This paper deals with molybdenum modifications of 5140 steel that have the same hardenability but a better tolerance for phosphorus than the AISI-SAE 5140 grade. Lack of toughness in steels with higher than normal phosphorus contents is well known to metallurgists. This problem is troublesome even within normal phosphorus ranges, if the heat treatment or the design of the part or the service is critical. Under such unfavorable conditions and also in the case of phosphorus contents toward the upper side of the commercial range, the use of molybdenum to replace a part of the chromium in 5140 steel provides a factor of safety. The toughness of steel is variously exhibited in different mechanical tests; broadly the term is applied to the capacity of the steel to deform prior to fracture. Defined in this way, toughness is considered to be an inherent quality that depends upon the composition and structure of the steel, and also upon its temperature during deformation and fracture in the test. In the present state of our knowledge, the type of mechanical test needs to be included in any discussion of toughness, because the revelation of this quality in steel depends on the stress state and rate of stressing imposed by the test. In comparing the toughness of one steel with another by laboratory testing, it has long been customary to use notched tests that impose severe constmint to deformation, and then to test over a range of temperatures to obtain the so-called transition. At temperatures above the transition, the steel fails after considerable deformation and absorption of energy. Below the transition, less energy is absorbed as the steel fails largely by cleavage. The transition range itself is characterized by a more or less abrupt change in energy absorption and type of fracture. The conventional V-notch Charpy impact test has been used exclusively in the work covered by this report. For the steels under study, rather sharp transitions are obtained with this test, at testing temperatures that are easily obtained in the laboratory. The position of the transition on the testing temperature scale provides a rather sensitive index of the toughness of the steel, when the steels under study are similar in character as they are in this work. Turning to the metallurgical reasons for the greater toughness of one steel as compared to another, the authors propose to limit the discussion to the small field under study. Only one structural state is considered, tempered martensite of a hardness of about 28 Rockwell C or 269 Brinell. The study deals first with the loss of toughness in AISI-SAE 5140 steel caused by increasing the phosphorus content from about 0.020 to 0.040 pct. A second part of the work deals with counteracting this loss in toughness by replacing a part of the chromium by molybdenum. A series of molybdenum modifications was studied, in each of which the chromium was reduced sufficiently to duplicate the hardenability of 5140 steel. Phosphorus affects the toughness of steel in two ways. An inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing ferrite as compared to low phosphorus ferrite has often been noted. Jolivet and Vidall have shown that phosphorus has the same effect in tempered martensite in chromium steels. The other well known effect of phosphorus is to make steel susceptible to temper embrittlement. Temper brittleness is a loss in toughness brought about by tempering steel within a limited temperature interval somewhat below the A1 temperature. In most of the standard AISI-SAE alloy steels, this temperature interval is approximately 850-1100°F. Either of these types of loss in toughness is easily followed by the shift in the transition temperature obtained with the notched-bar impact test. The data to be presented show the beneficial effect of substituting molybdenum for a part of the chromium in 5140 steel with either moderate (0.020 pct) or high (0.040 pct) phosphorus contents. Both the inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing steel and temper brittleness are counteracted by this use of molybdenum. The work of Jolivet and Vidal mentioned above shows the detrimental effect of phosphorus on the toughness of tempered martensite in the absence of temper embrittlement, as well as the temper brittleness caused by phosphorus. They used two steels, essentially 0.25 pct C-1.4 pct Cr, with 0.044 and 0.013 pct P, respectively. The nonembrittled state was obtained by quenching in oil from 1610°F, then tempering for one hour at 1200°F and quenching in water. In this state the transition temperature range of the low phosphorus steel in the notched-bar impact test was below that of the steel with 0.044 pct P. An additional treatment of 24 hr at 975°F (that is, in the embrittling range) caused both steels to lose toughness, but the high phosphorus steel showed the greater embrittlement. RECENTLY a report has been published on an investigation of the MO-RU system by E. Raub.' In this report it is stated that below approximately 1200°C the system consists of two terminal solid-solution phases and the intervening two-phase field; at 1200°C and above, an intermetallic compound labeled Mo,Ru, makes an appearance. Along with some other little known systems in which it was considered possible for a u phase to form, the Mo-Ru system had been under