The awesome destructive power of known and projected weapons of war presages a new need for geologists and engineers, who may be called upon to locate vital industry underground, thereby protecting it from sky-borne destruction. The Corps of Engineers is now conducting special tests to establish design standards covering the general field of underground installations as well as surveys a of construction methods and the operational hazards connected with such plants. National planning must dictate a policy that is either tactical, where surface manufactured parts; are stored underground and during art emergency assembled, or operational with both the manufacturing and assemblage completed in subsurface plants. Both plans of operation require the use of subterranean plants. Relocation of vital plants underground will probably involve only a small percentage of the production capacity of this nation. The cost of rebuilding in new location will obviously limit its adoption

THE rolling process may be considered as a case of a nonhomogeneous plastic flow. In such a heterogeneous deformation there is no direct general solution, and the plastic deformation varies from point to point as a function of the coordinates. It is practicable to determine these plastic strains only at the conclusion of the rolling process, and the local strains can be studied by observing the deformations produced in a suitably placed grid system. Strains at the surface of a bar after rolling have been reported by MacGregor and Coffin,' but the strain distributions within the bar have not been previously observed. Siebel² has investigated the plastic deformations resulting from wire-drawing by splitting the wire along its axis, milling a grid coordinate system on the inner plane surfaces, and binding the .wire together so that it would pull through a die as a single unit. This method was possible because of the rotational symmetry of the die. In the rolling process, however, such a system was not readily applicable. This paper describes another method of including a grid system, and reports some preliminary data on the plastic rolling strains within a square bar. Experimental Procedure 2.1 mm wide (144 network squares per sq in.) was punched from a thin lead sheet with a steel die and supported in a brass mold by thin copper wires. Pure tin was then poured around the grid to form a solid bar, with the network securely imbedded at. a given position. This bar was then machined to a square 15.2 mm (0.60 in.) wide, and then radiographed. The lead grid was quite adherent and sufficiently ductile to follow the deformation of the bar faithfully. The network lines also remained sharp enough to maintain a high radiographic contrast, and the tin bar, with the grid included, could withstand considerable deformation at room temperature without splitting at the interface. In order to fill the mold, it was necessary to cast the tin at 260-280°C and during pouring the lead grid was supported at short intervals to prevent warping. Some shrinkage cavities were encountered, but only bars which were free of shrinkage in the network region were used. This method is similar to the one employed by Steinberg" in an investigation of the strain distribution in a tensile specimen. Before rolling, the machined bars were radiographed in two directions to obtain accurate initial dimensions of each square and to observe whether the grid was straight and correctly positioned. The rolling was performed in a small hand mill with 2 in. diam rolls at room temperature, and a 20 pct reduction based on the original height was employed. The rolls were clean and no lubricant was used. Halfway through the bar, at the center of the network, the rolls were reversed and the bar extracted. These bars were then radiographed again

When an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy is nitrogemted at 500ºC with a gus tnixture (NH3-H2) in which the nitrogen activity has been kept Lou] enough to avoid the formation of iron nitride, a two-phase alloy is generuled which consists of AlN particles and a ferrite phase cotaining a heavy network of dislocations. The amount of nitrogen contained in such an alloy, when equilibrated with the nitrogenating atmosphere, far exceeds both that needed to satisfy the normal solution requirements of a Fe and that needed to convert all of the aluninuwi to AlN. This excess nitrogen is accounted for as being trapped on dislocations, adsorbed at the ferrite -AlN interface, and as an en-Iuznced lattice solubility in strained ferrite. This excessive uptake of nitrogen had previously been attribuled by other investigators to the formation of a nonstoichiornetric aluminum nitride. Isotope exchange experiments revealed various amomts of exchargeable N14 present in the originally nitrided samples that could not be removed by reduction with HS at 500ºC. This exchangeable nitrogen has been identified us that bound to the AlN -ferrite interface. Estimates of inter facial areas in alloys containing -3 pct by weight of A1N are as high as 10 sq m per g of alloy. ThE first1 of this series of papers described the experiments forming the basis for the elucidation of the mechanism of the formation of aluminum nitride particles within an Fe-A1 alloy. It was found that not only are dislocations necessary for the nucleation of the AlN particles but also the nitriding reaction in turn produces a dense network of dislocations in the ferrite matrix. It was also observed that nitrogen in excess of that needed for the formation of stoichiometric AIN is taken up by the alloy without the formation of an iron nitride. The present paper is an analysis of the excess nitrogen sorbed by the nitrided Fe-A1 alloy which considers the structure generated by the formation of the aluminum nitride particles. Because of the high density of dislocations, this system has proved to be quite useful in studying nitrogen-dislocation interactions. Wriedt and Darken2 have already reported such studies in a cold-worked ferritic steel. