All who are even generally aware of the tremendous rate of increase in coal washing operations must realize the growing importance of the float-and-sink test. I believe it is conservative to estimate that, in the past decade, the dollar volume of float-and-sink testing has increased tenfold. It is a simple matter of economy, then, to examine the factors that determine the cost of adequate float-and-sink testing. When the Coal Preparation Section of the Bureau of Mines entered upon a greatly expanded program of such work in connection with the synthetic liquid fuels investigations, it seemed advisable to examine these factors experimentally. The principal consideration that differentiates float-and-sink test sampling from general purpose sampling, is that the original particle size must be preserved. Therefore, the total cost of the test will be directly affected by any standard that might be proposed to limit sample bulk reduction at any given particle size. For this reason, the relationship of sample size to variability of results was the first factor to be studied experimentally. Of course, the matter is rendered complex by the circumstance that the float-and-sink test, not a simple analytical measurement but a process test, comprehends a number of more-or-less independent items of fundamental data; and as shown in the report, the' variability of the samples differs with respect to these different items. This condition and the wide variety of situations in which float-and-sink test data are used, in combination with other factors, to study complex process operations, indicate the difficulty of setting up fixed standards for float-and-sink sampling and testing. At this stage at least, it is the intent rather to obtain experimental data on the principal Factors involved so that the reader may arrive more intelligently at a procedure adapted to his problem. The authors of this paper have presented experimental data showing the relationship between size of sample and particle size for different variability tolerances with respect to percentage of sink. In further studies, data are being collected to appraise also the variability of the samples with respect to float-ash content and size consist. The scope of this work will be broadened to cover particle sizes up to 4 in., and a third series of tests has yielded similar data for a much cleaner type of raw coal. Thus, the further studies will make available a fairly comprehensive meas- ure of variability with respect to size consist, percentage of sink, percentage of middlings, and percentage of ash in the float, for three coals ranging from 3.87 to 17.68 pct in refuse content (heavy sink material) and from 4.18 to 17.52 pct in middlings. Introduction At present there are no published standards for float-and-sink test sampling. During the rapid expansion of float-and-sink test work, varying procedures have been based on adaptations of the ASTM standards for sampling coal for analyses. For this reason, a special study of gross sample reduction has been undertaken to determine the limits for this step in the operation where no reduction in particle size is to be made before testing. Float-and-sink tests are made whenever a thorough study of coal characteristics is desired. The tests may be made on samples from coal-cleaning units such as jigs or tables, or coal samples may be tested which are taken from a loading boom, railroad car, or the coal seam itself. The resultant gross sample may be large and pose a problem of sample reduction. The question is, then, how much can the sample be reduced and still fall within preassigned limits of accuracy of the original gross sample of coal? Coal from channel samples may be crushed to liberate impurities and then separated into various gravity fractions from which washability curves are drawn; from these curves, it is possible to determine the cleaning characteristics of the coal. THE present state of iron blast-furnace practice is metallurgical rather than mechanical; the tend-ency is toward intensity rather than toward ex-tension. The engineers have built blast furnaces big enough and strong enough, and have furnished accessory equipment ample and accurate enough for the present state of the art, but the metallurgical side has been too much neglected; the metallurgist, rather than the engi-neer, is now the man on whom the present and future progress in iron blast-furnace practice depends. The mining engineer has produced great tonnages of iron ores, and has kept ahead of the demands for quantity; now the metallurgist is improving the chemical and physical qualities of this product by ore-dressing and other forms of beneficiation. For a generation or more, the principles of mechanics have had most influence in the advancement of iron blast-furnace practice; atten-tion now is given more to the principles of metallurgy, chemistry, and ore-dressing. This metallurgical progress is taking place inside and outside the blast furnace. The two great determining factors of the inside operation are the slag, and the rate of combustibility of the coke. Outside the fur-nace, the progress is, and will be, along the lines of more careful mixing of ores and iron-bearing materials, in the sizing and washing of limestone, and in the char-acter and structure of byproduct coke.

