THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1—The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2—The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3—The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element—the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface. Regardless of the viewpoint adopted as to whether the chemical units comprising the collector film are collector ions or molecules, held either by chemical or physical forces, the writers on flotation theory are in apparent agreement as to the orientation of the chemical units at the mineral surface. Wark and Cox' showed that the contact angle at a stable collector-coated surface in a constant chemical environment is independent of the nature of the mineral and of any resurfacing agent; it depends solely upon the collector used. They showed further that the value of the contact angle increases with the number of carbon atoms in a homologous series of compounds. Taggart, Taylor, and Knoll2 postulated that the collector ion is oriented with the chemically reactive, polar end toward the mineral surface and the non-polar, hydrocarbon-like end toward the liquid phase. In support thereof they cited the abstraction of p-p1 dihydroxydiphenylthiourea and of glycol xanthate8 by galena without a concomitant increase in the contact angle above that of clean galena. It was argued that in these cases the water-repellent layer which normally would be presented to the liquid phase owing to the orientation of the collector ions is overlain by a layer of water-avid groups, the hydroxyl groups. Implicit is the analogous orientation exhibited by a monomolecular layer of an insoluble substance at an air-water interface. It should be pointed out that these facts also are consistent with the concept that the collector units be flat on the surface of the mineral and that the response of the surface to an air bubble is determined by the ratio of the area covered by water-avid groups to the area covered by water-repellent groups; the areas being weighted according to the relative watef-avidity or water-repellency of the groups involved. The disposition of the chemical units of the collector film at the mineral surface has not received the attention it merits. Taggart4 concluded from the observed stoichiometry of the ions entering and leaving a surface that the stoichiometry is obeyed in detail at the surface of the mineral. Thus, in the case of xanthate-coated galena, pairs of xanthate ions are attached to surface lead ions. In the case of chemisorption, Gaudin and Preller postulated an agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum (the mineral surface) with those of the superstratum (collector film); in the case of the physical adsorption their position is not clear. In one place they state "the first type (physical adsorption) does not require any agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum with that of the superstratum" and in another place that "It seems, in fact, as though some slight influence of the substratum is formed even in physical adsorption." The present work shows that in some cases of chemisorption the chemical units of the collector film are in constant surface-bound motion and may not be assigned to any site of the surface, hence there is no permanent association between the chemical units of the film and the atoms or ions of the solid. The physical property of the collector film that is of paramount importance is its surface energy. Although this property is not susceptible to direct experimental determination, the related contact angle is. This paper describes a method to provide identification of particular depths in a borehole through the use of radioactive markers. The correlation of a marker, placed in the wall of a borehole, with known points of the electrical log and with the casing collars in the cased hole permits accurate positioning of tools with respect to a formation, regardless of absolute depth. Such a process is particularly useful in gun perforation of a casing in a well. Technique and equipment are discussed and illustrated. Examples are given of practical application in the field. Introduction During the past decade the search for petroleum has increased the importance of testing zones at depths in wells which have become progressively deeper. The development of new techniques, such as electrical logging, has permitted the identification of producing formations which consist of comparatively thin strata. When thin beds are to be produced at great depths, the problem of positioning tools accurately to place the well in production becomes acute.l Continuous consideration is being given in the petroleum industry towards the improvement of depth measurements in a borehole. The accuracy in absolute depth measurements, whether made in an open or cased hole, whether determined by a cable or a drill pipe, depends upon a number of factors, such as tension, temperature, and calibration. For example, the effects of tension from the weight of 10,000 ft of drill pipe and the thermal expansion of this length . of pipe, where its average temperature has increased SO"', will Produce an elongation as much as 8 ft.2 The effects Of such factors can be minimized through the use of care in depth measurements, the application of corrections based on experience, and continuous calibration or checking. The fact that different methods and different tools are used to determine the depths of formations in wells will sometimes give rise to a difference between measurements. It is evident that an important requirement in a well is the ability to locate at will any subsurface point. While absolute depth measurements have ion in recent years, it is reassuring to have other means to verify, for example, that a casing is perforated at a particular place with reference to a zone within a formation. Such a check on measurements may be had by placing a reference marker at a point known with respect to the electrical log of the borehole. That point is usually chosen to be in proximity to the 'One to be perforated. Thus, only short in depth measurements are made and any inaccuracy becomes very small and of minor importance' The use of reference markers located at fixed points predetermined in each zone where future operations are contemplated enables the operator to position any tool

The cause and the effect of disposing of tailings water from sulfide ore milling operation were examined. Dissolved metallic ions as well as dissolved sulfur-oxygen compounds (polythionates) can prove injurious to life in water streams. Polythionates originate in alkaline flotation circuits and may cause a severe drop in the pH of stream waters. It is proposed that a suitable "aging" period be allotted to tailings water to ensure complete conversion of polythionates to sulfate prior to neutralization and clarification treatment. Discharging alkaline solid-free tailings water without aging will cause downstream acidification. Artificial oxidation of tailings water can be economical only if the concentration of thiosulfate in solution is low. When the concentration is high, it is possible to reduce the concentration greatly by first acidifying the solution, because at a pH below 4 thiosulfate in water reacts to produce a precipitate of elemental sulfur and higher order polythionates. The residual polythionates can then be oxidized at great savings by natural aging or by chemicals such as ozone, chlorine, or peroxide. Chlorine may be an economical reagent for converting polythionates to sulfuric acid but the residual organo-chlorinated compounds can prove to be toxic to aquatic life. Ozone and hydrogen peroxide which do not leave a residue are preferred oxidizers.

