THE observations presented in this paper were recorded during a study of the spheroidizing process. Spheroidization of cementite in steel is either brought about to develop a set of desirable mechanical properties or is an incidental result of mechanical and heat-treating manipulations. Physical properties of steel are materially influenced by the state of the cementite. Conversion of cementite from the lamellar to the spheroidal state is usually accom-panied by a decrease of hardness and of strength and by an increase in ductility. The spheroidized structure is usually considered as an ultimate step in the process of the softening of steel. The unorthodox hardening of a 3.5 per cent Ni steel (SAE No. 2330) after a heat-treatment that previously proved entirely suitable for a complete spheroidization of cementite in carbon steels led to the observa-tions that constitute the subject of the present paper.

Careful estimates indicate that during 1942 new discoveries and extensions in West Central Texas added oil reserves slightly in excess of the eight million barrels produced. Drilling activity fell 40 per cent below 1941 and 82 per cent below the normal drilling activity of the late 1920's. Total production for the district continued its downward trend, now being less than % of the 42.7 million barrels peak in 1921. Rapid revival of activity is not probable under existing conditions, as costs of discovery, development and operations on the average probably now exceed current market price for the oil, the latter having remained constant since the spring of I941. Costs have advanced materially since the third quarter of 1941, when reports to the Tariff Commission indicated a margin of profit of 13.3 per barrel. Physical as well as economic conditions are holding back the amount of drilling in this district. The lenticular sands are not suited to 40-acre spacing regulations. There is no surplus of experienced oil-field labor. To reduce costs, much second-hand material is used for all except the deeper wells.. Price controls have retarded movement of used equipment by prescribing maximum prices that arc too low for the better grade materizl, thus making , owners reluctant to sell. On the other hand, buyers are unwilling to pay ceiling prices asked by sellers for poor material. Seventeen new oil fields and five new gas fields were found during 1942. Extensions and deeper 'drilling brought favorable results in eight older fields. The most significant new developments appear to have been in Coleman, Jones, Shackelford and Taylor Counties. A 5800-ft. completion in Wise County brought this county into the producing column for the first time. None of these new discoveries can he rated above one million barrel reserve on the basis of present development. Probably the most important development was discovery of a deeper pay (Gunsight lime) in the Wimberly field of Jones County, which shows promise of producing over an area of about 1000 acres. Jones and Shackelford Counties still lead the district in total annual production. Discovery of the Reddin pool, north central Taylor County, is credited to geochemical methods, making one success out of five or more wildcats based on such methods. Geophysical surveying increased decidedly during 1942 and returns from these studies are expected during coming years. Most of the wildcatting in the district is still based on surface and subsurface geological structural mapping, study of log data as to distribution of prospective producing reservoirs, and drilling in proximity to previous showings of oil and gas. Geological debate continues as to the proper correlation of the 100 to 300 ft. of gray lime that has produced more than 100 million barrels in the Parks, Brecken-ridge, Curry, Eliasville, Ibex, Pioneer and other important fields of this district. Fossils indicate that this limestone is younger than the Atoka beds of Oklahoma. On a structural basis most geologists include this formation with the Bend but a number of paleontologists believe it is more properly classified with the Strawn.

The solid inclusion cell for absolute in situ stress measurement has been found to give reliable results in coal. The cell is described briefly, along with the methods of installing, overcoring and taking readings in underground coal mines. The validity of the cell performance is demonstrated by reference to the stress-relief curves obtained during overcoring and a three-dimensional B.I.E.M. analysis of the installation to test for stress anomalies deriving from the geometry of the overcoring groove-borehole-cell arrangement. Case studies of two stress measurement projects using the cell are presented for coal mines in New South Wales, Australia.

This paper describes and evaluates factors to be considered in applying computer based instruction (CBI) to the mining industry. CBI is especially suited to the monitoring of training functions and to the delivery of competency-based task training. Its effectiveness is dependent upon: (a) organizational factors (size, number of trainees and trainers, and current training budget), (b) appropriate hardware (accessibility, exclusivity, user-sophistication, transportability, graphics, and cost), and (c) appropriate software (flexibility, response evaluation, video interaction, graphics, and trainee management).

