As a preliminary, consicleration is given to the conventional definition of relative permeability and to the conditions governing the simultaneous flow of oil and gas through porous media. For the conditions of flow prevailing throughout most of a gas drive reservoir, the oil and gas can reasonably be supposed to be in capillary equilibrium with each other. Under these conditions, and these conditions only, the relative permeability to liquid can be expressed as a function of saturation. The relative permeability to liquid in that case is dependent upon the distribution of fluids which itself is shown to be related to the capillary pressure, and, in turn, to the saturation. As a consequence, relative permeability to liquid can be expressed in terms of the volume and surface area of a network of liquid channels bounded by the rock and the gas phase. While the volume of this network can be evaluated accurately, the surface area cannot. However, for any such volume, maximum and minimum values of the corresponding surface area can be calculated from capillary pressure data. It is then possible to establish for any saturation the limits within which the value of the relative permeability to liquid must lie. As a consequence of the theoretical development, the validity of an experimental method for measuring relative permeability to liquid which utilizes a stationary gas phase is demonstrated. In this method capillary barriers are cemented to the ends of the core sample to permit the maintenance of capillary equilibrium between the two phases. At the same time, this procedure eliminates undesirable secondary phenomena such as end effects, fissure effects, etc., the presence of which adversely affect the results of other laboratory methods. The results obtained by theoretical calculations, and experimentally, are discussed. In view of the overall precision that can presently be obtained in reservoir calculations, the agreement between the calculated and measured relative permeability to liquid data can be considered satisfactory. In conclusion, for reasons of economy and simplicity, the procedure of calculating limiting relative permeability to liquid curves from capillary pressure data is indicated for general engineering purposes. It is shown that the above procedure can easily be extended to the cases where connate water is present. Its use for reservoir studies is particularly recommended in conjunction with the method for measuring relative permeability to gas' which simultaneously yields the capillary pressure data necessary for the calculations. According to these expressions, each of the constituent phases is considered similar to a homogeneous system where the volumetric rate of flow is proportional to the pressure gradient, and for each of which the constants of proportionality, k, and kG, are termed effective permeabilities. by analogy to the specific permeability as defined by Darcy's law in its original form. In order to obtain a convenient basis of comparison, the effective permeabilities are referred to the specific permeability, k, of the considered porous medium, with the help of the relations: k1. = KI. k kQ = Kn k..........(2) K,. and Kr. are defined as the relative permeabilities to the liquid and to the gas phase respectively, and frequently expressed in per cent of specific permeability. It may be seen that Equations (1); which appear to be a direct generalization of Darcy's law, correspond to the assignment at any given time of a set of "local" permeabilities to each point of the porous medium, and represent in a differential form the two fluid flow system as a simple superposition of the individual single flow systems. In June, 1893, while I was with the Old Dominion Copper Co. at Globe, Ariz., I received an offer to take charge, as manager, of the Baltimore Electric? Refining Co. which had recently built a plant at Baltimore, Md., having a capacity of about 1200 tons of electrolytic copper per month, using the Hayden series system. This was a very large output, for in those days the plants were small and the art was in its infancy. At the beginning of 1893 there were 11 electrolytic refineries in the United States, most of them using the multiple system. The Hayden series system was used at Baltimore and Bridgeport and the Smith series system was in operation at the Electrolytic Copper Co. at Ansonia, COM., and at the Pennsylvania Salt Co. at Philadelphia. In the latter system the plates were placed in a horizontal position, but the operating difficulties were so numerous it was soon discarded. The total production of these 11 plants in 1892 was very small; I have not been able to discover reliable figures of production. THAT the copper industry is in serious straits is admitted. So are the lead and zinc industries, and both lead and zinc are tariff protected. Conditions in the Western lead, zinc and silver mining districts are desperate. These are illustrated by the present disastrously low prices of these metals compared with the levels of two and three years ago and by the comparative rates of metal production and the present activity of the western mining camps. The January production of copper was 32.2 per cent of the 1929 average rate, of steel was 32.3 per cent of the 1929 average, while January production of pig iron was only 27.6 per cent of the monthly average of 1929. The copper industry is only one of many industries that are suffering in this tragic depression. It has been exceedingly prosperous and will be prosperous again when business recovers. Its difficulties are not unique and it does not deserve the tariff equivalent of a dole. The burden of subsidizing through an effective tax or tariff the minority group of high-cost mines would be a heavy one on the consuming public of the United States. On the basis of 1929 consumption figures, an effective 5c. tariff would result in an increased copper bill to the country of over $109,000,000, of which the electric manufacturers would contribute $26,000,000, the telephone and telegraph companies $16,000,000, and the automobile manufacturers $14,000,000. And of this total bill, only $33,000,000 would go to those who are urging a tariff and the balance of $76,000,000 would be paid to those who do not admit either its necessity or usefulness under present conditions.

