Discussion of the paper of Edmund D. North, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 37, January, 1910, pp. 21 to 25. A. SCOTT REID, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*) :-As a constructor of several glass mine-models, I have read with much interest the description of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings by Edmund D. North. As an interchange of ideas and experience is always an advantage, and in view of the fact that such models are coming more and more into vogue, perhaps the following remarks on this subject may prove of interest to mining engineers generally and to Mr. North particularly. In the model of the Waihi gold-mine, New Zealand, which I constructed, a dust-proof case is used. The top, bottom, front, and two ends are of glass; the back only is of wood, painted a dull white, against which the mine-workings show very distinctly. Each mine-level is represented by a horizontal sheet of glass, supported on metal runners fixed to the uprights at each end of the case, in a manner similar to that described by Mr. North. The corner uprights are strengthened by having a metal band screwed to the inside face of each, to which the metal runners or supports for the sheets of glass are screwed in turn. The reason for having this additional strength is that as the mine is developed in depth, and fresh levels are opened, the increasing weight of the glass sheets, added to the model, caused the unsupported wooden uprights to bend slightly, so that the glass sheets-did not fit in with the desired nicety, and co-ordination was, to a considerable extent, lost. Strengthening the uprights in this manner is not important in models of mines in which only a few levels have been opened, or when the sheets of glass are small, but in the Waihi model there are 15 sheets of glass to be supported, and more to be added as development proceeds, and the weight is considerable.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

Nearly three years of experience in Spanish Honduras has placed the writer in possession of many facts concerning its resources which may be of interest to the Institute. According to the most trustworthy surveys, Honduras is bounded on the north and east by the Caribbean Sea; southeasterly by the river Segovia (or Wanks), which flows into the Caribbean at a point called Cabo Gracias a Dios (Cape Thanks be to God), long famous as the favorite hiding-place of the celebrated pirate, Morgan ; southwardly by a corner of San Salvador, the Bay of Fonseca, and the Republic of Nicaragua; Guatemala and San Salvador form tile western boundary. It is one of the five republics composing Central America, has a population of about 310,000 and an area of 150,000 square miles, lying between the 13th and 16th degrees of N. latitude, extending from north to south 200 miles, between the Atlantic and Pacific, and 400 miles from east to west, between Guatemala and Cape Gracias a Dios. It is composed of 13 States or Departments, under one common law. The principal resources are valuable woods, hides, rubber, tobacco, coffee, fruit, cattle, silver and gold. It is of the mineral resources of the country that I will speak, calling attention to the most noted mines, and their relative position to Tegucigalpa, the capital. The introduction of foreign capital into the country dates back about eleven years, and to-day there are at least twenty-five well organized companies.

An investigation has been made of 500 samples of universal and sheared plates of basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steel manufactured by the Pottstown Iron Company, the carbon-limits being 0.07 to 0.18 per cent. Through the courtesy of Mr. W. H. Morris, President, I am able to lag before the Institute the results of these tests. The samples tested were all taken from the finished material, and the chemical determinations were made on drillings from the broken test-pieces, which were sent to the chemist without giving him the heat-numbers. The results are such as to encourage me to keep on with the work, and, if possible, to have it carried out on other steels. It is kith this view that I now offer my tables in their incomplete form. My first table mas constructed by grouping the tests according to chemical analysis in various. ways, and making a rough tabulated statement, from which the ultimate strengths were worked out and carefully compared with the actual results of the tension-tests. From data thus obtained, one table after another was worked out, and by this method of "cutting and trying" I finally arrived at the results which I now present in Table I. (p. 771). I do not claim absolute accuracy, but my approximations have proved to be so close that the figures are practical data for current use at the works. The indications are that a pure iron, without carbon, phosphorus, manganese, or silicon, if it could be obtained, would give 38,000 pounds ultimate strength. This is assumed as a base, and to it is added the effect of each of the above elements, as explained below. The upper part of Table I. gives the ultimate strength due to carbon and phosphorus, and is the same for both basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steels. The lower part gives the increase in ultimate strength due to manganese. By adding this to the amount obtained from the upper part, we have the ultimate strength of basic Bessemer

