Commercial strip mining of coal was first begun in the state of Illinois in 1911.l The annual tonnage of coal produced from coal strip mines in the state was very small until 1924, when the strip mines shipped 1.68 pct of the total state shipping mine tonnage. Since then, strip mines have gradually come into their own by producing a sizable percentage of the coal produced in the state. Table 1 shows the coal tonnage shipped from both underground and strip coal mines in the state of Illinois for selected years. The table illustrates the major role that strip mines play in the state's coal industry. Today, strip mining is generally conducted in areas where the coal seams lie so close to the surface of earth that a stripping method of mining the coal seam is cheaper than an underground method. Strip mining not only recovers 100 pct of the coal deposit, but may also be used as a method of mining large acreages of coal abandoned by the closing of underground mines. Open cut or strip mining is a very highly mechanized method of producing coal and is carried on in three distinct and separate operations. The first of these is uncovering or exposing the coal seam so that the coal is made available for mining. The second operation is that of actually mining the coal. The third operation is the washing, crushing and grading of the coal according to the producer's market. Description of Shovel The Marion 5560 power shovel is used in the first of these three operations. The large electric-powered shovel works forward and back across the coal deposits, removing the overburden of dirt, rock, and clay in successive cuts of 30 to 60 ft deep and 40 to 80 ft wide. The shovel has a maximum cutting height of 95 ft, but around 60 ft is considered to be the maximum economical cutting height by the operators. The smaller the depth of cut, the more economically the shovel will operate until a minimum cut of 15 ft is reached, below which the efficiency decreases rapidly. The Marion shovel may be used in tandem stripping in excessive depths of overburden. The other type of excavating equipment used in the tandem team is generally a dragline with a long boom of about 180 ft. In tandem stripping, the dragline is used to remove the upper portion of the cut and to place it at a maximum dumping radius from the place of removal. The Marion 5560 power shovel is then used to remove the overburden left above the coal seam and to deposit it at the shovel's maximum dumping radius. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensitive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal—roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instrument is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods. For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.1 Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measure-ments performed.

The kyanite minerals, including kyanite, silimanite, and andalusite, are anhydrous aluminum silicates with the formula Al2O3SiO2. lumortierite and topaz are also included in this group because they are closely allied in composition and thermal behavior. However, leither are mined commercially today. They ire typical metamorphic minerals which are found in metamorphic rocks on every continent. Kyanite minerals are prized chiefly for their refractoriness and are important components in a broad range of acid refractory products, especially in mortars and castables. World production of kyanite minerals is currently about 250,000 tpy and has been increasing at the rate of 3 to 8% a year for many {ears (Anon, 1972). While kyanite minerals lave widespread occurrence, the consumption of kyanite minerals is concentrated in the relatively few highly industrialized areas where refractories are manufactured, and which in turn are typically close to the major iron and steel producing regions of the world. Thus northern Europe, England, the United States, and Japan are the principal consumers of refractories and kyanite minerals. Of these countries only the U.S. is a significant producer. The largest use for domestic kyanite, both raw and calcined, is in the manufacture of refractory mortars, cements, castables, and plastic ramming mixes. In these applications kyanite constitutes from 10 to 40% of the mixture, the balance being refractory clays and coarser grog materials. A certain proportion of raw kyanite is used to offset the shrinking of the clay binder, whereas the calcined kyanite is used in the coarser sizes for body. Certain high grade refractory shapes and kiln furniture are composed chiefly of graded sizes of calcined kyanite bonded with a little ball clay. In most applications, however, kyanite is used only to fortify the mix or as a minor ingredient. Some manufacturers of mullite brick use domestic calcined kyanite for the fine-grained portion of the brick, but seldom in quantities exceeding 10% by weight. Kyanite is used by ceramic manufacturers of wall tile and sanitary ware to offset shrinkage and cracking after firing. Indian kyanite has traditionally been used to make the coarse grog sizes needed for the manufacture of mullite brick, and for the grog portions of mortar, cement, and castable mixes. It has