INTRODUCTION Epithermal silver-gold deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. These deposits are found in all rock types, but historically, the most important deposits occur as veins in volcanic rocks (e.g., Creede, Colorado; Pachuca, Mexico) and as replacements in sedimentary sequences (e.g., Mercur, Utah; Carlin, Nevada). Increases in the open-market prices for silver and gold in the last few years have resulted in renewed interest in precious metals and the economic viability of large-tonnage low-grade deposits. These bulk-mineable deposits form as replacements in permeable horizons or as stockworks in the up- per parts of otherwise bonanza-type hydrothermal systems and newly recognized systems that erupted onto the surface as hot springs, fumaroles, or geysers. Large tonnage low-grade de- posits were an unconventional resource prior to price increases; however, now they constitute one of the main sources of precious metals in the United States and the importance is growing worldwide. This paper presents conceptual geologic- geochemical models of epithermal precious-metal deposits derived from studies of productive deposits throughout the world. Much of the data presented is not new. However, the interpretation of the data in terms of current concepts of hydrothermal processes is new. This paper deals with idealized and general ore-forming mechanisms, and no attempt is made either to explain the origin of the different chemistries of ore- forming fluids or to examine all of the variations in specific deposits due to local structural controls and host-rock compositions.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in determining the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compressive axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments u due to internal voids of varying sixes that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consults of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents vacant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

THERE is nothing new about drag-line dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with excavator mounted upon it, which has reached a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant combining a drag-line excavator on cater-pillar mounting and a gravel-washing plant on a floating barge. The most efficient ones use a bucket of 1 to 2 yd. capacity with boom from 40 to 70 ft. long. The barge varies from 20 by 30 ft. to 36 by 48, and carries the trommel screen, pump, riffle sluices and power engine.

A surprising development during the year was the continued high demand for petroleum products and the high level of crude oil charges to the stills. Generally speaking, the petroleum industry during 1946 succeeded in producing a greater quantity of crude oil and petroleum products than in any of the war years, and considerably exceeded the production of any prewar year. Daily crude still charges averaged between 4,700,000 and 4,800,000 bbl per day for 1946 and about equaled the 1945 record, although most pessimistic 1945 guesses, predictions, or fears ranged, for 1946, from only 3,900,000 to 4,400,000 bbl per day. In spite of the high crude charge to the stills, total stock of crude oil was higher at the end of the year by some 7,000,000 to 8,000,000 bbl. A similar story holds regarding stocks of the principal refined products. Gasoline on hand at year's end was two to three million barrels lower, and was considered low for the expected demand during the coming high consuming season, while stocks of light and heavy fuel oils, although some higher than a year previous, hardly reached a comfortable level. The trend in gasoline of high octane number, which has resulted in a marked rise in. the antiknock quality by the end of 1945 (five or six numbers higher than during the war and one number higher than the prewar quality of civilian motor gasoline of 1941) was abruptly arrested by an acute shortage of metallic lead for manufacturing tetraethyl lead. Government action in the form of lead price control, rationing, and the setting of octane ceiling specifications to conform to the reduced ethyl lead compound available were enforced until abrogated at the end of the year. It will be interesting to see how rapidly the octane levels will resume the rising trend, as more metallic lead slowly becomes available for making greater quantities of ethyl lead compound. As octane quality rises over present levels the disadvantage of the refiner without catalytic cracking equipment will increase. Gasoline made by catalytic cracking, without addition of ethyl lead, approximates 77 octane by the official ASTM Motor Method test, compared with 66 for gasoline generally similar in volatility made by the older thermal cracking operation. Catalytic gasoline shows an even greater improvement in the Research octane number, the comparison being roughly 86 Research versus 71 Research octane for the thermal cracked product. This higher differential in Research octane is credited by many, although not universally so, as contributing to better road performance, and consequently resulting in a more desirable product marketwise. In some parts of the country a premium of roughly one fourth cent per gallon is now being paid for gasoline with higher Research octane made possible by including catalytic cracked product in the final blends. The title of this short paper necessarily implies that friction articles comprise a distinct and unique field and are different from the other metal-powder articles, such as bearings, electrical contacts, and magnets. However, this distinction is rather hard to define in that it is really one of degree and not Of kind. It would appear that the main distinction is that friction are are articles of rather large pressing area. In other words, they are articles in which the area Of the mold in which the metal powder is pressed is relatively large. Other articles made from meta1 powders are generally of rather small area, usually a few square inches, while in friction articles the area ranges up to several hundred square inches. The satisfactory production of meta1-powder friction articles involves many production problems and a large number Of these are accentuated by the large area' Since it is impossible in the short space of this Paper to describe adequately all the problems involved, I have thought it best to merely mention some Of them and to place particular emphasis upon a problem that is common to all metal-powder articles, although it is of greater importance in the making of friction articles. This problem has to do with the effect On the properties of a friction article of small variations in the composition. However, before discussing the problems, it is probably appropriate that some mention be made of the limitations on the use of friction articles. Most engineers are familiar with the general field that can be characterized as constituted by clutch facings and brake linings, and undoubtedly have heard many stories of how metal-powder friction articles have had a service life 10 times as long as nonmetallic friction materials, and of instances where metal-powder friction articles have operated satisfactorily where no other material could be used. These instances should not be regarded as criteria for the assumption that metal-powder friction articles are capable of universal use in the friction field and will always outperform other materials. On the contrary, metal-powder friction articles are unsuitable for numerous applications, either on a performance or on a cost basis. Metal-powder friction articles will not replace wooden block brakes for wagon wheels nor cast-iron brake shoes for railway car wheels, to mention just two obvious examples. Metallic friction articles cannot be used where they must act as heat insulatorsl for they have a relatively high thermal conductivity as compared with asbestos. This is a detriment in some uses, as in certain airplane brakes having hydraulic actuators provided with rubber seals. The metallic friction material readily transfers the heat developed at the braking surface back through the material to the rubber seal and destroys it. Within its limited field, metal-powder friction material has proved satisfactory, but many problems are involved in the Selection of the proper material to use in an application and in the commercial pro-

