Continuing the increase in production of crude oil and condensate started in 1937, the oil fields of South Arkansas reached a 13-year peak with 26,570,704 bbl. for the year 1942. The stability of the production branch of the industry in the area is demonstrated by Fig. I, which reflects the fact that although the number of producing wells in the state has declined from 3280 in 1931 to 2957 at the end of 1942, total production has continuously increased since the beginning of 1937. This is because all fields discovered since Jan. I, 1937, have observed spacing patterns up to one well to each 160 surface acres, the dual completion of wells where there is more than one producing horizon Eight new pools were brought into production in South Arkansas during 1942 (Fig. 2) They increased the state's crude oil and condensate reserve by 121,000,000 bbl., bringing the total recoverable reserve figure to 450,000,000 bbl. (Table 3) as of Jan. I, 1943. Abandonment of wells in the stripper areas of the state increased by 32 per cent over the preceding year, there having been 142 wells permanently abandoned in 1942. For economic reasons 279 wells were temporarily shut down as of Dec. 31, 1942. A price increase may start these wells to pumping again and also be the incentive toward the commencing of several secondary recovery projects in the fields discovered between 1922 and 1937. The strength variation ofWC-Co alloys with composition and particle spacing falls into two ranges. 1) Above a critical value of the mean free path, the strength follows a dispersion hardening relation; it is proportional to the volume fraction of WC and in-versely proportional to the particle size. 2) Below a critical value of the mean free path, the strength variation is based upon the Griffith criterion of fracture and is controlled by the case of crack propagation. The maximum strength is attained when the structure and load just satisfy the critical conditions for spontaneous crack propagation. THE relation between the strength and the structure of cemented carbides is of interest not only for its own sake but also for its contribution to the understanding of composite materials in general. The cemented carbides are essentially aggregates of a brittle carbide constituent and a ductile binder phase and, at certain structures of intermediate composition, the composite alloys attain strengths far higher than those of the separate constituents in bulk. It is this variation of strength with structure which will be discussed. The experimental procedures of sample preparation, mechanical testing, and quantitative metallo-graphic analysis have been described in Ref. 1. The reported strengths are the maximum fiber-stresses in bending calculated on the basis of completely elastic behavior. The plastic contribution to the over-all deformation is small and was neglected in the calculations (the elongation at fracture of the most ductile alloy, 50 pct WC-50 pct Co, is less than 0.5 pct).2 The pertinent structural parameters are: f, the volume fraction of tungsten carbide; p, the mean free path through the binder phase; the contiguity C, defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by a particle of wc with all neighboring particles of the same phase; and d, the average equivalent spherical diameter of the WC particles. The strength variation of WC-Co alloys with composition and particle spacing is shown in Fig. 1 and Table I, which are based partly on previously published data' and partly on new experimental work which extends the range to higher values of the mean free path. Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ionomolecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers, etc., depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as pH can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the foregoing complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation system is discussed here for two widely used collectors, namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams, based on the available literature data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

