A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

A New Ingersoll-Rand Turbo Blower The Ingersoll-Rand Co. has added to its Turbo Compressors and Blowers a low-pressure machine t o handle volumes from 3,000 to 35,000 cu. ft. per minute at from 1-2 ½ lb. These are particularly adapted to such service as foundry cupola blowing, atomizing oil for oil burners, supplying blast to heating and annealing furnaces of various kinds, blowing air for water-gas generators, pneumatic conveying and ventilating. They are of the single stage, double flow type and are furnished either electric motor, steam turbine or water wheel driven.

The study described in this paper is first centered on the determination of the physical properties (gravimetric, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic) o f metamorphosed iron ores of the Carol Lake-Labrador City District. Different geophysical surveys available in the Carol Lake-Wabush area were interpreted quantitatively and the dimensions, attitude, and tonnage of the ore bodies investigated were determined. A geophysical-statistical study was undertaken which permitted the determination of the grade of iron, magnetite, and, subsequently, specularite in the ore bodies. A discussion of the theory and logical progression of the study and the application of the results to actual geophysical data is presented. The conclusions, which are of real significance from the economic standpoint, may be predicted from the data obtained from geophysical surveys before any diamond drilling is undertaken. An integrated interpretation of this type is useful in planning future exploration work and selecting the most favorable geological structures. It also serves as a guide to minimize and determine tonnage drilling patterns. The general conclusion that a restricted range of residual gravity and magnetic anomalies are a key to exploration is valid. Indeed large depths to the top of deposits are absent since all the ore bodies are overturned synclinal structures with tops located close to the surface. Certain irregular geometries do occur but they are not common and the alignment of the iron ore bodies is sub parallel so that magnetic anomalies are evenly reduced in the earth's magnetic field vector.

Structural similarities between the E, X, and iron carbides are illustrated. Experimental evidence regarding phase transformations occurring during ternpering reactions in finely divided carbides, thin-film carbides, and carbides which occur in steels is considered and possible mechanisms for the E — x and x — 9 transformations proposed. HOFER1 has shown that within the appropriate temperature ranges carbon monoxide will react with finely divided a iron to form either iron carbide or x iron carbide. He has shown that at an elevated temperature the E iron carbide will transform to the x iron carbide (Hagg carbide) which, upon further elevation of temperature, will transform to 9 iron carbide (cementite). Jack,2,3 using X-ray diffraction methods, has observed that during the tempering reactions occurring in steel the E iron carbide formed in the first stage of tempering passes into two-dimensional platelets of 0 iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. The three-dimensional form of the 0 carbide is formed during the third stage of tempering. Jack suggested2 that the two-dimensional platelets of 0 carbide could be related to the faulted x iron carbide. Okada and Arata4 investigated a Swedish steel containing 1.05 wt pct C and approximately 1.0 wt pct Mn using permeability measurements at low field strength. A Curie point of 360°C was observed in the quenched steel, which indicated the presence of E iron carbide. On tempering at 400°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 230°C, indicating the presence of x iron carbide, and on tempering at 700°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 190°C which was assigned to 0 iron carbide. The carbides were extracted electro-lytically and the use of X-ray diffraction techniques4r5 indicated the carbide with a Curie point of 230°C to be x iron carbide. The Curie points of the carbides are 10 to 22°C lower than the accepted values which is probably due to the presence of manganese in the carbides, since it has often been observed (e.g., Ref, 6) that a partial substitution of manganese for iron in cementite will lower the Curie point of this carbide. Hofer' summarizes additional evidence of the tempering reactions in steel in which E iron carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, transforms to x iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. During the third stage of tempering, the x carbide disappears as the 0 carbide is formed. By carburizing thin iron films in a CO gas stream, ~a~akura' has been able to produce the E, X, and 0 iron carbides. He found that below 250°C the E iron carbide was formed; between 250" and 350°C the x iron carbide was formed and above 350°C the 0 iron carbide was formed. He has shown that the E iron carbide transforms to form x iron carbide at 380" to 400°C and that the x ir°n carbide transforms to form the 0 iron carbide at approximately 550" C; both of these phase transformations are irreversible. Hofer' presents a review of evidence to show that the sequence of reactions occurring during tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide formed by the direct carburization of finely divided a iron is the same as the sequence of reactions which occur during the tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide in steel during the first stage of tempering. It is evident from Nagakura's work that identical tempering reactions are found in thin films of iron which have been carburized to form iron carbide. