With the rapid development of Canadian industries calling for the use of fire-brick for the lining of furnaces or cement-kilns, for constructing brick-kilns or coke-ovens, for lead-furnaces, etc., the question has often arisen whether the provirices within the Dominion have not the necessary raw materials for the manufacture of such refractory wares. As an indication for the need of such products in Canada, me find that the imports in 1910 amounted in value to $519,454. The materials came in part from Great Britain, and part from the United States. Those supplied by the latter country are obtained largely from Pennsylvania and Ohio, and when shipped to distant points, such as British Columbia, the item of transportation is a serious factor. Scotch fire-brick is used both in eastern and western Canada, but in the latter case the shipments are made by water route to Vancouver. During the past four years I have been investigating the clay-deposits of Canada, for the Canadian Geological Survey, and while all types of clay have been included in the study, special pains have been taken to ascertain the occurrence of refractory clays. As a result of this work we are able to report on the existence of beds of refractory clays at the followiug localities: Inverness and Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia; St. Remi, d'Amherst, Quebec; Dirt Hills and Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan; Sumas Mountain, near Clayburn, B. C., and Kyuquot, on northwestern Vancouver Island. A map of Canada, showing the fire-clay deposits, is given in Fig. 1. It is possible that other deposits may be discovered in the future in districts remotely located from the present lines of railroad.

LOCATION THE Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half, of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively small areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. . It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The-Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 -km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Francois Mountains in St. Francois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.).. The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. STRATIGRAPHY The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Francois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Ozarks, the St. Francois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Genevieve County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous-action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

This note will give the cost of driving an adit at the Melones mine, in 1898, and, for purposes of comparison, the cost of similar work, in 1888, at the Hogsback mine, Placer county, Cal. The property of the Melones Consolidated Mining Company is situated on the Mother Lode of California, on Carson Hill, near Robinson's Ferry, and adjoins on the south the famous Morgan mine. The Mother Lode of California extends for a distance of over 100 miles in length through several counties, with a general strike of northwest and southeast. Three veins (commonly called the east vein, middle vein and west vein) comprise the " lode " in this section. The Melones property is situated upon the east and middle vein, and includes 1407 feet on the east vein and 5166 feet upon the middle vein. A shaft had been sunk on the Reserve mine, which is on the east rein, and within 230 feet of the Morgan mine. At the bottom of this shaft drifts and cross-cuts had been run and a large body of ore developed. It was deemed advisable by the Melones Mining Co., which holds this property under bond from the Melones Consolidated Mining Co., to run a tunnel and develop this body of ore at a greater depth. An option was obtained upon the South Carolina mine, which adjoins the property on the south, and is on the same east vein, upon which a tunnel had been run a distance of 1080 feet. This tunnel was cleaned out and continued to a point within forty feet of the Morgan mine. It passes directly under the Reserve shaft, 425 feet below the 200-foot level. The phase boundaries for the 950" isothermal sections in the ternary systems Zr-Co-0 and `Zr-Ni-0 have been determined for the composition range from 50 to 100 at. pct Zr. The two systems show very similar phase relations, having no extensive solid solution phase fields. Each contains a ternary phase. These phases are apparently isostructural, but their structure has not been determined. Some aspects of the phase relations are discussed in terms of the alloying behavior of transition metals. THE work described in this paper is the outgrowth of a recent study of the occurrence of phases having the Ti2Ni-type structure (structure-type E9,) in certain ternary systems involving Ti, Zr, or Hf with another transition metal and O.", In the Zr-CO-0 and Zr-Ni-0 systems no Ti2Ni-type phases were found to occur. However, there are several interesting aspects of the phase relations in the two systems which have significance from the point of view of the alloying behavior of transition metals. The results of this investigation may also have some importance in studies of the oxidation of Zr-Co and Zr-Ni alloys. In both the Zr-Co-0 and Zr-Ni-0 systems only the 950" isothermal sections were investigated and, as a further restriction, the study was limited to