IN times like these, the A. I. M. E. and similar societies have their greatest usefulness. . . . Individuals and companies acting alone in the development of public opinion are merely voices crying in the wilderness. United and organized they make a great force that can and does influence public action. . . . What part, if any, then, shall the A. I. M. E. take in these great stabilization processes of civilization? Shall it help to give direction and force to scientific knowledge which comes within its field of activity or shall it merely develop more of it? . . . Is it the A. I. M. E.'s function to help bring system, order and direction out of this situation so that the world can again have forward economic movement, or should it rest on its oars until other agenciess develop that public understanding and direction so necessary for economic progress? As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petro¬leum Division, they are to discover and promote knowl¬edge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends on the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas.

The phosphate ores mined in middle Tennessee typically consist of granular rock phosphate particles disseminated in a clayey matrix. In the TVA plant near Columbia, Tenn., the phosphate ore is mined, made into a slurry with the addition of a small amount of sodium hydroxide as dispersant, and treated in a hydroseparator to remove minus 10 micron material. The hydro-separator underflow, comprising a rough concentrate, is transported by pipeline to the plant; the hydro-separator overflow, comprising a tailing, is flocculated by addition of calcium sulphate and is discharged to settling ponds at a rate of about 1400 gpm. Sedimentation in the ponds produces a clarified effluent, which may be recycled for use as process water or discharged to surface drainage. This method of tailing treatment is not entirely satisfactory since poor sedimentation characteristics of the tailing result in poor ultimate utilization of pond storage volume.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

The negative pressure developed within a solidifying sphere of pure iron is investigated theoretically assuming an elastic-plastic model. The maximum hydrostatic tension attainable is shown to be an order of magnitude smaller than that required for the homogeneous muclealion of pores in the liquid cove, and four orders of magnilude smaller than that predicted from) a rigid shell model. It is well-known that liquids can withstand large hydrostatic tensile stresses, or negative pressures. The various experimental investigations of the tensile strengths (often called the fracture pressures) of liquids are reviewed by Dean,1 and the theoretical attempts at estimating fracture pressures are critically assessed by wakeshima.2 Using Fisher's3 quation, the fracture pressure of pure liquid iron is about -70,000 atm, which may be too large by as much as a factor of 4, but is certainly correct to within an order of magnitude.' In view of the great importance of the problem of the nucleation of shrinkage cavities in castings it is of interest to determine exactly what tensile stresses can exist in the residual liquid in a solidifying casting; it has often been assumed that, because of the very low strengths of solid metals near their melting points, no interior stresses are developed at all. Nussey4 has determined theoretically the pressure in the liquid core of a solidifying metal sphere assuming that the solidified shell does not deform (i .e., is perfectly rigid), so that because of the contraction accompanying solidification (a) (about 3 pct for most metals) the progressive deposition of solid onto the inner surface of the shell causes the remaining liquid to be expanded to make up this difference in volume. This leads to a relation between the pressure P in the liquid, the initial pressure, PO, the bulk modulus of the liquid, K, and the inner and outer radii of the solid shell, o and b, respectively:

FOR the benefit of those readers who may not be in close touch with present practices in the geophysical prospecting for ore, brief reference will fiat be made to the advantages and shortcomings of the methods to be discussed. Magnetic and electric methods are generally accepted as the most useful for ore prospecting. By magnetic methods, magnetic intensities that are not normal may be recorded and outlined. From these can he located concentrations of such highly magnetic minerals as magnetite or pyrrhotite, which sometimes occur in such large masses that they are of economic value in themselves. More often. however, these magnetic min¬erals are associated with others, such as copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, which, if existing in sufficient concentration and quantity, may constitute valuable ore bodies. It is therefore only when pyrrhotite and magnetite are present in these bodies that the magnetic method can be used to indicate their presence.