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogen Sorption. The specimens of this alloy were cold worked (50 pct reduction) to 0.011 in. thickness and chemically cleaned in a 2:1 concentrated phosphoric acid-50 pct hydrogen peroxide solution before nitrogenation. The flowing nitrogenating atmosphere (11 pct NH3-89 pct H2) was established before the ni- trogenating temperature was reached. The same gravimetric and gas-flow equipment described in an earlier paper1 was also used in this investigation. Changes in nitrogen concentration were followed gravimetrically when establishing the isotherms. In the isotope exchange experiments, concentration changes were followed volumetrically. In some instances chemical analyses (Kjeldahl method) were used to check for material balances in both the gravimetric and volumetric procedures. Our objective was to obtain reversible nitrogen sorption isotherms for alloys equilibrated with NH3-H2 gas mixtures over a large range of nitrogen activity* and temperature. The *Defined as equal to PN H /P3/2 ,where P corresponds to partial pressure in atmospheres. Actually the nitrogen activity, aN, in the alloy equals K PNH3 /p3/2H2, where K is the equilibrium constant for the reaction NH3 = N + 3/2H2. upper limit for nitrogen activity was below that which would produce iron nitride; for reasons which will become apparent later, most of the sorption studies were made in the temperature range between 400" and 500'C. The alloy sample studied most extensively in this investigation was given a series of successive reductions (100 pct H2) and nitrogenating treatments at 500°C to attain a stabilized structure. Presumably some dislocations were lost during these treatments. Throughout most of the sorption studies, temperature was held at ± 1°C and the gas-phase composition was held to k0.2 pet NH3. The exchange rate between the gas phase and the alloy was too slow, involving many days. To circumvent the slow exchange with the gas phase, measured amounts of N15 and N14 were introduced into the alloy by nitrogenating with an NH3-H2, mixture at 500°C containing an N15/N14 ratio of 7.76; the charged specimens were then sealed by allowing an oxide film to form over them in air, and in this final condition the specimens were subjected to 500°C in vacuum for various times during which isotope exchange was allowed to proceed within the specimen. Pupin; and among members of the A.I.M.E. now living, Sir Robert A. Hadfield, Herbert Hoover, and Daniel C. Jackling. On the evening of March 1 7 the name of Paul Dyer Merica was formally added to this list of illustrious engineers when the medal was presented to him at a dinner at the Metropolitan Club in New York. The citation read. For important contributions to the development of alloys for industrial uses. Arrangements for the dinner were made by the following committee representing the four Founder Societies: R. C. Allen, George S. Davison, A. A. Potter, and J. B. Whitehead.

MANY of the properties of metals and alloys are structure dependent. Not the least of these is the grain structure. For example, in producing alloy bonds between silicon or germanium and gold-alloy foil at temperatures above their eutectics (which are, respectively, at 370" and 356°C) but below the melting points of the individual constituents, it was found that wetting was more complete with a fine-grain structure than with a coarse-grain structure. In cases where the assemblies were held together for long periods of time at elevated temperatures, wetting was not as critically dependent on the grain structure as was the case for shorter periods of time. When liquid phase forms, it first forms in the grain boundaries due to the fact that most of the impurities are concentrated at the grain boundaries and that most impurities tend to lower the melting point of the gold alloy somewhat. In addition, grain boundaries are at high-surface free-energy levels and are thus in a more favorable condition to initiate good wetting. A fine-grain structure will have more grain boundaries per unit area than coarse-grain structure thereby making wetting somewhat easier. To make the grain structure of an alloy sys- tem visible, a satisfactory method for differentiating between the different grains of which the system is composed must be employed. For the alloy bonding system previously described, the grain structure on the foil surface is of primary interest. Conventionally used etchants for the gold-alloy system will not adequately delineate grain boundaries in their structures. For this reason an alternate method is proposed for those cases where such a determination is necessary. Foil between 0.0005 and 0.005 in. thick has been used in this determination. The equipment used in this investigation was described in a previous publication.' Essentially, it employs a resistance-type filament which can be heated up very rapidly and cooled very rapidly. A thin refractory material is placed on top of the heating element. This refractory material may be molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, or even ceramic but its thickness should be less than 0.010 in. to minimize the temperature gradient across it. The gold-alloy foil is placed on top of this refractory material. The temperature of the heating filament is raised to 900°C and cooled down to below 100°C in 5 to 10 sec. During this cycle, the foil can be observed to plastically deform due to its own weight. With no further chemical etching, this assembly is then viewed under a standard metallurgical microscope and the grain size measured. Fig. 1 is a Au-1 pct Sb alloy at 400X magnification and Fig. 2 is a Au-1 pct Ga alloy at 130X. This technique has proved to be an adequate means for controlling processing conditions in producing large quantities of gold alloy foil.

