The hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. The Process Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

WITH the acquisition of the Nichols Copper Company ' and the development of the large Copper Products manufacturing and selling organization, the Phelps Dodge Corporation had attained two of its important goals. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. These mines are situated in Griqualand West, which is now a part of the Cape Colony. The town of Kimberley is in latitude 28o40' South, longitude 25o10' East, about 640 miles northeast of Cape Town and 450 miles from Port Elizabeth on the east coast. It is connected with these towns by a railroad, which has been completed during the present year. The mines are located in a desert country, resembling the desert portion of Arizona. The elevation above sea-level is about 4000 feet. The climate is exceedingly hot during the summer months. A new cementing technique has been developed which is particularly applicable to permanent-type well completion operations. The technique makes use of the accelerating effect of calcium chloride on setting time and strength development of cement cake deposited in squeeze cementing. An unique feature is that the accelerator is applied after the unaccelera-ted cement slurry has been squeezed and the excess has been reversed from the well. Laboratory data on the accelerating effect of calcium chloride applied to the fi1ter cakes of three low-water-loss cementing compositions demorzstrate that the procedure results in relatively rapid development of strength and impermeability of the cement cake. Simulated squeeze-ceinenting tests made in the laboratory likewise corroborated the practicality of the procedure. The laboratory tests showed that a newly developed oil-emulsion cemerzting composition is more susceptible to acceleration of set than are modified cements containing high percentages of bentonite. The acceleration procedure has been used successfully in field operations. INTRODUCTION Nature of Problem In squeeze-cementing operations, a substantial amount of time is consumed in waiting on the cement to develop strength after it has been squeezed into the well. Frequently, an interval of 18 to 24 hours or longer is required for the development of strength sufficient to prevent failure of the cement during subsequent operations in the well. Reduction of this waiting-on-cement time offers appreciable savings both in time and in money. A particular type of squeeze-cementing operation to which an increasing amount of attention has been given is encountered in permanent-type well completion operations wherein perforations are to be squeezed off1. In this procedure, it is customary to pump the cement slurry down the tubing and out into the perforated section through a retractable extension pipe. Squeeze pressure is then applied, which forces the cement slurry into the perforations and causes the build up of a compact filter cake of cement within the perforations. The excess slurry remaining in the hole is then removed by reverse circulation. The extension pipe is then retracted, and, if a new interval is to be perforated, a perforating gun is run through the tubing. The newly perforated interval may then be tested by swabbing. In such operations, it has been customary to allow approximately 20 hours or so for hardening of the cement squeezed into the perforations. This time interval is usually measured from the time that the cement is reversed out of the hole to the time that subsequent swabbing is started. If the cement has not developed strength at the commencement of swabbing, the pressure differential caused by swabbing results in failure of the squeeze job. At the time that the work described in this report was initiated, particular consideration was given to the reduction of waiting-on-cement time in squeeze cementing by the permanent-type completion technique. Consequently, much of the experimental work was directed to this specific objective, though the process which was developed for acceleration of strength development has possible application in other than permanent-type completion operations. PooR results in coal washing and in ore concentration are sometimes attributed to the shape of the particles in the feed. It is well known that the shape of a particle influences its rate of fall in water. This is evidenced by the value of the constant C in the Rittinger equation for the velocity V of settling in water, V = C-D(d- z ), where C has the following values: 2.73 for roundish grains, 2.37 for long grains and 1.92 for flat grains. This report, which is based upon data obtained during the course of coal-washing investigations conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, gives the results of a method or procedure of screening in which the particles are separated into three shapes and shows the deportment of these shapes when coal is treated on a coal-washing table. The method consisted in first screening the coal with Tyler standard square-hole sieves, followed by screening tests of each of these products with screens of rectangular opening. For this purpose Tyler "Ton-Cap" screens were used; each square-hole product was subsequently sized with two Ton-Cap sieves so selected that their shortest dimensions were approximately 75 and 50 per cent., respectively, of the opening of the square-mesh sieves. For example: A product which is through 8 mesh (0.093 in.) and on 10 mesh (0.065 in.) is screened on slotted sieves which have openings 75 and 50 per cent. of the 0.065-in. opening in one direction and an opening of not less than 0.065 in. in the other direction. For convenience in discussion, the particles retained on the first slotted screen are termed "cubical"; those retained on the second slotted screen are termed "prismatic" and those passing the second screen are called "flat." (See Fig. 1.) The square-mesh screens separate particles according to two dimensions, length and breadth; the slotted screens divide them further according to the third dimension, or thickness. Prismatic particles have a mass of about two-thirds, and flat particles of about one-half, that of cubical particles of the same square-mesh size. The screen-