In 1856 Henry Darcy described in an appendix to his book, Les Fontaines Publiques de la Ville de Dijon, a series of experiments on the downward flow of water through filter sands, whereby it was established that the rate of flow is given by the equation: q= - K(h2- h2)/I1 in which q is the volume of water crossing unit area in unit time, I is the thickness of the sand, h1 and h2 the heights above a reference level of the water in manometers terminated above and below the sand, respectively, and K a factor of proportionality. This relationship, appropriately, soon became known as Darcy's law. Subsequently many separate attempts have been made to give Darcy's empirical expression a more general physical fornzulation, with the result that .so many mutually inconsistent expressions of what is purported to he Darcy's law have appeared in published literature that sight has often been lost of Darcy's own work and of its significance. In the present paper, therefore, it shall be our purpose to reinform ourselves upon what Darcy himself did, and then to determine the meaning of his results when expressed explicitly in terms of the pertinent physical variables involved. This will be done first by the empirical method used by Darcy himself, and then by direct derivation from the Navier-Stokes equation of motion of viscous fluids. We find in this manner that: q = (N4(p/p)[g - (l/p) gradPI = WE, is a physical expression for Darcy's law, which is valid for liquids generally, and for gases at pressures higher than about 20 atmospheres. Here N is a shape factor and d a characteristic length of the pore structure of the solid, p and IL are the density and viscosity of the fluid, a = (Nd2)(pip) is the volume conductivity of the system, and E = [g - (l/p) grad p] is the impelling force per unit mass acting upon the fluid. It is found also that Darcy's law is valid only for flow velocities such that the inertial forces are negligible as compared with those arising from viscosity. In general, three-dimensional space there exist two superposed physical fields: a field of force of charucteristic vector E, and a field of flow of vector q. The force field is more general than the flow field since it has values in all space capable of being occupied by the fluid. The effect of calcium, magnesium, iron (both ferrous and ferric) and aluminum ions, which are commonly encountered in a typical beryl ore, was studied in the flotation of pure beryl, soda-feldspar and quartz. The vacuumatic flotation technique was employed. With sodium oleate as collector and in the absence of any activator, beryl floated in a pH range of 3 to 7.5, whereas feldspar and quartz did not float at any pH up to 11.5. The pH range of flotation increased in the presence of the ions studied. With calcium and magnesium ions beryl floated from 3 to 11.5 pH and beyond, soda-feldspar floated beyond pH 6 and quartz floated beyond pH 8. Ferrous ion activation was found to be similar to that of calcium and magnesium. Activation by ferric and aluminium ions was found to be complex and the lower and upper critical pH for all the three minerals was around 2 and 10 respectively. These studies indicated the possibility of separation of beryl from feldspar and quartz even in the presence of calcium, magnesium and ferrous ions between pH 4 and 6. Flotation tests on a mixed feed of pure minerals in a 10 g cell revealed that beryl can be selectively floated from feldspar and quartz if ferric ion is reduced to ferrous state or if it is complexed. Beryl occurs mostly in pegmatites, and hence is associated with feldspar, quartz and micas and small amounts of other minerals such as apatite and tourmaline. The separation of beryl from these minerals is difficult because all the silicates accompanying beryl have more or less the same physical properties. Specific gravities of beryl, feldspar and quartz are 2.70, 2.56 and 2.66 respectively. Electrostatic separation has been suggested but no work has been reported. ' The adsorption of sodium tri-decylate tagged with Cl4 on beryl, feldspar and quartz reveal similarity in surface properties. Much work has been reported on the flotation of beryl from ores, either directly or indirectly as a by-product, but little is known about the fundamental aspects of beryl flotation. Kennedy and O'Meara3 laid emphasis on prior cleaning of the mineral surfaces with HF. Mica is removed first by flotation of beryl with oleic acid, around neutral pH. Runke4 introduced calcium hypochlorite conditioning in a final separation stage for activating beryl in a mixed beryl-feldspar concentrate, and after washing to remove the hypochlorite, floated beryl with petroleum sulphonate. The Snedden and Gibbs5 procedure is somewhat similar to that of Kennedy and O'Meara. Emulsified oleic acid is used as collector. Recently Fuerstenau and Bhappu6 studied the flotation of beryl, feldspar and quartz with petroleum sulfonate in the presence of activators and stressed the importance of iron in the flotation of beryl. From the studies conducted in this laboratory, it was found that feldspar and quartz as such do not float with sodium oleate, but in practice selective flotation of beryl from feldspar and quartz in an ore is found to be impossible with sodium oleate as collector. A glance at the chemical analysis of typical beryl ore indicates the presence of several ions like Ca ++, Mg++, Al + + + and Fe+++ in abundance and Ti++++ and Mn++ in traces. Hence, in an attempt to explain the behaviour of feldspar in the beryl flotation, the effect of Ca++, Mg++, Al+++ and Fe+++, which are known as gangue mineral activators7'8 has been investigated. Materials and Methods: Lumps of beryl ore (hand picked) were boiled with 10% sodium hydroxide and washed with distilled water. They were further boiled many times with 10% hydrochloric acid till no positive test for iron was obtained with ammonium thio cyanate. This was followed by thorough flushing with double distilled water. The lumps were crushed in a porcelain mortar and pestle under water. The minus 65 + 100 mesh fraction was used for testing and was always stored under distilled water. Pure feldspar and quartz were similarly prepared and the minus 65 + 100 mesh fractions collected. Inorganic ions tried as activators were ca++, Mg++ , Fe++, Fe ++ and A1 +++ . Calcium nitrate, magnesium chloride, ferrous ammonium sulfate, ferric ammonium sulfate and aluminum nitrate of G.R.E. Merck grade were used. B.D.H. technical grade sodium oleate was used as a collector. The vacuumatic flotation technique developed by Schuhmann and Prakash was used for studying the effect of pH on flotability. 7 The indications given by this work were confirmed by using 10 g miniature cell.'