Eight years ago the Hecla mine, a lead-silver producer, situated at Burke, Idaho, was producing ore from but two levels, the 300- and the 600-ft. All hoisting was done with a 12- by 16-in. slide-valve, double-reel, hoist. The hoist was being worked to its capacity and was unsuitable for hoisting from greater depths. As the work of opening a new level was about to be started, it became necessary to remodel the then-existing equipment or install a new hoist. The recent advent of electricity from Spokane had made available a cheaper power than steam. By a series of tests conducted throughout the Cæaur d'A1ene district, it was found that it cost $109 per year to generate a horse-power with steam. Electric power was to be had for $50 a horse-power per year. It was decided to substitute for the engines a motor-drive, of sufficient capacity to operate from the 900-ft. level, and ultimately install an entirely new hoist. After disconnecting the engines, installing a new shaft, and making a few minor changes, a 300-h-p., 2,300-volt, 514-rev. per min., variable-speed motor of the induction type was geared to the reel-shaft. The reels were supplied with 3/8- by 4-in. flat rope, and the duty of the hoist was about as follows: Cage, 1,700; ore, 2,600; car, 1,400; rope, 2,250; total, 7,950 pounds. The Bristol ammeter chart, Fig. 1, shows the combined current-consumption of the hoist- and mine-motors. The large intermittent load is clearly shown; this produced harmful fluctuations in the voltage of the long, lightly-loaded, 60,000-volt transmission-line from Spokane to the Cæmur d'A1enes. Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33? per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 Per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. Mine Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three a 13,800/440-volt, single- phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp motor on the No, 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 500-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft, Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min, is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started1 and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the Pumps restart. On failure of any Of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher's office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 37' substation is run to the switching station, in which are four 15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current sole-noid-operated oil circuit breakers. The current for Operating and tripping is furnished by a 125-volt storage battery. All breakers are operated from the switchboard in the compressor room. THE recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that any radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. The most modern and approved of these, known as the all-sliming method, depends for its success on the grinding of the. ore so fine that practically 90 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen. The slimes thus produced are then agitated and aerated in tanks of various types. The main object of this treatment is to insure such a thorough admixture of the pulp and solution that every particle of the ore is surrounded by a volume of solution sufficient to insure the dissolving of the whole of the gold- and silver-content. In addition, in order to expedite the action of the cyanide, and to oxidize such elements as would, if left in their active state, become cyanicides, air is blown in under pressure. In the Pachuca tank, this air is the active and sole means of agitation. The chief objections to all the methods off agitation used heretofore are the expense of operating and maintaining the mechanical devices for keeping the pulp in suspension, and the length of time required to obtain a fairly complete extraction. of the values. These objections are inherent to any method of agitation effecting a circulation of the pulp and the solution together, by giving the whole mass a circular movement, as in the low-tank system, or a vertical circulation, as in the Pachuca-tank system. The morphology and growth rate of ice grown in supercooled water are markedly affected by convection of the water. A dendritic ice sheet with water flowing past the dendrite tip exhibits deflection of the dendrite spine toward the upstream direction, accelerated growth of secondary spines on the upstream side, and suppression 01" secondaries on the downstream side. Flow causes a thin disk to become corrugated, the corrugations being parallel to the flow. Flow causes an increase in the growth rate of the ice. IF a small seed of ice is placed in slightly supercooled water, it grows initially as a disk with the axis of the disk parallel to the c axis of the ice crystal.' It appears that growth in the c direction is inhibited, while growth occurs with equal facility in all directions in the basal plane. It appears that growth rate as a function of interface temperature is very nearly equal for all directions similarly oriented relative to the c axis. Subsequent to the discoid growth, branching occurs and dendrites develop. The primary dendrite spines grow parallel to the six equivalent a axes of the crystal. Secondary, and in some cases, tertiary spines also grow in these directions. The highly anisotropic: dendritic growth indicates that there must be some finite difference of growth rate for different directions in the basal plane. These differences must be quite small, however, since if they were large, the discoid mode would not occur. Hence, it was expected that the dendrite growth direction could be deflected from the crystallographic direction by perturbation of the thermal field at the dendrite tip. Experiments were done in which perturbation of the thermal field was accomplished by causing the supercooled water to flow past the dendrite tip. The flow direction was perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, and was perpendicular to the primary spine of the unperturbed crystal. Supercooled water was supplied by a 15 cm cubical copper box, which was refrigerated and insulated so it could cool water to temperatures down to —2oC, and maintain the temperature constant to O.l°C for the duration of a run. Means for observing the ice are shown in Fig. l(a). Collimated light passes through the ice sheet and forms an image on the ground glass screen. A lucite box containing dry air was employed to prevent condensation. Ice of the desired orientation was provided by the seed holder shown in Fig. l(b). This device was made of lucite, and had a reservoir in which ice could be frozen by placing it in a freezer. This reservoir com-unicated with the outside only through a narrow gap between two sheets of lucite. The seed holder (after ice had been washed off its exterior) was immersed in the tank of supercooled water, the narrow gap terminating in a slot in the top of the flow channel. Ice growing through a thin water layer in the gap between the two sheets of lucite was oriented so its c axis was perpendicular to the sheets. This orientation is an application of a growth phenomenon2 which causes ice growing along a smooth solid surface in supercooled water to orient itself so its c axis is normal to the surface. The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, England, has done much within the last three years to promote discussion on the many systems adopted throughout the mining world; and any papers giving individual experience will benefit that class of men who are charged with the cconomical management of mining properties. ON Thursday, Oct. 9, oil men from far and wide gathered at Beaumont, Texas to participate in a three-day celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the completion of the famous Lucas gusher well at Spindletop field just south of Beaumont, and to pay tribute to Anthony F. Lucas, for whom the Lucas Medal of the A.I.M.E. is named. In the afternoon the gathered host drove to the site of the discovery well to dedicate a 58-ft. granite monu¬ment erected on the spot where the original derrick stood. Representatives of the A.I.M.E. took a prominent part in the dedication ceremonies, giving the two principal addresses of the afternoon's program. Everette DeGolyer, past President, paid a personal tribute to Capt. Lucas, as a pioneer producer, an engineer, and a friend and well wisher of all young engineers. He gave a splendid picture of the useful and full life of Capt. Lucas who always took a great interest in the activities of the Petroleum Division of the Institute, from its inception to the time of his death.

