from 0.75 to 1.50 per cent. of the total weight. The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B.C. Limited is in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia. It is on Cadwalleder Creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. Interests identified with the present company installed a small amalgamation plant on the property in 1924, consisting of a jaw crusher, Bryan mill and amalgamation plates, in which 75 per cent extraction was made on mill feed averaging 1.0 oz. gold per ton, the tailing being stacked for future treatment. That plant was operated until 1928, when the present company was formed and a 100-ton continuous counter current decantation cyanide plant was built. A second unit, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons daily, was added in 1932 and put into operation during September of that year. When handling ore comparatively free from slow-settling material, the combined capacity of the two units is 400 tons, the original plant now handling about 140 tons maximum. Production to date, from Pioneer, has been about $6,500,000, the present monthly production being better than $250,000 from about 370 tons ore daily, the recovery being 97 per cent. During the fiscal year ending March 31, 1934, a total of 112,936 tons ore and old amalgamation tailing was milled, the mill feed averaging 0.7670 oz. gold and the recovery amounting to 0.7422 oz. gold per ton, or 96.77 per cent. Milling costs, including refining and mint charges, during this period, amounted to $1.45 per ton of ore. Since the building of the first unit of the cyanide plant in 1928, direct cyanidation has been employed, no attempt being made to remove coarse gold from the circuit, other than that cleaned up from the grinding mills during relining and from the classifiers, as occasions permit. In the hope of still further increasing recovery, researches are going forward at this time with the view to removing some of the sulfides after primary grinding, the expectation being that selective treatment of this more refractory portion of the ore may hold economic possibilities.

It has also appeared that the behavior of the zinc cell is the best and surest check on the correctness and thoroughness of the purification methods used, because it indicates the presence of both current impurities and cumulative impurities derived from the leaching of the ore; it also indicates whether these impurities are current or cumulative, at least in so far as they are of serious importance commercially.

THE poor high-temperature oxidation resistance of the refractory metals becomes an important problem as higher operating temperatures are sought. A meaningful analysis of their oxidation behavior requires a knowledge of the phases that can appear during oxidation as well as their relative stability. Although several extensive investigations have been carried out to obtain this information for the W-0 system,1-10 serious inconsistencies still remain. First, the standard free energies of formation (AG°) determined in recent studies which used the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique6,7,9 differ significantly from those obtained primarily from gas equilibration measurements.1,3,4,10 The disagreement is especially large for the highest oxides. These data have been used to predict the decomposition temperatures of WO2. 72 and WO2.90.1 A considerable extrapolation is required, resulting in a large uncertainty in the decomposition temperatures. Second, Bousquet and perachon3 have presented convincing evidence, ob- tained by gas equilibration measurements, in support of the long-contested existence of W30. Phillips and chang,ll on the other hand, were not able to observe this phase under similar experimental conditions. The purposes of this work, which is part of a continuing investigation of the W-Mo system, were to resolve the discrepancies between the AGO measured by gas equilibration and solid electrolyte galvanic cell techniques, to extend the latter measurements to lower temperatures, to redetermine the WO2.72 and WO2.90 decomposition temperatures, and to apply the more sensitive electromotive-force method to the question of the existence of W3O. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The measurement of ?G° of reaction by the use of calcia-stabilized zirconia solid electrolyte galvanic cells has been described previously.12 The method is based on the measurement of the difference in chemical potential of oxygen between an electrode containing the two oxides of interest and a reference electrode of known oxygen activity. Two different types of cell holders were used in this study. The first type of apparatus has been described earlier." It consisted of two solid electrodes separated by a disc of electrolyte. Both electrodes were exposed to the same stream of purified helium. With this design a gaseous transport of oxygen between the two electrodes is possible. The second type of apparatus, which has also been described earlier,14 effectively separated the two electrode atmospheres. It utilized a closed-end impervious, calcia-stabilized zirconia tube that was open to the atmosphere. The tube served as an electrolyte for the cell and provided a means for separating the anode compartment, which was held under a static vacuum, from an air reference cathode. The cells and reactions of interest are described in Table I. High-purity tungsten metal was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and the Allied Chemical Corp. Table II contains an analysis of each material. WO3 was prepared by oxidizing the metal in air at approximately 600°C in high-purity recrystallized alumina boats and by the dehydration of reagent-grade tungstic acid in alundum boats. The two methods of preparing WO3 resulted in slightly different purities.