IN his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Wark1 makes the following sig-nificant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of col-lector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater impor-tance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a col-lector, and even without any reagent, pro-vided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism. 1(127),3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirm their results.

GRAVITY concentration is a general term designating processes for separating and sorting granular material by means of forces that depend on the density, size and shape of the particles. When these forces are applied to the particles the latter are caused to move, those of a given density along one path and those of a different density along another, until ultimately they are sufficiently separated to be removed from the operation of the process. The forces producing this separation are in general complex and, unfortunately, no completely rigorous analysis of them has as yet been devised. The science of the hydrodynamics of viscous fluids deals with the little that is known about the problem. Every observer of nature is familiar with the fact that an object moving in a fluid encounters a force of resistance. We have only to walk against a brisk wind or stir a cup of coffee, or observe the slow fall of a grain of sand in water, to experience directly the fact that such forces exist. The exchange of force between an object and a fluid in which it is moving operates on the fluid as well as on the object. Thus a sailboat may be set in motion by the force exerted by the wind on the sail; but the sail also deflects the wind-furthermore, the water in which the boat floats is set in motion by the force exerted by the boat as it cleaves through the water. The wind is thus enabled to do work on the water through the intermediary of the boat. In general, an object moving through a fluid encounters a force that opposes the motion and also acts to change the motion of the fluid. In gravity concentration we are dealing with this force of resistance acting - on the granular particles that are to be separated. Furthermore, the motion induced in the fluid by a particle will in turn affect the motion of a neighboring particle. This effect will be reciprocated and in consequence there will be an exchange of forces between all the particles in the material. These effects are complex and the most that can be expected is that we may be able to determine in a qualitative way how they operate. In gravity concentration, then, the following types of forces may be distinguished as acting on the particles: 1. The force of gravity, which acts on every particle in the system in proportion to its mass. 2. Buoyant forces, which arise from the force of gravity acting on the fluid.

