The formation volume and volume of the liquid phase of oil and gas obtained from four fields in the San Joaquin Valley have been investigated at pressures, temperature, and gas-oil ratios comparable to those encountered in underground reservoirs. All the fields covered in this investigation yielded a product of a gas-oil ratio in excess of 5000 cu ft per barrel and the gravity of the tank oil for the four fields in question varied between 52° and 63' API. The results of the investigation, together with analytical data concerning the composition of the oil and gas, are submitted in tabular form. Rough correlations of the formation volume as a function of pressure, temperature, and gas-oil ratio and of the retrograde dew-point pressure as a function of gas-oil ratio, temperature, and gravity of tank oil are presented. It was not found feasible to correlate simply the formation volume of the liquid phase as a function of the applicable variable. It is desired to emphasize that these correlations are considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation and for systems of similar nature and composition. Introduction Information concerning the physical properties of mixtures of oil and gas from particular fields have often been employed in predicting the situations obtaining in underground reservoirs. One of the earlier studies of this nature was the work of Beecher and Parkhurst,1 while a more recent study of the Dominguez Field2 presented detailed volumetric data in the two-phase as well as in the single-phase regions. Although these studies were confined to individual fields, their results proved of value in application to other fields. It has recently been shown 3,4 that it is possible in the region of low gas-oil ratios* to correlate the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures from a single geographical area with sufficient accuracy to be of industrial value. For this reason it is considered of interest to submit information concerning the volumetric behavior of oil and gas mixtures from four different fields in the San Joaquin Valley and, in combination with similar published data5 concerning mixtures of oil and gas from the Paloma field in the same area, to show rough correlations between the composition and the behavior of materials from these fields. RESIDENTS of many urban centers are becoming increasingly aware of the obscuring effect of fume and smoke discharge from power, metallurgical, chemical, and other industries; and they, as well as the legislatures of these affected cities, are agitating for cleaner air. Management's most pressing problem is to find an economical way to reduce process effluents in response to the growing pressure from population and legislative demands. The removal must be done, if possible, without handicap to the current operation, since the costs of relocating are often excessive or prohibitive. In fume recovery or disposal, an important item to consider is whether or not the material being discharged has any value. If it has commercial value, the cost of its recovery may offset or aid amortization. For this reason, in making a study of the specific problem in hand, a major factor was the nature of the material emanating from the stack: in particular, its particle size, size range, and its chemical and physical composition, as well as its potential value and utility when recovered (in either a wet or dry state). Should the product have no commercial value, it must be disposed of at minimum cost in a way to prevent recontamination. Initial studies were therefore made to determine stack concentrations and volumes of material evolved from the operations. The next phase of the study concerned the physical and chemical nature of the collected fume. The third portion of this paper describes the wet and dry collector studies undertaken to recover the fume. Cleaning Requirements for Ferroalloy Furnace Operation The basic need for any effluent collection equipment is the highest possible efficiency and the lowest tolerable resistance when the power consumption involved is considered. Since the electric furnace effluent is largely composed of fume of small size (less than 0.5u), it has high light obscuring properties, and even low concentrations will cause some loss of visibility and be evident to nearby residents. The permissible limit for fly ash emission in many cities is based on a weight value (viz, approximately 0.4 grains per cu ft), but the smoke density values are dependent upon a shade of color. In the case of the Los Angeles County code, emission is restricted to pounds per pound of material processed per hour basis (but not exceeding 40 lb per hr for any one given plant operation). If an average particle size of the fume from ferro-silicon alloy electric furnaces is assumed to be 0.4u (as shown later, this is the approximate mean size) and an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft (stp), each cubic foot of stack gas will contain approximately 75x10 10 particles (based on assumed, and confirmed, spherical shape and a standard deviation of unity). When it is realized that the air in metropolitan areas, which are also general industrial areas, contains approximately 5x108 particles, the tremendous light scattering effect of this concentration becomes apparent. Consequently, nearly 100 pct collection would be necessary to equal the average concentration. Fortunately, however, discharge from a high point above ground (50 to 100 ft) will result in at least a thousandfold dilution, or the stack concentration reaching the ground in the foregoing case might result in a ground concentration of ' particles. If the concentration at the source could be reduced by a factor of 100 (99 pct efficiency of collection), then a concentration of 75x10" particles would be diluted to 7.5x10' which would be very satisfactory. An efficiency of 90 pct (factor of 10 decontamination) at the source would result in a discharge of 75x109 articles which upon dilution yields 75x10 which is still 15 times the general air value. Another approach to this consideration is to use the value of concentration of 0.005 grains per cu ft for the value of a visible effluent as cited by Kayse.1 To attain this value with an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft would require an efficiency of 99.5 pct. Since the foregoing value is not based on any reported size of fume particles, it is felt that the numbers' approach given previously is more reliable. These calculations serve to indicate the desirability of thorough cleaning, preferably at the source, and with efficiencies well above 90 pct, preferably above 95 pct (dilution 1:20). One of the most important items in any control program is to reduce the concentrations as close to their sources as possible. The use of better furnace design, deeper coverage over the electrodes, and the prevention of blows or breaks in the surface all help to reduce dissemination; consequently, all of these improvements should be made, if possible, to cut down the effluent load. In addition, in order to minimize the volume of contaminated air that has to be cleaned, the furnace should be enclosed as much as possible. The word ".development," as used in connection with mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. Rut, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character of development that is considered here. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development" as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its " value " should be determined by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation. Mine Development Account Perhaps the majority of mine accountants will agree that the mine development account is that capital account which shows the extraordinary expenditures incurred in opening and expanding the underground workings of a mine until it has reached its normal production, the expenditures being those made for shafts, slopes, rock tunnels, drift mouths and such relatively permanent work; also payments over and above ordinary mining costs made for driving entries, air courses and break-through; for