A method is described whereby the true financial value of each constituent of each concentrate can be calculated. Each value is then compared with what this value would be in a perfect separation. The difference in each case represents the loss incurred by each aspect of an inefficient separation. The relative magnitudes of these losses indicate those avenues of plant investigation and research that offer the highest potential reward. The metallurgical efficiency of a concentration operation is difficult to express because there are two criteria of performance, namely, grade and recovery. Neither of these alone gives any indication of the effectiveness of an operation and, if they are combined in some formula, it must be empirical and unreliable because of many external factors. Since milling is an operation performed as one step in the most profitable overall method of producing a metal or other end product, the main objective of mill operation should be to make a maximum contribution to this maximum profit. When concentrates are sold to custom smelters, the income from the operation, and the costs, may be calculated. When concentrates are further processed by another division of the same company, and there is no formal financial relationship between, say, the milling and smelting divisions of the company, the mill superintendent's job is less well defined. But even so, if the mill superintendent works as though he were selling his concentrates, and uses reasonable, if fictitious, conditions of sale, then he can get a good indication of the effectiveness of his operation by calculating his "Economic Recovery". ECONOMIC RECOVERY This is a method used as a basis of operation by several mills and has been described in the literature. Very briefly, the "standard" of operation is taken as that of a mill separating the ore into perfectly pure concentrates with 100% recovery of each mineral in its respective concentrate. For example, a 4%Pb, 4% Zn ore (galena and sphalerite), would provide a lead concentrate weighing 4.62% of the feed and assaying 86.6% Pb and a zinc concentrate weighing 5.97% of the feed and assaying 67.1 % zinc. These perfect concentrates are (hypothetically) shipped to the appropriate smelters, freight and treatment charges and payments calculated, and the net return obtained. This is the optimum financial return for the operation of the mill and is used as the standard. Now the return for the actual, real-life, mill operation is calculated in the same way, and the ratio of the two is termed the Economic Recovery. Many additions and modifications may be made in any particular case. For example, if the zinc mineral is marmatite, the optimum grade of the zinc concentrate may be set lower than 67.1%. If silver is present, it will be recovered 100% in the lead concentrate in the perfect operation. Similarly, cadmium will be recovered 100% with the sphalerite. Mr. Weiss' paper' mentions a case where, because of extremely fine intergrowth between the valuable mineral, chalcocite, and pyrite, the optimum grade of copper concentrate was taken as 45% Cu instead of the theoretical 80%. Each operation will present its own possibilities in this way.

Anomalous geological features in the coal and surrounding strata of a mine in northern West Virginia have fractured and deformed an inherently weak roof rock prior to mining. Horizontal stresses, as much as six times greater than overburden related horizontal stresses, have induced cutter roof failure. This failure was distinguishable from rock deformation associated with geological anomalies because it was induced by mining. The characterization of these features has allowed for the prediction of zones of unstable roof rock and the determination of failure trends on gateroad stability. Geological anomalies included clastic dikes and a narrow zone of sandstone roof. Clastic dikes, representing intrusions of shale and claystone, were invariably accompanied by local roof rock instability, and often formed the boundaries of roof falls. Shale was the dominant roof lithology except where a small sandstone occurred in the northwest portion of the longwall mining area. The sandstone occurs in two phases: a sandstone-filled channel, 5-m- thick and 60-m-wide, which eroded and replaced the shale roof and the upper part of the coalbed; and a sheet sandstone unit which was crossbedded to interbedded with the underlying shale. Horizontal stresses are naturally relieved through the initiation of cutter roof failure. This failure may extend from a few meters to several tens of meters horizontally, and from a few centimeters to several meters vertically. Orientations of entries and crosscuts has a greater influence on the direction and total length of cutter roof failure at the rib-roof intersection than does the principal directions of the in situ horizontal stresses. Seventy-four percent of the cutter roof failures occurred along the rib-roof intersection. Orientations of cutter roof failure away from the rib- roof intersection were clustered in the north-south direction and may have been influenced by the horizontal stress field.

