IN the early part of 1934, the St. Joseph Lead Co. purchased from the Kadco Corporation three dust-removal units, two suitable for raise work, and the other for drifting operations. The equipment was installed at the Balmat mine, in St. Lawrence County, New York. The Kadco dust-control system can be briefly described as one in which hoods, through which the drill steel is drawn, control the dust at the drill hole, the dust is conveyed through rubber hose or pipe to a collector, where it is removed from the air stream, and the air is then available for recircula-tion in the working place. As during the last few years a number of studies had been completed for the purpose of determining whether or not the dust was effectively removed by the Kadco system, and as the dust counts taken in these tests apparently indicate that it was, the St. Joseph Lead Co. was only inter-ested in obtaining data to show the efficiency of drilling, expressed in terms of minutes per foot drilled, when -using Kadco equipment, in comparison with the former method of drilling dry in a raise and drilling wet in a drift. Comparative dust counts were taken at Balmat, however, by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. to show the difference in the dust content of the air in which the operators worked when drilling dry, wet, or with the Kadco equipment.

THE petroleum industry in Indiana made no extraordinary progress during the year 1924. The surplus stock of crude, brought about by the production of 732,407,000 bbl. in the United States in 1923, as against a production of 557,531,000 bbl. in 1922, had its effect on prices though there were slight advances. These advances were more than offset by the continued high prices of labor and materials. TRENTON OIL DEVELOPMENT The principal development of the year occurred in the Hotmire pool of the Ridgeville district in northeastern Indiana. This pool lies partly in the southern part of Jay County and partly in the northern part of Randolph County. The oil is obtained from the upper horizon of the Trenton. During the past year, about 30 wells were drilled, 21 of which were productive. An attempt to extend the Hotmire pool to the northeast resulted in the discovery of a gas-producing area near the center of Pike township in Jay County; 10 wells have been drilled 4 of which produced oil. The Harvey Orr No. 1 produced 900,000 cu. ft. of gas per day.

The term "secondary aluminum" frequently is used loosely and often is considered synonomous with "inferior quality." Under war conditions, when every pound of material must contribute its share to the job at hand, this type of thinking is most unfortunate. Actually, given a supply of segregated scrap, an experienced smelter can produce remelted ingot of good quality, comparing closely to the analysis of the original material, and of considerable value of the war effort. The alloys he can produce are, of course, somewhat controlled by the analysis of the available scrap and, by the very nature of things, some of his production is not suitable for indiscriminate use. However, remelted scrap ingot provided about 273,2 per cent of this country's domestically-produced 1942 aluminum supply and probably will comprise about 39 per cent of the 1943 supply. (Canadian production is excluded from these figures.) That this part of the supply remains important is indicated by a recent report that "requirements" for the second quarter of this year were about 14 per cent greater than the supply, even though that supply will be almost twice the prewar annual production. (And those requirements, incidentally, were prepared after many conservation measures had been taken into account.) Since W. Bonsack recently has published a paper2 on the effects of the various alloying elements and impurities on the properties of aluminum, and such con¬siderations really are the important ones in a discussion of the metallurgy of secondary aluminum, it is planned to restrict this discussion more to a consideration of the sources, general characteristics and possible uses of these materials. For the purpose of this discussion, mill (or run-around) scrap may be disregarded and only plant scrap and obsolete scrap considered. Plant scrap, of course, is that scrap which is generated during the production of some part or assembly from a fabricated form of aluminum, such as sheet, tubing, forgings, castings or the like, and it may consist of solids (including rejected parts or subassemblies) or of machinings. To the extent that the several alloys are effectively segregated and the material is properly identified, the composition after remelting can be rather closely controlled or predicted. Obsolete scrap, on the other hand, is the "junk" which accumulates because of the wearing out or breakage of some piece of equipment. Although it is almost always in the form of solids, the accumulation includes many different alloys (often in the same assembly) and may include a considerable amount of nonaluminum material. The "metallics" recovered from drosses also contribute a portion of this class of material. The composition after remelting, therefore, may vary over rather wide limits and can not be very accurately predicted in any specific instance. General Aurelio Blanquet,* the best known of living Mexican soldiers, formerly the trusted friend of Porfirio Diaz and organizer of the old Federal Guard of Mexico City, who as a sergeant commanded the squad that executed sentence on Emperor Maximilian, and. more recently was Minister of War in the Cabinet of Victoriano Huerta, landed in Mexico early in April and joined the forces of Felix Diaz. His landing in the state of Vera Cruz, it was stated, was for the definite purpose of aiding the movement now under way to overthrow Venustiano Carranza and to place in power a government that will be "pro-Ally" in its sympathies and will promulgate and enforce laws that will guarantee the rights of life and property in Mexico. The New York Tinges says of the revolution editorially: "Whatever may be the success of General Aurelio Blanquet's attempt to overthrow the Carranza Government in Mexico, admiration cannot be withheld from the General's publicity manager. No enterprise awning at the overthrow of a Government ever had more favorable and widespread advertising. Felix Diaz, whom Blanquet is going to reinforce, supersede, or overthrow, as the case may be-Mexican precedent in these matters offers opportunity for considerable speculation-has been conducting his revolution, at the old stand for some time, but without much success. But, says General Blanquet's representative, the landing of Blanquet will send a thrill to the heart of every true republican.' Meanwhile a biographical booklet is published, adorned with photo¬graphs illustrating the General's record, including such varied matters as the General in favor, receiving a decoration from Victoriano Huerta, and the General in exile, feeding the birds in Central Park."