THE concentration of zinc ore in Wisconsin is a comparatively simple process, although it presents problems that must be overcome in an efficient manner in such a way that installation and operating costs are low. As the ore deposits are small, the first cost of the concentrating plant must be low; while the low margin of profit makes it necessary to have the minimum operating costs. The original mills were copied from those of the Joplin district, as most of them were built and operated by Joplin millmen. These served the purpose well; they made a clean concentrate, which was the chief requirement at that time, as most 'of the mines were' considerably 'richer than the average at the present time, and wages and supplies were also considerably lower. ' The apparatus used at present has changed very little in principle. . The grizzly opening has gradually been increased to 12 in. and sometimes no grizzly 'is used. The crusher, gradually grew in size, the largest crusher has -an opening of about 24 by 13 in. and a 7/8-in. throw on the. eccentric shaft.

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years' operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. The Inspiration ore body was discovered in 1904, but a 50 -ton mill which was installed to treat the disseminated copper ore promptly failed. The original Inspiration Company then gave way to another, backed by W. B. Thompson, which found 40 million tons of ore. Control then passed to Anaconda and Dr. Louis Ricketts took charge as consulting engineer. He abandoned the mill which had been partially built (to the horror of the stockholders, according to Ira Joralemon) and spent a year and a million dollars experimenting with flotation. The first large copper flotation plant was then built and recovered 50% more copper than had previous gravity mills. It, of course, was highly successful and became the forerunner of modern flotation plants. Inspiration is distinctive as the first fully integrated copper operation in the United States. Three open pits supply sulfide ore to the concentrator and mixed oxide and sulfide ore to a vat leaching and electrowinning operation with leached ore also being sent to the concentrator. In addition, dump leaching supplies pregnant solution for scrap iron precipitation. Inspiration has recently constructed an electric furnace smelter and also operates a continuous casting and rod plant. The new primary 54 in. by 74 in. crusher was completed in May of 1972 and replaced an older unit which was in the way of the open pit development. It is of an unusual circular silo design, which permits dumping 0 from two positions at 90 from each other. One dumping position is in line with the spider, while the other one is at right angles to it. A box girder splitter bar hung from the dump pocket slopes downward from the second dump point, across the spider cap, and rests on the pocket bottom. This splitter was not installed to protect the spider but was to aid in distributing wet ore being dumped from that position to both sides of the spider. Any large amount of wet ore delivered to one side of the spider would pack in the crusher cavity. The round front wall of the 18 ft (5.5 m) deep pocket is unlined except for light steel protection at the top, while the straight back wall is lined with vertically positioned railroad rails. Water for dust suppression is sprayed into the pocket through a cluster of 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) nozzles at the back of the pocket. About 5 gpm (19 lpm) of water are mixed with 90 psi (620 kPa) air upstream of the nozzles to produce a fog which is effective in dust control. The 54 in. The history of the salt industry in West Virginia dates back nearly two hundred years; howTever, the history of salt as an important raw material for the chemical industry is much more recent. The earliest record of West Virginia salt was in 1753, when a raiding party of Shawnee Indians attacked frontier settlements in Virginia taking captive a number of the pioneers. One of these, who later escaped and returned to her friends, described how the Indians camped at a salt spring on the banks of the Kanawha River and evaporated the water to obtain a supply of salt to take back to Ohio with them. Settlement of the Kanawha Valley began in 1774, that same year the Battle of Point Pleasant ended the Indian's power in the Ohio Valley; and settlement of the Kanawha Valley progressed rapidly with a consequent increase in the importance of the Kanawha Licks as a source of salt. In those days the evaporation of the brine was a family matter for which the family wash-kettle was commandeered. In 1797, Elisha Brooks erected the first salt furnace in the Kanawha Valley. It consisted of two dozen small kettles set in a double row, with a flue beneath, a chimney at one end, and a fire bed at the other. He obtained his brine at a depth of 20 to 30 ft by sinking hollow logs, called "gums" into the salt lick and dipping the brine with a bucket. His production was about 150 lb a day and sold for 8 to 10 cents a pound. In 1806, the Ruffner brothers, David and Joseph, prospected for and drilled the first well in America using a spring pole and steel chisel bit. After several failures they succeeded, in 1808, in drilling to a total depth of 59 ft where they secured a good flow of strong brine. Most standard drilling tools, jars, casing, and practically all the basic oil well drilling machinery now in use, were developed in the drilling of salt wells. To evaporate this brine, the brothers built a wood-burning furnace similar to that of Brooks but with a better arrangement and with more and larger kettles. When production was started they reduced the price of salt to 4 cents a pound. By 1817, there were some 30 salt furnaces in the Kanawha area. It was in this year that bituminous coal first was used as an industrial fuel. David Ruffner again pioneered the way by converting his furnace for the consumption of coal. This year also brought about the formation of the first trust which controlled production and set a price of 1 cent a pound for the salt.