THE fact that certain types of ore-deposits have attained their present condition through the action of descending surface waters was, perhaps, first clearly pointed out by Posepny.1 The oxidizing effects of such waters were discussed by Penrose,2 and many papers dealing with this phase of the subject have subsequently appeared. That secondary enrichment of sulphide ores, however, might be produced by descending surface waters was not clearly understood until after the copper-bearing veins of the Butte district, Mont., had been carefully studied by the geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey, al¬though De Launay3 had suggested that sulphides might be transported from point to point and re-deposited in the zone above the level of ground-water. As a result of the study of the Butte district, two papers by geologists engaged in the work appeared within a short interval. The first by Weed,4 dealing with the enrichment of veins by later metallic sulphides: and the second by Ernmons,5 treating of the secondary enrichment of ore-deposits in general. In the latter paper it was pointed out that a typical vein of sulphide ores which has been subjected to the action of descending surface waters exhibits four zones,-an upper or surface zone, in which the changes have been mainly of removal, the products being typically oxides; a second zone of oxide enrichment, in which the less soluble metals brought from above have been precipitated as carbonates or oxides; a third zone of sulphide enrichment,

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Following his return to the United States and a brief interlude as assistant to the president of the National Steel and Wire Company, he had resumed his mining career, first as timekeeper, then as

INCREASED metal consumption throughout the world in the past three years has brought greater activity in the concentrators and mills that treat the ores.' Comparatively low prices have made greater economies necessary, with a continuing search for more efficient flow sheets, equipment, processes, and reagents. Comminution GRINDING has long been too ex- pensive and even any small increment of saving has been eagerly sought. Although not recently new the use of rod mills to cover the gap between intermediate crushing and coarse grinding has made further headway. They eliminate dusting and the closed- circuit operation of fine crushers, either roll or Symons cone, and the rod-mill product is suitable for secondary mills which can be operated with smaller balls and iron liners instead of coarse balls and steel liners. The newer practice is radically different from the older application of rod mills where they at- tempted to use them instead of ball mills for fine grinders. For that purpose they were not well adapted, as they do not have sufficient grinding surface available per cubic foot of mill volume.