been largely replaced, however, by synthetic mullite, high fired flint, and diaspore clay or calcined bauxite for other applications. Indian kyanite is available in lump as well as in granules and concentrates, as are sillimanite materials from India and South Africa. Andalusite is available as 8 mesh granules and as fines with chemical analyses not unlike those of domestic kyanites. From time to time and from place to place minor amounts of other aluminum silicate minerals such as dumortier- ite, topaz, and pyrophyllite have been made available at various prices and specifications, but have not been significant factors in the refractory industry. A new log has been developed for quantitative formation evaluation which is based on a measurement of the length of time slow neutrons survive before they are captured in the rocks and fluids. The logging instrument employs a cyclically pulsed neutron generator and a gated scintillation counter which is synchronized with the source. The source emits short, intense bursts of 14 mev neutrons once every 1,000 microsec and is quiescent between bursts. During the period the source is quiescent, the detector is electronically actuated for two independent preselected intervals. A comparison of the counting rates during these two intervals gives a measure of the rate of decay of the slow neutrons and of the associated gamma radiation. The average neutron lifetime in most earth formations is in the range from 50 to 500 microsec. It can be measured during a continuous logging operation at conventional logging speeds. The design of the logging instrument is described and the results of tests are compared with theoretical predictiom. Formulas are developed which give the relationship between log response and formation properties. It is shown that the method is particularly sensitive to formation fluid salinity, and that salt water saturation can be measured accurately in either cased or open hole. The measurement can be made independent of borehole size, fluid type, casing and tool position in the hole by properly selecting the intervals during which the measurements are made. The results of tests with a prototype logging tool are given. INTRODUCTION A new nuclear logging system has been developed which employs the Accelatron,* an accelerator-type neutron source, and accurately measures formation brine saturation in an entirely new way. It has produced a type of formation log with better sensitivity, greater sampling depth and simpler quantitative interpretation than any other nuclear log thus far suggested. The new Neutron Lifetime Log* employs a pulsed electromechanical neutron source and a synchronously gated radiation detector. A prototype instrument has been field tested during recent months to demonstrate the operability of the apparatus and the feasibility of the method. Tests in wells and simulated boreholes have confirmed theoretical predictions and have shown that formation param ters can be measured independent of casing and other borehole parameters. Preliminary results of field tests have indicated that the log may have important and widespread applications. BASIC PRINCIPLE OF NEUTRON LIFETIME LOG The Neutron Lifetime Log is based on the fact that neutrons emitted by a source in a well are rapidly but not instantly captured by the material around the source. Their capture is a matter of statistical probability; the greater the number of capturing nuclei and the greater the "capture cross section", the greater is the probability that a neutron will be captured quickly. The average life of a thermal neutron in vacuum is about 13 minutes, but in common earth materials, the average neutron life ranges between extremes of about 5 rnicrosec for rock salt and perhaps 900 microsec for quartzite. The Neutron Lifetime Log responds to variations in this average neutron life. The theoretical basis for a log of this general type has been well understood by nuclear logging experts in many laboratories both in America and in Russia, and develop mental work along these lines has been in progress for many years. The Russian literature has reported both theoretical and experimental work1,2 but in this country there have been no published reports of progress toward a practical logging instrument. The logging instrument is designed to measure radiation produced by slow neutrons during selected intervals when no neutrons are being emitted by the source. The source is arranged to emit neutrons in bursts or pulses. During the quiescent interval between the pulses, it is possible to observe the exponential "decay" of the neutrons and the neutron-induced radiation as the individual neutrons progressively disappear due to capture by atoms in the formation or the borehole. When a short pulse of 14 mev neutrons is emitted by a source in a borehole, the individual neutrons are slowed to thermal energy within a few microsec. Thus, a cloud of "slow" neutrons is formed around the source within 10 to 50 microsec after the pulse. This cloud is most dense within a few inches of the source, and is progressively less dense out to a radius of about 3 ft, where radiation from the source is practically undetectable.