R. U. Jackson (Conveyor vs. Track Haulage, P. 866) is the author of a previous work on conveyor systems, which was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Section of the AIME in December 1951. He has worked for the Carnegie Steel Co., Koppers Co., Fairmont Mining Machinery Co., and the Hewitt-Robins, Inc., the Robins Conveyor Div., for the past 30 years, as engineer, district manager, and manager of the mining div. Jackson is a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, and was born in Steelton; Pa. His present residence is in Clifton, N. J., where in his spare time he devotes himself to hiking and photography interests. F. S. White (Co-author, Solids Fluidization Applied to Lime Burning, P. 903) is a Washington University, St. Louis, Graduate, who now lives in Stockbridge, Mass. He served as a technical apprentice at Mobile, Ala., for the Aluminum Ore Co., and after four years went to Bauxite, Ark, as technical superintendent of calcination and precipitation. After a year and a half, he became technical and operating superintendent of the sintering plant. White also worked for the Dorr Co., and is now with the New England Lime Co. serving as assistant to the president. For relaxation he collects stamps and plays the piano.

At the meeting after the dinner, the Chairman called attention to the work of Mr. Hoover in Belgium and spoke briefly of the assistance which' could be given him through the Belgian Kiddies, Ltd. Mr. Alonzo Kinyon read a paper on "Burring Powdered Coal" which so interested the members that many of them participated in the long discussion which followed. Prof. Harry B. Pulsifier then described the metallurgical plants about Chicago. He mentioned briefly the equipment and interesting features of 30 metallurgical plants of importance and stated that there were also 200 foundries in the district. He said that when number, size, quality and diversity of the plants are considered, the Chicago District is justified in calling itself the greatest metallurgical center on earth. Although several recent papers have shown that equilibrium contact angle in dodecylamine solution-quartz systems can often be directly correlated with flotation behavior, it appears that under conditions of relatively high amine strength and pH such a correlation can't be made. Under these conditions, when there are precipitated amine dipoles present, it appears that a dynamic contact angle formed immediately after introduction of fresh gas bubbles into the system is also of importance. The dynamic angle decreases in magnitude as a function of time. Apparently the decrease is the result of changes in interfacial tensions (liquid-gas and solid-gas) as a function of time. Dynamic angles of the type described can't be observed in trimethyldodecylammonium chloride solution-quartz systems. Several recent papers1-3 have shown quite conclusively that contact angle data can often be correlated directly with flotation behavior in cationic surfactant solution-quartz systems. At the same time, Iwasaki, Cooke, and Colombo4 have shown data for a dodecylammonium chloride solution-goethite system where, in the vicinity of pH 12 and a collector concentration of 10" M, 100% flotation occurs when equilibrium contact angle appears to be zero. A clue to this discrepancy can be found in the work by smith2 who reported the occurrence of dynamic, time dependent, contact angles in a quartz-dodecyl-amine solution system at relatively high pH values and at surfactant concentrations greater than or equal to 10-4 M. It was found that under these conditions, if a fresh bubble was brought into contact with a properly conditioned and polished quartz surface, a large angle was obtained. The large angle, however, instantly started to diminish in magnitude, sometimes to a smaller stable angle and sometimes to its complete disappearance. Also, if the bubble was preconditioned for some minutes (or sometimes even seconds) in the same amine solution, the smaller or sometimes zero stable angle was obtained when the bubble was brought in contact with the quartz surface. One is immediately led to the thought that perhaps it is these dynamic angles when they exist, not stable angles, that are of primary importance in flotation. In a constant-load creep test, if the density of nlobile dislocations is assumed constant for strains exceeding that corvesponding to the minimum creep rate, it is shown that the creep rate may be approximated by the equation where E is the nominal strain, o0. is the initial stress, and a' the stress fov unit dislocation velocity. The constant C contains the mean density of mobile dislocations and n is a measure of the stress