The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys near the eutectic composition has been studied at high growth rates. Lamellar structures were found over a substantial range of tin-rich compositions, and this range extended to increasingly tin-rich concentrations as growth rate increased. These results are discussed in terms of stability and competitive-growth arguments. Various experimental and structural limitations to the rate of directional solidification are discussed. The rate of heat removal at the heat sink is the major experimental limitation. ReCENT interet1,2 in the use of fine composite structures produced by directional solidification of eutectic alloys makes it important to determine the range of composition and growth conditions that yield such microstructures. Because increasing growth velocities produce increasingly finer microstructures, it is particularly significant to determine the factors limiting the rate of solidification. Mollard and Flemings3 have shown that composite structures, free of primary dendrites, can be obtained in Sn-Pb alloys of off-eutectic composition. The composition range of composite structures was found to increase with increasing values of G/V, where G is the temperature gradient and V is the growth velocity. These results are in good quantitative agreement with an analysis of the stability of a planar eutectic interface.4 This analysis specifically predicts that over a small range of compositions stable lamellar structures will be obtained even for G/V = 0, hence, even at very high growth rates. The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys has also been analyzed with a model based on competitive growth between dendrites and the composite structure.576 This treatment, based on earlier work on organic eutetics,7 predicts that the composition range yielding composite structures in Sn-Pb will increase rapidly at high growth rates. An increase in the composition range of composite structures at high growth rates was recently observed in Cu-Pb alloys near the monotectic composition.8 In view of these results, and the predictions of the stability and competitivegrowth analyses, it was decided to study the lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys at high growth rates. EXPERIMENTAL Using 99.999 pct pure materials, a series of Sn-Pb alloys were prepared containing 16.8 at. pct to 27.6 at. pct lead. (Eutectic composition is 26.1 at. pct Pb.) Ingots were extruded to 0.175 in. rod, and some rod was drawn to 0.070-in. wire. Directional solidification was accomplished in two different ways, Fig. 1. For growth rates up to 2 x 10-1 cm per sec, a 0.175 in. diam sample was placed in a graphite crucible 5 in. long with 0.250 in. OD and 0.035 in. walls. Samples were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, platinum-wound furnace, and solidified by driving the crucible downwards through a \ in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid, Fig. l(a). An insulated chromel-alumel thermocouple was imbedded in the center of a representative sample, and moved with the sample during solidification. The local temperature is plotted against the distance travelled by the sample in Fig. 2. As the growth rate increased, the solid-liquid interface moved closer to the water-cooled toroid and the temperature gradient increased. At growth rates above 10-1' cm per sec, heat was not removed fast enough and the sample moved into the toroid in the liquid state. The curve for V = 2 x 10-1 cm per sec shows a plateau caused by incomplete removal of latent heat from the interface, a problem which will be discussed later. To improve the heat removal, the toroid was cooled by nitrogen gas precooled in liquid nitrogen. This allowed successful solidification at rates up to 2 x 10-1cm per sec. Higher solidification rates required still more effective heat removal. Samples 0.070 in. in diam were placed in graphite tubes 0.125 in. in diam with 0.020 in. walls. Instead of cooling by sliding contact with a cooled toroid, these thinner samples were sprayed or directly immersed into water, Fig. l(b). After solidification, samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until they could be examined metallographic-ally. The surface was prepared with a diamond-knife microtome, followed by a light etch. The presence or absence of tin dendrites, Fig. 3, or lead dendrites, Fig. 4, was noted by optical microscopy, usually of a transverse section near the center of the sample. Replicas of the surface were prepared and examined in an electron microscope to resolve the fine lamellar structures, Fig. 5. The structures observed at various compositions and growth rates are summarized in Fig. 6. Composite structures were observed at increasingly cin-rich compositions as growth rate increased. This transition from dendritic to composite structure with increasing growth rate was also demonstrated by solidifying half a sample at a slow rate and then suddenly increasing the growth rate by lifting the furnace and quenching the sample with a water spray. A longitudinal section of this sample, Fig. 7, shows that the tin dendrites, which extended ahead of the slow-moving composite interface, were bypassed by the composite when the growth rate was increased. The range of composite structures at high growth rates was limited by the appearance of primary lead dendrites on the tin-rich side of the eutectic composition. Of late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloy1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10*". That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-for~chung'13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At suberitical temperatures above Ar" (temperature of martensite formation) where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Davenport and Bain' find that different sorts of atoms in solid solution in gamma iron affect the length of this " prereaction" period differently, manganese probably being the most effective in lengthening it. It is very difficult to believe that nothing occurs within these "prereaction" regions, for if this were so there is no reason why any reaction at all should be observed. AS in former years, Pechelbronn, in Alsace, was the most important producer in 1936, with 484,453 bbl., of which 283,151 from drilling and 201,302 from mining showed a slight increase in comparison with the preceding year. Gabian, in France and Tliouanet, in Algeria, are nearly exhausted. At Gabian, four wells drilled in intermittent exploitation produced during the year 2893 bbl. Four wildcats, one of which is producing, constituted all the activity in research on French territory. In Morocco, some wildcats have been drilled in search for new fields and exploratory drilling has been done in Tselfat and in Djebel Bou Draa in known fields, but the results have been inconsiderable. In Tunisia there was a gas outburst in Kebir 1, which is the first practical result obtained. In Madagascar, the Andrafiavelo region has been left and a new region has been tried in Folakara with the Tsimororo. In French Equatorial Africa, one drilling is in progress.