At the beginning of a Henry M. Howe lecture it seems fitting to refer to Howe's great contributions to steel metallurgy, and particularly to the literature thereof. Most of my predecessors in this role have been able, from their association with him, to give direct testimony as to his great services; but although connected with him for years in a business way, I am less familiar with what might be called his academic side, except as it is embodied in his utterances, written and oral. Howe was adept in his genial way in extracting information in any line which, at the time, was of interest to him. In a technical lecture one expects as a rule new knowledge-—something about recent advances relating to the subject. On this occasion, however, I will ask you to go back with me to the primary department of steel lore, as the title of my lecture shows, to review the more fundamental features in that field for the purpose of seeking some gaps which we can fill and so give the subject renewed interest. In thus going back one must inevitably repeat many familiar facts, but that seems to be necessary in order to reach a clear understanding of the unrecorded matters. The full interpretation of a steel analysis is at present unattainable, though much progress toward that end has been made. The ultimate analysis, giving the percentages of the five commonly determined elements, does indeed usually give a fair idea of what the steel is, and is ordinarily enough, with knowledge of its history and physical condition, to enable it to be assigned to some purpose or use for which it is reasonably suitable. Rut discrepancies arise. Every maker and every User of steel knows, from at least occasional examples in his own experience, that the ultimate analysis is insufficient by itself to enable one to tell positively, from its interpretation, either the mechanical properties of the steel or its adaptability to the purpose for which it was made. Further, if, while having the specified composition, it is abnormal or unsatisfactory, why it is so. Good, bad and indifferent steels may have substantially the same ultimate analysis.

A method is described for producing single crystals of high-purity beryllium, Be-4.37pct Cu, and Be-5.24 pct Ni. These crystals were prepared for testing in compression parallel to the [0001] by orienting and lapping to within ±3' of arc of the (0001). Microstrain testing apparatus is described along with c axis compression results for ingot purity beryllium, twelve-zone-pass material, and the above-mentioned alloys. Results show no measurable plasticity for the ingot purity material from -196" to 400°C, although some surface traces of (1122) slip was observed at 200°C and above. The twelve-zone-pass material shows substantial microstrain plasticity at 220°C with slip on (1122). Both alloys show significant plasticity at room temperature and above with slip also on (1122) planes. THE two slip systems which normally operate during the plastic deformation of beryllium in the vicinity of room temperature are:' basal slip (0001)(1120) and prism slip . Pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane has been reported for elevated temperatures,'-a but occurs near room temperature only at very high stresses.~ A summary of the available data on the effect of temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for slip on these systems has been compiled by Conrad and Perlmutter.~ It has been postulated6'7 that one of the principal factors contributing to the brittleness of poly crystalline beryllium at temperatures below about 200°C is the difficulty of operating pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane. Hence, detailed information on the operation of such a slip system is important to understanding the brittleness of beryllium. The operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is best accomplished in beryllium by compressing single crystals in a direction parallel to the c axis. In such a test the resolved macroscopic shear strzss on the basal and prism planes is zero and (1012) twinning which is favored by tension along the c axis does not occur. Hence, in c axis compression of beryllium the normal deformation modes are inhibited and the operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is favored. In the present investigation, c axis compression tests were performed on beryllium single crystal as a function of temperature (77" to 700°K), purity (commercial and twelve zone pass), and alloy content (4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni). Presented here is a description of the test techniques employed and the gross mechanical behavior observed. A detailed analysis of the slip traces developed on the surfaces of the deformed specimens during these tests and the results of electron transmission studies of the deformed crystals are given in a separate paper.B PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Preparation. Single crystals about 1 in. diam were prepared of the following materials: commercial-purity beryllium, high-purity beryllium, and two beryllium alloys, one with 4.37 wt pct Cu and the other with 5.24 wt pct Ni. The commercial-purity single crystals were obtained by cutting specimens from large-grained ingot of Pechiney SR material, which is approximately 99.98 pct pure. The high-purity crystals were prepared by floating-zone refining (twelve passes) a rod (7 in. by 1 in, diam) of Pechiney SR grade cast and extruded beryllium. Although an absolute chemical analysis of the zone-refined material was not established, mass spectro-graphic analysis, emission spectrographic analysis, and y activation analysis indicated that it contained in atomic fractions about 5 to 10 ppm each of carbon and oxygen, 1 to 5 ppm each of nickel and iron, and about 1 to 2 ppm of copper, with the remaining residual impurities being less than 1 ppm. Further indication of the purity of this material is provided by the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip, which was approximately 300 psi. The starting material for the alloy single crystals was 1-in.