ALLOYS of gold, silver, and aluminum with elements of the groups BII, BIII, BIV, and BV were prepared by a rapid quenching technique (splat) and were examined by X-ray diffraction. Five new intermediate phases were found and will be described briefly herein. For the gold and silver systems, the concentration ranges having an electron/atom ratio e/a of 1.4 to 1.5 ("3/2 Hume-Rothery phases") were studied primarily. Master alloys were prepared from high-purity metals (99.9+ pct or better) by melting either in evacuated fused silica capsules or by nonconsum-able-electrode arc melting in an argon atmosphere. Small pieces, 20 to 50 mg, of each alloy were blast-atomized to form a splat, by a technique similar to that described by Duwez and Willens.1 The technique used for this study is described in detail in Ref. 2; it utilizes a resistance-heated graphite crucible with a small hole at the bottom, directed toward a metal substrate or quenching plate. The prepared alloy rests over the fine hole, through which it is expelled by an explosion shock wave in the form of fine droplets (1 to 50 µ) of molten metal onto a copper or silver substrate, which is maintained at about -190°C. The resulting very high cooling rates (see Ref. 2 for quantitative measurements) can prevent the process of nuclea-tion and growth in many instances, resulting in the formation of metastable phases. The splat particles were transferred to a GE-XRD5 diffractometer and maintained at -190°C, where they were examined with CuKa radiation. The samples were then allowed to warm to room temperature or were heated to higher temperatures until the equilibrium structures formed. Of fifteen alloy systems considered, nonequi-librium structures were encountered in six; these are described below and summarized in Table I. In the system Au-Sb a metastable £ phase (A3 type, hcp, a = 2.898 + 0.002A; c = 4.731 * 0.004A; c/a = 1.633) was found in the concentration range Au + 13 to 15 at. pct Sb. This phase is isomorphous with the stable phases in the systems Au-Cd, Au-In, and Au-Sn, all at an average e/a ratio of 1.4 to 1.5. The concentration range of one-phase metastable was deduced from the small amounts of supersaturated gold solid-solution phase present in the splat product. It was found that ? could also be retained by splatting onto a substrate held at room temperature: however, decomposed into the equilibrium phases Au + AuSb2 after heating to 200°C for 1/2 hr, or on holding the powdered splatted alloy at 20°C for several months. Calorimetric measurements will be made in an attempt to decide the question whether ? is metastable at all temperatures or whether it is a stable phase at low temperatures. There is evidence that another phase, possibly also close-packed but with a different stacking sequence, can be obtained by rapid quenching of alloys with a different antimony content. Klement, Willens, and Duwez3 reported the existence of an amorphous phase on quenching Au-Si alloys (25 at. pct Si) to - 196°C. They found that on heating to room temperature another phase of unknown crystal structure was formed. This was confirmed (see Table I); however, the new crystalline phase, designated as ?, could also be formed simply by rapid quenching to room temperature, and even was found to exist already in the as-cast Au + 20 at. pct Si alloy. It was found that ? decomposed into Au + Si on the specimen surface at room temperature. This behavior, and the question whether or not there is an equilibrium-temperature region for ?, have not yet been resolved. It is probable that ? (Au + 20 to 21 at. pct Si) is cubic of the -brass type (D81-3) with a = 9.60, + 0.01A and N = 52 atoms per cell [compare 6 (CU-Sn)4]. Except for two very weak lines, the powder pattern of about thirty lines could be indexed on this basis; however, a determination of the atom positions has not yet been attempted. For Au-Ge the C phase was observed at about 21 at. pct Ge as reported by Luo et at.5 Lattice parameters a = 2.876A, c = 4.73,A, c/a = 1.64 were found. In the Au-Pb system, formation of a ? phase was not observed, but in the lead-rich region at 75 at. pct Pb, broad peaks belonging to an amorphous phase were found. The maximum diffracted intensity occurred at 28 = 32.4 deg which is about 1 deg larger than the position of the (111) line of lead (Cuka). For Ag-Pb, an amorphous phase analogous to the one found in the Au-Pb system was observed; this metastable phase exists probably at about 75 at. pct Pb. Since no lead-rich alloys were tested, all alloys consisted of silver + amorphous phase at -190°C. In A1-Ge alloys, line-rich and complex powder patterns were obtained at about 30 at. pct Ge; they bear similarities to those of aluminum and germanium, but are of lower symmetry; the existence of more than one intermediate phase is possible. THE mechanism by which austenite forms in steels has received a great deal of attention in the literature in past years.'