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the structural similarities between the E, X, and 0 carbides and to suggest a possible mechanism by which regions of the E carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, may transform to the x carbide during the second stage of tempering. For the finely divided or thin film carbides a mechanism will be proposed for the transformation of the x carbide to the 0 carbide during the third stage of tempering, although it will be suggested that there is evidence that such a transformation may not occur in steels. STRUCTURAL DATA OF THE E, X, AND 0 IRON CARBIDES € Iron Carbide. It is evident from X-ray diffractions and electron diffraction', investigations that the metal atoms in the E iron carbide form an hcp structure with lattice constants ah = 2.752A, ch = 4.3534, using electron diffraction, reports the lattice paramet$rs of the superlattice cell to be a = 4.767A, c = 4.354, c/a = 0.9134. He finds that the carbon atoms occupy the octahedral voids in the metal atom structure so as to form a hexagonal stacking sequence with its basal plane parallel to that of the metal atoms. Considerable long-range disorder occurs in the positioning of the carbon atoms, however, which is in agreement with the possible range of composition Fe2C-Fe3C discussed by Hofer.' Barton and ale" have made X-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of E iron carbide extracted from a catalyst in an organic process. Although there were few reflections recorded on the obtained X-ray powder diffraction pattern, they have proposed that the structure could belong to one of the three possible space groups p3m1, P63/mmc, or Pbcn if one assumed the composition to be Fe2C. Nagakura, using electron diffraction data, suggests a space group of P 6322 for a specimen of c iron carbide of apparent composition Fez.&. x Iron Carbide. If we assume that testing of the model started at time t1, that time t2 was the instant at which the elastic limit of the material was passed at the points of the maximum stress, and that at time t3 the failure of the model was completed as shown in the typical photograph (Fig. I), then actually the photograph shows the final results of what took place between time t2 and t3. By the principle of similitude all conclusions drawn from the behavior of the model were applicable and valid for actual mine roofs up to the time t2 after time t2 motions and friction came into play during the destruction of the model. The events between t2 and t3 and the photograph itself are not representative of the events expected in an actual mine roof unless corrections imposed by the principle of similitude are made. It can therefore be stated that all conclusions and observations of the author from the photographs are applicable only to his small-scale experiments and not to actual mine roofs. Without investigation of the true stresses or the combined maximum stress induced in the beds it has been assumed by the author that failure occurred solely due to bending stress caused by loading of the beds. (The author states that D was taken to be the theoretical strain given by elementary beam theory.) Fig. 1 shows that the beds were clamped together. This clamping was necessary to prevent slipping of the beds due to the horizontal shear. However, this clamping caused an uncontrolled and undertermined com-pressive stress S at the end of the beds, and this com-pressive stress caused a true tensile stress ?S (? PoiS-son ratio). This true tensile stress combined with the tensile stress produced at the end of the beds due to loading (fixed beam uniformly loaded), and the horizontal shear which is maximum at the end appears to be the most probable maximum stress produced in the beds. It is therefore evident that the author in performing this experiment has introduced stresses in the model not existing or dissimilar to actual mine roofs, and therefore his conclusions may be applicable to his small-scale experiments but inapplicable to actual mine roofs. Louis A. Panek (author's reply)—The discusser's difficulty is related to mechanics of materials rather than similitude. The effect of time did not enter into the tests in any way, being simply excluded from consideration in this study, because all quantitative results entering into the design equations are based on measured (between time t1 and time t2) bending strains that are well below the breaking strain (i.e., in the elastic range) for the model material. Time does not become a significant factor until the rock stress reaches 80 to 90 pct of the breaking stress." The objective of this investigation was not to predict that bolted roof will fail after time t, but was instead to develop a safe roof, that is, roof in which the bending strain is much less than (say less than 50 pct of) the breaking strain. The models tested to failure had no direct bearing on the design equations. Although for some rocks time may influence the magnitude of stress or strain at which fracture occurs, breaking stress or breaking strain values were not employed for any purpose in this investigation. Tests to failure were made only to obtain additional evidence regarding the behavior of the bolted laminae' as evinced by the locations of the cracks. As stated in the last paragraph of the paper, if one wishes to predict the time or stress conditions for which the roof will fail, additional information is required. The reason for clamping the laminae is to make