In this he touched upon the uses of oil as a fuel for generating power, especially in connection with the Diesel engine. This paper was discussed it some length by J. F. Mitchell-Roberts, R. B. Moran, F. H. Asbury and L. D. Godshall. The Chair then introduced Robert B. Moran of the California State Mining Bureau, Deputy Supervisor of Gas and Oil, for the' Los Angeles . Spencer Gulf takes off from the Great Australian Bight cutting a 200 mile deep wedge of water into the South Australia coastline. A pale winter sun shines yellowly on the choppy surface of this body of water which is progressively more salty as it approaches Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf. Once Port Augusta thrived as a grain port and the speedy clipper ships began or ended their legendary races there. On the eastern shores of Spencer Gulf, farm land spreads away from the water's edge. The western side of the gulf meets marginal grazing land of acacia tree and salt bush. Part way down the gulf, there are two industrial towns facing each other from opposite shores; Port Pirie on the east and Whyalla on the west. These towns are like half brothers, the common parent being the founders of Broken Hill Pty. Ltd., (BHP) who began lead smelting at Port Pirie and discovered iron ore near Whyalla needed for the lead smelting process. The iron deposits later became the inspiration for BHP's iron and steel business.

The D-7 zone of the Ventura Avenue field is of special interest because the initial reservoir pressure at 92.00 ft nearly equaled the pressure exerted by the overburden. While the phenomenon has been observed elsewhere in the world, there is no record of a previous case in California. Such high pressures have been attributed to sealing of the reservoir, followed either by emergence of the beds or by compaction of the sediments in various ways. Oil in the D-7 zone is undersaturated. At pressures above the bubble point, oil is recovered by the slight expansibility of the reservoir framework and its liquid contents. More than 40 pct as much oil probably will be recovered by this mechanism as will be recovered by internal gas drive after pressures pass below the bubble point. Operations are handicapped by sand and pipe troubles. Introduction The Ventura Avenue field has been under development since 1915. It has long been considered a "high-pressure" field, but interest was heightened by the extreme conditions encountered in the recent development of the so-called D-7 zone. The original reservoir pressure in this pool is estimated to have been 8300 psi at a depth of 9000 ft below sea level, or 9200± ft below the surface. A fluid pressure approaching that exerted by the overlying sediments has been encountered in other parts of the world, but never before in California to the degree observed in the D-7 pool. With few exceptions, the original pressure in California fields is about equivalent to the static head of water below the water table in the outcrop. Structure The Ventura anticline is a prominent feature of the Ventura basin, being traceable on the surface about 17 miles.' The Ventura Avenue field is at the apex of the anticline. It is about one mile wide and five miles long, the major axis lying in an east-west direction. The productive limits cover an area of about 2300 acres. The entire anticline has been severely folded and faulted. The productive portions in particular are broken up by three major thrust faults having a general east-west strike. The resultant four fault blocks are termed the A, B, C, and D blocks, respectively. Certain electric-log intervals are assigned numbers. Fig I is a diagrammatic north-south section of the field near the crest, looking west, and shows three of the four fault blocks. To the west, the upper fault divides into two branches, which define the B block. Wells penetrating a fault may duplicate over 1000 ft of formation. However, the greater fault movement is the strike shift, which is believed to exceed 2500 ft both between the A and C blocks and between the C and D blocks. The location of water is irregular and unpredictable. A few intermediate waters exist, while some strata have more than 2000 ft of productive closure.

