TEMPERATURE considerations are of prime importance in the manufacture of steel products-front the time the metal is produced in the melting furnace, where the chemical reactions have a direct dependence on the temperatures of the bath, to the final machining of work on which the expansion due to the rise in temperature of the forgings during machining must be allowed for. Methods employed and difficulties encountered in some of the more important steps are here outlined. These methods are the result of years of experience, with many methods of temperature determination, and have been successful in routine works practice in the manufacture of high-quality steels. In the operations of melting, forging, and heat treatment, if the product is to be of the best quality each operation must be carefully followed through. A high-quality product cannot be obtained even with the best heat treatment if the steel is poorly melted, and, conversely, the best steel ever made may he spoiled by inefficient heat treatment. To perform the best work in any of these operations, temperatures must be accurately regulated.

Granulated sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. Pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors. It was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is examined in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes. The experimental and mathematical techniques presented may be useful in interpreting the behavior of the permeability of sinter beds after ignition.

THE THIRD and most important item on the Phelps Dodge agenda for the development of new ore supplies involved the site of the company's initial venture into Arizona, the old mining camp of Morenci. By the purchase of the Arizona Copper Company's holdings in 1921, Phelps Dodge had obtained control of virtually the entire Morenci district, including town, public utilities, and, above all, the huge mineralized area that had once been divided between numerous competing companies. Because of this rigid concentration of ownership in the hands of one organization, Phelps Dodge was able to plan and successfully carry out a program of greater magnitude than any Arizona mining company had previously under- taken. The immense deposit of low-grade ore, usually referred to as the Clay Orebody, had been known to the mining companies of Morenci for many years. Pioneer exploratory work, both by the Arizona Copper Company and later by Phelps Dodge, revealed that the deposit, mostly of light-gray porphyry rock, lay under a hard capping from two hundred to five hundred feet thick. Mining geophysics in 1969 marked a year of growth and consolidation in the application of ground and airborne geophysical methods and techniques with a 20% rise in expenditures for world-wide exploration. Growth was determined by questionnaire survey of industry, geophysical contractors, universities and government agencies conducted by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Relative position of metlhods is shown in the accompanying table on page 87. Methods and Techniques Electromagnetic airborne and ground methods showed the largest gains in the utilization of VLF-EM instrumentation. The VLF-EM instrument is a directional radio receiver which is tuned to distant radio transmitters in the 15 to 25 kilohertz band range. It measures vertical real and imaginary components of the magnetic field vector, and is used in geological mapping and surveying for various types of conductors in the ground. A series of experimental investigations was carried out in situ and in the laboratory with special emphasis on the gassy seams of the Kozlu District, Zonguldak Coalfield, Turkey. The nature of firedamp emission in the return airways of coal faces together with the individual parameters affecting the phnomenon were studied and the observations are discussed. The residual methane content of the lump coal samples was determined by the volumetric method. All the evidence obtained from the field and laboratory results indicate that certain coal seams under production in the Kozlu District of the Zonguldak Coalfield are very gassy in nature. There are cases where in the return airways of some coal faces the total emission of methane reached up to 3300 cu ft pure methane per ton of coal mined. From the impressions gained in the course of the present work and from available literature, retention and emission of methane are basically large-scale phenomena, dependent on exogenous and endogenous parameters in coal mine, which may effect to a greater or lesser degree actual firedamp incidents.

MINING operations have been carried on in the immediate area of the Elizabeth mine during periods of high copper prices since 1793, when copperas and vermillion were first won from the outcrop. Present operations started in 1942 as a war baby. Since then production has totaled 1.7 million tons of 1.8 pct Cu ore. Elizabeth mining operations are on a pyrrhotite- chalcopyrite orebody contained in a gently plunging amphibolite syncline. The oreshoot varies in width from 10 to 40 ft, and in the area under consideration is about 150 ft in vertical extent, and more than 1000 ft long. Surface pits or cuts have been worked in three areas along the outcrop, with one pit just completed and a second in full production. Present production is 24,000 tons per month, of which 6000 to 7000 tons is trucked from the open pit.