Warriner, then general manager, called for a comprehensive study of timber treatment, treating solutions, and related operations. Because of the impossibility of procuring accurate costs and other pertinent treating data, the American Wood Preserving Co. agreed to treat a car of mine timber at the Port Reading plant of the Reading Railroad. Fig. I shows the treating data collected at the treating plant on this timber, which was installed in two of the Lehigh mines in 1925. In the latter part of 1925, a survey of the tunnels and gangways of the company's Panther Valley mines was made to determine the proportion of gangways or tunnels timbered, cause of timber failures, approximate life of the average wood set and the approximate percentage of treated timber that it would be profitable for the company to use. Results of this survey appear in Table I. Because of the high percentage of timber that gave evidence of failure by rot, as noted in Table I, and a further study of the life of the sections where timbering was necessary, it was deemed advisable to fill 25 per cent of the yearly gangway timber requirement with treated timber. Quantities and Treatments OF Treated Timber Purchased In the early days of the program, none of the large treating companies would accept orders for small quantities of treated timber and the company was compelled to state the quantity of timber it would require at each operation in each month of the year. Table 2 is an example of the tabulation given to the various treating companies to assist them in making a yearly bid on the minimum quantity of timber required by the company during the year 1931. A bill of timber was calculated for each car, the weight of which would be between the minimum and maximum weight permitted for railroad-car loading. The treating company was paid for timber upon delivery at the operation specified. As extra cars of timber were required, they were ordered from the treating company, and payment was required On their receipt, on the basis of the piece or tonnage

THE Bagdad copper deposit is of the disseminated type (porphyry copper) occurring in a quartz monzonite stock of late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age. This stock, located essentially at the intersection of two dike swarms, is the only one of several stocks cropping out in the area which is appreciably fractured and mineralized. Most of the rocks in the area are of pre-Cambrian age, but their structures have had no discernible influence on the copper mineralization. Hypogene alteration of the quartz monzonite includes the addition of quartz, orthoclase, and sericite and recrystallization of biotite. The hypogene sulphides are pyrite, chalcopyrite, and molybdenite, the latter younger than the chalcopyrite. The late Cretaceous or early Tertiary igneous rocks, veins, and faults were controlled by northeast and northwest shear zones, the intersection of which marks the zone of appreciable copper mineralization. The minor mineralized fractures carrying the bulk of the copper have a preferred orientation parallel to the intersecting shears, and it is concluded that they are of tectonic origin rather than the result of shrinkage on cooling, crystallization, or mineralization. Supergene enrichment during late Tertiary or early Pleistocene time formed a chalcocite zone providing the minable copper ore. The enrichment was controlled in large part by northeast and northwest faults, particularly at their intersection or where the faults are closely spaced.

EXPLORATORY WORK THE related subjects of preferred orientation, directionality in physical properties, and earing tendencies of wrought metal [ ] strip have attracted the attention of metallurgists to such an extent that in the past 20 years hundreds of researches have been published on this one general problem. The anisotropy of tensile strength and elongation have been exhaustively studied in their relationship to the occurrence of ears in cups drawn from strips-20.29 and, to a lesser extent, yield strength7,11,17 and stress-strain curves" have been investigated. Despite the tremendous fund of knowledge thus accrued, no simple quantitative correlation of directionality and earing tendencies has yet been found. In a sense, this is not surprising. The formation of ears in a drawn cup clearly is a special phase of the general study of metal flow; in particular (as will be brought out in the course of this paper), ears are due to anistropy in the rates of deformation of the metal in the radial, circumferential, and "thickness" directions of the original blank. It would be difficult to effect a correlation between earing tendency and a property that may be completely independent of the flow of metal, or at best related to metal flow in an exceedingly complex fashion. Yet, it is this correlation that has been attempted; tensile strength and elongation are attributes of metal rupture, a phenomenon that has quite admirably been shown to be distinct from the phenomenon of metal flow,21 while yield strength and stress-strain

The dry cleaning of coal is a relatively new art and, as might have been expected, a number of unforeseen problems have been brought to light in the few years that dry methods of treatment have been in commercial use. The pneumatic concentrators that were first adapted to the cleaning of coal had already been developed to a fair degree of efficiency, although at low ratings, in the field of ore dressing. The concentrating machines, therefore, were in a relatively more perfected state than the general technology of dry cleaning and, for this reason, the major difficulties encountered in the early plants were in the accessory operations involved in the servicing of the cleaners rather than in the functioning of the cleaners themselves. The crudities of a new technology were further aggravated, in some cases, by meagerness of appropriations which precluded even the provision of adequate storage bins and such other facilities as had been long recognized as indispensable to the proper functioning of older types of cleaning plants. The practice of dry cleaning is now sufficiently established so that we may examine critically auxiliary equipment and operations. The cleaning processes have been so simplified, with respect to presizing of the raw coal required and the quantity of air circulated, that stinting of expenditures for auxiliary equipment is not necessary to keep the per ton cost of installation in line with complete and well designed plants of other types. Furthermore, sufficient operating experience has been accumulated to ascertain the conditions most conducive to effective operation of dry-cleaning machines; at least the essentials of a definite technology of dry cleaning has been established. Early Operating Problems The problems that have occupied the builders and operators of dry-cleaning plants from the beginning have been relatively few, but difficult of solution. The principal difficulties have been: 1. The proper sizing of the raw coal to suit the cleaning process. 2. The handling of raw coal when it is delivered wet from the mine. 3. Dust collecting. 4. The maintenance of uniformity in cleaning performance.

