S. E. MADDIGAN*—I think Mr. Yen should be complimented on doing a very excellent and a very comprehensive piece of work. I was particularly pleased to note the use of X rays in a somewhat less tedious technique than pole figures. In the past I think many workers have been diverted away from the use of X rays in such investigations because of the large amount of work involved in pole figures if one is dealing with a great number of specimens. The same thing, I think, applies to the determination of orientations by counting of twins which is also a very tedious procedure; as a result several papers which have otherwise been of excellent quality have depended upon etching techniques for determination of orientation. The present paper indicates that the results reported in those previous papers were correct, but I think the use of etching techniques alone is a rather shaky basis for setting up theories in the literature. W. M. BALDWIN, JR.*—This discussion will be a short note of correction and apology. In my discussion of Brick, Martin and Angier's paper I incorrectly reported the orientation of phosphorus deoxidized copper annealed at temperatures. When I learned that Mr. Yen was preparing the present paper I asked that he correct this previous error, which he most graciously consented to do. However, through my ambiguity the correction noted on p. 59 of Mr. Yen's paper is still not the proper one. For this I take full responsibility. The orientation which I observed in phosphorus deoxidized copper at high temperatures is the (112) [111] which agrees with the pole figure given in Fig 8a, on p. 65 of Mr. Yen's paper. Our observations were made on the basis of twin counts rather than X ray determinations and therefore serve as an independent confirmation of Mr. Yen's data. M. K. I have thought it well to lay before the Institute some account of the Vallecillo Mines, now, I believe, the only paying ones in American hands in northeastern Mexico, including the States of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. The authentic history of these mines dates from their ownership by an American Company in the year 1851, when they were bought by the Vallecillo Silver Mining Company of New York. They had been worked before by the Spaniards, but had been abandoned for many years, on account of the heavy expense of drainage and the constant incursions of the Indians. The company commenced work with several well-known New York capitalists among its stockholders, and had a large fund of both money and enthusiasm. The first point of attack was at a shaft on a mine known as the Jesus Maria, which had the most favorable traditions. Extensive buildings were put up, and two sets of pumps were successively tried. After the second pump, with a steam-cylinder 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet stroke and a plunger 20 inches in diameter, had failed to do more than hold the water, with infinite labor, at the 250 feet level, and after a thorough exploitation of the whole mine above that level had failed to yield more than some $30,000 worth of ore, it was resolved to abandon the effort. ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally. Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan," show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision, using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.' However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: 3_____________________ fB = 9.20.vV.vn. (n-1).(n+2)/8 [I] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsym-metric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system of one degree of freedom can be applied: fP = -1/2-vE/m [2] Here fp is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: t, = 2/f = nvm/E [3] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. THE statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Me Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. ½ in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5° B., flashing in open test at 199° F. The oil is heated to about 200° F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 lb. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-oz. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and "dog houses? to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent.

Freeport Indonesia, Incorporated produces 180,000 tons per year (200,000 STPY) of 32% copper concentrate. A 111 kilometer (69 mile) pipeline transports the concentrate slurry to the sea coast. Rheology characteristics of the concentrate slurry must be monitored continuously to assure that the pipeline does not plug and that mini- mum degradation of the pipeline occurs. Factors affecting the rheobgy include particle size, percent solids, pH, and reagent additions. This paper includes a general pipeline description, slurry rheology factors affecting operations, and the problems encountered and their subsequent resolution. Six years successful operation of the worlds longest copper concentrate slurry pipeline has provided a unique insight into slurry behavior.

