[Introduction The critical surface tension of wetting of hydrophobic materials has been investigated extensively by Zisman et al. (1973) and relates the spreading of a liquid on a solid to the surface tension of this liquid. Thus, the Zisman ap¬proach shows that a plot of Cos 0 versus ?LV where, 0 is the contact angle and ?LV is the surface tension of that liquid in contact with its own vapor at equilibrium, produces a straight line which can be extrapolated to Cos 0 = 1. The intercept corresponds to a given ?LV, termed the critical surface tension of wetting. In instances, however, Cos 0 - ?LV plots show deviations from linearity. Alternative approaches have also included the plotting of adhesion tension (YLV COs 0) versus ?LV that can be interpreted in terms of critical surface tension data (Lucassen-Reynders, 1963). It has, on the other hand, been customary to correlate contact angle (0) with flotation data, although it is recognized that surface inhomogeneities and related contact angle hysteresis limit the interpretations pertaining to solid surface structures purely based on contact angle measurements. It is nonetheless true that 0 = 0, when the liquid is water, corresponds to a hydrophilic solid. Determination of ?c by contact angle measurements in conformity with the Zisman approach can encounter experimental difficulties, especially when solids are in a powder form. Following the reasoning that 0 = 0 corresponds to the hydrophilic state of a solid, froth flotation experiments can be expected to produce critical surface tension of wetting values for powders. The technique that consists of plotting recovery (% R) versus YLV data and extrapolating the linear part of the curve to % R = 0, has been described elsewhere (Yarar and Kaoma, 1984). This paper describes some of the results obtained by the extrapolation technique mentioned above, using various sulfide minerals. Experimental Materials Molybdenite (MoS2), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S), and galena (PbS) were handsorted from massive samples and ground by mortar and pestle, and the -147 Fan fraction used in experiments; sulfur (S) was a C.P. Fisher Scientific Co. product. Method One gram powder samples were conditioned for three minutes in methanol-water solutions of predetermined surface tension values and the percents recovered by flotation using a Partridge-Smith Cell (Partridge and Smith, 1972), were plotted against each ?LV value. Results and Discussion The percent recovery versus ?LV for two naturally hydrophobic solids, i.e., natural molybdenite, MoS2 and sulfur are given in Fig. 1 where it is seen that ?c for sulfur is obtained as 31.5 mNm-1 whereas for MoS2, it is 26 mNm-1. Figure 1 also shows that the new flotation technique described, for estimating ?c is in good agreement with the Zisman method. Curves obtained by the same method for the minerals Cu2S, PbS, and ZnS are given in Fig. 2, where it is seen that for Cu2S, ZnS, and PbS, the extrapolation to % R = 0 produces ?c values of 36, 39, and 49 mNm-1, respectively. CuFeS2, on the other hand, gives a curve that does not permit such an extrapolation to obtain a ?c value with certainty. Nonetheless, treatment of the powder with 8.95 X 10-5 molar Na2S solution followed by washing with distilled water prior to flotation effects the curves as shown in the insert of Fig. 2. The type of curves given in Fig. 1 appear to be typical of hydrophobic solids as can also be observed in Fig. 3. The composition of solid and minute quantities of inclusions seem to play an important role as regards the surface properties of solids as reflected by the slope of the linear part of the % R - ?LV plot and thus the value of ?c obtained by this technique. The Iraq Petroleum Company, Ltd. continued its systematic exploration and exploitation of the Kirkuk field on a unitized basis. Pressures, gas-oil ratios, oil-water level and oil-gas level remained satisfactory. All wells were produced by flowing and more than two-thirds of the crude was stabilized. The only exports from Iraq during 1937 were from the Kirkuk field. Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the British Oil Development Company, Ltd., inaugurated an exploratory program to find lighter oil than the heavy, black, sulphurous reserve proved in the Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab field. Deeper drilling in this field found a small reserve of 17" to 19" A.P.I. black sulphurous oil in the Pilsner (Upper Cretaceous). Ten structures outside the proved field were tested or were under test at the end of the year. In spite of this intensive program no reserve of lighter oil was discovered. The reserve at Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab averages 16" A.P.I. with 6+ per cent sulphur from the "continuous limestone" (Lower Miocene, Oligocene, Middle Eocene) and from the Pilsner (Upper Cretaceous). The Khanaqin Oil Company, Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Ltd., conducted the normal exploitation of its Naft Khaneh oil field and supplied the local Iraq market requirements. Slightly more than 31,600,000 bbl. of crude was produced in Iraq during 1937. The following table gives the total crude produced by the I.P.C. for export during the last four years. It is pointed out that the current concept of pore size distribution is not unequivocally defined and that different methods aiming at a determination