An isothermal jacket microcalorimeter, supplemented by metallographic, microhardness, and X-ray measurements has been used to study the isothermal annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. The amount of stored energy released during annealing has been measured as a function of deformation in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct elongation. The data have shown the major heat effect to be associated with recrystallization and have allowed an analysis of the recrystal-lization kinetics and the calculation of activation energies of recrystallization. WHEN a metal is deformed plastically, some of the energy expended is dissipated as heat during the working process, while the remainder is stored within the metal in the form of lattice distortions and imperfections. During subsequent heating of the metal, the distortions and imperfections can be largely annealed out and the associated stored energy released as heat. It is apparent that measurements of the evolution of stored energy during such annealing may produce important information concerning the nature of the annealing mechanisms and the imperfections involved. Some excellent studies of this type have been made in the past, notably those of Taylor and Quinney,' Suzuki,2 Bever and Ticknor,3 Borelius, Berglund, and Sjöberg,4 and Clarebrough et al.5,6 None of this work, however, employed isothermal techniques, with the exception of the Borelius studies' in which only the early annealing stages were investigated. Since isothermal measurements, as compared with heating or cooling curve, have the merits that 1—they reveal the kinetics of a process more clearly, 2—the results obtained are more easily applied to theory, and 3—most fundamental investigations of annealing using techniques other than calorimetry have been carried out isothermally, it was considered important to apply calorimetry to the study of the isothermal annealing of metals. Accordingly, an isothermal jacket calorimeter of the Borelius type,' supplemented by metallographic, hardness, and X-ray measurements, has been used to study the annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. Experimental The microcalorimeter has been described fully elsewhere." Briefly, the specimen to be studied is placed in a constant temperature environment of virtually infinite heat capacity achieved, as shown in the drawing of Fig. 1, by means of a vapor thermostat. A high thermal resistance is provided between the sample and the environment and a sensitive differential thermopile (see Figs. 2 and 3) arranged with half its junctions in contact with, and thus at the constant temperature of, the environment, and the other half in contact with the sample. A reaction in the sample develops a small difference in temperature, AT, across the thermopile, which is followed by a recorder-galvanometer set-up as a function of time, t, and is converted to reaction heat per unit time, P, by the use of the equation AT P=a?T + b AT dt The constants, a and b, in Eq. 1 are determined by a simple calibration, making use of the Peltier heat developed by a small current run through the junction of a thermocouple located in an axial hole in the specimen (Fig. 2). In its present form, the limit of sensitivity of the calorimeter is a heat flow of 0.003 cal per hr. The copper used was the spectroscopically pure metal supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of 3/8 in. diam continuously cast rod, reported to be 99.999+ pct Cu. A small amount of the copper was available at the start of this work and is referred to hereafter as lot A. A second batch, lot B, was obtained later, most of the results described subsequently being for this lot. As will be seen, there is some indication that lot A was somewhat purer than lot B, but it is not known whether this difference was present in the as-received metal or arose during subsequent handling. The two lots of copper were remelted and cast into two 1½ in. diam ingots in vacuo, using high purity graphite crucibles and molds. The ingots were upset several times to break up the large cast grains, and then rolled and swaged to rods 0.391 in. in diameter, using several intermediate anneals with about 40 pct reduction in area between anneals. The penultimate anneal was 2 hr at 350°C. X-ray examination showed no marked general preferred orientation in the resulting rods. The grain structure typical of the two rods is shown in the micrograph of Fig. 4." It was found to be virtually im- possible to get an unambiguous measure of the absolute grain size in the two annealed rods because of the profusion of annealing twins and the lack of regularity of the grain boundaries. However, counts of the number of boundaries intersected per unit length along a random line on a polished section, making a correction for the proportion of boundaries (about half) estimated to be twin boundaries, gave a figure of about 0.015 mm for the average grain diameter. The grain size of the rod from lot A was about 5 pct smaller than that from lot B. The rods were cut into 1 ft long bars and these deformed in tension at room temperature to various total elongations in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct. A strain rate of 1 pct per min was used. The deformed bars were then stored in a dry ice chest until such time as samples were to be cut from them. Five bars deformed as indicated in Table I were used for the subsequent tests. The Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO+ CO = Zn + CO2 [1] C + CO2 = 2 CO [2] Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and CO2 , respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2 O [31 C + H2O = CO + Ha [4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between IIOO° and I3oo°C., . . . the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier's statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented. *