G. L. Bailey (British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association, London, England)—I was glad to see this further work on the structure and properties of the Cu-Ni-Fe alloys of low nickel content in which we have been so interested in the United Kingdom since before the war." The authors' data on the variation in solubility of iron in both 5 and 10 pct Ni alloys with temperature is based on more detailed observations than we have made but is generally in line with our own work. The difficulty in these matters is in the identification of the structures obtained. The precipitation of the second phase which we presume to be the a' solid solution, richer in nickel and iron, from the a solution with which it is in equilibrium occurs in such a fine state of division that its resolution by ordinary micro-graphic methods is impossible in the early stages. We have published some electron micrographs which illustrate the effects observed more clearly but we agree with the authors when they say that dark staining characteristics when the alloys are subjected to sea-water corrosion are more sensitive in detecting the presence of the a' phase than is the microscope. After taking this point into consideration, however, I confess to some difficulty in understanding Fig. 4. I can only assume that the precipitates visible at such a low magnification as 150 diam in these relatively coarse forms are produced from iron-rich areas of the initial solid solution due to inadequate homogenization. If this is so I find it difficult to accept the authors' contention that such local variations in iron concentration as are capable of giving the heavy precipitates shown in Fig. 4 do not in fact materially affect the solvus surfaces of their equilibrium diagrams. I share the authors' enthusiasm about the resistance to corrosion of these alloys by seawater but I am not fully in agreement with them on the vexing question of the best iron content for these alloys. In Fig. 3 of ref. 8, we give many results showing that the resistance of these alloys to impingement attack in the Jet Test increases as the iron content rises to 2 pct. With higher iron contents pitting at shielded areas is likely to occur. Admittedly the addition of 0.75 pct Fe produces a large improvement in corrosion resistance compared with a pure 90/10 Cu-Ni alloy, but the further improvement on raising the iron to 2 pct is substantial. We recommend from 1.5 to 2 pct Fe as the desirable range from the point of view of corrosion resistance. While it is true that British practice generally uses a hard tube, the corrosion resistance of the 10 pct Ni alloys has in our work been little affected by the structural condition. Although the annealed alloys blacken in seawater, this effect seems to be superficial and not to be accompanied by any real decrease in

The rapid increase in the use of pulvcrulent adsorptive materials in the so-called "contact filtration" process for decolorizing lubricating oils makes it desirable to consider some of the basic principles involved. The commercial methods and types of equipment now used arc fairly well known, having been extensively described in the trade journals. In spite of this very little has been published concerning the factors which must be considered in the selection of a process or of a decolorizing ing material. It is commonly understood that contact filtration more or less closely follows the laws of adsorption. These principles have been thoroughly drscribed by Gurwitsch.' The contacting of neutral mineral oils seems to be adsorptive in character and apparently follows Freundlich's law of adsorption which may be expressed by the formula: X = Color material adsorbed hy the clay. M = Amount of clay used. C = Concentration of color material after equilibrium. A and P = Constants for a given oil and clay. Fig. 1 shows the decolorization curve for a natural, dark colored cylin-der stock when contacted with various quantities of clay, curve R being made with natural Riverside Texas fuller's earth and T being made with an acid-treated clay from Texas. As the Tag-Robinson color is inversely proportional to the depth of color, the reciprocal of these colors ran be assumed to be a funct ion of the concentratlion of coloring matter. SURFACE depletion can be a significant source of error in the use of the effusion method for determining the thermodynamic properties of alloys, particularly in the case of solid alloys.' However, as yet this problem has not been treated quantitatively by experimentalists in the field.1-3 The method necessitates diffusive transport of material out of the source alloy to obtain a relevant measurement. The general character of the system is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusive flux (nD) at the alloy surface is equal to the effusive flux (nE): where D is the diffusion coefficient of the diffusing substance, C is its concentration, X is the distance from the surface into the source alloy, p is the density of the alloy, and AS is the actual available surface of the alloy. The concentration of the diffusing substance at the surface is CS, and Here fE is the Clausing factor, AE is the area (sq cm) of the orifice, y is the activity coefficient of the substance in the alloy, PO is the vapor pressure (Torr) of the pure substance, M is the molecular weight of the effusing species, and T is the absolute temperature. The differential equation for diffusive transport in the source alloy is Fick's second law. Its solution is dependent on the geometry of the source alloy. Two boundary conditions must be established to obtain the proper solution, the first being Eq. [1], or its equivalent. The solutions for several important forms of the source alloy are considered below.