-diam floating-zone-refined (six passes) rod of Pechiney SR grade beryllium. Two such rods were wrapped respectively with sufficient weight of wire of high-purity copper (99.999 pct) or nickel (99.999 pct) to yield a 5 wt pct alloy. A seventh floating-zone pass was then applied to each of the rods to accomplish the initial alloying and an eighth pass for homogenization. Analytical samples were taken from regions of the rod immediately adjacent to where the mechanical test specimens were cut; these indicated 4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni. 2) Crystal Orientation. To avoid the occurrence of basal slip during c axis compression testing, it is necessary to load the crystals as nearly parallel to the c axis as possible. Preliminary c axis compression tests indicated that plastic flow and/or fracture occurred at stresses of the order of 300,000 psi; hence on the basis of a critical resolved shear stress for basal slip of 300 to 400 psi, the maximum crystal misorientation permitted is about 4 to 5' of arc. HARDER† During the years immediately preceding the war, the iron ores of Brazil were attracting the attention of iron operators both in Europe and in the United States. This was due to the large quantities of practically undeveloped ore available, and to its great purity. It is reasonably safe to state that had capital not been diverted from the exploitation of these deposits to war purposes, Brazilian iron ores would probably now be offered in European and American markets. It is certain that after the war these ores will play a prominent part in the economic reconstruction of Europe and perhaps in the development of America. The Brazilian iron-ore field ranks among the six great iron-ore districts of the world, the others being: (1) The Lake Superior district of the United States; (2) the Lorraine ore field of northern France and southern Germany; (3) the magnetic deposits of northern Sweden; (4) the ore fields of Oriente, Cuba; and (5) the Wabana ores of Newfoundland. It is doubtless the greatest known undeveloped iron-ore district in the world. me thermodynamic properties of the components in the Cu-Ni-S ternary system have been studied by measuring the H2S/H2 ratios in a gas phase equilibrated with the molten matte at 1200°C. The measured sulficr potentials have been extended by extrapolation and combtned with previously published data to permit the thermodynamic analysis of the ternary system by integration techniques. A simplifying assumption of ideality in the Ni3Sz-CuS pseudobinary has been made. SINCE copper and nickel metals were first extracted from their sulfide ores the interaction between the two metals and sulfur has been of industrial and theoretical interest. The processes developed to extract copper and nickel have been reported periodically in the literature. The theoretical studies on the Cu-Ni-S ternary have been restricted to problems directly associated with production. It is only within recent years that the binary systems related to this ternary have been analyzed thermodynamically and mathematical devices developed to permit a corresponding treatment of the ternary system. In 1910 an investigation of the role of nickel in Cu-Ni-Fe-S mattes was reported,' It was concluded from this work that nickel is not an element replacing iron in mattes, but rather that Cu-Ni alloys behave as a single metal during the matte converting operation. The laws which govern the converting of Cu-Ni alloys were found to be the same laws as those that govern the conventional converting of copper alone. Although considerable information has been reported on the theoretical aspects of copper smelting, little data is available on the smelting of Cu-Ni ores except for phase diagrams and process descriptions. The available information on the Cu-Fe-S ternary and related systems prior to 1953 has been summarized by Ruddle.2 Since Ruddle's publication, Rosenqvist and coworkers have completed phase equilibria investigations of the Fe-S, Co-S, and Ni-S binaries,3 the Fe-S-O ternary,4 and the Cu-Fe-S-O quaternary.4 An extensive investigation of the Cu-Fe-S ternary system at smelting temperatures has been made by Krivsky and Schuhmann.5 At these temperatures, the Cu-Fe-S system is very similar to the Cu-Ni-S ternary with respect to the location of the single-phase and two-phase liquid matte regions. In the former, however, the area of immiscibility is more extensive and the region of liquid matte-liquid metal-solid metal equilibria is much more extensive. Krivsky and Schumann observed that the Cu2S-FeS pseudobinary system is, for practical purposes, an ideal mixture. This investigation has served as a valuable guide in analyzing the Cu-Ni-S ternary. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental procedure employed in this investigation was the conventional technique of equilibration of the sulfide matte with gaseous mixtures of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide at 1200°C. The thermodynamic properties of sulfur (S2) in the gas phase are determined by means of Eq. [I] and the activity of sulfur in the matte by Eq. [2].

