HAVING been asked to talk about recent devel-opments in mining equipment, I chose the sub-ject of small units of storage-battery locomo-tives which recently have been developed with the idea of motorizing transportation in the mines as far as possible, replacing the manual labor of hand-tramming. Metal mines are probably less advanced in this field than coal mines, where transportation of large ton-nages on any one level is quite common. Of course, metal mines, where large tonnages are handled on any one level, are as advanced as coal mines, and storage-battery locomotives for main haulages are used quite commonly in such metal mines, but the mines having levels at many intervals in the depth of the orebody, or a number of intermediate levels in which a consider-able amount of hand-tramming has to be done, and small metal mines in which the size of the orebody does not seem to warrant the initial capital expenditure for the driving of main haulage levels and installation of rock and ore chutes and raises for the delivery of the broken ore and rock to the cars have been at consider-able disadvantage in replacing manual labor by some mechanical means of transportation. Several years ago the field was canvassed among the manufacturers of electric-locomotive equipment and the conclusion was reached that the art had not been devel-oped to the advantage of metal miners who desire to replace small units of labor by locomotive equipment. The need for such small locomotives is all the more em-phasized by the development in the past few years of mechanical mucking-machines (loading equipment for filling the cars from muck piles on the level). Any me-chanical loader is a liability instead of an asset unless means are also provided for keeping the material away from the loading-machines. Therefore the transporta-tion system must be equal to the capacity of a loading-machine, otherwise the latter is idle such a large per-centage of its time as to prove an unprofitable invest-ment. So there is a need for portable, small haulage units to handle small mine cars in many metal mines, and, naturally, units are desired which can be so readily shifted from level to level as to facilitate their free use. Of course, in mines in which each level comes to the shaft it is not such a difficult problem, but many mines have a great many intermediate levels which must be approached through raises, timber slides or other small openings required to transfer ore and to get timber and other supplies to those levels.

FOREWORD-At the SME-AIME meeting in Las Vegas this year, the SME Publications Board and the MINING ENGINEERING Committee decided that a fitting way of celebrating the United States' bicentennial would be to publish an article in ME covering the great men in American mining. After some discussion as to the inclusion of financiers -men such as William Randolph Hearst, J. Pierpont Morgan, etc.-the group agreed that the feature should be restricted to the "nuts-and-bolt people," e.g., mining engineers, geologists, mineral processing engineers. Thus, from the AIME All Institute Honors roll and from the SME Awards list, the group chose these 11 historical figures: Herbert Hoover, Daniel C. Jackling, Henry Krumb, James Douglas, Rossiter W. Raymond, Hal W. Hardinge, Seeley W. Mudd, Erskine Ramsay, Howard N. Eavenson, Robert A. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart. What follows is an account of each of these great miners' achievements and the problems they faced, and an assessment by some of today's mining leaders of the challenges that lie ahead.

TEMPERATURE measurement in wells is an old practice and geothermal gradients have been of interest to geologists for many years.1,2 Their application to the operation of oil wells is a more recent practice. It has long been recognized that temperature anomalies occur in drilling and producing wells but thermometers that could obtain a satisfactory record of the anomalies were not available.3 The normal geothermal gradient is con-sidered as being about one degree Fahren-heit for each 60 ft. of depth.4 This "nor-mal" gradient varies in different areas, but whatever it may be in an area there is little variation from the surface to as deep as the drill penetrates. The normal gradient is appreciably changed by gas expanding from the reservoir into the borehole or by the movement of fluid through a borehole while drilling, producing, or circulating. It is the resulting anomalies and abnormal gradients from which conditions in wells can be interpreted. Some of the applications of such interpretations are locating the position of oil or gas sands, permeable strata in a reservoir zone, gas-oil contact, source of water, casing leaks, and the top of cement behind casing.

THERE are three matters related to ore-hunting which I wish especially to discuss here: first, the paucity of the special writings applying to it; second, the failure of scientists to concern them-selves importantly with it; and, third, resting on these conditions, certain possible activities for economic geologists. First, as to the writings. Geological papers. are being produced in the United States alone at the rate of 10 to 12 shelf-feet per year.1 But papers specifically for the ore-hunter would go in a slim, annual pamphlet; all that have ever been written would go in a briefcase. The art of technical ore-hunting-geology conceived as a guide to ore-has only a scant literature.