There were no important developments in the oil and gas industry in South Arkansas during 1935. Oil production, totaling 11,138,340 bbl., continued the decline that has been normal since 1925, but the decline from 1934 was only 278,600 bbl., or 2.5 per cent. The principal decline was in the Smackover field, while only the Champagnolle and Garland City fields showed notable increases. More wells were drilled than in any recent year, with a total of 123 completions. There were 44 oil wells, with a total reported initial daily production of 10,013 bbl., or an average of 227 bbl. per well. Two small gas wells were completed in Union County, where the gas is used locally for pumping and field operations. There were 77 dry holes, of which 28 were in or near oil fields and 49 were wildcats. Active drilling oper-at'ions declined from 65 at the beginning of 1935 to 41 at the end. Most of the drilling was done during the first part of the year, espr-chially (luring the flurry caused by the discovery late in 1934 of the "Taylor" sand production in the Champagnolle field, but the producing area was soon outlined. In November, 1935, the J. E. Crosbie, Inc., NO. 1 Sullivant in sec. 12, 17s. 14W., producing 560 bbl. per day at 3175 ft., opened a new sand lens in the eastern part of the field. The Camden "oil field," discovered in the last week of 1934, remained a one-well field, although four offset tests were drilled, besides a number of others in the immediate vicinity. Several interesting deep tests were drilled during the year, which added a great deal to the general knowledge of the subsurface formations and the structure of south Arkansas, but were not particularly encouraging as to prospects for the very deep production. First, the H. L. Hunt, No. 15 E. F. Gregory well in sec. 10, 17S., 14\W., in the Champagnolle field, was drilled to a depth of 6911 ft. It pene-trated red beds for 2982 ft., from 2943 to 5925 ft., mostly if riot entirely of Lower Cretaceous age. There was some anhydrite in the last 135 ft. of red beds. This was followed by 890 ft. of limestone, probahly Permian, and the rock salt was struck at 6815 ft. The salt is now generally conceded to be of Permian age. A number of the copper refineries in this country have lately separated some of the rarer metals from the slimes in the refinery tanks. One of these has furnished me the following table of recoveries from given amounts of blister. I publish this to show the proportions, to gold and silver and to each other, in which these rarer metals may be expected to occur in copper from certain localities. GarFIeld, Utah :—The blister copper comes principally from the Bingham porphyry copper mines. Steptoe, Nev. :—All the blister copper is produced from the Nevada Consolidated mines. (Also porphyry deposits.) Omaha, Neb. :—Blister copper comes principally from concentrated copper-lead mattes shipped from the different lead-silver plants of the Rocky Mountain region to the converters at the Omaha lead refinery. Mountain, Cal. :—Ores occur in connection with diorite (?).