the composition range from 50 to 100 at. pct Zr. A tentative Zr-Co binary diagram has been published by Larsen, Williams, and Pehin. In the composition range pertinent to the present work they report a eutectic at 980°C and 75.9 at. pct Zr, the products of which are the terminal solid solution based on /3 Zr and the compound Zr2Co, and a eutectic at 1080" and 64.8 at. pct Zr whose products are Zr,Co and ZrCo. The solid solution based on /3 Zr is shown to decompose eutectoidally at 826°C into a Zr and Zr2Co. The limits of solubility of Co in a and /3 Zr have not been established. The structure of Zr2Co is not identified in the publication just cited. Dwight has reported that ZrCo has the CsC1-type strcture. The Zr-rich portion of the Zr-Ni diagram has been determined by Hayes, Roberson, and Paasche." The phase relations are very similar to those of the ZrCo system. A eutectic reaction whose products are /3 Zr containing 2.9 at. pct Ni and Zr,Ni occurs at 961°c, and a eutectic between Zr,Ni and ZrNi is found at 985". The solid solution based on /3 Zr decomposes eutectoidally at 808°C. The solubility of Ni in a Zr is not known accurately but is believed to be very small. Smith, Kirkpatrick, Bailey, and Williams7 have found that Zr2Ni has a tetragonal structure of the A1,Cu-type and that ZrNi is orthorhombic. Domagala and McPherson8 have published a constitution diagram for the system Zr-ZrO,. At 950" their diagram indicates that the solid solution of 0 in 0 Zr is stable from 0 to 0.5 at. pct while the phase field of 0 in a Zr extends from 6 to 29 at. pct. These solubility limits were adopted in the present study and no binary Zr-0 alloys were made. No previous data on the phase diagrams of the ternary systems are known to exist. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental details involved in the preparation of alloys in this laboratory by arc melting have been described in several previous papers"3 and they will not be repeated here. Information concerning the purity of the metals used is given in Table I. Oxygen was added in the form of reagent grade ZrO,. All of the cast specimens in both alloy systems were annealed in air-atmosphere tube furnaces at 950 3' for 72 hr and water quenched. The specimens were protected from oxidation by wrapping them in Mo foil and sealing them in quartz tubes that had been evacuated at room temperature to a pressure of 1 x 10B mm of Hg. The phase boundaries were determined by metallography, and identification of the phases was accomplished primarily by X-ray diffraction methods which employed a powder camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The diffraction techniques which are in use in this laboratory have been previously described.' An etchant that proved satisfactory for most of the alloys consisted of 5 pct by vol of AgNO

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. The oil recovery performance of systems producing entirely by bottom-water encroachment has been experimentally determined in a series of scaled laboratory-model tests. The effects of well spacing, fluid mobilities, rate of production, capillary and gravity forces, well penetration and well completion techniques on the oil recovery performance have been investigated. The laboratory tests were performed using two uniform, un-consolidated sand-pack models. The models have ratios of the interwell distance to the formation thickness of 12 and 2, respectively. Tests at constant total fluid production rate were performed simulating a range of uniform reservoir characteristics and operating conditions encountered in field operations. The performance was determined by material balance and by observation of the encroachment of dyed fluids into the models. The results of the model tests agreed with those obtained mathematically when the conditions previously considered in theoretical studies were simulated, that is, when the oil and water are of equal density and no capillary forces exist. The model study of bottom-water drive indicated that certain variables can aoect the oil recovery performance to a greater degree than can be predicted by present analytical methods. In one comparison, the oil recovery at a water-oil ratio of 20 (obtained at a wide well spacing) varied as much as threefold, depending upon the system's properties and the production rate. Lesser effect of mobility ratio and no eflect of capillary forces over the range studied were observed. The test 'results also showed that the deeper the well penetration into the oil column, the greater the total water production to a producing WOR of 20. However, the ultimate sweep efficiency, and so the oil recovery to this level of WOR, did not vary significantly with well penetration. Horizontal fractures at the top of the formation did not significantly change the sweep characteristics of the reservoir models when values of radius and fracture capacity encountered in actual reservoirs were used. Impermeable pancakes at the bottom of the well moderately increased the oil recovery efficiency both at water breakthrough and at high water-oil ratios. A method is outlined by which the oil recovery performance of other uniform bottom-water drive systems can be estimated from the information obtained in these model tests. INTRODUCTION When oil is produced from a well which partially penetrates an oil zone completely