IN the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of the addition of zinc, there remains in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 pct zinc. At this stage in the refining operations virtually all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess copper, nickel and cobalt have been removed by the zinc additions. The silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz per ton. It then remains only to remove the zinc and antimony in order to produce refined lead. At the Herculaneum plant of the St. Joseph Lead Co., practice formerly was to complete the refining by means of oxidation in a reverberatory furnace. This process consisted of heating the lead to 14000 to 1500°F and allowing it to come in contact with excess air passing over the surface of the lead and periodically agitating the bath of lead with air. This procedure not only resulted in the loss of zinc but of a considerable quantity of lead converted to the oxide in the form of dross and fume. The fume, collected in the baghouse, together with the dross was returned to the blast furnace, thus adding appreciably to the circulating load on the blast furnace and refinery. In addition, operation and maintenance of the reverberatory furnace was expensive and required the performance of disagreeably hot and somewhat hazardous work. The process of dezincing with high vacuum was developed at this plant as a substitute for the oxidation process and finally led to lower operating costs, the practical elimination of dross and fume and the direct production of metallic zinc, which is very suitable for re-use in the desilverization process. Essentially this process consists of subjecting the lead to high vacuum, in a kettle provided with means for heating, a bell-shaped member open at the lower end so constructed that it can be immersed in the molten lead, and means for evacuating the interior of the bell and for sealing an agitator. Metallic zinc is thus produced and collects on the upper cooled part of the bell member. This metallic zinc is periodically removed and re-used in the desilverization process. The process is quite simple. It is conducted at a low temperature, thus permitting the use of iron equipment, and shows a material saving in refining costs over the old method. EQUIPMENT AND ITS USES Dezincing Machine.-The equipment employed in this process consists of a dezincing machine, a steel kettle of 120 tons capacity, a vacuum system and equipment for handling the dezincing machine (Fig I). The dezincing machine consists of a compact assembly, suitable for handling with an overhead crane, consisting of a treating chamber and the agitating mechanism. THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl. Oil was discovered at Rangeley in 1901, and the field supports a small local refinery at the present time. THE waters of many oil fields have been regarded as buried sea water which has been retained in the sediments since the time of their deposition. The preservation of connate water through geological time has seemed improbable to only a few geologists, but there is room for doubt that buried sea water could remain in the strata during their periods of deformation and during the many subsequent epochs of. the circulation of meteoric ground-water. Some have even suggested that the calcium chloride water in the deep mines of the Lake Superior region is ancient sea water buried in the Algonkian lavas, but it is hard to understand how such water could be derived from the highly sodic and sulphatic water of the sea. It would seem more plausible to connect the calcium chloride with the highly calcic magmas of the greenstones in which it is found. Chemical analyses of waters associated with oil differ widely from the composition of sea water, requiring extensive alteration of the latter, if the former is truly its derivative. The first notable difference is the general absence of sulphates from oil-field waters, but this has been explained satisfactorily through reduction by hydrocarbons and organic matter. Oil reduces sulphates with the production of hydrogen sulphide (or sulphur), water, and carbonates (or carbon dioxide). The second striking difference is in the high ratio of chlorine to sodium. An examination of the analyses of chloride waters from oil fields shows that they contain a large relative excess of chlorine over that in sea water. Moreover, there is difficulty in finding chemical reactions that are probable in nature, by which sea water could be converted into anything like the chloride waters of oil fields. In the latter a large part of the chlorine occurs as calcium acid magnesium chloride. This condition might be produced by the removal of sodium carbonate, which; however, cannot be precipitated in the presence of much calcium or, magnesium.