The new electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Company of Illinois commenced operation in April 1941. The simple flowsheet using the standard current density and the economic reasons that dictated it are given herewith. The Evans-Wallower Zinc Co. built an electrolytic zinc plant at Monsanto, 111., in 1929 and operated it for about two years. The plant stood idle from 1932 and was purchased by the American Zinc Co. in 1940. Because of the condition of the , equipment, excepting the motor generator set, a complete rebuilding was necessary. The Fairmont City plant of the American Zinc Co. could treat the leach residues, the purification cake and the skimmings from the melting furnace in its various plants. This possibility permitted a simple flowsheet with good economic results. The flowsheet is shown in Fig. I. The calcined concentrates are leached in mechanically agitated tanks with spent electrolyte and such ferric iron solution as necessary. When the acid has been neutralized and the iron coagulated, the fluid is discharged to settling tanks. The underflow from these thickeners is filtered on a Moore filter; the filter cake leaves the plant for retreatment and the filtrate joins the thickener overflow. Zinc dust is added to this solution until the copper and cadmium are precipitated. The pulp is filtered through shriver presses, which deliver the purified solution to stor- age tanks, and the copper-cadmium-zinc cake is shipped for retreatment snd recovery of these three metals. The purified solution is electrolyzed; the regenerated acid is returned for use in the leaching plant and the cathode zinc, after stripping, goes to the melting furnace, from which it is cast in slabs. The skimmings from the melting furnace are shipped to the Fairmont City plant for reduction to metal in the retort furnaces. The choice of this simple flowsheet was made possible only because of the facilities of the Fairmont City plant. The long leaching period, with high acid content and high temperature which characterize the high-density process, gives a higher zinc extraction but also dissolves more impurities, which must be removed. The same is true to a lesser degree of the multi-step leaching of the western low-density plants. By the sacrifice of some initial extraction, solutid'ns can be obtained that are relatively easy to purify and give good ampere efficiency. This loss in initial extraction is made up in the retreatment of the residues in the Waelz plant. The impurities that accompany the zinc thus extracted are inconsequential when the Waelz product is treated in a distillation plant. It was recognized that this flowsheet would require a somewhat greater amount of sulphuric acid—either as acid or as sulphate sulphur in the calcine—because of poorer washing. The sulphuric acid plant at Fairmont City could deliver 60" BC. acid to compensate for the sulphate loss and the cost would be less than the cost of more intensive washing.

The Maas patent drill-hole compass, for determining the direction and dip of drill holes, is successfully used to a depth of 3,000 ft. APPARATUS FOR SURVEYING DEEP DRILL HOLES. The compass is placed in a thermos bottle or glass tube with hot liquid gelatine and lowered in a water-tight phosphor-bronze case, with a tube containing hydrofluoric acid. When the gelatine is cold the rods are pulled, the direction of the needle is marked on the tube which contained the acid, and the direction and inclination of the hole determined from this tube in a goniometer. There is nothing to get out of order and the compass can be used by any drill foreman, the mark and etching on the tube making a permanent record of direction and inclination. (See Fig. 1.)