investigation in this laboratory. Since molybdenum and ruthenium have very high melting points and also since ruthenium is expensive, the investigation was confined to X-ray diffraction by sintered powder compacts. The compositions which were studied were (in atomic percentages): 75 Mo-25 Ru, 67 Mo-33 Ru, 50 Mo-50 Ru, and 25 Mo-75 Ru. All compacts were made from the pure powders, and no chemical analyses were attempted. Each compact weighed about 5 g. All annealing was done in evacuated Vycor capsules, and even though the capsules completely collapsed at 1250°C, they still admitted no air. The results of this investigation in general corroborate the work of Raub. Up to 1150°C the two terminal solutions and the intervening two-phase field were found, and at 1200°C and above an intermetallic compound was found. However, the composition limits of the compound were estimated to lie close to 70 atomic pct Mo rather than 62.5 atomic pct Mo as Raub had reported. At least the X-ray diffraction results indicated that the 75 atomic pct Mo specimen consisted of the molybdenum solid solution plus the compound, while the 67 atomic pct Mo specimen consisted of the ruthenium solid solution plus the compound and the equiatomic composition contained only very little of the compound. The most interesting observation, however, was that the diffraction pattern of the compound was similar to that of the well known u phases, except that unusually large lattice constants were indicated. The d-values, or interplanar spacings, of the diffraction lines (as produced by filtered copper KCX radiation) of the compound are given in Table I, as determined from specimens annealed at 1250°C for 9 hr and then quenched in water. Also shown are the lines of the Mn-Mo u phase as given by Decker, Waterstrat, and Kasper,' the lines of the Fe-Mo a as given by Goldschmidt," and the lines of the Mo-Ru phase multiplied by constants in order to make comparison with the Mn-Mo and Fe-Mo patterns easier. These results indicate that the compound in the Mo-Ru system is apparently isomorphous with the other o- compounds. The rather large lattice constants of the Mo-Ru a phase are acceptable in view of the comparatively large size of the constituent atoms. The data in Table I for the Mo-Ru compound check quite well with those given by Raub, not shown here, though there are some discrepancies between the two sets of data in the estimated intensities of a few lines. Although very little is known at present about this u phase, there are some things which may be pointed out, mainly in comparison with other better known u phases. Even though molybdenum and ruthenium are in the same columns in the Table of Elements as chromium and iron, respectively, the Mo-Ru u phase contains much more molybdenum than ruthenium, while the Cr-Fe u phase centers around or very nearly around the equiatomic composition; furthermore, the Mo-Ru u is stable only above approximately 1200°C, but the Cr-Fe u is stable only below about 825 °C. With respect to its being unstable below 1200°C, the Mo-Ru u is similar to the other binary molybdenum u phases in the Co-Mo and Fe-Mo systems. Similar to the latter two systems, the Mo-Ru u apparently exists over a rather narrow composition range, whereas the Cr-Fe u at lower temperatures is stable over a much wider composition range. The Mo-Ru u thus is closer to the other molybdenum u phases than to the Cr-Fe cr phase. The most striking feature of the Mo-Ru u phase, however, is the absence of any of the transition elements of the First Long Period.

R. G. Minet—The authors' description of the remarkable progress made in the last few years in applying the fluidized solids technique to the problem of lignite drying and carbonization clearly demonstrates that engineering techniques available today may make many processes practical and profitable which a few years ago were considered otherwise. As pointed out in the article, the future of the carbonization step hinges on the value and utilization of low temperature tar. On paper, at any rate, this tar looks like a valuable raw material for the chemical industry to use. Some 50 to 60 pct may be converted to pitch for electrodes, roofing, road tars, and other valuable products; the 25 to 30 pct tar acids could conceivably form a basis for a new low cost resin or plastic of the phenolformalde-hyde type. Yet these materials are so new and dissimilar from available sources that much work must be undertaken by the chemical industry before they will be accepted. Now that the work of Dr. Perry and his colleagues has made a large supply of low temperature tar a real possibility, I would expect the chemical industry to accelerate its work in this field. On the basis of certain data available in the literature it appears possible to produce a more aromatic tar, although in smaller yield, by operating at temperatures in the range of 1300" to 1500°F. Operating a fluidized bed process for lignite at these conditions should be technically possible, at least, and could produce a tar having more familiar characteristics. I wonder if Dr. Parry would care to comment on such a possibility. Incidentally, in our own work on carbonizing coking coals in fluidized beds, using Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia high volatile bituminous coals, we have obtained