-'* Our present knowledge concerning this mechanism has been recently summarized quite concisely by Bain and Vilella,1 while a few years ago the literature was carefully reviewed by Roberts and Mehl.² The consensus is that any ferrite-carbide interface is a potential site for the nucleation of austenite during heating above the Acl temperature, and that the new austenite generally grows freely to produce approximately equiaxed grains, whether the carbides are initially present in the lamellar or the spheroidal form. In the case of eutectoid steels, growth of the new grains of austenite continues until contact is established with other grains. Then growth stops and an initial austenite grain size is established which does not change until the heating is continued to some high temperature at which grain coarsening begins. In the case of pearlitic steels which are not of eutectoid composition, the proeutectoid ferrite or carbide may interfere with the growth of the austenite if the temperature is not above that designated the A63 or the Acm, respectively. Although a large amount of work has been done to establish the mechanism of austenite formation in steels, it became clear to the present author while he was studying the transformation characteristics of a new 0.25 C Mn-Si-Ni-Mo hypoeutectoid steel" that the manner in which austenite grows in steels depends upon some factor, or factors, not previously considered. This was indicated by the fact that when this steel in the spheroidized condition was heated above the Ae1 temperature the new austenite which was formed did not envelop the carbides and grow in an equiaxed manner as described by Bain³ or spheroidized steels. Instead, in this steel, the austenite was observed to grow much more readily in certain directions than in others with the result that at temperatures within the Ac1-Ac³ ransformation range the austenite grains were acicular in shape. The excess ferrite was also found to be acicular with the distribution of these phases being such that a lamellar pattern was developed. This unusual directional growth of austenite in this new steel initially in the spheroidized condition is illustrated by fig. 1. A search of the literature revealed that this type of growth was not necessarily peculiar to this steel for similar microstructures had been observed by other investigators.4-8 However, the full significance of these microstructures does not appear to have been appreciated, and no work has been done to determine the conditions responsible for this directional growth of austenite or to arrive at an understanding of it. It was for this purpose that the work described in the present paper was carried out. Material: During the course of this investigation a total of 15 steels was studied. They consisted of hypoeutectoid, eutectoid and hypereutectoid carbon steels, and hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid alloy steels, all of which were obtained in the annealed condition from commercial warehouse stock. As received, the carbon and alloy hypereutectoid steels had microstructures which consisted of spheroidal carbides in ferrite, whereas the eutectoid steel and the hypoeutectoid steels were pearlitic. The term "electrocapillary amalgamation" is used in this paper to designate amalgamation processes that depend upon electrocapillary phenomenon; i.e., the action of an electric current upon the surface tension of mercury at the contact with aqueous solutions. Electro-capillary amalgamation is selected as a name for these processes because the electrocapillary phenomenon has been found to be the effective agent in the use of sodium amalgam, as well as in the various processes using an electric current from a source outside of the amalgam. Amalgamation processes that depend upon supplying an electric current to the amalgam from an outside source, such as batteries and generators, have previously been called electrical amalgamation processes. There has been a tremendous amount of experimental work done on amalgamation processes involving the use of an electric current, as shown by the large number of patents issued on these processes: the earliest in 1885 and the latest in 1934l. Regardless of all the experimental work, the fundamental principles causing