COPPER reverberatories develop large amounts of exit gases of a temperature in the neighborhood of 2000°F. The gases are not only of a noxious nature but must usually be disposed of at considerable heights above the yard level by a stack. Handling these gases at the temperature mentioned would require rather expensive construction of conveying flues and stack. Moreover, wasting such amounts of heat is certainly most uneconomical. Numerous investigations have indicated that waste heat boilers of the water-tube type are the most practical and economical means for utilizing that heat although the gases are heavily laden with rock dust and copper-bearing slag, which upon cooling form hard deposits on the surfaces of dampers or heat absorbing elements placed in the gas stream. Avoiding Slag and Dust Deposits Based largely on the experience of the paper industry in burning black liquor, a waste heat boiler design was developed a few years ago, providing not only extensive water-wall surfaces for cooling the gases below the fusing point of the slag but also settling out, as far as possible, the solidified particles of slag by creating low gas velocity. Matter carried in a stream of gases or air has a tendency to maintain its original direction upon a change in the direction of the flow of the conveying medium. Reverberatory waste heat boilers installed at Hurley and Morenci endeavored to utilize that tendency for the elimination of slagging particles at predetermined places and before they would strike the tube banks of the boilers. Both installations were successful in minimizing the slagging of boiler tubes and thereby minimizing the need for hand lancing. However, the low draft carried at the up-take of the reverberatory furnaces resulted in a positive pressure in the upper part of the furnace of the waste heat boilers, causing the emission of gases from lancing doors and making more difficult the already unwelcome work of cleaning the boilers by handlancing. Attempting to correct this nuisance as much as possible, the overall height of the Chuquicamata waste heat boilers has been reduced to the minimum considered necessary to obtain proper water circulation in furnace walls. Moreover, it is attempted to solidify slag and dust particles by providing large amounts of water-cooled surfaces before the gas stream reaches super-heater and convection banks of the boilers. INTRODUCTION Project financing has been defined by various authors in this book. It is founded on reliance upon the project's own future cash flows and secondarily on the collateral value of the asset base developed. It is chiefly provided by the banking community who, after an assessment of the risks involved (See Chapter 9) analyse the company's presentation (See Chapter 10) in order to structure a financing package often at a leverage of up to 80% debt. This paper describes the various support and structuring techniques used to delimit and abate the risk components perceived from the banks' experience on project development especially for the period before cash flow is generated (pre completion). ADVANTAGES The advantages of project financing extend beyond the offloading of risks to banks. Among the advantages are the following: 1. Longer loan maturity than conventional, unsecured financing; 2. Loan disbursement and repayment tailored to specific mine; 3. Ability of a joint venture without a "track record" to raise financing; 4. Obtain financing where further direct borrowing (corporate credit) limited by existing indentures; 5. Possibility of arranging finance off-balance sheets; 6. Leverage return on equity; 7. Obtain tax savings with certain project financing structures; and 8. Obtain flexible loan repayment conditions. It can also be said that from the point of view of the company, project financing has certain disadvantages which can be summarised as follows: 1. Perceived higher cost (risk premium) compared with straight corporate credit; 2. More documentation; and 3. Need to negotiate risk-sharing aspects. The main attraction of project financing is the ability to pass certain risks on to the lenders within a flexibly funded transaction. (For a more detailed description of the specific risks see the author's paper at the beginning of Chapter 9. The same risk system is followed here.) The typical project financing has corporate support prior to completion and will usually carefully control the resultant cashflow after completion to ensure the bank does not unnecessarily assume further risks of an equity nature. WITHIN THE COMPANY'S CONTROL Operating Risk This is broken into three interrelated segments for ease of description. Technical Component: This must be specifically addressed if new technology or unproven adaptations are to be used. The banks will have scrutinized the sampling and bulk testing work, perhaps grilling the geological, mineral processing, metallurgical, and mining engineering staff or consultants directly. A number of supports are available such as: TECHNOLOGY GUARANTEE: Either the company itself or the process developer will guarantee that the technology will work for a period of, say, six months to two years after startup. If not, then financial penalties will apply although these are rarely sufficient to repay the loan. Many process developers are weak financially and may have little substance to back such a guarantee.