INTRODUCTION During the past few years emphasis has been placed upon methods of estimating the future expectancy of gas production from natural gas fields. Before technical methods were applied, the production expectancy over future years was based upon the knowledge of gas well behavior, learned through long experience and embedded in the "know-how" of men long in the gas producing business. It is doubtful that a technical study of future expectancy of a gas field or a group of fields was ever prepared for the preliminary planning of a natural gas pipe line system built prior to about five years ago. The decline in well production capacity was naturally recognized by all familiar with the business since its earliest beginnings more than 75 years ago. In 1953, the Bureau of Mines published Monograph Number 7, "Back-Pressure Data on Natural Gas Wells and Their Application to Production Practices," which gave to the industry the first technical analysis of the decline in production of individual gas wells. This method affords a means of estimating the future production in relation to decline in reservoir pressure. The demand for technical determination of expectancy of future gas productivity from fields or a group of fields led technical men to the application of the knowledge of well behavior to the problems. The decline in a well's ability to produce as pressures declined could be estimated by the use of the curve known as the "back-pressure potential curve" as developed by the Bureau of Mines. A field containing few, or even numerous, wells could be analyzed on the basis of the sum of potentials of all wells. In most studies of this nature, the problem is to estimate the rate of production that can be expected, not only from present wells but also, from wells that will in the future have to be drilled into the reservoir being studied. The "back-pressure potential" method requires that the following data be known or estimated: (1) Proved gas reserves. (2) Current shut-in pressures and rate at which shut-in pressures change with production. (3) Back pressure potential data on wells in the source of supply. (4) Ultimate number of wells which will supply gas, and their potential. (5) Limitations on productivity such as line pressures against which the wells will produce, friction drop in the producing string, and so forth. It is evident that the resulting estimate of gas available in each year for a future of say, 20 years, contains many uncertainties. While the method may have considerable merit for a field that is fully developed, it cannot be completely dependable in fields that are only partially developed. In such cases, some of the data upon which it is based can only be estimated or assumed. In the study of this problem during the past few years, a method has been developed which we believe has great merit, especially when applied to fields subject to substantial future drilling, and when applied to the study of fields which, on the average, appear to have characteristics similar, in general, to the average of the fields used in the development of the "yardstick" outlined herein. From an analysis of the production history of 49 reservoirs which are depleted, or nearly depleted, a curve has been constructed which shows the average performance of the reservoirs during the declining stages of production. When properly applied, this "average performance curve" can be used to determine the stage of depletion at which a reservoir or group of reservoirs will no longer be able to yield a given percentage of the original reserves. "AVAILABILITY" AND "AVAILABILITY STUDIES" The rate at which. a reservoir will yield its gas depends basically upon physical factors, such as the thickness and permeability of the sand, the effect of water drive, if any, and other conditions, and upon economic factors, such as the number of wells drilled. Within the ranges set by the physical conditions, a rate of delivery tends finally to become established. The rate (or range of rates) represents a balance between the interests of the operator, who desires the maximum return from his property and of the pipe line owner, who desires to maintain a firm supply for his market. This balance, which is influenced by the terms of the contract, determines the capacity which will be developed by the operator, and the time and rate at which the decline in production is permitted to occur. During the radium boom in the early part of the twentieth century, the basic chemistry of uranium was fairly well defined. Uranium production has progressed from the status of a radium by-product to a very important industry. With the ever increasing need for more efficient and cheaper methods of processing uranium ores, new techniques are being developed. Since uranium and vanadium often occur together in nature, the latter element will also be considered. As production rates, costs, and certain aspects of uranium chemistry are still classified by the Atomic Energy Commission, these will not be discussed. Domestic uranium deposits, in general, are composed of the minerals carnotite, which contains hexavalent uranium, and to a lesser extent, pitchblende and uraninite, which contain tetravalent uranium. Carnotite also usually contains vanadium. The uranium and vanadium contents of these ores vary considerably. The ores currently processed on the Colorado Plateau assay from 0.2 to 0.4 pct U and from trace amounts to 5.0 pct V. On the other hand, the phosphate rock deposits of the southeastern U. FOR the past several years it has been growing practice to install circular shafts at deep mining operations. Several factors have brought this about. Throughout eastern and midwestern coal fields circular shafts have been conventional for many years. Where large bodies of coal are mined, a production shaft may have a life of 20 to 30 years. Quantity production is essential; therefore the shaft must have a large cross-sectional area for larger skips and cages. Mechanical mining has become a necessity if a company is to stay in business today. Continuous mining machines and cutting, loading, and hauling equipment must be taken in and out of the mines. If the access shaft is not large enough there will be expensive dismantling and assembling. This has become a problem at many operations, particularly in the western sections where ore was originally mucked by hand into small cars and hoisted by a skip through a narrow rectangular shaft having small compartments. Mechanical loaders must be dismantled to wheelbarrow size to go into these mines.

This investigation was concerned with the aluminum-oxide particle dispersions, the mechanical properties, and the re-c,uystallization characteristics of some internally oxidized copper-aluminum alloys. Obserued hardness vaviations are in agreement with variations in oxide particle size revealed by electron metallographic studies. The increase in yield strength caused by internal oxidation is quite sensitive to matrix grain size and is accompanied by a loss of ductility, particularly at higher temperatures. Elevated temperature ductility is con-side,vably improved if major grain reorientation is accomplished by ve recrystallization prior to testing. The oxide particles offer a considerable restraint to softening during annealing after cold deformation. THE diffusion of oxygen under appropriate conditions into a suitable alloy causes solute oxide particles to be precipitated at an inward moving interface.1,2 Previous work has shown that the hardness

MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.