of such a distribution therefore do not lead to the same results. A pore size distribution should not be based on the idea that a core should, under all circumstances, behave as a bundle of straight non-interconnected capillaries of the same pore size distribution. This is illustrated by calculations and experiments on the displacement of miscible liquids. INTRODUCTION The introduction of the concept of pore size distribution has been an attempt to characterize the intricate geometry of the flow channels in porous media. As pores in a porous medium are interconnected it is impossible to describe exactly what is meant by a "pore" and, therefore, the term pore size distribution requires further amplification. In the visual method for the determination of pore size distribution "the pore" is considered to be the hole between the grains as observed on thin sections or on a polished surface of the rock under a microscope. In all other presently known methods,1,2 a displacement process is studied and it is ascertained what as- semblaae of straight cylindrical capillaries would show the same behavior. The distribution of the capillary diameters of this assemblage is said to represent the size distribution of the pores of the actual porous medium. From the foregoing it is already apparent that it is useless to try to decide which process or which method of investigation leads to a "correct" pore size distribution. To illustrate this further a displacement process in which a fluid is displaced by another miscible with it will be discussed and the results will be interpreted in terms of a pore size distribution. DISPLACEMENT EXPERIMENTS WITH MISCIBLE LIQUIDS OF NEARLY IDENTICAL VISCOSITY AND DENSITY Interpretation in the Form of a Pore Size Distribution If distilled water is displaced from a homogeneous unconsolidated sand pack by, for instance, a dilute solution of NaCI, the breakthrough recovery i.e., the amount of distilled water produced at the moment the first trace of NaCl can be detected in the effluent water, is between 95 and 100 per cent of the pore volume of the pack. This result can be understood by following in imagination the course of one particle of the liquid. Imagine a length, ?l, at the end of which a liquid particle has an independent chance of a renewed choice of pores of different diameters. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, ad rnetallo-graphic methods were used to establish the Dy-Pb Phase diagram. Lead additions lower the 1377°C transformation temperature of dysprosium to 1360°C leading to an inverted peritectic reaction. The 327°C melting point of lead is lowered by dysprosium additions to about 326°C yielding a eutectic reaction. A second eutectic reaction occurs at 13.3 at. pct Pb and 1200°C. The dysprosium-richest intermetallic compound DysPb3 melts congruently at 1695°C and crystallizes in the hexagonal Mn5Si3 (D8,) type structure. The peritectic decomposition temperatures for the remaining compounds are Dy5Pb, at 1555C, DyPb2 at 955C, and DyPb3 at 880°C. A fifth compound near the DyPb stoichiometry exists over a 310°C temperature range decomposing at 1130°C by means of an inverted peritectic reaction and melting incongruently at 1440°C. The crystal structures of the compounds are discussed. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems is underway in an effort to supply information concerning the alloying behavior of the rare earth metals. The Dy-Pb phase diagram is the fourth system to be investigated in this study. The Yb-Pb,1 Y-Pb,2 and Eu-Pb 3 diagrams have been published recently. Utilization of the rare earth series of metals as a research tool in this manner should yield a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The lead used in this investigation was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. The dysprosium was prepared in this Laboratory by the calcium reduction of the fluoride followed by distillation of the dysprosium. The major impurities in the dysprosium in ppm are: A1 (<40), Ca (400), Er (<50), Gd (<200), Ho (<200), Mg (<50), Si (30), Ta (400), Tb (<100), Y (<50), 0 (651, H (15), N (not detected), F (430), C (35). Alloy Preparation. Most of the alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of dysprosium and lead in sealed tantalum crucibles. The tantalum crucibles were sealed by are-welding in a He-Ar atmosphere welding chamber. Thus the alloys are in contact with He-Ar at about 1 atm pressure. Homogenization was achieved by holding them in the liquid state for about 1 hr, cooling, inverting the crucibles, remelting, and repeating the process at least twice. Since these alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum crucibles, chemical analysis for final composition was thought to be unnecessary. No detectable reaction of these alloys with the tantalum crucible was observed by metallographic examination. Metallographic evidence was also used to confirm the homogeneity of some of the alloys prepared in this manner. The compositions of a few alloys, which were prepared by nonconsum-able are-melting, were corrected for the small weight losses involved by assuming that the weight loss is due to vaporization of lead. The specimens obtained from the alloy samples were prepared under a dry-argon atmosphere because they were rapidly attacked by air and moisture. Thermal Analysis. Differential thermal analysis methods were used to determine