The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

Previous to the appearance of Dr. Crane's paper, there has been little record of connected observation or rigid speculation as applied to the cause of rifling. Replying to one of Dr. Crane's letters of inquiry, I ventured my opinion that the cause of rifling was a complex problem in physics, which I had not attempted to solve up to that time, except to ascribe it to the general cause of rotation and vibration of the rods. Among those concerned with the annealing and heat-treating of aluminum and aluminum alloys, it is well known that after co1d-working a coarser grain is usually produced by slow heating than hy more rapid heating. Consequently, for the control of the grain size produced by annealing or heat-treating cold-worked aluminum and aluminum alloys, the heating rate is of considerable practical importance. References in the current literature on the effect of heating rate are numerous, but it appears neither necessary nor desirable to give here a review of the former nark done on this subject. It became evident during some preliminary work on the recrystallizn-tion of aluminium and aluminum alloys that the effect of heating rate depended upon the type of microstructure of the metal. This observation led to the following study of the relationship of the type of microstructure of the alloy to the effect of the heating rate. Materials Investigated Analyses of the aluminum and aluminium alloys investigatted are given in Table 1. THE record of the development of physical metallurgy since the founding of this Institute embraces by far the greater part of physical metallurgy as this subject is recognized today. Yet it is not to be supposed that the metallurgist interested in the properties and behavior of solid metals at the beginning of this period was without important and even fundamental information. He had an empirical knowledge of the behavior of solid metals which extended backward into prehistoric times and he had the early beginnings of many of the chapters in the science of metals. Industry was burgeoning in many directions, for methods had been developed, especially in the manufacture of steel that provided materials in extremely large tonnages, permitting applications of metallic materials on a very widespread scale. These multitudinous new uses of metals created an increased interest in the behavior of metals, and provided the basis for the rapid development of a science of metals. Indeed, the development of science generally that accompanied the industrial revolution reached a flood tide toward the end of the century, furnishing the metallurgist basic principles in chemistry, physics, mechanics, and crystallography that would shortly be extensively applied to metallic behavior. In this account, the early developments in the wide metallurgical field will be traced, in order that the status of physical metallurgy in 1871, when this Institute was founded, may be clearly seen. The subject of metallurgy in antiquity has been written upon frequently and at length. We shall here no more than indicate the main features that we need to define the position in 1871 and to provide a proper background for discussing subsequent developments. THERE are strong indications that chromium steel will one day hold the balance of power among all types of steel. Today, it is going to the forefront in military and civilian use. Stainless steel has received a tremendous impetus because of military demands. Chromium plays a primary, and possibly the most significant roll in the manufacture of stainless and other high temperature alloys. By any standard, chromium ranks among the most strategic of metals. Jet planes would still be on the drawing boards instead of flying in MIG Alley. Many of its more recent applications are the closely guarded secrets of the Pentagon and Government laboratories. Chromium has forged far ahead of the days when it merely decorated an automobile or made the American kitchen sparkle. The United States consumed one half of all chromium ores produced in the world during the past 50 years and 55 pct of those produced in the past decade. During those same periods, some 85 pct of world production of crude ores came from mines in the eastern hemisphere. Cuba is the only substantial supplier in the western hemisphere and most of the Cuban ore is suitable for use only in refractories. In presenting the strategic aspects of the chromium situation it will be helpful to give certain technical data as background without going beyond the detail needed for the survey. Use Pattern Ores containing chromium are consumed by the metallurgical, refractory, and chemical industries. In the United States, postwar consumption by these industries has been in the approximate proportions .of 47:37:16, respectively. The subject of this paper is particularly appropriate, since Daniel C. Jackling was active in early exploitation of taconites on the Mesabi Range and contributed greatly to their later economic development. After his success in developing the low grade porphyries in the West he looked for more worlds to conquer, and so undertook the concentration of low grade taconites, from which he hoped to produce commercial ore. Mesabi Iron Co., organized in 1919, actually did produce merchantable sinter from taconites in 1922. The enterprise did not prove commercial at the time, as cost of production was high and the surplus of iron ore in the Lake Superior District already contributed to a low market price, but this same property has since been developed by Reserve Mining Co. The work done by Jackling had much to do with the success of this later venture. Iron ore was first discovered on the Marquette Range in Michigan in 1845. The first ore from this range came from the old Jackson mine in Negaunee in 1848. During these early years this property and others on the Marquette produced limited tonnages for transportation to Lower Lakes and for consumption by charcoal furnaces in the area, where a plentiful supply of hardwoods furnished the charcoal for iron smelting. The Marquette and other ranges tributary to Lake Superior did not produce much ore for transportation to Lower Lakes until the locks at Sault Ste. Marie were constructed, but from the time the first lock at the "Soo" was completed in 1855 these ores were transported through the locks to consumer centers in the East. The Marquette Range has a history of continuous production from 1848 to the present day.