The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,' obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. As the magnesium concentration approaches that of Ag3Mg, slow cooling develops long-range order. Quenching sup-

B. M. Larsen (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—Could we have some sort of an estimate on the cost of calcium carbide for this treatment? Also, if you used calcium carbide on carbon-saturated iron, would some effect hold back the reaction? P. M. Hulme (authors' reply)—As far as I know we have not worked on carbon-saturated iron. About 3½ pct C is the highest we have worked on. As far as cost goes, it depends on how much sulphur You have to take out. It will run anywhere from $0.75 to $2.00 a ton overall cost including the cost of carbide per ton of metal treated. That is, using the efficiencies that we show in this paper. We are getting better efficiencies now. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—Did you say 2 lb of calcium compound? Mr. Hulme—That is based on 10 lb of calcium carbide per lb of sulphur removed. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—We have run this type of desulphurization process at the blast furnace. We have desulphurized between 100 and 200 at the blast furnace and taken the iron right out of the furnace with an injector system. The process gave us quite varied results; stratified iron, high sulphur on the top and low sulphur on the bottom, and we decided it was impractical. Mr. Hulme Just what was the type of injection equipment? Dr. Babcock—Nitrogen gas for one injection method and we used fairly large gun equipment. We followed the same general type of pattern you show only on a larger scale. Mr. Hulme—It sounds very much like what we call the gale of wind method. We have very erratic results with that. Dr. Babcock—We have tried several types, and particle sizes. The operation was not satisfactory. Mr. Hulme—Of course, we have never tried it on that scale except on a continuous basis. That is the reason we abandoned the idea of working on 35 ton ladles on a batch principle and took it as it came out of the cupola and treated it on the fly on a continuous basis. Dr. Babcock—When you compare the relative effectiveness of the process as carried out, it does not give a very favorable comparison of that process which is already developed. By now most readers of this column are aware that it no longer has a regular editor. Tom Murphy, who did the job so well, has had to bow out because of his duties in Australia---duties that keep him from the luxuries of such things as typists and typewriters for rather extended periods of time. We will miss his regular contributions but hope and expect to hear from him as a guest columnist from time to time. Finding an editor to function on a regular basis turns out to be no simple task. This does not mean that there may not be candidates around who would secretly enjoy having their arm twisted into a "yes" position, but at the moment none has been found. Anyway, at the Salt Lake City business meeting it was agreed that we should try to spread the load around. To that end, the Regional Vice Chairmen were specifically singled out as one potential source of contributions. These fellows should have an opportunity for a hearing during their term in office. The existing organizational set-up of the IndMD Division may be a little unfair to this group of officers. The limited responsibility outlined in our Manual of Official Duties and Responsibilities does not offer them much chance for self-expression. Probably the by-laws were written so as to have a geographic representation of membership in case it should be needed at some time. But that is another subject. The point is that now these regional officers have an opportunity to speak out on topics of their own choosing through this column. Some have already done just that. There are also other potential contributors to the column. One is the Secretary, who twice a year uses the column for distributing the minutes of our business meeting to the members. Another is the outgoing Division Chairman. In Salt Lake City, it was decided that this officer should be challenged to contribute something each year as a means of reviewing events of the past year or explaining what should have happened but didn't. I am, therefore, trying to accept that challenge.

Anthracite mining developments have not been as spectacular as the advances made for bituminous coal. The reasons are well known, i.e., steeply pitching seams of the western, eastern, middle and southern fields, and the physical conditions of the strata in which the seams are situated. Beds with moderate pitches (30º to 35º or less) have been mined with coal planers, longwall with movable props, shaker chutes, coal borers and large diameter boring machines. However, the use of this equipment has been limited to a relatively small portion of the production. Long-hole drilling has been developed from a point where holes of 25 or 30 ft have been replaced by those up to 130 ft. This has been possible through the introduction of primacord and similar detonating agents that can fire a long train of explosives with one cap. The usual practice in long-hole mining is to drive a gangway, chutes and monkey heading, or return airway, in the normal development manner. Two breasts can then be driven from the lower to the upper level to act as openings for the beginning of the long-hole work. Following completion of the development, holes can then be drilled from the monkey headings 100 ft or more up the pitch through the coal to within 15 ft or more of the upper level, depending on the nature of the coal on the roof. The thickness of the coal bed determines the spacing of the long holes, although they usually are on 6-ft centers for a 6-ft thick coal seam. The Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive investigations and tests on the development of a hydraulic mining system to be used in conjunction with hydraulic hoisting. Tests were conducted in cooperation with a large anthracite producer in a coal seam from 10 ft 6 in. to 15 ft in thickness and on a pitch from 0º to 20. This particular mining procedure is adaptable only to thick seams on relatively flat pitch as the maneuverability of the hydraulic jumbo is an important restricting factor.