sensitivity of dislocation celocity. This equation is shoum to be applicable to published data on an alloy steel and on nickel. The degree of plastic instability and hence the creep ductility is dependent on the calue of n for these materials. When instability becomes gross and local macroscopic necking occurs, the assumptions are no longer valid. On the basis of this equation, and the strain-time relation derived from it, a method of predicting the creep behavior at different stresses is suggested. MOst analyses of creep data have been concerned with time-dependent transient creep or time-independ- ent secondary creep in constant-stress tests. The far more widely used constant-load test has been neglected in terms of a mechanistic approach. In general, since the strains involved are usually small, the same laws for transient creep may be applied to both types of tests. However, there is no steady-state creep in a constant-load test since the stress increases continuously. Any apparent steady state observed on a strain-time plot is either fortuitous or illusory, and is generally revealed as a continuously varying creep rate on a carefully constructed strain rate vs time plot.* Transient creep may be understood in terms of a simple differential equation representing the change in mobile dislocation density with time:' where p is the density of mobile dislocations. The first term on the right is related to first-order kinetics of dislocation multiDlication and the second to second-order kinetics of exhaustion. Fullers' earth is a clay-like substance, which has the property of decolorizing or clarifying oils. An ultimate chemical analysis shows it to differ from most ordinary clays in having usually a high percentage of combined water and a low amount of alumina. There is probably a large amount of hydrous silica present. Fullers' earth possesses little or no plasticity, and in order to work properly has to be ground very fine. A chemical analysis is of little value at present in determining its quality; only a practical test suffices. Up to about two years ago all of the fullers' earth used in this country was imported from England; but about that time deposits were discovered in Florida, "† and since then rumors of its occurrence have been coming from all parts of the country. Next to the Florida deposits of fullers' earth, those of South Dakota are the most extensive thus far discovered in this country. The earth was first discovered near Fairburn, Custer county, and other deposits have since been prospected at Argyle, Minnekahta and other localities. Fairburn.—One of the first deposits located and opened up is five miles southeast of Fairburn, Custer county. ARTHUR KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬On p. 2275 I find a quotation from Mr. Thompson regarding the fountains of the Baku field. I have seen a large number of these gushers or fountains. In every case where unusual amounts of sand were produced the wells caved in and shut off in a few clays and were an absolute loss Very often the formation had caved so far up as to allow the water to enter the oil strata, and not only was the well lost but the ground for many acres around the well was useless for drilling purposes because the disturbed ground had allowed the gas and oil to dissipate and the water to enter. On p. 2268, Mr. Thompson is again quoted regarding the Balakhany field. If the text is consulted further, it will be found that the oil at Balakhany is heavy only in contradistinction to the Bibi Eibat, field. The gravity of the oil at Balakhany is from 28 to 32. Also, it must be noted that the illustration is taken from the conditions in the older part of the field. This field was first chilled 40 years ago, and was a worn-out field 15 years ago. The wells which produce sand are wells in which the casings are practically gone and the formations are full of water. The sand must be bailed from these wells because the clays from the upper stratum have caved into the wells and are obstructing the passage of oil. On p. 2262 is the statement that the Russian wells cannot be pumped on account of the large amounts of free sand produced. They have never tried pumping in the Baku field to any extent. Wherever tried, it has proven a great success. If we take the author's theories as correct and wish to put them into practice, it would first be necessary to consider a few figures. Let us assume that we produce oil and sand together in the proportion in which they exist in the productive strata. It is not uncommon to have wells in the California field which are not gushers, but which, by pumping, produce 1,000 bbl. per clay the first 100 clays.