them behave liked clamped beams, which closely approximate the clamped-plate condition of the actual mine roof beds (Ref. 5, p. 1; Ref. 6). The writer has previously demonstrated that the bending stresses induced by centrifugal loading in a clamped model beam are in agreement with those predicted by theory;' hence clamping has no significant effect on the bending ,trains measured during a test. Moreover, actual ,in, roof beds are likewise subject to a clamping effect due to weight of superincumbent strata carried by the pillars or ribs on each side of the opening. It is emphasized that this study was restricted to evaluating only the reinforcing effect produced by the bolts. Procedures employed in the experiments and in the data analysis were such as to deliberately exclude the effects of other factors. The objections offered are therefore invalid,

Before discussing the application of capacitance for the measurement of moisture content in a moving stream of coal it might be well to first give a brief description of the process and then show how it can be applied to the coal industry. A capacitor may be described as a device having two conductors separated by an insulator, the conductors hereafter being designated as a test cell or test plates and the insulator as the dielectric. Capacitance, therefore, is a measure of the ability of a capacitor to store an electrical charge. Two basic factors that affect capacitance are the dimensions of the capacitor and the dielectric constant of the insulator. Capacitor dimensions which affect its capacity are the area A of the conductive surface, and the distance d between plates. Capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between plates and directly proportional to area A, so if capacitance is indicated as C and the dielectric constant as K the equation for capacitance would be C = AK/d. The dielectric constant can be described as the ratio of the actual capacitance of any given material to that of a vacuum, which is unity. In industrial applications the area of the plates remains constant as also does the distance between them, leaving the dielectric constant as the only variable to affect the capacitance measurement. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an r-f excited capacitance bridge in which a test cell is part of the circuit. This bridge consists of four capacitors in two pairs connected across an a-c voltage source. In one side of the circuit the two capacitors are fixed but in the other side they are variable, one being the rebalance capacitor operated by the servo motor and the other the test plates between which the dielectric passes. Capacity of the plates is a function of the dielectric constant of the material between them and is measured at radio frequency. Within the recording instrument is an r-f oscillator and a 60 c ps modulator. The radio frequency signal is generated by the oscillator, modulated by a 60 cps wave, and sent to the bridge. Therefore the signal entering the capacitive bridge is a radio frequency carrier with a 60 cycle envelope, If the bridge is in balance as the signal enters there would be no voltage drop and so no output by the detector. As long as the dielectric constant remains the same the bridge will stay in balance. However, any change in the dielectric constant, which in this case would be a change in moisture content, would affect the bridge. Higher moisture increases the capacity of the test cell which causes less voltage to develop across it causing imbalance of the bridge. This in turn causes a radio frequency signal to appear at the detector. Output from the detector is a 60 cycle ripple which is in proportion to the imbalance of the circuit. A 60 cycle amplifier boosts the detector signal to enough power to drive the servo motor which positions the recording pen and also rotates the variable capacitor, to which it is mechanically connected, to bring the bridge back in balance. An increase in moisture causes the servo motor to rotate in one direction, but a decrease causes imbalance in the opposite direction, and thus rotates the motor in that direction. This brings the bridge back in balance and stops the motor. The bridge shown in Figure 1 has been modified so as to provide a wide range of adjustments. Coarse and fine span adjustments located in the recording instrument are set to govern the amount of pen movement for a given change in capacitance. BLEACHING clays have been used extensively in the oil-refining industries for a number of years. Their use in water purification is relatively recent and less extensive. They are frequently classified as (1) those naturally active and (2) those active after artificial activation with acid. Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the south-eastern section of the United States. Bentonitic clays are usually classed as activable and are prevalent in the southwestern section of the United States.1 Bleaching clays vary considerably in chemical and physical properties throughout the country, or even in different parts of one deposit (Table 1). Low Zinc Prices Close Alcoa Mine Alcoa Mining Co., announced that it will suspend operations at its Hutson mine, near Salem, Ky., because of low zinc prices, January 15. The Aluminum Co. of America subsidiary announced that the low market has made zinc mining un- profitable. About 70 men were employed at the mine, with a production of about 5000 tons of zinc annually. Alcoa said the shutdown would not affect other company operations, with most of the men at Hutson absorbed in the mining firm's fluorspar operations in the same area.