THE subject of fuel-briquetting has attracted much attention on the part of engineers and investors for the past 15 or 20 years, and especially in recent years, during which a number of plants have been built, with more or less commercial and technical success. Our technical literature contains numerous descriptions of certain processes, and discussions of the industry in general. For a history of the development of the art in the United States, and for descriptions of many of the processes which have been tried, reference may be made to the files of our Transactions, and, for more recent information, to a paper by C. T. Malcolmson, read before the First Annual Convention of the International Railway Fuel Association in June, 1909. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. and the Semet-Solvay Co. at Detroit, Mich., which, after a period of long and costly evolution, is now operating satisfactorily on a commercial basis. I believe that it will be of interest to some of our members to have the details of operation, lower-consumption, labor, etc., as worked out on a practical and commercial scale in a going operation. The briquette industry has had a somewhat checkered career in the United States, and much the larger portion of the failures has been due entirely to commercial causes. It seems axiomatic to say that before undertaking the installation of a plant for manufacturing briquettes it is necessary that the local situation should be carefully examined : First, to determine the kind of briquettes, if any, the local market will consume; that is-to say, whether the available fuel-supply is such that briquettes would be a welcome addition, and whether the most promising field is the industrial or the domestic market. The surface tension of solid silver is measured by a refinement of the Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique. The tests were made in a purified helium atmosphere at four different temperatures and various times. The average of the results is y = 1140 + 90 dynes per cm for the range 875° to 932°C. A SUCCESSFUL measurement of the surface tension of solid copper was reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' They performed experiments on copper held in vacuum within 100°C of the melting point. At these temperatures, the creep rate in 5 and 3 mil copper wires was sufficient to permit determination of a balance between the contractile force of surface tension and the extending force of small copper weights joined to the end of the wire specimens. By suspending a series of variously weighted specimens and measuring the change in a gage length during the test, the balancing applied load could be found. This point of zero strain is a measure of the surface tension. The mathematical formulation of this gives: w = r y [1] where w is the weight for zero strain; r, the radius of the wire; and y, the surface tension. CHARLES P. BROOKS Charles P. Brooks, who had been identified with the mining industry in the West since 1874, having served at various times as mining and consulting engineer for most of the largest mining properties in Utah, died Dec. 11, at his home in Salt Lake City, of heart failure, after an illness of about one month. He was a very close business friend of the late Thomas Kearns and David Keith. In recent years he had been closely identified with the Silver King Coalition Mining Co., the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., the Grand Central Mining Co., the Prince Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co., and many other large properties. Mr. Brooks was born in Washingtonville, Orange County, New York, Aug. .21, 1851; he was the son of Charles Edward Brooks and Adeline Cannon Brooks. When 14 years of age he attended school at Chester, N. J., for one term, and accompanied the assistant principal of Chester Academy to New Paltz, N. Y., and finished the school year there. In 1866 he entered Dr. Stiles's school at Deckertown, N. J., and later the Sheffield School at Yale in 1867, where he received the degree of civil engineer with the class of 1870.

