DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

Not many accounts of mining methods or labor conditions in the mines in early days can be found; all that have seemed to be authentic have been included in the preceding chapters. In practically every field opened before 18.10 the first coal was recovered by quarrying, or strip mining, the operations, of course, being by hand and on a very small scale; new places were opened as soon as mining became difficult or expensive. Where it became necessary to drift into the hillsides, the first coal was taken out by sleds, and later by small wagons, the power being supplied by the miner, often assisted by dogs. Wooden rails then came into use with small cars running on them. These cars were very small, usually holding only a few bushels; in the Belleville, Illinois field as late as 1863 cars having capacities of 10, 12, 14 and some as large as 30 bushels were in use. It was not until late in the 1830's that horses or mules came into use for haulage purposes in the Pittsburgh region, although some had been used in the Richmond, Virginia field at an earlier date. Coal was usually undercut by hand and wedged down, until explosives came into general use, and in nearly every field the coal was forked into the cars, the fine coal, or slack, being left in the mine. Hours worked were very long, but few records remain to show what they were at different places and times; there was undoubtedly a great variation between districts and mines. Roy stated a miner could often produce 5 or 6 tons in a day of 8 or 9 hours in a 5 or 6 foot seam, but in another seam possibly could mine only 3 1/2 to 4 tons. He estimated an average day's work in a four foot seam at about 3 1/2 tons.1 In a strike in the Belleville field in 1863 it was found that an average skilled miner in the field could probably produce 4 to 5 tons a day.2 This was only the coarse coal loaded and did not include slack. In 1873, a coal undercutting machine was tried at a mine about two miles from Brazil, Indiana, said to be the first coal machine ever invented in the United States. It was run by a 5 H.P. steam engine (later to be changed to compressed air), and consisted of an iron rim, four feet in diameter with movable steel teeth placed about one foot apart. The rim

FOR sixty years-in fact, ever since the inception of the basic steelmaking process -basic slags have been the subject of study by chemists, metallurgists and petrographers, with the purpose of providing a better understanding of the reactions between the slag and the metal during the refining process. The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicomponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the 1880's, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,' therefore they will not be reviewed here. PETROGRAPHIC STUDY The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petrographically a great number of basic steel- making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O5. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO,Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some slags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. Locality and Geological Occurrence. The Alpine region of Southwest Colorado, comprising the San Juan and Uncompaghre Mountains, is composed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic sehists, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompaghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this direction, the Uncompaghre receives from the east the Red Cafion Creek. Following up the narrow caftan we find the section through white.. sandstone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-liko character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, and we have entered crystalline rock-porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandstone, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is semifused. Ascending still higher, a small

IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

A simple graphical technique is presented for rapidly determining the ratio of resolved shear stress on slip systems in single crystals to the applied stress (Schmid factor) for various simple states of stress. Master plots are presented which, when used in conjunction with an appropriate stereo-graphic projection, allow one to determine the Schmid factor for all slip systems in a crystal of given orientation. It is shown that one such plot suffices for simple tension or compression, flex-ural bending, and biaxial compression, while a combination of two different plots must be used for torsion and simple shear. STUDIES of the deformation behavior of single crystals are most valuable when the applied stresses are resolved onto the various slip systems of the crystal. A careful study of the available slip systems and proper selection of the state of stress used and the specimen orientation can then yield quantitative information about the probability of specific dislocation reactions, the strength of barriers to plastic flow, and the mechanisms of yielding and flow in general. It is the purpose of this work to analyze some common states of stress used in deformation studies and to present a simplified way of determining for these cases the ratio of the resolved shear stress on the slip systems to the applied stress (Schmid factor). I) CALCULATIONS We first define two orthogonal coordinate systems: one based on the specimen geometry (a right circular cylinder of radius, R, is considered here) and one based on the particular slip system of interest. The unit vectors and angles specifying the two coordinate systems and the relationship between them are listed in Table I. The relationships among the various angles and unit vectors are shown on a stereographic projection in Fig. 1. As the world's demand for iron ore increases and available sources are depleted, increasing attention will be centered on deposits in the Quebec and Labrador portions of the Labrador Trough. Improvements in the beneficiation of low grade iron ore stimulate exploration for deposits amenable to concentration. This study is centered on the Mt. Wright-Lake Carheil area, lying between Wabush Lake and Mt. Reed in Quebec. Described in detail are the general lithology, structural and economic geology, and mineralogy of the iron-formation. The iron ore province of Quebec and Baffin Island extends from the southern shore of Baffin Island southeasterly through the Labrador Trough to Matonipi Lake, approximately 185 miles northwest of Seven Islands. (See Fig. 1.) Future geologic field studies will very likely extend the limits of the province to include the ferruginous and associated rocks of the Lake Mistassini area. At present, only the deposits near Knob Lake and Lake Jeannine (Mt. Reed) have been brought into production although in the near future several other properties including those at Wabush Lake will commence operations. Within the next decade or so, as the world's demand for iron ore increases and available sources are depleted, this region will undoubtedly become a major mining district. Initial reports of iron-rich rocks in Labrador date back to the investigations undertaken by A. P. Low near the turn of the century. During the ensuing years the country was prospected chiefly for precious and nonferrous base metals because of its inaccessibility and the low tenor of the iron ore. In 1945 an evaluation of the direct shipping ores near Knob Lake indicated that sufficient reserves were present to justify the enormous capital expenditure required to bring the deposits into production. Initial open-pit mining began in 1954 following the construction of a townsite, a 360-mile long railway to Seven Islands, and an elaborate loading dock. Recent improvements in the beneficiation of low-grade iron ore have stimulated widespread exploration for deposits amenable to concentration, particularly along the southwest extension of the Trough. The Mt. Wright-Lake Carheil area, bounded by longitudes 66O45' and 67 30' west and latitudes 52 30' and 52 45' north, is a nearly rectangular tract of slightly less than 500 sq miles. It is in Saguenay County, 174 miles north-northwest of Seven Islands (see Fig. 1). Except for the periods of the spring breakup and the fall freeze up, the area is readily accessible by air.