In much of the work reported in the literature on long cores. true connate water value, probably have not been obtained because of insufficient flow of 011 to attain equilibrium. A -.satisfactory method for establishing connate water in long cores has been developed in which oil flow is maintained until no additiona1 water is displaced. INTRODUCTION Long cores have been used by sev-erals investigators in an effort to evaluate the efficiency of oil recovery for various producing schemes. The effects of many variables such as rate of displacement. pressure drop, volume of displacing medium, gas-oil ratio, inter-facial tension, and others have been investigated, and the merits of gas drive have been compared with water drive. In the older experiments no connate water was used. but in the more recent stndies the philosophy of the experiment calls for a core containing oil and connate water (irreducible water) as the starting point of the experiment. The method generally used to establish this condition in long cores involves dynamic' displacement wherein one or more phases are forced through the core. flow being maintained at a constant rate or at a constant pressure until a steady state is reached wherein there is no change of saturation with time. It is one purpose of this paper to point out that in much of the work reported in the literature true connate water values probably have not been obtained. The reason for this failure is pointed out. and a method for obtaining more reliable connate water values on long cores is presented. It is impossible at this time to completely evaluate the effect on the conclusions in the earlier papers resulting from the failure to obtain true connate water in the long cores, but some data are presented which indicate that serious errors may he present in many cases. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Cores cut front outcrop sandstones (Strawn. Torpedo, and Elgin sandstones) with permeabilities of the order of 300 md were used. The major experiments were made with a core 18-in. long and 2-in. in diameter. Cores of the same diameter but only 12-in. long were used in a few tests? and in some work a core I-in. in diameter and 11-in. long was used. These materials were all somewhat bentonitic. 'To reduce the effect of such constituents, one of the cores (Torpedo No. 10) on which the most work was performed was acid extracted at the start of the experiment. Brine containing 50,000 ppm chloride and naphtha (Stoddard's Solvent) were used as the water and oil phases, respectively. The core was mounted in a rubber sleeve which forms the inner lining of a brass cylinder. In this arrangement2 the rubber sleeve is forced against the core by applying pressure to water in the annular space between the rubber sleeve and the brass cylinder wall. The core is therefore sealed in rubber so that all fluids introduced at the input end of the core flow through the core. With this equipment the core may be easily removed for inspection and analysis. Also, other cores may be introduced for study with no extra time for preparation such as is required when plastic mounting is used. When pressure or conductivity measurements are desired at intermediate points along tile length of the core, the brass cylinder comprising the outer jacket of the core holder is cut into section, of the desired length. Each section is then made up as an individual unit with its own rubber sleeve (see Fig. 1). The individual units are then butted up against a ring of plastic or other insulating material which carries an electrical contact for resistivity measurements and an opening which can be used for the measurements of fluid pressures. The individual units are forced tightly against the plastic ring separators and held in place with several tie rods. Inlet and outlet end butts of the same diameter as the core and several inches in length are provided to control the introduction and withdrawal of fluids and to complete the arrangement for sealing the core within the rubber sleeve. Fluid flow is maintained either by applying pressure to the liquid confined in a reservoir or by the use of a gear pump. The latter is preferable where continuous flow at a moderate rate over a long time interval is desired since a small volume of liquid can be readily recirculated using filters to prevent plugging of the core. Ge-Si N-N heterodiodes hare been built recently which show promise as high-speed logic devices. Low-resistivity germanium is deposited on silicon substrates held at temperatures above the germanium melting point and an alloyed heterojunction formed. The diodes are fabricated from this material using conventional mesa techniques. Over-all device qualify has been greatly improved by the use of epitaxial silicon substrates, that is, a subsirale consisting of a film of thin, high -resistivity