Relative wetting phase permeabilities calculated from capillary pressure-saturation data are compared with measured relative permeability data. The equation relating relative permeability to capillary pressure-saturation data is derived by assuming that a porous medium is analogous to a bundle of capillary tubes. The equation includes a term to correct for the difference between fluid path length and length of core. Relative oil permeability data in the water-oil-gas system are presented, and it is shown that if the water is considered part of he rock matrix, the relative oil permeability curve is typical of a wetting phase relative permeability curve. Apparatus for measuring two and three-phase relative permeabilities are described. INTRODUCTION The difficulty in measuring relative permeability of cores has made it desirable to have a correlation between relative permeability and some more easily measured property of porous media. Such an easily measured property is the capillary preisure-saturation relation. In the past there has been a tendency to separate the capillary pressure concept from the very complex pore geometry and to consider that the capillary pressure-saturation curve give? only some characteristic distribution of interfacial curvature between two fluids.' Recently, however, it has been realized that if capillary pressure data are to yield information concerning pore size distribution2 and fluid flow in porous media. the pore must be assumed to have a simple shape such as a cylinder or a sphere. Childs and George' showed that relative water permeability could be calculated from the capillary pressure-water saturation curve by assuming that the pores are cylinders in which the fluid flowing obeys Poiseuille's Law, and that the capillary preisure curve indicated the size and number of pores. Purcell5 derived an equation relating the permeability of a porous medium to the capillary pressure curve by assuming the porous medium to he analogous to a bundle of capillary tubes. Gates and Lietz6 calculated relative permeability by an equa-tion derived from Purcell's equation. In this paper an equation is derived giving the relative water permeability as a function of water saturation by as-sulning that the core sample can be represented by a bundle of capillary tubes in which the fluid path length is not the same as the bulk length, and in which the fluid path length varies with saturation. Monte Carlo methods have been used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms dissolved in tetrahedral sites in bcc lattices. It is assumed that the presence of an interstitial atom "blocks " a certain number of neighboring sites and prevents their occupancy. Sites "blocked" by more than one filled site are allowed for. The computed values of. the mean occupation number (defined as the ratio of the total number of sites blocked to the number of solute atoms are used to calculate the configurational entropies of the solutions. These entropies are compared with those resulting from previous theoretical studies of this problem and also with available experin~ental data for the p Zr-H, Nb-H, V-H, and Ta-H systems. Evidence is also given that the "blocking" explanation of low limiting compositions in these systems, rather than this being due to initial limitations on the number of sites available, is probably correct. THE ideal partial configurational entropy of mixing of an interstitial solute in a metal is given by: where p is the number of interstitial sites per metal atom and Xi is the atomic fraction of the interstitial. For the bcc lattice. which we shall be concerned with in this paper, the interstitial positions are shown in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the tetrahedral sites, p=6. whereas for the octahedral sites, p = 3. Different emphasis has been placed on the relative importance of energy and entropy effects in determining deviations from ideality in interstitial solid solutions. In some cases the same system, e.g., Fe-C, has been described by the contradictory regular and athermal solution models indicating that the enthalpy and entropy functions, derived from equilibrium data, are frequently not accu.rate enough to differentiate between these treatments. However, for certain metal-hydrogen solutions the equilibrium data is available over sufficiently wide ranges of temperature and composition to permit a reasonably accurate determination of the compositional variation of the heats and entropies. Hoch&apos; has attempted to interpret the results of interstitial solid solutions in terms of a regular solution model. In the case of the Ta-H system where 13 = 6, this model entails fitting the experimental relative partial entropies of solution, asH, to the equation: where ASgs is the relative partial excess entropy of solution of hydrogen. Hoch found that the results of Mallett and Koeh1 could be fitted to this equation with an approximately constant value of AF up to XH = 0.25. However, it is apparent from the solubility isotherms in this system which become asymptotic to the composition TaH that, since (Xh /6 - ~Xh ) becomes infinite only at TaH6, it is necessary that AS<&apos; tends to infinity at TaH. In other words, the low saturation composition of TaH, instead of the anticipated TaH,, eliminates the possibility of applying regular solution theory to such systems. Rather large negative excess configurational entropies must exist at higher hydrogen concentrations in order to explain the lower saturation values. To account for these low limiting compositions and excess entropies two distinctly different approaches have been followed. Rees and many others1-l2 have assumed that not all interstitial sites are crystallographically equivalent with respect to the interstitial addition; that is, in Eq. [I] p is less than the value anticipated from geometrical considerations. To describe, say, a bcc metal-hydrogen system with a limiting composition of MH by this approach one would consider that p = 1 in the first instance instead of p = 6.&apos;j3 In some cases, nonintegral values of B have been taken in order to improve the fit with the experimental data over limited ranges of composition. The other approach which has been used to explain the low saturation compositions is to assume that, although all sites are available for occupancy, strong repulsive interactions exist between the neighboring interstitial atoms, and hence occupancy of any site excludes or blocks a certain number of neighboring sites from being occupied. Earliest treatments of this concept considered the exclusion of an integral number, of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied at all concentrations. In this case, the partial configurational entropy is given by: These early treatments failed to allow for the overlap of the blocked sites which will arise at all but the very lowest concentrations. More recently attempts have been made to calculate the effect of this decrease in the number of blocked sites on the configurational entropy. Using the quasichemical treatment of interstitial solid solutions as given by Lacher and assuming that an infinite repulsive interaction energy existed between the solute atoms. atom obtained an approximate configurational entropy applicable to the blocking with overlap case:

R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. W. P. Blake, Shullsburg, Wis.: I desire to express my admiration of Prof. Posepny&apos;s memoir, and particularly of the charming manner and spirit of the introduction. With respect to his mention of the ore-deposits of Missouri and Wisconsin, reference may be made to my paper presented at this meeting (Trans., xxii., 621)) showing the existence of dislocations and breaks in the bedding, and their apparent close relation with the localization of the ore-deposits as claimed by Dr. James G. Percival, and also so claimed by Dr. Jenney in his paper before us (Trans., xxii., 171). I have in my paper given reasons for believing that the zinc- and lead-ores in the strata above the compact Trenton limestones were formed by lateral secretion and concentration from above downwards, substantially as shown by Prof. J. D. Whitney, and not by the ascent of solutions through the fissures, as Prof. Posepny (p. 304) seems inclined to believe. In regard to the contemporaneity of the ore and the rocks, and in favor of a later introduction of ore through fault-fissures, Prof. Posepny (p. 310) cites the influence of these fissures. In my paper, already referred to, I have endeavored to show how faults may have influenced the deposition of ore without being themselves channels for the flow of mineral solutions, and how they may have caused the contemporaneous formation of metallic sulphides from sea-water in the body of a forming rock; the faulting fissure being formed at an early period in the foundation rocks, and probably continuing to be a plane of break and movement in the deposits of later formation.