underlain by water, the water rises directly beneath the well in a symmetrical cone when the system is uniform. Two different flow mechanisms can cause the water cone to form—coning and bottom-water drive. In coning, the aquifer is relatively inactive and the cone is formed beneath the well by the pressure gradients associated with the oil flow to the well. The oil can be produced by a solution-gas drive, an edge-water drive or other driving forces in the interwell area. In a bottom-water drive, the driving force for oil production comes from an upward encroachment of the underlying active aquifer. Two papers have analyzed the theoretical performance characteristics of bottom-water drive reservoirs. In the initial mathematical investigation, Muskat' established the equations which determine the pressure distribution in this type of reservoir and solved these equations for certain conditions. Specifically, it was assumed that the water and oil had equal mobilities and equal densities, there were no capillary forces, the pressure throughout the oil zone remained above the bubble-point pressure, a constant pressure existed at the initial water-oil contact and the oil was completely displaced by the encroaching water. These assumptions were used in obtaining analytical solutions. In general, Muskat found that the sweep efficiency to initial water breakthrough to the well was larger for the thicker oil zones, the closer well spacings, the lower ratios of vertical to horizontal permeabilities, the smaller the penetration of the well into the oil zone and the smaller the bore size of the well. The production history after water breakthrough was expressed as a volumetric sweep efficiency at a given producing water-oil ratio. The results indicated that cumulative oil production at producing water-oil ratios of 10 is less affected by the well spacing than is the water-free production history. Muskat studied well spacing which today would be regarded as close. The maximum value of his dimensionless well spacing (ratio of interwell distance to formation thickness) was 4.3. This would require the development of a 50-ft-thick oil sand on less than 10-acre spacing if the vertical and horizontal permeabilities were equal, with

The van Arkel-deBoer method for producing ductile titanium by thermal decomposition of Til, vapor and deposition on an electrically heated filament is modified by film boiling Til liquid on a heated filament, resulting in similar titanium deposition on the filament and liberation of gaseous iodine. The deposition rate is higher and the energy requirement smaller than in the van Arkel process. Many problems must be solved before the process is commercially feasible. TITANIUM of 99.9 pct purity, called ductile titanium, has been produced by a modification of the van Arkel-deBoer&apos; method. In the van Arkel-deBoer method, an electrically heated wire is suspended from two electrodes, which are placed in a container holding TiI, vapor at a low&apos; vapor pressure (usually <5 mm Hg). The vapor diffuses to the hot wire, usually maintained at 1100" to 1600°C,&apos; and decomposes according to the reaction liberating gaseous atomic iodine and depositing solid crystalline titanium on the wire. Estimations based on the data of Runnalls and Pidgeon,&apos; indicate that the rate-control ling step is the diffusion of atomic iodine away from the wire. There appears to be nearly thermodynamic equilibrium at the wire with TiI, and iodine as the main gaseous species. TiI, is almost certainly an important gaseous species in the cooler regions.&apos; The liberated iodine diffuses to a heated source of crude titanium and reacts to form more TiI, vapor, which again diffuses to the hot wire and completes the cyclic process. The foregoing process may be modified by suspending the hot wire in liquid TiI,, instead of the vapor, and obtaining film boiling. This type of boiling is characterized by the formation of a continuous film of vapor over the wire surface. Since only vapor contacts the wire sul.face, the temperature of this surface may be raised as high as desirable, within the limit of mechanical strength requirements for the wire. By properly adjusting the input voltage. the temperature of the wire may be maintained above U0C"C; and by evacuating the vessel holding the liquid TiI, and maintaining a suitable condenser temperature, the vapor pressure of TiI, may be held low. Thus, the conditions of operation of the van Arkel-deBoer method may be approximated with film boiling; and hence, it is postulated that ductile titanium may be produced by this method. Preparation of Til, There are many methods available for the preparation of TiI,; that used in this research was prepared by the direct reaction of titanium sponge in controlled amounts with liquid iodine. Although no difficulty was encountered with this reaction, it has since been pointed out that this method is sometimes dangerous and should be used with caution. The resulting TiI, was purified by distillation. First Film Boiling Experiments Apparatus: The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was used for film boiling TiI, on short wire filaments. The current to the filament was supplied through a bank of three 5 kva transformers connected in parallel. The current was controlled by adjusting the voltage over a 0 to 67.5 v