Following a brief introduction, an outline is given of the four main conditions in which gases may be associated with metals; namely, (1) adsorbed gases, (2) dissolved gases, (3) gases in chemical combination, (4) gases entrapped in blowholes or cavities. Adsorption is essentially a surface phenomenon and is regarded as the attachment of outside molecules or atoms to the exposed free valencies of the atoms comprising the surface layers. In many cases where adsorbed films of gas are formed this is accompanied by a process of diffusion of the gas into the metal itself. This is particularly true in respect to iron and hydrogen, and experiments have shown that there is no difference between the rate at which hydrogen diffuses through a single crystal of iron arid through the same material after it has been recrystal-lized into a mass of small crystals. This does not prevent a somewhat greater concentration of gas at the boundaries of adjacent crystals, nor does it mean that the effect of the gas will be the same at the boundaries as it is within the body of the crystals. Indeed, under certain conditions, iron is rendered very brittle at the crystal boundaries, as shown in experiments by Pfeil with samples of almost pure iron. Much work has been done by many investigators concerning the temperature and conditions under which dissolved hydrogen, in particular, can be at least partially removed from different metals. With iron, the hydrogen that has diffused into the metal as a result of acid attack by pickling or by electrolytic deposition of the gas on the metal is partly removed by exposing the metal to the atmosphere at ordinary temperatures. Considerably more can be eliminated by raising the temperature, and even greater quantities by jointly raising the temperature and reducing the pressure. Annealing at suitable temperatures completely removes the bad effects of excessive mounts of hydrogen dissolved in or associated with iron. This is shown by the data plotted in Fig. 1, giving values for electrolytic iron sheets after annealing at temperatures between 250" and 950" C. The hydrogen brittleness is rapidly diminished at

Gob pressure measurements were made in a Western U. S. coal mine as part of a long-term program to evaluate cave progress and to determine the influence of geological discontinuities on caving conditions, load transfer, and resulting instabilities. Gloetzl cells were selected for the measurements due to their simple, robust construction and a history of being able to monitor pressures in a broken medium. A methodology was developed for the successful installation and protection of the cells and hydraulic lines in the gob as the face retreated. The measurements indicated a cave progress controlled by the frequency of major faults. The pressure-mining progress profile was compared to those observed in other parts of the world. It was concluded that the significant differences in profiles was caused by the thick-bedded strata, the existence of high lateral stresses, and the spacing between faults. Recommendations are given for future applications of Gloetzl cells for gob pressure measurements.

HIGH-IRON cements have a number of advantages over cements carrying little or no iron. The presence of iron in, Portland cement aids in the manufacture of the cement and also imparts certain advantageous physical properties to the finished product. In manufacture, the presence of iron lowers the fuel consumption, increases the ease of proper burning, and lessens the destructive action of the charge on the kiln refractories. In the finished cement the presence of iron reduces the expansion and contraction, adds strength, adds increased resistance to freezing and thawing, and increases the resistance of the cement to sea or sulphate waters. During the past few years the construction of numerous dams through-out the Southeast by the Tennessee Valley Authority has stimulated the production of high-iron cements. At present a great number of specifica-tions call for an iron cement, and the industry is supplying this demand with a Portland cement carrying approximately 5 per cent iron oxide. Several manufacturers are now making practically all of their cement of this type and a number of others manufacture it as a special cement over short periods to meet demands from the Tennessee Valley Authority and other buyers. The recent increase in the use of iron in Portland cement has created a market for iron products that previously was nonexistent. The chief sources of supply for the cement manufacturers at present are iron sand, iron sinter and slag, and ocher. The Copperhill mining district, Ten-nessee, supplies both iron sinter and slag for use in cement. The Carters-ville district supplies iron sand, ocher, and some iron resulting from the magnetic separation of iron from barite. The advantages of these products vary according to the chemical properties of the raw materials and the methods of handling used by the different manufacturers. Hydrometallurgical processing of ore deposits by solution mining or in situ techniques requires the interfacing of technologies as diverse as hydrology, geology, chemistry, and rubblization. This synthesis represents one of the main challenges to in situ processing due to the inherent complexity and vocabulary of these well-developed technologies, and to the general lack of appreciation for the depth of knowledge and endeavor in each separate field. No better example of the need for such interfacing of technologies exists than that of solution mining. How well these technologies interface depends upon the size of the operation and its financial capability to use the information and technology available. It is inconceivable that any one individual can optimize each potential contribution alone; consequently, some areas are usually neglected or simply are not fully appreciated. When one examines what must be done at a future date to develop and exploit a remote solution mining system, it becomes obvious that each discipline must effectively communicate the needed background information to make the project a synthesized whole.