THE purpose of this paper is to present data obtained from an investi-gation conducted on the grindability of coal by the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard ball-mill method. This investiga-tion has been conducted over a period of a year, during which time several hundred tests were run on a wide selection of different coals coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The data herewith presented tend to show that the tentative standard ball-mill method might give results that are misleading and that a volume measure might be more indicative of the true grindability 'of materials of varying specific gravity. A means whereby the time element might be reduced has been studied and other phases of this work such as preparation of samples, mechanical screening, reporting results and duplicating tests have been investigated. It is hoped that all criticism offered in this paper will be taken as constructive, with the purpose in mind of perfecting the method now tentative to show the true conditions and of making optional the manner in which certain parts of the test might be conducted to meet diversified laboratory conditions.

The data presented indicate that the critical shear stress and strain-hardening Thedatapresentedrate of a zinc monocrystal depend on the orientation of its slip direction with respect to its external boundaries. The tendency of a crystal to form deformation bands also depends on its shape. THE plastic behavior of pairs of zinc monocrystals in which both members of the respective pairs had the same orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis, but each had different orientations with respect to their rectangular external shapes, were compared in this investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to see what influence the shape or surface of a zinc crystal has on its mechanical properties. In a previous investigation of triangular zinc monocrystals,1 anomalous axial twisting was observed which seemed to be related to the triangular shape of the crystals. Wolff,' in 400°C tensile tests of rectangular rock-salt crystals bounded by cubic cleavage planes, found that, of the four equivalent slip systems, the two with the "shorter" slip directions yielded and produced slip lines at lower stresses than the other two. This observation and the work of Dommerich³ as formulated by Smekal4 as a "new slip condition" for rock-salt: "among two or more slip systems permitted by the shear stress law, with reference to the formation of visible slip lines by large individual glides, that slip system is preferred which has the shortest effective slip direction." More recently, Wu and Smoluchowski5 reported essentially the same effect for ribbon-like (20x2x0.2 mm) aluminum crystals at room temperature. Experimental Chemically pure zinc (99.999 pct Zn), purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., was the raw material. Glass envelopes, containing graphite molds and zinc, were evacuated while hot enough to outgas the graphite but not melt the zinc. At a vacuum of about 0.2 micron the envelopes were sealed off and then lowered through a furnace at 1 in. per hr so as to melt and resolidify the zinc and produce mono-crystals. One-half of one of the molds is shown in Fig. la. Each mold consisted of four pieces from a cylindrical graphite rod that was split longitudinally and transversely at its midpoints. Rectangular milled grooves 0.050 in. deep and % in. wide formed the mold cavity when the split halves were assembled with twisted wires. Fig. lb shows the specimen shape obtained when the top and bottom mold-halves were rotated 90" with respect to each other. Good fits prevented leakage and excess zinc was necessary to provide enough liquid head to fill the mold completely. In removing soft crystals from the molds it was impossible to avoid small amounts of bending. However, manipulations were carried out whenever possible with the crystals protected by grooved brass blocks. All specimens were annealed prior to testing. From the top and bottom sections of each crystal, X-ray specimens and tensile specimens 7 to 8 cm long were sawed. The tensile specimens were annealed inside evacuated tubes for 1 hr at 375°C. Next the crystals were cleaned and polished by 2-min dips in a solution of 22 pct chromic acid, 74 pct water, 2.5 pct sulphuric acid, and 1.5 pct glacial acetic acid.' Cleaning was followed by a 10-sec dip in a 10 pct caustic solution, then washed in water and alcohol, and dried. This treatment results in a bright surface covered by an invisible oxide film. The testing grips were a slotted type with set screws and were supported in a V-block during the mounting operations in order to avoid bending the crystals. A schematic diagram of the recording tensile-testing machine is shown in Fig. 2. The machine has been described elsewhere.' The head speed was 0.3 mm per sec for all tests. The crystal orientations were determined by the Greninger X-ray back-reflection method with an estimated accuracy of 1. Description of Crystal Geometry A schematic picture of a rectangular zinc mono-crystal is shown in Fig. 3. ABD designates the front edge of a basal plane (0001) of the crystal, the only active slip plane for zinc at room temperature. Fractional replication of factorial design, a general method for planning experimentation and for analysis of data obtained, is described as applied to a flotation investigation. This method leads to determination of optimum process conditions with minimum experimental effort. Its advantages over simple factorial design are demonstrated. A METHOD for planning experimentation and for analyzing the data secured will be demonstrated. This method, termed fractional replication of factorial design, employs a relatively small number of individual experiments to determine which of a large number of process variables are controlling, to determine which combination of levels of these variables is most likely to produce optimum results, and also to predict what results will be obtained with a particular combination of conditions not already tested. Although the general method is not new, having been developed by Finney in 1945,' the extent to which it can improve the effectiveness of applied research generally has not been recognized by metallurgists. The fractional replication procedure is particularly useful in flotation experimentation and an example from such an investigation will be used in the paper. However, it has equal value in any investigation in which similar experimental difficulties are encountered. In developing a flotation process for a particular mineral separation, the investigator is inevitably confronted with the following difficulties: 1—There are a large number of potentially important process variables. 