The reesistivity of Cu-Pd alloys of 9.6 to 29 pct Pd alloys was measured after plastic deformzation in tension. For all compositions a continzting decrease in resistivity with increasing plastic strain was observed. By comparison with the results of Damask on a brass ad Cu3Au, it was deduced that these anonzalous decreases in resistivity are due to the decrease in short-vunge order caused by cold work. An anomalous decrease in the resistivity of cold-worked CU-Pd alloys was first reported by Jaumot and Sawatzky.' They observed decreases in the electrical resistivity when disordered Cu-Pd alloys drawing at room temperature. Recently, a similar anomaly was reported by Aarts and Houston-Mac-Mi1lan2 in Ag-Pd alloys containing 10 to 45 pct Pd. The plastic deformation in this case was produced by tensile strain at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. For AE-Pd alloys the relative resistivity change becomes positive for tensile strains of about 20 pct.

PRIOR to World War II, approximately 500 tons per day, or one-third of the ore being shipped to the Golden Cycle Mill at Colorado Springs, Colo., from the Cripple Creek district, was being treated in the flotation plant. The remaining 1000 tons, along with the flotation concentrates, received the usual roasting and cyanide treatment. Since it was not possible to make a disposable tailing on the general run of Cripple Creek ores by flotation alone, it was necessary to treat the flotation tailings by cyanidation, along with the roasted ore. By this treatment, an overall economical tailing could be made. The gold ores from the Cripple Creek district are the highly siliceous sulphotellurides with approximately 3 pct total sulphides. In the lower grade ores most of the values are found in very finely disseminated pyrite. In some of the higher grade ores the tellurides, calaverite and sylvanite, can be recognized. After several years of floating Cripple Creek gold ores, having a very low mineral content, it was concluded that this type of ore required a Type of flotation machine that would give a rather violent aeration and agitation. This action produced a fairly deep froth column which contained not only the free mineral, principally pyrite, but also most of the middling product; this was most essential in producing a low grade tailing by flotation alone that could be discarded to waste. After investigating most of the current types of flotation machines, it was decided to convert to the Fagergren type. During World War II, the flotation plant was modified to handle lead and zinc ores. The treatment of these ores was carried on until April 1946. At this time the flotation plant was again reconverted to handle the Cripple Creek ores. SELECTING ORES FOR FLOTATION During the period of reconversion a considerable amount of experimental work was carried on in the laboratory to determine if a disposable tailing could be made by flotation alone, on certain selected ores from the Cripple Creek district. It was found that most of the dump ores and a few of the low grade mine ores could be treated by this method with very satisfactory results. After the preliminary test work in the laboratory, it was decided to carry on further work on a plant-size scale to see if similar results could be obtained. On April 15, 1946, a part of the plant was put into operation as a pilot plant. The various ores that had been found suitable for treatment by this method in the laboratory, were run through the pilot plant at the rate of 200 tons per day for a period of several months. Results were so encouraging that it was decided to put the plant in full-scale operation. Since that time plant capacity has been increased from 500 to 1000 tons per day. IN SPITE of its widely ramified interests in manufacturing, mines, lumber, railroads, and real estate, Phelps, Dodge & Co. remained primarily interested in exporting and importing, in buying and selling, and William E. Dodge, the directing-partner, consistently styled himself a merchant. After 1849 the profits of the company mounted steadily for seven years until they approached the half-million mark, but in 1857 another severe panic ended the long period of national prosperity that had begun some fifteen years before. Extravagance, indebtedness, and inflation again took their costly toll; or, as the New York Herald of June 27,1857, declared: Governmental spoliations, public defaulters, paper bubbles of all descriptions, a general scramble for western lands and town and city sites, millions of dollars, made or borrowed, expended in fine houses and gaudy furniture; hundreds of thousands in the silly rivalries of fashionable parvenues, in silks, laces, diamonds and every variety of costly frippery are.only a few among the many crying evils of the day. A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength. IN the last few years additional sintering facilities have been installed in both the Pittsburgh and the Chicago district of the United States Steel Co. Since the construction of these sintering plants made possible the use of higher percentages of flue-dust sinter in our blast-furnace burdens, it became important to study means of controlling the quality of sinter to obtain optimum results in the blast furnace. For controlling an operating process, it is necessary first to establish standards by which the quality of the product can be judged. For sinter, it appeared that an important property was its strength or its resistance to degradation during transportation and charging into the furnace. Consequently work was undertaken to establish a standard for sinter strength that could be used both for controlling sintering-plant operations and for correlating sinter quality with blast-furnace performance. The first problem in setting up a standard was that of procuring a sample that would be representative of the sinter made under any particular set of conditions at the sintering plant. Since the United States Steel Co. sintering plants discharge the finished sinter either into a large pit or onto a rotary cooler, the sinter becomes inseparably mixed with material sintered 2 hr before or 2 hr afterwards. For this reason the exact identity of the sinter is lost. A sample selected as the cooler is discharged, or as the sinter is removed from the pit, cannot be said to be truly representative of the sinter made at any specific time. Sampling The first attempt to procure a sample that would be representative of a specific sinter mix and of specific operating conditions was made by stopping the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine and removing an entire pallet full of sinter. This method, however, proved very difficult to perform and interfered considerably with the operation of the plant. To overcome this difficulty, a sampling method was devised by technologists at South Works enabling them to secure, without interrupting the sintering operation, a sample of about 1 cu ft of sinter, representative of sinter for the full depth of the sintering bed. The South Works method involves the use of a steel-frame-work basket. A typical basket is shown in Fig. 1. The basket has been used both with and without crossbars along the bottom. As long as the crossbars are in the same direction as the grate bars on the sintering machine they do not interfere with the sintering process. The basket is set on an empty grate of the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine before it passes under the swinging feed spout, see Fig. 2. When the basket is removed after it has travelled the length of the sintering machine, it contains the sample. Just before the basket is removed, the sinter is scored and chipped to facilitate removal of the sample from the sinter bed. A view of the basket after its removal is shown in Fig. 3. Although the sampling method was originally designed for use on a Dwight Lloyd sintering machine, it can also be used on the Greenawalt type of machine. When used on the Greenawalt-type machine, the basket is placed on the sintering grate before the charging car passes over it, and finally it is removed just before the pan is dumped. Testing After a method of obtaining a representative sample of sinter had been developed, the next step was to select a method of measuring its strength. The irregular shape and size of the sinter pieces precluded the use of a simple compression test for determining strength; consequently, the shatter test and tumbler test were investigated. To perform the shatter test, a sample of sinter, approximately 5 lb, is dropped from a hinged-bottom box at a height of 3 ft onto a steel plate. The broken sinter is sieve-analyzed after a specified number of drops. The tumbler test is performed with the use of a standard ASTM coke-tumbling drum. The drum is 3 ft in diam and is equipped with two lifter bars diametrically opposite one another on the inner periphery of the drum. The drum is rotated at a speed of 24 rpm for 200 revolutions, and after tumbling the sample is sieve-analyzed. To express as single numbers the results of sieve analyses after shattering or tumbling, the method suggested by R. E. Powers1 was employed. This method involved plotting the size of the sieve openings on a logarithmic scale and the cumulative per cent larger than each sieve on a probability scale as described by J. B. Austin.' Most minerals have experienced a slow hut perceptible decline in their annual primary production growth over the past hundred years. This decline is due to a combination of factors: (1) increased recycling; (2) exhaustion of the more accessible or higher grade ores; (3) partial substitution; (4) the more efficient use of materials; (5) progressive saturation of markets as living standards rise. Therefore, future demand for new mineral resources will probably be lower than anticipated. As the world population stabilizes, this slowdown in production growth will become even more pronounced.

