Introduction The development of metallurgical practice at lambia Broken Hill is directly related to the change in mineralization of the deposits as mining progressed from the open pits to underground. The ore consists of a mixture of lead and zinc sulphide minerals, together with abundant silicates, carbonates and other oxidized minerals of these metals. The irregularity that characterizes the shape of the orebodies applies equally to their mineral content, which makes ore reserve calculations and the maintenance of a balanced feed to the metallurgical plants, problems of some magnitude. History The Rhodesia Broken Hill Development ,Company was formed in 1904 after an Australian prospector, T. G. Davey, discovered the outcrops in 1902. In the early years zinc ores were calcined for shipment but this proved uneconomic. Cerussite outcrops were then smelted directly in blast furnaces for the production of lead until 1929 when ore above the water level was exhausted.

Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

Since its organization, in July, 1917, the War Minerals Committee of the Institute, of which William Y. Westervelt is chairman, has been studying important phases of the mineral industry and its relation to winning the war. From this has come a realization of the imperative need for more definite coordination than is possible without direction by some governmental agency. No privately controlled industry can have the detailed knowledge of war needs or the control of all its supplies and markets necessary to effect the adjustment of its activities for war purposes. The first of two initial 650-mw units of the Paradise Steam Station, located on the banks of the Green River in the south-central portion of the western Kentucky coal basin, is scheduled for operation in late fall of 1962. This plant will be the eighth large-capacity, modern station built by TVA in a series starting with Johnsonville, operated first in 1951. During the subsequent ten years, unit sizes have increased from a capability of 125 mw to 650 mw at Paradise. This new unit will take its place in a power system that serves an area of about 80,000 sq miles with a present installed capacity of over 12,000 mw. Upon completion of the Paradise units and other additional hydro and steam units presently under construction, the system capacity will have reached over 15,000 mw. Projected load estimates indicate that this system will provide a margin of slightly under 10% of dependable capacity above peak demand at that time. One Paradise 650-mw unit at that time will represent approximately 4yc of the total system installed capacity.

What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? The technical answers to this frequently asked question may vary from "I don't know" to "quite good" from people of the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in planning future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization and water application. Each of these factors and others have a bearing on the rate of recovery. Anaconda's method of water distribution at Butte is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The injection holes are drilled vertically on 25 ft centers from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40 ft deep and cased with 4-in. PVC perforated pipe. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four 1/2 in. diam holes at 90" spacing on the pipe circumference.

The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321-325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale deposits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 90 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;' the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. These estimates are based on numerous surfac,e samples and on core-drill holes drilled by the Government and by private enterprise. The oil-shale beds are undisturbed and lie nearly horizontal. The name "oil shale" is unfortunate, as the rock is a tough, strong marlstone. Organic matter named "kerogen" is a constituent of the rock. The oil-shale demonstration mine is on Naval Oil-Shale Reserve No. 1; it is about 5 1/2miles by mountain road from the plant site, which, in turn, is 2 miles from U.S. Highway 6 and 10 miles west from Rifle, Colo. The highway parallels the Colorado River, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, and a 66,000-volt public-utility power line. Early in the program it was realized that an oil-shale enterprise would have to be on a large scale to be commercial, and that unusually low mining costs would be necessary. The physical characteristics of the Mahogany Ledge and an overlying roof stone are unusually favorable both for large-scale operation and low mining costs. Quarry practices largely will be followed underground to mine the Mahogany Ledge. The aim has been toward complete mechanization of all mining operations. A mining unit would comprise a square mile containing 100,000,000 tons of oil shale with allowance for mining losses. An investment of $1,000,000 would be $0.01 a ton; such an expenditure, therefore, could be made to save, say, $0.015 per ton daily operating cost. A goal of a mining cost of $0.50 per ton was set up in 1945. Open-cut mining costs then were about $0.25 per ton of material handled; it was hoped that a cost double this amount could be obtained in mining the Mahogany Ledge. Costs of labor and supplies have increased since 1945 and so has the selling price of petroleum products. To those unacquainted with the character of the Green River deposits, the name "shale" suggested high mining costs. Others assumed that coalmining costs of $2 to $5 per ton would apply. To many, the expected mining costs appeared the principal handicap to the establishment of an oil-shale industry. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines is to demonstrate methods and to establish costs for mining the oil shale on a large scale. It is hoped this work will lead to the establishment of a large-scale, commercial oil-shale enterprise.

THE properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining. Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compañia de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compañia Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Fig. 1.) GEOLOGY The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rocks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist- heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established.. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time.