yields which agree with the correlation given for tar yields vs moisture and ash-free volatile Btu. Our data are slightly under the line, but certainly in the range of the correlation. We have also obtained evidence in support of the authors' statement as to the effect of air on the process. In our pilot plant all the heat required for carbonizing is released by internal combustion of char in the fluidized bed in normal operation. We are also equipped to obtain all carbonization heat by external electric heaters on the shell of the carbonizer while introducing only an inert gas to the process. We note no difference in tar yield or characteristics between the two operations. In the case of the gas, however, it appears that some hydrogen is consumed by the air combustion. We would be interested in hearing in a little more detail about the hot dust and char handling problems at Sandow. Have the authors found char subject to spontaneous combustion? Have they ever tried a coking coal in their pilot plant? V. F. Parry (author's reply)—Production of a more aromatic tar by operation of the carbonizer at 1300" to 1500°F does not appear to be economical. 1) The capacity of a reactor operating at 1500°F would be 30 to 50 pct less than the capacity at 932 °F and the cost of processing would increase materially. 2) The cracking of tar vapors in a reactor requires appreciable time to complete the reactions and it is doubtful that considering the very short time of residence of tar vapors within the reactor (4 to 10 sec after evolution) the basic character of the tar would be changed significantly. This is indicated from the data reported in Table XIV. 3) General studies have shown that it is advisable to operate at the minimum temperature to produce the maximum tar and minimum gas. 4) Operating problems and the maintenance of vessels and reactors, and the hazards of handling hot char, increase with the temperature of carbonization. It is technically possible to operate at temperatures as high as 1500°F, but in my opinion it is not economical or desirable. We believe that the primary tar must be won in the simplest way and then processed alone to change its character for production of desired products. INTRODUCTION Our growing concern for adequate and secure sources of energy and minerals has stimulated vigorous exploration for new sources, research toward a better understanding of geological processes, and development of new extraction technologies. The need for control, or at least prediction, of subsurface fluid flow is important for many of these technologies for example: primary, secondary and tertiary recovery of oil; ground water and waste management; in-situ fossil energy extraction (oil shale, coal, tar sands); and solution mining of uranium, copper and other minerals. These technologies, especially the last two, are characterized by highly complex systems. A partial list of the physical processes occurring would include flow in porous/fractured media, multi-phase and multi-component flow with heat transport, chemically active fluids and soils, tracers, diffusion and dispersion, fracturing and dissolution. A great deal of understanding of how these processes behave and interact can be obtained from models. MODELS Theoretical models are valuable because they: 1) provide a frame of reference for interpreting results of laboratory and field experiments; 2) once validated by experiments, allow a variety of geometries, injection/production strategies, etc., to be examined (at relatively low cost) for efficiency and stability; 3) can provide guidance to the design of experiments and field operations. Most models are based on the fundamental principles of mass, momentum and energy balance. But from this starting point, many paths can be taken. For example, there is the theory of Payatakes (1973) which concentrates on the microscale dynamics. In this approach, the rock or soil matrix is represented by a complex of characteristic channels (such as periodically constricted smooth tubes). Detail of flow within the characteristic channel is calculated very accurately. A difficulty with this model is that description of a representative channel can require several parameters which may not be easily measured. Also, it is not clear how the channels can be combined practically to model a large scale flow. Another type of model is the "global" one described by Bear (1972). Here, the continuum equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy are averaged over a distribution of pore channels, resulting in a set of conservation equations in which the small scale structure of the medium is replaced by quantities such as porosity, permeability, dispersion coefficients and tortuosity. This approach allows computation of large scale flows. However, additional constitutive equations are needed which relate averaged quantities such as permeability to observables such as local saturation, particle size distributions, and others. An important difference between models is the way they handle the momentum equation. Payatakes' model solves the full equation. In others, it is replaced by a simpler relation such as Darcy's law (valid for slow flow rates) or by Forchheimer's equation which extends Darcy's law to higher flow rates. These simple relations can nevertheless match a great deal of