2—Results of individual experiments are not highly reproducible, due in part to the difficulty in precisely controlling all the variables. 3—Considerable effort is expended in conducting individual experiments. 4—There are practical limits on the number of individual experiments which can be made. In situations of just such a type, modern statistical methods of planning experimentation and analyzing data have their greatest value. Applications of one such technique, called factorial design, to problems of this type have been described by Dorenfeld and others.'-' The simple factorial design is an efficient procedure when the investigator hopes to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects and interrelationships of a small number of variables over a limited range. In applied research, this is seldom the main objective. Rather, the investigator usually wishes to determine which of the many potentially important variables are in fact controlling, which levels of the controlling variables will provide opti- mum metallurgical results, and what these results will be at optimum conditions. Interest in detailed trends is limited to the controlling variables and to levels in the region of optimum conditions. Simple factorial design has serious deficiencies for such objectives and is not the most efficient method of experimental design. Deficiencies of Factorial Design In a simple factorial design, an experiment must be made at every possible combination of each level of every variable, once these have been chosen and the levels of each to be included have been decided upon. As the number of variables or levels of each increases, the experimental program quickly reaches prohibitive size. For example, an investigation of only four variables, each at four levels, requires 256 individual experiments. Often upon completion of such an extensive program, it is found that one or more of the variables has metallurgically unimportant effects or that a poor estimate has been made as to the appropriate range of levels to be investigated. The result is that only a small proportion of the data obtained falls in the range of real metallurgical interest. Indeed, it frequently can be anticipated that certain combinations of levels of variables will not produce results of interest, but they still must be included so that the essential balance, or orthogonality, of the design will be retained. It may be true that factorial design will provide the greatest amount of information from a given number of experiments, but it does not necessarily follow that it will lead to the desired information with a minimum number of experiments. Much of the information provided may be of little value. Advantages of Fractional Replication The disadvantages of simple factorial design are overcome to a great extent by a modification known as fractional replication. This is a technique for sampling systematically the potential data of a full factorial experiment, that is, the data which would have been obtained if the complete factorially designed program had been completed. Only a fraction of the total array of experiments is made, but the experiments are chosen in such a way that the important advantages of factorial design and the accompanying analysis of variance are retained. The data obtained from the first group of experiments are used to determine which of several variables are controlling and which levels of these variables are most likely to produce the desired result. INTEREST in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. PLANT AT BUNKER HILL The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a I ¼ in. screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4 ½ -mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen undersize, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass ½ in. and joins the undersize in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). [ ] More complete descriptions of the H. PREPARATION OF MEDIUM AT BUNKER HILL New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. A small portion of the current mill flotation concentrate is diverted from the lead cleaner cells to a I-in. vertical sand pump and pumped to a two-cell 36-in. Agitair flotation machine, where NaCn and ZnSO4 are added and the grade of concentrate is improved as shown in Table 2. Tailing from this operation is returned by gravity

Mine-run ore is received at Vitro in gondola cars and fed directly to a Cedar Rapids impact crusher. Following screening, the undersize travels through a recently installed three-stage sampling plant where successive cuts are executed by conventional Geary-Jennings type cutters to produce a final sample of 1 lb per ton of raw ore fed. Crushed ore is transported to one of three storage silos or to stockpile, depending upon grade and type of amen- ability. This permits the blending of a mill feed with some degree of consistency. Final grinding is accomplished in one of two closed circuit ball mill-classifier systems allowing simultaneous processing of two basic types of ores. High acid consumers may be leached separately in the required environment. Part of the free acid remaining can then be utilized by an ore stream entering later whose component ores require much less free acid for leaching.