In almost any situation where particulate or granular bulk solids have to be conveyed, whether for a distance of a few metres or for many hundreds of metres, a pneumatic conveying system may be considered. Conveying by pipeline is convenient and clean, but running costs may be substantial because of the heavy air consumption and the trend has therefore been towards dense-phase transport in which the ratio of conveyed solids to conveying air is kept high. This paper concentrates on air-float conveying, which can be regarded as an extreme form of dense-phase conveying where the bulk solid is fluidised in a channel and then caused to flow, either by inclining the channel or creating a pressure gradient along 'it. Various designs of air-float conveyor for upward, horizontal and down- ward transport of powders are discussed, with special emphasis on the latter case. In situations where a continuous downward slope can be provided, the combination of air-fluidisation and gravity flow results in a conveying system that, for many kinds of bulk particulate solid, would be hard to better in terms of convenience, reliability and economy. The paper is concluded with a discussion of design features and performance of practical air-gravity conveyors, involving the handling of various bulk particulate solids, both in research and in full-scale industria1 applications.

I. INTRODUCTION THE utilization of hydro-electric power in electro-metallurgical indus¬tries, aside from purely mechanical operations, may he of two kinds. The electric energy may be used to supply the heat necessary for the per¬formance of the chemical reactions of a metallurgical process, or the elec¬trolytic action of a direct current may be employed for extraction of metals, either in a reduction process or a refining process. In discussing this subject, it is well to distinguish between established industries, which are producing metals and alloys at a profit by use of the electric current, and the many processes which are either still in the experimental stage or have not even passed the paper stage of development of a patent. That is, we consider electro-metallurgical industries as commercial operations which are now consuming large blocks of electric energy, while processes which are not in commercial operation are only prospective consumers. Also, owing to the difficulty and risk of any attempt to foresee the effect of the European war upon electro-metallurgical industries, we have felt obliged to disregard the war entirely, and state our opinions regardless of its existence.

Anaconda's Jackpile-Paguate mine, located between Albuquerque and Grants, N.M., is situated at an elevation of 6000 ft in a semi-arid desert region. The original Jackpile deposit was discovered by Anaconda air and ground exploration parties in Nov. 1951. A large percentage of the uranium mined in New Mexico comes from the Jackpile-Paguate, which is one of, if not the largest, open pit uranium mines in the world. From 1953 to the present, 120 million tons of overburden, mining waste, and low-grade material have been removed to produce approximately 10 million tons of merchantable uranium ore, having an average grade of about 0.25% uranium oxide. Identifying the Orebody Surface drill holes delineate the ore bodies on a predetermined grid which varies in dimension but usually affords 100-ft control. These holes are probed immediately after drilling by geophysical logging trucks, resulting in a gamma log and digital readout from each hole. From this information it is possible to arrive at an almost immediate conversion to percentage of U3O8 on 6-in. intervals. Initially a hole is probed at a reconnaissance speed of 10 fpm with a time constant of 8 sec. Wherever the gamma recording goes off scale on an initial run, that particular zone is rerun at 2 fpm and at a time constant of 2 sec. This time constant is the interval that emissions are counted and accumulated for recording purposes. The search radius of the Geiger probe is approximately 18 in.

INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. INTRODUCTION A greater understanding is required about the factors which control tunneling operations if we are to meet the expected demand for tunnels. Much of the needed information can best be achieved by the proper use of instrumentation and advanced engineering concepts. Tunnel measurements and their analysis may prove to be the key which will give the insight necessary to understand the relationship of rock, tunnel supports, and linings. There are three main areas which can be improved through the use of tunnel instrumentation. First, and of prime importance, is safety for men and the project. When unstable conditions occur, sets become distorted. Even without measurements, it is sometimes possible to tell when trouble is approaching. In effect, the set acts as a load cell. Distortions in the set indicate reinforcements may be required to maintain stability. Additional sets or rock bolts, if they are placed soon enough, may provide this stability. However, when large rock displacements occur in short periods of time, it could be too late. Figure 1 is an example of the difficulties encountered in stopping moving rock. To stop the movement and possible failure, large props were placed above the spring line and the massive concrete gravity buttress was constructed along the legs. Rock bolts from the buttress deep into the rock were also used in an attempt to stabilize the rock mass. However, this work is for a highway tunnel and eventually these props and buttresses must be removed.