The effect of grain size and specimen dimensions on the occurrence and magnitude of a yield point drop in pure iron has been examined. The tests were done at room temperature. The results indicate that gain size is the critical factor determining whether a yield drop occurs. The specimen diameter:gain size ratio does not influence the magnitude of the yield drop for the range of gain size and specimen diameters investigated. HUTCHINSON,' petchY2 and worthington3 have investigated the grain size dependence of the upper yield stress (uUYP) and the yield point drop, ouyp - aLYP, in Armco iron, mild steel, and Si-Fe, respectively. These authors used center-annealed wires to avoid stress concentration from specimen shoulders and to ensure uniformity of the applied stress. Coarsegrained specimens show no yield point drop; the yield point drop then increases as d-'I2 increases (where d is the grain diameter). These results can be understood in terms of Petch's analysis2 in which the magnitude of amp depends on the strain rate in the (limited) number of grains deforming plastically at the upper yield point. If N grains per unit volume are undergoing plastic deformation, the strain rate in the deforming grains is l/Nd3 times higher at the upper yield stress than when the whole specimen deforms homogeneously. If N is constant and independent of grain size at uUyp, then all the grains are deforming when ~d~ = 1, so there is no yield point drop. At finer grain sizes, the yield point drop is given by: where AU, is the friction stress increase corresponding to a tenfold strain rate increase. Christ, Smith, and Burton studied the upper yield point in 0.050-in.-diam wire specimens prepared from zone-refined iron. Each end of the 2; -in. specimens was soldered to a & -in. diam steel ball and the load applied through the two balls. There was a yield point drop in specimens with grain diameters less than 0.1 mm; no drop was observed in specimens of grain diameter greater than 0.1 mm that were free from veining substructure, but specimens of grain diameter 0.129 mm, annealed in the y range, showed an upper yield point. and this was associated with the presence of a veining substructure in these specimens. Christ et al. suggested the upper yield point occurs when more than a specific number of grains fill the specimen cross section so a multiplicity of slip is required to initiate plastic deformation. Table I summarizes the published data on the grain size at which the yield drop disappears. On the basis of this data the ratio of specimen diameter:grain diameter = 5 to 27 appears to be the critical value for the occurrence of a yield point drop. Thus, petch2 interprets the appearance and magnitude of the yield point drop in terms of the limited number of grains deforming plastically at uuyp, whereas Christ et a1. consider that the occurrence of the yield drop depends on the ratio specimen diame-ter:grain diameter. The published data cover a wide variety of materials so some variation between the results is to be expected, but the size range covered in the data of Table I is rather limited. Anthracite was first mined in the Wyoming Valley and sold as an article of commerce in 1808. As some preparation has always been necessary to make it ready to burn, the preparation of anthracite must date back over a hundred years. Two vital factors have determined to a large extent the degree and the method of anthracite preparation. These are, first, the character of the beds worked and the methods by which they are mined and, second, the equipment used and practices followed in the burning of the coal. It is not the intention here to go deeply into these phases of preparation as a paper of no mean length could be prepared on the history of either. Rather, the intention here is to point out the main considerations and to show the influence they have exerted on the preparation of anthracitc. Mining Methods and Their Relation to Preparation In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the coal beds were virgin with the possible exception of some outcroppings that had been worked, to a slight extent, by the Indians. It is known that the American aborigines had a, knowledge of the use of this fuel, because when the Wyoming Valley was purchased from them, in 1754, they mentioned the fact that, by selling the land, they would lose their coal. Real mining of anthracite began about 1808 when Judge Jesse Fell, of Wilkes-Barre, discovered that the "common stone coal of the valley" could be burned in an open grate. For some years thereafter mining was conducted near the surface. The working p1aces were driven narrow; only the best of the coal was selected and the remainder was left in the ground. Only the lumps could be used, as no market existed for other sizes. As time passed, however, it became necessary either to go farther into the ground or to widen the working places. (written discussion ?).-Firebricks intended for, the same purpose, but supplied by different manufacturers, may be of entirely different clays, contain different proportions of flint, calcined and plastic clays; the particles may vary widely in size; the water used to make the brick will vary; the pressure in molding will vary, depend-ing on whether the brick is hand made or power pressed; and the degree of burning in the same kiln will differ. These variables affect the melting point and the strength of the brick when heated. An important property, of a firebrick is its ability to resist heat and, at the same time, weight or load without serious deformation. The soft-ening point and the melting point of a firebrick may be several hundred degrees apart, and two bricks may show considerable difference in their softening points, but the melting points may be approximately the same. Bricks are not usually employed at temperatures close to their melting points. If they must withstand very high temperatures, the firebrick is discarded and a brick of more refractory material is used. Under these conditions' it is doubtful whether the determination of the melting point of a brick has much practical value. If the determination of the melting point is necessary, the test should he made on a portion of the original brick and not on a specially prepared sample. A small triangular pyramid with a base about 1 1/2 in. and 3 in. high can be sawed from the corner of the brick with a thin-bladed car-borundum wheel, without injuring or destroying the size of particles, the bond, or degree of burning of the original brick. This specimen can then he compared with standard Seger cones or tested by any other method desired.