the operation of electrocapillary amalgamation processes have not been described. The explanation usually given is that an electric current keeps the amalgam bright and clean. Patent No. 328532 states: It is well known that when amalgam plates are used for collecting gold and silver from their ores the surfaces of these plates are liable to become tarnished or sickened by certain substances contained in the ores or in the current of water which is employed to carry the ore over the plates, and that in this condition they are unfitted for amalgamating the particles of gold and silver. To prevent this and to keep the surfaces of the amalgamation plates always bright and in a better condition for catching and amalgamating the particles of gold and silver I employ electricity in the following manner: . . . A similar explanation is given 49 years later, in patent No. 1953364: The sodium (Na) ions lose their charge at the cathode becoming sodium atoms, which do not react with the electrolyte, but follow the grounded electrical current through the mercury body producing in their passage sodium amalgam and liberate themselves in the amalgamation compartment when brought in contact with the fed

Laboratory and plant data covering 12 different operations show that lower than "standard" ball mill speeds increase grinding efficiency. In the case of high pulp-level mills, the gain is so great that the increase in capital cost of the larger lower speed mill will pay for itself in less than a year's time. THE object of this paper is to show the economic advantage of operating ball mills at relatively slow speeds. Although many operators know that grinding costs are reduced by operating mills at low speeds, they seldom do so for a variety of reasons. When capital is limited, first cost is of primary importance, and installation of the less costly, highspeed mill is favored. When materials are in short supply, as during a war period, capacity rather than economy is the primary consideration. Existing mills are then speeded up to provide the desired increase in capacity, and new mills are purchased without consideration of maximum grinding efficiency. When the mill speed is increased to secure more production, the increase in grinding costs is often obscured by the total benefit derived from the additional output. This increase in grinding cost is seldom recognized as being sufficient to be worth correcting. For these reasons one may be lead to the erroneous conclusion that slow-speed operation is only occasionally applicable. The effect of mill speed on grinding efficiency has been studied in laboratory tests."! The results of some of these tests are given in tables I and I1 and fig. 1. In these tabulations, batch tests using ore charges of 125 to 200 lb were considered comparable to high pulp-level operation and charges of 50 to 100 lb comparable to low pulp-level operation. For the high pulp-level operation, these tests indicate the existence of a maximum in efficiency for operation at a speed of 50 pct of critical, both for the soft (dolomite) and hard (chert) ore. In low pulp-level operation, a decrease in speed increases the efficiency of grinding dolomite; no maximum of efficiency appears in the range of speeds tested. For these reasons one may be lead to the erroneous conclusion that slow-speed operation is only occasionally applicable. The effect of mill speed on grinding efficiency has been studied in laboratory tests."! The results of some of these tests are given in tables I and I1 and fig. 1. In these tabulations, batch tests using ore charges of 125 to 200 lb were considered comparable to high pulp-level operation and charges of 50 to 100 lb comparable to low pulp-level operation. For the high pulp-level operation, these tests indicate the existence of a maximum in efficiency for operation at a speed of 50 pct of critical, both for the soft (dolomite) and hard (chert) ore. In low pulp-level operation, a decrease in speed increases the efficiency of grinding dolomite; no maximum of efficiency appears in the range of speeds tested. A froth flotation unit was added to the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation's Empire washer at Empire, Alabama, in the fall Of I94O following an investigation of possible ways and means of recovering coal values from settling-tank overflow or slurry. Officials of the DeBardeleben corporation hoped that some practical and reasonably economical way could be found for recovering fine coal from overflow water, although there had as yet been very little progress along this line in the Alabama coal