During recent years, expanded perlite has found extensive use in a wide variety of commercial applications. Specifications for a range of uses call for aggregates having different physical properties and requiring various types of processing. The mitre scopic examination of expanded aggregates in specially prepared thin sections has yielded important information regarding internal structure and can be a useful aid in evaluation of the product. Perlite is an acid volcanic glass containing from 2 to 5 pct combined water. When crushed and rapidly raised to a temperature of 1500° to 2100°F, the volatilization of the combined water, coincident with softening of the siliceous glass, causes the particles to expand or pop. Expansion of perlite to densities as low as 1-1/2 lb per cu ft has been achieved, although the normal range is from about 2.5 to 10 lb per cu ft. Low-density materials of this nature have found application in cryogenic insula- tions, insulating tile and board, plaster and lightweight concrete, soil conditioners, filter aids after comminution, and a host of other uses. The expansion of perlite may be controlled by a number of variables. Some of these are ore milling, furnace design, expanding temperature, use of preheating techniques, screen size distribution, and feed rate of the crude. For the specific intended uses, the art of perlite expanding has developed to the point that much is known about the effect of these variables on the end product. The requirements, however, for an aggregate to be used in plaster are different from those for an expanded perlite to be used in lightweight concrete or for cryogenics. In the study of perlite, many practical questions remain unanswered. One of the most important is, "why do some perlites make hard aggregates while others cannot resist crushing or compaction?" The usual tests and methods for evaluation of nonmetallic substances have been tried and have contributed their share to our knowledge. But chemical analyses, compaction resistance tests, screen analysis, etc., will reveal only a limited amount of information. The answers to these complex questions may well be found in an examination of the intemal structure of the expanded particle. Such questions and the ex-

THE year 1923 was one of great importance in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, so far as the' development and expansion of previously discovered oil and gas fields were concerned. However, the search for new fields failed to produce a single discovery that led to important development during the period; in this respect, the year was one of discouragement to the prospector. During the winter and spring months, an especially active "wildcat" campaign was in. progress in southern Arkansas, and a large number of tests were drilled in northern. Louisiana but this activity subsided during the summer and fall. By the close of the year, only routine drilling was in effect in the fields; and only two new areas-Cotton Valley, in Webster Parish, and an area in Union Parish, La.-were showing any important activity because of favorable oil showings. Further drilling is contemplated in both of these areas, and the present feeling is that one or the other may produce the next oilfield in this territory. Briefly, the development of the Smackover field was the overshadowing event of the year. In. southern Arkansas, important development also took place in the East El Dorado, Stephens, and Irma fields; but all of these were relatively small. In northern Louisiana, many new oil wells were drilled in the Bellevue field, and many new gas wells in the Monroe field. In the old Caddo field, a large number of the deep Woodbine wells were plugged back to the "chalk rock," where a high gravity oil is obtained. In the other fields, only a few small wells were drilled. Therefore, Arkansas, furnished the real development of the year in this area. The production for the year showed a material increase over that of 1922, due, chiefly, to Smackover, and practically altogether to the Arkansas fields. In Louisiana, every field, except Caddo, Bellevue, and Elm Grove, showed slight to marked declines; while in Arkansas, El Dorado was the only field that declined throughout the year.

THOSE of you who, like myself, have had the privilege of hearing previous Howe Memorial Lectures will note, and I hope without too much disaffection, that for the first time in this series of lectures iron has been chosen as the subject. I feel sure that the predominant choice by previous lecturers of subjects relating to steel has been principally in deference to the well-known interest this subject held for Professor Howe, and that their choice has not reflected any lack of respect for the material, iron. Nevertheless, in the face of this record, I feel some diffidence in introducing this "Cinderella" of materials into the circle of distinguished subjects hitherto treated by Howe lecturers, which is relieved only by the fact that I hope to be able to present some evidence that this Cinderella has at last undergone some of those magical trans-formations which render her acceptable even in the society of her dis-tinguished sister, steel. Fortunately I can cite the old master himself in support of my choice of subject and recall to you that Professor Howe by no means overlooked or neglected cast iron in the long course of his metallurgical meditations. Indeed his attention was early arrested by a metallurgical aspect of cast iron which he believed and we still recognize as of the most funda-mental importance-namely, the genesis of graphite in gray iron and the means for the control of its quantity and distribution. He made some comments over 20 years ago regarding the nature of J. E. Johnson's oxygenated iron which indicate that even then his thoughts were taking directions which today we are finding it useful to explore in connection with the theory of high-strength iron. Had we had in the subsequent years the continuing benefit of Professor Howe's illuminating consider-ation of this important subject, our progress in the improvement of cast iron would undoubtedly have been even more rapid.