The end of the deposits of lake ore is in sight, although not imminent, and unless some new field is discovered, the use of magnetites will be an increasing factor in the iron production of the country. Enormous deposits of magnetic ore in the country that have been practically untouched contain ore of sufficient richness and purity to prolong materially our ore supply without extensive importation of foreign ores. Magnetic ores can be divided into three general classes: Fine un-sintered, or raw ore; raw lumpy ore; fine ore that has been sintered. THE United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is located in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are some 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. The definition of precipitation-hardening1 is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening1.—This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.—Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheating to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (I) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats. Pkecipitation-hardening of Copper-cobalt-beryllium Alloys1.2 The composition of principal interest is that of 2.6 per cent Co, 0.4 per cent Be, 97 per cent Cu. The alloy has been developed commercially and, with certain reasonable precautions, ordinary brass-foundry practice suffices to produce an alloy of high quality. J. H. HEGINBOTHAM, a, metallurgist of the General Engineering Co., talked on "Current Milling Practice at Kirkland Lake," at the December meeting of the Utah Section. The ore is enough alike through the whole district so that some generalizations and comparisons may be made. The question as to whether or not the flotation process should be used in the flowsheet for extracting gold by cyanide solutions is still being vigorously debated, and it will seemingly need some years for a definite answer to be given. Most of the gold is either free, though much of it is finely dispersed in quartz, or occurs with pyrite. At times there may be 2 per cent of telluride compounds in the ore, but the amount of gold telluride present is small and has not been definitely established. It has been shown by Dr. Haultain and others that though gold tellurides may be so finely disseminated that it is necessary to grind the ore exceedingly fine, the compounds themselves are not difficultly soluble. (An increase in temperature helps to dissolve tellurides, and also to settle pulps.) It is likely that if the ore were ground through 400 mesh, practically all of the gold would be soluble. THE indicator cards shown herewith were taken by the writer in June, 1877, from the water-pressure blowing engine of the Longdale Iron Co., at Lucy Selina Furnace, Longdale, Virginia. A description of this engine with figures, and some indicator cards, was published by Washington Jones, Esq., Superintendent of the I. P. Morris Co.,* in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1877, to which those desiring a full account are referred, but for convenience the principal dimensions, etc., are given below. The machine consists of a pair of horizontal directacting blowing engines, connected at right angles to a common fly-wheel shaft. The blowing cylinders are 4 ft. diameter by 5 ft. stroke; the water cylinders were 18 in. diameter by 5 ft. stroke as built. Both water and blowing cylinders are double acting. The water valves are balanced piston valves, 18 in. diameter, moved directly by eccentrics on the fly-wheel- shaft. Great care was taken to have the areas of the ports and passages at least equal to the area of the working piston. The Group IV elements germanium, tin, and lead form nine 1:1 compounds with the Group VI elements sulfur, selenium, and tellurium. This paper reviews the properties of the pseudobinary solid solutions formed by these compounds, including the extent of mutual solid solubility, temperature-composition phase diagrams, transport properties, deviations from stoichiometry, optical properties, and energy band structure. Particular emphasis is placed on the Pbl-xSnxTe and Pb1-xSn,Se alloys with rocksalt structure, because of current interest in these malerials for generating and detecting infrared ,radiation. ThE Group IV elements germanium, tin, and lead form nine 1:1 compounds with the Group VI elements sulfur, selenium, and tellurium. Some of the physical and electronic properties of these compounds, including their melting points1-8 and energy gaps,4'9-12 are listed in Table I. Four compounds (SnTe, PbS, PbSe, and PbTe) have the cubic rocksalt (Bl) structure. At room temperature GeTe has a rhombohedra1 structure closely related to the B1 structure, into which it is transformed at about 400°C. Four compounds (GeS, GeSe, SnS, and SnSe) have the orthorhombic B29 structure. In samples which have not been intentionally doped with impurities, the electrical conductivity is due primarily to electrons or holes produced by the ionization of donor or acceptor lattice defects associated with deviations from stoichiometry. Undoped samples of PbS, PbSe, and PbTe may be either n type or p type, depending on whether they contain excess lead or an excess of the Group VI element, respectively, but only p-type samples of the other compounds have been reported. This paper will review the properties of the pseudo-binary solid solutions formed by the nine 1:l compounds. The topics to be considered include the extent of mutual solid solubility, temperature-composition phase diagrams, transport properties, deviations from stoichiometry, optical properties, and band structure. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Pb]-xSnxTe and Pbl-xSnxSe alloys with B1 structure, which are promising materials for generating and detecting infrared radiation in the 8 to 14 µm atmospheric window and beyond. MUTUAL SOLID SOLUBILITY The extent of mutual solid solubility in the pseudo-binary systems has been investigated for fourteen of the eighteen ternary systems (in which the two terminal compounds have a common element) and for nine of the eighteen quaternary systems. In most cases, X-ray diffraction measurements made at room temperature were used to determine the structure and lattice parameter(s) of the phase(s) present in samples of various compositions prepared by freezing from the melt. In many investigations, including the extensive studies of Krebs and co-workers,13'14 the samples were annealed at elevated temperatures before X-ray measurements were made. In some cases, metallographic examination and thermal analysis have also been employed. The results for the ternary and quaternary systems are summarized in Tables II and III, respectively. (The original references should be consulted for the annealing temperatures.) The solubility of one compound in the other is at least 5 mol pct in all cases, and is often much larger. Complete solid solubility has been observed in all systems so far investigated in which the terminal compounds have the same structure, although in the PbS-PbTe system complete solubility is limited to elevated temperatures. Thus complete solid solubility occurs in five systems where both compounds have the B1 structure (SnTe-PbTe, PbS-PbSe, PbS-PbTe at temperatures above 805°C, PbSe-PbTe, and SnTe-PbSe) and in three where both compounds have the B29 structure (GeS-SnS. GeSe-~n~e-, and SnS-SnSe), as well as in two involving GeTe and a compound with B1 structure (GeTe-SnTe and GeTe-PbTe). On the basis of thermal analysis data, complete solid solubility at sufficiently high temperatures has also been reported for the GeSe-GeTe2 and SnS- pbS22 systems. This seems unlikely, however,

THE origin of the watery vapors of vulcanism has always been an object of interest and speculation to the seismologist, and as theories of the genetic origin of ore-deposits have of late years been pretty well narrowed down to the expiring forces of plutonic action, the same question has had a lively interest for mining engineers and geologists, as is well shown by the discussions of the subject in our Transactions. The important part taken by volcanic emanations in the origin of pegmatites and quartz-veins, described in my paper, Origin of Pegmatite,1 and their latent power to concentrate into useful deposits such scattered gold as occurs in the Hartsel granite, make a discussion of their derivation but a natural third and final step. It is conceded that enormous amounts of vapor accompany volcanism, though perhaps we are apt to forget that steam has 1,700 times the volume of water, besides which the column seen over Vesuvius and other volcanoes is greatly mixed with air; the immensity of such volumes compared with solids and liquids is shown by the experiment of Gautier, who, by heating dessicated granite to 100° C., evolved from it uses 20 times, and steam 90 times, its own volume. Dana appraised the average amount of water left in ordinary rocks as 2.5 per cent. T. M. Read estimated that the Mississippi river carries to the sea annually 150,000,000 tons of rock material. If these Mississippi sediments, as deposited, contained 20 per cent. of water, it would be 600,000,000 cu. ft., or 4,500,000,000 American gallons, annually. Allowing the vapor suspended over a volcanic cone to be mixed with 80 per cent. of air, this amount of water converted into steam would replenish anew, every 9 min., a column 15,000 ft. high, 2,000 ft. in diameter at the base, and 10,000 ft. at the top. Read's estimate is only half of the amount given in a more recent and probably correct one .2

This paper is a resume of some of the accomplishments in direct rolling of strip from molten metal, and a description of some experimental developments in recent years. In all the early developmental work, we used a pair of rolls with a bath of metal between them, maintained by flanges or plates at the ends of the rolls. These flanges produced an excess cooling of the metal and built up enormous pressures at this point as the metal went through the bight of the rolls. Many means were tried for compensating for this excess cooling, such as thickening the strip at the edges, heating the end dams directly or by flowing more of the molten metal against them, leaving an open crotch below the end dam and above the bight of the roll, where the excessive pressures built up could be relieved by some of the metal squeezing out at this point, and so forth. All of these helped somewhat to solve the problem, so that very large heats of many metals melting up to 200°F., having commercially uniform gauges, could be rolled up to 24 in. in width. The rolls were made by mounting heavy rings on heavy shafts, and pressures up to 75,000 lb. per inch in width were used. Cooling of the rolls was generally done by spraying water on the outside surface of the rolls that came in contact with the molten metal. Roll life was commercial with brass, barely satisfactory with copper, and totally impractical with steels. The greatest difficulty encountered in all this work was caused by lack of uniformity in the product, owing to a folding action in the mill. Those who are familiar with the operation of a rolling mill know that a bar entering a mill moves at a lower speed than the peripheral speed of the roll. However, the metal solidifying from a bath in a direct rolling mill is cast at exactly the peripheral speed of the roll. This results in irregular folding of the metal, some irregular remelting of the previously solidified sections, and it is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases to exert enough pressure to weld these folded sections sufficiently into a sound product. In addition to this melange of solid, semisolid and liquid metal in the bath, we know that pressure near the freezing point of any alloy in which the constituents have different melting points—and I believe all of them have—causes the lower-melling-point constituent to be squeezed back until it becomes cold enough to solidify and go through the mill. This segregates all alloys, the segregation increasing with the pressures and the freezing ranges of the metals. Add to these problems the excessive roll-maintenance costs with high-melting-point metals and then, the greatest difficulty of all, the vanity of homo sapiens where a matter of possibly large importance is being considered, and the problems seemed almost insuperable. It was long ago obvious to me that something much more than the size of a corporation's money and self-assuradce was necessary if this process was to be made commercial. I should like to show you first the performance of the only mill we ever really designed and built, to see what might be done with a well constructed mill.
