The electrolytic copper refinery at Copper Cliff, Ont., is operated by the Ontario Refining Co., Ltd. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd.; The American Metal Co.; The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.; and Ventures, Ltd. The plant was the outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as closely as possible. The refinery is near the intersection of the Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is about one mile south of The International Nickel Company's smelter at Copper Cliff. The standard-gage track systems of the refinery and of the smelter are connected by a standard-gage timber railroad trestle that crosses the railway and the highway by means of steel girder spans. The Canadian National Railway has access to the plant by means of this trestle and the nickel company's tracks, so that the refinery has connections with both the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National railways, as well as a direct connection with The International Nickel Company's smelter, from which the bulk of the copper to be refined is hauled by the latter's electric locomotives. Buildings The refinery (Fig. 1) covers approximately 60 acres, enclosed by an unscalable chain-link fence. The main buildings have a content of 23,000,000 cu. ft., with a total roof area of approximately 600,000 sq. ft. and near them are the substation, cooling pond and main standard-gage track system (Fig. 2). A ladder track for car storage extends 1200 ft. south of the coal-pulverizer tracks and the scale house is on this spur. The intake and pumphouse for fresh water supply are at Kelly Lake, about 3000 ft. south of the plant. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. Chromite is the only ore mineral of metallic chromium and chromium compounds and chemicals. Because of this fact, chromite and chrome ore are used synonymously in trade literature. In commercial market quotations, chrome ore is the term commonly used. Chromite per se, because of properties imparted by its chromium content, is used in refractories and in special purpose molding sands for metal casting. There are many other minerals containing some, generally minor, amounts of chromium, but none are commercial sources of the element (Thayer, 1956). Chromium and chromite have many diverse uses that, directly and indirectly, critically affect vast segments of our modern industrial system. Most important are probably the metallurgical applications wherein chromium is a component of heat-, abrasion-, corrosion-and oxidation-resistant and high-strength alloys of many types. Stainless steels are the largest volume category of chrome-bearing alloys. Chromium chemicals are used in leather tanning, in pigments, dyes and mordants, printing, chemical process industries, photography, pharmaceuticals, metal plating, pure chromium metal production, and for many other purposes. Chromite is a necessary constituent in basic refractories indispensable for the production of steel, copper, cement, and glass. Under present conditions, the US and North America, with the possible exception of Cuba, have no commercial ore reserves. There are chromite deposits, as will be described, but they would be used only under highly abnormal conditions if all outside sources were cut off for an extended period. All chromite used in the US is imported from the eastern hemisphere in which are contained the principal world reserves. The main suppliers in 1980 were the Republic of South Africa (43%), the USSR (21% ), the Philippines (12%), Albania (11 %), Turkey (8%), and others (5%). The strategic nature of chromite is obvious. End Uses-Grades and Specifications As noted before, the three principal uses for chromite are metallurgical, refractories, and chemical with a fourth minor use as foundry molding sand. For metallurgical applications chrome ore is first reduced in electric carbon arc furnaces to various types of ferrochromium alloys. There are high, medium, and low carbon ferrochromiums with carbon ranging from 0.01 up to 10%. Chromium itself ranges from 50 to 73 %. Ferrosilicon chromium and ferrochromium-silicon grades have chromium from 33 to 67% and silicon from 3 to about 48%. Since iron is reduced with chromium, the Cr:Fe ratio of the ore will determine the ultimate grade of the ferrochromium whereas carbon and silicon can be controlled during processing. MgO, A12O3, CaO, and excess SiO2, are removed in slag. A small amount of pure chromium metal is prepared by alumino-thermic and electrolytic processes from essentially iron-free chrome components