11.3-1. Basic Principles. Communications systems available for application to surface mining operations can be divided into basic categories. These are: 1. Wired systems requiring some type of metallic conductor 2. Nonwired systems, or those commonly referred to as space-radio systems. Under the heading of wired systems, telephones of the ringer type utilizing magnetos were used in the early pit operations. These are still being used in underground mining operations where calling is accomplished by ringing a code made up of short and long rings. While the standard Bell Telephone Systems have not been applied extensively in underground mining, they have been used in open pit operations but have the disadvantage of using multiple pair cables which must be installed and maintained as the mining operations proceed. They have the advantage however, that when a Bell System is installed in a surface mining operation, communication is available not only within the operation but to any point in the world through the facilities of the world-wide Bell Systems. A second type of communication available is the audio system or public address system requiring the use of a special audio cable made up of shielded pairs for the loudspeaker and microphone circuits. Audio systems have one outstanding advantage over most telephone systems in that, with a high-powered amplifier, a paging call can be heard over and above the high ambient noise conditions usually found at a surface mining operation. However, they have the disadvantage of requiring special cable which must be installed and maintained. Another type of wired communication system available for surface mining is that of carrier frequency equipment similar to that used in underground mining operations. In this system, transmission is accomplished by means of a frequency modulated carrier that travels over the underground trolley wire, the rail on which locomotives travel, and adjacent telephone wires.

The writing that is effective is woven with a he texture into an agreeable pattern; it is free from knots, loose threads, and stray fluff. The instrument that weaves this literary fabric, whether it produce a homely sock or a lordly tapestry, a simple story or a learned treatise, is a disciplined intelligence, as sure as a steel needle, as precise as a swift loom. The simile breaks down at this point, for the product of the pen is instinct with the human spirit and therefore transcends in beauty anything made by a mere machine. If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of transmitting thought from man to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote' but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home. The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The orderly arranging of words and of combinations of words is called 'syntax'; and from the original Greek form, [s?ta???] (suntaxis), is derived the Greek name for an editor,

THE methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins" inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walls until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. . My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the. "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tremolite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit.

Under the name given to this column, I almost feel obliged to write about some aspect of grinding, but I have decided instead to comment on the future of chemical processing. In recent years, I have seen a tremendous interest in extractive metallurgy develop among undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Utah. For example, of the 12 graduating seniors this year, over half seem to prefer extractive metallurgy to physical metallurgy. In particular, they seem to be most interested in hydrometallurgy, or chemical processing, obtaining industrial exposure to the phenomena they study via part-time employment at the Kennecott Research Center and the USBM Metallurgical Center in Salt Lake City. The stimulus has been generated by society itself. Many students are dedicated to the proposition that new technology can circumvent the destruction of our environment, a concept which provides considerable motivation. At the governmental level, the recent concern for the quality of our environment has created action in the area of chemical processing both through imposition of stringent air and water quality standards, and through increased funding for technological research in this area. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gave impetus to this movement when it pointed up the need for development and support of such disciplines as extractive metallurgy, particularly chemical processing, in a recent report on Mineral Science and Technology. The recommendations in the NAS report have prompted governmental action on many fronts, including the Bureau of Mines, and have also given rise to direct legislation in the form of two bills -H. R. 3492 and S. 635- presently before Congress to a mineral engineering education. The report recommends that chemical processing technology (more generally extractive metallurgy) be developed by both new engineering techniques and unconventional chemical techniques such as application of the chemistry of nonaqueous liquids to mineral systems.