silicon on a thicker Piece of low-resistirily silicon crystal. A semimpirical device design equation has been devised which predicts switching performance fairly well within the range of resistivitics and geometries employed. Switching times 01 0.9 ns and PIV 's of —20 v are typical of the better 10-ma diodes. Switching times as low as 0.5 ns have been observed for 10-ma diodes and as low as 2.8 ns for 200-ma diodes. With further development it should be possible to improve switching speed by a factor of four. IN our laboratory, Ge-Si heterodiodes have been built recently which show promise as high-speed logic devices. The diodes have been built using a process reported in some detail in an earlier publication.' The process in short involves alloying a thin film of low-resistivity germanium into a silicon substrate. the germanium having been transported and deposited by the well-known Theuerer halide reduction process.2 This process contrasts with that reported earlier by Oldham who used an essentially conventional direct epitaxial deposition technique.3 Oldham's process, unlike ours, requires cleavage of the silicon sample inside the reactor furnace the instant prior to deposition. Our process has the advantage of yielding large-area macro-scopically plane heterojunctions. Heterodiodes in general have several interesting properties. Without attempting to summarize the theory of heterojunctions.4 two of these properties which have direct relevance should be mentioned. First, N-.V and P-P heterojunction diodes rectify alternating current. Provided that either the band gap or the electron affinity of the two materials is different (which in general is the case), electronic barriers will exist in the junction band structure. When the device is sufficiently forward-biased, the barriers shift so as to permit current flow, and when it is reverse-biased. the barriers block current flow. Second, for N-N and P-P heterodiodes. the foward-conduction process involves majority carriers only. Consequently. when such a device is turned off. there is no minority-carrier storage and hence the diodes switch on and off quite rapidly. As we have reported earlier. N-P and N-N Ge-Si heterodiodes have been built in this laboratory. As one would predict from theory, the N-P heterodiodes were rather slow in turning off while the N-N's were quite fast. Similarly, the turn-off time of the N-P's increased rapidly with forward current while that of the N-N's was independent of forward current. Both N-N's and N-P's were moderately photosensitive. Photocurrents resulting from normal room illumination were as high as 1 µa at 1 v for small-area devices. The most disappointing parameter of the early N-N devices was reverse leakage.' The reverse characteristic was invariably "soft" and leakage at only several volts reverse bias was intolerable. The reverse characteristic was greatly improved by using higher-resistivity silicon substrates. Leakage becomes large at voltages about one third of the avalanche voltage one would expect of a P-N homo-junction formed on silicon of the same resistivity. Thus leakage could be reduced to reasonable limits by using unconventionally high-resistivity silicon. Medium-power diodes formed on 30 ohm-cm substrates leaked typically 15 to 50 µa at 100 v reverse bias. The use of high-resistivity silicon substrate material, however, created a new problem. In order to have an acceptable forward-conductance characteristic. the area of the diodes had to be increased. With this increase in area, the capacitance increased. Switching time for N-N heterodiodes is essentially a linear function of capacitance. Thus when the resistivity was raised. so was the switching time. DURING the past two decades considerable progress has been made in the art of manufacturing heater alloys. The conventional iron-chromium-nickel alloys have been improved by the addition of small quantities of other elements. Up to the present time, to our knowledge, there has not appeared a systematic study of these alloys where the newer tools of investigation have been brought to bear on the problem. It is not yet clear what roles the additional elements play in increasing life time in usage. As a first approximation one might guess that elements such as manganese, silicon, zirconium, calcium and aluminum would aid in the formation of a protective film on the alloy surface, thus retarding the oxidation rate and increasing lifetime. If these additional elements do form protective oxides in the outer surface of the oxide film, it may be possible to identify them by means of reflection electron diffraction. It is also possible that the additional elements may not diffuse to the surface but may remain at the interface between the oxide and the metal. Then, too, the major elements in the alloys undoubtedly form oxides which are stratified on the