The tremendous increase in the use of metals that have been prcpared by the various cold-working processes during recent years has greatly stimulated the investigation of problems concerned with the fundamental nature of these processes. It has been observed in practice that different methods of bringing about the same dimension changes in a sample result in a rather wide range of properties. Cold working reduces the ductility of a metal, or what is perhaps more nearly correct, its "working capacity," and naturally the manufacturer wishes to produce an article that has as large a working capacity as possible, and to produce it with the smallest number of operations. It has also been known for some time that cold deformation produces a parallel alignment of the crystal grains of a metal, and that the type of this preferred orientation depends to some extent at least upon particular processes employed in the deformation. The present investigation has for its purpose the study of the relations between the various factors of a cold-working process and the preferred orientation of the metjal crystals resulting from this deformation. The work is chiefly confined to a study of cold-drawn seamless tubing. Preparation of Samples The tubing samples used in this investigation were made of steel having a carbon content of 0.10 to 0.20 per cent, and were drawn on a standard type of draw bench. In order to obtain the large reductions, the annealed stock was coated with lead, for purposes of lubrication. The reductions of area stated refer to reduction from the annealed condition without intermediate heat treatment. The cold work was done as nearly as possible at room temperature. The samples of wire and strip used for purposes of comparison were of steel of approximately the same carbon content and were prepared in the manner indicated. THE Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig, 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia, It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends down-ward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break down the rock in large blocks.