ITEM expressed in billions of dollars have become so commonplace these day- that a mere statement of the latest figures for the country s gold reserve scarcely conveys m adequate sense of the immensity of the commitment the nation has made in building up its huge stock, two-thirds of which is now stored at Fort Knox. Kentucky. Only by measuring it against quantities that mean something tangible to a particular group can an adequate comprehension of its magnitude he rained; consequently, to mining engineers, a comparison with the value of output from well-known mining districts might best serve to give some degree of reality to the astronomical figure at which the country gold is now valued.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

MINING is one of the world's oldest industries and has pioneered the civilization of all new lands. Today, mining is not only one of the essential and basic industries of the world, but it is constantly growing in magnitude and becoming more important. We think that the most of our mining is done in the western portion of this country, but in the old State of Pennsylvania mines and products derived from minerals account for about two-thirds of the entire productive wealth of the State. As our forests are denuded, mining furnishes substitutes for timber in the way of concrete, gypsum board, etc. ; and as civilization increases the wants of mankind, mining is producing metals and minerals of every kind in increasing quantities. For example: during the past ten years the per capita consumption of copper in the United States has increased 49 per cent, to 14.56 Ib.; that of lead has increased 35 per cent, to 12.24 lb.; and that of zinc has increased 70 per cent, to 9.57 Ib. The consumption in European countries is about one-half of this, and there are other countries with large populations where there is virtually no consumption; so when all other countries catch up in consumption with our country, you can see what an enormous demand there is going to be for the metals, even to the extent of having to find substitutes for copper, lead, and zinc.

For this vast program, the explosives industry was well prepared. I use the term "well prepared" to cover all the phases of explosives service, which include formulation, design, manufacture, distribution, and application.