The control of autogenous grinding circuits is very similar to the control of conventional grinding circuits. In both circuits the classifier must be operated to achieve the required degree of mineral liberation. Crude ore grade and grinding mill density are important in both circuits. The biggest difference between the control of the two circuits is the pronounced effect that crude ore changes have on autogenous circuits. The importance of crude grade, weight recovery, size and hardness is greatly magnified because the crude ore in the autogenous circuit is also supplying the grinding media. Crude ore sizing is a particularly critical factor in achieving efficient primary autogenous milling. Because of the above, computer control is advantageous for autogenous circuits. Changes in crude ore may necessitate rapid changes in the entire circuit control strategy, and only a computer can facilitate these changes. Also, the techniques of control are very different for conventional and for autogenous grinding. Set-point control is usually satisfactory in conventional circuits, but the multiplicity of varying conditions in an autogenous circuit usually require some type of computer optimizing search routine. Autogenous mills can be separated into two general types. In primary autogenous mills the media is obtained from the mill feed, and in pebble mills the sized pebble media is added separately from the material being ground. The little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90" in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. History. On the discovery of the silver-lead bearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of about 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. In order, to discuss the characteristics of a fan we need, some better way to measure the characteristics of a mine. You all know that. the average anemometer is not very-reliable. Sometimes two anemometers, supposed to be recently calibrated, will differ 50 per cent. Either this or some other committee should standardize measuring methods. The characteristic curves of fans, given by Mr. Huber, would indicate that the forward-curved-blade fan would cause trouble in attempting parallel operation, because two machines will not parallel unless they have dropping pressure characteristics. On the other hand, it is indicated that with the backward-curved blade, they could easily be paralleled. But few mines use more than one fan. Mr. Huber said that if the resistance of the mine was considerably more than contemplated, the quantity of air might be such that the efficiency of the backward-curved fan would be seriously affected, dropping say from 70 to 55 or 50 per cent. In such event, could a difference of speed be selected for the fan that would give the quantity desired at a higher efficiency? L. W. HUBER, Pittsburgh, Pa.-The backward-curved-blade fan responds to change in speed the same as any other fan; if' the speed is doubled, the quantity of air is doubled, the pressure is increased four times and the horsepower eight times. One point not mentioned in the paper is that the backward-curved fan is more efficient than the forward-curved or any other type. If the latter were more efficient, it would pay to install that type and keep the resistance of the mine constant, which is hard to do but it can be done with care. But the total mechanical efficiency of a fan with backward-curved blades is from 10 to 20 per cent. higher.

SUMMARY THE possibility of colloidal deposition of cinnabar has been neglected. In opalite deposits cinnabar exists in particles within or near the colloidal size range. Colloidal processes have been admitted to be operative in hot springs and low-temperature deposits similar to most cinnabar deposits. Mercuric sulphide sols are stable to elevated temperature and pressure, and in nature probably are chiefly affected by the electrolytes in solution, dilution of colloid, and presence of protective colloids as silica. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols to electrolyte is measured, and shown to be greatly increased by dilution and by the protective action of silica. Mercuric sulphide sols follow the Schulze-Hardy valency rule, therefore the precipitating power of complex mixtures of electrolytes can be computed roughly. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols is shown to be greater than the equivalent precipitating power of the electrolytes in a hot spring depositing mercuric sulphide. It is concluded that finely divided or earthy types of cinnabar are colloidally deposited. POSSIBILITY OF COLLODIAL DEPOSITION While colloidal solution has been suggested as a means of transport for a number of minerals, such as the sulphides of antimony, arsenic, and iron, it has been neglected in connection with mercury. This is surprising because there exists positive evidence that cinnabar is present in certain deposits in particles of colloidal or near colloidal size. Colloidal transport could result from either the rapid dilution or neutralization of alkaline sulphide solution bearing mercury coming in contact with deep ground waters, or from colloidal solution near the original source and subsequent flow to the point of deposition unchanged. That the dilution of a mercuric alkaline sulphide solution will precipitate mercury sulphide in colloidal form has been demonstrated a number of times and is easily confirmed. The dilution hydrolyzes the alkaline sulphide Na2S to the corresponding hydroxide and hydrosulphide NaOH and NaHS, and the diminution of the concentration of alkaline sulphide reduces the solubility. It is not the contention of this writer that colloidal deposition is the mode of transport of mercuric sulphide in all mercury deposits, but that the stability of a mercuric sulphide sol, as demonstrated below, in waters that are similar to those that have deposited mercuric sulphide necessitates consideration of this possibility in many deposits, especially those of the hot-spring and so-called opalite type. EVIDENCE OF COLLOIDAL DEPOSITION Ross1 has shown that most deposits of quicksilver are formed at low temperatures and pressures, and probably by solutions that have relatively simple chemical compositions. In most cases the solutions are probably similar to those observed in hot springs, and in two instances-at Steamboat Springs, Nevada, and Sulphur Bank, California-hot springs have been reported by Becker as actually depositing cinnabar.2 Opalite deposits were believed by early investigators to be surface phenomena