that have been made via the chemical route. The higher grades of ferrochromium with chromium in the 66 to 73% range can only be made from ores with not only high chromium content, but low iron, i.e., high Cr:Fe ratio. These ores, conventionally termed metallurgical grade, have Cr2O3 contents of 45 to 56% with Cr: Fe ratios of 2.5 to 4.3. A standard composition is generally 48% Cr2O3 and 3:1 Cr:Fe ratio. Very high grade ores are often blended with lower grades even with the high iron chemical grade. For some ferrochromiums, additions of high alumina refractory grade are used as slag conditioners to facilitate smelting while still contributing chromium values. A lower grade ferrochromium, the high carbon charge chrome, has become the predominant grade in use today for making chromium-bearing steel alloys. This

THE Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1034, 1935, 1936 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. ORE TREATED The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartzites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about 1 oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct. CRUSHING OPERATIONS The first stage of crushing is done underground where the oversize from 12-in. grizzleys is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35° slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. Unmodified disilicide coatirigs were applied to sheet-tensile specimens ofCb-Dg3 and Mo-TZM veJractovy- metal alloys. Coating thickness, degree of coating-substrate interdiffusion, and specimen geonzetry (notched and plain were included in the variables studied. Tensile tests were made to determine the ductile-lo-brittle transition temperature. The disilicide coating modestly increased the transition temperatlre of TZM, but had no effect on 043. Neither material condition (recrystallized or stress-velieved) nor specimen geometry (notched or unnotched) significantly altered the effects of coatings on the transilion temperatures of. the alloys. Cracks in the brittle coatings did not propagate into the substrate, and fracture modes appeared to be the same for both un-coated and coated specimens. MOST potential structural applications for refractory metals and alloys involve exposures to oxidizing environments at elevated temperatures. The general lack of oxidation resistance of these metals will require protective coatings to allow fulfillment of their potential. Currently preferred coatings for the oxidation protection of refractory metals are brittle intermetallic aluminides or silicides. These are typically formed on the surface of the refractory-metal substrate by a diffusion reaction between the substrate and a gaseous or liquid medium that is rich in aluminum or silicon. Because of the brittleness of these coatings, they will sustain no plastic deformation at low temperatures. They are frequently cracked by cooling from the coating temperature because of the thermal-expansion mismatch with the substrate alloy. Even if they survive cooling intact, they crack rather than sustain deformation under load at low temperatures. Thus, when a coated refractory metal is strained beyond the elastic limit of the coating at low temperatures, the mechanical environment of the substrate would include both static and dynamic cracks. These might be expected to influence the flow and fracture behavior of the substrate. This could be manifested in an altered fracture mode and/or an increase in the normal ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the refractory-metal substrate. This paper presents the results of a research program that was conducted to determine the influence of the presence of a brittle surface coating on the low-strain-rate tensile behavior of typical refractory metals at low temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Material Preparation. Thirty-mil-thick sheets of molybdenum TZM alloy (Mo-0.5Ti-O.1Zr) and colum-bium D43 alloy (Cb-IOW-1Zr-O.1C) were obtained commercially. These alloys were selected as substrate materials representing two classes of materials important in current refractory-metal technology. The TZM was in the stress-relieved condition, and exhibited a heavily fibered grain structure. The D43 had been processed by the duPont "optimum" fabrication schedule,' and exhibited slightly elongated grains typical of this process. Tensile specimens of two geometries were prepared from these materials: 1) plain specimens with 0.2-in.-wide 1.0-in.-long gage sections; 2) specimens similar to above, but with a 0.06-in.