EXTENSIVE Sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 years by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The sulfur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jack-son County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area Underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent, sulfur.

12.2-1. Introduction. Successful management constantly strives to improve its methods and equipment in order to produce a better product at reduced cost. It is not enough that managers be cost conscious and industrious in these days of rapid, dramatic technological development. They must keep abreast of these developments-new or improved methods, machines, and equipment. Most of the machines and equipment have been carefully designed and perfected by reliable companies. However, improvements and progress often evolve from a definite need and are most successful in a particular operation. What may be the "answer" to the requirements of one company may be totally useless or inefficient to those of another. The manager of today must continuously evaluate the myriad proposals for change that result from modern technology-in terms of the particular needs and objectives of his company-to determine correctly which will best satisfy those needs and reach those objectives. Each new method or piece of equipment must receive careful study to make certain it is compatible with the entire operation. It may solve a problem in one department only to create a new problem in another. There are many pitfalls to be avoided in obtaining the necessary facts, and often these problems are unrelated to the actual use of the equipment or method being studied. All facets of the operation being considered must be thoroughly studied to determine if the method is compatible to the entire operation. For example, in considering a possible recommendation that a certain method and type of equipment be used to transport ore, some of the factors that should receive close scrutiny are: blasting procedure, maintenance, turning radius, percent grades, weather extremes, dumping problems, tire problems, length of haul, operator acceptance, or mismatched equipment. Failure to consider every factor-large and small, present and future-in evaluating a proposed change can mean a large investment in a new method or machine that will have to be continued for years at higher-than-antici-

Hostility is a characteristic of the environment in underground mines. Nature opposes man's efforts to remove mineral deposits, and this condition is recognized when mining is described as winning minerals from the earth. Evidence of this conflict is the action of natural forces to close excavated passageways. In many mines, this behavior of the surrounding environment is an ever-present and ever-changing problem despite much research and empirical study. Geological conditions change abruptly and may result in rock bursts, the inrush of water, or variations in rock hardness. Although aspects of these problems will become intensified as the rate of mining increases, they are not considered in this discussion. Emphasis herein will be on the changes in the atmospheric environment. Men underground work in an ever-changing, alien, ambient atmosphere. Many conditions are encountered that will affect their health and safety unless properly controlled. Potentially explosive gases are released from minerals as they are mined or enter from the surrounding earth. Some mining methods generate noxious gases. Natural processes and diesel equipment can steal life-sustaining oxygen. Airborne dust may cause lung diseases when breathed by miners in excessive amounts and by affecting visibility, introduce safety hazards. Deep mines pose heat problems that may be aggravated by high-speed mining. The deleterious effects caused by these changes, and their mitigation, are subjects of this discussion. THE UNDERGROUND ATMOSPHERE Health and safety problems from changes in the underground atmosphere have been apparent since the beginning of mining. Alleviation of these problems has been by ventilation with normal air from the earth's surface that flushes away the vitiated mine atmosphere. The objective is to provide atmospheric conditions essentially similar to those that man is accustomed to on the surface.