A statistical method for determining simultaneously some of the basic geometrical characteristics of porous media such as porsity, specific surface* mean pore width, mean grain thickness and absolute permeability is presented. The proposed method is characterized by its simplicity and the minimum amount of laboratory equipment that it requires. The experimental procedure used to evaluate the various geometrical characteristics is based 'pan the 'surface analysis Of a a In view of this fact the app1icability Of the method is limited to homogeneous and isotropic materials. INTRODUCTION The behavior of a fluid flowing through a porous medium depends, among other things, upon the internal geometry of the medium; hence the importance of developing efficient methods to determine the geometrical properties of porous materials. This paper describes a statistical method to determine simultaneously some of the basic geometrical properties of porous materials such as porosity, specific surface, mean pore width, mean grain thickness and absolute permeability. The mathematical formulation has been developed that the data required to calculate the various geometrical characteristics of a sample can be easily measured by analyzing a section of the sample with an evenly spaced grid. THEORY A simple way of obtaining information about the internal geometry of a porous material is to throw a point at random over a cross-section of a sample. l-Through this procedure the porosity can be detemined.l,2 By considering that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, and that the point is dropped many times, the porosity 4 is given by where N is the total number of times the point is thrown and n is he number of times the point falls within pore areas. Another simple manner of analyzing the structural characteristics of a porous material is to superimpose an arbitrarily long line on a cross-section so that its length is evenly distributed over the surface area. Through this procedure the porosity can also be determined. If L is the total length of the line, and 1 is the sum of the lengths of the line segments within void spaces, the porosity is given by 4 = —.1.............. (2) The advantage of this type of analysis is that geometrical characteristics other than porosity can be obtained. Thus, if c represents the number of intersections between the line and the perimeter of pores, it can be shown3 that the specific surface, defined as he surface area of pores per unit bulk volume, is given by To give a proper description of the internal geometry of a porous medium, it is necessary to define quantities that characterize the notions of pore size and grain size. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of porous materials, it is difficult to give exact geometrical definitions of what is meant by the ConCePtS of "poresl' and "grains", especially when dealing with consolidated materials. Never theless, one often talks about the "size of pores" and the "size of grains" without defining accurately the terms. A possible solution to this problem follows. Assume that an arbitrarily long line is placed on a section of a sample so that the line is evenly distributed over the surface area (see Fig. 1). 1n a system like this, each line segment within a void space will be, by definition, the pore width in a given location and direction. A rotating disk of iron precipitant in a high temperature batch reactor has been used to study the kinetics of precipitation of nickel from low concentration aqueous solutions. Under inert atmosphere conditions, for temperatures up to 150°C, the rate of nickel deposition at pH25°C of 5 to 6 is controlled both by the rate at which nickel ions reach the surface and the rate of chemical reaction at the surface. However, the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere above the reacting system increases the nickel deposition rate dramatically. It is suggested that under the experimental conditions used, hydrogen atoms are adsorbed on both the iron and nickel, thus reducing the number of sites available for the cementation reaction. Oxygen acts as a depolarizer for hydrogen.

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. In July 1041, the Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nevada, began a study of methods of producing magnesium metal from magnesium oxide, with particular emphasis upon the direct use of magnesium oxide in a molten chloride electrolyte. The program was extended to include pilot-plant study of chemical methods for the preparation of pure magnesia from dolomites and magnesites. Preliminary work on the production of magnesia from dolomite was done with the cooperation of Kobert D. Pike and the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co. These investigatipns included a cooperative arrangement whereby the Bureau tested certain steps of the Harbison-Walker-Pike process. The process finally developed by the Bureau includes the precarbonation mixing step of the H.W.P. flowsheet prepared by Mr. Pike. Two magnesium-reduction plants using MgO as a source of magnesium were being constructed in the West, and they enormously stimulated interest in various dolomite deposits as possible sources of the magnesia needed by them. This paper describes one phase of this program—the operation of a pilot plant for producing cell-grade magnesia from dolomite from Sloan, Nevada. The process developed for this purpose is an adaptation of a well-known process first proposed by Clossonl and modified by others,2"1 involving the use of calcium chloride and carbon dioxide. It is based on the following chemical reactions: MgCl2 + Ca(OH)2 = CaCl2 + Mg(OH)2 [1] Mg(OH)4 + CaCU + CO2 = MgCl2 + CaCO, + H2O [2] The first reaction proceeds almost completely to the right because of the much greater solubility of calcium hydroxide as compared with magnesium hydroxide. Under equilibrium conditions, when only the four components shown in reaction I are involved, the ratio of magnesium to calcium in solution, according to solubility-product relationship, will be: This reaction is the basis of present commercial processes for recovering magnesium from sea water and dolomite. The second reaction is, in effect, a reversal of the first reaction produced by adding COz. This reaction also proceeds nearly to completion, the solubility relationship being: Ca where P indicates partial pressure of COz, in atmospheres.