experimental data (Dullien 1975). The permeability term which appears in Darcy's law and in Forchheimer's expression has been related to other quantities such as porosity and particle surface area. The Kozeny-Carmen equation is a well-known example, valid for some ranges of porosity and particle sizes and for some materials. Several other semi-theoretical, semi-empirical formulations have been devised, none of which are entirely satisfactory. One goal of researchers has been the ability to predict permeability of a porous material from basic measurable quantities such as grain size distributions without recourse to adjustable parameters. This effort has proceeded from consideration of distributions of idealized, non-intersecting channels, to intersecting channels, to consideration of both distributed pore radii and pore neck radii. This last approach has been used successfully to predict permeabilities (ranging over several orders of magnitude) in sandstones (Dullien 1975). Additionally, studies on explicit networks of channels (e.g., Fatt 1956) and percolation theory (e.g., Larson et. al. 1981) have been used to examine interconnectivity effects in porous media with the hope of eventually being able to predict permeability accurately. To be of more than theoretical interest, a model must be compared s controlled laboratory conditions where boundary and initial conditions and relevant material properties can be accurately determined. Also, extraneous forces can be eliminated so that the interactions between processes of interest can be clearly seen and flow models can be vigorously tested. Introduction In June 1981, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the US coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent." With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. Major Features and Benefits of Nuclear Measurement and Analysis Systems There are many features and benefits of nuclear instrumentation. The major benefit is that nuclear instrumentation is non-contacting. The measuring heads do not contact the process materials. This enables measurements of corrosive, abrasive, or high temperature materials with no loss of performance, reliability, or useful life. Also, there are no moving parts to wear or be fouled by dust or corrosion. Installation is simple and inexpensive. For instance, density gauges are simply clamped onto existing pipe runs. Weigh scales and level switches usually require nothing more than welding brackets to customers' equipment. Once installed, routine maintenance can be performed without interrupting the process. Thus, nuclear instrumentation is highly reliable and easily installed and maintained. The operating life of the instrumentation is virtually unlimited. Principle of Operation Nuclear belt weigh scales, point level switches and density gauges all operate on the gamma-ray transmission principle. A beam of gamma radiation from a radioisotopic source is projected through the process material either on a belt, in a vessel, or in a pipe. Opposite the source is a radiation detector whose electrical output is proportional to the intensity of the radiation it absorbs. Gamma radiation is part of the same electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses light, infrared, and x-rays. In many respects, gamma radiation behaves much like light. However, it is far more penetrating and can be transmitted through considerable thickness of materials that are opaque to visible light, e.g., several inches of steel. Types of Nuclear Instrumentation in Coal Preparation Plants There are four types of nuclear instrumentation presently being employed in coal preparation plants. They are: •Belt Weigh Scales •Point Level Switches •Density Gauges •Coal Analysis Equipment. Each type of instrumentation has a number of potential applications within the plant. What follows is a discussion of three different types of devices and their applications. Weigh Scales In coal preparation plants, weighing instruments are used for measuring material throughput, totalized weight, and batch weight on conveyor belts and other transport equipment. They are also used on drag chain conveyors, vibrating conveyors, and screw conveyors. Weighing is important for receiving the run-of-mine coal, controlling mass flow, scheduling production, and loading and shipping the washed coal to market. There are two basic types of weighing instruments: gravimetric and nongravimetric devices. Gravimetric devices are units which measure the pull of gravity on the material being weighed. Nongravimetric devices are not dependent on the force of gravity on the sample. Nuclear weigh scales are the most prevalent nongravimetric devices used. The nuclear weigh scale works on the same basic principle as other nuclear gauges. The greater the quantity of material placed in the path of a radiation beam, the more radiation will be absorbed by the material. In weigh scales, Cesium 137 source is generally placed above the moving stream of material so that the radiation is directed through the material. An ion chamber radiation detector is on the opposite side of the material. The radiation passing to the detector generates a signal which is inversely proportional to the weight of the material present. This signal is amplified and integrated with the speed of the process flow yielding the weight. The weight is indicated and can be totalized for throughput, batch control, etc. In conclusion, radiation weighing methods have become well established in the coal preparation industry throughout the world. IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