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential, but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for converting a prospect into a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is usually headed by an engineer-promoter or an entrepreneur trader who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the ha1 operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R. The purpose of this paper is to record the results obtained in the use of the Russell process at Aspen, Colo., covering a period of fourteen months, from November, 1891, to December, 1892, during which time over 30,000 tons of ore, purchased outright, on sample and assay, were treated. No explanation of results will be attempted, nor will the chemistry of the process be discussed. The plant was designed by C. A. Stetefeldt, of San Francisco, and built by the owners by day-labor. The entire plant is run by water-power, supplied by a flume 3600 feet long, and a pipe-line 2200 feet long, with a head of 170 feet. A Pelton water-wheel, 8 feet in diameter, is used, from which power is transmitted by wire-rope to the main counter-shaft in the mill, a distance of about 250 feet. From the mill to the samplingworks, about 150 feet, power is also transmitted by a wirerope. A Pelton water-wheel, 3 feet in diameter, supplies power to the dynamo for lighting the plant. The works are located adjoining the Santa Fe railroad tracks, and all ore and supplies are unloaded directly from the cars to the works. The sampling-works are provided with crushers and rolls, the latter being used only on samples, and not on the entire ore. The Cornish hand-quartering method is used in sampling ore for purchase. After crushing and sampling, the ore goes to the bedding-floor, where it is made up into mixtures suitable for the mill. The drying-plant consists of four Stetefeldt double shelfdryers, six shelves high, and is provided with dust-chambers and a stack 65 feet high for draft. These dryers are fired with gas

The many complexities arising from our present oil pool proration systems emphasize the need for a suitable standard of property rights. Attempts at conservation and unitization agreements have frequently failed because of the lack of such a standard. The necessity of reducing production to consumption has caused umpires, committees, commissions and other governing bodies to allocate the production of flush fields among the respective owners. The methods of allocation vary widely and conservation of underground reserves is frequently neglected or misused. Critical economic conditions increase, rather than modify, competitive methods. In some fields we have irregular and uneconomically close well spacing. Many operators drill unreasonably large holes, take excessive sand penetrations or leave their wells untubed in order to secure higher potential open-flow tests than their offsets. All of these practices result in economic waste and frequently damage to the pool. Regardless of our agreement with the fundamental principles of proration or unitization, both are actual necessities in many of our present economic situations, and we are in urgent need of a suitable standard of rights to facilitate and simplify their operation. The problems pertinent to unit management are simple and of daily use in many partnership enterprises, but the problems of fair and proper division of production under either proration or unitization are, as yet, subject to controversy. The rights of respective owners must be ascertained and standardized before we can eliminate wasteful practices and still preserve constructive competition in our industry. Valuation of Tracts In a recent unitization conference it was found that each participant had a different basis for calculating the relative values of tracts. Some of these assumptions were as follows: 1. Unrestricted open-flow operation to abandonment. 2. Current proration system to abandonment.

By far the greater number of the members of this Institute are men who are engaged in the strenuous work of the technical part of their profession, and find little time for the abstract scientific work which is less distinctly practical and pecuniarily remunerative. There is, however, a small but increasingly nu, merous class whose members devote themselves to broad geological problems which underlie the systematic development, and whose work, theoretically, ought to precede and form a basis for that of their more practical brethren. These are the so-called mining or economic geologists, who are, for the most part, connected with State or National geological surveys. Prom the character of their work, the life of these men necessarily follows rather different lines from that of most of their colleagues, and is not generally familiar to them. It seems admissible, therefore, that to the life of a prominent member of this class, who died during the past year, having literally sac-rified his life to his work, a more extended notice should be given than the relatively small number of his contributions to the Transactions night seem to justify. George Homans Eldridge, son of Ellery and Sarah (Mathews) Eldridge, was born on Cape Cod at Yarmouth, Mass.; Christmas day, 1854. His boyhood education in the public school at Yarmouth was followed by a six years' course in the Public Latin School at Boston, from which he entered Harvard University in 1872, being graduated with the highest rank in his class in the natural sciences in 1876. During his college course he spent the summers of 1875-6 at Cumberland Gap, Ky.,as volunteer aid to Prof. N. S. Shaler, who was then in charge of the State Geological Survey of Kentucky. WhEN mechanical twins initiate cracking it has been proposed1 that the friction stress for dislocation motion, in the Cottrell criterion for brittle fracture2 should be replaced by the stress required to propagate a twin, ttp. TF is the fracture stress, d the grain diameter, ß a geometric constant, u shear modulus, and y the effective surface energy. Since TTp is likely to vary with grain size, it cannot be substituted by a constant in Eq. [I]. If an expression for the energy change caused by a twin in a stressed material could be obtained, it is in principle possible to compute the critical size of the twin, i.e., the size at which the system can decrease its energy spontaneously, as a function of applied stress, thus giving the stress required to just barely propagate the twin, i.e., TTP. Consider a circular twin disc with a radius r and having a lenticular cross section, Fig. 1. Twin dislocations3 of strength b exist in the twin boundary parallel to the twin plane, one loop on each atomic plane. Assume that the total numbers of loops, n, can be replaced by one circular loop of a multiple dislocation, nb with a radius r. One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to really cope with them. The history of mining shows that until the last 50 years, work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated as to the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps" which was probably derived from the German word "dampf," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were as follows: Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere where a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen and which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp Flammable mixtures of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide.