Many constitution diagrams do not indicate the limits oJ solid solubility of the silver-rich solid solutions below 200°C. Thermoelectric measurements were employed to determine this limit in the nieighborhood of room temperature. The appearance of a second phase causes a discontinuity to occur in the tkevtrroelectric power as a function of cornposition at constant temperature and pressure. This discontinuity was employed to determine the limits of the silver-rich terzinal solid solutions of the Ag-A l, Ag-As, Ag- Bi, Ag--Ge, Ag-In, Ag-Pb, Ag-Sb, and Ag-Sn systenls at 30°C. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution of binary alloys of silver. The available data have been compiled by Hansen1 and Elliott.2 However, many of the binary diagrams do not show the limits of solid solubility of the silver-rich solutions below about 200° C. This work was undertaken in an attempt to extend these limits to the neighborhood of room temperature . PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pct (by weight) of impurities. The materials were weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony alloys were melted in A1203 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and were poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles; they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. The $-in.-diam ingots were heated to 750°C and were forged and hot-rolled down to 0.1 by 0.1 in. The wires were pickled in a 25 pct HNO3-75 pct H2O solution to remove any oxygen-rich surfaces. The wires were then annealed at 550°C for 2 hr in a dissociated ammonia atmosphere. They were then furnace-cooled for 20 hr to room temperature in this atmosphere. The wires were cold-drawn to 0.0808 in. diam. The finished wires were again annealed at 550°C in the same manner as in the first anneal. Thermoelectric Power. The thermoelectric power of a single specimen of each alloy was determined against pure silver which contained a maximum impurity content of 0.014 pct by weight. The wire specimens were straightened and then cleaned with ethyl alcohol. They were then reannealed in the same way as the finished wires to assure that any residual stress would be at a minimum level. Previous work has shown that the presence of small amounts of stress has the effect of decreasing the thermoelectric power. The alloy specimen was soldered to the pure silver wire to form the measuring junction. A standard set of copper leads was then soldered to the reference junctions of the thermocouple. These junctions were maintained in separate dewar flasks which contained finely shaved melting ice during the test. The thermal electromotive forces of the thermocouples were measured at four temperatures between 15° and 45°C. A known source of electromotive force was balanced against the output of the thermocouple until a null balance was reached. The data were then expressed in terms of the thermoelectric power at 30°C. The results were then converted to absolute thermoelectric power, s303.3 These data have an average error of less than ±0.2 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All of the experimental data are given in Table 11. Since the electromotive forces of the binary alloys of silver were determined against the pure silver from which they were made, the resultant thermoelectric powers are only a function of the intentionally added binary elements at the constant test temperatures. This provides a direct measure of the effects of the alloying elements. The absolute thermoelectric power of an alloy of silver is given4 by:

IN view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of Llewellyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal- cross-sectional area, and 6,000 11). in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, while the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes.

When supplies of high pressure mercury or other liquids are required in analytical work, it is convenient to have the source of supply at a relatively constant pressure and available in sufficient volume to satisfy the requirements of the apparatus in use. It is also desirable that the pressuring device be as simple and as inexpensive as possible and convenient to operate. This pump combined with a small storage reservoir containing gas under pressure has the attributes of (1) positive control of the maximum output pressure through the use of a regulator in the low pressure air supply; (2) an increasing capacity as the rate of withdrawal of mercury from the pressured system is increased; and (3) simplicity, requiring only the use of a lathe, drill press, and welding unit in its construction. DESCRIPTION Essential parts of the pump are shown in Fig. 1. In appearance the unlt is similar to the usual steam pump in common use in industrial applications although considerably smaller in size. The main differences lie in the area ratio of the air and mercury pistons and in the design of the air valve mechanism. Approximate diameters of these pistons are 4.25 in. to 0.375 in. respectively, giving an area ratio of about 130 to 1. The air piston (2) is attached to the end of shaft (4), with the mercury piston being merely a reduced extension of the shaft. History ILLINOIS has so recently attained the third place in the oil production of the United States that few realize its great importance, or are aware of its highly profitable character. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent. of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $30,000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier.