THE firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 14000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the development of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovered by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... . put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silver spoon downward, without the least force upward.1," This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only, is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. Shaw of Philadelphia is said to have invented a fulminate-of-mercury cap in 1814; his idea was later adopted by gunmakers in England and France. The principal advantages of

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. In 1939, at the request of The Koppers Coal Co., the Koppers Company Research Department established a Stoker Coal Research Laboratory for the purpose of investigating the performance characteristics of stoker coals in typical domestic stoker installations. Fig. I is a photograph of part of the laboratory. The material in this paper deals with the performance of one coal in a single installation. Presented are details of this installation, mechanical characteristics of the stoker, and the results of a series of burning tests in which adjustments were systematically varied. Summary OF Results Mechanical Features I. A large percentage of the total power consumed by a domestic stoker is used to operate the gear case and motor (Fig. 3)- 2' The power consumption per ton goes down with an increase in rate of coal feed (Fig. 4). 3. The automatic air control in this stoker showed advantages Over manual control (Fig. 5). 4. The air velocities through the retort tuyeres were uniform around the retort, but varied between the rows of tuyere rings (Fig. 6). 5. The crushing of coal with this stoker increased the minus 1/8-in. from 11.6 per cent to 19.2 per cent. There was a notice- able segregation of coal as it came from the retort and distribution was not uniform (Fig. 7). 6. Measurement of air entering over the fire showed that with some not uncommon adjustments this air may be a high percentage of the total air supply (Fig. 8 and Table I). Operating Performance ,. The, removal of clinker was shown to give a period of poor performance characterized by a high fuel-bed resistance and a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the flue gases (Fig. 10). 2. The fuel-bed resistance was found to decrease as the fuel bed built up in a normal response to heat demand after a prolonged hold-fire (Fig. II). 3. with intermittent operation the burning rate was almost always less than the feeding rate, The wide variations were found to be greatly dependent upon the length of the On period and the length of the intervals between On periods (Fig. 12). 4. The maintenance of a low furnace draft led to less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 13). 5. The maintenance of a minimum of excess air also resulted in less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 14). Guiding Principles In planning the investigations, the following principles were adopted: Selection of Heating Equipment.—Use only standard models of stokers and furnaces representative of those widely used.

EXPERIMENTS performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This con-clusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely con-solidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be intro-duced was the cementing material.