WHEN a deformed polpcrystalline metal is heated to a sufficiently high temperature, a recrystallized structure develops which consists of small, essentially stress-free grains. This transformation is referred to as primary recrystallization. Under certain conditions, on prolonged annealing of the specimens, a type of grain coarsening occurs in which a small number of grains commence to grow at various points by devouring the neighboring finegrained primary structure, which, in itself, exhibits a marked stability toward normal grain growth. This grain coarsening process has been referred to by Burgers' as "secondary recrystallization" or "exaggerated grain growth." Although much work has been done on recrystallization and growth processes, present knowledge of the factors which determine the occurrence and growth of secondary grains is inadequate for the advancement of a theory which accounts for the observed characteristics of this recrystallization phenomenon. In this respect, it would be important to make measurements of the velocity of growth of these large secondary grains. The early work of Feitnecht2 on aluminum showed that the size of secondary grains increased with temperature and time, suggesting that such measurements would be possible. More recently, Burgers1 found that the growth velocity of these grains in aluminum was constant over a large time interval, as is generally found for the growth velocity of primary grains in a uniformly deformed test piece.3-5 It is reasonable to expect that the determination of the activation energy of the secondary growth process might lead to a better understanding of the underlying atomic mechanism. This investigation, therefore, is one of a series primarily designed to measure the growth velocity of secondary grains at various temperatures for silver, copper, and aluminum. It is hoped that these studies along with those of orientation relationships, will establish a sound basis for theorizing as to the origin and nature of the secondary transformation. Experimental Procedure The metal used in the present investigation was high-purity silver (999.9 fine), which was supplied in the form of cold-rolled plates 0.250 in. thick. These plates were annealed at 500°C for 1 hr and then straight-rolled to a thickness of 0.04 in. in three reductions of approximately 45 pct, followed in each case by an anneal at 450°C for 1/2 hr. The 0.04 in. sheets were given a final reduction of approximately 50 pct, which resulted in a thickness of 0.02 in., thereby insuring two-dimensional crystal growth. Individual specimens of this material about 1x3 cm were used for all heat treatments, unless otherwise noted. The annealing was carried out under an atmosphere of argon in an Inconel tube furnace whose temperature was controlled to within -+2°C. Metallographic examination of the secondary transformation was accomplished by mechanically polishing the specimens on one side to approximately one half their thickness through 2/0 metallographic emery paper, and then electrolytically polishing in a solution of potassium ferrocyanide and sodium cyanide. With a current density of approximately 20 amp per sq dm, the time required to obtain a satisfactory surface varied from 3 to 5 min. Standard potassium bichromate was used to etch the electrolytically polished surfaces. A heavy etch with this solution produced a sharp contrast between the secondary grains and the fine-grained primary structure, darkening the latter while leaving the large secondary grains bright. All area measurements of the secondary crystals were made with a planimeter on enlarged tracings of the grains.

Recent work on grain growth in high purity aluminum and in a solid solution type alloy of aluminum and magnesium1 showed that the isothermal increase of the average grain diameter D with time follows the equation D = K(tg + A)2 Eq 1 Here tg is that portion of the total annealing time 1, which is available for grain growth, that is the annealing time less the time necessary for complete recrystallization. The parameters A and n depend only on the temperature. A has the dimension of time, and is usually of the same order of magnitude as the time for recrystallization: R. In some instances R may be substituted for A in Eq I. This is the case for example at long periods of annealing or at high temperatures, where both A and R become small in comparison with t. In such instances Eq I is simplified to D = K, tn Eq 2 For high purity aluminum the exponent n increases in the ratio of about I to 5 in. the temperature range of 350' to 6w°C. 70-30 brass has been long known to exhibit grain growth of the continuous type, such as occurs in pure metals. For this reason, it was of interest to determine whether grain growth in brass also follows Eq I and 2 as it does in aluminum. Isotherma1 grain growth data for 70-30 brass were published in recent years by R. S. French2 and by H. L. Walker.' Fig I shows a log D vs. log t plot of French's data, together with the 500, 600 and 700°C data by Walker for 42.8 pct