-diam hole drilled in the center of the gage section, providing a stress concentration factor, Kt, of 2.5. The "notch" geometry was selected to represent a typical condition of a rivet hole or other geometric discontinuities as might be encountered in various applications. Machined specimens were degreased, with a final rinse in acetone, prior to the application of coatings. Specimens of each substrate and configuration were pack-siliconizedin a particulate mixture of 80 pct A1203, 17 pct Si, and 3 pct NaF. Specimens were embedded in this mix (contained in graphite retorts) and coated in an electrically heated argon-atmosphere furnace under time-temperature conditions to effect nominal 1- and 3-mil-thick silicide coatings: Coating Thickness, mils Thermal Treatment 0.6 to 1.4 24 hr at 982°C 2.4 to 3.2 48 hr at 1093°C Coating kinetics were similar for both the TZM and D43 substrates. These treatments had little or no visible effect on the substrate microstructure as determined by optical metallography. The coatings on TZM were essentially single-phase unmodified disilicides, while those on D43 showed substantial evidence of modification by proportionate reaction with the respective substrate elements or phases, as shown in Fig. 1. It was recognized that these coatings might not be particularly desirable regarding protective capability. However, it was desired to circumvent possible inter -ferring chemical interaction with the substrate by pack additives such as chromium, titanium, boron, aluminum, and other elements that typify the better protective coatings for these materials.' ONE often reads of the rich placer gravels in many of the canoe-traveled rivers of South America. The apparent richness of these gold-bearing gravels impresses the traveler, and in fact he may see batea after batea showing enough colors to figure over a dollar per cubic yard. These workings are called "playas" from the Spanish word playa, meaning shore or beach. Many workings have been reported in tropical rivers, but to my knowledge no dredge has made a success in such deposits. Investigation generally shows that the area of richness is limited and especially that the depth of the rich concentration is hardly ever more than a few inches. The Cauca river in Colombia, South America, is noted for its many rich playas.. This river rises near Popayan in the southern part of Colombia, flows north through a narrow valley between parallel mountain ranges and empties into the Magdalena river near Maganque. The airline distance between source and mouth of this river is only about 500 miles. The rainfall is large and the lower Cauca appears to be about the size of the Missouri river in the United States. From its mouth up to Valdivia, in the State of Antioqua, it is navigable. Above Valdivia is a. narrow gorge, above which the river is again navigable for some distance. The part of the Cauca where the playa panning is most noticeable is from Valdivia down to Where the Nechi river enters the Cauca, a distance along the river of about 100 miles. The current in this part is swift, so that the stern-wheel river steamers make the trip with some difficulty. In the course of my work in this section of Colombia I have had the opportunity to make a study of several of these playa workings and will give in detail the conditions observed.

The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for' example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the `Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is I a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs .should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say ", "So help me God ", and "God save the King" Fare in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will suffice' to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, `subjunctive', meaning * The student is referred to `A New English Grammar', by E. A. Sonnenschein, published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. This textbook (see pp. 60-71 in Part III) discusses the subject luminously.

Nanafalia aged bauxitic kaolins which straddle the Chattahoochee River in a NE-SW trending line anchored by Eufaula, Ala., and Andersonville, Ga., apparently derive from the same Piedmont source. A genetic interpretation is offered which describes the Nanafalia as a shoreline deposit in which the blanket elastics of the Andersonville area represent an ancient freshwater swamp and the lenticular Eufaula bauxites represent meander fills in an ancient tidal flat or barrier island. Mining operations in both areas are described and economic forecasts are presented.