range with a 7 kva variable transformer on the low voltage side of the bank of transformers. The current and voltage were measured by Weston meters. The sealed-in-glass tungsten electrodes were hard-soldered to the filament for the film boiling of TiI,. The bottom part of the reactor, containing TiI,, was wrapped with ni-chrome heating wires to maintain the TiI, in the liquid state. An ice or liquid nitrogen trap, for solidifying I, vapor and any TiI, not condensed, was attached to the low pressure side of the air-cooled condenser. A Megavac vacuum pump was used. Procedure: A 0.010 in. diam tungsten filament was hard-soldered to the tungsten electrodes. TiI, was melted (mp 156°C) and poured into the reactor chamber; the top of the reactor chamber, containing the electrodes, was replaced. Freezing of the TiI, was prevented by controlling the current to the ni-chrome wires wrapped around the reactor with a 1 kva variable transformer. The mechanical vacuum pump was started and the system evacuated to about 2 mm Hg TiI, vapor pressure. THE MIDLANDS of England contain large areas of important oil lands, which, however, will not become of commercial importance for at least 5 years, because the ownership of the oil has become a political issue. In Great Britain, except in certain special areas, all minerals, except for gold and silver, belong to the surface owner. The leasing of minerals on the large estates is a very complicated business, as the family solicitors have many forms and formalities that must be observed. In the case of one of the large estates, the principal revenues of which for several hundred years have been from coal leases, the average time between the agreement on terms for a coal lease and the signing of the same has been 8 years. In 1916, one coal lease on this estate had been pending for 15 years, and was still unsigned, although the important terms had been agreed upon 15 years previously. Under war conditions, and considering the extreme importance that the production of petroleum in England would have had, such delays could not be tolerated. Most of the British landlords, relying on the almost, universal opinion of their own countrymen that there were no commercial deposits of petroleum in Great Britain, were prepared to give all their oil rights to the government, but they feared that such action might establish a precedent with respect to coal. For years the Labor Party and extreme radicals have protested against the payment of royalties to landlords on coal. The government, therefore, introduced a bill taking over all the oil rights and providing for the payment of a small royalty to the landlords, to safeguard the principle of compensation in case the coal mines should ever be nationalized. The provision of this bill, with respect to the payment of royalty to landlords, was defeated by a vote of 44 to 35 in a night session of the House of Commons on Oct. 25, 1917, when most of the members were absent, but when a group of labor members and extreme radicals were present. The resubmission of the point to the House of Commons was prevented by the labor members of the coalition government, who reminded the cabinet that the agreement

THE low-temperature carbonization of coal involves the carrying out of the coking process under conditions wherein neither the coal mass nor any of the passageways through which the volatile products pass are heated above 700° or 800° C. For convenience in this discussion, the single number 750° will be used to designate the maximum range. This temperature is not selected arbitrarily; it is the result of certain natural conditions that are inherent in the substances involved. Two of these conditions arc sufficiently pronounced to suggest a line of demarcation at this point as follows: (1) Below 750°, all the heavy hydrocarbons are expelled, which means that, at these lower temperatures, the illuminants, the gases of high calorific value, and the condensible oils are discharged; above 750°, there are given off the lean, non-illuminating gases consisting for the most part of hydrogen and marsh gas and having no condensible constituents present. (2) Below 750°, there is substantially no secondary decomposition; above 750°, the volatile products are readily decomposed, forming tars, naphthalene, free carbon, etc. It is not intended to maintain that no secondary decompositions occur below 750°. Many recent studies have demonstrated the practicability, especially in the presence of catalytic substances, of cracking certain of the hydrocarbon compounds; but at these lower temperatures the step is a moderate one, as, for example, from xylene to toluene or from toluene to an anthracene. These changes are moderate in amount. Not only do the reactions proceed slowly but they are subjected to the decomposing conditions for only a short time. This is evident when it is recalled that at these initial temperatures the decomposition, of the coal is very rapid and, if anywhere near a neutral pressure is maintained, the movement