The effect of sintering types 302, 3028, and 430 stainless steel powder compacts in hydrogen and dissociated ammonia was investigated. It was found that sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in as much as 0.5 wt pct increase in the nitrogen content of stainless steel even though the dissociation of the gas was complete. Sintering in hydrogen, on the other hand, reduced the nitrogen content of the stainless steel to less than 0.01 wt pct. In the case of the 302-type stainless steel, the low nitrogen content resulted in a material that was largely ferritic, whereas the high nitrogen content rendered the material fully austenitic. Sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in lower density, generally lower tensile strength, less ductility, and higher hardness than sintering under equivalent conditions in hydrogen. The reduction of oxides on both stainless steel and iron particles was found to be effected by hydrogen partial pressure in the sintering atmosphere. Compacting pressure was found also to effect oxide reduction during sintering. DISSOCIATED ammonia often is used as a substitute'.' for hydrogen in sintering and in annealing, since economic advantages sometimes can be obtained by such a substitution. In addition, anhydrous ammonia contains very little impurity. Thus, dissociated ammonia gas is very dry whereas tank hydrogen often must be freed of oxygen and water vapor prior to use in many applications. The sintering of stainless steel powder compacts as well as bright annealing is well recognized as requiring a hydrogen atmosphere and for the foregoing reasons dissociated ammonia is frequently substituted. It has generally been overlooked, however, that the nitrogen in dissociated ammonia might have an important effect on the sintering process and on the properties of stainless steel compacts. Considered an inert gas in many applications, nitrogen, on the other hand, is very reactive with cer- tain metals. Dissociated ammonia could not be used for hydriding zirconium or titanium. Nitrogen reacts with columbium, tantalum, chromium, uranium, thorium, and many other active metals. Iron and iron-base alloys are, for the most part, inert in nitrogen but there are many borderline cases. It has been reported that stainless steel stabilized with columbium or titanium should not be sintered in dissociated ammonia.3 olybdenum has been reported as reacting with dissociated ammonia to a minor extent.' Although most of the reactions with iron-base alloys are attributed to the action of un-dissociated ammonia and the action of nascent nitrogen, Uhlig4 showed how readily pure molecular nitrogen reacts with and diffuses into 18-8 stainless steel at 1150°C. He also pointed out how readily nitrogen diffuses out of 18-8 stainless steel when heated in pure dry hydrogen, and these thorough investigations on the subject show that commercial stainless steels are nitrogen-bearing, since they are melted in air. ThE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydro-thern~ally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CeMent and Concrete Linings During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, howcver, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 11\2 pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with 12 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concretc and precast blocks. LEAD is an inexpensive metal produced and consumed in large quantities with certain chemical and physical properties that permit handling the molten metal in bulk. These properties are its low melting point, resistance to oxidation, and its negligible solvent action on iron and steel. Thus, lead is almost always melted in large iron or steel kettles, heated from beneath, and is seldom melted in either directly or indirectly fired furnaces or electric induction or arc furnaces. Even with a modest operation a kettle holding 2 or 3 tons is employed, and the size will range up to 215 tons in the large lead refineries. The methods of handling tin and its alloys are essentially the same as for lead because of the similarity in melting point and resistance to oxidation, although because of the cost of the metal the scale is more modest. In melting lead and its alloys preliminary to a casting operation it is seldom that the melting unit is completely drained of its contents. The usual procedure is to continuously charge solid metal and continuously remove small amounts of liquid metal, so that the kettle is maintained essentially full at all times. For type metals, linotype machines usually employ automatic means of adding the solid alloy to the melting pot in proportion to the removal of the liquid metal in casting slugs of type. In the casting of grids for storage batteries, frequently automatic means of charging solid metal in direct proportion to the consumption of liquid metal in the casting is used. In the manufacture of bearing alloys, new alloy is charged in direct proportion to the consumption of metal in the bearings being cast, so that at no time does the level of the metal in the melting pot lower to any great extent. Even in the manufacture of bulky commodities such as pipe, cable. sheathing, and slabs for rolled sheet, it is the practice to employ a melting kettle of several times the capacity of the casting being made. A substantial level of liquid metal in the melting kettle is thus maintained even after the casting is poured and the original metal level is quickly restored by promptly charging new metal, even though there is no immediate need to proceed with additional casting. This procedure is permissible because the amount of fuel consumed in keeping the lead molten and immediately available for use is negligibly small and the cost is more than offset by the convenience. However, this convenient procedure necessitates study and control of certain properties of lead and tin alloys that are not of serious consequence in most other alloys and for that reason are not well known. These properties are "drossing rates" and "melting segregation." DROSSING RATE Users of lead long ago observed that the rate of dross formation on the surface of the lead in their kettles or pots varied greatly from time to time. This was particularly common in places where both antimonial lead alloys and commercially pure lead were being handled.