LITHIA compounds have a place in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries and lithium minerals in glassmaking and ceramics. The metal, although rare, is used to a minor extent in alloys. During the nearly 50 years of production of lithium minerals in the United States, the silicate mineral spodumene has continued as the chief source of raw material for the manufacture of lithium salts. Although twice as much lepidolite, a lithium mica, has been mined, most of it has been used in the making of certain types of glass. Amblygonite has been an additional but minor source of lithium compounds. Triphylite, petalite, and zinnwaldite have also been utilized in the past. All of these commercial lithium minerals contain low percentages of lithium (Table 1). In 1938, a new raw material for manufacture of lithium compounds made its appearance. This product was crude dilithium sodium phosphate (Li2NaPO4), obtained as a by-product of manufacture of potash and soda chemicals from the brine of Searles Lake, California. Searles Lake, which is now dry, lies in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, California, and consists of a large mass of salts. It was estimated by the United States Geological Survey that the crystal body contained about 25 pct voids, which are filled with a saturated brine. The brine consists mainly of the sulphates, chlorides, carbonates, and borates of sodium and potassium. Several other acid radicals, including phosphates, are present. Lithium is present in the brine in an amount corresponding to 0.01 15 pct Li2O. In the course of evaporation of water from the brine, during the process of manufacture of sodium and potassium chemicals, dilithium sodium phosphate crystallizes out and is recovered by a flotation operation. The lithium concentrate is filtered and dried and is then ready for shipment. It analyzes from 19 to 21 pct Li2O and now constitutes the highest known grade of crude lithium material. It is and will continue to be a major source of lithium for manufacture of lithium products. Sifto Salt Div. of Domtar Chemicals Ltd. has developed a new method for installing roof bolts in the high backs of its 1-million-tpy rock-salt mine at Goderich, Ontario, on the east shore of Lake Huron. The method teams a telescoping- boom hydraulic crane with a specially developed combination auger-drill and bolt-tightening ma- chine. One man, controlling all operations from a basket supported at the end of the crane's telescoping boom, installs an average of 100 5-ft roof bolts per shift, at heights to 45 ft. The mine has very long backs that are not as stable as might be expected. The result has been that roof scaling has occupied an unusually high percentage of the underground work force. About six years ago, company officials decided to go to 100% roof bolting of all backs as a safety measure. The present roof-bolting equipment is the result of a development program instituted at that time to find a faster and more economical method for doing the job.

Arthur Launcelot Collins was born at Truro in Cornmall, England, July 8, 1868. His father, J. H. Collins, is well kuown as an engineer, and his books have been widely read in this country: Arthur was the third son. Three of his brothers are engaged, as is his father, in the profession of mining engineering. His education, gained partly at St. Austell, partly at Falmouth, and partly at Nuttall's Collegiate School in Truro, England, was supervised by his father, who was then Lecturer on the Mining Sciences to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. In 1881, J. H. Collins went to Rio Tinto, in Spain, as chief chemist and metallurgist, and it was there that Arthur began his practical work in the laboratory and continued his studies in chenlistry and mineralogy. To the latter science he was deeply attached; and he never lost an opportunity of adding to his cabinet of minerals, of which he was an ardent collector. In 1883, he became assayer and general assistant to Mr. Nicol, Manager of the Peña del Hierro copper-mines, ncar Rio Tinto. AS reported in a recent paper,' we attempted to measure the response to stress of as-quenched Fe-Ni-C martensites (Ms of -35°C) in both the micro-and macrostrain regions. To avoid effects associated with the diffusion of carbon, tensile specimens were quenched from room temperature at 78°K and tested after 15 min in situ. It was assumed that the transformation had terminated and that the retained austenite was essentially stable. In the tensile tests microplastic strains of the order of 10"* were measured at stresses below 20 ksi. It was concluded that the observed strains were due to the motion of dislocations in the martensite, the dislocations having been introduced during transformation. It was argued that transformation or plastic deformation of the retained austenite did not contribute to the non-elastic deformation measured in the microstrain region. In contradiction to the above argument, Magee and paxton2 have more recently shown that the strain due to isothermal transformation of retained austenite to martensite can contribute to plastic deformation at low stresses even at 78°K. Moreover we were unaware (nost)-a culpa) of a paper by Machlin and cohen3 in which it was clearly shown by resistance measurements that isothermal transformation at 78°K leads to the formation of an additional 1 pct or so of martensite after the initial athermal transformation, even in the absence of external stress. We have verified Machlin and Cohen's results in the following manner. A capacitance microstrain gage was placed on a tensile specimen before immersion in liquid nitrogen. After 15 min at 78°K detectable burst phenomena had ceased and it was then possible to obtain a continuous record of the additional extensional strain due to spontaneous isotherma1 transformation. The results for the Fe-Ni-C series studied are shown in Fig. 1, and are similar to those of Machlin and Cohen who investigated a low-

The ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent, of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment. Gravity Concentrator The gravity concentrator has a capacity of about 465 tons in 24 hr. The mill buildings are of wood. The mill was built in 1905 to handle approximately 90 tons in 24 hr.; since that time several additions have been built and various changes have been made in the flow sheet. Mine opening stability was investigated by loading model openings to failure. Eight-inch plaster blocks were cast with small uniform section openings passing through the centers. After curing, the models were jacketed and loaded hydrostatically in a closed vessel. Opening size, shape, and orientation were varied to determine how these factors influence opening stability. THE investigation described in this paper is a continuation of a project begun in 1946 by Bernard York and W. E. Bush. .The experimental method used in the investigation involves the hydrostatic loading of a model mine opening to failure. Most investigators agree that this loading closely approaches actual conditions in very deep mines. The conditions are further idealized by using an essentially isotropic model material. The experiments consist of casting 8-in. plaster cubes, or 8-in. diam cylinders 8-in. long, having a relatively small uniform section hole passing through their centers. After thorough drying, the models are jacketed in a flexible plastic bag and loaded hydrostatically with water in a closed vessel. At about 300 to 500 lb per sq in. pressure the central opening fails. The fracture pattern resulting from opening failure is studied in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the opening. Simultaneous measurement of pore and elastic properties of socks under a wide range of triaxial stress conditions may be made with equipment and methods developed in this paper. Tests were run on three outcrop sandstones at several confining pressures and axial stresses up to approximately 80 percent of failure stress. The greater reduction in porosities and permeabilities occurred in the hydrostatic loading portion of the stress cycle, but substantial reductions in both properties did occur upon application of deviator (triaxial) stress. Triaxial elastic moduli were calculated from strain gauge measurements. Both Young's moduli and shear moduli were found to increase with increasing confining pressure. Poisson's ratios increased with axial stress but showed no consistent change with confining pressure. Only very general relations were observed between pore and elastic properties. The lesser decrease in porosity and permeability at higher stress values is related to increase in rigidity of rocks at higher stresses. INTRODUCTION Many investigators have studied the effects of hydrostatic stress on the properties and behavior of rocks. A few have studied the effects of triaxial stress fields on individual physical properties of rocks. To our knowledge no one has measured simultaneously pore and elastic properties of rocks under a wide range of triaxial stress conditions. This is the purpose of this work. Rocks exist in the subsurface under what Jaegerl refers to as "polyaxial" stress conditions (all principal stresses unequal). When two of the three principal stresses are equal, this is referred to as triaxial loading. The triaxial method of loading is most commonly used in modern testing work because experimental difficulties in measuring physical properties of rocks are greatly reduced over polyaxial testing. Although triaxial loading may not reproduce subsurface conditions precisely, subsurface stress conditions are never known precisely anyway. Triaxial testing would seem to be more realistic than testing under hydrostatic loading (all principal stresses equal) for application of results to subsurface problems. The objectives of this work were threefold: (1) to develop methods of measuring simultaneously pore and elastic properties of rocks under triaxial stress conditions, (2) to determine whether changes in these properties are of sufficient magnitude to be considered in subsurface calculations and (3) to attempt to relate changes in pore properties and elastic properties since they will have been measured at the same time under identical loading conditions. REVIEW OF EARLIER WORK PORE PROPERTIES Several investigators have studied the effects of stress on the physical properties of rocks. Fatt and Davis2 showed the reduction of permeability of rock with hydrostatic loading. McLatchie et al.3 and Knutson and Bohor4 related permeability reduction to compessibility of reservoir rock, again under hydrostatic loading. Wble,5 and later Redmond,6 evaluated the effects of applied radial pressure on conductivity, porosity and permeability of