INTRODUCTION Interaction effects between mining operations developed on different levels of contiguously placed bedded deposits are a major problem in many parts of the United States. Efficient design criteria, derived from careful analysis of field studies as well as theoretical and model analysis, have shown that many problems that may result from seam interaction can be avoided, minimized, or on occasion used with beneficial results. Selection of seam mining sequence is rarely based only on ground control considerations, but rather on factors such as seam ownership, characteristics and accessibility. Therefore all possible mining sequences and methods must be considered in the development of multi-seam design criteria. Increased utilization of the longwall method of mining creates special problems in multi-seam mining due to the inevitability of caving and, therefore, subsidence. Considerable valuable experience has been gained in this direction from British mining operations where interaction problems are extremely common and the longwall method is the primary method used. However, limitations persist in the application of much of this information to U.S. conditions due to variation in layouts between advancing and retreating longwall systems and the inherent difference in the geologic environment. Considerable field data is available for U.S. room and pillar operations, and where successful pillaring operations have been carried out close parallels may be drawn with ground control mechanisms in longwall operations. VARIABLES AFFECTING INTERACTION Analysis of ground control multi-seam problems shows that factors contributing to interaction may be classified into variables that are fixed by the geo- logic environment and those that depend on engineering design. These may be described as follows (Haycocks et al, 1982): Fixed: (i) Depth*, (ii) Innerburden thickness*, (iii) Innerburden physical characteristics*, (iv) Stress field, (v) Seam thickness, (vi) Coal characteristics, (vii) Completed mining operations either above or below the seam to ve mined, and (viii) Age of workings. Mining: (i) Height, (ii) Dimensions and geometry*, (iii) Method*, and (iv) Spatial location of entries* *These variables are regarded as being critical effects. Few attempts have been made to quantify the variables controlling interaction. Dunham's (1978) linear regression analysis, combined with the National Coal Board's MRDE Roadway Monogram, is probably the most noteworthy. This study involved eighteen multi- seam longwall mines in the United Kingdom. The following variables were taken into account: seam depth, pillar width, opening shape, floor and roof conditions, rate of face advance, vertical seam interval, and age and geometry of overlying workings. A multi-linear regression analysis of these variables fitted by appropriate field values developed a prediction equation for lower seam stability. Although the study included many variables, it neglected the nature or geology of the innerburden. The prediction equation was found unreliable, but it did show the significance of geometry as a factor controlling lower seam stability. MINING SEQUENCES Irrespective of the type of mining method selected only four possible mining sequences are possible for two seams. Finlay and Winstanley wrote in 1934. .. "Experience has shown that whether the upper or lower seam was worked first, the subsequent working of the other seam in the same area seriously affected the roads in the seam first worked." Those effects depended upon the four basic mining sequences: 1) The upper seam is mined out prior to mining the underlying seam; i.e., the seams are mined sequentially downward and mining of the underlying seam is not commenced until operations above are completed and have ceased.