the liquidus curves and reaction horizontals of the system. Both Pt vs Pt + 13 pct Rh and W + 5 pct Re vs W + 26 pct Re thermocouples were used to measure the temperature. An X- Y recorder was used to record the specimen temperature and differential electromotive force between the specimen and molybdenum standard. The arrest temperatures were measured potentiometri-cally. The accuracy limits (* values) associated with the reaction temperatures obtained by this method were estimated on the basis of both the reproducibility of the particular temperature value and the accuracy of the thermocouple at a given temperature. Liquidus temperatures were obtained from cooling arrest data while both heating and cooling arrest data were used to establish the horizontals of the diagram. Heat treatments during the thermal analyses of the alloys between 40 and 70 at. pct Pb were necessary in order to approach equilibrium conditions. The samples were held at temperatures between the various peritectic horizontals for l to 2 hr before the thermal analyses were continued. The entire range of compositions was investigated at the expense of a minimum amount of materials by adding appropriate amounts of lead to master alloys. More than sixty alloys were analyzed by this differential thermal method and for each alloy the results given herein are taken from two or three heating and cooling cycles. X-Ray and Metallographic Methods. Slice specimens for metallography and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared from rod-shaped samples which had been melted in sealed 0.62 5-cm-diam tantalum crucibles. The specimens were heat-treated in sealed tantalum crucibles which were protected by sealing them in argon-filled quartz ampules. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the ampules in ice water after heat treatment. X-ray powder specimens were sealed in 0.3-mm-diam glass capillaries under a dry-argon atmosphere. Copper, iron, and chromium radiation were used to obtain the powder patterns for these alloys. More than 150 powder patterns were obtained for specimens of various compositions and heat treatments. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a mininium amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. William A. Haven was born to iron steel in the Pittsburgh district on ;. 1, 1888, and in due time--or in 1909 graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor degree in industrial chemistry.

I. L. Dillamore (University of Birmingham)—The different textures developed in various fcc metals have long awaited satisfactory explanation and it has now become clear that these differences are related to parallel differences in the deformation characteristics of the metals. Liu is correct, therefore, in seeking to account for the observed textures in terms of the flow mechanisms but I believe, for the reasons outlined below, that the particular interpretation of flow mechanisms proposed by Liu is open to substantial objections. By considering the forty-eight possible designations of the twelve octahedral slip systems found in fcc metals as distinct and separate deformation modes, Liu has fallen into the error of assuming that only positive glide dislocations associated with each system are present. In fact both positive and negative dislocations will be present and the only difference between for instance the systems B4 and B4&apos; (in Liu&apos;s notation) is that under a stress of given sign the direction of motion of a dislocation is reversed on changing from B4 to B4&apos;. For both orientations positive and negative dislocations will be present. In considering possible dislocation interactions it is, therefore, inadmissible to differentiate between R4 and R4&apos; as Liu does. Liu considers those dislocation interactions which give the biggest reduction in energy to be the most favorable and neglects, on the grounds that they will form strong barriers to slip, interactions between dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors. Setting aside interactions between positive and negative dislocations of the same slip system, which must occur regardless of the combination of slip systems chosen, the biggest reduction in energy occurs for the Lomer-Cottrell interaction and it is Lomer-Cottrell barriers which are thought to provide the stronger dislocation obstacles. On the other hand the intersection of dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors is thought to be a low-energy process which contributes only a fairly small temperature-dependent part of the total work hardening. On this basis it seems doubtful whether the reduction in energy through possible dislocation interactions provides a reasonable criterion for choosing the operative slip systems. From the point of view of texture development it is unsatisfactory to ignore the slip rotations leading to an end position and to neglect to consider the stability of the chosen end point. It is also unsatisfactory to treat the two stress axes as interchangeable since, if the stress system is idealized as biaxial, one stress is compressive and the other is tensile. For the same reason the rotations of the two stress axes are not made compatible simply by assuming that the same slip directions are responsible for the rotations of the two stress axes. It is, in short, essential to treat the two stress axes as acting together on the same slip