sandstones. In this latter work, no axial stress was applied. Dobrynin7 reviewed much of the previous work done . on the effects of overburden pressure on physical properties of rocks. He concluded that changes in physical properties are controlled to a large extent by pore compressibility of the rock. Several sets of curves developed from empirical relations are presented. These curves permit estimation of change of properties with net overburden pressure, knowing the pore compressibility and porosity of the rock. During the past 5 years, research directed toward the development of titanium alloys having improved strength-ductility relationships and heat treatability has been carried out at Battelle for the U. S. Air Force.1"3 In the course of this work, a method of heat treating ß-stabilized titanium alloys was developed which produced a wide range of useful properties.4 The heat treatment consisted of two steps: a) solution treating at temperatures in the a-ß phase region, and b) overaging at a lower temperature in the range 800°to 1100°F. Corollary to the alloy development work, research was conducted on the mechanism of the heat-treatment reaction. The investigations of Frost and co-workers on isothermal transformation in Ti-Cr5 and Ti-Mn8 alloys disclosed the existence of the transition phase, w, during the course of the decomposition of metastable ß phase. Subsequent work at Battelle7,8 'and at Case Institute by Brotzen and co-workerss further clarified the nature of the decomposition process. Beta decomposition was found to proceed by the following series of reactions: 1 2 3 4 a + Ti, My (in eutectoid systems). ßo, ßr, and ßU refer to ß phase of original, enriched, and ultimate alloy contents, respectively. Omega is a transition phase having a complex structure. 10-13 Step 4, of course, occurs only in ß-eutectoid systems. This paper presents data correlating transformation behavior with mechanical properties for the following alloys: Ti-8Mn, Ti-8Mn-2A1, Ti-4Mn-4A1, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-4Fe. The isothermal decomposition of ß in titanium-manganese alloys of similar composition has been investigated by Frost and coworkers8 and the effect of various annealing treatments on alloys in this system has been studied by Holden, Ogden, and Jaffee.14 The compositions Ti-8Mn-2Al, Ti-4Mn-4A1, and Ti-6A1-4V, were studied in the present work in an effort to define more clearly the effect of aluminum on the response to solution and aging treatments. Ogden, Holden, and Jaffee15 have invesitgated the effect of aluminum on the response of a similar alloy (Ti-8.8Mn-2.46A1) to annealing treatments, and Luini and Lee16 have made an exploratory investigation of the heat-treatability of the Ti-4Mn-4Al alloy. The Ti-4Fe alloy was studied as an example of a moderate1y active eutectoid system. Holden, Ogden, and Jaffee 17 have studied Ti-Fe alloys and have presented some hardness data for aging at 400°C for alloys of Ti-2.56, 5.01, and 7.35 iron after quenching from the a-ß field (750°C). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The experimental procedures generally used in the precipitation-hardening study are outlined in the following sections. Departures from these techniques are noted in the discussions of the individual alloys. Table I presents the nominal and actual compositions of the alloys studied, together with the swaging and rolling temperatures. In late November and early December a considerable portion of our time was devoted to obtaining a business manager for Institute headquarters. The advisability of creating such a position was suggested in 1949 in the report of the Johnson committee. In that year, however, the Institute had a deficit of $72,000 so every effort was made to minimize expense. At that time most of the duties that normally would be assumed by a business manager were given to Newell Appleton who became office manager, convention manager, purchasing agent, and assistant to the secretary. So many responsibilities were his that he could not devote the necessary time to all of the many things that needed attention. H. H. Vasoll, representing a firm that made a study of Institute head office procedures early last fall, made a recommendation that "a business manager and controller from outside the present organization" be obtained, who would supervise the work of accounting, addressograph, purchasing, book and journal orders, filing, and mailing depts. He further recommended that Mr. Appleton be made administrative secretary, in which position he would act as head of an "Institute Activities Dept." He would devote his time to convention planning, meeting arrangements, travel accommodations, membership control and promotion, and public relations, and would assist the Secretary on special problems. Thus, Mr. Appleton retains some of his former responsibilities and will take more of the load off our shoulders in the conduct of affairs at Institute headquarters. The rest of his former work will be in the province of the newly created "Business Office Dept." Peter J. Apol is the man finally selected for the post of business manager. He is a young man of 32, a native Michigander and a graduate of the University of Michigan where he received a B.S. degree in business administration in 1940. He then spent three years in the Navy and has the rank of Lieutenant in the U. S. Naval Reserve. Three more years were spent in the U. S. Maritime Service as chief purser, and another year as chief paymaster for the Pope & Talbot Steamship Co. The past four years have been spent as head of the Greenland Construction Co., Greenland, N. H., chiefly engaged in building construction. Mr. Apol will endeavor to increase the efficiency of Institute headquarters operations and remove all possible causes for complaints of individual members. He will coordinate as seems advisable the work of various departments and install such modern business office machinery as seems applicable to our needs.