This paper is presented as a suniniary report of the use of well gas composition correlations obtained from mass spectrometer recordings as a means of identification and determination of reservoir continuity. Conventional methods for detecting composition differences are en-pensive, elaborate, and difficult to obtain. This excludes the use of extensive composition data for most applications. During recent years the mass spec-trometer has come into general use as an analytical tool in petroleum refineries. The use of mass spectrometer composition patterns ir~ characterizing or "finger-printing" the produced gas from a reservoir, presents a novel method for correlatitlg gas samples from well to well. The mass spectrometer provides a trace similar to an electric log. having peaks which represent the abuntlnnce of certaitz hydrocarbons in the well gas sample. Without going further into the detailed analysis the idea has been advanced that these traces or patterns could be used as a means of identifying a particular natural gas. This theory has proven to be essentially correct. The mass spectrometer pattern method is simple and cheap as COi?7pared to other standard methods. It greatly facilitates the solution of reservoir and geological problems in which correlation of well gas Com-positions is a factor. Specific field applications have been made. This paper concerns the results obtained in 465 individual gas analyses from 35 fields and 77 res- ervoirs. In a number of cases it has been found that such data have been extremely valuable in the determination of reservoir continuity. In at least one case, the method was a valuable contribution in tracing a reservoir from sand to sand in a coinplex fnulted field involving n11rnerous gas reservoirs. Field applications are presented to illustrate the possibilities of the method at the present stage of developnient and to stimulate the ernployrnent of this new approach by geologists and petroleum engineers in the industry. INTRODUCTION Identification of producing horizons and the determination of reservoir continuity are often a problem in those areas where dome structures and highly faulted sands are encountered. To complicate the picture further, there may be numerous sands, one on top of the other which dip and diverge in different directions. Even though it may be possible to develop some solutions to the preceding problems on the basis of the geological and reservoir data on hand. it is readily recognized that substantiating data based on independent methods would he extremely valuable. It has been found through field studies that correiation of well gas composition can be used to advantage in the geological and engineering study of a complex reservoir identification problem. METHOD FOR COMPARISON AND CORRELATION OF WELL GAS SAMPLES Since a large number of well gas samples are required in a gas identification or reservoir con- tinuity problem, it is necessary that a method of analysis be employed which can detect differences in composition readily and inexpensively. Although detection would be possible by means of low temperature fractional distillation (POD) analpsis, the method requires a relatively large sample and is comparatively slow and expensive to run. The mass spectrometer affords an inexpensive and precise analysis of small well gas samples taken at the surface which are about 1/300 as large as a POD sample. These samples can be obtained by regular field personnei and shipped to the spectrometer for analysis. It is, therefore, a practical approach to the problem. A typical record from the mass spectrometer is illustrated in Fig. I. The peaks on the record represent the abundance of ions produced from the different hydrocarbon molecules making up the gas sam-ple. In well gas comparisons only five peaks are employed, since the other peaks are formed from the same gas molecules and furnish no additional information. The five peaks used represent the abundance of methane, propane, ethane, butane and heavier, and oxygen. They are referred to respectively as the 16, 29, 30, 43, and 32 peaks. It has been shown by Walton and Chalmers,&apos; that the mechanism of the development of solidification textures in castings involves the preferential growth of dendrites along certain crystallographic directions as determined by the influence of prevailing heat-transfer conditions. Specifically, this growth is parallel to the direction of heat flow. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the applicability of this mechanism to: 1) commercially pure aluminum (99.75 pct) solidified to coarse columnar crystals, 2) an aluminum-silicon casting alloy (5.25 Si, 0.38 Fe, 0.02 Cu, 0.10 Ti, 0.002 S) cast to a fine-grained structure under complex and reproducible heat transfer conditions. PROCEDURE AND RESULTS 1) Specimen Preparation—Using a technique similar to that employed by Northcott and Thomas,2 samples were melted in the directional solidification mold, Fig. 1, by heating the entire assembly to 670° C. The mold was then end cooled using a water jet. From considerations of harmonic analysis, the likely distribution of isotherm normals encountered by the growing crystals is shown in Fig. 1. 2) Orientation Analysis—The pure aluminum sample froze to large columnar crystals, nucleated close to the metal diaphragm, with the growth direction parallel to the mold axis. Using the back-reflection Laue technique, the growth direction of these crystals was determined to be a <100>, which coincided within 53 deg to the mold axis. Metallographic examination of the relatively fine-grained aluminum-silicon sample revealed a dendritic mode of growth having its primary dendrite arms along isotherm normals. Back-reflection Debye-Scherrer patterns, taken with the specimen rotating about its cylinder axis, yielded rings displaying symmetrical arcing, thus proving that the sample did, indeed, possess the solidification texture inferred from the preliminary metallographic examination. THE Geology Department of the. University of British Columbia has undertaken the task of examining the ores from as many as possible of the gold mines of British Columbia. The object of this work is two-fold. First, it is known that detailed mineralographic studies are useful in attacking ore-dressing problems, and these studies are intended to be helpful to mill operators. Second, it is hoped that mineralogical and mineralographical studies will prove useful adjuncts to those of lithology and structure in throwing more light on problems related to the origin of the deposits. The paper shows that gold, for all practical purposes, is not present in an ore mineral in solid solution nor as a eutectic with any mineral; if the latter were true the gold particles would be distributed equally throughout that mineral. The gold occurs either as native gold or as a gold-silver telluride and is not distributed regularly through any mineral or minerals: The relationship between the gold or gold-bearing telluride and the associated minerals affords a means of classification that is not only simple but also appears to be directly related to the geological nature of the deposit, which may be summarized as follows: 1. Disseminated Gold Type. ;-Precious minerals in extremely small grains, which are distributed without regard to grain size, fractures or grain boundaries: (1) Hedley variety-gold in native form; (2) Surf Point variety-gold predominantly as telluride. 2. Veining Gold Type.-Precious minerals in grains of various sizes, which occur mainly along fractures and grain boundaries: (1) Cariboo gold quartz-gold in native form. (2) Waneta variety-gold as telluride.

UNTIL a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrofluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acidproof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment.