The Tintic mining districts of central Utah com- prise one of the major silver-lead producing areas in the United States. Ore valued at nearly $450 million has been produced from these districts since the initial discoveries, in 1869, of veins cutting the Silver City monzonite stock. Subsequent production from the famous manto-type "ore runs", which characterize the Main Tintic district, was followed during the past 40 years by discovery of the blind orebodies of the East Tintic district, including the famous Tintic Standard mine and the most recent discovery, the Burgin mine, currently being brought to full production by Kennecott Copper. The occurrence of blind orebodies of exceptional size and grade in both the Main and East Tintic districts has made this area a field laboratory of major importance for the study of geochemical dispersion halos and alteration features associated with known ore, and has led to the discovery of additional concealed orebodies. The larger share of the basic data-gathering and interpretation has been done by members of the U.S. Geological Survey who have been studying the Tintic mining areas since before the turn of the century. These studies have been supplemented and expanded by the geological staffs of the local operating mining companies, by exploration geologists and by students.

An experimental study of the variation of transverse-rupture strength with composition Anexperimentaland grain studysize has shown that the strength reaches a maximum for values of the mean free path between carbide particles of 0.3 to 0.6 microns. The fracture oforiginates in and proceeds through the carbide grains mainly. Impact strength and hardness also were recorded. MOST of the physical properties of sintered carbides vary linearly with composition. The transverse-rupture strength, however, shows a unique behavior. As the amount of binder metal is varied from 6 to 25 pct by weight, the strength at first increases; then, between 15 and 20 pct Co, it reaches a maximum of nearly 400,000 psi, and finally decreases with further additions of binder metal. This behavior of the transverse-rupture strength has been reported, among others, by Englel and Sandford and Trent.' The significance of these observations has not been discussed in the literature. That it may be of more than specific importance is indicated by the very similar variation of strength with composition encountered in other systems sintered in the presence of a liquid phase, such as Tic-Ni3 and Fe-Cu.' Experimental Details All compacts were prepared and sintered according to normal industrial practice. The average diameter of WC grains and the mean free path between grains were measured on metallographically prepared samples by a method of linear and planar analysis sing the relations where d is the average diameter of dispersed grains; Nl is the number of noncontiguous grains intersected on a metallographic plane by a line of unit length; N, is the number of noncontiguous grains per unit area; P is the mean free path between grains of dispersed phase; and f is the volume fraction of dispersed phase. Approximately 1000 grains were counted on each sample. For each composition d2 was plotted against P, the resulting straight lines serving as a check on the measurements. The distribution curves of the WC powders of different average diameters were homologous, and no attempt was made to influence the grain size by blending powders, adjusting the sintering conditions, or otherwise altering the particle size distribution. Densities were measured by differential weighings in air and water. The degree of densification did not vary consistently with either composition or grain size. The density is influenced by slight amounts of impurities, specifically by 0.1 to 0.2 pct Fe which enters the powders during ball milling. As an illus- -tration of the experimental variations, a number of measured densities are listed in Table I. They are expressed in percentage of theoretical density, as calculated from the published X-ray densities of WC and Co.' For the purpose of determining the transverse-rupture strength, rectangular test specimens (3/16x 3/8x3/4 in.) were broken by loading at the center of a 9/16 in. span. The average strength of five or more samples is reported for each composition and grain size. The compacts were ground on two parallel surfaces only. The load was applied at an average rate of 6,800 psi per sec. Since the elongation after fracture of the alloys is very small, it was assumed that the compacts deform elastically to failure and the fracture stress was calculated by the conventional beam formula. The data for one alloy are presented in Table II as an example of the results and scattering ranges encountered. The precision of the test, as measured by the average difference between duplicates, is of the order of 15,000 psi. The results are strictly comparable only to compacts prepared and tested in the manner described and of similar chemical composition and grain size characteristics. Unnotched Charpy specimens were used for impact testing. Each point represents the average of 3 to 20 samples, the larger number being used in an attempt to determine the influence of grain size. Considerable scatter was encountered, the range from lowest to highest value often amounting to 30 pct of the impact strength. The hardness is reported as a Ra reading, using a 60 kg load with diamond brale indenter. Compositions are given in weight percent.