surface. If the minor elements concentrate in a layer in contact with the substrate where they undergo oxidation and if this oxide film offers resistance to the diffusion of iron, chromium and nickel ions, then the lifetime of the heater element might be expected to increase. It is also possible that preferential reduction in the diffusion rates of the several ions may Occur to such a degree that oxides may form in the body Of the film and On the outer surface which are different from those that would normally form if the additional elements were not present. The use Of transmisson electron diffraction may aid us in jnterpreting these phenomena. UP to the Present time all Of the factors which influence the lifetime of a given heater element are not definitely known. Among these are: (I) The rate of oxidation of the alloy. This may be dependent upon the composition and the physica1 state of the "alloy. (2) The stability of the structure of the coating which forms. Transitions from one structure to another or solid phase reactions resulting in a change of composition may occur. The tendency of the film to adhere to the substrate when heated and cooled successively will be important. (3) The evaporation of various constituents from the alloy such as the remova1 of carbon by Oxygen in a decar-burization reaction. AT the end of September, ' the metal-producing industries were almost prostrate, the production of fuels was largely curtailed, there was a fair degree of activity in general manufacturing, while retail trade was moderately good. Looking at industry on the whole, there was a large percentage of unemployment, the degree of which has increased, progressively, month by month since the beginning of 1921. There is the prospect of much destitution and misery this winter; yet while' in some, quarters, idle workers are already being fed from, commissaries; in other quarters profligacy; in "spending continues, unabated. Amid this confusion in conditions there is;' much that appears paradoxical, but in fact it is not so and indeed everything is running pretty true to form: Such activity in production as there is to be seen is mainly in textiles; - leather goods, foodstuffs, etc., i.e., consumption goods for immediate use. Even in hard times 105,000,000 people must buy a good deal of clothing and food. Besides this there is indispensable repair work and- maintenances. Thus, the good business of the year in white lead for painting. The chief uses for the metals, however, are in the production of capital goods, and except for occasional and special reasons nobody in his senses is capitalizing anything at present prices for labor. Hence several millions of men are idle. The impoverishment of Europe and the exhaustion of her credits adds to this by curtailing our export trade.

Production of petroleum and natural .gas increased in Canada in 1940 over the previous year. Alberta produced more than 97 per cent of the total Canadian production of 8,718,053 bbl. of oil, an increase for this province of nearly 12 per cent, whereas in Ontario and New Brunswick, where the production is relatively small, there was a slight decline. In Alberta the main producing field is Turner Valley, on the eastern edge of the foothills southwest of Calgary, and development continued in this field in 1940 with the completion of 36 wells, all of which obtained production. In the Red Coulce field, close to the International Boundary, near Coutts, no new wells were drilled and the seven producing wells showed a decline of 900 bbl. below the previous year. Also, in the Wainwright field of east central Alberta, four wells, yielding heavy crude oil, produced 4000 bbl. less oil than in 1939, owing possibly rather to discontinuous operation than to actual decline in potential yield. This decline was more than offset by production from a new field 40 miles northeast of Wainwright, at Borradaile, producing oil of 14" to I 5° A.P.1. There was a small increase in production during 1940 from the Del Bonita field, in southern Alberta, where the production is from two wells. The outstanding development of the year was the completion of Standard Oil Princess No. 2 well in the Steveville area, on the Plains 100 miles east of Calgary. This well was completed late in December with an initial flow1 of 520 bbl. of 26.3" A.P,I. oil, and 12,750 M cu. ft. of gas from the upper part of the Mississippian limestone. It has opened up a new field and given a further proof of the potentialities of the Southern Plains. The production of petroleum in Canada is shown in Table I. Since most of the yield comes from Alberta, the production is shown from the various fields in Table 2. The sale value of the petroleum produced in Canada in 1940 exceeded 11.1 million dollars, which is still somewhat less than the value of the natural gas production, shown in Table 3.