reduction by rolling. In such a log D vs. log t plot Eq 2 corresponds to a straight line with a slope of n. As seen in Fig I, the data of French and the 600°C data of Walker can be represented by straight lines. However, the 500 and 7c0°C data of Walker give curved lines and the average slope of his 500°C line is very different from the slope of the line representing French's data for the same temperature. Furthermore the curvature of the 700°C line suggests a tendency for grain growth to stop after 8 hr. If confirmed, this would constitute a definite deviation from Eq 2, not explainable on the basis of the specimen thickness effect found in high purity aluminum.' Walker's specimens were 0.125 in., or 3.18 mm thick, while the deviation occurs at a grain size of approximately 0.4 mm. A further point of divergence arose recently, when J. E. Burke suggested4 on the basis of Walker's data, that, instead of Eq 2, grain growth in 70-30 brass follows the equation D - D, = K . tgn Eq 3 Here D, is the grain size as recrystallized at the temperature in question. Although it was possible to show5 that, for pure aluminum, for which isothermal grain growth has been carefully investigated, Eq 3 is incompatible with the experimental facts, the situation remained somewhat obscure with respect to 70-30 brass. Isotherma1 grain growth data for 70-30 brass were published in recent years by R. S. French2 and by H. L. Walker.' Fig I shows a log D vs. log t plot of French's data, together with the 500, 600 and 700°C data by Walker for 42.8 pct reduction by rolling. In such a log D vs. log t plot Eq 2 corresponds to a straight line with a slope of n. As seen in Fig I, the data of French and the 600°C data of Walker can be represented by straight lines. However, the 500 and 7c0°C data of Walker give curved lines and the average slope of his 500°C line is very different from the slope of the line representing French's data for the same temperature. Furthermore the curvature of the 700°C line suggests a tendency for grain growth to stop after 8 hr. If confirmed, this would constitute a definite deviation from Eq 2, not explainable on the basis of the specimen thickness effect found in high purity aluminum.' Walker's specimens were 0.125 in., or 3.18 mm thick, while the deviation occurs at a grain size of approximately 0.4 mm. A further point of divergence arose recently, when J. E. Burke suggested4 on the basis of Walker's data, that, instead of Eq 2, grain growth in 70-30 brass follows the equation D - D, = K . tgn Eq 3 Here D, is the grain size as recrystallized at the temperature in question. Although it was possible to show5 that, for pure aluminum, for which isothermal grain growth has been carefully investigated, Eq 3 is incompatible with the experimental facts, the situation remained somewhat obscure with respect to 70-30 brass. IN extension of a suggestion already made to account for certain features observed in the Juneau gold-belt in southeastern Alaska,' it is the object of the present paper to indicate in detail certain conditions in which deformation of rocks under their own weight might lead to the production of fractures in which veins could be deposited. A direct, uniformly-distributed pressure of sufficient intensity applied to an elastic brittle mass offering strong resistance to deformation produces rupture. In a material of ideal properties the surfaces of rupture under such pressure would be shearing planes inclined at 45° to the line of force, unless there be preliminary deformation, in which case this angle would be greater than 45°. This general conclusion, resting upon ana¬lytical mechanics, is completely supported by the results obtained by Daubrée in experiments upon the deformation of wax and resin prisms under compression. Let us then first con¬sider one of Daubrée's diagrams. In the case illustrated in Fig. 1, four sets of fractures in two appproximately right-angled pairs (that is to say, in conjugate sets) were produced by end-wise compression of the square cross-sectioned prisms. These fractures cut the axis of compression at approximately equal angles, not varying greatly from 45°. The location of the four sets of fractures is obviously determined by the shape of the prism, since the material in each corner acts in a way as a buttress, permitting the bulging to take place most readily on the sides. A CHAPTER of appealing interest was added to the industrial history of the Southwest early in June, when the War Production Board gave final approval to the erection of a blast furnace, a battery of coke ovens, an ore-beneficiation plant, and other facilities for the production of pig iron in northeastern Texas, just north of the East Texas oil field. For many years the people of Texas and adjoining states have cherished the ambition and desire that eventually an iron and steel industry drawing upon local mineral resources would be established to serve Southwestern markets. The existence in this vicinity of valuable deposits of iron ore, limestone, and coking coal has been known in a general way for many years, and efforts have been made from time to time to use them in the production of iron. The present development promises to bring to realization the dreams of the men who have visualized what the establishment of this basic industry would mean to the region.