Diatomite is a siliceous rock of sedimentary origin, which may vary in degree of consolidation, but which consists mainly of the fossilized remains of diatoms. These are microscopic algae of the order Bacillaria. Diatomite is a unique form of silica, there being nothing else found in nature or produced by the manufacturing arts, that has its characteristic physical structure. There are numerous sediments which contain some diatom residues, admixed with a substantial amount of other materials-clay, carbonates or silica. While these are classified as diatomaceous silts, shales, or mudstones, they are not properly diatomite, a designation which is restricted to material of such qualities that it is suitable for commercial uses. The terms diatomaceous earth and kieselgur are synonymous with diatomite. The expressions infusorial earth and tripolite are obsolete. Diatomaceous silica is a definition best used to distinguish the basic component of diatomite, that is, the substance of the silica shell itself and is the major constituent of beneficiated diatomite or processed diatomaceous products. Some highly indurated materials, such as cherty shale, porcelanite, and opaline cherts which have resulted from diagenetic changes cannot be considered as diatomite although they may have been derived therefrom. On the other hand, diatomaceous oozes or loose sediments consisting mainly of diatom residues with or without much organic matter are source materials in process of becoming diatomite. Composition and Properties Pure diatomite is composed of opaline or hydrous silica, with small amounts of associated inorganic components-alumina, iron, alkaline earths, alkali metals, and minor constituents, all of which may occur in solid solution or as an essential part of the opal complex. Crude diatomite on the other hand may contain variable amounts of organic matter and soluble salts, and the usual contaminants of sedimentary formations-particles of rockforming minerals, sand, clay, or carbonates. As occurring in nature, diatomite contains an unusual amount of free water, which may vary from 10 to 60 pct or more. Diatomite, in the dry deposits which are characteristic of most of the important world deposits, occurs as a lightweight, comparatively light colored, "chalklike" material. The apparent density (dry basis) in situ varies from 20 to 40 lb per cu ft. The structure may be either massive or finely stratified. The earth is highly porous, usually soft and easily friable. It is nonreactive with acids and may be tentatively identified by the above characterizations. Confirmation is by microscopic examination which readily reveals the nature of the material. In deposits which contain organic matter the appearance of the material is totally different. The color may vary from light tan or gray to brown, greenish or nearly black. There is frequently difficulty in distinguishing it in the field from peatlike materials, but the difference is readily apparent after calcination. Powdered diatomite or diatomite products have an apparent density (loose weight) of 5 to 16 lb per cu ft, wet densities of 10 to 30 lb per cu ft, specific gravities 1.9 to 2.35, index of refraction 1.42 to 1.48. Diatomite is essentially micro-amorphous, but does show some tendency toward orientation in structure after a cristobalite pattern. Amorphous silica has been considered as a random association of cristobalite crystallites, the size of which are only slightly larger than a unit cell.20 The prop-

IN defending the chemical theory of flotation, Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl have criticized1 the views of those who prefer to attribute the effects of certain flotation agents to adsorption. Perhaps with some justifica-tion, they describe the latter term as the "haven of refuge of writers lost in a morass of shaky experiment and muddy thinking." We prefer to regard it, however, as a haven of refuge for writers who seek a conven-tional term to describe the formation of films of flotation reagents on solid surfaces, because in many cases it is not yet possible to specify the forces that hold them there. Originally, as Taggart and his associates state, adsorption connoted a. concentration difference and nothing more. In recent years, workers in the field of surface chemistry have tacitly added other meanings, and they now speak of orientated adsorption of unimolecular films on a solid sub-strate, of chemi-adsorption, and of exchange adsorption. Thus the term adsorption may connote-simply the Gibbs layer of excess concentration at the surface of a solution, or a unimolecular film at the surface of a solid. Perhaps this has led to the misunderstanding of Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl concerning the relationship between surface