IT is the he object of this paper to describe a Cottrell treater that was placed in operation, in April, 1919, at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co., for the purpose of recovering solids from the gases from the McDougall roasting furnaces. Fundamentally, the treater is simply a flue containing rows of vertical plates, forming the grounded electrode, alternated with rows of small horizontal pipes, forming the negative electrode, with proper provision underneath for taking away collected dust. There are advantages in construction over the more cumbersome types, both the vertical-tube and the vertical-box, particularly in the elimination of heavy supporting columns and massive foundations, giving a much lower first cost. There are no right-angle turns to interfere with gas distribution; consequently there is greater efficiency, or, in other words, a greater volume of gas per minute can be effectively treated. Another advantage of the horizontal installation over the vertical is that the principle of the selective precipitation of the various components of the dust and fume as they pass along the electric field may be utilized. Since the treater has been placed in operation, the results have been quite satisfactory and, in many ways, particularly in regard to the volume of gas that may be treated, have greatly exceeded expectations.

THE influence of environment on the mechanical properties of metals has been extensively studied and documented.' Most investigations have dealt with an interaction between a particular environment and a specific metal surface and the concomitant change in bulk mechanical behavior. Typical contributing media are oxide and metal film:;, electrolytes, and other surface-active agents. In the last category fall controlled gaseous environs (i.e., pressure or vacuum). Most vacuum exposure experiments prior to 1963 were conducted at pressures s>10-6 torr and elevated temperatures, or in such a manner as to prolong the exposure (e.g., by stress-rupture, creep, and fatigue). Little attention has been given to vacuum environment effects on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to simple uniaxial deformation at room temperature. Test times and temperatures were assumed too ineffective as far as bulk changes were concerned. Further, the contribution of surface effects to the bulk mechanical behavior of metals was considered minimal. Under vacuums of the order of 1.0- 8torr and higher, molecular densities and, consequently, the rate of monolayer formation are such that exposures from seconds to days would be required for complete gas coverage. Thus, atomically clean surfaces created under ultra-high vacuum could conceivably maintain their cleanliness for time intervals orders of magnitude greater than at higher pressures. The influence of this unusual type of environmental surface phenomenon on the short-term bulk mechanical behavior of aluminum was first observed by Krame and Podlaseck in 1963.' kin equivalent effect was reported for magnesium by Williams and Nelson.3 It was concluded from these studies2,3 that vacuum and, consequently, the monolayer formation rate of the oxide, were responsible for the described changes in flow behavior. The presence of an oxide layer impedes dis- I) EXPERIMENTAL DATA: MOLYBDENUM The tensile behavior of molybdenum was investigated by the author4-6 at ambient temperature over a range of pressures from 760 to 10-10 torr. These studies revealed that the flow behavior of the bulk specimens (0.200 in. diam by 2 in. gage length) was independent of pressure on sintered (0.062 mm grain size) and arc-cast polycrystals (0.012 to 0.149 mm grain sizes) and single crystals. Since the specimens were relatively large in size, it was assumed that any flow behavior effect would be surface-limited because of the short-term deformation procedure. Strain-rate-change experiments performed to determine the activation volumes for individual specimens at 760 to 10- 10 torr further indicated that the surface flow contribution was either minimal or zero, contrary to the findings of Shen el a1.7 on aluminum. Although the flow behaviors did not change, specimen ductility did change. For the sintered material at a strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4, specimen ductility was -9 pct higher at l0- 10 torr than at atmospheric pressure (dry nitrogen). A more comprehensive investigations on this same material revealed a distinct pressure dependence, Fig. 1. Intermediate and atmospheric pressure tests were obtained by backfilling the system from l0- 10 torr with extra dry, prepurified nitrogen. Other environments (air and purified argon) were also utilized for the 760 torr experiments; the results were essentially the same as those for dry nitrogen atmospheres. Departure from the fracture strain values obtained at 760 torr takes place in the vicinity of l0-6 torr, as indicated by the scatter band; a noticeable ductility increase is apparent at l0-8 and 10-10 torr.