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from two US mines, one Canadian mine, and a South African pilot plant operation were characterized before and after regeneration. Thermal regeneration of the carbon was investigated using factorial analysis to determine the effect of interaction of furnace temperature, retention time, and use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid washing the service carbon was investigated, including a comparison of the use of nitric and hydrochloric acids. The effect of quenching regenerated carbon was also briefly studied. Prom the data obtained, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

Although the noble building provided in New York City by Mr. Carnegie for the United Engineering Society has been pushed to about half-completion, the ceremony of laying its corner-stone was not performed until Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1906. The stone lies just back of the southeast corner of the building, on the north side-of West 39th Street. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie, Miss Whitfield, the sister of Mrs. Carnegie, Ralph W. Pope, Secretary of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Frederick R. Hutton, Secretary of the. Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Charles H. Haswell, the first Chief Engineer of the United States Navy (1836-1851), now in his ninety-seventh year, John Fritz, of the Bethlehem Steel Company, William H. Fletcher, President of the Engineers' Club, E. E. Olcott, President of United Engineering Society, and other interested friends. After an inspection of the interior of the building, the group formed about the corner-stone, which had been draped with the American flag. The exercises were opened by Mr. Olcott, who appropriately welcomed Mr. Carnegie, and briefly expressed the essential value of the building, saying, in part " The societies to be housed underneath this roof have as their aim the pre¬serving and putting in tangible form of the records of scientific accomplishments so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes. The possibility of finding the records of these results all at one center, so near the great Public Library of our city, will be an inestimable advantage to all professions. It is an occasion of no ordinary moment, therefore, when we can welcome Mr. Carnegie and have him lay for us the corner-stone of this great building which his liberality has provided." Mr. Carnegie responded in happy vein, thanking the committee for their greeting, and expressing his pleasure. in being able to do what he had done to further so worthy a cause. FREQUENT reference has been made to the increased domestic gasoline demand recorded for 1931. This increase was in the neighborhood of 7,000,000 bbl. Although smaller relatively than that to which the oil industry had become accustomed by virtue of the experience of preceding years, the increase was of substantial amount, particularly at a time when any increase at all could be regarded with eminent satisfaction. Less has been said, however, of the 18,000,000 bbl. decline in gasoline shipments to territories and foreign countries. When the loss of business outside the United States is combined with the domestic increase, there results a net loss of some 11,000,000 bbl._ in total gasoline demand. The gain of 2 per cent in domestic sales gives way to a loss of 2.5 per cent in total domestic and foreign sales. The United States actually has been losing ground in the international gasoline market since 1924, when shipments from this .country equaled 72 per cent of the gasoline shipments from the leading gasoline-producing countries of the world. A loss in relative standing was recorded with each succeeding year. As long, however, as gasoline shipments showed an actual increase, the loss in relative standing was of little concern. Foreign producing centers annually supplied an increasing share of the foreign gasoline markets, but, until the past year, the demand abroad con-tinued to increase at a pace which could accommodate all of the, increased output of foreign plants and yet require increasing quantities from the United States. It was not until 1931 that the various factors were combined so as to produce an actual and substantial decrease in the foreign demand for United States gasoline. Consumption in foreign countries generally declined, while the output of foreign refineries and the foreign manufacture of substitute fuels continued to increase. From our own viewpoint, this meant a loss of some 18,000,000 bbl. of gasoline busi-ness in foreign countries, one-half of it probably due to the lowering in foreign demand and the other half to the increased output of foreign refineries and the increased utilization of substitute fuels.