DEVELOPMENT of uranium extraction techniques over the past ten years has been spectacular. Rapid progress has been made by applying chemical, physical, and engineering fundamentals for the purpose of devising simpler processes, developing continuous procedures, reducing reagent consumption, improving final products, simplifying analytical methods, and treating more refractory ores and ores of lower grade. Since the source of many valuable metals in future will be of necessity from lower grade ores of a complex nature, and since hydrometallurgical processes are often the only means of treating such materials, these recently developed techniques will be of increasing importance. Leaching: A great deal has been published about the important role of ion exchange resins in purifying and concentrating leach solutions. Recent applications indicate that the resins will be very useful in simplifying leaching procedures of ores containing two or more valuable metals.1 The valuable metals may be differentially adsorbed by careful control of the oxidation-reduction potential of the pregnant liquors. For example, treatment of vanadium- uranium ores at present may involve salt roasting, water leaching, acid leaching, carbonate leaching, and intermediate fusions. Use of a single acid leach may now be possible, followed by a two-stage ion exchange technique, comprising initial adsorption of hexavalent uranium and rejection of tetravalent vanadium. The solution is then oxidized, producing pentavalent vanadium, which is later readily adsorbed and stripped into a separate eluate.

ON Aug. 25, 1911, a rail failed on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, causing a disastrous wreck. The surface of the fracture was in a plane at right angles to the length of the rail. There was a dark-colored, oval spot on this surface, located on the gage side of the head, representing the part of the rail which was the first to fracture. The nucleus of this spot showed that the fracture had an interior origin. Other fractures of this kind, the peripheries of which had not reached the surface of-the rail, presented surfaces having a silvery luster. The darkened surface of the present fracture was caused, doubtless, by the air having had access to it. This fracture was recognized as a fatigue fracture, of a modified type, its interior origin having been due to a component in the rail which is not usually present in cases of fatigue fractures. The metal next the running surface of the head of the rail was in a state of internal compression, this being the component not commonly met with in other cases, and which caused the fracture to have its interior origin. For the purpose of giving this modified type of fatigue fracture a specific name, for identification, the term "transverse fissure" was applied. No mystery was thought to attach to its formation, or to its development. The explanation of its occurrence was obvious in the light of common knowledge upon the behavior of steel under repeated alternate stresses. By reason of the state of internal compression at the running surface, the maximum tensile stresses in the head, under bending loads, were along an interior element. Here the tensile strains were higher than in the fibers more remote from .the neutral axis. Under such conditions the fracture of the rail would be expected to have an' interior origin. A discussion of the subject of transverse fissures essentially becomes a discussion of fatigue fractures, since they are identical. The descriptive term employed, merely for the identification of this type of fatigue fracture, had the appearance of creating alarm. AMONG the petroleum-producing countries of the world, Roumania occupies the fifth place; in Europe, it occupies second place, coming after Russia. The extraction and the use of petroleum in Roumania, may be trace( as far back as 1856, but the production on an industrial scale started in 1896, when the "Steaua Romana," was formed. From that time until the beginning of the war, the petroleum industry had a rapid growth the number of the producing companies increased to 37, and production FIG. 1.-ROUMANIAN OIL AND GAS FIELDS. increased from 81,571 tons, in 1896, to 1,898,545 tons, in 1912, when the greatest production was reached. In 1916, when the Germans invaded Roumania, the oilfields, at the order of the Allies and under British supervision, were destroyed, to pre vent their exploitation by the Central Powers; the wells were blown in the refineries and the storage tanks burnt, and pipelines put out of order This voluntary destruction, which weakened the resistance of the Central Powers, set back the petroleum industry at least one decade. Reconstruction after the war was slow, because of bad transportation conditions the scarcity of drilling and refining material, the insufficiency of. electric power, and the continuous depreciation of the Roumanian money, which made difficult the buying of the necessary materials for reconstruction.