As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.

The method of crushing rock by throwing with violence against a resisting surface does not differ in principle from the method of dropping it from a height upon a specially arranged surface. The former is applied in various mills now in use, especially those for reduction of the softer rocks and minerals. The latter is the principle of the Hadsel mill. Probably not new, but Hadsel's method of approach is at least novel, and applicable to hard as well as softer rocks. An elevating wheel raises the rock and drops it from a height upon a hard metal plate or series of plates. The first commercial mill consisted of two units, one on each overhung end of a horizontal shaft, driven by a gear train from a 100-hp. motor. A description of this machine, then in operation at a mine at Georgetown, Calif., was printed in the Engineering and Mining Journal (April, 1932) and need not be repeated here. That machine took mine run ores of a size up to 12 in. and successfully produced a pulp of approximately minus 60 mesh, suitable for flotation. The mills were each 24 ft. in diameter and 3 ft. in width of face. The elevating buckets were formed of steel plates, extending inward from the periphery, inclined to the tangent at 75". This plate was 3 ft., the width of the wheel, and 2 ft. deep. One side of the wheel towards the carrying shaft was closed, the other was open except for the rim plate enclosing the ends of the buckets and extending inward about 5 ft. on the radius. About a 90" arc was immersed in a concrete tank, which acted as a classifier. The breaking plates, seven in number, were carried cantilever through the open side of the wheel. The lowest plate was placed just above the water level. The illustrations (Figs. 1 and 2) make plain the general arrangements. The plant set-up was somewhat crude but worked well enough to demonstrate the weak points of the mill. In this operation it was early apparent that, considering all the factors from delivery of the mine run ore to the final pulp for flotation or cyanida-tion, the Hadsel mill offered possibilities of great simplicity of plant and savings in power. Continuous operation developed mechanical weaknesses, some of which were readily discernible in details of design, some became more apparent as operations progressed.

[NoTE.—-This paper was presented at the Pittsburgh meeting in a partially completed form, and I fully expected to obtain, before the period of its publication, both the data and the leisure required for its completion. The hygiene of collieries was to have been separately considered, and the sanitary conditions of various metallurgical industries connected with mining were to receive an extended discussion, while at the same time the points treated in the paper as prosented at Pittsburgh were to have more ample illustration from American and European sources. Delay in obtaining expected information, and the continuous pressure of professional work, have prevented hitherto the execution of this plan ; and I can now publish only a portion of what I had designed to contribute to the subject. In the meantime this portion, but slightly changed, has been included as a chapter on the Hygiene of Metal Mines in a work entitled Hygiene and Public Health,, edited by Dr. A. H. Buck, of New York. An excellent chapter on the Hygiene of Coal Mines, contributed to the same work by Mr. Henry C. Sheafer, of Pottsville, affords me an opportunity to supply one of the deficiencies above alluded to. Mr. Shearer's chapter contains much material in the way of explanations not required by professional readers; And be moreover devotes a considerable space to the explosive gases, falls of roof, and other causes of accidents to life or limb—a branch of the subject not belonging strictly to bygiene. I therefore make extracts only from his treatise.—R. W. R ] It is convenient to divide mines, with reference to this subject, into two classes, collieries and metal-mines. Subterranean quarries, rock-salt mines, etc., present no conditions requiring them to be separated from the latter class.