Introduction Chemical and mineralogical constitution play a very important role in the processing of ores because they dictate the method, either physical or chemical, for extracting the mineral or metal. Similarly, the mineralogical nature of the ore, especially the grain size of the valuable minerals, is very important in its processing. The fineness of the grain may be such that physical separation pro- cesses may be eliminated in preference to chemical techniques. In the past, very little attention has been devoted to the geo- logical and mineralogical occurrences which may be potential sources of ores by both the geologist and mineral processing engineer. On the one hand, geologists have devoted less attention to lower grade, complex mineral deposits, and, therefore, may have inadvertently curtailed an exploration 2rogra.m. On the other hand, the metal- lurgists have neglected to study in detail the geological environ- ments and mineralization of potential ores with the view of deter- mining the critical parameter that could assist in economically processing complex submarginal deposits. In the final analysis, a chemical processing technique converts the valuable metals to a mobile state under conditions similar to those which deposited originally in the host rock. The relationship between ore-genesis and chemical processing is close when the process of mineral or metal deposition in a particular ore deposit is understood--putting the metal in solution by reversing the process of deposition is re- latively easy. For this reason, some researchers and educators have been stressing the importance of ore-genesis, geochemistry, mineral equilibria, and ionic equilibria in studying and explaining the

Carbon in pig iron is not only essential but, ordinarily, it is the most abundant metalloid present; iron without carbon could not be pig iron. Carbon in pig iron has been accepted, but seldom specified. How it gets into the pig iron as it is being smelted in the blast furnace, and why just about so much of it enters into the pig iron in certain blast furnaces, and more of it,; or less of it, enters the pig iron in other blast furnaces, or in the same blast furnace under varying conditions, are problems that have not yet been satisfactorily solved. During my own practical blast-furnace experience, I collected analyses of pig iron, including the graphitic and combined carbon, and recorded them in reference to the percentage of silicon present, having in mind the generally accepted explanation that "silicon drove out the carbon." To this actual experience, I have added some analyses given to me by J. B. Rogers, who was superintendent of the blast furnaces of the Ashland Iron & Mining Co., Ashland, Ky., and was making "silvery iron" at the time. These analyses are shown in Table 1. The analyses do not tell the whole story, but they show that with Pocahontas beehive coke, the total carbon was generally high. The data relating to the composition of the slag are lacking but my own customary practice was to have a rather basic slag. During my experience in making pig iron for the Bessemer and open-hearth departments, there were times when the steel men would complain about some mysterious quality in the pig iron that caused bad steel, in spite of the fact that the percentages of silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and manganese were within the specifications. Many reasons were advanced for this undetermined "poison" in the pig iron, but the favorite one offered by the steel men was that the blast-furnace man had "oxidized" the pig iron at the tuyeres in his eagerness to get big production and low cost. To these complaints of the users of steel-making pig irons were added those of the gray iron-foundry men and the malleable iron men. These groups are unaninlous in their conclusions that the trouble lies with the blast-furnace men; but there is not yet any harmonious conclusion as to the exact cause and remedy.

The constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. He devised methods for taking cooling curves on alloys under high pressures and for the microscopic observation of alloys which contained liquid mercury as a structural constituent at ordinary temperatures. The compositions of the intermediate phases were confirmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston2 and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 2760 C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower temperatures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in the right region. Preparation of Alloys The silver used in the present investigation was supplied by the United States Metals Refining Co. through the courtesy of the Committee on Industrial Uses of Silver and, since a complete spectrographic and chemical analysis was furnished, no attempt was made to purify it or to further establish the impurities present. The analyses reported by the company are shown in Table 1. Milligan4 has found that the magnesium content is probably less than 0.0005 per cent.