fields. The Bureau of Mines was asked to cooperate in the project through its Southern Experiment Station, at University, Alabama. This paper presents a brief description of the process and the installation that resulted from the investigation of the overflow water or slurry problem at the Empire mine. The experimental data include' as a Part of this Paper were obtained during the course of the investigation in 1940 Since that time, however, the flotation unit has been running more or less continuously without significant operational changes and is still Performing pretty much in accordance with the data obtained in 1940. Flowsheet at Empire and Type of Coal Treated The Empire mine is developed on the Black Creek bed near the the border of the Warrior field. The coal in this bed is extremely low-ash and although there is an almost complete absence of bone coal and partings, the bed is so thin that, with mechanized mining, a high percentage of rock from roof and floor inevitably gets into the run-of-mine coal. The thickness of the Black Creek bed throughout the part of the Warrior field in which it is mined extensively is rarely over 30 in. and probably would average about 25 in, the coal is of the high-volatile A rank and of excellent quality, but as a result of admixture of roof and floor material, the run-of-mine product usually contains I ; to 20 pct rock by weight. he following is a proximate analysis on an "as-received " basis of a typical seam sample from the Empire mine:' moisture, 3.0 pet; volatile, 34.6 fixed carbon 58.3; ash, 4.1 This sample shelved 15,070 Btu per pound and 0.9 pct sulphur on a moisture-and-ash-free basis. Expansion of concentrator capacity at Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake plant resulted in a dramatic increase in the production of fines. With iron recovery from the fines running only 18%, Carol Lake engineers initiated an extensive test program which resulted in the installation in July 1977, of a full-scale plant utilizing Reichert cone concentrators. Results to date have indicated a 100% increase in iron recovery from the concentrator's fines product. Carol Lake is located near the western boundary of Labrador, Newfoundland, some 960 km (600 mi) northeast of Montreal. Concentrator operations began in 1962 with a design capacity of 7 million t/y (7.7 million stpy). The bulk of the concentrate was pelletized at a 6 million t/y (6.6 million stpy) pelletizing plant completed in 1963. The remaining concentrate was sold in the international market. The concentrator was first expanded in 1966 to 10 million t/y (11 million stpy) capacity. In 1967, the pellet plant was expanded to match the increase in concentrate production. Sales increases led to a further expansion in 1973. By 1977, more than 40 million tons (44 million st) of crude ore were processed to recover in excess of 17.42 million tons (19 million st) of concentrate and 10.4 million tons (11.5 million st) of pellets.

The two mining districts of Pachuca and Real del Monte, well known for their antiquity and the extraordinary richness of their veins, are situated, 3 miles apart, only 62 miles north of the City of Mexico—the first being on the western, and the second on the eastern slope of the Pachuca range of mountains which bounds the great valley of Mexico. Close to the celebrated mining region of Pachuca is located the city of the same name, capital of the State of Hidalgo, at 2460 meters above sea-level and 20° 07' 35" North latitude, with 35,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom work in the mines; the remainder being Government employees, merchants, and a small number engaged in less important industries. The city extends along both sides of the canada which carries the waters of the river called "Avenidas de Pachuca," the banks of which are united by four bridges at regular intervals. The attention of the traveler approaching the city is first attracted by the appearance of the mountains, barren of vegetation, bounding the city with rocky cliffs and steep declivities, the grades of which serve as foundations to the irregular and varied groups of houses. Above these are the dumps, and, close by them, the mouths of the shafts, covered with conical tile roofs. The smoke of the chimneys, the noise of the mills and the appearance of some of the constructions reveal at first glance the industrial character of the place. At the left of the entrance to the canada, the mountain of San Cristobal, celebrated for the famous vein of Xacal, one of the richest and earliest exploited in the district, rises 450 meters above the city.