oriented crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were rolled to reductions of 10 and 70 to 97 pct at room temperature. Similarly oriented crystals were deformed in tension. Dislocation substructures of the deformed crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of silicon on the formation of substructures. Pole figures were obtained to relate orientation changes to substructure. When rolled 10 pct, the iron crystals and the 3 pct Si-Fe crystals formed cells, 1 and 0.2 u in diameter, respecliuely. Cells were absent in the higher-silicon crystals. Extended dislocations and possible stacking faults were observed in the 6.25 pct Si-Fe crystal rolled 10 pct and annealed at 650°C. The stacking-fault energy was estimated to be 20 ergs per sq cm. Rolling to 70 pct resulted in the formation of sub-bands (0.9 µ wide) ill the iron crystals and transition bands (containing 0.2-µ-wide subbands) in the 3 pct Si crystals. No subbands formed in the 5 pct Si-Fe crystal until it was ankzealed. SliP occurred on (112) planes ill tension. The slip traces on the 3 pct Si crystal were wary while those on the 5 pct Si crystal wvere straight. The strain-hardening coefficient for the 5 pct Si crystal was nearly zero. Cells did not form, at least at elongations up to 10 pet. The results suggest that cross slip of iron is restricted by additions of silicon beyond about 3 pct possibly by formation of immobile extended dislocations. IN a previous paper' the authors described the substructures developed in (100)[001]-oriented crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe which were rolled to reductions of 10 to 90 pct at room temperature. At low reductions (10 to 20 pct) cells, approximately 0.2 to 0.3 ja in diameter, were formed. The cell walls consisted mainly of edge dislocations. With increasing reduction (up to 50 pct) the cells were seen to elongate in the rolling direction. In certain regions of the crystal there were significant reorientations which were characterized as rotations about an axis normal to the (100) or rolling plane. These regions were called "transition bands". The regions in which there were no reorientations were called ('deformation bands". At reductions of 60 to 70 pct the elongated cells in the transition bands became sub-bands separated by low-angle tilt boundaries with angles of disorientation of about 2 deg. The elongated cell structure in the deformation band was replaced by a general distribution of dislocations. It was noted that the width of the subbands in the transition bands remained 0.2 to 0.3 µ; i .e., the width of the subbands was the same as the initial cell diameter for reductions up to at least 70 pct. From this, and from considerations of the mechanism of formation of the transition bands,' it was concluded that the subbands evolved directly from the initial cells. In order to check this conclusion, it was decided to examine the relationship between initial cell diameter and width of subbands produced by large rolling reductions. Cell size is known to be dependent upon the temperature of deformation.2,3 However, preliminary experiments with 3 pct Si-Fe crystals indicated that the change in cell size with increasing temperature of deform,ation was not sufficient for the present purpose. On the other hand, cell diameters generally reported for iron deformed at room temperature2'3 range from 1 to 2 p, a factor of 3 to 10 larger than the cells in 3 pct Si-Fe rolled to 10 pct reduction,' indicating the possibility of a marked dependence of substructure (at least in terms of cell size) on the amount of silicon in iron. Thus, the investigation was enlarged to include the study of the effects of varying silicon content on substructure in lightly rolled as well as in heavily rolled crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si. The crystals used in this study all had the same orientation, (100)[001], with respect to rolling plane and rolling direction. These were rolled to reductions of from 10 to 97 pct and the substructures determined by electron transmission microscopy in both the rolled state and after annealing. In addition, stress-strain curves were obtained from (100)[001]-oriented crystals of iron and 3 and 5 pct Si-Fe to determine the effect of silicon on tensile properties. The dislocation substructure of the tensile specimens was also determined for Samples pulled to 2 and 10 pct elongation at room temperature for comparison with the substructures produced by rolling. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystals with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were prepared by annealing 0.012-in.-thick sheets of high-purity Si-Fe in purified argon at 1200°C to effect growth

When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

IT is unlikely that any oil field has ever threatened the future course of the oil industry as does Kettleman today. It seems that nature has striven to outdo herself in combining in this field every possible factor conducive to a tremendous production of the petroleum product in greatest demand-gasoline. This field already has 13,700 acres of proved land and an oil zone of known thickness of 1400 ft. It has wells yielding several thousand barrels of oil of virtually motor fuel grade, together with millions of cubic feet of gas at almost unheard of pressures. The field would have been the. answer to an oil man's prayer in times of under-supply, but now it is the oil man's nightmare, for drilled in -the manner of most other fields and without regard to available markets for oil and gas, the greatest physical and economic losses in the his¬tory of the oil industry will result.