Kentucky for the first time in its oil history passed the 10 million barrel mark. Of the total 10,019,641 bbl., 8,262,516 bbl. were produced in Western Kentucky, and Union County surpassed all others, with 4,056,142 bbl., or 40 percent of all the production for the state. There were 930 wells known to have been drilled during the year; 510 in Western Kentucky and 221 in the gas-producing area of Eastern Kentucky.

Data are resented on the physical properties of five waxes obtained from fields in Texas and Louisiana in which "parafin" troubles are being experienced. The crude parafin was fractionated into three components, voluble in cold acetone, soluble in boiling acetone, and insoluble in boiling acetone. The acetone insoluble fraction was found to consist essentially of straight chain parafin hydrocarbons in the molecular weight range 525 to 700. Solubilities of the purified high molecular weight parafins were determined in a number of solvents. It was found that in hydrocarbon solvents, including crude oil, solubilities could be calculated satisfactorily by use of ideal solubility relations. In chlorinated, and oxygenated solvents, large deviations from ideal behavior were observed. These deviations could be partially correlated with the internal pressure of the solvent. INTRODUCTION A problem encountered in many producing oil fields is that of "paraffin" deposition. The problem refers to the deposition of material from the crude oil onto tubing, pumping rods, flow lines, or other material contacted by the crude. This problem has been recognized for nearly a hundred years, and numerous investigations have been reported on its causes and prevention or alleviation. One of the more comprehensive of such investigations was published by Reistle1 in 1932. A few of the salient findings of his report are briefly as follows: The term "paraffin" as used to describe this problem refers to the deposit of carbonaceous material which is not soluble or dispersible by the crude oil under the conditions where deposition occurs. The "paraffin" normally consists of high molecular weight paraffin hydrocarbons, both straight chain and branched, resins and asphaltic materials of undetermined nature, occluded oil and water, and possibly sand. In consistency, the deposit may vary from a soft, sticky material, to one which is hard and brittle. Deposits are usually black, although lighter colors are sometimes observed. Under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and crude oil composition occurring in the underground reservoir, the paraffin is in suspension or solution in the crude. As the oil flows to the surface, there is generally a reduction of temperature, pressure, and the amount of dissolved gases contained in the oil. Reduction of temperature and gas break-out were shown by Reistle to be factors causing reduced solubility of the paraffin in the crude. Thus, as the crude containing paraffin rises to the surface and flows to storage tanks at atmospheric temperature, the solubility of the paraffin may be exceeded. Deposition will begin at the point in the system where the temperature of the system falls below its cloud point, and continue as long as there is a further drop in the solution power of the crude for the paraffin. The severity of the deposition as well as the location of the bulk of the deposition, i.e., in subsurface or surface equipment, will depend on the amount of paraffin originally in the crude, the manner in which pressure and temperature of the crude

General Geology of the Northern Black Hills. The " Black Hills of Dakota," to the northern part of which the following observations apply, occupy a position on either side of the boundary between Wyoming and South Dakota, approximately between 103" 15' and 104" 48' of west longitude and 43 15' to 43" 50' of north latitude. The area is roughly 4160 square miles.* (See Plate I.) As has been pointed out by Profs. H. O. Hofman, I?. R. Carpenter and others, and illustrated by Mr. Newton in the publications of the United States Geological Survey, these hills are made up of a large number of the known formations from the Archean to the Tertiary, which latter constitutes the border of the region. The mining operations are largely confined to the interior of this area, and the centers from which they are conducted (Deadwood, Lead City, Galena, etc.) are situated near the line of junction of the Archean schists and quartzite, supposed to represent the Potsdam Sandstone of the N. NDUSTRY needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain size and grain size distribution. Students of sediments hade explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data. Three facts are implicit in selection of a grade scale: 1) Most particulate mixtures are continuous distributions of sizes, and any grade scale that may be employed is an arbitrary means of visualizing that distribution. 