A description of tests made by a committee of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council to determine whether velocity of impact affects the formation of Neumann bands. FOREWORD Not infrequently, in the case of the failure of a metal structure, such as a bridge, tank, airplane, gun carriage, etc., a doubt arises whether the failure was due, among other causes, to the effect of an overburden or of an explosive maliciously or accidentally exploded in contact with it. As few means of discriminating between the effects of these causes have been known and these means were of a rough qualitative character, it was surprising to find in the record of an inquiry into the failure of a structure, the statement that, by observations on the Neumann bands in the structure, it was possible to determine the speed of breakage in the metal and to distinguish between a fracture caused by an explosion and one caused by an ordinary mechanical strain. Such a criterion, if well proved, was of value to the explosives experts of the Bureau of Mines, the Ordnance Department of the United States Army and the Bureau of Ordnance of the United States Navy, but search showed no record of it in the literature nor did any of the metallurgists and metallographers consulted know of any data on which such a criterion could be based having been assembled and critically studied. However, it was universally held that there was promise in the idea and that there existed unique facilities at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh for the preparation, under definitely known conditions, of material for study by metal-lographers, and that material of value might also be obtained from the proving grounds of the Army and Navy. Therefore, with the approval of the Director of the Bureau of Mines and the Chiefs of Ordnance of the War and Navy Departments, the Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, on April 12, 1919, appointed a Committee on the Investigation of Neumann Bands, which has since been engaged in this study and which, after some slight change in its personnel, consists now of the following: Dr. William Campbell, Advisory Metallurgist, Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department. This paper describes a computerized simulation system developed by KETRON, Inc., in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines. The system is designed for use by mine managers and engineers rather than computer specialists and allows the novice user to arbitrarily create room-and-pillar mine plans, with the computer illustrating the simulation of face activities on a video screen. Extensive visibility of the simulation is provided by visual display of the machine elements and their movement in the section to accommodate the extraction, roof control, place changing, and haulage operations. Performance statistics are also generated to analyze the operations. Both conventional and continuous mining methods can be simulated. In addition to simulating arbitrary scenarios, the system can also be used to display actual time-studied operations and maintain a file of these activities. Practical applications and case studies are provided in the paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the system. The system is designed to operate on a desk-top mini computer and is currently installed on a Hewlett-Packard 9854B system with 450 K bytes of memory.