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek&apos; for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. CASE OF A CIRCULAR DRAINAGE AREA AND A CENTRAL WELL PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION BEFORE SHUT-IN The general differential equation of radial flow (see Muskat, Eq. 10.2) may be written In the steady state, the rate of production of the well is equal to the rate of expansion of the fluid contained in the the drainage area; thus

Oxide and silicates respond to flotation with a large number of anionic collectors. These include carboxylates (fatty acids), sulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and certain chelating agents. In contrast to sulfide mineral flotation, relatively long-chained collectors (generally longer than 10 carbons) are required to effect flotation of this group of minerals. The structural formulas of these various anionic collectors are presented in Table 1. Formulas and solubilities of various fatty acids are presented in Table 2. These solubilities are those of the dissolved and undissociated species of the acid, e.g. oleic acid, HOl(aq). Of the compounds listed, oleic acid and abietic acid, which IS a major constituent of talloel, are used most commonly in commercial applications. The usage of these two collectors is related to cost and effectiveness. In addition to their high molecular weights, oleic acid contains a double bond in its hydrocarbon chain, while abietic acid is comprised of aromatic rings containing double bonds. The presence of double bonds increases solubility significantly over that of saturated homologues. Stability of metal-collectors assumes a most significant role in these systems, and the solubility products of various metal carboxylates and sulfonates are listed in Tables 3, 4 and 5. In addition to these properties, strength of the acids of these various anionic collectors is also important. The carboxylic and hydroxamic acids are weak acids whereas sulfonic and alkyl sulfuric acids are strong acids. All of the carboxylic acids fall in the range of pK = 4.7 ± 0.5 ([2]); the pK of hydroxamic acid is around 9 ([3]); and the pK of sulfonic acid is about 1.5 ([4]).

I WOULD like to spend a few minutes describing to you the present condition which exists in the oil industry and then point out some aspects of this deplorable situation in which I think petroleum engineers can be helpful. As you know, the oil business at this time is in a very critical condition, .due to the tremendous potential production in excess of current demand. This is a world-wide condition as well as a national problem, as it is estimated that the surplus production available for the market in foreign countries is of about the same proportion as that existing in the United States. Due to the inability within the United States to hold production within the bounds of demand prices have been slumping for the last four years and at this time have reached the point where the sales value of the average barrel of crude oil in the United States, is far below the cost, of production. In addition to the large amount of potential production available for the market in excess of demand we have in storage in the United States about six hundred fifty millions of barrels &apos;of oil. Unless something can be done to limit the amount of oil coming onto the market to a point well below the demand, which point will permit the reduction of stocks, it looks as though the &apos;oil business is facing demoralization.

DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP&apos;&apos;;4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. None of the currently used methods of testing bentonites as binders for strengthening iron ore pellets is entirely adequate by itself. Since more knowledge was needed about 1) which properties of bentonite most affect pellet strength, and 2) the precise mechanism by which strengthening is produced, attention was paid to possible new techniques for rating bentonites. With the structural nature of bentonites — in particular, the montmorillonite component — the possibility of rating bentonites on the basis of zeta potential was investigated. These bentonites were also rated by conventional tests and measurements, including colloid content, barrel yield, pH, chemical analysis and physical tests on green and dry pellets. A mechanism for pellet bonding based on electro-kinetic forces between the bentonite and the iron ore concentrate appears to be feasible. In pelletizing, from 6 to 18 lbs of bentonite is added per ton of concentrate to give strength to the green and dry pellets. In some operations even more bentonite than is required for strengthening purposes must be added for moisture adsorption to pennit balling of the concentrate. Since bentonite is thus a major item in pelletizing, more knowledge about the way in which bentonites act as binders and better ways of rating this ability would help in the difficult job of selecting the right bentonite for a given concentrate. The fact of the matter is that although several methods are in current use for testing bentonites, none of these methods are consistently foolproof. For example, a given bentonite may rate high by several standard tests yet turn out to be a poor binder, and of course the reverse also occurs. Actually, more knowledge is needed about 1) which properties of bentonite most affect pellet strength, and 2) the precise mechanism by which strengthening is produced. In this study attention is therefore paid to possible new techniques for rating bentonites. With the structural nature of bentonites as a starting point, we investigated the possibility of rating bentonites on the basis of the zeta potential, i.e., the electrokinetic ootential on the montmorillonite colloids — the main component of bentonite binders. The zeta potential technique was applied to a range of commercial bentonites from several areas in the U.S. and abroad. THE present methods of unloading ore and coarse-crushing at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. are the developments of the past five years. Hand dumping and breaking have given way to the rotary car dump and large gyratory; and the bucket elevators and stationary screens have been replaced by conveyors and shaking screens. The coarse-crushing plant may be broadly divided into two units: the primary crushing and the secondary crushing, or primary roll, unit. The former was erected in 1923; with the exception of the excavation, the construction was carried on by forces of the company. Excavation was started in the middle of March, the first concrete was poured July 16, erection of the steel building started Oct. 30, and the unit was com-pleted and operating Dec. 30. The unit has a capacity of over 24,000 tons of ore per day, and cost more than a million dollars. Remodeling of the primary-roll unit extended over a period of years preceding this, some of the work having been done as early as 1918.