General prosperity marked the industrial mineral industries of the U.S. and Canada in 1962. For most commodities, production and sales exceeded 1961 figures, and for several commodities, all-time production peaks were reached. Many millions of dollars were spent on exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits, construction of new plant facilities, and expansion and modernization of existing plants. This generally satisfactory state is attributable mostly to a continuing high rate of building and heavy construction. However, for large segments of the industrial mineral field, 1962 was a year of increasingly severe competition and of problems, either existing or potential, of overproduction and overcapacity. Such problems are of particular concern to the asbestos, cement, potash and sulfur industries. As in years past, the trend continued toward larger-scale operations to permit lower production costs per unit of material mined, toward more stringent quality controls and toward marketing methods that provide greater efficiency and customer convenience.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating certain problems relating to the blast furnace. In the course of these investigations it was desirable to measure, with the optical pyrometer, the temperatures occurring in the hearth of the furnace. Since no systematic measurements of these temperatures have been published a statement of the results may be of interest. The data given in this paper were obtained it thirty-two blast furnaces operated by seventeen companies; twenty of these furnaces were making iron, eight ferromanganese, and five spiegeleisen. The collection of this information was made possible by the cooperation of the American Manganese Co., Bethlehem Steel Corpn., Brier Hill Steel Co., Buffalo Union Furnace Co., Clinton Iron & Steel Co., Donner Steel Co., John B. In this paper the imminent relationship between rock burst and its phenomenon with normal rock pressure and its appearance, as well as the factors of one changing into another have been analyzed. Based on this, the necessary and sufficient appearing factors of rock bursts have been put forward, and the term ''burst pressure" has been defined. According to the statistics data of tremendous rock bursts which appear in collieries in Hunan Province, the features of high frequency, great strength and shallow depth of the beginning burst have been found. There are some special structures in the coal seams, which are closely related with the burst phenomenon. A hypothesis of "star structure" has been suggested for the appearing mechanism of bursts. Inside and around this star structure the distribution rule of burst pressure and rock strength has been researched depending upon the theory of the limited stress field. A new description of the appearing causes of bursts has been raised.

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equipment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Some form of wage incentives has been used traditionally in the mining industry to determine miners' pay. However, very little is actually known about the administration of such wage incentive plans in mining. As far as the authors know this is the first time a general examination of wage incentive systems as applied to underground mining has been undertaken.* This article reports the results of an investigation pertaining to the administration of wage incentive programs for miners who drill, blast, and load- mainly in underground metallic mining operations. This investigation was conducted to obtain management's views and attitudes towards wage incentives; therefore, the results do not necessarily represent accurately the thoughts of the miners themselves nor those of any organized union of miners.

Environmental legislation, both existing and proposed, requires that mills, tailings dams, evaporation ponds, and related processing facilities be located, constructed, and operated within stringent guidelines. An early step in planning a new processing facility is performing a site selection study in which topographic, hydrologic, geotechnical, and environmental parameters are evaluated for several alternate sites. Once a site is selected, then an environmental report, including a description of the proposed action, alternatives, baseline surveys, and discussions of potential environmental impacts, mitigation measures and monitoring programs is required. The federal legislation, siting studies, and environmental studies (along with the implications of these as they affect design) are discussed. In addition, costs for performing these studies and implementing control of effluents are discussed.

HEALTH and safety in the mining and allied industries of the United States have unquestionably been progressing, particularly during the past three or four years, even though the progress has been anything but great in some branches of these industries. Statistical data to support this statement are readily available as to safety, but similar health data are unfortunately not available. In coal mining the rate of occurrence of fatal accidents per million tons of coal produced for the ten-year period 1911.20 inclusive was 4.27; this rate was 3.84 in 1930, .3.31 in 1931, 3.36 in 1932, and 2.69 (tentative) in 1933. In metal mining, the-rate of occurrence of fatal and- non-fatal injuries per .thousand 300-day workers (calculated) was 224.36 for- the same ten-year period. This fell slowly until after 1929 when it was 203.14, dropping to 170.78 in 1930, to 142.09 in 1931, to 138.46 in 1932, and to 155.13 in 1933. Here, again,-the real progress began in 1931 though the rate in 1930 was not particularly bad.