Points out differences between the new, more liberal, law passed by the Colombian Congress and the law passed in 1919, gives a few facts about the pipe-line concession granted to a Canadian company, and tells of new drilling developments. PROBABLY the most important development in the Colombian oil situation during the past year was the passage by Congress of a new petroleum law, which went into effect Jan. 31, 1923. The principal points of interest in which this new law changes or improves the previous one are as follows: Law 120 of 1919 provided that one person or corporation could not acquire more than three exploitation zones. of 5000 ha. each, and royalties were based on a sliding scale, to wit: 6 per cent. royalty on lands 400 km., or more, from the ocean; 8 per cent. on lands 200 but not over 400 km. from the ocean, and 10 per cent. royalty on lands located less than 200 km. from the ocean. Rentals were fixed at 10 centavos per hectare for the first year; 20 centavos for the second year; 50 centavos, third year, and $1 (one peso) yearly thereafter. Under this law the term of the lease was fixed at 20 years and, at the discretion of the government, could be extended for 10 years additional. After the expiration of the lease and its corresponding extension, the machinery and other material placed upon the property would vest in the government. A bond of 20,000 pesos was also required of the lessee to guarantee faithful performance of his contract.

Production of oil in Oklahoma during 1927 amounted to 273,256,900 bbl. (Table l), an increase of nearly 100,000,000 bbl. over the previous year. All of the major fields declined with the exception of those of the Seminole district which produced 136,105,000 bbl., almost one-half of the total production of the state. Because of this large new production, most of the development in the state during the year took place in that district. The Seminole City pool located in T.-9-N., R.-6-E., was the first of these pools to be developed. The Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co. brought in the first well in this field in March, 1926, for 1100 bbl. This well is located in Sec. 24-T.-9-N., R-6-E., and produced from the Hunton lime reached at depth of 3900 ft. The first Wilcox production was developed by the Independent Oil & Gas Co. and R. S. Garland in Sec. 26, T.-9-N, R-6-E. This well was being drilled for production in the Hunton lime but was dry in this horizon and was deepened to the Wilcox sand in July, 1926, and at the total depth of 4069 ft. developed a maximum production of 8000 bbl. daily. It held up in wonderful manner and was the cause of not only the development of this pool but the prospecting of the whole district for the Wilcox sand. This led to the discovery of the other major pools in that district. Seminole City pool reached a peak production of 264,500 bbl. on February 22, 1927, and slowly declined so that by December it had a daily average of 56,200 bbl. from 321 wells. The second pool in this district to be discovered was the Searight pool which was discovered by F. J. Searight et al. in Sec. 33, T-10, R-6, in April, 1926. The first well was drilled to the Hunton lime encountered at 4115 ft., and came in for 1300 bbl. daily. During August, 1926, the second well was drilled on the same farm through the Hunton lime to the Wilcox sand which was encountered at 4360 ft. It came in for an initial production of 4000 bbl. daily. This started active drilling in this field for the Wilcox sand. The field had a peak production of 40,621 bbl. on June 15, 1927, and declined to a daily average of 22,300 bbl. from 73 wells during December.

AT the meeting of the Institute in New York,, in February, 1880,* I described a process of determining sulphur in metallic sulphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The process, as then described, is as follows : A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromine is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a :little more sodium hydrate. The pulverized mineral or coal is moistened with 25 c.c. of this solution and heated, then hydrochloric acid is added cautiously to just acid reaction. This operation is repeated with another 25 c.c. of the alkaline solution, and again rendered acid. The mixture should be kept hot.