THOSE interested in the early developments and experiments, both in the United States and abroad, that led to modern rock dusting, will find an excellent summary in a paper by George S. Rice,13 published in 1914. The period from 1914 to 1924 was one of intensive experiment on coal-dust explosions in the United States; abroad, war activities and rehabilitation stopped this work over a large part of that decade. Amer-ican findings were published by the Bureau of Mines, particularly in Bulletins 167 and 268. It is convenient to consider that in the United States rock dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines was initiated in 1924 with the publication of tentative specifications.17 This was followed in 1925 by an investigation of methods and costs12 and approval by the American Engineering Standards Committee of a Recommended American Prac-tice.18 Approximately 13 years have elapsed since this approval, and inasmuch as changes in rock-dusting practice in the United States have been evolutionary, it is necessary to consider this entire period as "recent" in some phases of the work. There have been no official changes in the Recommended American Practice since its approval. This paper reviews as briefly as possible knowledge acquired since the issue of the earlier papers mentioned, through experience in mines and experiments conducted by different organizations engaged in the pro-motion of mine safety.

The total amount of oil produced in the state of Oklahoma during the year 1928 was 242,286,400 bbl., as compared to 273,372,650 bbl. in 1927; 177,650,000 bbl. in 1926; and 167,900,000 bbl. in 1925. The year 1928 ranks second to 1927 in which more oil was produced in the state than in any previous year. The large in in 1927 and 1928 was due principally to the development of the Greater Seminole district. The decrease of approximately 31,000,000 bbl. in the 1928 production as compared with the production in 1927, was caused by a drop of nearly 8,500,000 bbl. in the Seminole district production and a more or less normal decline in the production of practically all the other older and more settled fields. During 1928 approximately 1800 producing wells were drilled in Oklahoma, which yielded during the year approximately 90,000,000 bbl. of oil. The average initial production of these wells was 850 bbl. per day, and the average daily production per well for the year was 137 bbl. The average daily production per well of the total number of wells producing in 1928 was 10.9 bbl., which is a 13.5 per cent. decrease from the 1927 average of 12.6 barrels. At the close of 1928 a total of 95,400 producing wells had been drilled in the state, and approximately 61,000 were still producing. The grand total amount of oil produced in the state from the time the first well was drilled up to and including 1928 was 2,553,000,000 bbl. The production in 1928 was 9.5 per cent. of the total oil produced in the state. Texas led all other states in 1928, with a production of 251,835,200 bbl. Oklahoma was second with 242,286,400 bbl., and California was third with 231,982,600 barrels. Fields outside Greater. Seminole District Practically all the old settled fields in Oklahoma experienced a normal and expected decline during the year 1928. The fields showing the most, pronounced decline as compared to 1927 were: Burbank, which dropped from 15,230,400 to 11,939, 150 bbl.; Tonkawa, from 7,692,000 to 4,952,900 bbl.; Garber, from 5,056,300 to 3,139,400 bbl., and Wewoka, from 6,188,-800 to 2,450,400 bbl. In many engineering structures, the mechanical properties of large volumes of rock must be considered. Typically, such properties are assumed to be the same as those of small laboratory samples, although it is clear that the laboratory samples do not contain the joints, faults, and other natural planes of weakness of the rock mass. A cheap, convenient testing procedure is needed with which the engineer can more accurately assess the strength and elastic properties of natural jointed rock. As a first step in this direction, a test has been developed capable of determining mechanical properties of large samples in their natural undisturbed state. In the present paper, some preliminary experiments on relatively unjointed material are described. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the deformation modulus of rock masses with varying degrees of success. Rocha (1), Grimm (2), and Alexander (3) have placed flat jacks in a slot in the rock and measured the pressure required to deform the slot. Bonnechere (4) has grouted large flat jacks in granite masses and performed similar experiments using a variety of strain measuring techniques. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has conducted radial jacking tests in which a uniform radial stress is applied to the inside of a tunnel of circular cross section and radial deformation is measured by extensometers located at various depths in the tunnel fall. Plate jack tests (Rocha (5), Shannon and Wilson (6)), pressure chamber tests, and cable jacking tests (Zienkiewicz and Stagg (7)) have all been used to determine in-situ deformation modulus. Several bore hole techniques have also been used to measure rock deformation. These include bore hole jacks (Goodman (8)), bore hole dilatometers using expandable membranes (Menard (9)) and bore hole penetrometers. Most of the above tests except the radial jacking test have an unknown stress distribution and require considerable approximation to calculate a deformation modulus. These approximations include the use of elastic theory for solutions of rigid plates, thick-walled cylinders, etc., and determination of values for Poissons

As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.