2) For purely descriptive purposes, any grade scale, regardless of the rationality of the class intervals, will be satisfactory if it is accepted by a sufficient number of workers. 3) For analytical purposes, class intervals must be small enough to define the continuous distribution accurately. Further, where statistical studies are involved, a fixed relationship should exist between classes or grades. An argument in favor of geometrically related size grades lies in the fact that most particulate mixtures contain such a wide range of sizes that use of an arithmetic diameter scale is practically impossible. Udden, who recognized this fact in 1898,' proposed one of the first grade scales based on a regular geometrical interval. Udden used 1 mm as his basic diameter and a ratio of 2 (or 1/2) between classes. In 1922 Wentworth2 re-examined Udden's grade scale, retaining the same class interval and basic diameter, but extending the scale in both directions and renaming the classes. In 1930 (Ref. 3, p. 82) the American Society of Testing Materials proposed what is now known as the U.S. Standard fine sieve series, also based on the 1 mm diam, with a v2 ratio between sieves. This, then, is a one fourth Udden-Wentworth series in the sizes below the 4 mesh sieve. The U.S. Standard coarse sieve departs from the 1 mm base and uses inches; hence it is not a direct continuation of the fine series. The U.S. Standard series would thus seem to possess all the attributes of a good grade scale, which it is. It has a large number of classes (sieves). in fact too many for practical use in its entirety. This v2 subdivision of the Wentworth grades has led to the common use of two v2 sieve series, the half-Wentworth and the engineers' series. Geologists and sedimentologists favor the half Wentworth, or 18, 25, 35, 45 sieves, etc., whereas the engineers, preferring round numbers, utilize the other half of the U.S. Standard grade scale in the 16, 20, 30, 40 sieves, etc. The fixed geometrical ratio between classes is an advantage in statistical analysis, but the unequal classes cause some complications in calculations. This is especially true when moment measures are used. It was to simplify these calculations that Krumbein in 1934 devised the phi scale. Phi is defined as being equal to —log2 of the diameter in millimeters. Selection of logarithms to the base 2 relate the phi scale directly to the Wentworth grade scale in such a manner that the whole or fractional diameter values 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4 mm, etc., become rational whole numbers, —1, 0,1, 2, etc. Since this is an arithmetic rather than geometric series, calculations are facilitated. When the logarithm is multiplied by —1 the phi values below 1 mm become positive, those coarser than 1 mm negative. Because of its relationship to the Wentworth grade scale (and in turn to the U.S. Standard fine sieve series) it is not necessary to use the transformation equation to calculate the phi value for each individual sieve; this can be done graphically as shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that this graph may be extended in either direction to include the range of sizes most commonly used by the individual worker. Application to Statistical Analysis Any attempt at systematically relating size analysis data to properties involves a statistical study whether it is recognized as such or not. Since this is true it would seem more logical to use measures and devices related to the general body of statistical theory. Several methods are available for studying particulate mixtures. One of the most commonly employed, and also the most often misused, is the histogram or block diagram. If its limitations are recognized and provided for, the histogram is a very useful tool. According to conventional practice, the bars of equal width are plotted and the values noted in terms of diameters, when in point of fact, log diameter is implied by such notation. Further, the histogram is sensitive to choice of grade scale and size of class interval, either of which may color the result. Grade scales whose classes are not related by fixed intervals are particularly difficult. Another basic weakness of the histogram is that it pictures a continuous distribution as a series of discrete grades.