tension and adsorption at solid surfaces. The change in "surface tension" accompanying adsorp-tion at a liquid surface can be used as a measure of the adsorption, and the Gibbs equation as quoted by these authors correlates these two con-ceptions. But, to correlate two conceptions does not necessarily imply an attempt to explain either, although sometimes. such an "explanation" is carelessly inferred. Use of "surface energy per unit area" instead of the numerically equal but more difficult and less definite conception of "surface tension per unit length" would lessen many of the present diffi-culties. (Compare with Adam.2) At interfaces involving a solid phase, neither "surface tension" nor "interfacial tension" can have any meaning, but the conception "interfacial energy per unit area" can be understood by anyone who is familiar with the concept of free energy. Flotation of minerals has usually been discussed in terms of solid-liquid interfacial phenomena. This paper discusses the relative importance of phenomena such as collector adsorption at other interfaces formed between the bubble, liquid and solid. Adsorption of collector ions of various chain lengths at liquid-gas and solid-gas interfaces has been obtained. The data have been analyzed under conditions corresponding to those of flotation to show the significant role of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface in determining the bubble-mineral attachment required for flotation, and consequently to suggest consideration of this role in the development of better flotation conditions. Vacuum flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate reported in the foregoing paper1 showed that the collector chain length has an effect on flotation even at concentrations below those necessary for hemi-micelle association of the hydrocarbon chains at a solid-liquid interface. This chain length effect might be explained by the following arguments: Hydrocarbon chains find it energetically favorable to be in a medium of low dielectric constant. Considering the possibility of an iceberg structure at the solid-liquid interface, such a structure would produce a region of lower dielectric constant at the solid-liquid interface than in the liquid phase, because the dielectric constant of ice is 2 to 3,2 while that of water is 80. Depending on chain length, this difference will certainly cause even individual ions to adsorb in higher quantities at the solid-liquid interface. Another mechanism to consider is the possible formation of dimers, trimers, etc and chain length would influence this formation. But, above all, the chain length effect on flotation at concentrations of low adsorption at the solid-liquid interface could be due to the significant but often-neglected role of the collector adsorption at the bub- ble surface. Collector ions or molecules are adsorbed both at the solid-liquid interface and the liquid-gas interface. Below the concentration for hemi-micelle association at the Stern plane adjacent to the surface, the bulk of the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface are in the diffuse part of the double layer. If such systems, where there is a gas bubble coming in contact with the solid surface, are to achieve some degree of electroneutrality, those collector ions would have to migrate from the diffuse part of the double layer to the region directly adjacent to the surface during the induction period when the bubble is making contact with the solid. The time necessary for this migration would contribute to the induction period required for creation of the solid-gas interface. It seems reasonable that the induction period could be reduced sufficiently for flotation to occur if these collector ions were carried to the surface by the bubble. In an attempt to ascertain whether or not the bubble could possibly have sufficient collector ions at its surface to meet the requirement mentioned above, the adsorption density of the collector ions at the liquid-air interface was determined. For this purpose, the surface tension of alkyl ammonium acetate solutions was determined as a function of concentration. Adsorption densities of the collector at the liquid-gas interface were calculated using the Gibbs adsorption equation: where y is the interfacial tension and ri and pi are the adsorption density and the chemical potential, respectively, of the chemical species, i. The regular activities of the Insti¬tute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $560,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman; Paul D. Merica, vice-chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. M. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb John M. Lovejoy, Harvey D. Mudd and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.