This paper outlines the development of a program for increasing the life of woolen bags used for filtering Dwight-Lloyd gases by treating the bags and gases with hydrated lime. Methods and apparatus are described for determining alkalinity of dusts, acidity and breaking strength of bag cloth. Procedure and results, based on several years of operation, are presented. DURING 1939, additional facilities were constructed in the Dwight-Lloyd Blast Furnace and Baghouse departments at the Selby, California, Plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. In order to handle adequately the increased volume of gases from the resultant increase in production, it was necessary to increase gradually the amount of water used for cooling gases ahead of the sinter machine baghouse. As a result of this increased water cooling, the average bag life dropped from 27 months in 1939 to 14 months in 1941. (Table I). This drop in life meant an increased. bag cost, as well as lower recovery of dust and some curtailment of operation. During 1941, it was found new bags showed as high as 0.3 pct acidity* after two weeks of opera- tion and as much as 2.0 pct acidity after some months of operation. This high acidity was present in spite of the fact that free oxide or relative alkalinity of the unburned dust ran from 5 to 6 pct. In view of these circumstances, a twofold program was started in Nov. 1941.t Part one of this program consisted of vigorously dipping all new bags in a weak lime solution, containing 50 lb of hydrated lime per 50 gal of water. Part two consisted of feeding fine, dry, hydrated lime into the gas stream intake of the sinter baghouse fan. Apparatus for feeding this lime is shown in fig. 1. All baghouse chambers are shaken in rotation about once each hour. On alternate hours, the baghouse operator places 50 lb of hydrated lime (one sack) into the lime feeder, starts feeder and immediately starts the bag shaking machinery. The rate at which lime is fed is set to coincide with the approximate time necessary to shake all sinter bag-house chambers, or about 15 min. It is felt this method of lime addition is most effective for getting lime into the woolen bag fabric. The amount of lime so fed averages about 600 lb per day. The amount of lime fed per day is varied to keep a minimum relative alkalinity of 9 pct in the unburned sinter dust. A daily dust sample is taken for alkalinity by allowing dust to accumulate in a sample pipe over a 24-hr period. This sample pipe, placed in any chamber cellar, is 2 in. in diam, 4 ft long, is sealed on the inner end, and capped on the outer end. It has a 1/2 in. slot cut for 18 in. along the tip end. This slot faces upward and allows the pipe to fill gradually with dust as bags are shaken. Breaking strength of bags has, in most cases, been the deciding factor in bag replacement. Bags that normally test 100 psi breaking strength when new are replaced when they test under 35 lb. The method for determining breaking strength is shown in the description accompanying fig. 2. Since the start of the liming program in 1941, bag life has increased from 14 months to an average of over 23 months, with a consequent material decrease in bag cost per year. Acidity, as per cent sulphuric acid, may be determined by means of a Beckman pH meter as follows: From a piece of bag cloth. which has been thoroughly cleaned of dust, a 5 g sample is weighed on a balance. Cut the sample into fine pieces and place in a 400 cc beaker. Add 100 cc (measured) of distilled water and stir vigorously. Filter on suction funnel, holding cloth pulp in beaker with a stirring rod. Wash cloth sample and filter wash water four additional times, each time with 20 cc distilled water, the last time squeezing cloth pulp over funnel. Discard pulp and rinse funnel and filter paper. Pour wash solution jnto measuring graduate and make up to exactly 300 cc with distilled water. Place into clean 600 cc beaker and measure the pH on meter. This paper examines the cracking behavior on chemical reduction of three types of ore/oxide briquette mixtures. The complex sintering/hardening atmosphere was replaced by 100% oxygen and the blast furnace atmosphere by a 5/95 hydrogedsteam mixture which was used isothermally at 700°C for a constant, arbitrary time. Cracking has been assessed by measurement of reduction expansion or increase in specimen diameter as a result of chemical reduction and a subjective index based on appearance and friability. Oxidized briquettes of iron ore concentrate crack on reduction&apos;-3 in a manner which parallels the degradation of sinter in the Linder test. In the present work, the cracking behavior on chemical reduction of three types of ore/oxide briquette mixture has been studied. Firstly, LD converter fume with additions of silica; secondly, Oxfordshire ore with ferric oxide; thirdly, ferric oxide with separate additions of silica, alumina and lime. Motivation for the first-mentioned experiments lay in the improvement of the fume as furnace feed; for the second, in assessing the tolerance of a finely divided ferric oxide as a base for low melting point additions. The third series provided additional information. In this work, the complex sintering/hardening atmosphere is replaced by 100% oxygen and the blast furnace atmosphere is replaced by a 5/95 hydrogen/ steam mixture used isothermally at 700°C for a constant arbitrary time.