For a nurnber of years, it has been known that manganese made by electro-deposition under certain conditions is ductile while under other conditions it is very brittle. The ductile metal is gamma manganese normally stable only between 1100 and 1138°C1; the brittle metal is alpha manganese, stable up to 727OC. The ductile metal is not stable, but gradually changes to the brittle form; the time required to complete the transfornlation is about 20 days at room temperature. Other observations have indicated that the transformation is completed in 10 to 15 min. at about 125°C, while at — 10°C, no appreciable change occurs in 9 months. The properties of gainma and alpha Illanganese in the pure state are ordinarilj difficult to determine because the gamma structure cannot be retained by normal quenching procedures and alpha manganese is so brittle, it is difficult to obtain specimens free from flaws. In a recent investigation2 some properties of gamma and alpha manganese were determined by studying the ductile electrolytic metal and determining the changes in its properties as it transformed to the brittle alpha form. These investigations provided an excellent opportunity for following the progress of the transition and studying its mechanism. The results of a series of such investigations are reported in this paper. Procedure Various properties of manganese were determined starting with the metal in the original ductile gamma form and following the subsequent changes in its properties as the metal transformed to the brittle alpha form. These observations were made at various temperatures, the data providing information regartling the mechanism of the transformation as well as the effect of temperature 011 the transition rate. Structure and resistivity values gave the most significant results, so this paper is concerned primarily with them. The structure was studied microscopically as well as by X ray diffraction. The resistivity was determined on strips of the metal by measuring the potential drop across a given length of the specimen. Current was passed through the specimen by wires soldered to its ends, and the potential connections were made by wires looped around the specimen near its center. The current was determined by the potential drop across a standard resistor connected in series with the specimen, the potential drop being measured on a potentiometer. In the temperature range from room temperature to 100°C an ordinary drying oven was used to heat the specimen. This was entirely satisfactory except at 100°C, where the time required to heat the specimen was long compared to the transition time, making the initial section of the resistivity curve unsatisfactory. To overcome this limitation, at 100°C and higher a thermostatically controlled oil bath was used to heat the specimens. The block on which the specimen was mountetl was plunged into the hot oil at the start of each test. The heating time was thereby reduced from 5 min. to about 6 sec, and dependable resistivity values could be obtained through 160°C. At this point the whole transition, including the warm-up time for the specimen, required only about 20 sec and it was not considered worth while trying to extend the temperature range further. Aside from the heating problem, the problem of making a sufficient number of accurate resistivity determinations became more and more difficult as the temperature was raised. Using the manually operated potentiometer, 100°C was about as far as it was possible to go. At this temperature and above, a self-balancing photoelectric recording potentiometer was used. Its response was quite rapid, and it proved to be entirely satisfactory all the way through 160°C, where the tests were stopped because of the specimen heating problem rather than any limitation of the potentiometer recorder. The metal used in these tests was prepared at the Salt Lake City laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. The method of preparation is discussed in a paper by Schlain and Prater.3 The sheets were about 2 3/8 by 5 3/16 in. and varied from 10 to 16 mils in thickness. They could be cut readily into pieces suitable for the various tests. X ray and microstructure determinations were made on pieces about 1/8 to 1/4 in. wide and about 1 in. long, while resistivity measurements were made on strips as long as possible and about 55 in. wide. The thickness of each sheet was not uniform over all its surface. This had no bearing on the X ray and microstructure determinations, but sections as nearly uniform and free from flaws as possible were chosen for the resistivity determinations. The gamma manganese was electro-deposited at 30°C, the time of deposition ranging from 5 to 12 hr for each sheet. Oil quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State &apos;A&apos;— Vapor Blanket Cooling—In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage &apos;B&apos;—Vapor Transport Cooling— Termination of the &apos;A&apos; stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage &apos;C&apos;—Liquid Cooling—The &apos;B&apos; stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the &apos;B&apos; stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage &apos; B&apos; because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 21/2-in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and I-in. stream height, and (2) a 1/2-in. orifice and a 31/2-in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was 1/2-in. above the orifice. Some tests were run on an NE 8740, .3,312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been Omitted from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1/8-in. stock to I-in. diam by 4 in. long.

The ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, I took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the " Agent," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. &apos;It was at this pit that the Quincy main shaft was subsequently sunk. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 R., but when cleaned out it was shown to he 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding of white-birch poles, which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softencd rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. The past 20 years has seen a revolutionary change in the testing of materials at elevated temperatures. This has largely been brought about by the practical importance of the creep problem in the design of equipment for operation at high temperatures. The short-time tension test carried out at elevated temperatures has consequently assumed in many cases only a secondary role compared with the longtime creep test. In many problems, however, a knowledge of the short-time high-temperature properties of a metal is essential. To mention a few cases in which this is so, we might include all hot-forming operations such as rolling, forging, etc., the welding problem if residual stresses are to be computed, the development of new alloys for high-temperature service where, in the initial stages, time does not permit of long duration creep tests, and others. Usually a knowledge of the short-time properties is desired, if only to serve as a background against which to compare creep behavior. In conducting short-time high-temperature tests, it has been almost the universal practice to determine stresses based on the original area and strains referred to the original gauge length which is usually chosen as 2 in. It has been pointed out1,2 that one of the reasons that the true significance of certain tensile properties is not understood, which perhaps curtails their usefulness, especially when the material is applied under conditions differing considerably from the test conditions, is that true physical stresses and strains are not determined. It is essential to have a knowledge of true stresses and strains in order to correlate the values present in the tension test with those existing, for example, in hot metal-forming operations and in the general problem of the yielding and failure of metals under combined stress conditions. Stress and strain values based on the original dimensions of the test piece do not exist physically except in the early stages of the test. Since at the present time there is very little information in the literature on true stress-strain relations in the short-time high-temperature tension test it is proposed in the following pages to describe a

THE RELATION OF THE ENGINEER TO RECONSTRUCTION FIFTY-THIRD MEETING OF BOSTON SECTION The fifty-third meeting of the. Boston Section was held April 28. The speaker of the evening was the new president of the Institute, Mr. Howard V. Winchell, who spoke on "The Relation of the Engineer to Reconstruction." He told of the part engineers had played in the war and paid tribute to Herbert E. Hoover as an example of what engineers can do. He said that engineers are not taking enough interest in politics, although it is badly needed as shown by the evidences of Bolshevism even in America. Conditions have suddenly changed; whereas we formerly borrowed money we are now loaning widely to foreign countries and our investments, abroad have to be protected. A committee is badly needed to investigate and determine the actual conditions. The Government has already been invited to cooperate with the Institute along professional lines and this should lead to closer contact between our Society and the Government. Mr. Winchell then went on to describe some of the mining conditions in Russia. He brought out the point that the rich platinum deposits are exhausted and only the poorer sands remain. The largest copper properties average less than 2 per cent. copper and there are some 4,000,000 tons available in .the Caucasus region near Batum. There are approximately 100,000,000 tons of high-grade manganese ore scattered in small deposits in the eastern Ukraine. There are some copper mines in the East, butt they are almost exhausted. The Baku oil field is the second largest in the world and there is probably oil in Persia. There are also manganese in Siberia and coal veins of enormous thickness.

Gold and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,&apos; this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low-temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. Experimental Procedure The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be prepared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsym-metrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for film-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 500°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. General Results The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 + 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the diffraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an LCaverage" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing sornewhat more and somewhat less than so at&apos; pet gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.

We appreciate the results of your efforts in past years, and we anticipate good from your advice and counsel in the future. You are in the vicinity of some of the oldest mining and manufacturing operations in iron in our country. It will be our pleasure to conduct you to a mine which was worked for more than a half century before our country achieved national independence, and to point out to you the spot where the products of this mine were wrought into cannon and shot during the progress of our Revolution. We can show you also a far larger area of mining country than was supposed to exist in this vicinity at that early day. There are, within a radius of thirty miles from this spot, ten mines at least that have been extensively worked, and there are as many more that have been occasionally worked, with a fair degree of success. All the mines that are wrought to any extent produce excellent qualities of iron, while many of them in various combinations produce as good material for the manufacture of steel, car wheels, axles, and many other purposes, as can be found in any country. The old Salisbury iron retains its reputation for tensile strength unsurpassed, when made entirely from the ore of the old mine. The progress that has been made in the development of these mines since the days of the pickaxe, when the product was transported in pounds upon horseback, to those of the steam-engine, which now moves hundreds of tons per day, presents, indeed, a