The Cr-Ni system was investigated between 900" and 1400°C and 45 to 100 wt pct Cr. The Cr-Fe system was studied between 1200" and 1385°C and 70 to 100 wt pct Cr. Powdered alloy compacts were produced from high-purity chromium, nickel, and iron poulders. The compacts were sintered in an argon atmosphere and then machined into small, 0.030-in. diam cylindrical specimens. These were then heated by induction in the high-temperature X-ray diJfractwn camem under a helium atmosphere and irradiated with copper Ka radiation. From the results of the high-temperature X-ray diffraction patterns it can be concluded that chromium exists only in the bcc form, and that no eutectoid reaction occurs in the Cr-Ni system in the temperature interval 900" to 1400°C. The X-ray diffraction patterns are in agreement with the Cr-Ni phase diagram of Bechtoldt and Vacher, and Williams. It is possible that chromium undergoes one or more allotropic transformations between room temperature and its melting point. Most of the evidence was gathered from the study of the chromium-rich ends of the Cr-Ni and Cr-Fe binary systems. All the investigations rely heavily on indirect methods: thermal analysis, electrical resistivity, and micro-graphic inspection of quenched samples. In the present work the chromium-rich side of the Cr-Ni and Cr-Fe binary systems is studied, using high-temperature X-ray diffraction techniques. Thus the coexistent structures can be observed directly at temperature. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS ~ansenl shows two possible Cr-Ni phase diagrams 1) a simple eutectic [Liquid =a-Cr(bcc) + y-Ni(fcc)], 2) a eutectic [Liquid+ P-Cr(fcc) + y-Ni(fcc)] and euctectoid [p-Cr(fcc) ==a-Cr(bcc) + yNi(fcc)]. The latter is based on the work of Grant and co-workers.2 Stein and rant'" placed the eutectoid composition at 1215°C and 68 wt pct Cr; their diagram is shown in Fig. l. Similarly, Sully3 also discusses the two proposed diagrams. Price and Grant,4 working on an isothermal section of the Cr-Ni- Fe ternary diagram at 1300°C, made no mention of a ß-chromium phase (fcc). The ß-chromium structure was also reported by Misencik 5 in the Cr-Nb(Cb) system. Williams 6 studied the Cr-Ni system using precipitation techniques. His work included the chromium and nickel solvus lines below 1250°C. He reported no ß structure nor any eutectoid reaction. The solvus lines which he produced were very similar to those of Jette, et al 7 below 1000°C. He concluded that Grant and coworkers2 had misinterpreted their data, and that effects which they had reported were actually due to the rapid and extensive precipitation of the nickel-rich phase. Bechtoldt and vacher8 used sintered powdered alloy compacts in an attempt to find the ß phase. They used metallographic and room-temperature X-ray diffraction techniques and also failed to detect the fcc chromium phase. They attributed the low slope of the chromium solvus at approximately 1150°C as the probable cause of the abundant precipitation obtained. They also stated that the precipitation was the probable cause for the abrupt discontinuities in the thermal analysis and electrical resistivity data which led to the conclusion that a eutectoid reaction existed. Fig. 1 also shows their diagram. Grigor'ev and coworkers9 investigated the polymorphic changes of chromium in the Cr-Ni phase diagram. Using standard microstructural and thermal analysis techniques, they published a phase diagram which contained five polymorphic forms of pure chromium and four eutectoid reactions. They stated that the room-temperature bcc chromium transformed to a fcc structure at 930°C, to bcc at 1300°C, to hcp at 1650oC, and then finally to bcc at 1830°C. The eutectoid reactions were placed at 850°, 960o, 1140°, and 1220°C. Also to be noted was the fact that the uppermost phase, the bcc above 1830°C, was different from the upper phase of Grant and coworkers,2 the fcc above 1840°C. THE ARGONAUT' mill stands at the crest and spreads down the western slope' of a hill, which incidentally covers the' outcrop of the Argonaut vein' at this point. The collar of the main shaft of the mine is situated on the eastern slope of the same hill 120 ft. below the highest ?point. The present mill, built in 1916, was designed to treat 250 tons per 24-hr. day. This capacity has not been attained recently owing to the inability of the mine to produce enough ore while extensive development and underground construction were under way. At present, however, the mine is more than able to take care of the mill requirements.