THE first record of the quarrying of dimension stone in Minnesota dates back to 1820 when limestone was quarried locally for part of old Fort Snelling. Limestone quarries were operated at Stillwater, Mankato, and Winona as early as 1854. Granite was quarried first at St. Cloud in 1868, and within a few years thousands of tons were shipped to widespread points. Rough dimension stone for large buildings furnished the first important market, but beginning in 1886 paving blocks were in demand. The largest shipment was in 1888, when 1925 cars were shipped from the St. Cloud area. Quartzite was quarried first at New Ulm in 1859 and somewhat later at Pipestone and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota: The productive dolomite quarries at Kasota were opened first in 1868 and have continued as large producers of a variety of stone to the present time. At present, the industry is controlled by relatively few operators, and for that reason detailed figures on dimension stone are not released for publication. A general idea may be obtained from the data in the Minerals Yearbook for 1948. The figures for total stone produced in Minnesota are 1,804,000 tons valued at $5,090,652. Probably the largest item in the latter figure is received from dimension stone. A better idea of the situation, in relation to the country as a whole may be gained by using the data for 1930 when more companies were operating in Minnesota, and complete figures were published. In that year Minnesota produced granite valued at $2,668,119 and ranked third among the states in value. Minnesota's production of granite was almost exclusively for dimension stone. In the same year Minnesota produced 300,000 tons of limestone (dolomite) valued at $840,860, and this likewise was mainly dimension stone. In finished limestone Minnesota ranked second among the states in 1930. Sandstone and minor amounts of quartzite are the only other dimension stones that have been produced in Minnesota, but the quarries are now inactive. The commercial stones of Minnesota have been described in two reports by Bowled and by Thiel and Dutton.2 The early history of quarrying in Minnesota and extensive notes on the various rocks are given by N. H. Winchell.3 Small limestone and dolomite quarries were numerous throughout the area of Paleozoic rocks in southeastern Minnesota. Early production was largely dimension stone. With the increased use of Portland cement, most of these ceased production, and today only those at Kasota and Winona remain in operation. In recent years many quarries have reopened and new ones started, but these are devoted to the production of crushed rock and agricultural lime. As the application of modern quarrying and finishing methods increased, small companies in the granite business have dropped out, and the remaining companies have modernized their plants, purchased old quarries, and opened up new ones, thus furnishing a wide variety of granites suitable for most of the customary uses. It is the purpose of this review to present notes on' the geology and operations of each of the quarries now operating within the state. Granites and Related Igneous Rocks The term granite as used in this report includes granites, gneisses, diorites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks. The granites of greatest economic importance are found in three widely separated regions, see Fig. 1. 1-Central Minnesota in the region of the city of St. Cloud, 2-the upper Minnesota River valley region, 3-the northeastern portion of the state, commonly referred to as the Arrowhead region. The St. Cloud Region: The rocks of the St. Cloud region are mainly granites and related rock types such as monzonites and quartz diorites. The stones may be grouped into three major types, namely, pink granite, red granite and gray granite. Most of the pink granite occurs in the area to the southwest of St. Cloud. The rock is best described as stone with large pink crystals set in a finer grained black and white background. THE work of Klier and Lyman1 on the bainite reaction has led to the full description of this reaction for medium-carbon low-alloy steels. Certain experimental data reported by Klier and Lyman appear, however, to be improbable of obtaining in very high-carbon steels. The study herein reported consists of an analysis of the transformation characteristics of a 3 per cent chromium, 1 per cent carbon steel by means of X-ray and metallographic methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the bainite reaction in this steel is more complicated than that reported by Klier and Lyman for the low-carbon low-alloy steels. However, the mechanism of bainite formation in this steel appears to be essentially the same as proposed for the low-carbon low-alloy steels with the modification that the first volumes to transform are carbon-rich rather than carbon-poor. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The analysis of the steel studied was: Cr, 2.89; C, 1.02; Mn, 0.33; Si, 0.35; S, 0.012; P, 0.020. The stock was received from the Carpenter Steel Co. in rolled bars. Specimen Preparation Specimens were austenitized at 1200°C. (2192°F.) for 25 min. in purified nitrogen. The resultant A.S.T.M. austenite grain size was 0-1. Isothermal transformation was allowed by quenching the specimens into liquid metal baths controlled to ±5°C. at 540°C. (1004°°F.) and above, and to ±2°C. at 490°C. (914°°F.) and below. Following the desired degree of transformation all specimens were water quenched. Metallographic Examination Specimens 1/4 in. round by 1/4 in. were used for metallographic examination. Etchants used were Vilella's reagent (1 gram picric acid, 10 ml. hydrochloric acid to make l00 ml. ethyl alcohol solution) and alkaline sodium picrate (electrolytic). Vilella's reagent was effective in revealing all microconstituents, while the alkaline sodium picrate developed the carbon-rich structures or carbides only. X-ray Examination Two X-ray techniques were used-the Debye-Scherrer method and a back-reflection method. The small specimens necessary for the Debye-Scherrer method were austenitized and then allowed to transform, or were cut from the larger metallographic specimens. The metallographic specimens were used for the back-reflection X-ray analysis. When it was desirable to determine the structure of the carbide present, sliver specimens were electrolytically etched to develop a carbide coating, then were exposed in the cameras. This technique was frequently necessary to allow positive identification of the carbide.