A technique is described whereby the resistance of an emudian to breaking can be quantitatively determined. Produced ailfield emulsions are usually the water-in-oil type and, accordingly, do not conduct an electrical current. However, there is a threshold of A-C voltage pressure above which an emulsion will break and current will flow. The more stable an emulsion, the higher the required voltage. A Fann Emulsion Tester, modified so that low voltages (0 to 10 v) can be accurately measured, is suitable. This technique has application in evaluating the effect of a demuksifier on the stability of an emulsion. Emulsions can, in essence, be titrated with demulsifiers by adding a quuntity of demulsifier, stirring, and measuring the voltage required to cause current to flow. Any synergistic effect of two or more materials added simultaneously can be followed accurately. A demulsifier that significantly lowers the threshold voltage (from 100 to 400 v to 0 to 10 v for the emulsions in this study) is effective and can cause the enlulsion to break. A demulsifier that will bring about this drop in the threshold voltage at low concentration ir very desirable. The technique is also well adapted for rapidly screening demulsifiers. INTRODUCTION Stable emulsions in produced reservoir fluids resulting from certain well stimulation and completion procedures are common problems. The use of suitable demulsifiers can often mitigate these difficulties. At the present time, a rapid and efficient method for selecting satisfactory demulsifiers is not available. It is badly needed. Reliance is now placed primarily on trial-and-error procedures. A new test method has been developed which permits a more rapid and precise selection of demulsifiers. It involves measuring the electrical stability potential of an emulsion before and after a demulsifier has been added. This paper describes this method and shows where it should have application in field emulsion problems. NATURE OF OILFIELD EMULSIONS Two immiscible components must be present for an emuhion to form; we are concerned here with crude oil and water. An emulsifier must be present for tin emulsion to be stable. J Emulsifiers can be substances which are soluble in oil and /or mter and which lower interfacial tension. They can be colloidal solids such as bentonite, carbon, graphite, or asphalt which collect at the interface and are preferentially wet by one of these phases. Unrefined crude oils can contain both types of emulsifiers, A popular theory is that, of the two phases in an emulsion, the dispersed phase will be the one contributing most to the interfacial tension.' Usually this phase contains the least amount of emulsifier. The stability of a water-in-oil emulsion is affected by the fol1owing: l) viscosity; (2) particle or droplet size; (3) interfacial tension between the phases; (4) phase-volume ratios; and (5) the difference in density between the phases. A stable emulsion is usually characterized by high-viscosity, small droplets, low interfacial tensions, small differences in density between its phases, and slow separatian of the phases. It also has low conductivity (high electrical stability potential). Water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions"' are both common; however, oil field emulsions are predominantly water-in-oil emulsions. The emulsions which commonly occur during oompletion and stimulation operations contain a combination of several of the following: acids, fracturing fluids (oil, water, acid), and formation water and oil. Produced emulsions usually contain formation water and oil. Emulsions form in oil wells because oil and water are mixed together at a high rate of shear in the presence of a naturally occurring or unavoidably produced emulsifier. During the completion and stimulation of productive zones, and while formation fluids are being produced, oil and water are very often commingled. These mixtures are formed into emulsions by agitation which occurs when the fluids are pumped from the surface into the matrix of the formation or produced through the formation to the surface. Restrictions to flow (such as perforations, pumps, and chokes)".'" increase the level of agitation; tight emulsions are more likely to form under these conditions. Often an emulsified droplet is an emulsion itself.'" Therefore, emulsion-breaking problems can be quite complex. The complexity can be even greater if a third phase (gas) is included. Demulsifiers operate by tending to reverse the form of the emulsion. During this process, droplets of water become bigger, viscosity is lowered, color becomes darker, separation of the phases faster and electrical stability potential approaches zero. Any of these effects could be followed as a means of determining emulsion stability. However, electrical stability potential is the most reproducible and most easily measured parameter for following the stability of a water-in-oil emulsion.