This report covers most of the counties in North Central Texas in which oil is being produced in commercial quantities. The exceptions are McCulloch and Runnels, which were omitted because the production is small and the detailed information necessary for a report is not available to the writer. Complete information was not available regarding the number of wells drilled in this district during the year. The writer wishes to thank Mr. T. F. Petty, of the Humble Oil and Refining Co., Wichita Falls, Texas, for information used in compiling Table 2.

The deepening of the General Crude Oil Company's No. 1 Meyers, NE. NE. SE. of sec. 22, 24S., 36E., in the Cooper area of Lea County, in April, 1934, resulted in the discovery of an oil field of major importance. The discovery well is an old well drilled by Cranfill $ Reynolds and completed in July, 1929, in limestone at 3438 ft. for an initial production of 90,000,000 cu. ft. (estimated) of 'gas. Deepening operations were started early in April, 1934, and cores were taken from the old total depth of 3438 to 3508 ft. A Haliburton test taken through the drill stem at 3439 to 3460 ft. showed 50,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with an increase of 5,000,000 cu. ft. between 3461 and 3474 ft. When completed the well tested 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 5000 bbl. of oil at 3474-3508 feet. The new oil field—the result of this discovery—is between the Eunice and the Jal fields, closer to the productive area of Jal than to that of Eunice but far enough away from both to be considered a separate area. Eventually, all of these pools may be joined together by productive oil wells to form a single unit of large size. They lie in a general northwest-southeast alignment and the intervening areas have not been condemned by dry holes. Missouri has had one of the best years in history in the development of gas, the 49 completed gas wells having an average of nearly 1,000,000 cu. ft. initial open flow. Altogether 101 wells were drilled in the western part of the state, from Andrew County on the north to Vernon County on the south. Of these 49 were gas wells (including four old wells drilled deeper) with an initial open flow of 48,850,295 cu. ft., eight were oil wells (including one old well drilled deeper) with an initial capacity of 125 bbl. per day and 44 were dry holes (including five old wells drilled deeper). All the oil wells were in previously discovered pools in Jackson and Cass Counties. The outstanding discovery was a "shoestring" of a sand that is termed the Bartlesville, trending northwest and southeast across townships 48 and 49 N., R. 32 W., in central Jackson County. The sand is believed to be a narrow channel or bar, probably not over 800 ft. wide, lying at a higher horizon than the Bluejacket or true Bartlesville sand. A total of 32 wells with 47,453,080 cu. ft. initial open flow has been completed along the 6 miles of the shoestring. The largest individual well had an open flow of 4,500,000 cu. ft. The depth of these wells ranges from 350 to 635 ft., depending on surface elevation. The rock pressure ranges from 145 to 169 pounds. The Missouri Valley Gas and Oil Co. and Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co. have laid pipe lines into the area and most of the wells are now connected. In other parts of Jackson County and in other counties of the state there was very little activity during 1937. Of the 101 completions, 88 were in Jackson County. Cass County had five oil wells and three dry holes, Bates County one dry hole and Vernon County two dry holes. In the northern counties, Andrew and Clinton were represented by one dry hole each. At the end of 1937 drilling and leasing operations were very active and wildcatting promises to feature the coming year.

In 1944, in the Texas Panhandle, 245 oil wells were drilled with a total daily initial production of 32,886 bbl., representing an average initial production of 134 bbl, per well. This was an increase over 1943 of 121 wells drilled, and an increased initial production of 13,861 barrels. On Dec. 31, 1944, the field was operating on an allowable of 113,567 bbl. per day, but actually was producing 85,539 bbl. per day from the 5901 oil wells. The tota1 production for the year was 33,439,436 bbl., bringing the cumulative total to 5.04,537,048 barrels. Gas Sixty-three gas wells with a combined open flow of 992 million cu. ft., were drilled during 1944. This was an increase of seven wells over 1943, but a drop of 216 million cu. ft. in initial open flow. The