Water drives may be natural or artificial. For the case of a natural water-drive reservoir, the volume of water influx corresponding to reservoir pressuve-production history may be calculated by means of the material bal-ance-unsteady state equation. For the artificial water drive or pattern injection water flood, the material balance equation is sufficient to determine the reservoir pressure-production, injection history. However, for both cases to reliably predict reservoir performance, it is necessary to calculate the saturation distribution of the reservoir fluids at different stages of depletion. This paper consolidates the various equations used to determine the performance of water-drive reservoirs into one approach that is applicable to any reservoir that has a natural water drive or is to be produced by water injection. The numerical procedure has been simplified considerably, and the solution is adaptable to either hand calculations or digital computer operation. INTRODUCTION A water-drive reservoir is one in which the predominant source of energy for production of oil results from the encroachment of water into the oil zone. The water drive may be either natural or artificial. Water invasion takes place by expansion of water in the aquifer as a result of the pressure decline transmitted from the oil reservoir. Because water is practically incompressible, a natural water drive requires an extensive aquifer containing a volume of water many times the volume of oil in the reservoir. Provided the permeability of the formation is reasonably high, a moderate decline of reservoir pressure usually causes adequate water influx. If the reservoir pressure decline becomes excessive because of low permeability or a high rate of production, part of the oil production may result from the liberation of dissolved gas which may cause excessive quantities of free gas to be produced along with the oil. In extreme cases, reservoir pressure may decline so rapidly as to cause the oil to be produced predominantly by dissolved gas drive, leading to abandonment of the reservoir before the advancing water has had a chance to flush the entire reservoir. In reservoirs that are not connected to extensive aquifers, an artificial water drive may be created by injecting water into or around the lower edges of a reservoir. Sometimes water is injected within the reservoir through wells interspersed among the producing wells. When injection is carried out in such fashion, the reservoir is in effect subdivided into a number of separate producing segments, in each of which the displacement of oil is simultaneously taking place, and the shapes of which are fixed by the well patterns employed. Because of the natural tendency of oil and water to segregate according to their relative densities, water will tend to migrate downdip regardless of where injected. Accordingly, the injected fluids can be retained within the intended reservoir segments only when conditions are unfavorable to their migration under the force of gravity. Pattern injections are usually confined, therefore, to reservoirs having low structural relief, or low permeability, or when production and injection rates are such that fluid movements in the reservoir are dominated by the pressure gradients rather than by the force of gravity. IT would be a difficult matter to trace from the beginning the very few improvements made in the burning of fuels prior to 1860. Doubtless the crossing of the sticks of wood in building a, wood fire early appealed to our savage ancestry as a means of expediting its effectiveness for their crude culinary purposes. Stones and andirons came later in assisting the admission of air to the under part of the fuel bed, while beacons and cressets utilized metal bars as supports for the same purpose. It is probable that Tubal Cain owed his success to the use of bellows making possible the use of mixed fuel and charge upon a hearth. With the development of working in east iron, grate bars cane in, and they are still with us doing duty in every household and almost every art where heat is a factor. Little was done beyond these crude methods prior to 1860. With the advancement of knowledge came the fuel-gas producer, a. natural child of the retorts employed in supplying illuminating gas. It is only within the last 15 years that the conclusion became general that complicated systems for saving heat would not remedy deficiencies in its primary development, and within that tine there has been great advancement in the means of producing initially fire of high efficiency, so that to clay we are moving rapidly toward loth high development and high absorption, with the resultant of high efficiencies. In studying the subject of the availability of pulverized coal as a fuel, it may occur to ask, why has this not come up earlier? This question would be naturally prompted by recalling the fact that Thomas Crompton's English patents upon his methods were issued to Min nearly 40 years ago. A conclusive answer to this, however, is that Crompton at that time had very crude facilities for raking what was at best a, very imperfect pulverization of the coal, and the expense of preparation was very great. At the Atlanta meeting of the Institute in October,' 1895, some brief remarks were made by Mr. Wilkens on the above subject. It is the object of this paper to set forth the substance of these previous statements, embodying therewith additional information gained since that time, and a brief illustrated description of the method and means of the separation.* Lack of time will unfortunately not allow as complete a resume of the subject in all its phases, especially those relating to the scientific side of the question, as its novelty and importance would warrant, so that even this paper must be considered a preliminary one. It is hoped that at some future meeting of the Institute we may find an opportunity of presenting supplementary data of interest. The paradoxical title above used requires some explanation. The term " non-magnetic material " is applied to such substances as have heretofore been considered non-magnetic in the arts, more especially in the practice of ore-concentration. THE origin of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain has been investigated by many of the most able geologists, but the problem cannot be said to have been satisfactorily solved. Since 1860, numerous theories have been presented, only to be discarded, at least in part, as more complete information revealed their fundamental weakness. Real progress toward solution dates from 1902, when Hill' advanced the theory of secondary deposition of the domal materials from saturated solutions of hot saline waters ascending from great depths under hydrostatic head along structural lines of weakness. Shortly thereafter, Harris,2 using Hill's hypothesis as a basis, explained the doming and pronounced uplift associated with these salt cores as the result of forces exerted by growing salt crystals. This was a marked advance over the ideas of Coste3 and Hager,4 since no. evidence of igneous intrusives, as they assumed to explain the uplifts, had been found associated with the domes. Harris5 developed his theory until it offered such apparently plausible explanations of so many details of dome phenomena that his hypothesis and conclusions received widespread acceptance, despite some serious objections, and today his theory, somewhat modified, is considered by many able investigators to be the best explanation of, the origin of these domes. THE two chemical compounds, natural sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate, in their anhydrous condition are dealt in as "soda ash and "salt cake”-names from an earlier day that are not as precise as the present accepted terminology. Once a large part of the sodium carbonate recovered was in the ash of seaweed, so it was logically called soda ash, and the corresponding potassium carbonate, once mainly recovered from wood ashes, was called potash. The term "salt cake" was applied to the sodium sulphate resulting from interaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate, to form hydrogen chloride gas and an anhydrous cake of sodium sulphate. It was called "salt cake" and also "glassmaker's salt cake" because much of it was used in the production of glass. The two salts occur in nature in a variety of forms, but whereas an- hydrous sodium sulphate (thenardite) is fairly common, the anhydrous normal sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is almost never found in nature. The monohydrate (thermonatrite), Na2CO3.2H2O, is seen occasionally, but it is never a major constituent in natural "soda" deposits. The high solubility of normal sodium carbonate is one reason for this. While both compounds occur widely in brines, the solid salts found in nature are usually trona (Na2CO3.NaHC03.2H2O) and thenardite (Na2SO4). The natural brines containing workable quantities of the two sodium salts are largely found in the arid and semiarid portions of the western United States and other countries. The classical discussion of the resources of these brines are those of Clarke,5 Chatard.4 Packard,19 Gale,11 and Wells.28 From North Dakota to California and from Arizona to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, saline lakes, dried-up lakes, playas, and similar land-locked depressions contain accumulations of saline matter.