systems. Turning to the question of the difference between the copper-type and the brass-type texture, there now remains little doubt that the difference is attributable to differences in stacking-fault energy (y), as noted by Liu, but it is doubtful whether the temperature dependence of the texture in copper and in silver is due to increasing stacking-fault energy with increasing temperature. The results of Swann and Nutting42 cited by Liu were obtained in Cu-A1 alloys and the apparent increase in stacking-fault energy on raising the temperature may be influenced by short-range ordering. In pure metals such effects are absent and the only data available on the variation of y with temperature are those of Buhler et a1.43 for silver. They report a minimum at 200°C which does not fit the hypothesis put forward by Liu. It is much more likely that thermal activation of cross slip is important in determining which texture develops, as proposed by Dillamore and tors. These workers have proposed an explanation for the differences in observed texture among the fcc metals and the pole figures predicted consist of an orientation spread which is in better agreement with observation than the limited number of discrete orientations suggested by Liu. The theory of Dillamore and Roberts is also able to account for the differences between aluminum and copper which Liu still leaves unexplained. Y. C. A. B. Cummins (Industrial Minerals Review, P. 164) was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and attended the University of Chicago and University of California. He received a B.S. and Ph.D. degree. He has worked at University of California and as a development and research engineer with Celite Co. He is at the present manager of research at Johns-Manville Co. in Manville, N. J. Dr. Cummins is an AIME member and has presented previous papers before it. He resides in Bound Brook, N. J. Aureal T. Cross (Recent Coal Geology Research, P. 202) was born in Findlay, Ohio. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the University of Cincinnati. He received major honors at Coe College and was given a National Research Council Fellowship in geology from 1943 to 1944. He was assistant professor at Notre Dame University from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Cross was a paleobotanist with U. S. Bureau of Mines, Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh. He was assistant professor of geology at West Virginia University from 1949 to date. He holds membership in Geological Society of America, Paleontological Society, Botanical Society, Sigma Xi, and numerous similar societies.

I have used for about two years, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Company, a rapid method for the determination of phosphorus in iron, steel, and ores, which possesses one or two features sufficiently novel to warrant description. In general, it is the method described by Mr. Benjamin B. Wright (Transactions, vol. x., p. 197), involving the precipitation of the phosphorus by means of molybdate solution, and its estimation in the yellow precipitate by reduction of the molybdic acid, and titration of the resulting oxide with a standardized permanganate solution, according to the principles laid down by Werncke (Fres, Zeit., vol. xiv., p. 1). In the use of this method, I had difficulty at first in obtaining a yellow precipitate of reasonably uniform composition. It is a well-known fact that, to secure this result, the conditions of precipitation must not vary. The principal condition is temperature; and acidity, concentration, proportion of nitrates and chlorides, and time, are important elements. I am aware that uniformity in these conditions has been obtained to a reasonable extent by many chemists,. so that they are enabled to use with success, methods based on the

SIX years have passed since the last grindability table was published.&apos; In that time the list has been increased with many new tests, and the development of the new Third Theory of Comminution2 has made possible the reduction of all results to a consistent work index value. In this tabulation all grindability and crushability test results are given in terms of the work index, with formulas for reversion to the older units if desired. The average values for 57 different classes of materials are listed in Table I. The total number of work index values listed is 1211, and the overall average work index is 14.42. The complete tabulation, with each test listed alphabetically both under material type and under company name, can be obtained by writing to the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Processing Machinery Department, Milwaukee 1, Wisconsin. The work index Wi is the calculated total work input in kilowatt-hours per short ton required to re- duce from theoretically infinite particle size to 80 pct passing 100 microns, or to approximately 67 pct passing 200 mesh. The work inputs required per ton for the same size reduction of different materials are directly proportional to their work indexes, and according to the Third Theory the work input per ton is inversely proportional to the square root of the diameter of the product particles. IN order to determine the magnitude of thermal conductivity changes resulting from alloying vanadium with titanium and a few other elements, several sam~les were PrePared and measured. The thermal conductivity -values reported herein in Table I were determined with an apparatus previously described.