The general features of the constitution of the B-Pt system were determined using standard rnetal-lograph~c, thermoanalytic, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Three compound were found. Two of these, Pt3B and Pt,B, are formed by peritectic reactions at 523° and 890°C, respectively. The third, Pt3B,, is congruently melting with a flat maximum at 940°C but decomposes eutectoidally in to Pt,B ant1 boron nt - 600° to 650°C. THE low-temperature allomorph of boron (red, simple rhombohedra1 a boron) is of scientific and technological interest as an elemental semiconductor.' However, the studies of this material have been hampered by its reported instability above 1200"~ which precludes crystal growth from the melt (mp - 2200°C). Crystallization from platinum solutions has been suggested as an alternative crystal-growth technique, but has met with only limited success.' The technique depends upon the existence of a significant difference between the eutectic temperature and the transformation temperature of boron. In order to clarify the conditions for further crystal-growth experiments, we found it desirable to redetermine the main features of the B-Pt phase diagram since previous reports on the system1'5'6'7 are in marked disagreement. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods used were thermal analysis, metallography, X-ray analysis, and, to a lesser extent, measurements of microhardness. Most of the alloys were prepared from spectrograph-ically standardized boron obtained from Johnson-Matthey &Co., Ltd. (212 ppm impurities, exclusive of carbon and oxygen) and platinum powder obtained from F. Bishop & Co. (200 ppm impurities, mainly of other platinum group metals). Some alloys were also prepared with very high-purity, float-zone refined boron (99.9999 pct obtained from "Wacker Chemie" and extrahigh-purity platinum (99.999 pct) obtained from Johnson-Matthey & Co., Ltd. The reported results did not depend on the choices of these starting materials. Five-gram alloy specimens containing 10, 20, 25, 27.5, 30, 33.3, 34, 35, 37, 37.5, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, and 80 at. pct B were made by melting the elements together in boron nitride crucibles using rf heating of a graphite susceptor, either in vacuum or under high-purity argon. All alloys were heated to at least 1800°C for -5 to 15 min. Most of the alloys did not wet the crucibles when the latter were outgassed by preheating under vacuum. In any event, no weight loss was detected after melting, and the nominal composition was assumed for all specimens. Thermal analysis on 2.5-g samples were carried out in boron-nitride crucibles under a vacuum of 5 x X torr. The apparatus was heated in a "Kan-thal A 1" wound furnace, which limited the maximum temperature to about 1100°C. The output of the indicator thermocouple was fed to a dc recorder with a 1-mv full-scale span and an adjustable zero. The apparatus was calibrated repeatedly, using the freezing points of high-purity aluminum, silver, and gold. The results justified the use of the NBS voltage vs temperature tables for Pt/Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouples. All thermal analyses were run at least twice and both the heating and cooling effects were recorded. Most of the alloys had a very strong tendency to supercool. However, the use of mechanical vibration permitted reproducibility within *5°C for all alloys, except in the region around 40 at. pct B. Only the cooling effects are plotted in Fig. 2, since they appear to be more reliable. For metallography, the alloys were cut with a diamond cutting wheel, cast in a polymethacrylate resin, ground and polished with diamond paste, and etched with dilute aqua regia, a common etch for platinum alloys. Both copper and molybdenum radiation were employed to obtain X-ray diffraction data using Debye-Scherrer cameras and a "Norelco" diffractometer Diffractometry with high scanning speeds (1 deg per min) using nickel filtered CuK, radiation was used to identify the main regions of the diagram. However, molybdenum radiation was used for the detection of boron, since the latter showed very strong absorption and fluorescence effects with CuK, radiation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Three intermediate compounds, corresponding to the compositions Pt3B, Pt2B, and Pt3B2, were found in the system. During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative. Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter

King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

UNEMPLOYMENT no longer finds its cure in pros-perity. Not only is there surplus labor in over-developed industries -like coal -mining, but more and more man, power is being released by technical im-provements in production. A new problem in industry has arisen: What is to be done with the labor dis-pensed with by better methods and more highly de-veloped equipment? Are luxury industries the logical outlet for our new unemployed? There has been a marked decline in employment in the manufacturing industries during 1927. Its extent is shown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics index, which receded from a high of 91.4 in March to 87.3 in October, with an estimated figure of approximately 85 in De-cember. This was a drop between the high and low points in the year of about 7 per cent, which means roughly that at the close of 1927 there were approxi-mately 600,000 fewer persons employed in manufac-turing industries than in March -of 1927, and upward of 400,000 less than in December, 1926. Does this de-cline reflect a swing toward industrial depression? Paradoxically it does not; the cause of unemployment at this time does not lie in a lack of prosperity, but rather is largely traceable to prosperity. Capital has been abundant and has gone back into production in the form of great increases in mechanization and new processing. Management is more than ever on the alert to improve methods, as well as to cut costs through reduction of personnel. Properly applied incentives and employee cooperation also have increased produc-tion per man. A new phenomenon in the industrial world-technological unemployment-is the result. Of course, there are added to those unemployed be-cause of the reasons just considered those affected by the coal strike, the period of shutdown at the Ford plants, and the reduction in expenditures by railroads and public utilities. This whole situation suggests that the problem of unemployment is not entirely solved by ironing out seasonal variations or by achieving business prosperity.