THE complete statistics of zinc-ore production in the United States for 1916 are not yet available. The following figures are, therefore, only approximate. The total production of concentrates for this year, including New Jersey and Tennessee, amounts to 1,280,000 tons. Of this tonnage, five mines produced approximately 536,000 tons, or about 42 per cent. The remaining concentrates came mainly from the "Valley States," Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The 1,280,000 tons of concentrates represent about 25,000,000 tons of crude or run-of-mine ore. Of the five mines producing the 42 per cent., the dimensions of three are approximately 25 by 1,500 by 2,000 ft. (7.6 by 457 by 610, m.) or more. Tour of the five mines are undoubtedly veins in the common acceptance of the term. They are located in great vein systems. The mines of "Valley States" have not, so far, been classed as veins; simply as "secondary deposits." The origin of these secondary deposits has been a warmly debated subject. Many geologists contend that they are the results of leaching from overlying and from adjacent rocks carrying but traces of zinc, these traces leached out and deposited in favorable loci. If this theory is correct, deposition is strictly limited to shallow depths. No volume of ore comparable to that of "true fissure veins" is to be expected. Just what this means to the future of zinc mining in these States is here indicated. The total zinc areas of these States amounts to about 9,124- sq. miles (23,631 sq. km.).- Assuming that 10 per cent. of this total will be more or less productive, there are 912 sq. miles (2,362 sq, km.) of "mineral? ground. The average depth of the operated mines is something like 100 ft. or less. In Bulletin 606, U. S. Geological Survey (1915), p. 202, Siebenthal makes the following statement: "The writer is informed by William Waugh, one of the drillers of the Stone City well, that cuttings from other wells which he drilled in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Kan., have shown galena and sphalerite taken from a depth of 591 ft. (180.14 m.) and that the showing of ore at some places would be considered good enough to justify the sinking of a shaft had it been found in the Joplin district and at shallower depths." In some fields the problem of mud fluid is simple and easy of solution. But in the Ventura Avenue field the acquisition and disposal of good drilling mud is not the least of the problems that confront the operator. In fact, mud fluid in the Ventura Avenue field is a very important factor in the drilling of the wells. It is quite probable that many of the factors affecting mud in this field will not be found in most of the fields with which the reader is familiar. However, in the fields where the mud fluid causes no apparent problem it is probable that some of the points brought out in this paper could be used to economic advantage. In fields where caving and squeezing formations and high gas pressures are present, as in the Ventura Avenue field, it is believed that application of methods outlined will be of great assistance in drilling wells. On account of the sandy nature of the formation and the lack of suitable shale bodies in the strata drilled through in the Ventura Avenue field, the wells make practically no mud during drilling. It is necessary therefore to supply drilling mud to the wells that will carry the drill cuttings to the surface, and also will " wall up" the drill hole and prevent the sandy formations from caving. Mixing and Handling Mud Fluid The clay used to make the mud fluid is obtained from a shale stratum in the upper Pico (Plioccne) formation found about a mile on either side of the field. Since high gas pressures and caving formations were first encountered in the Ventura Avenue field and mud fluid was needed to combat them, the mixing of this mud fluid has gone through a process of evolution. First, the clay was mined and hauled to the derrick, where it was shoveled into the well and left for the churning action of the bit to mix into a mud in the hole. Mineral dressing is an industrial art concerned with the treatment and separation of solids suspended in fluids. Knowledge and evaluation of the area of solid-fluid interface is important in all cases except those involving only large pieces of solid. In fact, many problems relating to comminution, to flotation, to thickening and classification, could be dealt with more rationally if the interfacial area were known. A number of methods have been proposed for the measurement of the surface of certain finely divided solids. Among them are methods using rate of dissolution of the solid,? its magnetic remanence,³ the turbidity of its suspension," and the character of the size distribution of the material.9 The first two are limited to one mineralogical species per sample; the third has certain optical limitations, especially for mineral mixtures, and the fourth is based on an extrapolation of uncertain validity. The need of a better and more general method of surface determination has long been felt, therefore. The method of P. H. Emmett,4 based upon the low-temperature adsorption of vapors, appears to fulfill this need. This method consists in determining the amount of nitrogen that is adsorbed by a given sample of solid at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. The more surface there is on the solid—both internal and external—the more nitrogen is abstracted. In actual operation, the method is somewhat less simple than has been stated so far, in that the nitrogen is adsorbed in an incomplete layer, the completeness and thickness of the layer being related to the pressure of the nitrogen in contact with the sample.2 This circumstance makes it necessary to determine the nitrogen adsorption for three or more values of the nitrogen pressure. Apparatus In the Richards Mineral Dressing Laboratories an Emmett apparatus has been built and tested (Figs. I and 2). A mechanical vacuum pump B and a mercury diffusion pump A work in series to give a high vacuum. The sample, placed in bulb D, can be evacuated by this pump train by suitable operation of the stopcocks in the glass tubing that connects the various parts of the apparatus. C is a McLeod gauge, used to ascertain the order of magnitude of the vacuum obtained, and not for accurate pressure measurements. Pressure measurements are made in the mercury manometer F and gas-volume measurements in the gas burette E. Gases are stored in flasks L (nitrogen) and K (helium), arranged so that definite quantities of these gases can be introduced into