&apos; As in recently reported2 determinations on uranium and uranium alloys, whose thermal conductivities are in the same range as vanadium," the accuracy of the values was checked by using synthetic sapphire." The error in the measurement is estimated to be &apos;-3 pct or 0.003 cal sec-1 cm-l "C-1, whichever is larger. The vanadium used in preparing the samples was the calcium-reduced type and was supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. as 99.6+ pct pure. All alloying elements used in the preparations were 99+ pct pure. A nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace was used for melting the alloys and, without opening the furnace, each ingot was re-melted a number of times to insure homogeneity. The samples as prepared by the Armour Research Foundation were machined from as forged material without annealing. Acknowledgment The note is based on work performed under the auspices of the AEC. THE following data were obtained during Tan exhaustive research into the possibilities of concentrating United Verde massive sulfide copper-zinc-iron ores by flotation. The composition of these ores approximates the following mineralogical analysis: 3 to 15 per cent chalcopyrite; 3 to 11 per cent marmatite (ferruginous sphalerite) ; 47 to 69 per cent pyrite; and 10 per cent quartz. The remainder is usually schist gangue. The sulfide minerals are finely dis-seminated; chalcopvrite and marmatite begin to be liberated on grinding at about 100 mesh, but complete liberation from gangue (pyrite in this case is considered a gangue mineral) is

DISCUSSION Judson S. Hubbard (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—In this very interesting paper several brief references are made to the Humphreys spiral, a device used for cleaning fine coal. In Table I, Plants 76 and 77, data are given on spiral performance treating Raton and Trinidad coal. The fine coal, as fed to the spiral in these instances, is actually a table middling, hence the more easily treated material was previously removed and a large number of particles were present which were difficult to clean. Mr. W. M. Bertholf of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. presented a paper in February, 1946, Cleaning Table Middlings from a Coal Washery with the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator, from which I quote: "In considering the results of our tests it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation is a &apos;moral victory&apos; as there is little material that could properly be called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequences being that previous attempts to clean the middling have not at all been successful." Referring again to Table I, Plants 72, 73, 74, and 75, these data were obtained by Yancey and Geer and others and presented at the February 1950 Meeting, AIME, in a paper entitled Laboratory Performance Tests of the Humphreys Spiral as a Cleaner of Fine Coal. Results shown for those tests involve all particles from 8 mesh through the colloids, which admittedly is not an ideal situation for spiral feed if much refuse is contained in the —80 mesh or —100 mesh size range. As an illustration of the effect of treating too broad a size range, let us consider Plant No. 75, Kentucky No. 9 seam. Spiral feed was 8 mesh x 0. Now had this been 8x100 mesh the percentage of misplaced material would have been 8.0 pct instead of the reported 15.26 pct. Similar comparisons can be made on the other data presented with respect to the spiral. Other types of equipment show a similar trend in that whenever too fine a size is treated in a given unit process the percentage of misplaced material increases. Since the spiral is working near the finer end of the size range, it will sometimes be advantageous to treat the entire range of —8 mesh material rather than to deslime and make a fair showing on, say, the +80 or + I00 mesh. Desliming is subsequently done in any case in the dewatering or thickening operation. Results obtained by spiraling any given coal depend on factors too numerous and complex to discuss here, but there are strong indications that proper preparation of feed to the spiral can improve results obtained on some of the raw coals tested. This is clearly pointed out at the end of the aforementioned paper by Yancey and Geer. "The spiral is an extremely simple device which involves no moving parts and is constructed almost entirely of unmachined castings. Since it is such an uncomplicated mechanism, operation is simple and virtually foolproof. These characteristics, which go far toward insuring low cost operation, are attractive attributes in any coal cleaning unit." Certain equipment used in conjunction with the spiral has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of misplaced material, notably in actual practice the launder screen which is used to remove objectionable high ash fines from a spiral-washed coal product. Private correspondence with the U. S. Bureau of Mines has intimated that an additional yield of coal is possible by flotation of the spiral middling. Possible future improvements and developments may result from other methods now under consideration. Finally, some compromise must be made between the best metallurgical performance and the best practical or economical results. Mr. Lyons emphasizes in his summary this objective of overall economy in selection of equipment. G. B. Walker (American Cyanamid Co., Stamford, Conn.)