Pima Mining Co., managed and 50% owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., with Union Oil of California and Utah Construction and Mining Co. sharing equally in the remaining 50%, is a medium-sized open pit copper mine situated in the very active Twin Buttes mining district, 22 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. In 1965, a three-part paper described Pima's growth from 3,000 tpd (tons per day) in 1957 to 18,000 tpd nine years later. Within months of the completion of the last stage of this sixfold expansion, studies were being wound up on a further major expansion, this time to 30,000 tpd. This expansion is now a reality. Details of the enlargement of the crushing and concentrating plant have already been covered in a recent paper, and the present paper will cover pit engineering studies, equipment selection, and current operating practices. Key factors in top management's decision to go ahead with the latest expansion were: (1) a substantial increase in ore reserves coupled with an appreciable decrease in grade, (2) a generally favorable outlook for copper prices, and (3) better than expected performance by mine and mill equipment purchased for the expansion to 18,000 tpd. For the pit design studies, particular attention was paid to pit stability, a problem area at times in the past, and to the location and grades of the final ramp systems. In drawing up the long-term mining schedule, the attitude of the ore, with the higher grade material lying deeper, was a critical factor and considerable stockpiling of lower-grade material in the early years had to be accepted in order to keep the annual grades close to the average of the orebody. The expansion called for major purchases of mine equipment in order to gear up the mine for delivery of 30,000 tpd to the concentrator. HE results of an experimental investigation by McEvily and Machlin have indicated that a strong relationship exists between the processes of cross slip and fatigue. Whenever dislocations can cross onto an intersecting plane and expand thereon, as in AgCl crystals, the usual type of S-N behavior is obtained, but when such a process is difficult, as in NaCl crystals, fatigue does not occur in its usual manner, if at all. MgO, because of its crystal structure (NaCl type) and slip systems ({110}<110>) would not be expected to fail in fatigue. However, Cornet and Gorum2 have found something akin to the usual type of fatigue behavior for MgO crystals. The purpose of this note is to attempt to resolve this apparent discrepancy. In Cornet and Gorum&apos;s work as-cleaved crystals were tested under cyclic axial loading, whereas in McEvily and Machlin&apos;s work chemically-polished crystals were tested in reversed bending. Because of the difference in specimen preparation, the major effort of the present work was directed toward comparing the behavior of as-cleaved as opposed to chemically-polished specimens. The effect of type of loading seemed less important, but a check was made on this also. Eighteen bend tests and one axial load test were made. The specimens were cleaved from Norton magnorite blocks, and measured 1 by 3/16 by 1/8 in. To avoid failures in the grips, the thickness of the bend specimens was reduced from 1/8 in. near the ends to 0.04 in. in the central portion. This reduction was from one side of the crystal only. Twelve specimens were polished in orthophosphoric acid to remove the damage due to cleavage. The other six specimens were not chemically polished so as to maintain the as-cleaved condition of the crystal faces which had not been reduced. INspite of considerable interest in the kinetics of ordering of the alloy Cu3Au there is no direct information available on the activation energy for atom movements in this alloy, such as that obtainable by radioactive tracer-diffusion studies or by internal friction measurements. Accordingly, this alloy was examined to find out whether it displays an internal friction peak resulting from stress-induced ordering, similar to that studied extensively in other alloy systems.1-3 Measurements of the internal friction as a function of temperature were made in a torsion pendulum similar to that described by Ké.8 Wire specimens 0.032 in. diam and 11 in. long were used. The wire, obtained in the cold-drawn condition,* was annealed at 900C in a quartz tube to obtain a large grained sample, and then mounted in the torsion pendulum furnace. Internal friction is reported here as the lag angle, 4, which is equal to the logarithmic decrement divided by .ir. Fig. 1 shows the internal friction at three frequencies (the frequency given for each curve is the value measured at the peak). The data for these curves were obtained on cooling one specimen from 460C to just above the critical temperature for long-range ordering, which is about 390C for this alloy. In this way, the internal friction is measured under conditions where the alloy is in the disordered condition throughout the run. The curves obtained at frequencies of 2.15 and 1.29 cps show peaks in the range of measurement. The corresponding peak for the 0.78-cps curve is estimated, from the shift of this curve relative to the others, to be located slightly below the critical temperature (at 385C). The fact that the peak can be observed above the critical temperature is good evidence for the belief that it is a stress-induced ordering phenomenon similar to that which is observed in other disordered alloys.