Laboratory data on bubble point pressures and reservoir volume factors have been correlated as functions of solution gas-oil ratio, calculated gas gravity of the pentanes-and-lighter fraction of the entire fluid, differential residual oil gravity, and reservoir temperatures. INTRODUCTION Several correlations of crude oil properties have appeared in the literature. D. L. Katz4 in 1942 presented five methods of predicting oil shrinkage. these being of decreasing accuracy for decreasing amounts of information available. M. B. Standing- in 1947 published three correlations of laboratory flash vaporization data of California crudes. From values of GOR (gas-oil ratio), gas gravity, liquid gravity, and temperature, his correlations will predict bubble point pressure, formation volumes of bubble point liquids, and two-phase formation volumes. Curtis and Brinkley2 in 1949 presented several correlations. From the gas-oil ratio, an approximation of reservoir volume factor and barrels of condensate recoverable per barrel of reservoir space may be obtained; along with liquid gravity and reservoir temperature, the GOR will allow prediction of bubble point pressure. These last cor- relations seem to be more qualitative than quantitative. Generally, laboratory bottom hole sample tests furnish information on solution gas-oil ratios, residual oil gravities. bubble point pressures, viscosities of oils, liquid shrinkages, and occasionally gas gravities. Each of these data has its own applications and use in reservoir engineering calculations. The particular uses of correlated bottom hole sample data are found in (1 Providing a basis for obtaining estimates of formation crude properties in fields where bottom hole sampling is impractical or impossible. (2) Greatly reducing the time in obtaining the desired information. (3) Determining the applicability of the results from various bottom hole samples to particular field problems. (4) Avoiding, in many cases, the uncertainties of sampling by replacing it with an element over which greater control can be exercised. (5) Permitting use of preliminary field data in application of production procedures before a bottom hole sample can be obtained and analyzed in the laboratory. (6) Serving as a check on data which may appear out of line. (7) Estimating for a particular type crude the appropriate equilibrium constants by working backward from the bubble point pressure. (8) Estimating original or other past history properties of reservoirs that were not sampled in the past. PROCEDURE Application of the published correlations4,6 to Stanolind laboratory data indicated that the general scheme presented by Standing" could give dedrable results if changes were made in parameter positions and scales. The correlation curves were drawn with all the variables having consistent gradations except the temperature increments which were drawn in to best fit the data. The variables from available Stanolind laboratory data are defined below: (1) Gas-oil Ratio: Gas is liberated at reservoir temperature by differential vaporization (or rather by a series of flashes, approaching differential vaporization) and measured at atmospheric pressure and temperature, at which the compressibility factor is assumed to be unity. The oil is the residual liquid remaining after the pressure has been reduced to atmospheric. For the gas-oil ratio both volumes are corrected to standard conditions of 14.7 psia and 60°F. (2) Gas Gravity: It was decided to arbitrarily divide the hydrocarbons of the entire bottom hole sample into pentanes-and-lighter and hex-anes-and-heavier, and use a calculated gas gravity of the pentanes-and-lighter for a correlating variable. (Sample calculation is shown in Table 111.) (3) Liquid Gravity: This is the API gravity of the residual liquid from the differential vaporization. The gravity is measured at room temperature and corrected to 60°F.

9.4-1. Basic principles. DESCRIPTION AND BASIC FUNCTIONS. The concept of inclined skip haulage is not new. The basic idea has been in use at least 400 years. The system is essentially a steeply inclined railway utilizing a hoist to pull the skips to the top or intermediate positions. Inclined skip haulage is often justified where high lifts would require long hauls for other haulage systems. The basic system types are as follows: 1. Single skip, single drum. This system is a single car pulled by a simple hoist system. 2. Balanced skip, single drum. A system utilizing two cars (skips on cables)--one overwound, one underwound-on a single drum. The dead weight of one skip and cable balances the dead weight of the other. As one skip ascends the other descends between two fixed points. 3. Balanced skip, double drum. This system is an elaboration of system No. 2, except the drums may be disengaged from one another to permit the skips to service various loading and dumping points. The preceding are major classifications subject to numerous variations. These variations may be in the skipway, skip design, loading methods, or unloading methods. A few examples follow: 1. The skipway may be standard or special railroad, an overhead monorail or cable, or a ramp for rubber tired vehicles. 2. The skip, per se, may be of varying dumping arrangements (side, bottom, etc.) or could be the box of the vehicle hauling to the skip. 3. Loading may be accomplished directly from the service unit to skip, through an intermediate loading device (e.g., a pocket), or into bins which feed the skip. Loading may be at more than one point. 4. Unloading of the skip can be simple or complex as required. Dumping may be to the haulage unit, to bins and feeders, or to a crusher and conveyor system. Dumping may take place at more than one point.