This study is concerned with the kinetics of selective oxidation of chromium in a commercial Fe-Cr-Ni alloy. Selective oxidation of chromium in this alloy, by use of a low oxygen-potential atmosphere, leads to the formation of a compact, protective layer of Cr2O3. This layer serves to protect this alloy from gross scaling when it is subsequently exposed to severe oxidizing conditions at high temperature. The interaction of low oxygen-potential atmospheres close to equilibrium with Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys has been studied by others."' These studies werk concerned with the surface-structure variations under slightly oxidizing conditions. NO detailed study was made of the oxide scale formation kinetics, however. The alloy samples were cut from 0.012-in.-thick sheet, with an apparent surface area of 7.1 sq cm. These sheet samples were abraded through 4/0 metallographic paper, and washed in alcohol and acetone. The analysis of the sheet alloy is (in weight percent): 42 pct Ni, 5.5 pct Cr, 0.09 pct C, 0.18 pct Al, 0.36 pct Si, 0.26 pct Mn, balance Fe. The weight gain vs time data were obtained with a 2-g capacity fused-silica spring—cathetometer system. The spring deflection was optically magnified ten times before being read by the cathetometer. A sensitivity of about 0.01 mg was attainable. The spring was enclosed in a water jacket maintained at 60°C to minimize the effect of temperature changes. The sample was suspended from the spring with a fused-silica hangdown and was positioned in the thermal center of a mullite furnace tube. Sample temperature was read with the aid of a thermocouple placed outside the mullite tube and an inside vs outside temperature calibration. Temperature change during the course of a run was ±0.25°C, with a temperature gradient of less than l.O°C over the length of the sample. Total temperature uncertainty was no more than ±3.0°C. Alignment difficulties between the hangdown and radiation shields in the furnace tube required that the sample be positioned in the furnace when cold, and heated with the furnace until the temperature stabilized at the desired point. This required 5 to 6 hr, and was carried out in Matheson ultrahigh-purity hydrogen. Oxidation was started, after evacuation, by introducing a hydrogen-water vapor mixture, obtained by saturating hydrogen with water vapor at 31.00o ± 0.02oC. Oxidation was continued for 90 min. Gas flow was 300 ml per min during heat up and oxidation. Since only several milligrams of oxide are formed on each sample, chemical analysis of the oxide is difficult. A representative analysis is: 80 pct Cr2O3, 5 pct Fe2O3, 3 pct Al2O3, 4 pct MnO, 7 pct SiO2, 1 pct or less NiO. X-ray diffraction analysis of the oxide as formed on the alloy gives rhombohedra1 Cr2O3, and barely distinguishable amounts of a cubic spinel phase, and possibly AlZOs and SO2. The identification of these latter two compounds is by no means certain. The spinel phase could be based on iron or manganese as these elements are present in significant amounts in the oxide. The results of the kinetic studies using 31°C dew-point hydrogen-water vapor mixtures were found to conform to a parabolic rate law. In many cases the parabolic plot consisted of two intersecting straight lines, defining an early and a late rate for a particular run, and in the other cases the parabolic plot consisted of one straight line for the entire run. The slopes of the various straight lines were determined by the method of least squares. Reproducibility of the data was good enough for multiple runs at the same temperature such that the value given for the rate constant is the average for two or more closely similar values, rather than widely varying values of the rate, where more than one determination is indicated in Table I. The exhibition of only one or of two rate constants during a run can happen at the same temperature. Thus, Table I shows that at 11'74°C a single rate constant was obtained from one sample, while other samples oxidized at the same temperature gave an early and a late rate constant. It should be noted that the single rate constant corresponds very closely with the early rate constant. This is also true at 1153°C. The time at which the late rate started to appear was variable, usually occurring 20 to 40 min after oxidation had started.