—I had the pleasure of reviewing the draft of this paper and my curiosity was aroused by the data given for Tromp plants, in that all of the examples shown appeared to be 2-product separations, whereas all the Tromp plants with which I am familiar have been 3-product units. The data given for plants No. 101 and 102 appear to be taken from Tromp&apos;s brochure on his process and represent the results obtained at the Dominale plant in Holland which was operated for many years by Mr. Tromp. The plant, which was designed to treat 58 tons per hr, was sampled while treating 35 tons per hr of 3Y4x-in. coal. Example 101 appears to conform to what would result if the middling product were calculated into the refuse product, while Example 102 represents the calculation of the middling into the coal product. It is believed that Examples 103 and 104 represent the operation of the Willem-Sophie Mine in Holland recalculated on the same basis. In checking the English examples given by numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17, the same procedure seems to have been followed. These results have, apparently, been taken from an article in Colliery Engineering in August 1941, describing the initial operation of the Williamthorpe Colliery of the Hardwick Colliery Co. Two vessels are employed in this plant, one to treat soft coal and one to treat hard coal. Example No. 14 presents the results that could be obtained from the soft coal bath if the middling were calculated into the refuse, and Example 15 the results when the middling is calculated into the coal. Examples 16 and 17 represent the same expedient in the case of the hard coal bath. Of interest to this discussion is the fact that during the past year the Simon-Carves Engineering Co. in England has installed in the Williamthorpe plant their new "Sim-Car" medium cleaning system which is based on magnetic extraction and control and which is licensed under the Heavy-Media Separation Processes patents by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. This system has been described in the December 1951, issue of Colliery Engineering. It is reported that since the Williamthorpe Colliery was changed from the Tromp system of medium cleaning to the Magneto-Motive method of medium control the opera-

The only way in which the difficult problems of classification of coal for the manufacture of by-product coke can be solved is to analyze them by the use of scientific data. It is very easy to adopt classifications for coal for the manufacture of by-product coke along certain lines; we can easily say that for a certain class of metallurgical operation coke made from bituminous coal must not contain more than so much sulfur or more than so much ash and should yield certain returns in the by-products, tar, ammonia, benzol, gas, etc. Those points we are fairly clear on and I think it is hardly worth while to discuss them because I presume that they are familiar to most of us who have any occasion either to make coke or to use it. But there is a field in the manufacture of coke which we know very little about. For example, we are operating a plant on a certain mixture of coal. Suddenly our blast-furnace man or the user of the coke tells us the coke is not as good as it was before. The coke is analyzed and the coal is analyzed. Everything seems to be about the same as it was— the ash is the same, there is no more sulfur, and so on—but the coke, for the use to which it is put, particularly in the blast furnace, is wrong. What happens? The management decide to try a slightly different coal mixture. They do not necessarily raise the total hydrocarbons, the volatile matter in the mixture, nor change the sulfur or the ash, but they do make a change which improves the value of the coke for metallurgical use. The reason for this difficulty, as I see it, is the " combustibility " of the coke—I hesitate to use the word, but it is the best one I have available. Combustibility of Coke We know now that the combustibility of coke is a very vital point in many metallurgical processes and I think one of the most notable instances of the proof of this is the experience of the Carnegie Steel Co. in the production of coke at its Clairton plant. We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. IF, in this study of the outlook for the copper industry of the United states, I find myself assuming to be prophetic in some respects I shall express myself with hesitation and with the foresight that after the end of the war with Germany the war with Japan may continue; anyway there is sure to be an uneasy period before copper and the other metals begin to flow smoothly through the natural channels of consumption. It is mainly my purpose to survey conditions and suggest some probabilities, or possibilities, rather than to prophesy. In interpreting them it will be necessary to make certain aasurnptions, among which will be (1) expectation of a rise in the general price level,, which so far has been one-sided; (2) continuance of the k. tariff on copper imports; and (3) lock-up of government-owned copper as a military re- serve. Of these assumptions the first is indicated by the lessons from economic history, and by current symptoms. The second and third depend upon political action by Congress.