THE problem, of the crippled soldier in industry is not a problem of war work only; it is a problem of industrial development. As individuals, each one of you is seeking to provide our maimed heroes with such teaching as will render them, in the shortest possible amount of time, productive and satisfied members of the community. As individuals you are interested in the organizations that are preparing to receive these men, to train them and to place them at that work for which they are best fitted. As an organization, it is now your duty to take up the industrial end of the problem, to investigate existing conditions in the industries, to discover where the opportunities for employment lie, and so readjust industrial practice that the cripples may be utilized to their own and the community's good with the least shock to themselves or to the industries, and with the greatest amount of permanent benefit to all concerned. We have divided industrial opportunities suitable for cripples roughly, into three classes. First, such as already exist in the industries, which can be set aside for cripples only, present occupants being transferred to other work for which they can be fitted but which is not suitable for cripple work; second, opportunities in the industrial world that, through changes in the working equipment or tools, or through appliances attached to the cripple himself, can make the cripple a competitor of the sound worker; third, opportunities not existing at present in the industries, but which could be introduced for the good of the community, without placing the cripples into competition with any existing class of workers.

The year of 1924, in Venezuela, has been one of especial interest. The figures for production marketed are not so impressive, but to the well-informed followers of the development, the ease with which this production has been obtained and with which it apparently can be increased at will merits most careful consideration. For several years, the oil world, especially in the financial centers, has been closely following the slow unfolding. of the' Venezuelan developments, which has been, and still is, one of the great pioneering achievements in the history of oil exploitation. Venezuela, from the first days of its recognition by geologists and financiers as a great future source of oil, has been a field for the enterprising vision of the larger capital groups. The laws of the country have been drafted with almost an inspired foresightedness that has favored the exploitation of the resources along constructive lines, which' has eliminated the irrational promotion schemes that accompany many of the oil developments in the United States. Developments have been exclusively in the hands of strong financial groups, who have followed a conservative policy with respect to the dissemination of detailed information concerning the geological findings and detailed production data. Within the last year, however, the rapid expansion of the production phase of the developments has been on such an important scale and has involved such a large and rapidly increasing personnel, that further restraint with respect to information of a general informative' nature can serve no useful purpose. Certainly, from the volume of references to Venezuelan oil affairs, which are now of almost weekly occurrence in the oil trade journals, the public must appreciate the fact that in Venezuela, and in the Maracaibo district in particular, a new oil region of the first magnitude is about to emerge from comparative obscurity and occupy a commanding position on the stage of world oil affairs.

The occurrence of the manganiferous variety of wolframite at a new locality in Arizona was announced in the month of May last." It occurs in the granite hills of the Dragoon mountains, in Cochise county, about 6 miles north of Dragoon Summit station, on the Southern Pacific Railway of Arizona. It is found in veins of white quartz, traversing a coarsely crystalline granitic gneiss, and, so far as yet determined, is without association with other metallic minerals in the same veins, except small quantities of scheelite. It is a very pure form of the mineral, and contains but little iron, the base being manganese oxide. The color is brownish-red; it is nearly the same as the color of the mineral originally described by E. Riotte from Mammoth District, Nevada.† Thin films or plates on the broad cleavage-surfaces, and thin cleavage-flakes, seen by transmitted light, are ruby-red, or rather more like the color of red zinc oxide or the mineral known as clintonite.