IN mining, quarrying, and construction, drilling and blasting have an important influence on the operations that follow. If the fragmentation of material being disrupted is inadequate, loading and transportation equipment will not operate at or near full capacity. Any operator faced with this difficulty should not be satisfied until he is convinced by a careful study of his methods of drilling and blasting that no improvement can be made. Rock in a certain quarry in Ohio seemed to defy any grade of explosive or means of detonation that the explosives industry had to offer. The average result of a blast was that a great part of the burden would be pushed out from the face in a number of large sections that would jokingly be referred to as "boxcars." These were no credit to the explosives man and a costly problem for the quarry company. Such blocks retard shovel operation as they have to be uncovered and subjected to secondary drilling and blasting which, if extensive, is an expensive operation. It was an attempt to improve the fragmentation obtained in primary blasts that led to the development of milli-second-delay electric blasting caps. The reasoning that prompted the trial was that even with wide spacing of the drill holes it seemed that the burden was separated too quickly from the face by the cutting action of the explosives from hole to hole. EVERY reader of this paper is well aware of the fact that the prolonged inhalation of large amounts of free silica dust results in fibrosis of the lungs, and that other inorganic dusts, except those of asbestos and the mineral poisons, are thought to be relatively harmless. But probably few have had opportunity to visualize the effects of silica, asbestos and other minerals upon living tissues. The ideal demonstration would be based upon sections of lungs from human beings that had inhaled com-parable concentrations of different dusts for a unit period of time. Such material is generally difficult to obtain and in some instances is of ques-tionable value because the subject has been exposed to more than one kind of dust. A demonstration could be prepared from the lungs of animals. However, so many months or even years are required to com-plete the exposure to each kind of dust that enough material has not been accumulated. For a general survey of the action of different types of dust, I am therefore compelled to use the tissues of animals that have been injected with suspensions of dust particles. The injection method offers certain advantages. The quantity, the particle size and the state of dispersion can be controlled with sufficient accuracy so that the tissue responses to different minerals can be accu-rately compared. The method insures contact between the tissues and the mineral particles; protective mechanisms, which may prevent the inhalation of certain types of foreign body, never come into play. If the pathway of injection be one that minimizes nonspecific injury, the tissue responses may simulate those produced by inhalation but they develop somewhat more rapidly. It should always be remembered that injection methods merely demonstrate the capacity of various kinds of minerals to provoke reaction in the tissues; whether the same substances are inhaled from atmospheric suspension and accumulate in the lungs in dangerous quantities can be demonstrated only by inhalation.