Petroleum engineers generally are of the opinion that the flow conditions and, therefore, the formulas that apply to the flow of oil and gas in long pipe lines differ in many ways from flow conditions in oil wells. One of the reasons why the formulas in common use for pipe-line flow do not correctly apply to oil wells is that the flow lines are vertical and not horizontal. Another factor to be considered is that the fluid is a mixture of oil and gas and that the physical characteristics of these two components are affected differently by changing conditions of pressure and temperature during upward flour. Realizing the need for accurate data on flow in vertical pipes under conditions caused both by natural flow and the gas-lift, the U. S: Bureau of Mines has installed equipment at the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., for the purpose of studying this problem. In additon a study will be made of the comparative effects of different natural-flow and gas-lift methods of producing oil on ultimate production from reservoir sands. Experimental Equipment The experimental equipment consists of a regular oil-field steel derrick, a large pressure tank installed in a concrete pit beneath the derrick floor, compressors and pumps, gas separators and absorbers, metering and control devices, and the necessary pipe connections. The crown-block level represents the derrick floor at an oil well, and the "producing sand" is the pressure tank below the derrick floor. The difference in elevation between the crown-block level and the tank is 90 ft. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the construction and exterior arrangement of the equipment. The success of the experiment will of course depend largely upon the accuracy of the oil and gas measurements and the temperature and pressure determinations. Because extreme accuracy is necessary, all oil and gas measurements will be checked at least twice, and in some

Prospecting methods used in Tennessee have gradually improved with the years, as required by depletion of the easily accessible and shallow deposits and the universal trend toward mechanization, and as necessitated by exploring deeper beds, often occurring under limestone and flinty overburden. In the early days it was a very simple matter to dig pits by hand, using a plentiful supply of local farm labor to expose relatively shallow deposits of "brown rock" under shallow clayey overburden that would stand up without timbering. Visual inspection of the exposed phosphate and expert judgment of the "grade" analysis, aided by a "biting" test to reveal presence of unwanted silica, furnished most of the information required. All this might be helped by a few samples sent to the local chemist† who supplemented his income by judicious trading or tanning a few bear skins. The extra curricula activities did not affect the accuracy of the analysis which hold up even under present day standards. Some shot and core drilling was done in Hickman County, mostly for the limestone-like blue Phosphate deposits. The next step was the use of a 4-in. posthole auger, hand operated as described by Guenther, followed by a completely mechanized rig, as described by Pickard. Both these methods are practically adapted to the prospecting of the relatively soft brown rock deposits at moderate depths of clay overburden. For prospecting in areas of deeper overburden, such as are often found in Hickman County, up to 150 or even 200-ft depths, a modified core-drilling method is described by Guenther. Johnston describes a special diamond-drilling technique, developed by TVA, to penetrate flint horizons, which was adopted by the International Minerals in chemical corporation to prospect in Hickman County where deposits had previously been prospected at considerable expense and with difficulty, by small, temporary, hand-dug shafts.

Water laws important to the mining industry are those which govern or affect the right to use water, to dispose of water after using it in mining or milling, and to discharge waste material into water-courses. They include statutes and court decisions having general applicability, as well as others that pertain specifically to mining. THE INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO WESTERN WATER LAW Despite sharp differences of opinion, the water law the Spaniards brought to the Southwest appears to have included some form of appropriation of water. The Mormons, who settled in Utah in the mid-nineteenth century, also developed a system of appropriative water titles. But by far the most profound impact on western water law was made by the gold- seekers who flocked to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California after the discovery of gold in 1848. Much of the gold was extracted from the ground by hydraulic or placer mining, and so the-miners' rights to the use of water became fundamentally important. Since there was no organized government in the foothills and no laws other than those made by the miners, they helped themselves to the land, the gold, and the water needed to work their claims.' They established and enforced regulations governing the acquirement and holding of mining claims and their rights to the water they needed.'In 1879 Justice Field, former Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, spoke for the U. S. Supreme Court in saying that the miners were "emphatically the law-makers, as respects mining, upon the public lands in the State.""

Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes northnorthwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south, Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along slumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.