Regional structural adjustments in early Tertiary time resulted in the development of the Republic graben, a major down-dropped block that is from 6 to 10 miles in width and more than fifty miles in length. The graben became the center of extensive volcanic activity during Eocene and Oligocene time, resulting in a thick sequence of water-laid tuffaceous sediments, volcanic flows, and associated intrusives. A younger series of sediments, pyroclastics, and flows were deposited in structural depressions within the graben following the period of widespread volcanic activity. The Republic mining district is located along one of the major intragraben structural zones, where continuing subsidence during the period of volcanic activity resulted in an increased thickness of flows and associated flow breccias and pyroclastics. Intrusive masses in part healed early graben-forming faults, but later subsidence reopened old faults and created new fracture zones which later became the control for the gold-quartz veins. Considerable block adjustment along the subsidence area is evidenced by the structural pattern in the mines, and telescoped vein structures indicate north-south compressional stresses and east-west graben-forming tensional stresses prior to and during the emplacement of the veins. The veins, varying from a few feet to more than 50 feet in width, are filled primarily by fine-grained quartz, commonly chalcedonic or porcelain-like in appearance. Finely laminated dark-gray to black concentric banding within the veins generally distinguishes the better-grade ore zones, which contain finely disseminated sulfides and ore minerals that include principally electrum, stephanite, naumannite, and native silver.

In a previous paper1 in which one of the authors collaborated, it was postulated that All dissolved reagents which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on the not-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, junction by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected. This generalization, apparently, like many pioneer structures, had for certain observers a flimsy appearance, and these, judging its stability rather by the number than by the character of its foundation posts, have attempted variously to overthrow it, either by the frontal attack of general denial, or by the flanking movement involved in assuming that those cases in which the facts were unknown or unproved were, therefore, discordant. But as time has passed and further evidence on the question has accumulated, it has become apparent that the results of verifiable experiments add stone by stone to the substructure of the hypothesis, and that the super-tructure has lost nothing in weathering. The present paper constitutes an examination of the opposing positions in the light of the more recent evidence developed. It will clarify the discussion if, at this point, we state more fully the implications of the disputed hypothesis. In the first place, it is explicitly limited to reagents that are dissolved in the water of the flotation pulp. Next, it refers only to such of these dissolved reagents as act on the solid particles in the pulp to affect their floatability. This includes the collectors, activators, and certain depressors and gangue-control reagrnts, but not the pure frothers, and not, necessarily, conditioners whose function seems to be merely that of pH control, although in certain cases it has been demonstrated that such control has the effect of regulating the primary reaction of the collector, depressor, or the like. Finally, there is no limitation as to the nature of the chemical reaction postulated.

MESSRS. BURT and Shockley and others have been for three years urging upon the Institute the matter of simplified spelling. The Institute endeavors to be progressive in the matter of spelling and. is in cooperation with the national body which has this in hand and which has its principal office in New York. Our spellings are changed as fast as-good usage will permit (so it seems to the Board of Directors) and the national body, which is the real representative of the simplified spelling interests, deems that the Institute is making real progress, although not quite as fast as extremists would wish. In January, 1919, Mr. Shockley sent out letter ballots which created a misconception in the minds of many members, who received the impression that the communications came from the Institute instead of from a small group of members. As a result of this propaganda 163 proposal-ballots were sent in to the Institute divided as follows: Yes ?114 No ?20 Negative letters ?9 Split ballots ?20 Total ?163 The total membership at this time was about 7200. The disgusted members would not vote.

I would like to congratulate the authors on an interesting paper and, in particular, on their justification of the use of superposition in treating gas wells. They state, however, that no theory has previously been developed lor treating the variable rate drawdown case. In a paper published a few years ago by my colleagues and myself, a method is described which allows a constant rate drawdown curve to be derived for any well. regardless of real rate variations. This method has the great advantage that it is not necessary to make any assumptions regarding the form or uniformity of the reservoir, and the derivation suggested by the present authors is simply an idealized case of our more general treatment. In the light of several years' experience in the derivation of constant rate drawdown curves: I would like to point out that the method proposed by Odeh and Jones may lead to confusing answers, particularly if applied over an appreciable time interval. The reason is that, if pressures are measured when a well is flowing, non-linearities in plots like Figs. 1 and 2 can arise due to either (1) changes in the skin factor with time and/or flow rate, or (2) an inhomogeneous reservoir. Separation of these two effects is only possible if some of the pressures used in the analysis are measured when the well flow rate is 0 or, in other words. during brief shut-in periods.
